Well before the microbrewery trend swept across the country, Milwaukee has always been home to some great breweries. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or just looking for something to do in Milwaukee on a Saturday afternoon, here’s a list of all the best breweries in Milwaukee and the best brewery tours.

We have personally been on each and every one of them and have taken friends, family, and even bachelor parties to most of them. Trust us, we’ve done our “research”!

1. Milwaukee Brewing Company

Milwaukee Brewing Company has a long history in the city than most patrons first assume. While the current brewing operations are only a few years old, the brewery technically goes back to the late 1990s with the micro-brews offered at the Milwaukee Ale House.

Thankfully, those beers became popular enough for operations to expand to Walker Point, and now, a second location in the old Pabst brewing neighborhood. Known as MKE Brewing, the company is known for putting together some awesome beers that are available throughout the city at area bars and liquor stores.

The Walkers Point location is conveniently located near numerous top-quality restaurants, some of the best Mexican restaurants , and popular bars, so there is no shortage of things to do either before or after your brewery tour.

The tour at the Walkers Point location of Milwaukee Brewing Company shouldn’t be missed. The real highlight is not necessarily the tour itself—though it certainly is interesting, and you will learn a few things about the brewing process.

Instead, the real highlight is the opportunity to sample numerous MKE beers before and after the tour. Be sure to pace yourself because you will have the opportunity to sample most of the beers currently on tap, in addition to receiving some souvenirs and a token for a beer at one of the nearby bars. For a true Milwaukee beer experience, stop at Milwaukee Brewing Company.

At least for locals, Lakefront Brewery needs no introduction. As one of the first microbreweries on the scene, Lakefront has a downtown location and one of the coolest brewery spaces in the city.

The beer is great, the beer hall to drink it in is worth a visit alone, and the food is perfectly crafted to make you thirsty for another beer or two. Lakefront Brewery has the best cheese curds in Milwaukee ; order some and wash them down with a beer.

Lakefront also boasts one of the most popular Friday fish fries in the city. Lakefront’s beers can now be found all across the country, so why not check out where the whole thing got started by visiting Lakefront Brewery the next time you are in town.

The tours at Lakefront are designed to be one-part informative and one-part entertaining. Along with beer samples and glass, you can also expect to learn at least a little bit about the history of Lakefront Brewery and the brewing process, along with getting some good laughs along the way.

Plan on booking ahead since the tour is one of the most popular in the city. When you book, make sure to leave enough time beforehand for beer samples and some bar snacks to get you prepared for the tour.

About the Brewery tour: A local favorite and probably the best Milwaukee brewery tour, Lakefront Brewery serves up lots of laughs along with the beers. Lakefront tours are fun if it’s your first tour or tenth. While they don’t take the tours too seriously, their beer is another story.

One of Milwaukee’s oldest microbreweries, their beer is some of the best in the city. Along with a good time, you’ll get 4 samples of Lakefront Brewery’s best beer and even some stuff you can’t find in the stores.

For the brewery tour, enter the large doors on N. Commerce Street and purchase your tour ticket, which comes with a souvenir glass and 4 samples. Tours start every hour on the hour except Saturdays, which run every half hour. On weekdays you can still tour the brewery, but it’s best to check the current schedule for times.

History of the Brewery: 

• Lakefront Brewery Tour Address: 1872 N. Commerce St.
• Tour Hours: Times vary, typically every hour or half-hour from Noon-7:00pm or 8:00 pm. Check online for availability.
• Cost: Weekdays: $9, Weekends: $11

3. Miller-Coors

Miller-Coors is one of the largest beer makers in the world, and part of its history and current operations are located right here in Milwaukee. While many cities have a micro-brewery for tourists to visit, few cities have a premier large-scale brewery operation where visitors can see firsthand how beer is produced on a massive scale.

The history of Miller and its relationship to the city is also on full display for visitors to the brewery, and the entire brewery is centrally located, making it an easy trip from downtown. To learn more about one of the biggest breweries in the country, stop over to Miller-Coors for a quick and inexpensive tour.

The tour at Miller-Coors was just recently revamped. Though now it costs a little bit of money, visitors can expect a higher quality tour with a few more perks as well. Visitors can still expect to watch a short documentary about the brewery’s history and to get a behind-the-scenes look at parts of the brewing operation, but now there are a few more perks.

These include souvenirs, tokens for area bars, and the chance to try some experimental beers only available on-site. The best part of the tour is getting to see some of the historic sites, like the caves where beer used to be stored. After the tour, you will certainly gain a better appreciation of some of America’s favorite beer options.

Our Top Pick: 4 Brewery Tour with 8 – 6oz samples – This tour pays a visit to some of Milwaukee’s classic breweries and some up and coming ones. Safely aboard a small group transport (14 people max), you’ll visit Lakefront Brewery, Gathering Place Brewing, Black Husky Brewing, and Company Brewing during a 3.5-hour tour with two 6oz samples at each!

