Dolphins & Turtles

We had a surprise interaction with a pod of spinner dolphins. It was so unexpected but such a highlight to see them swimming in our wake.

Snorkeling made easy!

Molokini was beautiful. Turtle Town had murky water. Did not even stop but we spent extra time at Molokini. Got in some whale watching too and had two whales swim right up to the boat. Great staff, very helpful and co ... urteous.

From the time you board the Calypso Triple-deck Catamaran, you will notice its quality and beauty, not to mention the friendly crew. Choose your favorite spot. There are three decks to choose from. Keep in mind you may want to be in the shade. If not, get that sunscreen on and enjoy the views in the front areas.

As you ride the beautiful blue waters you will witness the awesome views of Mount Haleakala, the House of the Sun, to your left (port side). Straight ahead will be Molokini and beyond it, Kahoolawe Island. Behind you catch a glance of the West Maui Mountains. If you are on Maui between November and April, you should keep your eyes open for our seasonal residents, the Humpback Whales. A continental-style breakfast consisting of assorted pastries, and fruits will also be served during your ride, and a snorkeling lesson will also take place for those who have never snorkeled or would like a “refresher”.

Molokini was formed by volcanic eruptions, which formed the shape of a horseshoe. The underwater visibility is incredible and the water feels fairly warm. Molokini is a State Marinelife and Bird Conservation District boasting over 250 ocean species. Some of them are endemic to the Hawaii waters and found nowhere else on earth. While snorkeling, you will enjoy over 100 feet of visibility and get to explorer one of the world’s most popular snorkeling sites. Getting in and out of the water is a breeze, as Calypso offers very spacious and comfortable steps. The friendly crew will also be available to assist you with floatation devices and anything else you might need to have the best time snorkeling in Molokini Crater! When returning to the boat you can take a nice freshwater shower to wash out the saltwater in preparation for your ride to your second snorkeling spot.

Next stop: Turtle Town, a beautiful outer reef located near Maluaka Beach, in Makena. The area is secluded from the trade winds and is home to the Honu, or Hawaiian Sea Turtles, who are frequently spotted lining up for a free cleaning offered by reef tropical fish in the area. It’s also called “turtle carwash”! A deli-style lunch will be served during your Turtle Town stop. Once you are no longer returning to the water, you will have the opportunity to purchase a beer or mai-tai ($3 each) to sip and enjoy on your ride back to Maalaea Harbor.

On your ride back to the harbor, keep your eyes open for turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and of course, our famous Humpback whales (in season). Your tour should be back at Maalaea harbor before 1 pm.

We took the cruise Jan. 23rd to celebrate my girl friends 70th birthday. We lined up early and Meagan was the photographer and very knowledgeable and friendly. Danielle, the tour guide, assisted with our check in and through out the entire cruise. The capt. came out and gave instructions and warned about the rough water but stated he would make things as calm as possible. The entire crew was enthusiastic and friendly throughout the entire cruise. We had mahi mahi and prime rib for dinner. Very good. The entertainer on board sang happy birthday to my girlfriend. We even saw whales next to the boat. I would recommend this sunset dinner cruise to anyone. It's an experience my girlfriend will treasure. Larry G Washington State

We are happy to help you create lasting memories for your girlfriend's birthday celebration on our Calypso dinner cruise! A whale sighting is always a special treat.

The prime rib was not edible! The food was not hot, Luke warm at best. I feel sorry for the staff because it seemed like they tried really hard to make it better but there was no helping this food. The captain let us rock and roll in relatively calm seas on the way out, as if he was trying to conserve fuel by not planeing the boat. On the contrary when returning to shore he motored up a few nots and we had a smooth ride back. In summary the sunset was nice, but I guess if you go on a dinner cruise you at least want Denny's or hamburger quality. This charter needs to either fire there food services or stop offering dinner cruises and just call it sunset cruise. By the way, it seemed like the Captain was either tired or just didn't care about connecting or informing his passengers about the ride. Although I give him credit for the one whale sighting, which was the highlight of the trip.

Just completed Calypso dinner cruise, couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of the dinner the mahi was incredible. The crew couldn't have been any nicer, it was a great evening.

