Famous Lorelei Rock

The most famous of all Rhine legends has its origin at the only 130-metre wide narrow part of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen. Steep cliffs leave no room for the current here and many ship accidents nourished the fairy tale of the fair blonde who, high up on the rock, confused the boatmen's senses. Many myths entwine themselves around this place. In the 19th century Clemens Brentano transferred the name of the rock, which pushes far into the river bed, to the enchanting blonde woman. Pure Rhine romanticism.

The Top 8 Things to Do in Boppard, Germany

boppard tourist office

Boppard . It is a fun one to say, right? Bo-part . It's got a bounce, a history, and is located in a region — the Upper Middle Rhine Valley — that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Boppard itself is a designated Fremdenverkehrsort (state-recognized tourism resort), known for its wine growing . Word of its famed wines started with the Romans in 643 and today, over 75 hectares are devoted to its vineyards. It is actually the biggest wine-growing center in the Middle Rhine.

Visitors can take part in Boppard's walking tours operated by the tourism board (in a variety of languages by appointment from mid-April to mid-October) as well as use our guide to its top attractions and discover the heart and soul of Boppard.

How to Get to Boppard

Boppard is well-connected to the rest of Germany by car, train and even by boat.

Boppard is 10 km from major roadway A60. It is also accessible on the B9 which follows the Rhine River.

Boppard Hauptbahnhof lies between Mainz and Cologne on one of the most scenic stretches of Germany's excellent train network.

The Köln-Düsseldorfer Rheinschiffahrt (KD) ferry service runs all along the river with a stop in Boppard. Rhine River cruises are also quite popular with many stopping in the city on the their way through the Netherlands , France , Germany , Liechtenstein , Austria , and Switzerland .

Follow the Loop in the River

Boppard is centered on the Rhine and easily identified by its proximity to nearby Bopparder Hamm, the large loop in the river. The word Hamm comes from the Latin hamus , which means "hook" - fitting for such a dramatic u-turn.

Trek up to Vierseenblick (Four-Lake View) for segmented views of the river that make it look like four separate lakes. You can hike to the viewpoint or take a chairlift (April to September) for an easy 20-minute ride over vineyards than forest. From here you can also see (and plot a visit) to castles Burg Liebenstein and Burg Sterrenberg. Or cruise the Rhine for an ideal view of this UNESCO site.

Back in town, take an after dinner stroll of Rheinallee, a pedestrian promenade along the water bordered by boat docks, chic cafes, and cozy wine taverns.

Get Medieval at the Castle

Boppard's Electorial Castle (or Alte Burg , "Old Castle") is one of the few along the Middle Rhine that has never been destroyed. Visitors can explore its full 13th century majesty right along the water's edge in the center of town.

This is unusual as most castles were placed high away from the townsfolk on the highest hilltops. But this castle's placement was intention as its placement on the river allowed it to extract tolls on every boat and good that passed by on the Rhine.

The castle extended and morphed throughout its history. During the French Revolution, Boppard Castle was used a a hospital and during the 19th century it acted as a prison. In the 20th century, the west wing housed the police station.

Today, its grace has been restored with extensive renovations taking place between 2009 to 2015. The Thonet Museum , honoring famous Boppard son and furniture maker Michael Thonet, is housed in the castle as well as the Boppard Museum .

Go Wine Wandering

Surround yourself with the prized product of the region - wine. The Romans started growing wine here about 2,000 years ago and it has been perfected to an art form. The valley's geography is ideal for vineyards with a sunny south-facing incline.

The vineyards of Boppard Hamm are the largest in the Middle Rhine valley, divided into different areas known as Elfenlay and Weingrube and Mandelstein . Workers are constantly perfecting the vines, but visitors can simply enjoy walking along the grounds and sampling everything from riesling to müller-thurgau to pinot noir - produced right here. If you prefer to drink with a guide, Boppard Tourism offers vineyard tours with tastings.

Return to the city of Boppard to sample more wines from the area in the cozy atmosphere of a wine tavern, like Weinhaus Heilig Grab , Boppard’s oldest wine tavern dating back over 200 years. Or if you arrive at the end of September, the wine harvest begins and a wine festival celebrates the haul.

Admire Roman Ruins

The Roman influence isn't just found in the wine, but in preserved ruins. The best example of this is the Roman Fortress. This is one of the best-preserved Roman fortresses in Europe.

Römer-Kastell (or Römerpark ), just south of Marktplatz, is an archaeological site with original 4th-century Roman ruins. There are 28 semi-circular towers and walls that still stand nine meters high. Though the site is a shadow of itself as stronghold (the walls were once 3 meters thick), visitors can picture the place as it once was with a wall panel that depicts the original Roman town of Bodobrica.

Walk the Town Wall

Despite the development of the city, great care has been taken to maintain medieval elements. For example, many of the medieval town walls remain and are living pieces of the city. One of the town gates, Ebertor, has been transformed into a hotel.

These sections of the wall once separated the Altstadt (old town) from its expansions in the west ( Niederstadt or "Lower Town") and east ( Oberstadt and "Upper Town"). Other elements, like Säuerlingsturm (tower), have been moved to make room for newer construction like the Hunsrückbahn (train).

Get Holy at the Church

The Church of St. Severus is a beautiful example of late Romanesque architecture. 13th-century Severuskirche was built on the site of Roman military baths and a 6th century Christian church. Its towers define the city skyline.

Restorations since the 1960s have left it in impressive shape. The church features a grand cross with a crowned Jesus from 1220. The organ was refinished, wall paintings were freshened and the interior was restored as recently as 2010. In an unusual move, the church was even modernized with the market square lowered to make it barrier-free.

Even if you don't enter the church, you can't ignore its presence. The church has five bells (all which have survived since the medieval ages) and they ring out across the town at 10:00 and 12:00.

St. Severus is a registered monument and was raised to a Basilica minor in February 2015 by Pope Francis.

Dine with the Locals

Consistently ranked the number one restaurant in Boppard, expect a boisterous local crowd and good German cooking at Severus Stube (Untere Marktstrasse 7). Everything from Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) to Kasseler (smoked pork) is one the menu, ready to be washed down with bottles of local wine for a fair price.

The building is a classic in the heart of the city, half-timbered with outdoor seating on the narrow cobblestone street in the summer.

As this is a favorite with locals and tourists, reservations are recommended. While a little German is appreciated, staff is generally fluent in English and English menus are available.

Ride the Train Up, Up, Up

Hunsrückbahn is a picturesque railway runs among the trees and above the valleys and through the tunnels from Boppard to Emmelshausen . It is one of the steepest railways in Germany, and certainly one of the most scenic. On the six-kilometer climb between Boppard Hauptbahnhof to Boppard-Buchholz, the tracks climbs 336 meters. This charming stretch of rail has been designated a protected monument.

For those into a more active journey, take the Hunsrückbahn up the most unpleasant part of the hike to Buchholz or Emmelshausen and then amble down to Boppard. Hiking info and maps for the area (in German) can be found in this brochure .

Tickets can be purchased at the station or on the train. A single ticket can cost as little as 1.85 euros, but tarif depends on how far you ride the train. Though this rain line is operated by Rhenus Veniro , tickets for Rhineland-Palatinate and  Schönes-Wochenende-Tickets ( discount fares ) are also valid on the Hunsrückbahn.

Visit a historic castle

Electorial Castle (or Alte Burg , meaning Old Castle) is a 13th-century relic that enjoys a picture-perfect location by the river. The castle, originally responsible for collecting taxes from the boats passing through, has also served as a hospital, a prison and a police station over the later centuries. Today, visitors can tour the interiors of the castle and check out the interesting Boppard Museum and Thonet Museum housed inside.

Electorial Castle

Tour the vineyards

The Rhine region happens to be one of the most important wine-producing areas in the country, and Boppard proudly houses the largest vineyard in the Middle Rhine valley, Boppard Hamm. Visitors are welcome to tour the aromatic vineyards and sample local specialties like müller-thurgau and pinot noir. The Boppard Tourism Board even hosts a guided tour through the vineyards. If you are a true wine connoisseur, don’t miss the 200-year-old Weinhaus Heilig Grab tavern in town. Also, if you happen to find yourself in Boppard in Autumn, make sure to attend the wine festival .

Walk down Roman history

Visiting the archeological site of Römer-Kastell should be on the itinerary of anyone interested in history and architecture. This 4th-century fortress happens to one of the best preserved Roman fortresses in the continent. Though much of it is in ruins, the romance of its 28 ancient towers and thick, high walls is palpable.

Römer-Kastell

Go on a scenic train ride

For a few euros, you get to enjoy a short but incredibly scenic train ride on the Hunsrückbahn, and also mingle with locals as they go about their daily business. The most popular tourist stretch is the 15km from Boppard to Emmelshausen via Buchholz, when it passes through two viaducts, five tunnels and dense forests. The train also takes hikers to the starting points for great hiking and biking trails, such as Ehrbach Gorge and the Schinderhannes.

The railway viaduct

Admire the beauty of St. Severus Church

The skyline of Boppard is dominated by the twin towers of St. Severus Church. This 13-century church is considered an admirable specimen of late Romanesque architecture. You don’t need to be a believer to admire its intricate frescoes and the massive cross and Jesus from the year 1220. The five bells housed in the church resonate across town every day at 10am and 12 noon.

Follow the medieval town walls

What most travellers love about traditional German towns is how ancient structures never go out of fashion! They actually blend seamlessly with the modern infrastructure. Boppard is no exception. Several sections of Boppard’s medieval town walls are still around in near-original condition, adding old-world charm and lots of character to the town. It’s interesting to see how parts of the walls and gates have been modified to make room for modern structures.

Chug along on the little Rhein Express

A fun thing for the entire family to do in Boppard is to explore the town in a cute train – the Rhein Express . The train chugs contemplatively through the tourist attractions in town, past the medieval walls, along the river and the market place. The entire journey takes around 30 minutes.

Ultimate Guide to Boppard Germany

Boppard in Germany guide

A lovely town in a scenic location overlooking the majestic Rhine River : that’s Boppard, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. With its picturesque medieval old town, its famous vineyards, its endless trekking trails, and the unique location making it the perfect base or stop for a river cruise, it’s surely one of the best German weekend getaways.

Boppard lies at the heart of the Rhine River Valley, which was also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002, and its origins date back to several centuries ago: it was actually established by Julius Caesar, in the attempt of stopping the Gaul army and protect the Rhine River left bank.

It was just a military outpost at first, but it later became a flourishing town that experienced its golden age during the Roman Imperial era.

At present, Boppard is a popular tourist destination offering several historical, cultural, and natural attractions, other than producing some excellent wines that are exported all over Europe.

