What Our Guests Are Saying About Us

The bus driver was kind enough to drop me, my wife, and my mother-in-law with bad knees straight to our hotel after the tour. Great customer service!!! Thank you for a great experience!!!

We took the morning Muir Woods tour and it was great!

Phil was an awesome tour guide - he was very knowledgeable about San Fran and its history; plus, he was funny and kept us entertained. He stopped at the GGB so we could take some awesome photos on a clear, sunny day before getting us to Muir Woods before 9 so we could get in free.

Phil was an awesome tour guide - he was very knowledgeable about San Fran and its history; plus, he was funny and kept us entertained. He stopped at the GGB so we could take some awesome photos on a clear, sunny day before getting us to Muir Woods before 9 so we could get in free. Muir Woods was beautiful - picture and words can do it justice. We had about 1.5 hours there before stopping in Sausalito on the way back for about 30 minutes. While we weren't there long, we were happy with the 30 minutes to bask in the sunlight while sitting on the water (we could have chosen to stay longer and take the ferry back to SF, but we had plans for the afternoon). We can't give Phil enough praise. If we ever make it back to San Fran, we will definitely use Extranomical Tours again - and, we would want Phil to be our guide!

I really enjoyed the half day Muir Woods tour to Sausalito

I really enjoyed the half day Muir Woods tour to Sausalito. Lars was a great guide, friendly and punctual and provided great commentary on the neighborhoods we drove through, across the bridge and on to Muir Woods.

Samantha Colden, Google

I really enjoyed the half day Muir Woods tour to Sausalito. Lars was a great guide, friendly and punctual and provided great commentary on the neighborhoods we drove through, across the bridge and on to Muir Woods. Even though I've been to San Francisco quite a few times, I still learned lots of new things! We even squeezed in a Golden Gate Bridge photo stop! Before we got to Muir Woods, Lars gave us lots of information about the area and when we got there we had almost a full 2 hours to walk around the woods on our own - note though, we each had to pay $10 admission to enter the woods, it's the new Muir rules. After the woods, we went to Sausalito where you could get the ferry or drive back with Lars into the city. If we headed back into the city, we had about 45 minutes in Sausalito which was plenty of time for a quick bite or a stroll up and down the main street. Lars was kind enough to drop me off exactly where I wanted to go in Fisherman's Wharf which was much appreciated. The tour was exactly what I wanted with Muir Woods, a taste of Sausalito and a value added tour guide!

Steve was an awesome tour guide

My husband and I had a great morning tour of The San Francisco area, heading into Muir Woods, Steve was an awesome tour guide. Our last stop was Sausalito, a beautiful city on the water, we had the option to stay there the rest of the afternoon.

Hillary Grabowsk, Google

My husband and I had a great morning tour of The San Francisco area, heading into Muir Woods, Steve was an awesome tour guide. Our last stop was Sausalito, a beautiful city on the water, we had the option to stay there the rest of the afternoon. I recommend that option if your schedule allows. We had a great lunch at Scoma's (recommended by Steve) with views overlooking the bay. Plus there is great shopping in the city. You can take a ferry ride back into San Francisco. We highly recommend the AM Muir Woods Tour, the price was also very reasonable.

Fantastic day with Ross!

Our Muir Woods tour guide was Ross and he picked us up on time, was extremely friendly, and had great tidbits of extra information for us along the way. Ross took us on a "surprise" detour to a lookout point so that we could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline.

Our Muir Woods tour guide was Ross and he picked us up on time, was extremely friendly, and had great tidbits of extra information for us along the way. Ross took us on a "surprise" detour to a lookout point so that we could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. The tour itself was great; we had about 2 hours to ourselves in the woods early in the morning (which was great because by the time we were finishing up, it was becoming crowded), then we headed to Sausalito for lunch with the option to stay longer and take a ferry back on our own. While on the tourbus Ross gave us background and useful information, and then once we were in the woods or in Sausalito we were given our own free time to explore at our leisure.

Our tour guide was excellent.

Very knowledgeable and very amusing. Kept us entertained throughout. Well worth it. I also recommend the ferry trip back from Sausalito to San Francisco. We were lucky to have beautiful weather and excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge. All in all an excellent tour.

Very knowledgeable and very amusing. Kept us entertained throughout. Well worth it. I also recommend the ferry trip back from Sausalito to San Francisco. We were lucky to have beautiful weather and excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge. All in all an excellent tour. The Woods of course speak for themselves! Not enough time spent in them is the only downside of the day.

This was a great tour from beginning to end!

