Tours depart from Navy Pier daily from May through September at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. Note that the 1 p.m. sail is all about the history of piracy in the area. Tall Ship Windy also offers nighttime cruises on select days to correspond with Navy Pier's seasonal Fireworks at the Pier show.

Reviewers rave about the tour, saying that the views are superb and the speedboat makes for a thrilling ride.

The tour, which operates from March through October or early November, departs hourly every day starting as early as 11 a.m.; exact departure times vary by day. Visitors love the tour for the views and history lesson, though some complain it was difficult to hear the narration from the back of the boat. Chicago Boat Tours Compared

boat tour chicago price

This post compares the best discounts on Chicago boat tours and cruises, including architecture cruises, sightseeing tours, speedboats, sailboats, kayaks, and water taxis.

  • Architecture Cruises
  • Sightseeing Cruises
  • Water Taxis
  • Lunch and Dinner Cruises
  • Sailboat and Kayak Tours

There are a lot of different river cruises and tours available in the city of Chicago, and this post provides links to the discounts available for each tour in the sections listed below.

There are several different types of discounts available which can help you save money in a variety of ways.

One of the most popular options is to purchase a tourist pass .

These services charge one flat price for access to dozens of popular attractions and activities, and they typically include at least a few cruises or boat tours.

Another option is to check popular discount sites like Groupon and LivingSocial to see if they are offering any deals on cruises or boat tours.

The advantage of these sites is they usually offer additional coupon codes to save even more money!

One of the most common discounts is group rates, and these special prices are only offered to people who are buying 20-40 tickets or more at once.

Some companies also offer discounts for seniors and military members, and there is at least one company that provides coupon codes.

If that’s not enough, there are a few companies that also offer free drinks!

In addition to covering prices and discounts, we'll also include details about which Chicago river cruise is best suited for each traveler.

While on a Chicago boat tour, you can expect excellent views and incredible city panoramas of the following attractions and well-known structures:

  • Goose Island
  • Trump Tower
  • Tribune Tower
  • Wrigley Building
  • Chicago Riverwalk

CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE TOUR DISCOUNTS

SIGHTSEEING CRUISE DISCOUNTS

These services are all about discovering Chicago and learning about its history. Anyone looking for excellent photo ops will want to consider one of these river cruises.

Shoreline Sightseeing Cruises Chicago

Most of these boat tours offer some kind of narration describing the significant landmarks in the areas you will visit.

There are a total of 5 different discounts available on the following Chicago boat tours:

  • Free for Kids
  • Coupon Code

The best opportunity to save is probably to purchase a tourist pass , but you might be able to get a comparable deal using a discount site.

NOTE: This section features the most popular tour companies, but there might be a few we miss which are sold at a discount through websites like Groupon and LivingSocial .

If you can't find exactly what you want, we recommend checking these discount sites to find a service that fits your expectations.

SHORELINE SIGHTSEEING CLASSIC LAKE TOUR

Shoreline has been offering tours since 1939, and their experience shows.

We highly recommend this guided, historic sightseeing tour on Lake Michigan.

Lake Cruise Shoreline Sightseeing Chicago

You can bet that your guide will have more than a few jokes as they describe Chicago history through the current landmarks along the waterfront.

Duration: 40 minutes

  • $34.93 - Adults
  • $13.36 - Children (3-12)
  • Learn more or purchase tickets here .

Classic Lake Michigan Tours depart from West Dock Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave, across from McDonald’s ( map ).

  • Free with the purchase of the Go City Chicago Pass .
  • Special group rates are available for 20 or more visitors.
  • Save 10% - 20% or more with Groupon / LivingSocial .

KAYAK CHICAGO

Take a guided tour of Lake Michigan while paddling your own single or tandem kayak!

Perfect for beginners, this leisurely experience offers top-quality tours that Yelp users applaud for customer service and easily accommodating last-minute walk-ups.

Kayak Chicago River

They even allow dogs! This tour includes an orientation to paddling.

Duration: 2.5 hours

  • $85 per person
  • More information or purchase tickets .

This company doesn't offer a lot of discounts, but they do have coupon codes every now and then, so we recommend checking their site to see whether or not there are even more deals available.

