LIVE REVIEW: Bring Me The Horizon Rage Through Amsterdam On ‘First Love’ Tour

bring me the horizon tour amsterdam

Prior to the release of the new album “AMO”, Bring Me The Horizon made their new era resolute with a massive trek throughout Europe and homeland United Kingdom. On their quest to greatness, the band performed a stellar show in Amsterdam’s AFAS LIVE, as they have back in 2016 following the release of the band’s latest album “That’s The Spirit”. Just like last time, the venue was packed, pit and balcony alike, filled with hopeful fans, unaware but prepared for the immense greatness they were about to witness.

If you’ve ever seen Bring Me The Horizon live, you’re familiar with the band’s supreme strength when it comes to stage presence and sound. Every member of the band brings something unique to the table, and combined on stage, this makes for an exquisite and unmatched performance.

Armed with an incredible discography, ranging from the band’s early deathcore work, to the album “Sempiternal” that put the band on the map for a whole new legion of fans, which has only grown with the release of the 2015 effort “That’s The Spirit”, all the way to the new singles, Bring Me The Horizon can and succesfully have taken their show to the next level.

I’ve seen BMTH perform since the release of Sempiternal, and while the shows I’ve witnessed so far have been incredible to say the very least, the “First Love” tour has taken the crown. The band took the stage and fired directly into “MANTRA”, from which the words were sung back loud and by many. The band continued with a mixture from Sempiternal and That’s The Spirit, with a raging moshpit and the occasional wall of death throughout the evening. A few tracks in, the band showcased their most recent release “wonderful life”, which translated incredibly well in a live capacity. The band sound absolutely massive live, and the new tracks do it justice and then some.

Yesterday was frontman Oliver Sykes’ birthday, and the band decided to celebrate in a very, very special way. Since the release of “Sempiternal” and “That’s The Spirit”, Bring Me The Horizon have spoken out about their old music, saying that looking back at it, they are not particularly proud of the tracks they have written way back when. Well, proud or not, the band decided to treat the old-school fans to a medley of old tracks from the band’s “Suicide Season”, debut album “Count Your Blessings” and even the brutal debut EP “This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For”.

This medley, kicking off with “The Comedown” wasn’t for everyone. but those who appreciated it, went absolutely mayhem, full-knowing these tracks are probably never being played ever again. This medley, consisting of the aforementioned and “(I Used to Make Out With) Medusa”, “Diamonds Aren’t Forever” & “Re: They Have No Reflections” was a real treat for the old-school fans, not to mention quite impressive from the band, given these tracks haven’t been played in forever.

The band resumed their original program with the hits “Can You Feel My Heart”, “Follow You”, the heavy “Antivist” and last but definitely not least an acoustic rendition of “Drown”, taken from “That’s The Spirit”. As the acoustic song came to a close, the band close out the evening with the entire consisting of album opener “Doomed” and the band’s biggest hit to date “Throne”.

LIVE: Bring Me the Horizon Dust Off the Old School Hits in Amsterdam

' src=

Remember 2009? The year that saw  Bring Me the Horizon  emerge from the deepest, darkest depths of Sheffield’s underground scene? Yes? Good. Because for a very brief moment last night (2o November), it felt like Amsterdam had turned into the Leadmill as Oli Sykes and co. dusted off songs which they hadn’t played in nearly a decade. And all of that in honour of Sykes’ 32nd birthday, which fell on the day that Bring Me the Horizon’s First Love tour stopped off at Amsterdam’s sold-out AFAS Live. For a band whose sonic direction has changed so drastically over the years, you’d have been forgiven for assuming that the band simply didn’t  like  their older output. On the contrary, though, it seems.

The night saw Sheffield’s finest hellraisers bring two special guests with them, the first of which – Brighton’s  Yonaka  – looked and sounded ready to take over the world. That’s obviously a very broad compliment which you could apply to any half-decent new band, but Yonaka mean business, and they hit  hard . Fierce frontwoman Theresa Jarvis is a force to be reckoned with onstage, bounding up and down the catwalk with utmost vigour as her and her band treated a packed room to cuts from recent EPs  Teach Me to Fight  (August, featuring the standout title track) and  Creature  (last week). There’s something quite captivating about Yonaka and their ability to keep a room of potential new fans in the palm of their hands, but when you hear their stadium-ready choruses ( Teach Me to Fight ) and gritty riffs you’re sure to be won over in an instant. Second special guests  The Fever 333  are no strangers to going wild (wild being a major understatement), but this shouldn’t be a surprise when you realise that former letlive. vocalist Jason Butler is at the helm. Taking to the stage with a black bag over his head, Butler stood motionless as police recordings played through the PA. Once his band (guitarist Stephen Harrison and drummer Aric Improta) joined the stage, Butler ripped the bag off his head and sprung into full-on maniac mode. Set opener  Burn It  allowed Butler to show Amsterdam what he was made of, ravaging the stage before inevitably making his way down the catwalk and into the crowd. He made it to the sound desk before taking up a spot at the barrier, eventually taking a bucket and pouring it over his head. A normal day at the office for Butler and his men, it seemed. Double-whammy  Made An America  and  We’re Coming In  served as a highlight in the set, setting the bar incredibly high for the rest of the night, at least in terms of energy.