Electoral Castle in Boppard, Germany

The so-called Electoral Castle, or Alte Burg in German, is a medieval castle dating back to the XIII century and overlooking the Rhine River. Its location makes it one of a kind: it was not built on top of a hill, like most of the other castles in the Rhine River Valley, but it was built right by the water instead.

That’s because it wasn’t meant to be a military outpost, but its main function was collecting the tolls from every ship passing by! Inside, you can visit the Boppard Museum, and the Thonet Museum, which is dedicated to a local famous chair designer and businessman.

25 Best Things to do in Boppard

Despite this being a lovely wine village for people who want a quiet weekend, there’s a surprising number of things to do here.

Ruby and I wandered around on an April day and want to share our experience with you.

Overall Best

1. Ride the Boppard Chairlift to the Vierseenblick (four lakes view)

The Boppard Chairlift took us on a gentle ride to the Vierseenblick viewpoint, otherwise known as the four lakes view. You can see the illusion of four separate lakes due to the extreme bend in the Rhine River here in the middle Rhine Valley.

As we ascended, the beautiful landscape unfolded before my eyes, and I couldn’t help but be dazzled by the sight of the Rhine, the vineyards, and the surrounding forest.

As a physical therapist, I’m always down for tourism that is accessible for all mobility levels and the chairlift is one of the best things to do in Boppard for all ages.

If you are exploring more of Germany’s Rhine valley, you can also ride the Rüdesheim gondola or Niederwald Assmannshausen chairlift .

On the Moselle River just a 30 minute drive away, you can ride the Cochem chairlift too.

2. Relax on a Rhine River Cruise

Things to do in boppard

A trip to Boppard would not be complete without a river cruise to enjoy a leisurely tour of the Rhine.

You’ll admire the picturesque scenery, including castles, vineyards, and quaint villages lining the riverbanks.

Boppard is very close to the famous (or infamous) Loreley rock and while I won’t spoil the story for you completely…think sirens and sailors.

⛴️ This is my favorite Rhine River cruise from Boppard.

3. Turn Inside at St. Severus Church

Things to do in boppard

Another attraction that left a lasting impression on me was the stunning St. Severus Church. It was built in the 11th and 12th centuries over Roman baths.

As I wandered through the serene atmosphere, I marvelled at the architecture and the beautiful frescoes on display.

Opening times:  10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.

4. Stroll on the Rheinallee Promenade

Things to do in boppard

During my stroll along the Rheinallee Promenade, I was delighted by the view of the Rhine and the vibrant scene of people enjoying the outdoors.

There are plenty of places to grab a drink or snack and benches to relax on to watch the people and boats go by.

5. Take the Harry Potter Train to Ehrbachklamm

ehrbachklamm

I didn’t take this ride, but I definitely have enjoyed the fairytale waterfall hike at the end of the touristic train ride at the mystical Ehrbachklamm serviced by the Hunsrückbahn (train).

The restored train goes from Boppard to Emmelshausen and has 5 tunnels and 2 viaducts that look like a mini-Harry Potter train.

Here’s their website for more info to book.

🏰 I built this Rhine River Castle Guide specifically for people to understand the history and architecture of the amazing castles in the Rhine River Gorge.

Outdoor Activities in and Around Boppard

6. Rhine Castle Hiking Trails

boppard tourist office

Boppard has some of the most beautiful and varied hiking trails along the Rhine River with some of the most scenic views I’ve ever seen.

  • The Vierseenblick is truly unusual and easily accessed by hiking the Mittelrhein-Klettersteig Boppard or using the Boppard chairlift (for an easier approach).
  • Another of my favorite trails was the 200 km long Rhine Castles Trail that goes right through Boppard.  I’ve only hiked sections of it, but one day I’d love to do the entire trail and stay in cute towns like Boppard each night at a caste hotel.
  • And just outside Boppard is the lovely “dream slice” Ehrbachklamm hike that is about 6 miles or 10km with narrow gorges and spilling waterfalls.

If you’re not sure how much time you need to hike, you can use my hiking time calculator to estimate your time and not end up out after dark.

7. Ride the River Cycling Routes OR Bike Park

Things to do in boppard

I found that Boppard is an ideal destination for cycling enthusiasts like me, with numerous cycling routes along the picturesque Rhine River that are mostly flat.

However, there is a really cool bmx / mountain bike park at the top of the Boppard chairlift for more adventurous bike riders.

8. Climb on a Via Ferrata – MittelRhein Klettersteig

Things to do in boppard

It’s not every day that you get to try out a Via Ferrata , so I was thrilled to find the MittelRhein Klettersteig in Boppard. This route offers a unique combination of hiking and climbing for an exhilarating experience, with stunning views of the Rhine Valley. The adrenaline rush was totally worth it!

To tackle this challenging route, you’ll need to rent Via Ferrata (Klettersteig) equipment at the Base Camp bar and restaurant near the chairlift, which is open from 10:00-19:00 (10 am to 7 pm). The climb takes about 3 hours, so it’s recommended to start before 16:00 (4 pm).

9. Golf at Jakobsberg

I’m not a golfer… yet! I do know a lot of people love it and how much better can golf get than playing with a view of the Rhine River and Boppard from above?   Reviews state that it’s pretty nice, there are trainers and it’s not too expensive.

There’s also mini-golf right near the Boppard chairlift ascent in town for the rest of us. 😇

10. Fly Above the Riverbed Paragliding at Gedeonseck

Things to do in boppard

If you really want to level up your adventure, you can go paragliding from the Gedeonseck near the top of the Boppard chairlift.

🪂 If you’re not sure about paragliding, read my article on how to go first time paragliding and learn how dangerous paragliding is .

Culinary Experiences in Boppard

 11. Wine Tasting – This is Roman Wine Country in Germany!

One of the best things to do in Boppard is to try its exceptional wines, thanks to its location along the Rhine River.

I can’t wait to try various Rieslings and other regional specialties at local wineries and wine bars, such as the Weingut Matthias Müller .

If you’re in the mood for red wines, you should take a boat cruise and do some fun things in nearby Assmannshausen on the right bank of the Rhine .

12. Savor the Local Restaurants

Things to do in boppard

When it comes to dining options, Boppard has a number of local restaurants that offer delicious, authentic cuisine. One of my favorites is Römerburg Weinhaus + Restaurant , which serves delectable German and European dishes.

Some other restaurants that caught my attention include:

  • Restaurant Alte Schmiede
  • Vierseenblick (on the mountain)
  • Gedeonseck (on the mountain)

These establishments serve mouthwatering local dishes that allow visitors to savor the rich flavors of the region.

13. Get Coffee on the Marktplatz

Things to do in boppard

After a fulfilling meal, I adore finding a cozy spot to enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee and watch the world go by.

Boppard’s Marktplatz is the perfect spot for this, with charming cafes like Chocobar and Lo Stivale espresso and gelato shop, both offering a relaxing atmosphere to sip a cappuccino and marvel at the beautiful market square and listen to the sounds of the beautiful fountain.

Historical Sites in Boppard Altstadt

I love the rich history of Boppard, and exploring its historical sites has been a highlight of my visit (despite all the hiking) 🥾😃. For detailed and up-to-date information, check the Boppard tourist signs, but here are some of my favorites.

14. Roman Fort

Things to do in boppard

One of the first places I ventured to was the Römer-Kastell , a Roman fort that dates back to almost two thousand years ago!

Just imagine the stories these medieval town walls could tell! I took a stroll around the ruins, trying to picture the soldiers who once walked the same ground.

15. Boppard Museum

Next on my list was the Museum Boppard. This charming museum provided me with a glimpse into the town’s fascinating past. I enjoyed the medieval artifacts, archaeological finds, and exhibits showcasing the Roman influence on Boppard.

16. Electoral Castle

Things to do in boppard

Then I checked out the Boppard’s Electoral Castle (Alte Burg), one of the few middle Rhine castles that has never been destroyed. The majestic 13th-century castle sits right along the riverbank, making it quite unique compared to other castles that are usually tucked away on hilltops.

Every stone seemed to whisper a tale from times long gone.

17. Karmeliterkirche (Carmelite Church)

Things to do in boppard

The first thing I saw after parking the car was the Carmelite Church (Karmeliterkirche).  There were even nuns in habits walking by!

The architecture of this beautiful church, located by the Rhine, enchanted me, and the serenity of the place truly touched my soul. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to soak up the rich history of this beautiful town.

Festivals and Events

 18. Boppard Wine Festival

Things to do in boppard

If you can plan your trip to coincide with the Boppard Wine Festival you’ll be in for a treat.  Held annually in late September, the festival offers an array of delightful activities for everyone to enjoy.

19. Summer Music Nights

Another memorable event I came across in Boppard was the Summer Music Nights . These relaxed Friday evenings by the Rhine provided a fantastic opportunity to enjoy live music, ranging from brass to rock tunes.

Day Trips from Boppard [Less Than 1 hour]

There is no shortage of day trips from Boppard.  Here are some of my favorite spots:

20. Oberwesel Day Trip

Things to do in boppard

I loved walking around the picturesque town of Oberwesel , visiting the beautiful red Liebfrauenkirche church near the train station, and admiring the well-preserved town wall with 18 medieval towers.

🔥 Travel Tips: Burg hotel auf Schönburg is my all time favorite castle hotel in Germany.

21. Rüdesheim Day Trip

Things to do in boppard

Another memorable day trip took me to Rüdesheim , a lovely town nestled along the right Rhine River.

Here, I enjoyed a leisurely stroll down the charming Drosselgasse, a narrow lane filled with wine bars, shops, and restaurants. On this sunnier side of the Rhine you’ll find a really cool gondola that goes next door to Assmannshausen.

22. Burg Rheinfels Day Trip

For a bit of adventure, I decided to visit Burg Rheinfels , an imposing fortress near St. Goar only a 15 minute drive away from Boppard. The majestic castle offered me a glimpse into the fascinating history of the region.

As I climbed the walls and explored the castle grounds, I was rewarded with unbelievable views of the Rhine Valley and its beautiful surroundings.

🏰 On a different trip, I loved staying at Hotel Schloss Rheinfels , a true castle hotel.

23. Calmont Klettersteig Adventure Day Trip

Things to do in boppard

Located only one hour drive away on the equally beautiful Moselle River, the Calmont Klettersteig is another via ferrata that actually goes right through the steepest vineyard in Europe.

It’s really not that hard, my mini-doodle did it (with a boost from me up the metal ladders). I have vertigo when doing hikes in the Alps or Dolomites, but this was just pure fun.

And while there are numerous wine tasting areas on the trail (including a wine vending machine) I would save wine tasting for AFTER the klettersteig.