One of the best things to do in the Summer in Milwaukee is to take a brewery tour by boat. Float down the river from one brewery to the next, sampling all along the way. Here are our two favorite ways to tour Milwaukee’s Breweries by boat!

Milwaukee River Boat – 3 Pub Cruise – On evenings and weekends you can take a boat tour stopping at several pubs and some breweries along Milwaukee Riverfront. Grab a group of friends or join one of the main public tours.

Self Powered Pedal Tavern River Beer Cruise – One of the most fun ways to explore Milwaukee is by pedaling your way down the river aboard the pedal tavern, which is powered by you! Burn off the beer calories (or just kick back) by pushing the bike pedals that drive a big paddlewheel, propelling you down the river and to more beer.

It’s a super fun way to see the city and try some great beers along the way. Some tours are BYOB, or they have other options for groups and private tours as well.

Milwaukee has always been known as the “Brew City” since it has a history of housing large-scale breweries and because of the city’s German heritage. It comes as no surprise then that the city has a thriving micro-brewery scene.

Starting in the 1980s, microbreweries began to pop up in the city, but it wasn’t until more recently that there’s been an explosion of options when it comes to microbreweries and taprooms. Nearly every neighborhood in the city has at least one micro-brewery, making coming up with a list of the best in the city extremely difficult. Read below to learn about some of the best breweries Milwaukee has to offer.

• Good City Brewing

Good City Brewing opened just a few years ago, but it has quickly developed into one of the top breweries in Milwaukee. For starters, the location in the middle of the trendy East Side couldn’t be more convenient, and if that wasn’t enough, the brewery plans on opening a second location downtown right near the new Fiserv Forum.

Besides making really quality beer, Good City Brewing also hosts a truly destination-worthy restaurant, and the space is ideal for getting together with friends. Not many other breweries can boast of having an incredible rooftop bar area for sipping micro beers outside on a warm Milwaukee day.

The tours at Good City Brewing enable you to get a look at the behind-the-scenes operations and to sample some of the brewery’s numerous beers on tap. Like most tours, you get some samples and a souvenir, but more importantly, the tour gives you an excuse to stop by the brewery on a Saturday afternoon and to stay for some more beer paired with excellent food.

• MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom

MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom recently opened a Milwaukee location by setting up shop right on the edge of Walkers Point near the popular Mexican restaurant Conejitos, the well-liked Iron Horse Hotel, and Great Lakes Distillery—in other words, the location offers plenty of convenient things to do. The brewery itself is top-notch and is located in a trendy space.

What makes MobCraft really unique is that they crowdsource beer flavor ideas, pick a winner every month, and after brewing it up, offer it to the public in their tasting room. You can check online to see current and past winners, and if you are feeling creative, you can even suggest an idea yourself.

There are two types of tours to choose from at MobCraft: the regular tour and the technical tour. For fans of brewing who don’t need all the technical details, the regular tour offers a great way to sample a few of the beers, see the behind-the-scenes brewing operations, and meet some of the charismatic brewery employees.

MobCraft offers a selection of sour beers, which require a unique brewing process, so the tour can also provide insight into how sour beers are made. The taproom itself offers a comfortable and fun place to hang out before or after the tour, and given its location, there is no shortage of options for places to eat or drink to keep the night going.

Sprecher Brewing Company

About Sprecher Brewery in Milwaukee: FounderRandal Sprecher got his taste for craft beer while in Europe and fell in love with German-style beers and couldn’t quench his thirst for what was available at the time beer in Milwaukee, so he started to make his own.

Sprecher Brewing Company prides itself on being one of the first microbreweries in the area. Since its humble beginning, Sprecher has grown to include numerous taprooms and restaurants and a host of beer, cider, and sodas to choose from, which are available in numerous bars and around the region in liquor stores.

Sprecher brews an extensive list of beers and ciders and is somewhat unique in also offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic sodas. In other words, it’s pretty impossible for someone not to find at least one Sprecher product that pleases their taste buds. For the main brewery, head north of Milwaukee to Glendale, or if this isn’t possible, head down to Walkers Point to check out their new tasting room.

About the Sprecher Brewery Tour:   There are numerous tour options at Sprecher Brewing. From regular tours available throughout the week to private tours and private tastings, there are options available for anyone looking for a quick activity on the weekend to more well-planned social or business events.

Regardless of which type of tour you go with, you can expect to see the brewing operations, learn about the history of Sprecher Brewing, and have the opportunity to sample numerous Sprecher products—there are so many you will almost certainly want to purchase some to take home for later. Options like beer tastings also come with cheese pairings, which can be a really unique experience even for experienced microbrewery tourists.

• Third Space Brewing

Third Space Brewing is only a few years old but entered the scene with award-winning beer and an awesome space located minutes from downtown and the Marquette University campus.