This was a great dinner cruise! The food was delicious and plenty of it. Five different dinner choices and our group loved them all. Good choices of drinks also. The service was great. Always making sure you had everything you needed. There was also good entertainment. I would definitely do this cruise again!

It was a nice experience , however for 250$ for two people I expected a lot more for the money . I was sold by a event coordinator he said it was a luxury dinner with live music , which def wasn't live music and basic dinner . Food was okay, was a nice experience but don't think I'd be back, staff was friendly and nice .

Food not edible! Served cold and over cooked! Captain not friendly! Our sever G was amazing 5 stars for him! Music was great! Not much whale activity due to captain not following them! 2 other boats out amazing whale show as we know both captains! This was a Christmas present from our children and I truly wish we just would not have gone! We are a local family and will never recommend this dinner cruise!

The food was horrible. Two glasses of warm water and a salad with soggy croutons were on all the tables. The bread stick we didn't dare eat. Hard, cold, and looked like fake food for child play. My pasta was so dry I asked for some marinara sauce on the side. The waiter said they didn't have any pasta sauce onboard so I pushed my plate away. It was too dry to choke down. The music was terrible and sleepy time music. Save your money go eat at Mama's Fish house. Two stars are for the staff 0 stars for food and ambience. The views will just as great on a different cruise.

I booked this event for my family for the cruise on 10/16/21 to celebrate my brother's. I had gone to a sunset dinner cruise in Oahu and was thinking this would be somewhat the same, and to my disappointment, it wasn't at all. First off, the boarding experience should be improved. The staff had us line up at the side of the boat, and said we would check in a half hour early and board promptly at 5pm. Due to this, several of us were standing around by 4:30pm, but the check in process started late. We then also boarded late...around 5:15pm'ish. Once inside, the views around the boat were not too good. The only clear view was on the top outside deck. The food was also just okay for me. The staff was friendly, but didn't seem to really have anything to engage the guests. There was also nothing special they added for celebrations, (birthdays, anniversaries, etc). In the future, I would suggest to book any dinner cruises in Oahu. The cruises there have more of an all you can eat crab leg buffet style cruise with a polynesian dance show and dancing for the guests as well. They also allow add-on's like a bottle of wine, or a cake to celebrate any special occasions.

We appreciate your review. All cruises are different. Our dinner cruise is very popular but we will consider your suggestions for special events! Mahalo for taking time to review.

So beautiful! Make sure you get there a little early to pay parking at the dock. The parking pay machines are a little finicky so bring cash just in case it decides not to take card that day lol. They have you wait in a line before boarding, and a photographer takes your picture in front of the boat (they are printed and sold at the end after you get off the boat - my husband and I decided not to purchase the pictures). The seats are assigned (as of November 2021), not sure if this was because of COVID or if that was how it always has been, but I am so glad they were pre-assigned. It made the entire boarding process and overall experience very seamless. My husband and I were seated toward the front of the boat and shortly after, a waitress came by to take our drink orders. They give you drink tickets to use for alcoholic beverages. Pina coladas were yummy! The meal included bread, salad, mahi mahi, mashed potatoes, veggies, and dessert (choice of cheesecake and chocolate cake). The food was good and very filling! The servers forgot us from time to time, we had to remind them about our drinks a couple times. It's the ocean breeze, live music, and sunset that really sell this cruise for me. It was all so beautiful and romantic! Also, make sure to bring a light sweater/jacket, it got chilly on the way back to the dock. This was such a wonderful experience for my husband and I, a great way to kick off our Maui vacation. I would definitely recommend this excursion!

Great whale watching and sunset dinner cruise. Easy check-in, with seating on three levels. We sat on the middle deck, open air, and near the live entertainment-Tim McDill, playing guitar and singing. What a great voice! Two drinks per person were included. Generous wine pours and a good selection of canned beers. Our friends tried the cocktails, but they were not really good. The Dark and Stormy did not have real ginger beer (that's how they should be made) but they used several different flavors from the soft drink dispenser. Yuck. The tequila mixes were bad, too. Get cocktails at a good bar or restaurant, not on a boat! Our friendly server replaced the Stormy with a glass of Chardonnay-good job! Salad and a dinner roll, followed by the entree and then brownies for dessert. I thought the ribs were the best dinner choice. My wife tried them and wished she had ordered them, too. Prime rib, fish and chicken were all OK. Saw lots of whales, great sunset, and got back to Maalea Harbor in the dusk. Big, comfortable boat. Our favorite dinner cruise on Maui.