24. Geierlay Suspension Bridge – 2nd Longest in Germany

Things to do in boppard

The Geierlay suspension bridge is a 40 minute drive away from Boppard and is one of the best adventure day trips in Germany.

You can cross the 2nd longest suspension bridge in Germany on this day trip.  It’s 100 meters high and 360 meters long.

25. Burg Reichenstein Museum

Things to do in boppard

35 minutes away from Boppard and also on the left bank of the Rhine is the restored castle and gardens at Burg Reichenstein.  You can have a lovely meal here, tour the gardens and the museum.

My best mother’s day was spent hiking between castle hotels on the Rhine river and this is one of the castle hotels that we stayed at.

How to Get to Boppard

Things to do in boppard

By Train: The Boppard Hauptbahnhof lies between Mainz and Cologne on one of the most scenic stretches of Germany’s excellent train network.

Boppard is served by the MittelrheinBahn and the main station is right in the center of town.

When you book your transport online, I personally recommend and always use OMIO . They search for trains, buses, flights and ferries, so you get the easiest way to your destination!

Things to do in boppard

By Car: Boppard is just 10 km away from the major roadway A60. There are multiple ferries that allow you to criss cross the Rhine river, so it’s easy to drive to Boppard from wherever you may be approaching.

There can be backups however, just give yourself some extra time. Parking can be challenging in summer and is usually paid. Bring euro coins for the machines.

By Flight: If you want to catch a flight to Boppard, the closest airport is Frankfurt International , about a 1.5 hour drive.  Cologne-Bonn , Luxemburg and Frankfurt Hahn are also within 2 hours drive.

How Long to Stay in Boppard

Things to do in boppard

Most people coming to Boppard may only be here as a stop on the Rhine River boat cruises and that’s totally fine.

You can see quite a few things in the space of an afternoon.

However if you really want to soak in the genuine German ambiance I would suggest 2-3 days to really see all that it has to offer.

Boppard Castle Tours: A weekend getaway to Boppard is perfect to pair with a visit to next door Sankt Goar and its Burg Rheinfels castle hotel & museum or Schloss Schöneck sitting above the town.

How to Get Around Boppard

Things to do in boppard

One of the best ways to get to know Boppard is by walking around the Altstadt, or Old Town. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you wander through the narrow streets and admire the half-timbered houses.

You can also rent a bike or ebike, but the town is small enough for most people to enjoy it by foot. To reach other villages or towns on the Rhine you can utilize the train and bus system, hike, bike or go by car.

🚘 Looking for a car rental service?

If you need a car for your trip, then my personal recommendation is to choose Discover Cars , an Award winning car rental comparison website. You can find, compare and rent a car globally there.

Best Time of Year to Visit Boppard

Year Round Fun – but April through October is the Best

Mother’s day is my absolute favorite time to visit. The canola oil fields are blooming a brilliant yellow and fruit trees are still in blossom.

The crowds haven’t come yet and you get to enjoy restaurants and wine tastings without reservations. However, the rest of the year has its benefits and you can always go hiking.

January through March is the low season and many hotels and restaurants are closed.

Luxury | Best Spa Hotel in Boppard

One of my favorite hotels is the Bellevue Rheinhotel , a spa hotel nestled in the old town and close to the river. The view is simply fantastic, and I found it to be an excellent value for money. Not to mention, it’s close to restaurants, shops, and cafes.

Mid-Range Hotel Boppard

Another scenic gem I came across is the Hotel Zur Fahre   situated right in front of the pier and the ferry stop. This lovely hotel offers convenience and gorgeous views of the river, making it a must-see lodging option.

For more of a budget stay, I would recommend the Hotel Das Ebertor, it offers both hostel and hotel accommodations and is a little bit outside the main center directly on the water with a park.

Why Visit Boppard Germany

Image of St Severus Church Boppard Germany

Boppard is a beautiful medieval town on the banks of the famous Rhine river. It has one of the prettiest historic centres of any of the Rhine river towns , rich in medieval architecture. Boppard is one of the livelier Rhine towns, bigger and busier than most of its counterparts upstream, with plenty of restaurants and wineries to entice you. It makes a wonderful base to explore the Rhine.

The Boppard chairlift also takes you to one of the scenic highlights of the Rhineland, the Bopparder Hamm, a horseshoe-shaped bend in the river. Boppard is a convenient base for exploring the Rhine Valley, and also the nearby Mosel and Lahn Valleys.

Boppard Germany History

Image of a house dating from 1519 in Boppard Germany

There was some sort of settlement in what is now as far back as 13,000 years ago. Its earlier name – Baudobriga, which was used by the Romans – has Celtic origins, so the Celts would have also lived there for a considerable time.

While the frontiers of the Roman Empire expanded, Boppard, like other towns along the narrow Rhine Gorge, grew as an important trading centre.

The town was fortified by the Romans, most likely during the reign of Valentinian I, after the Germani wrested control of the right bank of the Rhine from them. The Romans departed in 405 AD to defend Roman territories in what is now Italy.

Image of the Roman fort in Boppard Germany

We know little of the history of Boppard until 643 AD, when we know that it was governed by the Franks.  It later became a free city within the Holy Roman Empire.

In 1309, Emperor Henry VII (Heinrich VII) handed control of Boppard to his brother, Archbishop of Trier. The Electorate of Trier already had other possessions in the Rhine Valley, and the local population was strongly against this.

This state of affairs continued for centuries. In 1497 the citizens of Boppard began an insurrection, which was suppressed by the Electorate’s army. Boppard remained under the government of the Electorate of Trier for most of the ensuing 300 years, until 1815 and the Congress of Vienna. Prussia then assumed control of the town.

Best Things to Do In Boppard Germany

1. explore boppard altstadt.

Image of houses in Altstadt Boppard Germany

The Altstadt – Old Town – of Boppard is gorgeous.  The streets and alleyways are full of gloriously wonky medieval half-timbered houses, mainly from the 16 th and 17 th centuries.

Start at the Marktplatz, where there are some handsome houses close to the Severuskirche, and wander from there. You won’t have to venture far to find some wonderful old houses, and look closely to find some exquisite carved details. Take a look at our selection of images to get a flavour of it.

2. Visit the Severuskirche – St Severus Church

Image of St Severus church in old town Boppard Germany

The main landmark in Boppard is the twin-spired Romanesque Severuskirche, which dominates the Marktplatz. It was built over the site of the town’s Roman baths. It’s one of the finest examples of Rhenish Romanesque, dating from the later part of this architectural period, into the 13 th century.

If you enjoy the likes of Maria Laach Abbey or the many Romanesque churches in Cologne, you’ll love this church. The tall spires are among the most elegant Romanesque buildings you’ll ever see. The interior is fine too, with some superb medieval frescoes, especially on the north wall of the nave.

3. Visit Boppard Museum

Image of the Electors Castle in Boppard Germany

The Electoral Castle (Kurfurstliches Burg) in Boppard  – right next to the riverfront – is home to the  town’s Museum.  The building, an extension of the Alte Burg (Old Castle) by Baldwin of Trier, houses exhibitions on the history of the Castle and town.

There is also a strong art collection and an exhibition of the works of local furniture maker Michael Thonet (1796 – 1871). He is best known as the inventor of bentwood furniture (made using wood bent into curves using steam). His No. 14 Chair was one of the first mass-produced pieces of furniture, and has been made since 1867.

4. Visit The Castles Of The Feuding Brothers

Image of Liebenstein and Sterrenberg Castles Rhine Valley Germany

While exploring the Rhine we stayed in the spa village of Bad Salzig , 7 km (4.5 miles) upriver from Boppard. Whenever we went outside we were treated to the sight of two Rhine river castles on a ridge across the river, within just 200 metres of each other.

The two castles – Liebenstein and Sterrenberg – are popularly known as the Feuding Brothers or Hostile Brothers. Like the tales of the Loreley mermaid luring ships onto rocks, this is most likely another Rhine myth. German poet Heinrich Heine wrote about the Loreley and also composed the poem Zwei Brüder ( Two Brothers) about the castles.

His poem is probably the source of the story. There is no record of the two castle owners being either brothers or in conflict with each other. It’s possible that one of the castles may have been an annexe or extension of the other.

Regardless, after a few castle-free miles, the two castles together are a welcome sight, like two long-awaited London buses.

Nowadays Liebenstein Castle is a small hotel with restaurant and café. You can also stay in apartments in Burg Sterrenberg, which also has a café and restaurant. They are close to the village of Kamp-Bornhofen .

5. Take a Walk Around The Roman Fort In Boppard

Towards the end of the Romans’ domination of this part of Europe, they fortified Boppard. The Germani had occupied the opposite bank of the river, and the Romans had their rule and trade to protect.

The remains of the Römer Kastell in Boppard are much more extensive than I had anticipated. The stout thick walls and towers are a very impressive sight, and if you enjoy the Roman sites in Trier you’ll be intrigued by this fort. It’s free to visit, and an interpretation board helps you picture what Roman Baudobriga would have looked.

6. Enjoy A Drink Or Walk On The Boppard Rhine Riverfront

Image of the rhine riverfron t in Boppard Germany

The riverfront at Boppard is one of the most pleasant along the Rhine. It helps that the railway happens to be 200-300 metres from the river so that the town isn’t separated from the river by the tracks.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the way, some attached to Boppard hotels. It’s a great spot to while an hour or so away, either over a meal, a bottle of wine or a glass or two of beer.

7. Enjoy A Ride On The Boppard Sesselbahn

Image of chairlift in Boppard Germany

If you have a head for heights, the Boppard chairlift is a must-do.  The lift serenely hauls you up above the vineyards to the top of the hill to the west of Boppard. And from here you get to enjoy some outstanding views.

It’s a 20-minute trip each way, a 240-metre climb in total. At the top, turn right and follow the signs to our next Boppard things to do – see immediately below.

8. Relax With A Drink Or Eat A Meal At Gedeons Eck Restaurant

Image of a glass of beer and the Bopparder Hamm river bend Boppard Germany

From the hilltop station of the Boppard Seilbahn, turn right and walk a few minutes along the ridge to the Gedeons Eck restaurant. The outdoor tables are in pleasant shade, and offer an extraordinary view of the horseshoe-shaped bend of the Rhine below.

You can order a classic German meal there or just opt for a glass of wine or beer as I did. A magnificent spot.

9. Take A Short Walk To The Vierseenblick Viewpoint

Image of the view from the Vierseenblick viewpoint Boppard Germany

It’s another five-minute walk beyond the restaurant to the Vierseenblick viewpoint. From there the view of the river is partly obscured, so you can see four separate sections of water, hence the name.

