2024 Kawasaki Vulcan: Every Model Explained

Kawasaki's iconic Vulcan range of cruisers is still going strong in 2024.

Key Takeaways

  • Kawasaki's Vulcan lineup features a variety of cruisers, from the sporty Vulcan S to the flagship Voyager, offering comfort and style.
  • The Vulcan range, rooted in the 1980s with the Vulcan 750, has evolved to include different models catering to a wider cruiser enthusiast base.
  • Despite being known for iconic families like Ninja and Z, Kawasaki's cruisers like the Vulcan 900 Classic offer traditional charm and performance.

Over the years, Kawasaki has produced motorcycles in almost every format and segment. The Japanese marque has established iconic families of motorcycles, such as the Ninja, the Versys, the KLX, and the 'Z' series of motorcycles .

However, the brand is no stranger to manufacturing cruisers either. The Vulcan range has been around since the 1980s, and in this article, we explore the current state of Kawasaki's cruiser lineup.

Why The Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Is A Muscle Cruiser Legend

An introduction to the vulcan family.

The Kawasaki Vulcan 750, launched in 1985, is the root of the entire contemporary Vulcan range. It was in production for over 20 years and was credited with being the first Japanese cruiser powered by a V-twin engine.

Though the rest of the world got their hands on the 750 as it was, the US had to make do with a model limited to 699cc and was dubbed the Kawasaki Vulcan 700 instead. Things changed the following year, and the US got the same global-spec machine as everyone else. The 750 remained largely unchanged over 22 years of production, undergoing only minor tweaks and cosmetic changes.

However, while the original Vulcan 750 remained an integral part of Kawasaki's lineup, the marque continued to offer more cruisers under the Vulcan moniker. Today, the lineup comprises four motorcycles - the Vulcan S, the Vulcan 900 Classic, the Vulcan 1700 Vaquero, and the Vulcan 1700 Voyager. These models are available in different variants to appeal to a wider demographic of cruiser enthusiasts.

Sports Cruisers

Kawasaki vulcan s.

Base MSRP: $7,349

The Vulcan S is a bit of an anomaly in the Vulcan family. It is the only motorcycle in the range to be powered by a parallel-twin mill rather than a V-twin like the rest of the range. The Vulcan S exudes retro charm while being a contemporary motorcycle under the skin . It has several old-school quirks, such as the tachometer with a proper, analog, sweeping needle rather than a flashy screen. The 649cc parallel-twin mill loves to be revved, contrary to what riders would expect from a cruiser.

On the flip side, however, there isn't a lot of low-end torque, and the engine comes alive higher up in the rev range in terms of power and responsiveness. Peak torque and power kick in at 7,500rpm and 6,600rpm, respectively, which are rather high numbers for a cruiser. While the engine may err more on the side of sportiness rather than cruising, this isn't the case with the rest of the motorcycle.

The riding position is typical cruiser-style—upright and relaxed, with forward-set footpegs and swept-back handlebars. The riding position is also adjustable since the bars, footpegs, and seat can all be tweaked. However, the adjustability comes at a cost since accessories need to be purchased from Kawasaki.

Here's Why The Kawasaki Vulcan S Is The Best Beginner's Motorcycle

Kawasaki vulcan s cafe.

Starting MSRP: $8,499

The Vulcan S Café is hard to classify under any pre-existing genre of motorcycles. While it is a cruiser in name, the sportbike engine, flyscreen, and perimeter frame say otherwise. It's part cruiser, part roadster, and part café racer.

It is largely the same machine as the Vulcan S, albeit with a few cosmetic upgrades to comply with the "Cafe" part of its moniker. It gets a striking three-tone paint scheme with sport red striping, a tinted wind deflector, and different tank badging. A solo seat and the lack of passenger footpegs additionally contribute to the café cruiser identity.

Classic Cruisers

Kawasaki vulcan 900 classic.

Base MSRP: $9,399

The Vulcan 900 sticks to a more traditional cruiser template than the Vulcan S. It is powered by a grunty, 903cc V-twin motor. A long wheelbase, wide handlebars, a low-slung stance, and chunky tires make the Vulcan 900 appear like a much larger bike. However, unlike proper, large American cruisers, the Vulcan is more versatile for daily use, thanks to its lighter weight and easy-going handling.

