Invitation letter to a Canada visa

When you apply for a Canada short-stay (Temporary) visa, you will be staying in the country for a limited time. It is up to six months. The purpose of the visit could be:

  • Visiting friends and family

banner canada letterblue

If a Canadian citizen or resident sends you an invitation letter, the visa application will get easier. Sometimes, the authorities might ask you to provide an Invitation Letter for a Canada visa. It is particularly true with the Canada business visa.

An invitation Letter for a Canada visa is a signed letter from someone you know well in Canada. He/she could be:

  • Business partner
  • Family member

An invitation letter will provide the reason you are traveling to Canada. It will also prove that you are honest about the purpose of your visit. Please note that having an Invitation Letter for a Canada visa does not guarantee receiving a visa.

Who Needs an Invitation Letter to a Canada visa?

If you are eligible for a Canada eTA , you don’t need an invitation letter. Applicants need an invitation letter for a Canada visa in the following situations:

  • An applicant wants to visit Canada for tourism. He/she is not free of Canada short-stay visa.
  • The visitor is going to apply for a Canada super visa.
  • An applicant is visiting Canada for business purposes. The visitor is not free of Canada short-stay visa.

Who Can Write an Invitation Letter to a Canada visa?

A person you know well can write an invitation letter. He/she could be:

  • A close friend
  • A business partner

Please note that your relative must have an official certificate proving the relationship.

The person who writes the invitation letter should provide proof or at least enough reason that the visitor knows. The relationship should be clarified. You can not find any Canadian citizen or permanent Resident and ask him/her to send you an invitation letter. The authorities will check everything and verify whether there is a previous relationship between the visitor and the host. If you have proof that you and the visitor know each other for a long time, you would better provide it.

The one point to remember is that the invitation letter is not a guarantee for the visa. It just can strengthen your application to improve your chance of receiving the visa.

Note: You need to scan the letter and send it to the visa applicant. However, if the letter is notarized, you need to mail it to him/her.

What Info Should the Host Include?

The person writing an invitation letter for a Canada visa must include the following information about himself/herself:

  • The complete name. It must include first and last names.
  • Date of his/her birth.
  • Full contact information:
  • Phone number
  • A clear, correct address in Canada.
  • Canadian Passport or Canadian citizenship card.
  • Birth certificate. When you were born in Canada, you could provide it.
  • A copy of the Permanent Resident card or the IMM 1000.
  • The career you have in Canada.
  • You must state the names and birth dates of dependents and close family members living with you.
  • The people who you have sponsored
  • The person whose sponsorship is still in progress.

Important consideration

While you provide your contact information, ensure that you have written everything correctly and particularly, the spelling. The Canadian authorities often verify the writer’s identity and reach him/her. So you should make sure that your phone number or telephone number is written correctly. The same is true with your email address. Even one wrong letter could ruin everything.

The one mistake applicants often make is that they write an invitation letter that is too short. The invitation letter must be long enough to provide all the details about the trip, the host, and the visitor. It must also provide details about who and how will pay for the accommodation and all the costs of the trip. Bear in mind that the host must verify through proof or evidence that he/she is completely able to support the visitor.

While checking the letter, look at the spelling of the names. They must be according to your travel document or passport. Not only the spelling but also the order of the names is important. Look at the sample letters provided below and see what order your names should be.

The signature of the host is also essential and must be identical to his/hers in Canada. The address and postcode must also be written appropriately.

If the host is about to change his/her address, it must be mentioned in the letter and provide the new one if applicable. You would better mention the reason for changing the address and explaining the details. It could be due to a change in job or moving to a new province.

The dates you must include

While writing an invitation letter, there are two essential dates you must include. The first one is the date that the visitor will enter the country. It must be made clear when he/she enters the country and for what purpose.

It is also required that the letter explains the visitor’s ties. You need to convince the authorities that the visitor will return to his/her country through proof and evidence. A job contract or permission leave letter from the employer could be reasonable evidence.

What Info Should You Include About the Guest?

