Art of craft

She Slept With a Violin on Her Pillow. Her Dreams Came True in Italy.

As a teenager in South Korea, Ayoung An decided to become a violin maker. Her journey eventually took her to Cremona, Italy, a famed hub for masters like Antonio Stradivari.

Art of Craft is a series about craftspeople whose work rises to the level of art.

When Ayoung An was 8, her parents bought her a violin. She slept with the instrument on the pillow next to her every night.

Two years later, a shop selling musical instruments opened in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, her hometown, and An became a fixture there, pelting the owner with questions. “I think I bothered him a lot,” An, now 32, said.

As a teenager, she decided she would become a violin maker. Eventually, a journey with twists and turns took her to Cremona in northern Italy — a famed hub for violin makers , including masters like Antonio Stradivari , since the 16th century. There, An, a rising star in the violin-making world with international awards under her belt, runs her own workshop .

The violin maker, Ayoung An, her hair drawn in a pony tail. wears a long gray-beige apron as she smiles for a portrait in her studio.

Set on a quiet cobblestone street, An’s studio is bathed in natural light and filled with books and piles of wood chunks that must air dry for five to 10 years before becoming instruments or risk warping. She shares the two-room studio with her husband, Wangsoo Han, who’s also a violin maker.

On a recent Monday, An was hunched over a thick 20-inch piece of wood held in place by two metal clamps. Pressing her body down for leverage, she scraped the wood with a gouge, removing layers, her hands steady and firm. She was forming a curving neck called a “scroll,” one of the later steps of making a violin or cello. On this day, the violin maker was immersed on a commission for a cello, which shares a similar crafting process.

Asked which part of the process is the most crucial, she answered without hesitation: all of them.

“Even very small details can affect the sound.”

Violins like An’s, made in the tradition of Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri, require about two months of work and sell for about 16,000 to 17,000 euros, or $17,500 to $18,500. “I can make a violin in three weeks, but I don’t want to,” An said. “This object is very precious to the person purchasing it.”

An was 17 when she hatched her plan to learn the craft: She would move in with an American family in a Chicago suburb so that she could attend a local high school, master English and eventually study at the Chicago School of Violin Making. There were no such schools in Korea at the time. Her parents, distraught about her moving so far away to pursue an uncertain career path, tried to stop her.

“I didn’t eat for days,” An said. Finally, they gave in. “When I said goodbye to my parents at the airport, they were crying,” she said. “I wasn’t. I was too excited.”

Two years after moving to Illinois, she discovered that one of the best known schools for violin makers, the International School of Violin Making , was actually in Cremona. So in 2011, at age 20, she moved to a new country again.

Cremona was home to some of history’s most famous luthiers, makers of stringed instruments: Stradivari; Andrea Amati , considered “the father of the violin”; and the Guarneri family. For the 160 to 200 violin makers in Cremona today, the sound quality of the masters remains the ultimate goal. “The traditional method is not about experimenting,” An said.

Around the studio, small pots of pigment, for varnishing, sat on shelves and tables alongside jars of powders — ground glass and minerals — for polishing. On a wall were dozens of knives, chisels and saws. Also present: dentist’s tools to scratch the instrument for a more antique look.

photo

An uses rocks or dry pasta “to scratch the instrument so it looks more antique,” she said.

“I believe in beauty in imperfection.”

An is the youngest member of a consortium in Cremona dedicated to upholding violin-making traditions. She is so immersed in the Cremonese method of violin making that, at the suggestion of a mentor, she created an artist’s name, Anna Arietti, to better fit in with Italian culture.

An important moment is when luthiers place their label inside the instrument, called a “baptism.” To make her label, An stamps her ink signature onto a small piece of paper — a browned page from a secondhand book, giving the impression of age. Then, using a traditional homemade mixture of melted bovine skin and rabbit skin as a long-lasting adhesive, she glues the label inside one half of the instrument. She also burns the signature of her Korean name into the instrument with a tiny heated brand.

Afterward, the two halves are sealed together, completing the main body of the instrument. Her Italian artist’s name remains inside, intact as long as the violin is.

“That’s why I wanted to be a violin maker,” An said. “At least one person who plays my violin will remember me 100 or 200 years later.”

Beaver Heritage Museum opens exhibit honoring local World War II casualty

The free display offers visitors a journey through the life and legacy of one of the beaver valley's many unsung heroes of world war ii.

journey of a lifetime ost

BEAVER ― Beaver Area Heritage Museum has unveiled its spring exhibit, "Out of the Unknown: A Tribute to Frank Grdenich."

This free display, open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, now through midyear, offers visitors a journey through the life and legacy of one of the many unsung heroes of World War II.

This story showcases the remarkable life of Grdenich, a Beaver High School graduate. Through a meticulously curated display of compelling images and narratives that surround the actual propeller from Grdenich’s downed P-38 fighter aircraft, visitors will gain insight into the pilot’s extraordinary life journey, from his upbringing in Bridgewater to his ultimate sacrifice on the WWII battlefield.

“Laying my hand on this propeller instantly gave me chills," museum trustee Ed McLaughlin said about his first encounter with the war-torn artifact, donated to the museum by the Grdenich family. "I overwhelmingly agreed that this story must be shared."

On opening day, the Heritage Museum welcomed some of Grdenich's family who came to see the display, including Ryan (his great-nephew), Elaina, and Jonathan Fleming (his great-great niece and nephew), and Barbara Snyder (his niece). Their presence added a deeply personal touch to the exhibit, underscoring the significance of the pilot’s legacy to his family and community.

"Out of the Unknown" is not just an exhibit; it is an exciting adventure that takes you from Beaver High's football field to the deadly skies over the Normandy landing beaches,” McLaughlin said. “Will the family find closure trying to solve a mystery lasting nearly six decades?”