The chassis and suspension complement each other well to deliver commendable handling while cruising. The riding position is relaxed, and the entire package has the makings of a comfortable tourer with a few accessories and upgrades. Riders will rest easy knowing that they can pile the miles on the Vulcan, as durability and reliability aren't much of a concern with this Japanese cruiser.

Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom

Base MSRP: $9,899

Cruisers are meant to be old-school, which implies that a lack of modern technology and features is meant to add to their appeal. Riders can forget about power modes, traction control, and adjustable suspension because the Vulcan 900 Custom is about as basic as it gets. The focus is on keeping the riding experience earthy and traditional - it's just you and the motorcycle out on the open road, or rather, the urban jungle, since that's where this Vulcan is meant to thrive.

The 900 Custom gets a thin 21-inch front wheel and a 15-inch rim at the rear, suggesting form over function in this regard. The matte paint scheme and the blacked-out, parallel slash-cut exhaust pipes distinguish the Custom from the other Vulcan 900s.

Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT

Base MSRP: $10,399

The Vulcan 900 Classic and the LT share the same underpinnings, with the latter placing more of an emphasis on touring. It comes with the archetypal studded touring seat with a backrest for passengers, leather saddlebags, and a height-adjustable windscreen.

It shares the same five-speed transmission and single front and rear disc brakes as the 900 classic. The LT aligns more with traditional cruiser values and sensibilities due to its appearance and add-ons over the base model.

Here’s Why We Love The Kawasaki Vulcan Family

Bagger cruiser, kawasaki vulcan 1700 vaquero.

Base MSRP: $19,099

It isn't just the American manufacturers that have a grip on producing proper baggers. The Vaquero plays both a tourer and a cruiser to fulfill various roles, though the emphasis is skewed toward touring. The fairing is similar to the 1700 Voyager with a few changes. It does without the spotlights, employs a smaller fairing lower down, and the seat is smaller, too.

However, the Vaquero differs largely from the Voyager in terms of character. The 1,700cc long-stroke V-twin produces a hefty grunt right from the bottom, although there isn't much to be had at the top end. It also features bagger-esque creature comforts, such as an onboard audio system, locking storage compartments, and sealed saddlebags.

Touring Cruiser

Kawasaki vulcan 1700 voyager.

Base MSRP: $19.799

The Vulcan 1700 Voyager sits at the top as the king of the Vulcan family. It shares the same 1,700cc long-stroke V-twin with the Vaquero and features creature comforts like electronic cruise control and air-assisted shocks to provide maximum comfort for long hours in the saddle. It comes with an intercom-compatible audio system, dual-locking saddlebags, and a tail trunk.

It loses out to American alternatives only due to the name on the tank. The engine's performance and reliability work in its favor, and the 1700 Voyager certainly isn't lacking in comfort and features. It sits right up there with the Honda Gold Wing as a full-blown Japanese touring cruiser and is an excellent option for those in the market for a flagship cruiser.

The Future Of The Vulcan Family

Cruisers thrive on retro charm and appeal, which explains why the Vulcan is relevant today. Comfort, style, and renowned Japanese reliability cement the Vulcan's cruiser credentials.

These motorcycles are enjoyable to ride and easy to own and live with. However, in the face of ever-evolving competition that's more desirable and better equipped, Kawasaki would do well to update the entire Vulcan range to make it a cut above the rest in the future.

All-new eliminator and introduction of the 2024 kawasaki summer models.

Today marks the introduction of exciting new models to the 2024 Kawasaki lineup of products. The all-new Eliminator launches with an equally new, 450cc engine ideal for the North American market.

Also new for 2024 are the thoroughly revised Ninja ZX-6R and KX450/KX450X as well as the updated KLX300/KLX300SM that all receive important design and mechanical upgrades in their new model-year.

Here’s a closer look at all our new models’ features.

ALL-NEW – 2024 ELIMINATOR

● Powered by an entirely new 451cc parallel-twin ● Offers a relaxed, natural riding geometry and an accessible low seat height of 735 mm ● Lightweight build with Ninja 400-inspired trellis frame for a total weight of 176 kg* ● Round digital LCD instrumentation with smartphone connectivity ● Eliminator SE model adds headlight cowl, USB-C port, and SE seat *Weight of the base model only

The 2024 Kawasaki Eliminator becomes an all-new point of entry into the world of Kawasaki cruisers. With a design inspired by the original Eliminator with a long and low silhouette, it also borrows certain features from sportier models to create a dynamic, easy-to-handle, and comfortable ride that will appeal to a wide range of riders.