  • Check Groupon / LivingSocial for potential additional discounts.

SPEED BOAT TOUR DISCOUNTS

Anyone looking for fun and excitement on the Chicago River will want to consider a Speed Boat cruise.

These trips are more like a roller coaster ride than they are a boat tour.

As you ride through Chi-town at top speeds, you’ll see some of the most important landmarks in the city.

Guides will usually point out significant sights as you enjoy a thrilling experience.

There are only 3 ways to save money on these Chicago boat tours as of right now:

  • Kids are Free
  • Dog Discount

While the last option is definitely the strangest discount of them all, group rates are probably the best way to save money on these speed boat tours.

NOTE: You'll find the most popular speedboat companies below, there might be some we are missing which are sold at a discount through websites like Groupon and LivingSocial .

We recommend checking these discount sites if you can't find a service that fits your needs and expectations.

SEADOG’S LAKEFRONT SPEEDBOAT TOUR

If you’re looking to have some moderate thrills as you do your sightseeing, and you don’t mind the wind in your hair, we recommend Seadog.

Race through the water as you hear about the Windy City’s most famous landmarks along the shoreline during their lakefront architectural tour.

Light and humorous, reviewers have a hard time knowing if they like the speed or the speeches more!

Beware: We see a pattern in the reviews of guests who are unhappy with the will-call ticket option due to long lines.

We recommend buying E-tickets in advance, which saves you from the long line and can help ensure you get a great seat by showing up about 20 minutes in advance.

Duration: 30 Minutes

Price (includes tax):

  • $41.59 - Adults
  • $29.69 - Children
  • More details or buy a ticket .

Depart from South Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave. ( map ). Look for the red & white ticket booth just across from the Ferris Wheel.

The deals provided by this company are a bit different from what you'll find with other services, but at least you'll be able to save some money.

  • 15% off tickets if you bring your dog for the boat ride.
  • Special group rates are offered for Skydeck Chicago.

CHICAGO WATER TAXI

If you don’t care about narration or tour guides, a water taxi might be the most affordable option on this list.

This outing is more about transporting you from one location to the next, but you can typically enjoy a lot of wonderful views while on the boat.

Chicago Water Taxi

There are only 3 different discount opportunities currently available on Chicago water taxis:

  • Senior Discount
  • Military Discount
  • Disability Discount

If you fit any of these categories, you’ll be able to save at least 50% on tickets. However, military members undoubtedly get the best deal, as they ride for free!

NOTE: We will list the most popular water taxi companies below, but there may be a few available through websites like Groupon and LivingSocial .

If you can't find exactly what you want, we recommend checking these discount sites to find a service that better fits your needs.

THE CHICAGO WATER TAXI

For a fast and cheap experience on the river, hopping on a water taxi can be a convenient way to travel for local commuters and travelers.

Many of Chicago’s popular attractions can be seen along these routes, and each of the station stops offer fantastic things to do, see, and eat.

NOTE: Due to the pandemic, Chicago Water Taxi is currently only available on Saturdays and Sundays. Cash is no longer accepted and you must purchase tickets with a debit or credit card.

While there are no guides on these boats, the sights are comparable to the ones on any of the sightseeing cruises listed above, and at a huge discount!

Duration: 15 to 30 minutes

Price Options:

  • Single ride $6
  • All Day Pass $10
  • 31 Day Pass $80

Another affordable taxiing service is Shoreline, which offers a route on the lake as well as the river.

We like this service for their unique lake route, which is the cheapest way to view the skyline while on Lake Michigan; notably the Museum campuses.

Duration: 15-40 minutes, depending on the chosen route.

  • May through September
  • Taxis operate 10 am-6 pm, at least every 20 minutes

Price Options and Packages:

There are no reservations for Shoreline taxis, as they are a commuter service. Tickets can be bought on-site.

NIGHT BOAT TOURS AND FIREWORK CRUISE DISCOUNTS

Like most metropolitan cities, Chicago looks entirely different after dark.

Several companies offer services at night, allowing you to get a good look at the lights from the city while you’re drifting down the river.

Some of these opportunities are only offered during the summer months, but they often include fireworks.