Housed in what appears to be a large warehouse, Third Space Brewing features a cozy and spacious interior with board games scatted around, as well as a large beer garden area behind the brewery where you can usually expect at least one food truck to set up shop.

In other words, you are sure to find a comfy spot for a drink regardless of the weather when you visit the brewery. Though they have a vast list of rotating tap beers, be sure to try at least one of their award-winning beers, like the Unite the Clans Scotch Ale.

Though it may be tempting to forego the tour given how nice Third Space’s tasting room is, you may still want to consider it on a Saturday afternoon. Not only will you get a souvenir glass and samples, but you also get an enjoyable and informative tour. The tour groups are usually pretty small, making it easy to ask questions and learn about the brewery operations and how Third Space Brewing got its start.

Plan accordingly so you can hang out after and enjoy some of the beers that you just learned about.

Large Scale Milwaukee Breweries

Miller brewing – millercoors.

The last big brewery standing in Milwaukee is MillerCoors, as it is known today. However, the history of this brewery dates back to 1855, when Frank Miller first started brewing beer in what is now the western part of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee was a good choice for a brewery because of the excellent water source, Lake Michigan. The water is naturally good quality and well suited for beer making. The water is what drew most brewers here, and the long German heritage of the city likely played a part too.

Leinenkugel’s Brewery Milwaukee

While you may have seen the big Leinenkugel’s Brewery sign from the freeway in Milwaukee, the actual brewery is in Chippewa Falls is about hours from Milwaukee. However, you can, at times, get a taste of this Wisconsin born beer while at the MillerCoors Brewery Tour. Leinenkugel’s does not have brewery tours in Milwaukee, but it does have a taproom to sample some of its brews.

The tour starts with a pivate tour of the production facility at Pilot Project Brewing in the iconic Pabst brewery complex. From there, we explore other venues in the complex including Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery & the Brewhouse Inn & Suites where we view the majestic Pabst brew kettles of yesterday. We end at the highly reputed Central Waters Brewing. All along the way, we learn about Milwaukee beer history while interacting with brewery artifacts “show & tell” & engaging fun beer trivia.

The tour starts at the wonderful Brewhouse Inn & Suites in the historic Pabst brewery complex where we view the 6 majestic Pabst brew kettles.  We continue through the Pabst complex with a walk to the Deer Deer District, the city's marquee entertainment venue that is home to the Milwaukee Bucks.  We then explore the historic Old World Third St District & River Walk as we learn about old Kilbourntown & Juneautown in downtown Milwaukee. The varied architecture, both past & present, will be highlighted. We then end at the city's newest food hall, 3rd St. Market Hall. Tour also includes:  Wisconsin lingo, artifacts "show & tell," & engaging stories & fun facts throughout.

Why? Because I’m a beer-loving Milwaukean who loves to spend some of my free time sampling beers from Milwaukee’s breweries. I’ve lived in Milwaukee for 20 years and have loved watching (and participating in) the evolution of the Milwaukee beer scene.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, earned the nickname “Brew City” nearly two centuries ago from the early beer barons who settled in the area. Names like Frederick Miller, Jacob Best, Captain Pabst, and Joseph Schlitz are revered in the city’s rich brewing heritage. 

Many of these macro breweries have survived by changing and creating new recipes to appeal to the masses. But for craft beer aficionados, many amazing Milwaukee breweries are carrying on the Brew City tradition.

The Best Craft Breweries in Milwaukee

With so many craft breweries in Milwaukee, where do you even start?

As a guy who enjoys almost every kind of beer (follow me on the Untappd app @CraigMKE), I’ll point you in the direction of my favorite places in town. I’ll also share some places that might be more up your alley than mine based on their local popularity.

Lakefront Brewery

Since 1987, Lakefront Brewery has been a Milwaukee craft brewing icon, delivering consistently delicious brews, and always has something for everyone. Their incredibly drinkable flagship, Riverwest Stein, can be found on tap at most bars in the city due to its enduring appeal.

But Lakefront Brewery is far from a one-trick pony. They offer an entire roster of year-round, seasonal, and limited-release beers in nearly every style imaginable, including two gluten-free beers so nobody feels left out.

The historic beer hall is second to none and offers a huge selection of taps and dining (more on this later). From spring through fall, they serve beer at their newly renovated patio situated along the Milwaukee River to create the perfect atmosphere.

Lakefront Brewery is also one of the few breweries in Milwaukee that still do tours. And it’s one of the best brewery tours in the city.

And if you’re up for an ultimate Milwaukee experience, you can reserve the original Bernie Brewer chalet that adorned the outfield at Milwaukee County Stadium for a private dinner for two. 

The Bottom Line: Lakefront Brewery offers the city’s most diverse and consistently drinkable beers.

Eagle Park Brewing Company

A relative newcomer to the craft brewing scene in Milwaukee, Eagle Park Brewing Company has delivered some of the city’s tastiest, most unique brews. 