At its core, the Eliminator is powered by an all-new Ninja 400-derived 451cc parallel-twin tuned to produce ample low-end torque for easy low-speed maneuvering, but also strong and linear power for flexibility on the highway. The engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission with assist & slipper clutch.

The new trellis frame, also inspired by the Ninja 400, is supported by a 41 mm telescopic fork upfront and twin shocks at the back. The 18-inch front wheel receives a large, 310 mm disk with balanced actuation dual-piston caliper. The 16-inch wheel at the back gets a 240 mm disc with dual-piston caliper.

The design combines elements of the present and the past with a round LED headlight, a round LCD instrument gauge with smartphone connectivity via RIDEOLOGY THE APP, and a LED taillight placed at the end of a floating tail inspired by the model’s heritage. The ergonomics are designed to be comfortable, natural, and relaxed for nimble handling and confident riding.

The Eliminator SE also comes with a standard front headlight cowl, USB-C port enclosed in a waterproof casing, and two-pattern leather SE seat.

NEW – 2024 KX450

● New, redesigned cylinder head with new, central port resulting in increased power ● New aluminium perimeter frame ● New bodywork for optimized ergonomics and seamless position shifts ● New quick-release side cover ● New front Brembo brake system ● New ODI lock-on grips ● New Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) ● New power modes ● New smartphone connectivity app and remote tuning ability

The championship-winning KX450 becomes even mightier opponent thanks to serious upgrades and updates. At the center of our top-of-the-line competition machine is a revised engine with a new cylinder head that features new straight intake and exhaust ports with the exhaust positioned centrally for more direct air flow, which results in a stronger performance. The aluminium perimeter frame was redesigned to accommodate the redesigned engine and is now stronger and more flexible.

Sitting on top of the new frame is a revised bodywork designed to offer improved ergonomics and seamless integration of the all the panels ensure easy weights shifts. This also includes a new quick-release side cover for easy access and maintenance.

To further improve braking, the KX450 and KX450X are now fitted with a Brembo front brake caliper and master cylinder paired with a 270 mm disc, while a 240 mm disc with Nissin caliper and master cylinder handle the braking duties at the back.

Both models receive a flight of switchable electronic assists which makes them even more capable and flexible in different conditions. The three-level Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) will provide an adjustable level of grip on slippier surfaces while the two-level power modes allow riders to choose between two engine mapping. Riders will also get to adjust their tuning using the smartphone connectivity and RIDEOLOGY THE APP KX.

NEW – 2024 Ninja ZX-6R

● Updated design aligned with the new Ninja ZX aesthetic introduced on the Ninja ZX-10R ● Receives new round brake disks similar to the Ninja ZX-10R for increased braking power ● New Integrated Riding Modes (Sport, Road, Rain, Rider) ● New 4.3-inch colour TFT display with smartphone connectivity

The legendary Ninja ZX-6R is back for 2024 with several important updates to keep as thrilling as it’s always been. Following in the footsteps of the new-generation Ninja ZX-10R and the all-new Ninja ZX-4R, the 2023 Ninja ZX-6R receives a racy new design with a sharper fairing and a more compact headlight shape. The new fairing also integrates a sports windshield with holes that help relieve wind pressure in the cockpit and reduce buffeting at high speed.

Behind the new windshield, pilots can now select between four integrated riding modes (Road, Sport, Rain, Rider) via a 4.3-inch full-colour TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity using RIDEOLOGY THE APP.

NEW – 2024 KLX300 and KLX300SM

● Updated design and ergonomics inspired by the KX lineup ● New LED headlight

For 2024, the KLX300 and KLX300SM receive a few key upgrades to make them even more fun and versatile starting with new bodywork panels. New slimmer KX-style shrouds and new two-piece side covers not only give the models a sportier look but also create more comfortable ergonomics that allow the rider to easily shift in the saddle. A new, slimmer LED headlight offers improved visibility.