There are currently 3 different discounts available for the following Chicago night boat tours:

If you’re looking for the best opportunity to save money on a night boat tour or cruise, discount sites will likely provide your best chance at a good deal.

Major discount sites tend to feature all the latest fireworks and holiday cruises.

Depending on whether or not they have additional coupon codes, you could end up saving even more than you would with group rates.

NOTE: Although you'll find the most popular companies listed below, there might be a few we miss which are sold at a discount through websites like Groupon and LivingSocial .

If you can't find what you're looking for, consider checking these discount sites to find a service that fits your needs.

SHORELINE LAKE FIREWORK TOUR

Enjoy impressive views of Chicago’s skyline from Lake Michigan, with an uninterrupted view of the weekly fireworks display.

Tour-goers love to watch the reflection of the lights on the water, as well as the buildings!

Reviewers say to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the tour’s start time, and this is well worth the money!

For a few extra dollars, many reviewers recommend taking Shoreline’s nighttime architecture fireworks tour (see below) which includes a guided view of the river.

Seasonal, May-September only.

  • Saturdays 9:30 pm
  • Wednesdays 9:00 pm

Duration: 60 minutes

  • $40.95 - Adult
  • $24.15 - Child (3-12)
  • Infant FREE
  • View the schedule or purchase tickets here .

Departs from Navy Pier West Dock, 600 E Grand Ave ( map )

As with their other services, the following deals are also available for their night/firework cruises.

SHORELINE ARCHITECTURE FIREWORK TOUR

Get all of the information on a daytime architecture tour, with an added grand finale: seeing fireworks on the lake!

No matter where you make your departures, you’ll tour the main and south branches of the Chicago River before traveling out onto the Great Lake for the best view of the weekly fireworks display.

Pro tip : Don’t forget your camera! Even though it is nighttime, the lights of the city offer perfect photo opportunities. You’ll have your postcard-worthy photo in no time!

Seasonal, May-September only.

  • Saturdays 9:00 pm
  • Wednesdays 8:15 pm
  • $46.20-$49.99 - Adult
  • $26.25-$28 - Child (3-12)

Depart from one of two locations:

  • Navy Pier Entrance, Polk Bros Park. GPS: 600 E Grand Ave
  • Michigan Avenue Bridge (NE corner). GPS: 401 Michigan Ave

WENDELLA SUNSET CRUISE

In addition to their architectural boat tours, this company also offers an outing at sunset which allows you to enjoy excellent views of the city skyline.

This is intended to be a romantic cruise, so there won't be a lot of historic details about the city provided, but you will have the opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine, a cocktail, or a cold beer.

Since this is a sunset tour, you might not get to see Chicago after dark, but depending on the time of year, it's definitely a possibility.

TIP: It's worth noting that this company offers specialty fireworks and holiday cruises to celebrate important events.

If you're visiting during the 4th of July or Christmas, check to see what holiday cruises they are currently offering .

Wendella sends a uniformed employee to meet their guests at the Michigan Avenue Bridge. When you present your ticket, they will guide you to the correct dock.

The same discounts they offer for their architectural cruises are also valid for their sunset cruises!

WINDY CITY SAILING

Windy City Sailing has led private yacht tours for 18 years, and recently added fireworks and special event packages.

Pro tip: Once the yacht is out of the harbor, ask for a chance to drive!

Duration: Flexible, minimum of 3 hours

$275 - $300 per hour| Hourly Rates

  • The Nebula, a 40-foot sloop-rig Beneteau sailboat

This has offered their services through discount sites in the past. These websites sometimes offer discounts on local activities.

  • Check Groupon / LivingSocial to save 10% - 20% or more.

CHICAGO SAILBOAT CHARTERS  (NIGHTTIME OR FIREWORKS)

Want to try something different with friends, or surprise your significant other? Why not charter a sailboat and watch the fireworks on the lake!

Pack a picnic basket full of romantic food (BYoB) and watch the skyline light up. Don’t forget your camera!

Pro tip: While it might be tempting to wear flip-flops, for comfort and safety consider wearing non-slip shoes.

Fireworks: Wednesday and Saturday evenings, May through September.