As beer trends come and go, craft breweries often diversify their offerings to include whatever is popular at the moment. The folks at Eagle Park doubled down and created an amazingly original array of hazy IPAs, milkshake IPAs, and hard seltzers to go along with more traditional styles.

There is no subtlety to the Eagle Park beers- each loaded with unmistakable flavors of fruit, hops, or even maple syrup. Even the hard seltzers blow your taste buds away, unlike the hints of flavor you get from sipping a La Croix.

At the Milwaukee location, there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. There’s even an additional bar housed outside a former metal shipping container for when it gets really busy.

The Bottom Line: Always innovating and pushing the limits of what beer is, Eagle Park is not to be missed if you’re up for trying something a little more in-your-face.

Supermoon Beer Company

With the addition of a taproom, Supermoon Beer Company has become one of the top breweries in Milwaukee.

Supermoon is a small family-owned brewery located in the Bay View neighborhood. They brew their beers in what used to be a basement/garage of a multi-unit house. And their taproom is located upstairs in one of the renovated apartments.

Their rustic, funky, and barrel-aged beers provide huge depths of flavors while staying light and quaffable. The beers are always interesting and provide a great subject for in-depth beer discussions.

With their limited releases, you will find something new and interesting whenever you visit the brewery.

Good City Brewing

Sometimes, you have to go with what you know. And if you know you love hop-forward beers, then Good City Brewing should be on your shortlist.

While they offer various styles, their perfectly balanced double dry-hopped IPAs, and pale ales are the clear go-to’s. Experimenting with aromas and mouthfeel by incorporating different hop combinations ensures that no two of their beers will taste the same to discerning hopheads.

Their two Milwaukee locations, while equally great, are quite different experiences. The East Side location is in a great area of town with lots of local restaurants and bars and offers plenty of indoor seating and a rooftop patio on weekends. Their immaculate newer location in the Deer District (as made famous by the 2021 NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks) is modern industrial with indoor and outdoor balcony seating.

The Bottom Line: If you’re a hop head, you will love sampling a large variety of hop-forward beers, each with its unique combination and balance.

Indeed Brewing Company

You may already be familiar with Indeed Brewing Company from their great lineup of beers coming out of Minneapolis, MN. At the pilot brewhouse and taproom in Milwaukee, you’re going to find the Indeed beers you’re familiar with, as well as ones that can only be found here.

Used as a smaller-scale testing ground for beer innovation, Milwaukeeans are happy to be used as guinea pigs. You’ll find an ever-changing selection of styles ranging from refreshing low-alcohol radlers to big-filling pastry stouts.

Another wonderful part of this pilot tap house is that they’ll use Wisconsin products to create interesting newcomers, including a wood-aged red ale using Door County, WI cherries. Seltzers and hard kombucha are offered for our gluten-free friends.

The large indoor taproom can accommodate larger groups if needed and includes a back room where the doors can be opened to feel like you’re outside. There are a few outdoor tables in front just off the street and also an amazing rooftop seating area across the street called UpTop in the warmer months.

The Bottom Line: If you’re coming in a larger group whose tastes in beer run the gamut, there will be something for the adventurers and more traditionalists.

Central Waters Brewing Company

Another Milwaukee satellite brewery,  Central Waters Brewing Company , comes to us from rural Amherst, Wisconsin. Dropping by their historic Brewery District location in an old church on the former Pabst campus is a must for any beer enthusiast. And if you are in the area, check out one of our favorite tours in Milwaukee at Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery.

Similar to Indeed Brewing Company, Central Waters has a dedicated Milwaukee brew house focused on creating exclusive local offerings that are often innovative but always interesting. Of course, their flagships and many Amherst location exports are available as well, creating a diverse lineup of beer styles suitable for any palate.

Beer lovers with a “go big or go home” mentality will swoon with delight over the Brewer’s Reserve and bourbon barrel-aged stouts that are highly sought after. Clocking in anywhere from 11 to nearly 20% ABV, Central Waters creates flavorful, balanced, and boozy beers perfect for sipping on a chilly Milwaukee evening.

The historic taproom is large yet cozy, with plenty of room at the wraparound bar and many tables. The private balcony and outdoor beer garden can be rented for private group events. And if you’re hungry, do not pass up  Troublemakers Cocina’s  flavor-forward take on Mexican cuisine. Some of the best “fancy” tacos in the city.

The bottom line: The diverse beer list and historic locale will please any crowd, but the big beers are where it’s at for those feeling a little more adventurous.

Company Brewing

If you’re up for exploring a more diverse, offbeat neighborhood brewery in Milwaukee, then Company Brewing in the Riverwest neighborhood is right up your alley.

After several failed attempts to develop a brewery in this location, the folks at Company Brewing found their niche by creating a diverse roster of highly drinkable beers. You’ll always get a solid offering, whether a sour fruited gose or an imperial oatmeal milk stout.

While they might not always have a ton of new and experimental beers on tap, their lineup is solid. For more discerning beer enthusiasts, you can be sure that their styles and descriptions will match your expectations.

