Snow Sports Society

Sports clubs, about snow sports society.

Established in 2009, we are one of Bath Spa's largest societies - catering for the people who love the snow. We welcome people of all abilities, from beginners to pros and everything in between. Our society is as diverse as it comes, with even members of the committee being spectacularly terrible at skiing (as discovered during our 2019 trip to Avoriaz). Each year, our society runs an annual Ski trip before Christmas to the exotic mountains of Europe. Although our trip is obviously a big factor to us as keen snow-fanatics, it’s not essential to those of you who are ski/boarding virgins. Most of our members have previously joined because they’re simply enticed, or have heard great things about our legendary SNOCIALS. However, if you are up for exploring the Alps with us, our mixed ability group ensures that there will always be someone on the same level as you, willing to give a helping hand. We welcome anyone and everyone, regardless of your snow history – join for the socials, join for the trip or even join to learn! We offer something for everyone. If you're keen on bettering your racing or freestyle abilities, then come join us on one of our fortnightly training sessions! Along with our good friends Bath Snow Sports, UWE and Oxford Brookes, you can take advantage of the excellent but affordable facilities at Gloucester Dry Ski Slope. If you're feeling confident enough, you will also have the opportunity to represent Bath Spa Uni in the Kings dry ski slope competition which runs annually throughout the year. Ultimately we’re just up for having a good time wherever we go, be it on the trip or at home in Bath. A favourite among Bath Spa students, we’ve received some of the best feedback - not only from the trip but also how we run as a society. Having a fairly large number of members means you’ll meet and get to know new people who, chances are, you’ve never seen before. We hope you can join us and get a real taste of Spa snow. Make sure to follow us on Instagram for regular updates, Snow Love xxx

Varsity Ski Trip Moved to Easter 2021

Varsity Trip announced today that the annual Ski Trip, which sees over 3000 students from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge travel to France each year for a week, has been moved to the 19th – 27th March 2021 , for the safety of participants, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a post made to their Facebook Page , they said: “Our top priority is the safety of all of our trip attendees and so we have taken the decision to move Varsity to March 2021. A Spring Trip has been considered for a few years now, with global warming impacting our current dates, and we feel that this is a great opportunity to steer the trip in a new direction.”

The Trip is a major event on the calendar of many students, with opportunities available not just to ski or snowboard on the mountain, but also a number of nightlife occasions including an Opening Night and Final Night Party. Previous headliners have included the likes of Rudimental, Example and Sigala.

On Facebook, they said that “March will also offer guaranteed snow and much better weather for skiing (and apres!!), and [they] are very excited to host another unforgettable Varsity!”

While the trip has traditionally centred on the Varsity Ski Races between Oxford and Cambridge, social events make up a key component, and current social distancing measures would make the normal running of these impossible. The decision to postpone to Easter, in what would be Oxford’s 10th week and Cambridge’s 9th week, was therefore made in the hopes of having as close to a normal trip as possible. Accommodation and travel companies at this time in the year typically expect booking confirmation, so uncertainty caused by the virus likely meant these could not be confirmed.

Josh Boddington, President of Oxford University Ski and Snowboard Club, said that the decision to move the trip was “the best choice considering the situation”.

“The [Varsity Trip] committee this year had a tough decision to make and had to consider the safety of all trip goers. If they were to press on with the normal December date, there is a high probability the trip might have been cancelled anyway, or at least not be as good as it could be due to distancing measures limiting the available après activities. Having spoken to the committee before the announcement was public, I’m confident Varsity Trip 2021 will be as good, if not better, than any other year.”

“The extra time from now until the trip will give us extra space to prepare for the races against Cambridge, and more positively it gives freshers more chance to get involved and train with our teams.”

While the last two years have taken place in Val Thorens, the final resort announcement is expected to be made next week on the Trip’s social media pages.

Any questions can be answered on their FAQ page

University of Edinburgh Blogarithms

Current mathematics students share their experiences of university life at Edinburgh.

University Ski Trip…

… by arran / from glasgow / bsc mathematics / 3rd year (ug).

Obviously we can’t travel at the moment due to Covid-19, which has made me think back on some of my recent trips. Under normal circumstances, Edinburgh University has lots of opportunities to get involved with things outside of just studying your course. I am going to tell you about one of many fantastic opportunities that you can get involved with.

