A History of Terror

This award-winning city centre tour explains the Troubles and the peace process with honesty and great insight. The tour visits the locations of major events during the most turbulent period of the conflict.

A History of Terror is the No.1 Belfast Troubles tour. It runs every day starting at 10.30am. Tickets cost £22 per person.

A History of Terror was named #4 Experience in the UK at the TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards 2019 and Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards in 2019 in the category ‘Authentic Northern Ireland Experience of the Year’. It is graded 5 Stars by Tourism NI .

About the tour

Your tour will start with a short introduction to Irish and British history and the background to the start of the ‘Troubles’ in the late 1960s. We then visit seven locations in the city centre where major events occurred between 1971 and 1976. We use the stories of these events to explain what happened and why, and how it affected nearly every part of our daily lives.

What you will learn

This tour explains how the Troubles began. We tell the stories of the people involved, their place in the conflict and the effect these attacks and incidents had on the city and its people. We do all this from an entirely neutral, civilian perspective. The tour also shows how far the city has come since the ceasefires and Peace Process.

It is suitable for anyone visiting Belfast, regardless of how much or little you already know of our troubled past. The tour is a way for you to get a real feel for our history and make a deeper emotional connection with the city.

The 3+ hour walk around Belfast flew by, which was wholly down to Arthurs engaging manner, deep personal experience of the Troubles, the tragedy of the numerous story's he recounted, (thankfully balanced by the humour that interlaced his story-telling) and ultimately the enthusiasm and positivity he expressed towards the future of Northern Ireland and its people. Arthur is a born story-teller and the constant anecdotes, which reinforced his extensive local knowledge, made this a much more personal experience than I had expected. I was accompanied by my 4 teenage kids who before the tour knew very little of the Troubles. It's fair to say that it was an eye-opener for them, to the extent that its resulted in a number of meaningful dinner table discussions, La dramatic improvement on our usual Tictok distracted monosyllabic conversations !] Read more Written October 20, 2023

You get a very detailed and personal history of the Troubles and much more from a master storyteller whose love for Belfast and the people in it shines through. • troyn613 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Tour - an experience that only a Local can give It's very common to think of things that happened in another country and things that happened before your formative years as ancient history. As a mid-twenties non-Irish citizen, that previously applied to me and the troubles to an extent. The ability to highlight threads that continue to flow from 'historical' events up through the present day is the hallmark of what makes historical sources and recounts truly great. Arthur did this in a spectacular fashion on the Troubles Tour, in a way that only someone who lived during the time can do. The tour was very informative and struck a great balance between serious discussions/topics and a levity that provides ample context, personality, and hope. The tour is much much more than just a walk down to a Peace Wall for a photo. It is a full account of the history, the climate, and major players surrounding the troubles. I would highly recommend that anyone visiting Belfast take this tour. You will be a better informed citizen of both your home country and the world due to the knowledge and context that Arthur is able to provide. Read more Written May 26, 2023

This type of tour can (and should) only be conducted by someone who actually lived this experience, and Arthur did! His first hand account's are woven with historical facts, and brought to life with personal anecdotes, some funny and some incredibly tragic. Neither side of this conflict gets a pass, as Arthur makes sure that both sides receive their share of blame for the conflict that continues to this day. But in the end, he does bring us around to the fact that as long as HOPE has a chip, a chair, and chance, there will be peace in Northern Ireland, someday. Read more Written April 7, 2023

Remote Tour Included

No trip to Belfast is complete without an exploration into her sinister history. While the city and the country as a whole is now at peace, with a thriving culture and arts scene, bustling nightlife and wicked sense of humor, she still bears the scars of a brutal past.

This is a tour for those who want to better appreciate Northern Ireland, and understand how peace turned to war so dramatically, and to peace again — through reconciliation and outreach rather than oppression and surrender.

Walking through the culturally and historically rich West Belfast, through strongholds of both sides of the political divide lying just meters apart from one another, you’ll learn the story “The Troubles”, the euphemistic name given to a 30 year civil war. You’ll hear about the horrors of neighbors at war, communities burned to the ground and torn asunder, callous murders and bombings, unforgettable acts of resistance, political chaos and ultimately, the better side of the human spirit that brought and to the conflict, and fostered an environment where the people of Northern Ireland are now able to coexist in harmony.