$599 and up | Hourly Rates based on vessel size and number of passengers:

  • Large (36’, up to 8 passengers)
  • Luxury (39’, up to 11 passengers)
  • Power Boat (40', up to 11 passengers)
  • BIG Boat (up to 36 passengers)
  • Call 773-236-7245 for booking questions and special events.

Location: 400 W Belmont Harbor Dr

This company changes its deals quite frequently, so we recommend checking its website to see what is currently available.

LUNCH AND DINNER CRUISE DISCOUNTS

In addition to the various night tours offered on Lake Michigan, you’ll also find a nice selection of dinner cruise options as well.

Instead of focusing on the excitement of a fireworks show, this boat trip is all about enjoying a meal while you drift alongside the city and experience the skyline in style.

There are a total of 3 different ways to save money on these services in Chicago:

Although the discounts available for these services aren’t always big, even 10% - 20% off an excursion that costs $100 on average is going to be a pretty good deal.

It’s also worth noting that the free drink offer from each company is likely one of the easiest discounts to enjoy.

NOTE: This section lists the most popular dinner cruise companies, but there might be a few we miss which are sold through websites like Groupon and LivingSocial .

If you can't find exactly what you need here, we recommend checking these discount sites to find a service that fits your expectations.

Odyssey Cruises

This is one of the most popular cruise companies in the United States. Their Chicago branch offers lunch, brunch, and dinner cruises.

The earlier the trip, the less you will pay for a ticket.

Most of their excursions include a three-course plated meal and wonderful music curated by an onboard DJ.

In comparison to their competition, this is definitely one of the more classy experiences you’ll have on Lake Michigan. Odyssey offers service pretty much year-round.

As one of the premiere cruise services in the Windy City, it shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise that they have earned a 4-star rating on TripAdvisor.

Although there are a few negative reviews, most customers were more than pleased with their trip.

Unhappy customers typically complained of uncommon issues that don’t represent the typical experience with Odyssey Cruises.

A majority of reviews came from passengers who were very impressed with the quality of their ship and the views at night in Chicago.

This dinner cruise is very popular with couples.

There are a few different deals available when you choose this company, including opportunities to save on other popular activities.

  • Members of the Military will receive special rates w/ ID.
  • Get discounted group rates at Skydeck Chicago.
  • Receive 1 complimentary premium drink when you check in on Yelp .

Lunch Service

  • Ticket Price: $81.90 for Adults | $60.03 for Children
  • Duration: 2 hours

Brunch Service

  • Ticket Price: $117.44 for Adults | $92.83 for Children

Dinner Service

  • Ticket Price: $154.70 for Adults | $154.70 for Children
  • Duration: 3 hours

Schedule and more information

Spirit Cruises

Although this line is owned and operated by the same company as Odyssey, they actually offer a somewhat different experience.

Instead of a three-course plated meal, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a nice buffet while drifting along Lake Michigan.

In addition, they also provide entertainment in the form of DJ music and interactive games.

Unlike their classy counterpart, this service is all about having fun with friends and family.

Spirit offers lunch, brunch, and dinner cruises fairly often. Ticket prices are typically more affordable for these excursions.

Despite the differences between Odyssey and Spirit Cruises, this company has also received a 4-star rating on TripAdvisor.

There aren’t many negative reviews to speak of, but it’s worth noting that some passengers were unhappy with either the food or the customer service.

Thankfully, these comments do not represent the typical experience with their cruises.

An overwhelming majority of reviewers were very pleased with their trip, stating that the meal and entertainment they received were both excellent.

Much like the other dinner cruise companies on our list, this company also offers a variety of deals.

  • Military w/ ID will receive special rates.
  • Discounted group rates at Skydeck Chicago.
  • Get 1 complimentary premium drink by checking in on Yelp .
  • Ticket Price: $68.77 for Adults | $52.37 for Children
  • Ticket Price: $101.04 for Adults | $81.90 for Children
  • Ticket Price: $125.63 - $125.63 per person
  • Duration: 2 ½ – 3 hours

CHICAGO SAILBOAT AND KAYAK TOURS

When it comes to rest and relaxation, few boat tours are going to be as inviting as a sailboat. What better place to sail than the Windy City?

Enjoy the sights and sounds as you drift around the Chicago River in comfort.