The driver was great and maneuvered the bus through the winding roads of Muir Woods with ease! The tour was organized and very COVID friendly. Beautiful sites and smells of California.

Susan Rigby, TripAdvisor

Wonderful time in Muir Woods!

We had a great time at muir Woods. The bus ride up was great and the return ferry ride back was an excellent way to see the bay!

Lisa Smith, TripAdvisor

Great trip to a gorgeous place.

We didn’t realize the return trip included an hour and 1/2 stop in Sausalito which was plenty of time to walk around and take photos. Also the stop to take pictures of the GG Bridge was outstanding. Jerry, our driver/guide provided interesting commentary and recommendations along the way. All in all, a most enjoyable day trip.

Elizabeth Tanaka, TripAdvisor

Bus ride to Muir Wood with tour guide is great

You learn some history of the places. Muir Woods is beautiful. Sausalito has great places to shop and eat. Ferry ride from Sausalito to SFO was also beautiful. More time in Muir Woods would have been better.

Rizzel Pineda, TripAdvisor

Tour was super easy to book and communicate with staff

My boyfriend and I did the bus tour to Muir woods from the Zaphry hotel and then elected to book a ferry from Sausalito back to Pier 39. We parked in the pier 39 parking structure (cost $60) and then walked to the hotel. Our tour guide, Tammy was amazing!

The Sausalito/San Francisco ferry is super fun and offers not-to-miss photos of Alcatraz and the San Francisco skyline. The return ferry has multiple afternoon departures so you can spend as much time as you like in Sausalito! If you’d like to return via ferry, just add the tickets at check out. Note: you will be responsible for transportation from Pier 41 back to your hotel.

Where do we stop for lunch? How long is the stop?

Sausalito is a picture-perfect spot for lunch and there are several restaurants on the bay’s shore where you can enjoy a meal during the hour-long stop.

WHY VISIT MUIR WOODS

The Muir Woods National Monument is an area just a short scenic drive north of San Francisco in Marin County, California.

The Muir Woods is famous for its beautiful coast redwood trees, which can reach a staggering height of more than 300 feet (92 meters) and live for over 1,000 years!

Muir Woods Redwoods

The tallest tree in Muir Woods is 258 feet (79 meters) tall and an astonishing 1,200 years old . Sure enough, these are among the tallest living things in the entire world!

There are 6 miles (10 km) of trails throughout Muir Woods National Monument, allowing visitors to choose from several different hiking routes.

When does Muir Woods open and close?

Muir Woods is open from 8 am to 5 pm (or 8 pm per the time of year). In every season, it closes at sunset.

What is the best time to visit Muir Woods?

The best time to go to Muir Woods is in the spring or fall, early in the morning or late in the afternoon on weekdays. In other words, the best time to visit Muir Woods is from May to October.

Is Muir Woods a difficult hike?

Muir Woods has trails for people of all skill levels, from easy to intermediate. Basically, the answer to this question depends on the trail you choose.

How long does a Muir Woods tour take place?

The tour itself takes 2 hours for a skilled person. But you must be prepared to spend 3 to 5 hours on this excursion, including your travel to and from Muir Woods.

Can you go to Muir Woods without reservation?

Technically, yes. If you arrive by foot, bicycle, or tour bus, you won't need to make a reservation. However, if you plan to drive there yourself, you will need to reserve a spot.

If you drive there without a reservation, you will have to return. At Muir Woods, you must make parking and/or bus service reservations.

The reason for this is that the national park has become much more popular in recent years and there is limited parking available. Due to safety concerns, they now require reservations to be made in advance for all vehicles.

Can you take an Uber to Muir Woods?

It is possible to take an Uber to Muir Woods, but it can be expensive (about $50 to $80 one-way from San Francisco) and hard to find a ride back.

We recommend a tour bus or other accommodations instead.

Muir Woods or Redwood National Forest?

Both the Muir Woods and the Redwood National Forest are beautiful national parks in the state of California.

The two are often confused as both feature old-growth coastal redwood forests full of these massive, ancient 1,000-year-old trees ( Sequoia sempervirens).

Muir Woods Tours

However, Muir Woods is much closer to San Francisco and receives a greater number of annual visitors.

Redwood National Forest is more than 300 miles north of San Francisco, is much larger, and is much less visited.

So, which should you choose to visit during your trip to California? It depends on how much time you have.

Redwoods National Forest

It's 300 miles (483 km) north of San Francisco, so best for those who have the time to dedicate a full day to travel to and from the forest.

It's much larger and quieter, thus ideal for those truly looking for an escape.