2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500 Review – First Ride

Sylvia Houston

Kawasaki has been dominating the realm of entry-level motorcycles, especially with the introduction of the Ninja 400 in 2018. In fact, they were so capable and enjoyable to ride that I bought one myself and it has become one of my favorite motorcycles in my stable. The Ninja 400 wasn't perfect, and I had my gripes about it. So, of course, I was very intrigued by the unveiling of the new Ninja 500. As luck would have it, I was fortunate enough to find myself invited to a press launch for the new Kawasaki in Malibu, California, to see what this new machine is all about. The Malibu area hosts some of the best canyon roads in the United States – a perfect proving ground for testing the new, larger displacement Ninja 500.

2024 Kawasaki Ninja 500

The Ninja 500 simply builds on an already successful platform from the 400. More than just a bigger engine, there are small styling and electronic upgrades, too. Best of all, the base price matches the outgoing 400.

Editor Score: 86.5%

  • The TFT display elevates the experience
  • Competitive pricing
  • As it was with the 400, the exhaust shield cramps your right foot
  • The little Ninja gained weight
  • Calling it a 500 is a bit deceiving

The first and most noticeable difference with the Ninja 500 is its appearance. Like its larger siblings, the Ninja 500 has a more sporty and edgy look. I personally find it much more attractive than the previous Ninja 400. The front end of the Ninja 500 looks more aggressive and stylish. Kawasaki opted for a more classic color scheme and even presented a 40th-anniversary edition boasting the classic lime green/pearl crystal white/blue livery. There are six different model variations for the new Ninja: the base Ninja 500, Ninja 500 KRT Edition, Ninja 500 ABS, Ninja 500 SE ABS, Ninja 500 KRT Edition SE ABS, and the Ninja 500 SE 40th Anniversary Edition ABS. The MSRP of these models range from $5,299 to $6,599. Considering the 2023 Ninja 400 also starts at $5,299, I was a bit surprised since the 500 is advertised as an upgraded and better version of the Ninja 400.

kawasaki voyager 2024

So, what are the differences between the model variations, and are they worth it? First, I appreciate that Kawasaki is still offering a base model without ABS. I understand and respect that ABS is a great feature, especially for entry-level riders, or in bad weather, but I find it to be intrusive sometimes, especially at the track.

The non-SE models received an upgrade to the instrument cluster, now using a full LCD panel instead of the previous Ninja 400 analog hybrid cluster. The new panel is still simple but has a much more modern look. It features a digital bar-style tachometer, fuel gauge, average and current fuel consumption, connected device notifications, an Economical Riding Indicator, speedometer, coolant temperature, a clock, and a service indicator. The SE variations come equipped with a TFT display offering crisp visibility. This dash also provides a shift lamp, average speed, battery voltage, and an oil change reminder. Both the TFT and LCD instruments have the capability for smartphone connectivity with the RIDEOLOGY app. Connecting a smartphone allows for notifications and also syncs with GPS to track rides. There’s even a maintenance log, which is pretty neat! The model I rode had the TFT dash, but honestly, it didn't impress me much. I liked the visibility of the screen, but I always prefer an analog tachometer over digital. Other additions exclusive to the SE models are LED turn signals, a 2.5-inch taller windscreen, a radiator screen, frame sliders, a seat cowl, a tank pad and knee pads, and a USB charger.

2024 kawasaki ninja 500 review first ride

Now, let's get into the mechanical components of the 2024 Ninja 500. The engine is heavily based on the Ninja 400’s power plant, using most of the same internal components. However, there are some major differences. The engine has a 451cc displacement and uses a newly designed crankshaft, connecting rods, and piston. I'll admit, I was confused by the "500" in the name for an engine that’s only 451cc. Sure, many motorcycles don't reflect their exact displacement, but this seems borderline egregious. The higher displacement was achieved by lengthening the stroke to 58.6 mm but keeping the same bore at 70 mm. What does this mean for the consumer? Usually, keeping the same bore but lengthening the stroke improves fuel efficiency but at the cost of peak power. It can also cause peak torque to be achieved at a lower rpm.

Kawasaki claims the upgraded internals allow the new engine to reach 51 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 31.7 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm (at the crank). The last dyno run of a Ninja 400 at Motorcycle.com, produced 44 hp at 10,000 rpm and 24.6 lb-ft at 8,300 rpm (at the wheel). An assist and slipper clutch is also included and has been slightly revised to handle the new increased engine capacity. During my ride on the 2024 Ninja 500 KRT Edition SE ABS, the clutch pull was noticeably smoother and easier than on the Ninja 400.