You must include the following items about the person visiting Canada:

  • Full name, don’t forget middle name if they have one.
  • The date of birth
  • Present address and phone number
  • What is the applicant’s purpose in visiting Canada?
  • The relation that the visa applicant has to the host.
  • How long will the applicant stay in Canada?
  • The accommodation and financial means of the person visiting Canada.
  • The dates the applicant will enter and leave Canada.

How long has the document been issued?

The one thing applicants forget about the invitation letter is the date it has been issued. In the immigration world, most documents that are more than two years old are considered ancient or antique. You would better renue them and get a new one.

Invitation letter for a Canada Super visa

Canada Super visa got introduced for foreign parents and grandparents to visit their children. As parents stay for longer than six months, an invitation letter is mandatory for a Super visa. There are also more requirements, as follows:

Do You Have to Notarize Invitation letter?

The visa officer might ask you for a notarized invitation letter. You will know this during the visa interview. It would be better to prepare a notarized one in advance to save time. You could also ask the Canadian embassy in your home country or visit their website to make sure.

What countries might need a Canada Invitation letter?

According to Globe and Mail , Canada’s foremost news media company, July 14 2021,”the rate of refused applications has been increasing from 35 to 41 per cent between 2016 and 2019”. However, the mentioned figures do not include the applicants who have withdrawn their applications.

In 2020, the Canadian immigration authorities “processed 7,835 applications and the rejection rate rose to 57 per cent”. It needs to be mentioned that the 2020 figures rose by 11 per cent compared to 2019.

The published data for the 2021 is even worrying for applicants. Up to Feb.2021, from 4,180 processed applications, 70 percent have been rejected.

The rejection figures indicate the importance of strengthening your application. Invitation letter is one of the ways to improve your case and increase the chance of receiving the visa.

By statistics, the residents of the following countries would better get as much help as possible and work on their application a lot. They need to make it as strong as possible:

An invitation letter can promote your chance to get a visa and empower it. So don’t underestimate the importance of every document you provide.

Note: mentioning the list of the above countries doesn’t mean that all applications from these countries will get rejected and an application from the UK will be completely successful. The residents of the above countries need to be extra careful with their application and make it as strong as possible. The rule is true with the applicants from all over the world.

Notarized invitation letter for Canada visa

Whether you need a Notarized invitation letter for a Canada visa is up to the visa officer’s decision. Depending on your nationality, duration of stay, hots’ conditions, and background, the officer might require you to notarize the letter.

A lawyer of officials in your home country need to notarize the letter. The Canadian embassy could require you a notarized letter from a specific lawyer or from officials of a certain governmental organization. You would better ask them to know what you have to to.

Sponsorship letter Canada

When foreign students want to study in another country or Canada, they need to provide proof of enough funds to cover expenses in the country. If they have a sponsor, such as parents, they need a sponsorship letter from them. It verifies that who and how they will pay the costs and from what source.

The sponsorship letter could overlap to a large extent with an invitation letter. So you need to include almost the same information for both the sponsor and the person who receives the supports.

When writing the letter, mention the purpose of the visit, whether it is education or just visiting. The dates the person will visit the country, leave, and exit needs to be clarified. Contact details and the address of the sponsor and visitor should also be mentioned.

A sample of the sponsorship letter for Canada is as follows:

15th December 2021

Canada visa without invitation letter

Many people ask whether they can apply for a Canada visa without the invitation letter. The answer depends on the purpose of your visit.

If you will be visiting a friend or family member and that is your sole purpose to visit the country, the government might ask you to provide an invitation letter from the host. If the authorities do not require one, you do not have to provide the letter.

An invitation letter from some Canada visas is not mandatory, but for some, it is. For instance, you need the letter for Canada super visa and business visa as the purpose of the visit is to stay with the relative or do business with a Canadian citizen.

If you indicate that the sponsor will provide the financial support for your stay, you are likely to receive your visitor visa.