The open panoramic view from Gedeons Eck is better, but this is still well worth the short extra walk.

10. Cross The Rhine On The Boppard Ferry

Image of the Boppard ferry across the river Rhine Germany

There are no bridges across the Rhine in the 65 km long Rhine Gorge, so the only way to cross the river is by boat.

There’s a fine view back to Boppard from above the ferry wharf. Other than that, you could use the ferry to access the right bank of the Rhine. If you walk 500 metres or so left from there, you reach Filsen station . The RB10 (check the Deutsche Bahn site for times) train takes you to Braubach (for Marksburg Castle) in one direction, or Kamp-Bornhofen for the Feuding Brothers Castles in the other.

11. Cycle The Rhine From Boppard

image of bicycles on the promenade in Boppard Germany

Cycling along the riverside path is a wonderful way to see the Rhine.  We didn’t do so ourselves, but I spoke with a couple who rode from where we stayed in Bad Salzig to Boppard, then caught the ferry and continued north to Braubach and Marksburg Castle.

The path is well-maintained and signposted, and you can cycle in either direction along the length of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

12. Take A Rhine River Cruise From Boppard

Image of Burg Katz from St Goar Germany

One of the best ways to enjoy the Rhine Valley is a cruise along the river. This is a great way to enjoy the stunning landscape, with its pretty villages, steep hills, vineyards and romantic castles.

This two-and-a-half-hour cruise from Boppard takes you through some of the most spectacular Rhine scenery. You travel as far south as the famous Loreley rock just south of St Goarshausen, and see several Rhine castles, including the picturesque Burg Katz, imposing Burg Rheinfels and Burg Maus, a rival owned by the Electors of Trier.

Where Is Boppard Germany

Image of medieval houses in Boppard Germany

Boppard is on the left bank of the River Rhine, and part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is 20 km (13 miles) south of the nearest city, Koblenz, and 108 km (67 miles) from Cologne.

How To Get To Boppard Germany

Closest airport to boppard.

Image of Boppard Germany and the river Rhine

If you’re flying long haul to Germany, the most convenient place to arrive is Frankfurt, with Cologne-Bonn a good alternative.

Boppard – and the Rhine Valley in general – is very easy to reach from either airport. It’s over two hours from Frankfurt Airport to Boppard, and this involves two changes, sometimes three.

On average the journey from Cologne-Bonn Airport is 20-30 minutes quicker, and often involves a single change, at Koblenz Hbf.

If you’re travelling from elsewhere in Europe, bear in mind that many flights  – especially with Ryanair and Wizzair – go to Frankfurt-Hahn, which is close to the Mosel Valley and the Rhine. You can get to Boppard from there by bus and train, with one change.  It can take three hours to reach Boppard.

If you’re travelling by car, Boppard is only an hour’s drive from Frankfurt-Hahn. We recommend discover cars who offer a comprehensive listing of all car rental options.

Getting to Boppard By Train

Image of the Severuskirche in Boppard Germany

Trains to Boppard Germany are frequent, with two regional services and additional high-speed services calling there every hour.  Bear in mind that you need tickets for Boppard Hbf, the main station as opposed to Boppard-Bad Salzig or Boppard-Hirzenach, which are further upriver.

Journey times to Boppard from other German cities include:

Cologne to Boppard – between 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 50 minutes.

Bonn to Boppard – between 55 minutes and 1 hour 20 minutes

Frankfurt to Boppard – between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours

Mainz to Boppard – between 48 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes

Boppard is a great base for exploring more of the Rhine Valley.  It’s a few miles upstream from one of the most formidable Rhine River Castles , the impregnable Marksburg Castle , which towers above the pretty, oh-so-quiet village of Braubach .

Image of Cochem and the Reichsburg Castle Mosel Valley Germany

From there, it’s a short train ride into Koblenz, but perhaps more tempting is a trip along the Mosel Valley, perhaps to Cochem or the nearby fairytale wine village of Beilstein . It’s another 40-60 minutes from there to the fascinating ancient city of Trier , which was once the Romans’ capital of northern Europe.

If you head upstream from Boppard, the next town you reach is St Goar , another good base for exploring the Rhine Gorge. It’s below mighty Rheinfels Castle , the largest Castle in the Rhine Valley, and from the town you get a great view across to Burg Katz , one of the most picturesque Rhine castles. The famous Loreley cliff, source of many a Rhine legend, is also just across the river, south of the village of St Goarshausen.

Beyond there, the town of Oberwesel Germany is rich in architectural treasures, with two outstanding medieval churches. It also has a superb set of town walls and towers, and is surrounded by vineyards covering every square inch of the steep hills.

Continue beyond Oberwesel to the striking Pfalzgrafenstein Castle , a white toll castle on an island in the middle of the river. Two miles further on, Bacharach is for us the most beautiful town on the Rhine, with every other building a half-timbered masterpiece.

The southernmost part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is just as compelling with Rheinstein Castle another of the best romantic Rhine castles. The most popular Rhine river town, Rüdesheim is one of the best places to visit on the Rhine. It has fantastic medieval architecture, a few quirky museums and the many restaurants on its most famous street, Drosselgasse.

Boppard Germany – Final Words

Boppard Germany is one of the best Rhine river towns to visit. It’s visually one of the most beautiful towns in the World Heritage Rhine Gorge, and also one of the liveliest.  The scenery is also superb, so try to make a day – and night – of it if you can.

12 best things to do in boppard, germany.

Everyone should visit Germany’s Upper Middle Rhine Valley at least once in their lifetime. UNESCO World Heritage-listed since 2002, this is fairytale Germany, awash with Gothic church spires, terraced vineyards and turreted castles.

It’s not known as the Romantic Rhine for nothing.

Boppard is an excellent base to explore other towns and villages in the Rhine Valley and a destination in its own right. But what are the best things to do in Boppard, Germany?

This is where I can help. I used Boppard as my base for exploring the Rhine Valley and am excited to share my experience of this lovely town. This Boppard travel guide includes places to visit that you can’t miss, how to get there and where to stay.

Quick Facts About Boppard

Located on the west bank of the curviest curve of the Rhine River, Boppard is a small town approximately 50 miles south of Cologne and 60 miles west of Frankfurt. It is home to around 15,000 souls.

Although Boppard was the site of an early Celtic settlement, it was first mentioned in historical records in the 4th century AD. The town was one of the most important Roman settlements on the Middle Rhine.

After the triumph of Julius Caesar’s campaigns in Germania, there were Roman troops on the Rhine as early as 50 BC. In the 4 th Century AD, they built a fort here, Bodobrica (Baudobriga), from which the present name Boppard is derived.

The town became a royal residence under the  Merovingian dynasty , the Frankish dynasty that ruled between 476 – 750 AD. It thrived as an important trading centre during the Middle Ages.

Boppard was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th Century but was rebuilt and continued to flourish as a centre of trade and industry. Although Boppard suffered significant pummelling during World War I, much of the historic town centre survived.

Best Things to Do in Boppard

Here are the best things to do in Boppard and beyond. Most of these places are in Boppard itself; the final three are other must-see attractions along the Rhine Valley (travel to at least one of these by boat).

  • Explore Boppard’s Roman Legacy
  • Photograph Boppard’s medieval buildings
  • Take in the view from Boppard Town Museum
  • Visit the Church of St. Severus
  • Relax over coffee in the market square
  • Admire the choir stalls at the Carmelite Church
  • Amble along Boppard’s Rhinefront promenade
  • Go wine-tasting
  • Take the Sesselbahn for the best view of the Rhine Valley
  • Visit Burg Rheinfels
  • Soak up the medieval atmosphere of Bacharach
  • Walk the walls of Oberwesel

1. Explore Boppard’s Roman Legacy

remain of the roman fort with stone tower visiting which is one of the best things to do in boppard

Boppard is home to the finest preserved Roman fortification in Germany. Built in the latter half of the 4 th Century to protect the settlement from marauding Gauls, the Bodobrica citadel formed a rectangle of around 4.7 hectares and its walls were 10 feet high and 8 feet thick.

Visit Boppard Archaeological Park on Angertsraße to get a sense of how impressive this Roman fortress was. Entry is free.

2. Photograph Boppard’s historic buildings

Boppard is a delicious buffet of half-timbered medieval buildings. If time is short, make a beeline for these two historic properties:

Schnuggelelsje (Haus Heimburger)

aerial view of side of whitewashed church and pink and white half-timbered building

I love the story behind the name of this, one of the oldest, half-timbered houses in Boppard.

In the early 20 th Century, this building was a tiny shop owned by Else Heimburger and stocked with sweets sold for just a few pfennigs. The Boppard children adored her and named her Schnuggelelsje.

Next to the building, which is now home to a restaurant, is a much-photographed bronze sculpture of Schnuggelelsje. You’ll find it at Untere Marktstraße 24.

bronze sculpture of child holding his hand out to an old woman

This former “little tea house” at Untere Marktstraße 10 is Boppard’s oldest half-timbered building. Built in 1519, it now houses a café.

After you have looked at these two historic buildings, take a walk along Bingerstraße where you will find some of Boppard’s finest 17 th Century houses.

At one end is the Balz , a small triangular-shaped square. Bingen Gate , of which only the archways at the town side survive, is at its far end.

3. Take in the view from Boppard Town Museum

twin black and white bell towers of an old church amongst the old buildings of the town of Boppard in germany

The Rhine-facing Electoral Castle (Kurfustliche Schlossis) is another must-see sight in Boppard.

Although work started on this building as early as the 13 th Century, it wasn’t completed until the end of the 17 th Century. Built to collect tolls from passing boats in the Rhine, it has had many incarnations, including a hospital, a prison and a police station.

Today, it is home to the Museum Boppard. This has information about the town’s history and is a shrine of sorts to the furniture maker, Michael Thonet , who was born in Boppard.

Although you can scan a few QR codes for a handful of audio clips in English, all the display information is in German.

For me, the highlight of the visit was climbing the 80 steps to the Electoral Castle’s tower for magnificent views across Boppard and the Rhine.

You can check opening hours and ticket prices here .

4. Visit the Church of St. Severus

vibrant stained glass depicting biblical secne of the raising of lazarus

The twin towers of the 13 th Century Church of St. Severus pierce the sky above Boppard’s medieval rooftops. Vibrant stained glass windows illuminate the interior of this Late Romanesque church.

A 13 th Century triumphal cross above the main altar depicts Christ crowned as the victor over death. A serene Madonna cradles the Christ child and clutches a lily sceptre.

Other highlights of this minor basilica include arches painted with the legend of St. Severus, a 5 th Century baptismal font and early Christian gravestones.