There are 4 types of discounts available on these services in the Chicago area:

Without question, you’ll get the best possible deal on this service by using a tourist pass . That said, you may also find a similarly excellent deal on a discount site.

NOTE: This section will list the best sailboat companies below, but there may be a few which are sold at a discount through websites like Groupon and LivingSocial .

If you can't find what you want here, we recommend checking these discount sites to find a service that fits your expectations.

TALL SHIP WINDY

A Review of Wendella’s Architecture Boat Tour in Chicago

Lauren

Are you thinking about taking an architecture boat tour in Chicago?

If you ask anyone what to do when visiting Chicago, an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River is always highly recommended.

A boat tour is an easy way to see a large chunk of Chicago in a short amount of time. Plus, you get the added bonus of learning about Chicago’s history, like the Great Fire and the World’s Fair, and how it impacted Chicago’s landscape and skyline.

We took a boat tour with Wendella when we visited Chicago. We enjoyed the guide’s humor and her extensive knowledge about the city, buildings, and architects.

You have many options when it comes to Chicago River boat tours. However, we love that Wendella offers both 45 and 90-minute tours. And they are the only boat tour company that is open year-round!

The review below shares more about what to expect on a Chicago architecture tour with Wendella. Let’s dive in!

What to Expect on a Chicago River Tour

A Chicago architecture boat tour is one of the best ways to learn about the city’s history while also seeing a large chunk of the city in a short amount of time. It’s a great option if you only have one day in Chicago . But we think it’s worth doing no matter how much time you spend in the Windy City!

On a Wendella boat tour , the guides narrate the tour, sharing funny jokes and interesting stories about famous landmarks like the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Tribune Tower , and the Wrigley Building .

The tour offers a fascinating look into the city’s evolution, from the Great Fire of 1871 that spurred innovative architectural rebirth to the groundbreaking designs that define Chicago’s skyline today.

Tour Options

Wendella offers several different tour options to suit your time constraints and interests.

Their  45-minute Chicago River Architecture Tour  provides a short yet comprehensive tour of the city’s skyline. It shares interesting facts about the various buildings along the Chicago River (and others nearby) while sharing information about the city’s history, including the World’s Fair and the Great Fire.

Wendella also offers two 90-minute tours.  The 90-minute   Chicago River Architecture Tour  is a more extended version of the 45-minute tour, giving guests a more comprehensive tour that navigates all three branches of the Chicago River. This is the most popular tour for good reason.

Wendella’s Lake and River Architecture Tour   is their original tour offering. It not only takes you on the Chicago River but also Lake Michigan. You’ll get to enjoy and learn about Chicago’s skyline as seen from the Chicago River. Then, you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and float out onto Lake Michigan for the best view of the city.

Prices for the Wendella Chicago Boat Tour

How much a Wendella architectural boat tour costs depends on the tour you take. These are the prices as of publication:

  • The  45-minute archi t ecture tour  costs $12 for kids ages 4-12 and $27 for anyone 13 and up. Children under 4 are FREE but still require a ticket.
  • Both  90-minute tours  cost $19 for kids ages 4-12 and $42 for anyone over 12. Children ages three and under are FREE, but still, you need to reserve them a ticket.

Amenities on Board a Wendella Boat Tour

Plenty of amenities are   available to you during your architectural river tour on Wendella.

Let’s get the most critical amenity out of the way first. Yes, there are  restrooms on board ! So, if you’re visiting Chicago with kids, you don’t have to worry about them needing to use the bathroom right after the boat leaves the dock.

people sitting on the top deck of the Wendella Boat Tours Chicago Architecture tour

If you get hungry or thirsty on board, there is a  full-service bar  serving soda, wine, local beer, and cocktails. They also have some  snacks  available for purchase.

Lastly, although we recommend sitting on the top deck for the best views of the city, the below deck is climate-controlled. So, if you’re visiting Chicago on a hot day or during the winter, you’ll be plenty comfortable on board.

Wendella Chicago River Tour Experience

You’ll have fun on a Wendella boat tour! Most people agree that the Wendella architecture tour is a  more relaxed experience  compared to other Chicago boat tours. The guides tell corny jokes (almost on par with the Jungle Cruise at Disney) while sharing exciting history and tidbits about the architecture in Chicago.