The museum will add to this exhibit throughout the year. Visitors are encouraged to stop by often to see what has been added.

For more information, visit  beaverheritage.org/2024-exhibit-out-of-the-unknown .

"Out of the Unknown" replaces the museum's 2022-23 exhibit "Saint or Sinner? The Complicated Legacy of Senator Matthew Stanley Quay of Beaver, PA," which won multiple awards, including most recently a Special Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums, which comes with a $1,000 check at the April 15 presentation in Harrisburg.

Saguaro catcher welcomed by baseball community after grueling journey from Venezuela

journey of a lifetime ost

It took four months, crossing through several countries—some of it by foot—surviving on one meal a day, seeing people along the way who didn't make it.

Scottsdale Saguaro's 16-year-old sophomore catcher Alain Gudino-Gomez survived the move from Venezuela with his parents and 11-year-old sister to find a better life. A safer life, where he's been lovingly embraced by a baseball community, and catching maybe the best high school pitcher in America.

They got here in November, found an immigration attorney, and went through a process for Gudino-Gomez to be part of the Sabercats' team.

"For my sister and myself, it's to better our lives, so we can study here," Gudino-Gomez said through a translator before a recent game. "At first it was meeting people who spoke Spanish. But it's getting easier. I get along well with everyone."

Early in the season, he had to get used to catching Cam Caminiti, a senior left-hander, who has all of Major League Baseball tracking every pitch he throws this season. In a game early in the season against Deer Valley, in which Caminiti struck out the first 16 batters, one of his 97 mph fastballs broke through the webbing of Gudino-Gomez's glove.

"He was catching me with a kid's glove," Caminiti said. "I broke right through that first game. But I got him a new glove. He's good there. But he's been a huge help for me. It's been tough with the English barrier. But growing up, I went to Pueblo (Elementary School, taking Spanish), so I speak a little bit of Spanish. So I can talk to him a little bit, which is good. He's a great kid. I love having him around."

Gudino-Gomez said he's gotten more comfortable over time catching Caminiti.

With the returning starter out with an injury, he's been asked to handle maybe the best trio of pitchers in the state with Caminiti, Cade Shumard (New Mexico State signee) and Billy Gregory (Grand Canyon), for the top-rated high school baseball team (16-3) in 4A.

Coming into his own on campus

Saguaro coach Joe Muecke said his school was fortunate to have Gudino-Gomez show up on campus.

"We feel like we've helped him as much as he's helped us," Muecke said. "He found a home here. It speaks volumes to our community, the outreach. There's amazing staff here, helping get him acclimated and assimilated in how things go. Every step of the way, watching the community rally around the family makes it special."

But it wasn't easy getting here.

The family set off together on a journey not knowing how they would wind up. They had to go through Central America, including Panama, then spent two months in Mexico, before crossing over into the United States and claiming asylum.

Gudino-Gomez and his family have been helped by a Phoenix bilingual attorney, Rene Siqueiros, who is navigating the family through the immigration process that can take years to resolve.

"There really is no 'quote unquote ' right way to do it, because the immigration laws here are so strict," Siqueiros said. "It's just so broken, as well. For individuals who have legitimate claims for asylum, like Alain and his parents, it's so difficult for them to get some sort of immigration relief."

Sigueiros said the family was detained by immigration officials as part of the process, and placed in deportation proceedings, but they have a right to fight it before an immigration judge.

"That's going to take quite a few years," Siquieros said. "As you can imagine, it's just packed. There's not enough resources as far as judges are involved in adjudicating these cases. It's going to take a few years. But I'm assisting them in that process."

Overcoming the daunting journey to get here

Gudino-Gomez's parents, Lislen and Joel, were able to get work authorization. His mom works as a dog groomer, his father runs a food truck. Both make it out to see him play baseball, supporting him through school. Academics is big for them, and he's succeeding there, too, as well as hitting .310 with 16 RBIs as a switch-hitter for the Sabercats.

But the road to get here was treacherous. They saw others who didn't make it.

"Muchos," Alain's father said.

They went from Venezuela to Columbia to Panama. They would spend five days on foot at times. Other times they would travel by bus, and also by canoe.

They had to cross rivers, mountains and rain forests.

"It was better than getting robbed by being in mountains," Alain's mother said through an interpreter.

They would eat one meal a day to save the food they packed with them. One of those meals would be a can of tuna among them. Alain was always in the lead when they walked for miles and miles.

"It was life or death," said Lislen, who speaks no English, through the interpreter about wanting to leave Venezuela. "There's an opportunity here. It's a better future."

Former Major League Baseball player David Segui, who has two sons playing for Arcadia's baseball team, helped with translating for the parents. Segui said it was the same reason why his dad came over from Cuba when he was a kid.

"It's for a better opportunity," Segui said.

Gudino-Gomez adjusting to English, life here with his teammates

Gudino-Gomez is working on his English. During the two months they spent in Mexico, he studied English, trying to grasp onto words.

"There was a teacher in English class that I took," he said through the translator. "I was building on that listening to new friends."

He said the hardest part of the journey was navigating the rain forests in Panama and Mexico. But he said they were blessed being able to buy food.

In Scottsdale, he became friends with sophomore shortstop Zander Bratspis.

"I try to help him out as much as I can," Bratspis said. "Whenever I'm training, I invite him to our house. I try to be the best friend I can for him, because they came over here not knowing anybody but some of his family. I try to be like family to him."

Dominic Caminiti, Cam's dad, has gotten to know Alain.

"The young man is special," Dominic said. "For Cam, Billy and Cade, Saguaro has got a catcher that will help showcase their skills on the mound. But more importantly a friend for life.

"There are so many beautiful things that happen in baseball that has zero to do with the score or the outcome of the game."