Pick up a free leaflet with map as you enter the church.

5. Relax over coffee in the market square

The Church of St. Severus was built on the site of the Roman military baths in what is today Boppard’s Market Square (Marktplatz).

Just as in Roman times, this is the centre of town. Looking for all the world like a Renaissance palace, the former Town Hall (1885) features ornate windows. Also in the square is the Thonet Fountain (1992), dedicated to Boppard’s favourite son.

6. Admire the choir stalls at the Carmelite Church

Boppard’s Carmelite Church was one of my favourite places to visit, its extravagantly sumptuous interior at odds with its austere and unremarkable architecture.

Step inside this 18 th Century Baroque church to see its elaborately carved choir stalls (1460 – 70) and the fresco above the pulpit illustrating the legend of St. Alexius.

7. Stroll along Boppard’s Rhinefront promenade (Rheinallee)

pink and red flowers along the rhine riverfront promenade in boppard germany

Much of Boppard’s charm is thanks to its ravishing Rhinefront location. Rheinallee makes the most of the town’s location.

Lined with hotels, cafes and restaurants, Boppard’s riverfront pedestrian promenade also features grassy parklands and is a riot of pink and red geraniums. From here, you can catch boats to take you along the Rhine.

8. Go wine-tasting

glass of rose wine on a wooden table

Covering an area of 75 hectares, the Bopparder Hamm is the largest single vineyard in the Middle Rhine. Reisling is the King of the Vines and aromas such as apple, mint and spices give the Boppard Reisling a distinctive flavour.

The highlight of the wine-making season is the annual Wine Festival which takes place at the end of September or the beginning of October. However, there are opportunities to taste local wines year-round.

Vineum wine shop in the main market square offers tastings but my favourite place was Weinhaus Heilig Grab . The sheltered garden of this family-run wine tavern is the perfect place to taste Boppard wines.

9. Take the Sesselbahn for the best view of the Rhine Valley

signpost on a hillside with a river in the background

If it’s an iconic Rhine Valley view that you are after, take the Sesselbahn to Vierseenblick , also known as the Four Lakes View. Thanks to the horseshoe bend in the river at Boppard, the Rhine looks like four lakes when viewed from this height.

panoramic view of a bend in the rhine river giving the illusion of 4 lakes with a central island

The easiest way to get to the Four Lakes View is to take the chair lift– the Sesselbahn – from the eastern end of town (just follow the signs on the Rheinallee). From the chairlift’s terminus, it’s a ten-minute walk to Vierseenblick.

But don’t do this if you don’t have a head for heights.

Against my better instincts, I took a ride on the Sesselbahn, swinging high above the steep slope to Vierseenblick. It was one of the longest 20 minutes of my life.

chairlift high above forsted hillside next to the rhine river

Alternatively, follow one of the walking trails to reach the viewpoint. A steep and rocky trail mostly follows the path of the Sesselbahn. Being part goat will be a huge advantage.

Once you reach the viewpoint, there are a few cafes and walking trails. If you walk for a further five minutes, you will reach a second viewpoint, Gedeonseck .

10. Visit Burg Rheinfels

intact ruins of a castle in the rhine valley germany with windows and towers

Rheinfels Castle (Burg Rheinfels), one of the best-preserved castles on the Rhine River, is an easy half-day trip from Boppard. Simply catch a river boat or the local train to St. Goar, from where it is a 15-minute walk.

Once the mightiest of the Rhine River castles, the 13 th Century Burg Rheinfels ruled the river for more than 500 years. As ruined castles go, it’s up there with the best of them.

11. Soak up the medieval atmosphere of Bacharach

beautiful half-timbered buildings and a small bridge over a stream in the town of bacharach in Germany

For my money, Bacharach is the prettiest village in the Middle Rhine. Again, you can visit Bacharach by train or boat from Boppard.

As well as the perfectly preserved medieval buildings for which the town is famous, Bacharach has an attractive riverside park and two historic churches: the Gothic St. Peter’s Church and the ruins of the Wernerkapelle. Make sure you climb the Tall Tower for Romantic Rhine views you’ll never forget.

12. Walk the walls of Oberwesel

a tall tower rising over the rooftops of a town alongside a bend in a river

Just four miles from Bacharach, Oberwesel was a Celtic town in 400 BC and then a military station. It’s worth tagging this village onto a visit to Bacharach, purely to march along its medieval wall, the best preserved in the Rhine area.

During your visit to Oberwesel , pop into St Martin’s Church (Martinskirche), known locally as “the white church”, and the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche).

The Best Time to Visit Boppard

With the best chance of warm temperatures and longer days, summer (June to August) is the best time of year to visit Boppard. During the summer months, the Rhine riverboats operate a full schedule.

When I visited in August there was unbroken sunshine and clear skies.

However, summer is also the busiest time of year. To avoid the crowds, visit Boppard between March and May for mild temperatures and spring flowers.

Autumn (September to November) is also a good time to visit Boppard, with mild temperatures and fall foliage in the surrounding countryside.

Although the winter can be chilly and the Rhine riverboats operate a scaled-down service, Boppard holds a Christmas market.

How to Get to Boppard

By train: Boppard is easily accessible by rail and its train station is in the town centre. It is on the line that connects Koblenz and Mainz to Cologne, Frankfurt and beyond.

You can check train times and prices here .

By plane: If you are flying into Germany, the closest major international airport is Frankfurt (FRA) from where a direct train will whisk you to Boppard in I hour and 15 minutes.

By boat: Boppard is one of the towns served by Rhine riverboats operated by Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD).

Where to Stay in Boppard

As there are not a lot of centrally–located places to stay in Boppard, book as early as possible.

Is Boppard Good for Solo Travellers?

Boppard is a wonderful destination for solo travellers . Safety is important to female solo travellers and the town is small and safe, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The town is well connected, with regular trains and boats to other destinations along the Rhine River, making it easy for solo travellers to explore the surrounding area. Accommodation is affordable but make sure that you book early, especially in summer. There are plenty of things to do in Boppard if you are travelling alone. These include outdoor activities, such as hiking and biking, as well as learning more about Boppard’s rich history by visiting its historical sites and cultural attractions.

Boppard is 100% Worth Visiting!

Tranquil and picturesque Boppard is the Rhine Valley’s pearl in the shell, its treasures hidden in plain sight. Known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and beautiful setting, it has something for everyone.   For history fangirls and fanboys, there are opportunities to learn more about its Roman past. If wine tasting is more of your thing, Boppard is a major centre for wine production, notably the region’s famous Riesling.     Thanks to the spectacular surrounding scenery, several first-rate hikes are within easy reach. But ultimately, Boppard’s main draw is its easy access to leisurely riverboat trips along the Rhine.  Boppard is just big enough to have a bit of a vibe but small enough to retain its charm. It may not be as pretty as Bacharach or Oberwesel, but the town is situated at the most scenic point of the Rhine River and is not dissected by the railway line.

Boppard is in the Middle Rhine Valley in the Rhineland-Palatinate of Germany . It's on the west bank of the Rhine, at a point where the deep river gorge slaloms sharply (the Bopparder Hamm ) before continuing north towards Koblenz. It's been a settlement from Celtic times, and its geography made it a strategic site for the Romans. It has many interesting old buildings and is a regular calling point for Rhine river cruises, while the hills above are used for wine-growing.

  • Boppard, Germany: a day trip from Kaiserslautern

by Ildi · February 3, 2023

Boppard Germany Cover

Boppard is a town in the north of the Rhineland-Palatinate state in Germany. The small town on the Rhine is a surprisingly underrated destination for a day trip. It’s a short drive or train ride from Kaiserslautern . If you are planning your next day trip from the KMC area in Germany, consider checking out Boppard.

Boppard, Germany, is a picturesque little town with a lot of character and a lovely downtown area. It’s a town that takes its history seriously. But it’s not just about its history; it’s also a town with many things to see and do and even some excellent food.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at Boppard and see why it’s worth visiting. We will share with you some of the things to do in Boppard that you can enjoy during your visit. From enjoying gorgeous natural scenery to checking out the local museums, we will have something for everyone.

Things to see in Boppard

Boppard is a small town in Germany with a lot to offer visitors. Here are some of the things to do in Boppard:

Take a stroll in the old town

The old town area of Boppard lies on the left shore of the Rhine. You can quickly discover historical buildings on foot. As you walk on the cobblestoned streets, you will always get a glimpse of the riverside promenade.

In Boppard, the Rhine flows through its greatest bend, known as the Bopparder Hamm . You can walk along the promenade from the castle to the Bopparded Hamm and have a drink or bite in one of the many restaurants or bars.

Boppard, Germany riverfront

Take a boat tour on the Rhine River

Boppard lies at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rhine Valley and is a great starting point for a river cruise. You can take a boat tour and see the picturesque vineyards and castles in the Rhine Valley. The ticket office for the ferries is on the promenade. Address: Rheinallee 56154 Boppard

You can purchase your tickets there, and you are have to be at the landing-stage 15 minutes before departure. They offer several different tours, e.g., the nostalgia route with the highlights between Rüdesheim and Koblenz, or the Loreley tour to the spot where – according to the legend – a beautiful maiden threw herself into the river in despair over her lover and was transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to destruction.

Boppard, Germany, cruise

Take the Boppard Chairlift

The Sesselbahn in Boppard offers a scenic ride over the city. You’ll get a spectacular view of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding area. From Boppard-Mühltal, the chairlift takes you to the summit.

The view down the valley from the lift stretches south to Boppard, “the pearl of the Rhine.” You have a view of vineyards and forests, cliffs, and old oak trees.

The cable car runs daily from the end of March to the end of October.

Tip: When I visited in 2022, they didn’t take credit cards, so bring cash.

Vierseenblick

The destination of the chairlift is the best-known lookout point, the Vierseenblick (“Four-Lake-View”). From the vantage point of the observation platform, the slopes and the Rhine loop create an optical impression that the Rhine is made up of four separate lakes,  vier seen.

Boppard is surrounded by beautiful nature, so why not take a walk and explore?

If you forgot to bring cash for the chairlift, walking up to Vierseenblick is enough hiking for a day. I have done this hike with two young children, and it was doable even without fancy hiking gear. The Vierseenblick station is the starting point for further beautiful walks and hikes.

Vierseenblick

Visit the Boppard wine cellars

Boppard is known for its wine-making, and you can visit the city’s many wine cellars and taste some of the local wines. Bopparder Hamm – the largest loop of the Rhine – gives its name to a famous wine-growing district. The slopes on the left bank of the Rhine form the largest area under vines in the Middle Rhine Valley. Mainly Riesling, Rivaner, and Pinot Noir are grown there.