Tim McDill provided the musical entertainment. Great song selection, good guitar playing, and what a voice!

Ribs with included rice and steamed veggies. We all agreed that the ribs were the best dinner choice.

Description

Calypso is a spacious, stable 65' foot powered catamaran custom built here in Hawaii to provide full-featured snorkeling and dinner cruises. With its three decks, all-table seating, and indoor/outdoor design, this vessel is a great choice for a sunset dinner cruise. The twin hull design of the catamaran allows it to cut through the waves while the center of the vessel is held above the surface. A smooth, fast ride is the result! Comfortable table seating is available for everyone, which is important in a true sit-down dinner cruise! An attentive staff provides all the service you need during your dining experience.

This dinner cruise is offered daily, with later afternoon / early evening departure from Maalaea Harbor, which is centrally located on Maui. The relaxing two-hour excursion gives you time to enjoy a delicious meal, explore the incredible craft, listen to great island-style music, and watch the sun go down from one of the many vantage points available on board. Many of the tables have full-on ocean views, and you are free to explore all three decks of the vessel throughout the cruise.

• Hawaiian Slow Roasted Prime Rib: Hand carved to order by onboard chef, served with horseradish, au jus & other condiments available.
• Baby Back Ribs: Aaward winning, meaty, mouthwatering ribs are slow smoked in a rotisserie smoker over kiawe and guava wood, and basted in homemade sweet & tangy BBQ sauce sealing in the moisture and adding a tender crispy "bark" to the outside!
• Smoked Chicken: Plump chickens are seasoned or "rubbed" with our homemade dry rub and using a custom stand are placed in a rotisserie smokerusing a combination of Kiawe and guava wood until the skin is crispy golden brown and the chicken swells with moisture steaming from inside.
• Local Island Fish: Delicious local island fish (usually Mahi-Mahi or Ono) served with fresh lemon, & savory caper beurre blanc sauce.
• Vegetarian Option: Cheese Tortellini w/ sautéed green/red peppers & served with a creamy alfredo sauce.

All Options Include: Caesar Salad with homemade croutons and fresh shaved parmesan cheese, Hawaiian dinner rolls with butter, and your choice of either Chocolate Cake or New York Style Cheesecake for dessert.

Check In: 4:30pm in winter and 5:00pm in summer at Maalaea Harbor slip #76 & #78. This is the boat harbor in Central Maui just behind the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium along Highway 30. Parking is available for a small fee and can be paid using credit card or using an app on your phone. Allow ample time for parking / arranging payment.

Infants (3 and under): One free infant per adult. Additional infants are charged the child rate. Free infants do not receive a meal. If you'd like a meal for them, reserve them as a paying child rather than a free infant.

Reservations: Advanced reservations required and we recommend booking this a month or more before your arrival. This event is "RESERVE NOW PAY LATER"; we need a credit card on file to finalize your reservation but we do not charge you for this reservation until a few days before the beginning of your vacation!

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: At least 48 hours before the start of the event. All tours go out rain or shine.

Note: Calypso is one of the few vessels that is wheelchair accessible for access to the lower deck. Please note that this allows a wheelchair guest to go along to enjoy the cruise with access to lower deck tables and rest rooms, but they will not be able to access upper decks.

My wife and I enjoyed an evening aboard Calyspo recently; several things about this cruise make it stand out from others. First, I have been on lots of sunset cruises where you have to hold onto your plate while you eat dinner. Juggling a plate with one hand, and a drink with another hand, while holding a fork with a third hand and a knife with a fourth hand so you can cut a piece of meat just doesn't work for most people I know (who were born with only two hands). On board Calypso EVERY guest gets a comfortable seat at a table, so you don't have to worry about the gymnastics involved on other boats!

We also really liked the food ... one of us had the prime rib and the other had the smoked chicken. Both were really good entrees ... the first course is a Caesar salad with Hawaiian rolls and butter, the second course is your choice of entree served typically with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetable medley, and for a dessert coarse you get your choice of Chocolate Cake or New York Style Cheesecake. There is nothing FANCY about the food, but IT IS GOOD QUALITY and we both really enjoyed dinner!