2024 kawasaki ninja 500 review first ride

The chassis, suspension, brakes, and wheels are virtually the same as the Ninja 400. The fork is non-adjustable with 4.7 inches of travel, and the shock is only adjustable for preload with 5.1 inches of travel. The front brake uses a single 310mm semi-floating disc with 2-piston calipers, and the rear brake uses a single 220mm disc with a single-piston caliper. When stopped, it was easy for me to put my feet on the ground and while riding my knees were bent but not uncomfortably. The front brake lever provides consistent pressure, and if you need to stop quickly, the two-piston caliper does surprisingly well. The seat height is manageable, even for riders with a 30-inch inseam like myself, and it is very comfortable. The claimed curb weight for the model I rode, the 2024 Ninja 500 KRT Edition SE ABS, is 381.5 lbs. That is 15.5 pounds heavier than the 2023 Ninja 400 KRT Edition with ABS.

2024 kawasaki ninja 500 review first ride

Comparing my Ninja 400 base model to the Ninja 500 KRT Edition SE, the 500 does edge out the Ninja 400 slightly in terms of engine performance. Even with the higher curb weight, I didn't feel too much of it when accelerating, cornering, and stopping. That said, I was hoping for a more noticeable power increase and less, or even the same curb weight. I noticed the front ABS seemed to activate with much less brake pressure than I was expecting. Likewise, the rear ABS also stepped in well before I would have wanted it, becoming too intrusive for my liking during our ride through the canyons.

2024 kawasaki ninja 500 review first ride

My biggest complaint is the location of the exhaust. Just like the Ninja 400, Kawasaki placed the exhaust too close to the right-side foot peg. With my women's size 8.5 shoes, I am constantly hitting my heel on it, which impedes my riding position. This might sound petty, but it reduces comfort and confidence when I am constantly adjusting my foot position during spirited rides.

I attempted to use the RIDEOLOGY app before our ride began but it would not connect to my smartphone because there were 13 other journalists trying to do the same thing.

2024 kawasaki ninja 500 review first ride

Moving on, here's what I enjoyed about the 2024 Ninja 500. The looks and styling are far more appealing and intense. I appreciate that it resembles the bigger Ninja ZX-6R and Ninja ZX-10R, giving it a more aggressive appearance. Even though I personally prefer an analog tachometer, I found the new TFT dash to be more fitting to the new style of the Ninja 500. If one is able to get the RIDEOLOGY app functioning, I'm a big fan of tracking maintenance and think this capability encourages riders to engage more with their motorcycle. I love the added hazard button! I can't stress enough how important I believe it is to have a safety function like this, especially for entry-level riders. And lastly, the price of these new machines is attractive. It's fair enough for entry-level or expert riders, and it honestly surprised me. I expected an outrageous difference from the Ninja 400, but in fact, they start at the same price!

2024 kawasaki ninja 500 review first ride

Overall, the new 2024 Ninja 500 is an excellent motorcycle. It's edgy enough to grab attention, nimble enough to handle the canyons, comfortable for spirited riding or commuting, and cost-effective. I believe that most riders with a Ninja 400 would upgrade to a ZX-6R or ZX-10R over buying a Ninja 500, but that being said, this bike is a great choice for new riders that want a motorcycle they can learn on and love riding.

Sylvia Houston

My motorcycle addiction began in 2013 after buying a 1986 Ninja 250 to save money on gas. We all know, it motorcycles never truly save anyone money :). Most of my riding experience has been sport bikes on the street and the track. I recently started riding dirt bikes on trails and a little bit on MX. I am a certified MSF instructor, control rider for multiple track day organizations, and a current expert supermoto racer. I like to save money when I can so I do most of the maintenance on my motorcycles. Valve adjustments, engine rebuilds, and tire changes just to name a few.

I have a 2023 Ninja 400, and it is just fantastic. I’ve considered upgrading to the 500, but mine has a full exhaust and tune, and now has equal power to the 500, but weighs about 21 lbs less! Really no need to upgrade, and a used 400 in great shape would now be a heck of a deal.

Greg

Wait a minute here,… the old Ninja 500 (EX500) made about 60 HP, and 34 ft lb of torque. Where is the technological advancement???

Justin Waller

My first bike was an EX500, from before when they started calling it the Ninja 500. It would be cool to see the old Ninja 500 compared with this new Ninja “500”.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

kawasaki voyager 2024

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