BMTHETAL-40

Where the production for 2016’s  That’s the Spirit  tour centred on big video screens, raised platforms and enthralling visuals, Bring Me the Horizon’s First Love tour is quite the opposite. The stage is, save for a catwalk, as good as bare, with a stripped-back lighting rig relying heavily on strobes for the duration of 75 minutes. Half-tape/half-live opener  I Apologise If You Feel Something  serves as the introduction to new album  amo  (due in January), leading straight into comeback single  Mantra ‘s policing riffs and arena-sized chorus. It was the first track Sykes and co. shared with the world in anticipation of amo, sounding exactly how you’d expect this band to sound anno 2018.  The House of Wolves ‘ blistering screams and pulsating rhythms followed as  Avalanche  and  Go to Hell, For Heaven’s Sake  rounded out a powerful opening salvo. The entire show hits hard from start to finish, something largely down to the band’s choice to focus on recent albums  Sempiternal  and  That’s the Spirit . Both records are filled with bona fide bangers, and nearly all of them passed in quick succession last night. Slow-burning  Sleepwalking  and monstrous  Wonderful Life  preceded the brutal  Shadow Moses  and pounding  Happy Song , making way for a moment in the show which quite literally no one saw coming. As it was Oli Sykes’ 32nd birthday, the band decided to pull out four old-school fan favourites, mashing them up into a concise medley just long enough to make your average  early days  fan drop their jaw to the ground.  The Comedown, (I Used to Make Out With) Medusa, Diamonds Aren’t Forever  and  Re: They Have No Reflections  made up this medley, with the tracks respectively not featuring in the band’s live show since 2011, 2009, 2014 and 2008. Quite the treat for your average old school fan, then.

BMTHETAL-32

A fists-in-the-air double-whammy of  Can You Feel My Heart  and  Follow You  allowed the main set to reach an end with utmost sincerity and vigour, before  Antivist  gave fans an opportunity to thrust their middle fingers into the skies. Although it was noticeable throughout that Sykes occasionally lacks the vocal strength we’ve come to expect from him, he does make up for it with his ability to hype up an entire room (even if a faint backing track pops up). You’ve got to give him that.  Drown  closed out the main set, making way for a brief encore which brought the entire night to a blistering end.  Doomed ‘s haunting undertones and  Throne ‘s hyper-energised outbursts ensured that at least 90% of the room went home satisfied, even if it is a shame that the band are touring Europe with a mere two new songs to their name. Mantra and Wonderful Life are great tracks, but with  amo  not due until January it felt like the tour had come somewhat prematurely for fans who saw a near-identical live show two years ago. No doubt the band will return once amo is out, but when you’re out on a huge tour with just two new songs, the set ends up feeling pretty bare. With the exception of their incredibly rare throwback, of course. Amo is one of 2019’s most anticipated new albums, and it isn’t hard to see why. Criticisms aside, Bring Me the Horizon still do put on a great show all the while proving that there’s nothing wrong with onstage simplicity if the music is as powerful as theirs.

amo is due on 25 January, 2019 via Sony. You can find a gallery from last night’s show below.

BMTH released the “Post Human: Survival Horror” EP album in October 2022. A few months ago, the band announced they are working on about 45 tunes for their upcoming album. Oli Skyes talked about this upcoming album:

“We’re doing lots of gigs hopefully if the world goes alright. Lots of European festivals and we’re going to the States in September. And hopefully a new record . We have [ Bring Me the Horizon ] been working on it for about a year now, we’ve got lots of music we’re just being quite picky about what we want to release. We must have about 45 songs.”

Bring Me the Horizon are a British rock band that was founded by the city of Sheffield in the year 2004. The band includes singer-songwriter Oliver Sykes, guitarist Lee Malia, bassist Matt Kean, drummer Matt Nicholls, and keyboardist Jordan Fish. They are associated with RCA Records globally and Columbia Records only in the United States.

The early work, such as the debut album “Count Your Blessings” is also described as predominantly deathcore. However, through the course of several albums, the group has evolved its sound. And taken a shift in a melodic direction, mixing their metalcore approach with elements of pop, electronica, and hip hip hop music.

They have released 6 studio albums, 2 live albums, 2 compilation albums, one remix album, 2 extended plays (EPs), one demo album, 31 singles, 2 video albums, 36 music videos, and more.

Bring Me The Horizon Stokes Controversy With 'Jesus' Comments: 'This is Beyond Insulting'

Bring Me The Horizon caught some flak for the religious references in one of their recent social media posts.