' src=

Thanks for your kind feedback. To prove the applicant’s relationship with the resident in Canada (that would be you), the applicant should submit some documentation. For instance: A birth certificate, An official document that recognizes them as your siblings, and a copy of the inside back cover of your passport in which their name is detailed.

Hi, thanks for your blog I’m planning to send an invention letter to one of my friends, I was wondering if it is even possible to do this or not. the other problem is that I’m currently a student and I don’t have a job, does it make the worth of the invention letter less or not

thanks in advance

Dear Sir/Madam Thank you for your question You are kindly informed that you can write an invitation letter for your friend and state that your friend will be staying with you or wants to see you. But you should know that the Canadian authorities are strict about a visitor visa to see a friend and it is not as easy as the visa to visit your relatives. Best wishes

Hi for purposes of visiting for an end of life ceremony for my father, Can I (international student in Canada) write an invitation for my husband to visit Canada to get a TRV? Also, my sister is a Canadian Citizen, is is better we have an invite letter from her as well? Please let me know. Thanks.

Dear Nadia Siddiqi You are kindly informed that you can write the invitation letter and the purpose of visit is strong and it is likely to convince the officer to issue the visa. If your sister is working, you can mentioned her in your letter as the financial supporter.

' src=

Hi, For applying for visitor visa to canada for my parents should i include both of there details in one invitation letter or in 2 different letter?

Hello, We are just temporary residents (student & owp) can I invite my parents and my husband’s parents and his siblings to come since I will be giving birth this April 2022? Do I need to show proof of income?

Dear Hazel Thank you for your questions. You should know that IRCC has a ton of applications to process and they have become strict over visitor visas. But you can increase your relative’s chance of receiving the visa by an invitation letter. It does not seem necessary that you provide proof of income but indicate the place your relatives will stay with proof and proof of their income. The emotional part that involves childbirth could be a good justification to work on to convince the officer to issue the visa. Congratulations on your baby.

I need to invite my Fiancée to come and visit me in Canada for a short stay. I’m a permanent resident. If you don’t mind, have some questions.

First question. Which of the following is better?: 1- To show my bank report only. 2- To show bank reports for both of us

Second question. In the section of her employment status, do I have to mention her salary or just her job title would be enough?

Third question. Can I mention that she will be staying in a hotel or so as we will be visiting more than one place during her stay?

Dear Kermel Thank you for your questions. We wish you and your fiance a very good time in Canada. The answer to your questions is as follows in order: 1. It seems showing the bank report for both of you is better and you prove to the officer the financial capability to cover the expenses and it might convince the officer that your fiance will leave Canada if the salary is high enough.

2. As explained, mentioning the salary doesn’t have any harm so you would better mention it.

3. You should mention the place she will stay most of the time or the place she sleeps for nights. If she will be staying in the hotel, provide booking proof. You can also provide details of the places you visit but in short not details to shorten the letter. Good luck and have fun

Dear Kermel We are so sorry if your comment was deleted. You are kindly requested to write it again. Thank you.

Hi, Can I send an invitation letter to my sister and her family (husband and 3 kids) for visit visa for the summer vacation here? How much fund they have to show in the bank to spend here and I will be taking care of their shelter and food. Please advise.

Dear Rifas It is highly recommended that you write an invitation letter to your sister. If not, it is unlikely they will receive a visa to enter Canada. If you provide food and shelter, they would better have enough to cover their expenses for the duration of stay and going back.

' src=

Yes, they do have funds that can be used during vacation and back home too. I also send a sponsor letter to them. They are applying online as a family, my sister doesn’t work and brother-in-law is the one working. who should write the cover letter ? or both for their applications they have write two cover letters? Please advise

Dear Rifas The main applicant (your brother-in-law) can write the cover letter and explain the purpose of visit and the costs

' src=

Hi, can i send an invitation letter to my sister inlaw (brother’s wife) & kids? how do i proof of my relationship with them.

Yes, you an send an invitation letter. A family photo can prove the relationship.

' src=

Hi, can my aunt write me a letter of invitation? But what do I present as proof that we are related?