There are plenty of cocktail options and your dinner cruise includes the first two alcoholic beverages for free ... additional drinks were reasonably priced at $5 ... hey, I've been gouged $24 for a Mai Tai at a resort hotel, so that's not a bad deal here on Calypso!

Many (most) tables have excellent views of the ocean ... a few don't ... so we do advise you to arrive early to checkin so you have the best selection of tables when you board. The very best views are of course on the open-air top deck, but it's pretty windy up there on most nights. It's a great place to hang out for a drink while you are watching the sunset, but maybe not the best place to sit during dinner. There are open-air tables with great views at the bow on both the middle deck and lower deck, and there are tables with really good views at the stern of the boat on the middle deck. This is probably the BEST place to sit for a compromise between best views and most sheltered conditions for dining.

Your Calypso sunset dinner cruise includes two free drinks, and once the catamaran has motored out of the harbor, you can order alcohol. Friendly crew members tend the bar, and they can bring you Mai-Tais, blended drinks, wine and beer.

When it’s time for the delicious main meal enjoy  juicy prime rib. Mahi mahi, teriyaki chicken, steamed vegetables, roasted potatoes, and chocolate cake is also ready for you to eat. While you chow down, the crew comes by often to take things out of your way, ensuring that no trash ends up in the ocean. There is plenty of time to gaze at the islands of Kaho’olawe and Lana’i in the distance – not to mention the epic snorkeling site, Molokini Crater. Closer to the boat, you’ll see the Kahalawai Mountains of west Maui as they stretch toward the sky. The back of the boat consists of multiple flights of stairs descending into the water, ten in all. This is such a huge improvement over their competitors. Most boats only have two points of entry which can cause a bottleneck. No more waiting for the fun. The wide stairs and railings descend beneath the surface making it a breeze to get in and out.  There are two jump off platforms if you are in a big hurry.

The Calypso snorkeling crew lays out an incredible breakfast spread for the boat ride from Maalaea Harbor out to Molokini. Most boats have pastries only. The Calypso does it right with a hearty breakfast with eggs, ham, cinnamon rolls, donuts, coffee, juice, and fresh fruit. This feast is perfect for getting your energy levels up for some Molokini snorkeling.

From mid-November to mid-April you can watch Humpback Whales.

On the way to Molokini Crater, the crew will come around with top quality snorkel gear and fins for everyone. They also offer snorkel instruction to new snorkelers and those wanting a bit of a refresher.

You will be stunned by the crystal clear blue water as you pull into Molokini Crater for over an hour of snorkeling. Molokini Crater is by far the best snorkel site in all of the Hawaiian Islands and has been a marine preserve conservation zone since the 1970’s. The water clarity is consistently a mind-boggling 150 feet.

At both snorkel sites, two crew members acting as lifeguards enter the water on kayaks to oversee the group and offer assistance . You will have over an hour to explore one of the top snorkel sites on earth in a safe and welcoming environment.

Your second snorkeling sight of the day is Turtle Town. Turtle Town is a stunning snorkeling site with vibrant coral reefs and abundant fish but the star of the show here is the huge friendly Hawaiian green sea turtles. These gentle giants have swum with thousands of visitors and are used to being treated like celebrities.

They know they’re not on the menu and that you’re not allowed to harass them so as long as you don’t splash around like a chicken you will get to enjoy close encounters with lots of these amazing ancient creatures.

While at Turtle Town the crew serves you a mouth-watering BBQ lunch with vegetarian options included in your ticket price. Soft drinks and water are available for free throughout the day. Mai tais, rum and cokes, and beer and wine are available for purchase aboard the boat. The mai tais go down very nice after a few hours of snorkeling.

On the way back in the captain takes you by LaPerouse Bay to check for spinner dolphins.  You will get to encounter a remote and barren part of Maui formed by our most recent lava flow some 200 years ago. The crew serves chocolate chip cookies and adult beverages on the ride back in.