The university ski trip is an experience like no other. In both first and second year, I have gone to the French alps, along with over 1200 students, to spend a week skiing, partying, and having the time of my life. After quite a long bus ride (around 30 hours) we arrived in Tignes late in the evening, grabbed our skis from the rental shop, before dinner and an early night so we were fresh for the slopes in the morning… or we might have gone into town to check out the local bars and clubs.

Regardless of what happened the night before, we woke up around 8, filled with excitement to get out to ski on the fresh snow. I made porridge for everyone and we packed a lunch for the big day ahead. We booted up, slung our skis over our shoulder and picked a ski lift to head up to start the day.

Although you are surrounded by a desert of snow, the sun beats down on your face and the skies are as blue as the ocean. Surrounded by the immersive scenery, we would enjoy racing down the slopes, discovering new runs, and taking the occasional fall. After December exams, and Christmas festivities, this was the perfect bliss. There are multiple restaurants with outdoor seating areas where we would stop for our lunch and maybe a refreshing pint.

Normally we would ski right through until around 4 or 5 when the lifts would close; however, as the week went on there was normally a later start or a bigger lunch break, after all, skiing is very tiring! But the day wouldn’t end there. In the Alps they have massive outdoor parties called “Apres Ski” with world class DJs and amazing live performers. The best part about these parties is some of them are halfway up the mountain, so you ski to get there, and then after a few hours of partying you ski to get back home, which was always a good laugh.

Dinner usually consisted of a big pot of pasta while we all shared our stories of the day, and got ready for the night ahead. The bars and clubs in the Alps are something else. As the night went on more and more people would be up on the chairs and tables dancing, singing, and having the time of their lives. The vast majority of the people in these clubs were from Edinburgh as the group size is so massive, so it was brilliant constantly bumping into people you know and hearing about how their day on the slopes was. Once it was home time we usually got a pizza on the way home and set our alarms so we were ready to do it all again the next day.

There is a wide range of ability on the ski trip, some people go who have never skied before, and others have skied for team GB. This is a trip I would recommend to everyone and I believe I will remember it as one of the best experiences of my university years.

Campus Recreation To Host Skiing Trip At Wintergreen Resort

bath university ski trip 2021

As the start of spring semester is underway at Liberty University, Campus Recreation is preparing for an upcoming ski trip to Wintergreen Resort, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

According to Outdoor Adventures Manager Katy Ward, Campus Recreation hosts at least four trips to Wintergreen per year, offering an affordable skiing option for students.

Day trips to the resort cost students between $35 to $50, including transportation, lunch and snacks. Students can rent skis or snowboards from Snowflex for an additional $5.

“Once we get there everyone unloads their stuff, we hand them their ski pass, and we just kind of let them go,” Ward said. “It’s kind of a free-for-all. They just get to hit the slopes and do whatever they want.”

In previous years Campus Recreation welcomed up to 40 students per ski trip, but due to COVID-19 restrictions only 16 students are currently allowed per trip.

“These trips fill up really, really fast,” Ward said. “Usually within 24 hours of us posting the link, it’s full. Sometimes we get repeats, but a lot of the time we get new faces that we’ve never seen.”

All of the spring semester trips are currently full, but students interested in attending one of these events are encouraged to sign up for the waitlist on Liberty University’s Outdoor Adventures website.

Students who have attended these ski trips in the past speak highly of the experience, adding that they would love to go back if the opportunity presented itself.

“I had an amazing time,” Jordan Dennett, a senior biomedical science major said. “I happened to go on some perfect winter days with newly laid snow. The affordability of the trips through LU and the snacks and lunches offered made it a great experience.”

Gabe Carrion, a senior from Honduras, said he has taken three trips with Liberty University’s Outdoor Adventure program and would undoubtedly go again if the opportunity presented itself.

“I went with Liberty’s Campus Recreation program each time and could not have had a better, more positive experience,” Carrion said. “They make it super affordable, fun, easy, and even provide snacks.”

In addition to the Wintergreen ski trips, Campus Recreation also offers a wide variety of Outdoor Adventure trips such as Liberty Mountain bike rides, winter caving, horseback riding, and  kayaking.

“In this time of COVID, a good trip outside — especially skiing in the mountains — you can’t get better than that,” Ward said. “Just getting outside and trying to refresh a little bit before you’re bogged down with classes and the stress of life can be a huge help.”

How to publish in this journal

[email protected]

The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.

Ratio of a journal's items, grouped in three years windows, that have been cited at least once vs. those not cited during the following year.