If there is no such thing, can my fiancé write the letter of invitation instead but include in his letter that I will be staying with my aunt? And with that being said, does my aunt have to write a 2nd letter of invitation to support my fiance’s letter regarding the address where I would be staying?

Yes, your aunt can write the letter. Do you have a photo together? Sometimes it might not be needed to prove the relationship but if you do, it will be better.

' src=

Hi, what if I want to sponsor my brother but I am a US Citizen. Do I need to make a Letter of Invitation?

' src=

Yes, if your brother is a US resident and you want to help him move to Canada, you may need to give him a Letter of Invitation, also called an Invitation Letter. This letter is an important part of the Canadian immigration process, especially if your brother is asking for a Temporary Resident Visa (visitor visa) to come to Canada.

You should put the following things in the Letter of Invitation: Your full name and contact information. Your home address in Canada, if you have one. A copy of your US passport and proof that you are a US citizen. Information about your bond with your brother, such as his name and how you are related to him. The reason for the visit, such as a family get-together, a holiday, or a special event. The amount of time your brother plans to stay in Canada. Information about your financial situation and how you’ll help your brother while he’s in Canada, including how much money you’ll give him. An invitation for your brother to visit you in Canada, including the dates of the visit.

If necessary, a promise that you will help your brother with money while he is there. Any other information that might help your brother’s visa application, like his ties to his home country and his plans to go back after the trip.

It’s important to be clear and honest in your Letter of Invitation, since Canadian immigration officials will read it. Your brother should give a copy of this letter to the visa office when he applies for a visa.

Before you can apply to become a teacher in British Columbia, Canada, or anywhere else in the country, you need…

How to Write a Letter of Invitation for a Visitor Visa Application to Canada

Do you need to write a letter of invitation for a family member or a friend applying for a visitor visa to Canada? If you’re not sure what to write, here’s a guide on how to make one and an actual sample that I used when I applied for my mother’s visitor visa. I also included a template that you can use so you don’t have to start from scratch.

What’s a letter of invitation, 3 things you should know before writing an invitation letter, what to include in the invitation letter for a visa to canada, sample letter of invitation.

If you’re in Canada and you have a family member or friend applying for a visitor visa to Canada, IRCC usually requires that they submit a letter of invitation from you. In case you’re not familiar with IRCC, the name stands for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. It’s the government department that processes immigration requests, and that includes visitor visa applications.

There are two different kinds of a visitor visa to Canada: the visitor visa, and the parent & grandparent super visa. Super visa is a “special” type of visitor visa where the holder is allowed to stay in Canada for up to 5 years straight. For a typical visitor visa, holders can only stay a maximum of 6 months straight. But both visas are valid for up to 10 years. In this post, I’ll only talk about the visitor visa .

A letter of invitation for a visitor visa to Canada is simply a letter where you write all the information that IRCC needs to know about:

  • Your family member or friend that you’re inviting to visit Canada, and
  • You, your family, and your household members.

You might be asking, “how do I write a letter that will guarantee a visa approval?”

The first thing you should note about a letter of invitation is that it won’t guarantee that your family member or friend’s visa to Canada will be approved. IRCC will assess the person, not you, who’s applying for the visitor visa. It’s your family member or friend’s responsibility to submit proofs that they meet Canada’s immigration laws. And while a letter of invitation is required, it’s not the basis of whether a visitor visa to Canada will be approved or not.

So, there’s no need for you to stress so much about writing one. Just make sure to include all the details required by IRCC and be honest.

Second, writing a letter of invitation does NOT mean that you’re legally responsible for those you are inviting. So for example, if your friend whom you invited comes here as a visitor, and then he overstays illegally, IRCC won’t come after you. Your friend will be the one to pay for whatever fine he needs to settle. But because you’re a good friend, just try to make sure this never happens.

And lastly, you don’t have to prove in the invitation letter that you can financially support the person you’re inviting. You don’t need to show that you’re employed, or how much you’re earning. We did anyway just in case.