Check out the Boppard Museum

Located in the former castle, the Boppard Museum is a great place to learn about the city’s history and the region. It features a wide range of artifacts, including the Thonet bentwood chair exhibition. Michael Thonet was born in Boppard and manufactured his famous furniture here, which is featured in an exciting exhibition today. Strange, but true.

Boppard Museum

Visit a festival

Several festivals take place in Boppard each year, such as the Boppard Wine Festival in September, the Boppard Festival of Jazz and Blues, and the Mittelrhein Musik Festival.

Things to eat in Boppard, Germany

The historic old town is home to various restaurants offering a range of traditional German and international cuisine. The German restaurants serve regional specialties such as riesling, schweinshaxe, and schnitzel, while the international restaurants offer dishes from all over the world.

Romerburg Restaurant in Boppard is a fine-dining restaurant that offers a cozy atmosphere. The menu includes classic German dishes like sauerbraten, schnitzel, and rouladen and international cuisine like pasta, steak, and seafood. The restaurant also has a great selection of wines and beer, making it ideal for a romantic evening or special occasion.

For a more casual outing, check out the popular Cafe zeitgeist. It is an inviting cafe that serves delicious freshly-brewed coffee and a variety of snacks. The atmosphere is modern and chic. Cafe Zeitgeist is the perfect place to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and some delicious panini while taking in the beautiful views of Boppard.

Things to buy in Boppard

Boppard, Germany, is a great place to shop and find unique items. From antiques to handmade jewelry, there is something for everyone here. You can find traditional German clothing, jewelry, pottery, and unique souvenirs from the area. Food lovers can enjoy fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and local wines. Boppard is also a great place to pick up some traditional German gifts like cuckoo clocks, wooden figurines, and hand-carved toys.

Useful information for visitors to Boppard

Getting to Bingen from Kaiserslautern

For those who live in Kaiserslautern, the regional train through Bingen is a great option to get to Boppard. This relaxing train ride takes you along the Rhein, a scenic route you can enjoy with your family or friends.

The other option is to take the A61 and A63 to get to Boppard. The drive is less scenic but faster than taking the train .  From the north (Koblenz), stay on the main road B9 through Boppard.

The Boppard tourist office offers a wealth of information on the town and its surroundings, as well as maps and brochures.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley is an excellent place to visit and explore with your precious holiday time. Boppard is located at a picturesque spot on the Rhine River at a horseshoe bend. It is may be my personal favourite town in the Rhine Valley when it comes to things to do.

Boppard Sesselbahn

Boppard isn’t just pretty but fun to explore with plenty of half-timbered houses and old wine taverns ensuring you have no problems trying the local riesling.

Table of Contents

An Introduction To Boppard

Boppard has a population of nearly 16,000 and I noticed the difference after hanging out in sleepy Bacharach and Oberwesel. It has a little more vibe. It’s located about an hour and half northwest of Frankfurt or a similar distance south of Cologne. It’s close to many of the Rhine Valley towns and attractions.

Boppard has always been a strategic point thanks to being on the largest curve of the Rhine River. It has a long history with a storage yard having been found here which dates back 13,000 years!

There was also a Celt settlement here and a Roman one. The Romans called it Baudobriga and the modern name is derived from this. It was strategically important thanks to being on the Roman limes, but as their area expanded, this area became less strategically important. However, the Rhine was becoming increasingly important as a supply and trade route.

By the mid 3rd century, the Rhine had become the border of the Roman Empire again and the town increased in importance. Around this time is when parts of the Römer-Kastell (attraction listed below) were constructed.

Boppard Germany

In the early 5th century, the last of the Roman troops returned to Italy and the next time Boppard is found in documents is not until 643. At this time, it had become a Frankish royal estate and was an administration centre.

Boppard became a Free Imperial City until 1309 and was a popular place for Kings to visit. It was a centre of trade and shipping.

However at this time, Emperor Henry VII gave Boppard to his brother, Archbishop Baldwin of Trier. This was not a popular decision among Boppard’s residents who set up their own council. Baldwin stormed the town and stopped the council and Boppard became part of the Electorate of Trier.

The townsfolk continued to be unhappy and did what they could to be freed from the electorate. This came to a head in 1497 when the Boppard War took place. The Trier Electorate sent 12,000 soldiers and it did not take long for Boppard to surrender and finally accept they were part of the Electorate.

It basically stayed this way until being passed to Prussia in the Congress of Vienna in 1815. However, it was occupied over the years. The Swedish took it over in 1632 as part of the Thirty Years’ War. Boppard lost about a third of its population during this war.

In 1794, French Revolutionary troops occupied Boppard, and this stayed the case until the Congress of Vienna.

In the last half of the 19th century, Boppard became a popular tourist and spa destination. The railway opening in 1859 helped to increase this.

Boppard escaped World War II relatively unscathed although bombs were dropped here.

Boppard became part of the new state of Rhineland-Palatinate after the war. It’s still a tourist magnet and also has light industries such as pharmaceuticals and machinery.

Top 10 Things To Do In Boppard Germany

Here are the best Boppard attractions. Read through and select the ones that fit your interests and timeframe. If you only have one day to visit Boppard tourist attractions, find our one day Boppard places to visit itinerary below.

Note that I sort these things to do in Boppard Germany based on geographical location starting with the Boppard things to do closest to the train station and then working our way further away. The order isn’t based on what I think are the most important attractions.

Altstadt (Old Town)

Saint Severus Church at Marktplatz in Boppard

Boppard’s Old Town is a delight to wander. Its location by the river makes it all the prettier.

Your aim here is to just wander, soaking it all in. It’s the best way to explore this Old Town.

Also look out for sections of Boppard’s Medieval Town Walls. They have been well preserved and add to the Medieval atmosphere.

Weinhaus Heilig Grab (Wine Tavern)

Weinhaus Heilig Grab (Wine Tavern)

Although this is at the top of this list of fun things to do in Boppard, I recommend you visit it last or you may never leave! The oldest wine tavern in Boppard, Weinhaus Heilig Grab is the perfect place to sample the region’s wines. It’s been run by the same family for over 200 years.

You can try the wine inside or in a lovely garden setting outside. You can try some local food as well.

It’s open from 3pm Wednesday to Sunday at the time of publishing.

Römer-Kastell (Roman Fort)

Römer-Kastell (Roman Fort) Boppard

An essential one of the places to visit in Boppard is the ruins of the Roman Fort. This fort still has 55 metres of its original walls still standing from the 4th century.

There are also graves from the Frankish era in the 7th century and a wall panel which shows how the Roman town here (and this fort) used to look.

Römer-Kastell (Roman Fort)

Its 9 metres walls and 28 semi-circular towers still remain and it’s the best preserved Roman fort north of the Alps. It looks more impressive in real life than in photos and is a bigger site than I imagined before visiting.

Entry is free.

Severuskirche (St Severus Church)

Severuskirche (St Severus Church)

On Marktplatz, make sure you take a look at Severuskirche or St Severus Church as you explore the Old Town. This late Romanesque 13th-century church was built on the site of Roman military baths and a 6th century church. It has a long history.

It’s a pretty building and its towers can be seen from many places in Boppard.

Inside Severuskirche (St Severus Church)

Inside, much of the art work, organ and interior have been recently renovated. You can find a big cross with Jesus from 1220, polychrome wall paintings and vaulted ceilings.

It’s open daily from 8am and entry is free.

Rheinallee (Rhine Promenade) Boppard

Bordering the Old Town, Rheinallee is a beautiful pedestrian promenade next to the Rhine River. It’s a great place to take a walk past cafes, hotels, wine taverns and boats. There is parkland in parts as well.

Along here, you can also find a ferry across the Rhine. This can be a great way to get a good photo of Boppard.

Museum Boppard

Museum Boppard

Boppard’s Kurfustliche Schloss or Electoral Castle is rare in the Middle Rhine in that it’s never been destroyed. It started life as a four-storey keep in 1265, and over time, more was built and it became part of the town’s fortifications.

Most castles are up on hilltops. However, this castle wasn’t built for military reasons and instead was built right on the river to ensure it could get a toll from every boat that passed by.

It’s had many lives over the years, including as a hospital during the French Revolution and as a prison in the 19th century. In more recent times, it has been a police station. However, today it is home to the Boppard Museum and the Thonet Museum which honours Boppard’s Michael Thonet, a furniture maker.

If you want to learn more about Boppard, this is the place to head. There is a particular emphasis on the Roman history of Boppard as well as the overall town history and the history of this castle. Unfortunately, most of the information is in German.

Vierseenblick (Four Lakes View) And Sesselbahn (Chairlift)

Vierseenblick (Four Lakes View) And Sesselbahn (Chairlift) Boppard

For some absolutely stunning views, head up to Vierseenblick (Four Lakes View). It’s called this because you have the illusion that there are four lakes instead of one river (take a look at the photo above!).

This is thanks to the horseshoe bend in the Rhine at Boppard.

You have two choices to get up here. Firstly, you can walk. It’s 332 metres up and there is a steep trail that’ll take you there. There are nice views along the way.

Boppard Chairlift

Or the option I prefer is to take the Sesselbahn (chairlift). It’s a lovely 20 minute ride over vineyards, forests and cliffs from the outskirts of Boppard. It covers about 915 metres. It runs during the warmer months from 10am daily.

The views from the chairlift itself is stunning and it’s only about a 7-minute walk at the top to Vierseenblick. You’ll walk straight past another lookout on your way to this which also has great views.

You can find our full guide to taking the Sesselbahn here as well as how to find Vierseenblick. You can also take a bike up and do some mountain biking at the top.

There are also more hiking opportunities at the top.

Burg Rheinfels (Castle)

Burg Rheinfels (Castle)

For an option of things to do around Boppard, head to Burg Rheinfels. This castle is about 15 minutes south along the river.

Built in the 13th century by Count Dieter V of Katzenelnbogen to collect tolls, it was later expanded into a Renaissance castle and then a huge fortress. The size and structure of this castle is fun to explore and it’s one of the largest in the Middle Rhine.

It was well built as well as it’s one of the few places to not be destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War or the Nine Years’ War.

Today, the castle is mostly in ruins and you can walk around and view its subterranean galleries and tunnels. There is a museum on-site as well as the possibility of a guided tour. The tour is necessary to see most of the castle.

To reach here, you need to walk uphill for around 550 metres. Allow plenty of time.

Marktplatz Oberwesel

While Boppard is awesome, why not visit another town while you are in the area?

Oberwesel is a great town to visit on the Rhine River, just a 13-minute train trip or an 18-minute drive from Boppard.