The  45-mi nute tour  will take you along the Chicago River, first heading west and south before turning around. You’ll get views of the buildings in the Loop, West Loop, and River North neighborhoods, as well as the Navy Pier.

View of Chicago skyline from the Wendella Boat tour near the Navy Pier

Wendella’s  90-minute architecture tour  follows a similar route as the 45-minute, except it heads further south on the Chicago River and explores some of the north branch.

If you opt for the  90-minute Lake and River tour , you’ll experience a shorter tour on the Chicago River, but then you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and enjoy the view of the skyline from the massive Lake Michigan.

This  map  on Wendella’s website gives you an idea of where you’ll be along the river and lake.

The boat tour on the Chicago River was very  smooth . No big waves to cause rocking of the boat. Of course, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to take medication or wear a patch prior to boarding. We did not do the Lake and River tour, but it is probably rougher out on Lake Michigan than the river.

Fun Fact: There are almost two dozen bridges that cross the Chicago River in the downtown area, alone. You’ll go under several of them while you’re on your architectural boat tour!

Tips for Your Wendella Boat Ride

  • Arrive early:  They ask you to arrive 15-30 minutes before the tour to allow time to board. We arrived precisely 30 minutes before the tour started, and people were already in line. If you want a seat on the top deck, get there early.
  • Sit near a speaker or close to the guide:  The guides share so many interesting facts and silly jokes you don’t want to miss them because you can’t hear them. They use a microphone, but with the sounds of the city, the wind, and other passing boats, it can be hard to hear everything.
  • Dress warmer:  Unless it’s the middle of summer, you’ll probably be a little colder on the boat than you are walking around the city. Between the water and the breeze from the boat, it makes you feel colder, so bring a jacket in the fall and spring, and don’t forget a hat and scarf in the colder months.

7 things that might surprise you about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour

T here are plenty of ways to take in the sights, sounds (and smells) of Chicago, but you don't necessarily have to be on land to do that.

And you don't have to be a tourist, either.

In fact, one of the most beloved ways — among locals and visitors alike — to experience city is by journeying across the Chicago River and Lake Michigan while a tour guide talks about buildings and regales you on the untold story of Mrs. O'Leary's cow.

In other words: a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

"As you're going up and down the Chicago River and on Lake Michigan, you're seeing the city’s evolving architecture, which is changing every year" said Andrew Sargis, director of sales and marketing for Wendella Tours and Cruises .

Wendella, billed as Chicago's "original" architecture tour, in 1935 gave its first architecture tour of the city from a wooden diesel yacht out on Navy Pier, Sargis said. Now, upwards of 20 architecture tours are offered daily, with more on the weekends. On average, Wendella tours see roughly 100,000 passengers each month over the summer, Sargis said.

And though the majority of guests on any given Wendella architecture tour are tourists, Sargis said, locals take them, too.

MORE: Even Chicagoans can't get enough of this tourist attraction: ‘It's about the only touristy thing I do'

"I was surprised when I first started, we get a lot of repeat locals," Bobby Scheffle, a Wendella tour guide told NBC Chicago. "And always there's a lot of local people that come on when they have guests visiting them in town. They like to show off the city this way."

But there's something else about the experience that makes it so very Chicago.

"I think it is really unique to experience the city from a boat on a river, because we think about other big cities in the United States -- there aren't many that have a river that go right through downtown," Scheffle said. "You feel like you're in the city, you hear the noise, and you see the buildings and all that."

Whether you're taking the ride for the first time or the 50th, bringing out-of-town guests out for a memorable activity or just itching to be a tourist in your own city, here are seven things to know about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

Will weather stop a tour from running?

Wendella's architecture tours run year-round, Sargis said, although "weather is a factor."

Weather events like ice on the river or significant snowfall can impact operations, Sargis said, but they typically don't, since the Chicago River -- a federal waterway -- must remain navigable year-round.

While Wendella's boats do have climate-controlled indoor lounges, tours during the winter may run at limited times. But rain, snow, extreme heat or wind, unflappable Chicagoans still show up.

"We went on drizzly day a few years ago," Kathy Rambo wrote on NBC Chicago's Facebook page. "There were only about 10 of us on the boat!