But to be clear, it is your family member or friend who should prove to IRCC that they have enough funds to pay for their expenses here in Canada. Even if you write in your letter that you’ll provide for their housing and meals, they need to prove that they have their own money. And that money is enough to pay for their expenses during their visit to Canada. Most importantly, they must prove that they’ll return to their home country and not do anything illegal, like working or overstaying. Otherwise, IRCC might not approve their visitor visa application.

So, what information should you include when you’re writing a letter of invitation for someone applying for a visa to Canada?

I’m quoting here the exact information from IRCC’s website which you can verify here .

When you write your letter of invitation, “you must include this information about the person you are inviting :

  • complete name,
  • date of birth,
  • address and telephone number,
  • your relationship to the person,
  • the purpose of the trip,
  • how long the person plans to stay in Canada,
  • where the person will stay, and how he or she will pay for things, and
  • when the person plans to leave Canada.

And then, “you must include this information about yourself :

  • address and telephone number in Canada,
  • whether you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident,
  • a Canadian birth certificate, if you were born in Canada,
  • a Canadian citizenship card, if you are a naturalized citizen, or
  • a copy of your PR card or your IMM 1000 proof of landing, if you are a permanent resident,
  • details of your family, such as names and dates of birth of your spouse and dependents (this is mandatory for the parent and grandparent super visa ), and
  • the total number of people living in your household, including people you sponsored whose sponsorship is still in effect (this is mandatory for the parent and grandparent super visa ).”

If you’re wondering, “is there a format or template from IRCC that I can use?”.

I couldn’t find one from IRCC’s website itself. But I’m sharing with you here the actual letter I wrote for my mother when she applied for her visitor visa in December 2019. Her visa got approved after one month.

But using this letter as your template doesn’t guarantee that your family member or friend’s visa will get approved. Again, as I’ve said already, IRCC will assess the person, not you, who’s applying for the visitor visa. It’s your family member or friend’s responsibility to submit proofs that they meet Canada’s immigration laws.

So, without further ado, here’s the sample letter of invitation.

Final Words on Writing a Letter of Invitation for a Visa to Canada

As mentioned in this post, a letter of invitation is among the required documents that your family member or friend needs to submit for their visa application to Canada. You should be the one to write and sign this letter. And in some cases, IRCC might ask you to notarize it. If this is the case, then you must send the notarized letter to your family member or friend. Then he or she must then send this letter to the Canadian embassy or consulate outside of Canada when he or she applies for a visitor visa.

In my mother’s case, IRCC didn’t ask us to notarize the letter.

Before you write the letter, remember these 3 things:

  • The letter of invitation doesn’t guarantee visa approval.
  • Even if you wrote the letter, it doesn’t mean you’re legally responsible for the person you’re inviting.
  • And, if you’re the one writing the letter of invitation, you don’t have to show any financial proofs.

So while the letter of invitation is required, IRCC’s decision to approve the visa application of your family member or friend will not be based on this letter. IRCC will assess the documents to be submitted by the visa applicant. These documents must prove that

  • your family member or friend has enough money to pay for their expenses while in Canada,
  • and that they will return to their home country as they promised.

I hope that this post, along with the sample letter and template, helps you to write your letter of invitation for your parents, siblings, or friends’ visa application to Canada. Best of luck with their application!

Hi, this is by far the best post and sample I have read very clear. although, in my case, I will be supporting my mother’s stay here in Canada. that means I need proof of funds right?

Hi Hayam, thank you so much for your kind comment 🙂 If your mother is applying for a visit visa, she is the one mainly responsible for her finances here so she should be able to prove to the visa officer that she has enough funds on her own. If you will be supporting her financially, she still has to have money on her own. In this case, you can show proof to the visa officer of your financial condition although as far as I know this is only optional. You can double check these info from IRCC’s website to be sure as I only based my answer on oir personal experience. Thank you 🙂

This guide covers the essentials of invitation letters for Canadian visas, including how to write one.

What is an invitation letter for the Canada Visa?