A beautiful forest that is just a 40-minute drive from San Francisco. Smaller than Redwoods National Forest, but features the same type of trees.

GUIDED TOURS OF MUIR WOODS

Each of the following companies offers tours to Muir Woods.

San Francisco Skyline Sightseeing, Gray Line, and Tower Tours lead combination tours that include tours of Sausalito, Sonoma, and/or highlights of San Francisco.

Muir Woods Tour City Sightseeing

Most tour companies spend between 1.5 to 2 hours in the forest.

As noted below, some companies (such as Skyline Sightseeing and Gray Line) are more transportation services rather than tours, as there is limited guided commentary off of the coach.

Prices range from $50 to over $100 per adult, depending on what other activities are combined with the trip to Muir Woods.

Skyline Sightseeing Tours (formerly City Sightseeing)

Skyline Sightseeing Tours are classic hop-off-hop-on bus tours that take visitors to several different tourist destinations.

They offer several options that include Muir Woods, including the option to add-on a return ferry to San Francisco (Pier 41), for those who want to spend more time in Sausalito then is included in the tour.

While on the ferry, you'll pass by Alcatraz Island and get a chance to see this historic site from afar. You'll also enjoy excellent views of the waterfront around Fisherman's Wharf!

This outfit offers complimentary hotel pickup.

Tours to Muir Woods National Monument with Skyline Sightseeing receive generally positive reviews, with many guests praising the ease of transportation.

  • (2) San Francisco City Tour & Muir Woods
  • (3) Muir Woods, Sausalito, and Bay Cruise.

As each of these tours to Muir Woods includes a visit to a second location, time is inevitably limited at each stop.

You can expect the tour of San Francisco to include several stops in the Fisherman's Wharf area, Chinatown, and beyond!

The seaside town of Sausalito is a great place to visit if you want to find some of the best boutiques, cafes, and restaurants in the Bay Area.

All tours include admission to Muir Woods and hotel pick-up/drop-off during the morning tour.

The Gray Line Tour reviews are very positive, as many compliment the quality of the guides and the ease of transportation.

  • $139 - Adult | $96 Child (5-11) | Free for under 5
  • Departs daily at 8:40 am

Muir Woods, Sausalito, and Bay Cruise

Finally, guests may take the Muir Woods, Sausalito, and Bay Cruise, which allows visitors to enjoy three sceneries: the woods, the water, and the quaint city of Sausalito.

  • $110 Adult | $80 Child (5-11) | Free for under 5
  • Departs daily at various times (5.5-hour tour)

Tower Tours

In addition to their many other tours, Tower Tours also offers a tour of Muir Woods, which departs 3x daily and can be combined with other attractions:

  • (1) Muir Woods Tour
  • (2) Muir Woods Tour + Sausalito Ferry
  • (3) Muir Woods Tours + Aquarium of the Bay
  • (4) and Muir Woods Tour + Golden Gate Bay Cruise.

The Muir Woods Tour by Tower Tours is a highly-rated tour with excellent reviews.

Extranomical Tours

Extranomical has perhaps the largest selection of tours of any bus company in the San Francisco Bay Area.

They offer several trips to Muir Woods, most of which are combined with other tourist destinations such as Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, and Sausalito.

Guests are allowed up to 2 hours to explore Muir Woods on their own, during which time they can also buy lunch or hike a particular trail.

Their tours include free pick-up and drop-off at almost any hotel in San Francisco, making the door-to-door service very convenient.

With a 4 ½ star rating on TripAdvisor and a 4-star rating on Yelp, it’s safe to say that most guests of Extranomical Tours have a great time.

Most of the negative reviews seem to be centered around scheduling conflicts, but sometimes it’s impossible to foresee issues such as these.

If the only issues with this service are a few random, unforeseen problems with their schedule, that’s a pretty good sign.

Almost every other similar service has received complaints about the bus either being late or broken, so it’s worth noting that Extranomical does not appear to have these problems.

Tom Martell's Famous Muir Woods Tours

Tom Martell's Famous Muir Woods Tours is a small company owned and run by Tom Martell, a naturist and experienced Muir Woods guide.

Tom's tours are fully escorted and aim to inform guests about the flora and fauna of the area, the Redwoods themselves, Indian customs, park and local history, and folklore.

Tom promises that he is "here to give you a glimpse into the life of the forest, not to steer you to the gift shop or hurry you along."

The tour covers 2-4 miles and includes water, snacks, fruit juice, and complimentary pick-up at your San Francisco hotel and drop-off at the Sausalito Ferry.

NOTE: Tom is currently running private tours only .