It has a beautiful Old Town with three kilometres of the best preserved Medieval town walls in the Middle Rhine area. It’s also worth checking out Liebfrauenkirche (Church Of Our Lady), Martinskirche (St Martin’s Church) and Schönburg Castle which is home to the Tower Museum.

You can follow our one day itinerary or cut some things out if you only have half a day.

Click here to read our full guide to Oberwesel (including a one-day itinerary).

Views of Bacharach from Postenturm

For another great town to visit in the Rhine Valley, consider Bacharach, maybe the prettiest choice.

Bacharach is just a 23-minute drive or 18-minute train trip away. It has a great Medieval Old Town and a 14th century wall. It’s a fun to wander while soaking it all in. This is my pick for the prettiest town in the Rhine Valley.

While you are in town, it’s worth taking a stroll to Peterskirche (St Peter’s Church) and the Wernerkapelle (old chapel ruins). Also climb up the old Postenturm (tower) surrounded by vines.

Read our full guide to Bacharach here. You’ll also find a one day itinerary there.

Beautiful archway to enter Boppad from the Rhine Promenade

What To Do In Boppard Germany In One Day

Only have one day in Boppard? What a shame! But it’s ok, it’s still worth going to Boppard if you only have one day. Many people visit as a half or full day trip while exploring the Rhine Valley.

With one day, you can do everything in this list except visit all the nearby towns. You can follow my itinerary:

  • Start the day at Burg Rheinfels. Go on a tour if you can to explore the underground tunnels. If not, explore what you can
  • Head to Boppard and start at the Sesselbahn (chairlift) to Vierseenblick. Enjoy the views!
  • Explore Boppard’s Old Town. Start at Museum Boppard to learn more about the town
  • Walk along the Rheinallee and visit Severuskirche and Römer-Kastell. Soak up as much Old Town atmosphere as possible
  • Finish the day at Weinhaus Heilig Grab tasting the local riesling

Best Place To Stay In Boppard

When it comes to where to stay in Boppard, there is a great range of hotels and other accommodation options. You won’t have any problem finding somewhere to stay.

Below, I’ve listed a couple of different places to consider depending on what type of accommodation you are looking for.

BEST – Bellevue Rheinhotel Review

boppard tourist office

If you want to stay in the best hotel in Boppard, consider the Bellevue Rheinhotel. Located by the river in Boppard’s Old Town, it’s hard to imagine a better spot. Built in 1887, this grand hotel has stylish Art Nouveau décor.

The hotel has many facilities including an indoor pool, sauna, gym, massage and beauty treatments. You can also eat at one of their three restaurants (I recommend the riverside terrace, Le Jardin, in summer) or drink at their multiple bars.

Guests also receive a free public transport pass and access to Museum Boppard. Parking is available at an extra cost.

There is a range of single, double, apartments and suite rooms (including family options) so take your pick of what suits best. All give you a stylish and comfortable room with a sitting area. Some rooms have river views.

VALUE – Hotel Ohm Patt Review

Hotel Ohm Patt is a great value accommodation option that you can find on the edge of Boppard’s Old Town close to the train station.

On-site, you can find Weinhaus Patt’s bar and a Mediterranean restaurant. Buffet breakfasts are also available and wifi is too. Free parking is available nearby.

There are single, double and triple rooms available. Rooms are small but come with private bathrooms, TV and somewhere to sit.

How To Get To Boppard

Boppard train station

We travelled to Boppard by hire car which made it very easy to get here. It’s simple to find.

You can hire a car to get you there by clicking here.

Otherwise, train is the easiest way to get here. There is a station in the middle of town which is well hooked up to other towns on the Rhine as well as Koblenz, Mainz and Frankfurt. You can find timetables and all your options here.

The closest airport is in Frankfurt. There are direct trains between Frankfurt Airport and Boppard that take about an hour and a quarter. Find flight options here.

Once in Boppard, we found it easy to explore most of the attractions on foot.

Boppard With Kids

Boppard is a fun place to explore with kids. We visited here with our three kids aged 6 – 12 and they liked exploring the Roman Fort and the chairlift in particular.

As we walked around the Old Town, we made a game out of finding parts of the old walls and towers. I recommend it! Who can find the most sections?

They also found it interesting exploring underneath Burg Rheinfels.

Boppard Town

Situated directly on the bank of the Rhine, this fort looked imposing in Roman times because of its size. You will find the freely accessible site in Kirchgasse, at the corner of Angertstrasse, in the heart of Boppard. It can be viewed at any time.

The Elector’s Castle – Watching over and dominating Boppard

The Elector’s Castle is a medieval stronghold directly on the river bank. Dominating the town with its massive design and mighty tower, it bears witness to the impressive claim to power of its builder, Archbishop Baldwin of Trier. The strong fortifications were designed with various aims in mind: to safeguard the territory, to demonstrate the presence of the ruler to the citizens of the town and, last but not least, to ensure that the coveted duty levied on the Rhine continued to flow into the Elector’s coffers. Like many castles along the Rhine, the castle in Boppard has experienced an eventful history over the centuries – destruction and expansion, and also changes of owner and use. For some 100 years, it has accommodated the town museum with its famous Thonet exhibition.

Taking the Rhine Cycle Route through the Rhine Valley

Boppard is situated directly on the 120-kilometre-long Rhine Cycle Route which follows the Rhine on both banks from north to south. Everywhere the landscape offers you something special to discover.

5 day itinerary of Germany’s Upper Middle Rhine Valley

' src=

With its steep-sided banks lined with pretty half-timbered buildings and topped with medieval castles, it’s no wonder that UNESCO declared the 65 kilometer stretch of the Rhine River from Koblenz to Bingen/Rudesheim a World Heritage Site.

This stretch of the Rhine, known as the Upper Middle Rhine Valley (sometimes just called the Rhein Valley), is jaw-droppingly beautiful and offers plenty for the visitor to see and do.

It’s a popular destination for river cruises and many of Europe’s best tour companies visit the region as well – but it’s also perfectly suited to independent travellers.

Self-drive itinerary of Germany’s Upper Middle Rhine Valley

[ This post may contain compensated links. Please see my  disclosure policy  for more information. ]

The following five-day itinerary of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Germany, is based on my own self-drive road trip and can be easily adapted to suit your own interests.

With the region located very close to Frankfurt, a visit to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a popular day trip from Frankfurt. In fact, it’s only 90 minutes by road from Frankfurt to the Rhine Valley. ( Click here for details of an organised day tour . )

Although I travelled by car, this Rhine Valley itinerary could also be travelled by train.

Cologne is also a good starting point for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.  If you’re travelling with your family, this post on Cologne with kids is worth a read.

Day 1: Frankfurt to Boppard

Distance: 115 kilometres / 90 minutes by car, or 90 minutes by train

After travelling from Frankfurt, arrive in Boppard and check in to your accommodation. I chose an apartment at Bellevue Rhein Hotel, with a balcony overlooking the Rhine, for my four-night stay. Click here for current prices.

Spend the remainder of your day wandering around the town centre and strolling along the riverside promenade.

Wondering where to eat in Boppard?   The Severus Stube serves hearty, traditional German meals including pork knuckle and Wiener schnitzel, whilst the Bellevue Rhein Hotel’s Le Bristol restaurant offers a good a la carte menu featuring some German favourites in a more formal setting.  I enjoyed excellent meals at both restaurants.

Day 2: Exploring Boppard

After a leisurely breakfast, head to the local Tourist Office (on Market Square ) for sightseeing ideas and maps, explore the shops or visit some of the historic buildings in town.

The Bodobrica Roman Fort , a short walk from Market Square, dates back to the fourth century when Boppard was one of the most important Roman settlements on the Middle Rhine. Although only the ruins of this magnificent structure remain today, it is possible to see what an obstacle it was to potential invaders.

With walls up to ten feet thick and boasting twenty horseshoe-shaped towers, the original fortress covered around 4.7 hectares.

The 55 metres of walls that still stand today are considered the best preserved in Germany.

Boppard Germany

The twin-towered St. Severuskirche , a 13th century Catholic church, is worth a visit to admire the frescoes inside.

If you wander along the riverside promenade you’ll notice the Elector’s Castle . Initially serving as a fortress to control the town, then a toll station for traffic on the Rhine, today it houses a museum.

The museum contains an exhibition on the town’s medieval and early modern history as well as an extensive collection of bentwood furniture by Michael Thonet, a Boppard local who invented this popular style of furniture.

To work up an appetite before dinner, why not hire bikes and ride along the path that runs beside the Rhine? Bikes and e-bikes can be hired in town. (See the Tourist Office for details).

TIP: Although it’s touted in Boppard’s tourist brochures as one of the attractions of the area, I’d give the Hunsruckbahn a miss. This is a train that travels over the Hunsruck mountains behind Boppard to Emmelshausen, along a line that passes over two viaducts and through five tunnels and promises ‘spectacular views’.

As the railway line goes through forest for much of the trip, I found the views mostly to be blocked by trees and the trip certainly wasn’t as picturesque as the brochure had described it.

On the return journey from Emmelshausen, we disembarked at Buchholz and planned to follow the Hunsruckbahn Wanderweg (walking path) back to Boppard. The brochure promised some good viewing points of the viaducts along the way but we somehow took a wrong turn and ended up on a scrubby, overgrown path that looked rarely used.

We did find our way back to Boppard but were disappointed with the signage along the path.

Day 3: Explore the towns of Bacharach, Oberwesel and St. Goar

Distance: 55 kilometres Boppard to Bacharach and return by car / Trains also run on this line approximately hourly, stopping in each of the towns mentioned

The banks of the River Rhine are dotted with gorgeous villages watched over by castles that are worth a visit.  Today you’ll be touring the Rhine by car,  heading as far as Bacharach , the furthest village from Boppard that you’ll visit today.

As soon as you enter the village of Bacharach through a gate in the old town walls, you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time.

The village, with a population of just 1800, is wedged between the Rhine River and steep hills planted with grapevines, and is proudly watched over by Burg Stahleck fortress .

Despite its small size, visitors flock to Bacharach to admire the fairytale-like medieval half-timbered buildings which line the cobbled streets. As you wander the streets you almost expect Hansel and Gretel to appear from the ‘gingerbread’ houses!

To enjoy the best views of Bacharach, join the Footpath Stahleckpfad from the Church of St. Peter and climb the one hundred steps to Werner Chapel , a ruined 13th century chapel.

From there the path continues on to Burg Stahleck , once an important castle and fortress and now a Youth Hostel. A visit here is one of the most popular things to do in Bacharach, Germany as the views over the Rhine and the surrounding vineyards from the courtyard are magnificent.

If you are in need of a reviving drink after the steep walk to Burg Stahleck, the café sells drinks and light refreshments.