  • Bombay Street - In 1969, The Troubles devolved from civil disorder into incendiary violence. We’ll explore the reasons for the outbreak of armed conflict in Northern Ireland, the beliefs of each side, and how Bombay Street became embroiled in the early chaos.
  • Bobby Sands Mural - Hunger Striker Bobby Sands remains a divisive figure in Northern Ireland, canonized by one side and lampooned by the other. At this artful wall painting, we’ll dig into his life, death, struggles and motives.
  • Garden of Remembrance - One of many memorials throughout West Belfast, this one is a stark reminder that this was a conflict experienced and fought by civilians as well as soldiers. At this landmark, we’ll also take a look at the role of women and children in war-ridden West Belfast.
  • The International Wall - Since its inception in 2003, the ever-changing International Wall has become an important place for politically-inclined street artists to showcase their work, attracting thousands of visitors every month.
  • Divis Tower - We’ll study how the Divis apartment block, recognized as the worst in Europe during the conflict, played a major role in The Troubles as both an Irish Republican stronghold and a British Army lookout.
  • Colonel John Henry Patterson’s Mural - Marking our arrival into Protestant, Loyalist West Belfast, this tribute is much more than a mere political statement. While taking a wider look at Loyalism in Northern Ireland, we’ll also learn about the incredible life of this author, explorer, man of war and hunter. You’ll also find out why this British Irish soldier became an Israeli icon!
  • Bayardo Memorial - The scene of one of many horrific attacks of The Troubles, we’ll look into the causes, details and fallout from this bombing which took innocent lives.
  • Court Credit Union - What does a financial establishment have to do with a civil war? Nothing much in truth, but here is the site where Frizzel’s Fish Shop, believed to be a meeting place for top ranking Loyalist paramilitaries, once was. We’ll learn of yet another callous bombing attack right here.
  • The Peace Wall - We finish our tour at the Peace Wall, a meeting place which separated two quarreling communities. When was it built, why does it still stand to this day and what is its cultural and political significance?

CRUMLIN ROAD GAOL TOURS

belfast tour troubles

The Troubles Walking Tour

Crumlin Road Gaol (known locally as ‘The Crum’) held prisoners since 1846 but took a leading role in the detainment of Republicans and Loyalists during the Troubles. Its connection to the Crumlin Road Courthouse and the introduction of interment without trial led to the highest prison population during its 150 years of operation. On your visit you to discover how internment, segregation and protests heightened tensions within the prison walls. As you make your way through the prison you will learn about the steps taken to combat this including special category status, criminalisation and self-segregation and how increasing tensions and continual attacks led to the decision to close the gates of ‘The Crum’ one final time in March 1996.

Walk in the footsteps of former prisoners through the infamous underground tunnel, explore the Circle and C Wing, view our newly renovated cells, these include the troubles cinema cell,  the escapes cell, along with interviews with former prisoners Jim McVeigh (former IRA) and Billy Hutchinson (former UVF), these interviews give our visitors a unique insight, not only to life in the gaol itself but also into the Northern Irish conflict. You will also learn the role of the security forces and see the modes of transports used by the British Army and RAF when they took to the streets during the Troubles. While on site you can view the Wessex helicopter, which was used during the conflict, you can also enter the sanger for a panoramic view of the Crumlin Road and surrounding areas. Don’t forget to explore our onsite Museum, which houses artefacts from the gaol, including prison crafts produced during the troubles.

This tour will allow visitors to visit both the nationalist republican Falls Road area with its spectacular murals on the world famous International Wall, and the unionist loyalist Shankill road, as well as the mural marking the historic hunger strike of 1981 which is dominated by the character and persona of Bobby Sands. Each leg of the tour will be guided by a former political prisoner from the area. This tour allows the visitor to see the British/Irish conflict from several perspectives, learning about everyday life in both communities. The joint Falls and Shankill political tour is an exploration of both republican and loyalist perspectives. It is also a personal tour because both guides will have played and keep playing a role for their community. This tour is perfect for those seeking to understand the roots of the recent phase of the British/Irish conflict and how it still impacts today’s life in Belfast.