A Canadian Visitor Visa invitation letter is a written invitation from someone you have a close relationship with in Canada, such as a friend, family member, or business partner.

This individual vouches for your identity and visit's purpose, urging the Canadian Consulate to grant your visa. The letter assures the Consulate of your genuine intentions, confirming you'll depart Canada as required and have financial support if necessary.

Serving as additional proof, this letter can bolster your visa application when properly presented.

Is an invitation letter mandatory for a Visitor Visa to Canada?

The letter of invitation is not mandatory. Still, it can be requested in some cases or make the application process more positive. The letter works as proof of the visa applicant’s travel purpose.

Can I apply for a Canada Visitor Visa without an invitation letter?

Yes, you can. You don’t need a letter of invitation to apply for the Canada Visitor Visa. You must provide your travel details and meet all the requirements to get this visa.

How much does an invitation letter cost for family members and friends?

There is no cost. The person inviting the application to visit Canada writes the letter, and the applicant submits it as part of the Canada Visa application process.

Who can write a letter of invitation for your application?

An invitation letter for a Canadian visa can be iwritten by a close family member (like a parent, sibling, spouse, or child), a friend, or a business partner, especially if you're visiting for business reasons.

How to Write an Invitation Letter for Canada Visa Correctly (Sample Included)

invitation letter for canada visa

There are many reasons you may be applying for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to Canada. It could be to visit friends or family, for tourism, or business.

It is a good idea to include an invitation letter with your canada visa application, even if immigration, refugees, and citizenship canada (ircc) does not ask for it..

The letter should be written on company or personal letterhead and include: contact information of the person extending the invitation; their relationship to you (friend, relative); how long they will host you; what financial commitments they will make during your stay; where in Canada they live; and more.

We’ve gone through the details of what a Canada visitor visa invitation letter is and added sample invitation letters as well. Read on!

What is an Invitation Letter for Canada Visa?

Who needs an invitation letter to visit canada, who is qualified to write an invitation letter for canada visa, what should a canada visitor visa invitation letter contain  , does the invitation letter for canada visa need to be notarized , how to send the canada visa invitation letter, how to submit the canada visa invitation letter, is the person inviting legally responsible for the visa applicant , letter of invitation canada sample, letter of invitation – canada sample template for parents, family members, friends, and other visitors, frequently asked questions (faq) on invitation letter for canada visa, final words: invitation letter, canada.

A Canada visitor visa invitation letter is a simple letter written and signed by someone you have a close relationship with within Canada, inviting you to the country. The person can be your relative, friend, or business partner, but you must have a close relationship with him or her, and they should be able to vouch for your identity and the purpose of your visit.

Whether you are applying for a Canadian temporary resident visa or a business visa, a letter of invitation can strengthen your application.

The person inviting you is basically guaranteeing the Canadian Consulate that you are not giving false information about your reasons to enter Canada, that you will not overstay your visa, and that they can provide you financial support if you can not. However, the invitation letter does not guarantee your visa approval.

Most people intending to visit Canada will not need an invitation letter for a Canada visa. People who are qualified or eligible for an eTA (electronic travel authorization) do not need to include an invitation letter in their application.

Citizens of other countries apart from the United States travelling to Canada have to apply for a paper visa at Consulates or Canadian Embassies. Most of these applications will not require an invitation letter, but applicants are asked to present one in some cases.

The invitation letter only strengthens the visa application with a Canadian citizen , permanent resident, or temporary resident (such as a student) backing. It does not guarantee visa approval.

As stated earlier, anyone close to you that resides in Canada can help you write an invitation letter for a Canada visa. The person can be a close relative or friend and must meet the following requirements:

  • The person inviting you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • The person could also be a temporary resident in Canada with legal status, such as an international student inviting their family or friends for their graduation.
  • He or she cannot be an illegal immigrant.
  • He or she must have good standing status in Canada.
  • The person should have a job and stream of income, if they are finally responsible for your visit. This will increase the chances of their letter yielding a positive result.