The band just wrapped up a tour in Australia . The controversial statements came in a post announcing the set times for a show in Brisbane on Saturday, April 20.

"NEX GEN presents [Dreamseeker variant] 2024 OST+ A Post Human Study (phase II)," says the top of the schedule, which references the title of the BMTH's upcoming album .

"If Jesus Christ returns, well just kill that f--ker 2X," the graphic says. "What the hell is f--king wrong with me? I guess there's no remedy."

Christians left lots of angry comments left below the band's recent tweets, which surprised many longtime fans. Frontman Oli Sykes has been knocking organized religion since some of BMTH's earliest releases.

"As both Christian and metalhead, this is beyond insulting," one person said.

"Can’t believe I was so into this band when I was 16. You guys are so talented, yet reduce your self to this. Oli is such a loser," said another.

"Have mercy on them lord," a different commenter said.

"I’m never listening to you guys ever again. Disrespectful, distasteful, and when He does come back you’re going to learn a very hard lesson," someone else said. "Dare you to target a different religion."

Other commenters felt that knocking Christianity is no longer particularly controversial or edgy for a British band in 2024.

BMTH is most popular in the U.K., Australia and other parts of the Anglosphere, which have both historically been dominated by Christianity. But most of these places have seen a dramatic turn away from organized religion in recent decades.

Some fans pointed out that the band would likely garner a lot more attention and hate if they targeted a different religious group.

"Mock Islam if you have b--ls but you don't your just a coward going for low hanging fruit," one person said.

BMTH still had lots of fans coming to their defense.

"Ayo, as a Christian I find this deeply, DEEPLY your own free will and right to artistic freedom," one person said. " Music slaps, their religion none of my business, non issue. Also sorry on behalf of the snowflake Christians that didnt read the bible properly."

Many other fans felt the same way.

"I think most people in this comment section forgot what shock value is," one commenter said.

"Thx for weeding out all the annoying ppl," said another.

"Now all of the snowflake Christians have left it's a lot nicer here," a different fan said.

An exact release date for BMTH's new album hasn't been announced, but it's supposed to come out sometime this year.

This will be Bring Me The Horizon's first full-length studio album since 2020's Post Human: Survival Horror . That record made it to No. 1 on the albums chart in the U.K., where it was also certified gold.

The upcoming album will be Bring Me The Horizon's first release in more than a decade without longtime keyboardist and composer Jordan Fish , who produced the new Architects single " Curse ."

He first appeared on the 2013 LP Sempiternal , which made it to No. 3 on the albums chart in the U.K.

Bring Me The Horizon caught some flak after they made comments about Jesus in a social media post on Saturday, April 20.MEGA

"I think he'd like to see a wall of death": Watch side-stage footage of Sleep Token teaming up with a masked Oli Sykes during Bring Me The Horizon's Brisbane show

Bring Me The Horizon enlisted Sleep Token guitarist IV for guest vocals during a Sempiternal classic live in Brisbane

Bring Me The Horizon/Sleep Token live collab 2024

Sleep Token might be masked and anonymous, but that doesn't mean the band don't have undeniable star quality. Currently wrapping up a massive Australian tour with Bring Me The Horizon , Make Them Suffer and Daine, fans in Brisbane were treated to something extra special when guitarist IV was brought out to provide guest vocals on Sempiternal classic Antivist during BMTH's headline set at Riverstage .

Naturally, fans of both bands have lost their minds over the team-up, flooding the internet with footage of the collab. Even Sleep Token bassist III couldn't resist sharing, putting up some side-stage footage on his Instagram stories (though you'll have to be quick if you want to see it, as footage is removed after 24 hours!). Fans have since taken the footage and uploaded it on their own channels, so you can see how the collab looked from backstage.

The Sleep Token/Bring Me The Horizon love-in looks to go both ways, too. While IV came on to sing the track, it appears BMTH vocalist Oli Sykes took the opportunity to don one of the band's old masks, Sleep Token unveiling new designs as part of their massive Wembley Arena headline performance in December last year.

This will surely fuel speculation for a future studio collab between Sleep Token and Bring Me The Horizon - BMTH certainly have precedent for it - but even if nothing comes about, both bands still have massive plans for the year ahead.

Bring Me The Horizon are currently preparing for the release of Post Human: Nex Gen, the follow-up to 2020's Post-Human: Survival Horror which is expected in summer 2024. The band also have a string of festival appearances planned, including the second edition of Sick New World in Las Vegas next week and appearances at European festivals, kicking off with Poland's Mystic Festival on June 8.

While Sleep Token haven't yet announced a follow-up to their breakout third album Take Me Back To Eden , the news that the band have signed to major label RCA Records suggests we might be getting new music sooner rather than later. That said, the band have an extensive touring regimen ahead for the rest of the year, including a North America tour (where they will also appear at Sick New World) that will end May 28 in Toronto, Canada, before the band return home in November and December for their first arena tour of the UK, ending with a second show at The O2 on December 3.