Troubles Tour Belfast

How to choose the best Troubles tour of Belfast

Belfast and The Troubles: they go hand in hand. Even more than 20 years after the Good Friday Agreement , the city’s past is still very much present behind the scenes and a lot of visitors are keen to understand what this dark period in history was about. But how do you go about learning about the Troubles in an ethical and unbiased way and what’s the best way to go on a Troubles tour of Belfast?

First things first: what exactly are the Troubles?

Entire books have been written about this, but to put it shortly, the Troubles are the somewhat euphemistic name for a conflict that reigned from the late 1960’s till the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, all through Northern Ireland. The conflict was primarily political, with a rather big religious dimension to it.

In 1921, the island of Ireland was split into two: the independent Republic of Ireland (now simply known as “Ireland”) and Northern Ireland, that was kept part of the United Kingdom. The population in Northern Ireland was very divided: the loyalist/unionists, who were mainly protestant, were in favour of keeping the union with the United Kingdom, whereas the nationalists/republicans, who were mainly catholic, preferred to be reunited with the Republic of Ireland. The nationalist minority felt discriminated by the unionist government and police force and started campaigns to end this discrimination. The authorities, who were mainly loyalist, attempted to suppress these protests and that’s when the Troubles started.

After 30 years of unrest, rioting and bomb explosions, the death toll was over 3500 people…

How to choose a Troubles tour of Belfast?

To be honest it can be tricky to get an unbiased or objective viewpoint in Northern Ireland. Most people in Belfast have families or friends that were is some way affected by the Troubles. They will therefore have a strong opinion and believe that the conflict was all “the other side’s” fault. I have lived in Northern Ireland for over six years and not being born here, gave me a chance to see it from a “foreigner’s” point of view. If you are after an unbiased and objective opinion of what happened during the Troubles, I would suggest you to do one or several of the following Belfast Troubles tours:

1. Start off at the Ulster Museum

If you are interested in Northern Ireland’s complex history, then let this museum be your first stop! From the first inhabitants of the country all the way through to the recent history: the different floors will give you a detailed explanation of how this fascinating part of the UK became what it is today! There is a special section about the Troubles so this is the best place to start learning about the troubled past of Northern Ireland. A nice detail: the museum is free! Address: Botanic Gardens

2. Linen Hall Library

Housed inside a listed Victorian building, the Linen Hall Library is the only private library in Northern Ireland. It used to be a linen warehouse, back in the days when linen was Belfast’s main industry. There is a massive collection of posters on display dating back to the Troubles, as well as a digitised collection called “ Divided Society ” concentrating on periodicals and posters after the 1990’s. The resources cover the peace talks, ceasefires and negotiations which led to the Good Friday Agreement. Address: 17, Donegall Square North

3. DC Tours

If you are interested in the impact the Troubles had on everyday life in Belfast, then this tour is what you need. “DC” Tours stands for “Dead Centre Tours”, so called because during the times of the Troubles the city centre was pretty much like a ghost town after dark. During this 2 hour walking tour, you will visit various places that have been hit hard during the Troubles. Bars, restaurants, clubs, … places where crowds gather were never 100% safe during these dark days. At the start of the tour you get a small recap on the how and when of the Troubles and the tour ends with a ray of hope: the peace process that was the start for a brighter future for Belfast. Meeting point: at the front gates of Belfast City Hall More info: https://deadcentretours.com/

4. Conflicting Stories

Another walking tour, but one that focuses on West Belfast this time. During this 3 hour Belfast walking tour, you will walk along both sides of the Peace Wall, with ex-political prisoners from both communities. A republican ex-political prisoner will take you on a guided walk along the Falls Road and share his/her personal story, whilst a loyalist ex-political prisoner will accompany you along Shankill Road. They will both share their personal stories and give you their opinion/beliefs on the conflict. You finish of at the Peace Wall, that still divides both communities nowadays. Meeting point: Divis Tower Further information: https://www.belfastfreewalkingtour.com/belfast-political-tour