Their large indoor taproom has lots of seating, and there’s a stage for an occasional concert or show. The adjoining outdoor courtyard is huge and has a huge projector screen for broadcasting the big game.

The Bottom Line: Company Brewing is an above-average brewery with a decent variety of beers. If you’re willing to go a little out of your way to this funky, communal neighborhood, you’ll immediately sense the welcoming camaraderie and feel at home.

Third Space Brewing

There’s no glitz, no gimmick, and nothing but a great lineup of consistently good beers at Third Space Brewing . Even though many of their most popular beers are hop-forward, the array of offerings is vast.

Just minutes away from the vibrant Third Ward district, you’ll be glad you took the slight detour to sample their huge variety of beers and styles. Take it easy with a 5% ABV fruited sour, or go big with a 12% ABV barrel-aged Russian imperial stout.

You know the brewery takes their beer, especially their IPAs, very seriously. Third Space plays host to the annual Wisconsin IPA Fest, where peers and ticket-holder votes determine who will win the crown for best IPA in all of Wisconsin.

And although their taproom is nice, the huge outdoor beer garden is an essential stop as the weather allows. Every day feels like a party out there with a fresh, cold tap beer in hand.

The Bottom Line: There are a lot of good beers here, and it’s a really fun place to hang out, especially outside in their massive beer garden. Unfortunately, as of this moment, they do not offer any gluten-free or beer alternative options. 

1840 Brewing Company

1840 Brewing Company may legitimately have some of the best beers in town. They offer a great mix of bottle-fermented extreme beers that push the limits of styles. But they also have 10 taps that lean a little more traditional but so polished and palatable.

They describe themselves as an urban farmhouse brewery, which seems legit. They take the time and effort needed to concoct amazing beers instead of churning out a new one to see what sticks.

Unfortunately, there is no outdoor seating – only a smaller indoor space with limited seating in the taproom in trendy Bay View.

The Bottom Line: The beers are all pretty amazing and delicious. Make this a stop on your beer tour, but go early as it gets pretty crowded with the limited space.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

For one reason or another, these Milwaukee breweries didn’t make my “best of” list. But they do deserve a mention and a visit if you’re going to be staying in Brew City for a while.

Enlightened Brewing Company

While many Milwaukeeans are fans of Enlightened Brewing Company , in my opinion, the beers don’t quite match up to my “best of” list. However, the beers go down easy, and they have a huge taproom and some patio space.

The Bottom Line: There’s nothing exceptional about the beers, but they do everything decently enough. It’s worth stopping if you’re wandering around the hip Bay View neighborhood and want a fresh, cold pint in an open, inviting taproom.

Black Husky Brewing

Another Milwaukee import, Black Husky Brewing , expanded its market by moving here from Northern Wisconsin after it found success with its flagship Black Husky Pale Ale. This is another place to stop when in the eccentric Riverwest Neighborhood for a decent beer. 

The Bottom Line: Their hop-centric offerings are pretty good and worth a try, while everything else is pretty good but unexceptional. The outdoor space is small, but both the outdoor and indoor spaces are dog-friendly.

Mobcraft Brewery

One of the first crowdsourced breweries in the United States, Mobcraft Brewery creates a new beer every month based on the flavors that received the most votes from its patrons. They also create a bevy of unique beers on their own – some of which can get pretty wild. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and a large tap list.

The Bottom Line: Most of the beers on tap are created with the intention of pushing the envelope a little or a lot. And while I feel they are quite interesting and fun to try, I have not found any to be exceptional.

City Lights Brewing Company

To get a glimpse into some Milwaukee history and enjoy some tasty brews, it’s worth going out of your way to visit City Lights Brewing Company .

Nestled in the industry-laden Menomonee River Valley, the brewery moved into a one-of-a-kind building. Constructed in 1902 for the Milwaukee Gas Light Company, its purpose was to facilitate the coal gasification process for the iconic Milwaukee street lamps.

But don’t just go for the Milwaukee history lesson – the beers are also great. Their flagship Coconut Porter is just as palatable in the heat of the summer months as well as the cold Milwaukee winters. 

The rest of their lineup of beer-style standards is equally as solid and ranges from a Hazy IPA to a Mexican Lager. Unique to the area, City Lights’ gluten-free contribution is a variety of sparkling hard teas. 

While the taproom isn’t enormous, it’s worth checking out for the beautiful restoration they’ve done inside this historical gem. The outdoor patio space is large and is adjacent to the Menomonee River.

The Bottom Line: Come for this little slice of Milwaukee history, and stay for the lineup of traditional beers and fruity and refreshing sparkling hard teas.

Before Luke Combs plays in front of the 'best fans' for his Milwaukee concerts this week, he tours Miller Brewery and even shotguns a beer

Before Luke Combs kicks off his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour in Milwaukee this week, he went on another kind of tour. One that is quintessentially Brew City.