Calypso – Maui’s Newest Molokini Snorkeling Tour

In the tale of The Odyssey from Greek mythology, the goddess Calypso falls in love with the protagonist Odysseus. Employing enchanting songs, she manages to keep him by her side for an extended period, aspiring to make him her eternal husband. Despite her efforts, she is unable to win Odysseus’ genuine love, conceding and allowing him to resume his journey home. On the island of Maui there is a boat named after Calypso which is similarly charming, offering enchanting ocean views and the immortality of everlasting memories. The Calypso Maui experience kicks off in the morning at Ma’alaea harbor. Following a simple check-in, you walk right up the ramp and board the boat. With three floors providing plenty of seating, enjoy breakfast platters at the bar to fuel up for the upcoming journey. A short safety briefing later and the boat sets sail.

Certainly, on a snorkel cruise, you’ll be needing snorkel gear. You can remain comfortably seated, though, as the diligent Calypso crew is on the job, providing high-quality masks, snorkels, and fins suitable for any shoe size. If desired, they can also arrange a wetsuit for you at a nominal cost. Everything is handled, allowing you to unwind and appreciate the beautiful scenery of the islands Maui, Kaho’olawe, and of course the destination islet Molokini.

The Molokini islet, a small crescent-shaped landmass, marks the summit of a long extinct volcano. Submerged at the end of the last ice age due to rising water levels, the crater became a thriving hub of marine life. After thousands of years, it is now a perfect shelter for snorkelers and divers. The volcanic rock walls not only offer protection from waves and currents but also create a serene environment for swimming, resembling an underwater garden where over 250 species of fish reside.

Snorkeling from the Calypso is made easy. The dive step turns the entire rear section of the boat into a convenient staircase down to the water. This design allows multiple people to enter or exit simultaneously, eliminating long waiting lines on the boat and in the water.

However, Calypso’s not done yet. The vessel then makes its way to a second snorkel spot, a small area off the coast of southern Maui affectionately known as Turtle Town, named after its inhabitants. Green Sea Turtles , growing 3-4 feet long, share this region. Although they spend the majority of their lives submerged, these turtles, like humans, breathe oxygen. While at rest, they can remain underwater for several hours, but when active, they surface every 4-5 minutes, offering you a prime opportunity to witness these Hawaiian symbols of good luck.

The second destination also brings a well-timed lunch break, just as your appetite is likely to have been stirred. Choose between teriyaki chicken or Hawaiian-style slow-cooked kalua pork, conveniently crafted into sandwiches along with traditional sides. So glad our family did this! We swam along with schools of beautiful fish and the majestic turtles. The turtles were absolutely incredible to watch in their natural habitat!! The gear was quality and the crew totally made the experience! Relaxing and floating was so amazingly peaceful. One of the lesser expensive excursions, and ended up being one of the best highlights for our family of 4, with two teens!

We have been in Maui for 2 weeks, and this was by far my favorite excursion, and the cheapest too! The crew was so awesome! I felt safe because they come in water with you. We saw so many turtles and sharks (reef sharks but I’d say 4ft long).The drinks were yummy (mai tai)! After snorkeling, we jumped off the boat and we did the slide as well. My kids are 12 & 17….they had a great time. I HIGHLY recommend this trip!

We booked a sunset cruise to celebrate our daughter's birthday and it was everything we wanted and more! The captain and crew were phenomenal and went above and beyond to give us a first class experience. Food was great, drinks were flowing, and the live music was the icing on the cake. The captain let our daughter sit behind the wheel for a little bit which was a special experience for her. We did several tours while in Maui, but this was by far the best!

My husband and I had so much fun! Our experience was top notch and the staff are so nice and friendly, felt super safe the entire time. The life guards watch the entire time to make sure everyone is having a great time while staying close and being safe. We saw so many turtles and beautiful fish, at the end of the tour we encountered a lot of dolphins and it really felt so magical. 100% recommend, it was definitely my favorite part of our vacation!

We had a fantastic time yesterday seeing three kinds of dolphins! Captain Heather just knew how to find them. She was so informed and humorous. Snorkeling off the boat in Lanai Bay was so amazing. Great visibility and tons of fish. We staying in the water for the full hour and never tired. Afterwards the party started when the bar opened. Very soon after, everyone on the boat was friends. Drinks were excellent and plentiful. Highly recommend, it was fantastic!