5. Crumlin Road Gaol Troubles Tour

This tour is pretty similar to the previous one, but you also get to visit Crumlin Road Gaol and in the end you’re rewarded by a nice pint of Guinness and a delicious stew! The total duration of the tour is 4.5 hours. You start off with a visit to the Crumlin Road Gaol, a former prison where a lot of the political prisoners were held during the Troubles. The guide will explain you about daily life in the prison and the executions that were carried out there. After this visit, you will start your walking tour in the Shankill area of town, accompanied by an ex-loyalist prisoner. After making your way to the Peace Wall, you will be handed over to an ex-republican prisoner who will show you around Falls Road. By then, you should definitely be ready for a break! Back at the Crumlin Road Gaol you can refuel with a pint of Guinness and a nice bowl of stew. Meeting point: Crumlin Road Gaol Further information: https://www.crumlinroadgaol.com/gaol-tours/

6. Black Taxi Tour

If you don’t want to walk, then the best way to learn about the various political murals that surround West Belfast is by doing a Black Taxi Tour of Belfast. You visit roughly the same areas as the “Conflicting Stories” tour, but by taxi. During the Troubles the “Black Taxis” were used to get from West Belfast to the city centre and back. During those days buses were often burnt out, so people had to rely on a different kind of transport service. The Black Taxis look like London-style black taxis. Nowadays they come in various colours and are often used to provide political tours, though some of them still have the same function as back in the old days. The driver is your guide and takes you to both, republican and loyalist, communities. He stops at the most important political murals, explains you what they represent and also takes you to the Peace Wall, where you can get out to scribble something on the wall, as many famous and less famous visitors have done before you.

The most difficult thing here is to find an unbiased tour. Since historically, the Black Taxis either serviced the loyalist or republican community, most of the drivers are still partial to one particular viewpoint and it’ll almost always shine through which one that is during the tour. That is the nature of Northern Ireland I’m afraid. There are many companies offering Black Taxi Tours. My advice would be to book one at the tourist information centre.

The Troubles played an important part in the history of Belfast and Northern Ireland, but the city is not all grim and doom! How about discovering the all famous “craic” in one of Belfast’s traditional pubs or visit one of the many free things to do in Belfast?

In most conflicts, the involvement of women is largely ignored or not well known, the recent Northern Irish conflict is no different. As violence raged across the city, the backbone of the community was the women of Belfast. This is the true and uncensored story of the women of Ireland in the recent Conflict. A living history.

As many struggled to raise their families in an increasingly violent environment, massive unemployment, social deprivation, and high rates of poverty controlling their daily lives, others consciously chose to directly involve themselves in the conflict. This is an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of those troubled times from a woman’s perspective. Meet with a local female to explore the streets of  West Belfast, stop at world-famous murals and learn the stories behind them and, immerse yourself in the recent history of the conflict and the aftermath from a female perspective.

Belfast Murals Tour

belfast tour troubles

The Belfast Murals Tour gives an insight into our history. Ireland had been in a perpetual state of conflict for thousands of years, both internally and against forces from outside our island. Most recently ‘The Troubles’ took place from the late 60’s and was ended with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Conflict, though to a much lesser extent still exists in Northern Ireland, and on your Belfast Murals Tour we’ll take you around our city and tell you our story.

We explain the significance of Prince William of Orange, who became King William III and fought against King James II in the Battle of the Boyne.

We’ll take you around infamous areas of Belfast where conflict took place, and y ou’ll gain an understanding of The Troubles narrative, from both the Catholic / Republican and Protestant / Loyalist points of view.

We take you to locations of cultural and historic significance, including Bombay Street, where many say a catalyst was struck for our 30 year conflict.

Learn about Loyalist and Republican paramilitary organisations and how they defended their communities, then y ou’ll learn the story of the many peace walls, meaning that you’ll come away from your tour with a better understanding of Irish and British history.

Your tour will stop at each location and allow lots of time to take photos so you can take home a piece of Belfast.

Your Belfast Murals Tour will end at the International Wall which is one of our most popular tourist locations, before you are returned to your pick-up point.

We spent a lovely 1.5 hours with Tom in his black cab while he took us around Belfast and explained in detail ( too much to recall all) about the past of the political situation that occurred in Belfast. The experience and detail of this tour was outstanding. We forgot a jacket in his black taxi and he delivered it back the next day to our hotel. Good man Tom and thanks.

Joanne Gallant

The complex history of Belfast and the experience of living through the Troubles. Really enjoyed the “peace wall” and wall art. Loved Belfast Castle.