Inside the redwood forest at california’s muir woods.

Entrance to Muir Woods National Monument

An excellent reason to visit the Bay Area of California is to visit Muir Woods National Monument . What makes Muir Woods so special and different is its acres of giant, ancient redwood trees.

Muir Woods can make you humble. It’s not just the size of these enormous trees, at nearly 300 feet tall, that is difficult to document in a photograph. Or how the trees soar into space like a green cathedral.

Personally, I find visiting Muir Woods a spiritual, meditative experience. Indeed the sign at Cathedral Grove tells visitors to “enter quietly.” Many logs have a green coat of moss, while ferns and other verdant bushes cover the ground.

There are six miles of hiking trails at Muir Woods, named for pioneering naturalist and ‘father of the National Parks’ John Muir . The main trail is only about a mile. Beginning at the visitor’s center, it circles Redwood Creek on both sides of the stream.

The forest floor is fairly flat. Wood decking makes much of the loop trail accessible to wheelchair users and strollers, both of which I saw on my recent visit.

Some of the trees are split on the bottom, making for selfies “inside the redwood.” The history of Muir Woods is also interesting, both for the struggle to preserve it and because the founding members of the UN met there on May 19, 1945. The meeting was held “to honor the memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, thirty-first President of the United States, Chief Architect of the United Nations and apostle of lasting peace for all mankind.” FDR had died of a stroke in April 1945.

Yet the 80 years since the end of World War II and the conference are but a blip in the life of a redwood. Individual redwood trees are far older than the 250-year-old United States in which they reside. Indeed, a slice of one redwood tree shows it was already 150 years old when William the Conqueror won the battle of Hastings in 1066. Another, which pre-dates the building of cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde in 1100, was born in 909AD.

Nonetheless, the redwood was regarded as a resource. According to a guide, 96% of California’s redwoods were cut down from the 19th century to today.

What makes redwood lumber so beloved? Builders appreciated the remarkably strong, gorgeous wood that launched a million California decks. At my first home in West Hollywood, I installed a redwood deck. It was beautiful, and the tannins in the redwood made it resistant to bugs.

Now, redwood is hard to find at your local Home Depot. But find the towering redwoods at Muir Woods you will.

Muir Woods National Monument remains home to one of the largest surviving groups of the biggest trees on earth.

MILL VALLEY, CA - AUGUST 20: Coastal Redwood trees stand at Muir Woods National Monument on August ... [+] 20, 2013 in Mill Valley, California. A four-year study by the Save the Redwoods League called "the Redwoods and Climate Change Initiative" found that due to changing environmental conditions, California's coast redwoods and giant sequoias are experiencing an unprecedented growth surge and have produced more wood over the past century than any other time in their lives. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

These are the coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) .The coastal redwoods grow from the Central California coast north into Oregon. They grow best in moderate temperatures and near or in streams. Steelhead trout and coho salmon swim into the streams when they swell with rain to spawn.

Muir Woods and Redwood National Park, also in California, remains home to some of earth’s tallest living things. The largest tree at Redwood National Park measures 379 feet tall with a 22-foot diameter. Its bark alone is 12 inches thick.

While the redwoods at Muir Woods are not quite as tall, they still reach an awe-inspiring height. The tallest at Muir is over 258 high, the height of a 23-story building.

At up to 2000 years old, the coast redwoods are also among the oldest living things on earth, although smaller Bristlecone pines are believed to live more than 4700 years. The mature redwoods at Muir range in age from 500 to perhaps 1000 years old.

The redwoods of Muir Woods have survived fires and floods, as well as the logging that took down so many of their brethren.

Muir Woods National Monument

Admission to the park is $15. You’ll need to make a reservation for parking. Like the redwoods, Muir Woods was in danger of being loved to death, so the National Parks Service instituted its first reservation system there.

Muir Woods is about an hour from San Francisco by rental car or tour bus. It’s a drive along a winding road after one crosses the Golden Gate. The journey is part of the destination, as the nearby headlands provide a spectacular view of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The reservation system helps, but the roads to Muir Woods can be crowded with cars and bikes. Bus tours that will pick you up from San Francisco and leave the driving to them are available from TripAdvisor , Viator and many others. The price is often less than $100 per person, including admission.

Parking and shuttle reservations can be made here . If you choose not to drive but to take the ferry to Larkspur Landing or the Sausalito Ferry Terminal, you don’t have to pay for parking but will need shuttle reservations both ways.

Muir Woods National Monument is located on the Pacific coast of southwestern Marin County, ... [+] California, north of San Francisco and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

bus tour to muir woods

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