And most often, the tour will run — rain or shine — so don't hesitate to bring a raincoat.

"I have certainly [given tours] under thunderstorms and downpours, and I've gotten drenched sometimes," Scheffle said. "I've never had a tour get canceled because no one bought a ticket. There's always someone wanting to come out here in the rain or the cold."

What's the best time of year (or day) to go?

It depends on when exactly your favorite time of the year is, and what you're hoping to see.

For Sargis, it's late summer. "There's this point of time in September when the weather is beautiful, but there's not that summer rush."

There are other times that Chicagoans may want to consider, too.

"St. Patrick's Day Celebration when they dye the river, and any Wednesday or Saturday night [over the summer], watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan , especially if you're local" Sargis said.

During the summer months, Wendella's tours run start as early as 9 a.m., with the day's final tour not ending until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., Scheffle said, "so if you want to come for a ride to see the city lights, you can come late, and it's also beautiful, just a little more difficult to see the colors on the buildings if that's what you want to see."

Laura Pubins, who lives in a suburb outside of Chicago, agrees.

"My favorite one was when we were on a boat at sunset," Pubins wrote to NBC Chicago on Facebook. "It was an awesome new view of the city."

What's the most photogenic spot on the tour?

For Sargis, it's "anything out on Lake Michigan," with the skyline in the background.

On the river though, there's one moment that captures the city best, Scheffle said, no matter what time of day you're taking the trip.

"The best place to take a photo on the 90-minute river tour is when we come up the south branch from Chinatown," Scheffle said. "That's the best place because you get the whole skyline from the south. It's really beautiful."

For locals though, it may not be what you're looking at, so much as how you're looking at it.

"You're looking at [the city] from underneath," said Chicago resident Nick Pappas, 55, who recently found himself on a 90-minute river tour. "It's just a different perspective on the river that you don't get on the street level. As amazing as that sounds, you're only, like, 20 feet down, but it gives you a whole different perspective."

What does the training for a tour guide look like?

According to Sargis, all Wendella tour guides are trained in-house -- and the spots are competitive.

"There's high demand," Sargis said, of the position. "There are more people that want to be tour guides than space available. It's certainly a popular job, and people want to do it." While the tour guide of any given architecture tour isn't made public, many people do request certain ones for private events, Sargis said.

For the tours, there's a general script, with highlights that must be mentioned, Sargis said. But improvisation, along with sharing personal history is encouraged, too.

"All of the tour guides have their own experience in the city, and will add parts of their history in it," Sargis said. "We have a tour guide that is a retired police officer, and he will interject anecdotes form his career. We have a tour guide that's a Vietnam War Veteran, and when we go by the Vietnam War Memorial, he will always discuss the importance of it to him."

For Scheffle, the training included joining multiple tours a week for two weeks and flashcards.

"For a while, I, just drove Uber and Lyft," Scheffle said. "And then, I remembered that I really liked Chicago. I like learning fun facts about it. And there are people in the city that have that as a job -- to tell people fun facts about Chicago and I started looking into tourism jobs in the city."

What's the most common question tour guides get?

Believe it or not, it's not always about The Great Chicago Fire , or Mrs. O'Leary and her cow, at least on Scheffle's tours.

"My favorite thing on the tour that happens is probably when little kids ask questions," Scheffle said. "The common question that a kid will ask, because I talk about the tallest building, second tallest building, third tallest building, a lot of times a kid will ask what's the shortest building in Chicago? Which I don't have a good answer for."

Are you supposed to tip your guide?

"It's up to the discretion of the client," Sargis said. "I would say a lot of our passengers do tip our tour guides."

What's the absolute best part of the tour?

Sure the tour is photogenic, and the city's history is fascinating. And though some may go on the tour to find out what buildings are new, others prefer to think about the old.

"My favorite building to talk about is probably the Board of Trade building," Scheffle said. "Just because I remember walking by it much younger and always, I remember, really being impressed by it, thinking was such a cool big city building."

For a local on the tour, the memories are nice. But a day out on the water in Chicago is just hard to beat.

"It's great. I don't have to work," said Pappas, who has lived in the city for 55 years. "Every time, it's a little treat to go down the river."