Janeen Cunningham

Our group of 6 had a wonderful private Causeway tour with John. He adjusted the itinerary based on what we wanted, and regaled us with legends and knowledge about the area and locations we visited. Our children (age 7-12) didn’t love the driving, but said it was worth it to see the Dark Hedges, Dunluce Castle, and the Giant’s Causeway. We were also very pleased with the pub John took us to for lunch. Five Stars all around!

Leann Bringer and Family

Our guide Tommy did a wonderful job in trying to explain a complicated period of Irish history in a balanced way. He clearly stated the facts and when it was an opinion or a ‘wondering’. The tour is sobering for visitors but well worthwhile in doing. Thoroughly recommend it!

Kingsmill massacre an ‘overtly sectarian attack by IRA’, coroner rules

Inquest delivers findings 48 years after 10 Protestant workers were shot dead when their minibus was ambushed in County Armagh

The shooting dead of 10 Protestant workers at Kingsmill in Northern Ireland in 1976 was an “overtly sectarian attack by the IRA”, a coroner has ruled.

Nearly eight years after the inquest opened , Brian Sherrard delivered his findings in Belfast on Friday into the Troubles killings in County Armagh.

The inquest heard the workers’ minibus was ambushed outside the village of Kingsmill on their way home.

Those onboard were asked their religion and the only Catholic was ordered to run away. The killers forced the 11 remaining men to line up outside the van before opening fire. Alan Black, who was shot a number of times, was the sole survivor.

The shootings were claimed by a little-known republican paramilitary group, used as a front for the on-ceasefire IRA . No one has ever been convicted.

Sherrard said the “glaring omission” in the proceedings had been the absence of any evidence from those who caused the attack. He said: “Unlike other legacy inquests which have examined the actions of the state in directly causing death, those responsible for the deaths at Kingsmill have not given an account either personally or through any organisation or any political party.

“Numerous calls to assist and provide answers were met with silence.

“Accordingly the inquest did not receive disclosure from any individual concerned in the attack, nor their organisation, nor their political representatives although expert evidence was given that records may well exist.”

He said there had been no recognition from the perpetrators of the “utter wrongness” of the Kingsmill attack.

Decades after the shooting, police found a match between a palm print discovered on the suspected Kingsmill getaway vehicle and a suspect in the attack. One man was questioned by detectives in 2016 but not charged.

Sherrard said Ireland’s Garda Síochána was in possession of the palm print in 1976 but the police in Northern Ireland never asked for it.

The coroner said if the suspect had been questioned in the immediate aftermath of the attack and confronted with the fingerprint link to the van, it might have helped progress the investigation.

Alan Black

He outlined various errors and omissions in the police investigation after the shooting, but said those should be viewed in the context of the time and there should be no attempt to shift the blame away from those responsible for the murders.

He said there could be “little doubt” that the likely suspects were known to the security forces at the time.

In his conclusions, the coroner described the attack as “sophisticated and complex” and involving at least 12 IRA men. Sherrard also dismissed any suggestion that perpetrators were not pursued in order to protect an IRA informant, describing it as “unhelpful conspiracy theorising”.

Two individuals identified as suspects in the Kingsmill attack were later given “comfort letters” issued by the UK government to “on the run” republican suspects during the peace process.

Sherrard said the “OTR letters” had not impeded the inquest as no firm evidence connecting the individuals to the shootings had ever emerged.

The attack at Kingsmill was claimed by a group calling itself the South Armagh Republican Action Force.

Sherrard outlined extensive ballistics evidence to Belfast coroner’s court linking the weapons used at Kingsmill to a series of attacks carried out by the IRA. He said the “unassailable” evidence showed that the guns fired at Kingsmill were the “exclusive property” of the IRA.

The families of a victim of the Kingsmill massacre and the only survivor said the inquest into the killings had not answered their questions and called for a public inquiry.

John McConville died in the attack on 5 January 1976, while Black was seriously injured.

A joint statement from the McConville and Black families said: “At the start of the inquest eight years ago we were full of hope that the many difficult questions that have burdened us surrounding John’s murder and that of his colleagues and the attempted murder of Alan Black would be answered.

“However, as we progressed through the inquest our questions have not been answered and our concerns have grown.”

Speaking outside Belfast coroner’s court, Black described the inquest as a “Band-Aid”. He said: “I am so disappointed with this inquest.”