It’s possible to walk along part of the original town walls and if you follow the signs from the castle to Steeger Tor , you’ll trace the footsteps of Bacharach’s former residents.

Steeger Tor is just one of the numerous original town gates in Bacharach. The path along the town walls continue on from Steeger Tor, beneath steep slopes planted with grapevines. A climb up the Postenturm (tower) rewards you with great views.

Back in Market Square in the village centre, you’ll see why Altes Haus (the ‘Old House’) is one of the Rhine’s most famous half-timbered buildings. Its brightly coloured façade attracts attention and it’s an ideal spot to enjoy a meal or a drink when you visit Bacharach.

Like to stay the night in Bacharach? Click here for accommodation prices in Bacharach.

Altes Haus Bacharach

Your next stop is the village of Oberwesel , just seven kilometres from Bacharach. The town itself is very neat and compact and offers a few sights worthy of a look.

The medieval town wall, with its 16 fortified towers, is the best preserved in the Middle Rhine region. The wall has been restored over the centuries and it’s possible to walk along large sections of it.

For a town with a population of just over 2,000 you’d hardly expect it to be home to a church as magnificent as the Church of Our Lady . The Gothic exterior is impressive enough but it’s inside that the real treasures can be found.

The walls of the Church are adorned with 25 original medieval paintings, and the interior also features the golden altat, one of the oldest high gothic shrine altars in Germany.

Also in town are the ruins of a Franciscan monastery and a Culture Museum, but the highlight for many – and a must-see when you visit Oberwesel – is Schönburg Castle .

Schonburg Castle Germany

The castle sits high on a hill overlooking Oberwesel and is best reached by car. There is a walking path from the town but it quite steep.

Schönburg Castle dates back to the 12th century but was destroyed in the late 17th century. In 1885 a German-American banker fell in love with the ruins and restored the castle to its former glory. Today it houses a Youth Hostel and a hotel and is regularly featured in lists of the 10 best castle hotels in the world.

Guests of the hotel have access to a private garden but anyone visiting the complex can visit the Tower Museum which is housed in an old gate tower. The top level of the tower is an observation deck providing the views that helped Schönburg’s former residents to defend the castle in years gone by.

If you’re looking for a unique place to spend the night with incredible views, this is definitely of the best places to stay along the Rhine River in Germany.

You don’t need to be staying the night at Schönburg Castle to enjoy the gourmet meals on offer. The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner in two beautifully furnished rooms, and on the terrace (weather permitting). (Closed on Mondays and limited opening times mid-October to mid-January.)

Like to spend the night at Schönburg Castle?   Click here to check current prices here.

View from Schonburg Castle

TIP: I highly recommend you make Schönburg Castle your lunch stop today. I enjoyed a sumptuous lunch on the terrace overlooking the Rhine. The meal and the views won’t be forgotten in a hurry!

Just seven kilometres from Oberwesel is the town of St. Goar . Like Bacharach, Oberwesel and Boppard, it sits on the western bank of the Rhine.

St. Goar’s main claim to fame is the Lorelei rock , which is just upstream from the town. The Lorelei is a steep slate rock face on the eastern side of the rivee that has inspired many myths and poems over the years.

The most popular myth comes from Heinrich Heine’s 1824 poem “Die Lorelei”, in which he describes Lorelei as a female siren with golden hair. According to the poem, Lorelei sits on the cliff above the Rhine combing her hair and singing, and unwittingly distracts shipmen, causing them to crash on the rocks.

The Lorelei is best viewed on a Rhine River cruise (see more details below).

Another of St. Goar’s attractions is the Rheinfels Castle . Built in 1245 to protect the town’s tax collectors, the castle is the largest on the Rhine.

The sheer size of the castle and its labyrinth of tunnels and trenches (many of which can still be visited today), saw it withstand many attacks over the centuries. Whilst Schonburg Castle was destroyed in 1689 by Louis XIV’s troops, Rheinfels Castle survived.

Rheinfels castle

A museum, located in the former chapel, showcases the military history and cultural importance of Rheinfels. The castle is open daily from early March until late November. Visit the official website for opening hours.

It’s worth spending a bit of time wandering the town’s medieval streets – where you’ll find plenty of touristy souvenirs – but to me the town centre doesn’t have the same ‘kerb appeal’ as Bacharach or Oberwesel.

End your Rhine road trip for today by returning to Boppard.

The video below was taken as we cruised past St. Goar and St. Goarhausen on our Rhine River cruise.

Day 4: Rhine River Cruise and amazing views of the Rhine Bend

During your stay in Boppard you will have seen plenty of river cruise ships plying the Rhine with many of them docking in town for the night. The views from the river give you a real appreciation of the steep banks on either side and the number of castles (many now in ruins) that were built to defend the waterway.

Two-and-a-half hour Upper Middle Rhine Valley cruises depart a couple of times a day from the dock on Boppard’s promenade, travelling as far as the Lorelei (just past St. Goar) before returning.

This is a leisurely way to see the Middle Rhine Valley from the water.

KD Line ferry

Returning from your cruise, it’s time to see the river from above again and enjoy two of the most spectacular views available.

There are two ways to reach the viewing points at Gedeon’s Corner – either by car or by chairlift. The chairlift ( Sesselbahn in German) starts at the Muhltal station and in 20 minutes you are whisked up over the vineyards to a height of 240 metres.

Just a couple of minutes walk from the top station, you’ll find Gedeon’s Corner viewing point where you get spectacular views of the largest bend on the Rhine.

Four lakes view above Boppard

From Gedeon’s Corner, walk a few more minutes to the Four Lakes View . As the Rhine winds its way through the hills, it appears as four separate lakes rather than a river.

Both viewing points are well signposted and each has a restaurant (with outdoor dining in fine weather) where you can sit and admire the views over a drink or something to eat. A great way to finish your day.

Video: Views of Boppard and the Rhine from Gedeon’s Corner.

Day 5: Boppard to Frankfurt via Kaub and Rüdesheim

Distance: 131 km by car / by train, first travel to Koblenz then to Rüdesheim

Check out of your accommodation and head along the route you travelled on day 3. A few kilometres past Oberwesel you will see the Engelsburg – Kaub ferry crossing point.

The car ferry crosses the Rhine very regularly and within 10 minutes will have you disembarking one the eastern bank at Kaub. The one way fare for a standard sized car and two passengers is around €5.50.

Car ferry to Kaub

Just after leaving Kaub, you get great views of Bacharach perched on the opposite side of the river. There are a couple of lay-bys where you can pull in to take photos but they are a bit difficult to see, so keep your eyes peeled.

Continue on to Rüdesheim , a larger town and one that’s a popular stop for river cruise ships. Although likely to be pretty busy with tourists, Rüdesheim is well worth a visit.

Wander up the old town’s main street, Drosselgasse , which is lined with traditional wooden buildings adorned with pretty wrought iron and gold signs. The narrow cobbled street is barely wide enough for four people to walk side by side, and is home to a range of souvenir shops, eateries and wine cellars.

At the top of Drosselgasse you’ll find Oberstrasse, home to numerous hotels and restaurants, a range of shops – including a Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas Shop – and the starting station for the Seilbahn (cable car) to Niederwalddenkmal .

Drosselgasse Rudesheim

> Click here for a map of Rüdesheim

I highly recommend you catch the cable car and spend some time at Niederwald, a beautiful park above Rüdesheim. Here you can admire the beautiful views over Rüdesheim, the vineyards and the Rhine, and visit the Niederwald-Denkmal.

The Niederwald-Denkmal is a UNESCO-listed monument built in the late 1800s to commemorate the unification of Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. Standing 32 metres tall, the monument can be seen from a long distance and is the landmark of the region.

Niederwalddenkmal

You can either return to Rüdesheim the same way you arrived (by cable car) or take the ‘ring trip’ which includes a chair lift ride over vineyards to Assmannshausen and a boat trip on the Rhine back to Rüdesheim.

If you’re ready for some refreshments before you set off for Frankfurt, stop in at the lovely Rüdesheimer Hof Hotel on Drosselgasse. In good weather you can enjoy a meal or a drink in the courtyard, whilst the restaurant is open year round.

The Rüdesheimer Hof Hotel is also a great choice if you prefer to stay overnight in Rüdesheim. Click here for current prices.

After exploring Rüdesheim, make your way to Frankfurt, just 66 kilometres away, to end your five-day self drive Rhine Valley visit.

More things to do in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley

Visit the rhine castles.

There are a huge number of Rhine Valley castles and you can visit many of these on your Rhine River Itinerary. Aside from Schonberg and Rheinfels Castles mentioned above, a couple of the more popular ones that are open to visitors include Lahnstein Castle and Marksburg Castle.

Keen walkers can hike the Rhine Castles Trail for 200 kilometres between Bingen and Koblenz.

View from Niederwald above Rudesheim

Wine Tasting

The banks on either side of the Rhine provide the perfect growing conditions for grapes, with 65% of the vines producing Riesling.

Local wines are readily available at restaurants and wine bars, in specialty wine shops and cellars.

From Rudesheim, you can enjoy a 1.5 hour Rhine cruise with wine tasting with a local winemaker.   Click here for more information and prices

Day trip to Cologne

The city of Cologne is easily reached on a day trip from Boppard.

Cologne’s impressive cathedral, Kölner Dom , is the main attraction but there are also numerous interesting museums (including a chocolate museum), and an attractive Old Town.

To reach Cologne from Boppard you have the following options:

By car: 123 km / 1 hour 20 minutes

By train: 1 hour 30 minutes

Boppard from the Rhine

How to get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley

As mentioned above, the region is easily accessible by both car and train. Another option is to travel on one of the Rhine River ferry services operated by KD Line ferry which runs from April to October between Mainz and Koblenz and stops at 28 towns and villages along the route.

This ‘hop on hop off’ ferry offers a relaxing way to travel along the Rhine.  Click here for more info and current prices

Where to stay on the Rhine

Where to stay in Rhine valley Germany : I stayed in an apartment at Residence Bellevue, a sister property to Bellevue Rhein Hotel. The apartment block is located about 150 metres from the hotel itself and both properties are located on the river promenade.

Although called an apartment, there were no cooking facilities (just a sink, tea/coffee facilities, fridge) but breakfast was available at the hotel’s restaurant.  Our apartment was quite roomy with a separate bedroom and a balcony overlooking the Rhine. I was very happy to have chosen this as my Boppard accommodation.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved my visit to Germany’s Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The picturesque towns and villages all had their own charm and it was very relaxing watching boats cruise along up and down the Rhine River.

I hope my Rhine Valley itinerary has convinced you to embark on your very own Rhine Valley tour.