Combs, one of country music's biggest stars, is playing two shows at American Family Field : One Friday and another Saturday. But ahead of that, he took a tour of the Miller Brewery . And, we got to tag along.

Yes, he was every bit as kindhearted, down-to-earth and genuine as he seems. And yes, he shotgunned a beer just like he does on stage. Except this time, he was hanging out on a brewhouse rooftop with the iconic giant red Miller sign and the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark as his backdrop.

Not only did Combs — a longtime Miller Lite fan and years-long partner — see where the magic happens, he also checked out the specialty packaging on cases and cans that's coming out in honor of his blockbuster tour.

"It's just surreal, you know?" Combs told the Journal Sentinel. "I feel like I get to live so many amazing, surreal moments. And, I'm really thankful for that for sure. It's crazy. It's crazy."

Here's what we learned about Combs' tour and what he got into on the Miller tour. And, how about his eight Academy of Country Music Awards nominations that were announced earlier this week? We asked him about those, too.

A or A+ shows don't cut it for Combs. He's shooting for A++.

"I try to do everything I can do to take care of my voice, take care of myself, make sure that we're doing everything we can," Combs said. "People that come are the only reason we get to do what we do. Putting on an A++ show is really important to me."

About to embark on his 25-date stadium tour, he's excited — and "a little nervous."

"You feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain and you're looking at the top a little bit," he said.

But after last year's "Luke Combs World Tour," he said he feels more prepared for what's ahead of him.

"We've played everywhere all over the world," Combs said. "But, the Midwest, it feels like home to me. So, good place to start it."

HOW TO AVOID TRAFFIC: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend

Combs, who grew up in North Carolina, hadn't been anywhere close to Milwaukee when he started his music career — his first plane ride came at age 25. But, he remembers his earlier stops up here fondly.

He opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made an appearance at Farm Aid at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

"The Midwest is like the best fans in the world," Combs said. "I mean, honestly. People probably say that all the time."

But, that doesn't mean pulling out of the driveway Tuesday night wasn't hard after the "amazing" time he spent with his "awesome" wife Nicole and their two sons — Tex and Beau — these past few months. Fortunately, he won't have to miss his other half too long. She'll be headed up this way this weekend.

What will always make it onto Combs' setlist this time around? "The songs that people would expect," Combs shared.

"Playing all the hits," he said. "That's why people are there, and I want to give them what they want."

But, each night of the tour will have a different vibe.

Combs' opening acts Friday — in the order they'll hit the stage — are the Wilder Blue, Charles Wesley Godwin and Cody Jinks.

"Friday's more in the Americana, singer-songwriter world," Combs said. "So, our set reflects that a little bit. But, obviously, still playing all the hits."

Saturday's openers will be Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

"Saturday night is more mainstream, Top 40 country stuff, which is what I do, really," Combs said.

Combs loves watching Jinks and Davis perform — they keep him honest, he said — and he knows they're going to kick some you know what.

The first opener will start at 5:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tailgating will be permitted. Give yourself plenty of time to drive in and get through security.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. Saturday with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at Am Fam Field's Third Base Plaza, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase.

Luke Combs' love for Miller Lite and his visit to Miller Brewery

After getting into Milwaukee Wednesday morning, Combs hung out at the Brewers stadium for a couple of hours, worked out, then was off to the Miller Brewery.

How long has Combs been a fan of Miller Lite? "Forever, probably."

"My dad's been drinking it for a long time," Combs said. "It was always around the house."

If his music career never worked out, he said, he would still be sporting a Columbia fishing shirt and drinking a Miller Lite somewhere in the world.

"That's what I would be doing anyways," he said. "So, I really wanted to go after things that I was already passionate about that felt natural and authentic to me. So, I'm very thankful for (Molson Coors) being receptive to have me on board. I feel super lucky."

Sporting a Brewers Barrelman hat, Combs and his team walked into a conference room on the brewery's complex Wednesday. He was met by a small group of longtime brewery employees and other Molson Coors staffers. The beer cases and cans with his new specialty packaging were displayed on tables.

The design features a ribbon that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart" wrapped in between the tuning pegs of a guitar. Combs' name is at the top of the headstock.

After everyone went around the room introducing themselves, they were instructed to suit up in PPE — yellow safety vests, glasses, hard hats, toe caps and headsets.

On Combs' VIP tour of the brewery, he got a first-hand — and at times, hands-on — look at the operations with facts and history lessons along the way.

The first stop was a packaging plant, where Combs met machinist Jeff Malecki who has "But they ain't seen us together" from Combs' song "Forever After All" tattooed across his arm.

The two shook hands and got a picture together. That would become a reoccurring scene throughout Combs' visit.

It seemed like every employee who crossed paths with Combs received a handshake. And, if they wanted a photo or autograph, they got those, too, without any hesitation.

In the warehouse, Combs saw cases with the specialty packaging sliding out of a machine — he pulled his phone out to document that — and stacks of those cases getting carried off on a pallet via forklift.

At one point, Combs stood in front of what looked like a mountain of the cases. "Get this one," he said to a photographer as he hugged the cases as far as his arms would stretch.

Later, he'd get to snag one of the cans right off of a quick-moving line.

He got a taste of that and a few different brewery roles, including one that involved flipping a cardboard box filled with unconstructed cases into place. A few cases snuck out the back, but not too shabby for a first-timer.

"Thanks for letting me do that," Combs said to the workers as he shook their hands. "Thanks for letting me be in the way."

Combs also tried his hand at adding hops, one of which was liquid. "Have y'all seen 'Superbad'?" Combs asked with a bucket of hops in hand.

It reminded him of the scene when McLovin was trying to buy booze at a liquor store and said to the cashier: "You know, I heard they recently decided to add more hops to it."

Toward the conclusion of the tour, Combs said he had a "truly amazing" time. But, his favorite part had to be the grand finale.

He got to go up on a brewhouse rooftop with striking views of the city, the home of the Brewers and that big red Miller sign.

Up there is where he shotgunned a beer in under 5 seconds, and had the honor of sampling an exclusive maturation stock that not many get to try.

"To be standing up here is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Combs said.

How about those eight ACM Awards nominations

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this week. Combs leads the nominations with eight , including entertainer of the year, male artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year, single of the year and music event of the year.

"It's really awesome," he said. "Always surprising, I think ... In a lot of ways, it feels like I've been doing this a lifetime. And, in a lot of ways, I feel like I've been doing it for six months. So, I feel like sometimes I'm so conflicted with knowing what to feel or think ... It's an honor. It's my wildest dreams coming true. So, I'm a very lucky guy every day."

A 2024 win via Combs nomination for entertainer of the year would clinch the coveted triple crown award, which consists of an entertainer of the year win plus wins in an act's respective new artist (male, female, duo, or group) and artist (male, female, duo or group) categories, a USA TODAY report said.

The event will air on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on May 16.

Luke Combs crushes 2024 stadium concert tour kickoff at Milwaukee's American Family Field

Luke Combs took to the stage in Milwaukee Friday like a bear roaring out of hibernation.

"First show back in five months — here we go," the country superstar cheered after the third song for the kickoff of his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old Tour" at American Family Field. The tour's second show, for the only the second time in the city's stadium concert history, includes another night at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark Saturday.

Combs clearly relished being back in tour mode, roaming all over the stage and runways, crooning and belting until his face turned heirloom-tomato red for show starters "Must've Never Met You," "She Got the Best of Me" and "Lovin' On You" — the latter two among 13 No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay chart-toppers that made Friday's 27-song setlist.

But I'd wager there were a whole lot of Combs fans in Milwaukee Friday who were more excited for this show than he was.

The full-volume singalongs were Exhibit A in that argument, but some historical context is important.

Milwaukee is spoiled by the sheer volume of country A-listers who routinely come to town (Dan + Shay were here last week, and Tim McGraw is going to be here next week). Combs, too, came through early in his career for three shows at the Rave and the late Northern Lights Theater; he also opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made a Farm Aid appearance at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

But that's it. As his trophy case filled up, as the hits kept coming, as he moved on up to stadium headliner status, Combs — very much still at the top of the A-list with a leading eight ACM Award nominations announced this week — had yet to do a major Milwaukee headlining show.

Until this weekend, when he rewarded Milwaukee fans' patience with an impassioned, hits-loaded show and a couple of custom nods to the city — from the blue Brewers ballcap that served as the signature piece of his humble concert ensemble to the lyrical swaps of "Milwaukee" into a handful of songs. That didn't quite work as a sub for Panama as he sang about deep sea fishing for "When It Rains It Pours" Friday — but the cheering crowd made it clear the gesture was appreciated.

And the Milwaukee fans adored the beer-centric portion of Friday's program. Fans got to vote for one of three songs via text to make the setlist Friday, and "Beer Can" beat out "Don't Tempt Me" and "Memories Are Made Of." He paid his respects to hometown favorite Miller Brewing — possibly displeasing any American Family Insurance execs in the crowd when he suggested he still thought of the Milwaukee Brewers stadium as Miller Park — and shotgunned a can of Miller Lite during "1, 2 Many."

And of all the big hits Combs played Friday night, "Beer Never Broke My Heart" had one of the most heartfelt singalongs.

That, and his cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." The biggest hit of his career, Combs' take is pretty straightforward, letting Chapman's beautiful lyrics and melodies lead the way. But there's still clearly something special about his version, isn't there?

It's the same thing, Friday's show indicated, that has made Combs' such a superstar.

As a songwriter, as a storyteller, he's as polished as any of his peers in heavy rotation on country radio. But there's more soul and vulnerability in his voice, with just a touch of grit, than most of his centrist country star contemporaries.

So Combs, a back-to-back CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year recipient, was as expected a likable, stadium-electrifying party host.

But his ability to make the stadium filled with 41,000 to 44,000 feel small, to make songs feel personal in that space, that was his greatest strength Friday — whether he was crooning "This One's for You" alone on electric guitar while his seven-piece band took a breather, or tenderly belting "Better Together" accompanied by pretty melodies on a piano.

But the most intimate and moving stretch of the night included "Love You Anyway," "Forever After All" and "Beautiful Crazy," which Combs said were inspired by his wife Nicole Hocking, who was in attendance Friday. Combs prefaced the song singing her praises, including how she helped him with his daily anxieties — and expressed remorse for missing the birth of their second son last year while he was on tour in Australia. Calling it the best and worst day of his life, Combs choked up, took a beat, and wiped tears from his eyes. And then he poured all the emotion, all the gratitude that he felt in that highly vulnerable moment into those songs.

As the show hit the hour-and-50-minute mark Friday, and Combs more than earned the right to head backstage for some family time, he struggled to peel himself away from the stage.

Nine minutes after Combs sang the final lyrics of the night's final song, "The Kind of Love We Make," the seats across the stadium were largely empty. But the pit was still full of fans, and Combs was still on that stage, signing autograph after autograph after autograph.

Cody Jinks, Charles Wesley Godwin and the Wilder Blue opened Friday night's Luke Combs concert

Cody Jinks was a standout at the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival in Veterans Park last summer , fueled by a hellbent desire to win over the crowd as the event’s lone country act. As the primary opener Friday at a big ol' country show, that kind of pressure was off. And, consequently, Jinks’ fire didn’t burn as brightly, despite solid renditions of tunes like “Fast Hand” and “Mamma Song” aided by a honky-tonk-tuned band.

Immediately winning points with a customized Brew Crew jersey, singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin turned out to be the most animated of Friday's openers, storming the catwalk and banging his head for “Hardwood Floors.” But even in “stadium mode,” Godwin brought intimacy and tenderness to tearjerkers like “Miner Imperfections,” which he dedicated to his father. Godwin may not be at the level of his good friend Zach Bryan yet ( who he opened for at Summerfest last year ), with stadiums full of people mesmerized by every word, but Friday’s set suggested it could be in the cards. Next up for Godwin in Milwaukee: a headlining set at Summerfest’s Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard June 28, which could prove to be too small a stage for his fanbase.

Alt-country act the Wilder Blue started off the night with a gentle but effective rendition of the national anthem, then kept things mellow for Eagles cover “Seven Bridges Road” and “I’m Your Man,” a new single out Friday that, played live, was more blue-cool than red-hot swagger. The polite but understandably sleepy crowd would have to wait for something, well, wilder.

6 takeaways from Luke Combs' Milwaukee concert Friday

• At the risk of ruining this for everyone catching a concert at American Family Field in the future (including myself): I once again followed Journal Sentinel reporter Claire Reid's traffic-avoiding tips and drove into the stadium lots from Blue Mound Road. I first hit the brakes at 5:28 p.m., and I was parked by 5:41 p.m. The Journal Sentinel splurged on premium parking this time out, so that cut down on my parking time, but I still was shocked at how quickly I got in. But getting out, there's really nothing drivers can do to avoid that headache. People started filing out in large numbers around 10:50 p.m., but the drive out of the lots around me didn't really clear up until about 12:10 a.m.
• A friend texted me a photo from his seats at Friday's show — with a massive, suspended speaker stack blocking a good portion of the stage, even though his tickets weren't classified as "obstructed view." He debated with customer service to no avail and embraced a positive attitude, and I gathered he was still able to see Combs on the screens clearly and when he'd walk the stage. But given the complications getting to the show and the cost, it's too bad my friend and others seated near him had to deal with that.
• Beyond "Fast Car," there were other covers Friday, including a stirring take of Ed Sheeran's "Dive," a rendition of Brooks & Dunn's "Brand New Man," and a medley of three songs with a few of Combs' bandmates taking lead vocals: Shania Twain's "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?," Train's "Drops of Jupiter" and Dierks Bentley's "What Was I Thinkin'?"
• Combs covered a whole lot of hits, but not every one of his Billboard Country Airplay chart-toppers made the setlist. Left out Friday: "Even Though I'm Leaving," "Does to Me" and "Doin' This." But it was worth cutting one of those to make sure he added unreleased fatherly love song "The Man He Sees in Me" Friday.
• A head's up: Combs’ openers Friday won’t be the same openers Saturday. Expect a more country radio vibe with (in order of appearance) Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis. And if you get to the lots by 3 p.m., you can see two more acts — Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham — at the Third Base Plaza at American Family Field.
• Most interesting conversation from the pit: A woman near the stage yelled at a security guard, “Next time I have to pee you’re coming with. That was (expletive) brutal coming back in here.” Understandably, the security guard looked horrified.