An invitation letter for a Canadian working visa application must come from the Canadian host company. The letter should be written by a representative of the company.

Business visitors who would require a letter of invitation from a Canadian company can be:

  • Existing or potential buyers.
  • Conference visitors.
  • People who are coming for training at the company’s Canadian premises from overseas.

The invitation letter for the Canada Visa has to contain some information to be accepted. If the person does not include all the required details, the Canadian Consulate may not accept the letter, and it can even end up hurting your chances of getting the visa. The requirements are in three sections:

  • The visa applicant’s information.
  • The information of the person inviting the applicant.
  • Super visa invitation letter (specific information, if applicable).

Let’s discuss them one after the other.

1. The Visa Applicant’s Information

The person writing the invitation letter for Canada visa must include the following information about you:

  • Your full name (first name, last name, and any middle names);
  • Date of birth;
  • Your contact information (the current address you are applying from, your telephone number, and email);
  • The relationship you have with the person inviting you (brother or sister, friend, nephew, etc.)
  • How long you intend to stay in Canada
  • The purpose of the trip to Canada (e.g., family visit, work, tourism, etc.)
  • Where you will stay in Canada and how you plan to pay for your stay;
  • The date you will arrive in Canada and the date you plan to leave.

2. The Information of the Person Inviting the Applicant

The person writing the invitation letter for Canada visa must include the following information about themselves:

  • Their full name (first name, last name, and any middle names);
  • The date of birth;
  • Contact information- their exact address in Canada and a telephone number and email they can be reached.
  • Their status in Canada (Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
  • Canadian citizenship card or passport if the person naturalized as a citizen, i.e., swore an oath;
  • Canadian birth certificate or citizenship certificate if the person was born in Canada;
  • For permanent residents- photocopy of their Permanent Resident (PR card) or the IMM 1000 (Record of Landing document).
  • Their job title
  • The names and dates of birth of the close family members and dependents of the person sending the invitation letter.
  • The total number of people living in the person’s household, including people that the person has sponsored for permanent residence previously or those who are still being sponsored.

3. Super Visa Invitation Letter (Specific Information, If Applicable)

What is a Super Visa? It is a visa that allows parents and grandparents to visit their children or grandchildren for a period longer than six months. Since the visa’s validity is longer than that of other Temporary Resident Visas (TRV), the super visa invitation letter must contain some additional information to the ones above.

Children and grandchildren who are inviting their parents or grandparents to Canada have to include the following in the super visa invitation letter:

  • A declaration written and signed by the child or grandchild that they will provide their parents or grandparents financial support throughout their entire stay in Canada;
  • Evidence that the child or grandchild have enough income equal to or above the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) to provide for the total number of people living in the household, as well as the visiting parents or grandparents.

In some cases, the person inviting you has to notarize the letter of invitation in Canada. However, there’s no way you can tell if the visa officers will ask for a notarized invitation letter. But, it is better to be safe and have a notarized copy prepared and ready for submission in case they request it.

These can help you:

  • If you are asked to submit your biometrics as part of your visa application, then the person inviting you to Canada should notarize the letter before sending it to you. You can check if you need biometrics by selecting your country and age.
  • If you’ve had any problem with the Canadian authorities previously, you should also have your invitation letter notarized.

A Commissioner for Oaths or a Notary Public will have to sign your letter or a certificate attached to the letter for your Canada visa invitation letter to be notarized.

The person inviting you to visit Canada should sign and date the letter to make it more official. After this, they can scan it and email it to you. If the Canadian Consulate requests the letter to be notarized, they should do this before sending it.

However, a notarized letter may need to be mailed. Mailing is pretty slow, causing the letter to take longer to arrive. So, in this case, they should not send the notarized letter by regular mail. Instead, they should mail the letter through a service that tracks the letter to prevent it from getting lost.

After receiving the invitation letter, there’s no need to submit it separately from other documents. Instead, if possible, you should submit it when you submit your initial Canadian visa application. Do not wait till the visa office requests you to submit an invitation letter before you do, as this can delay your application.

The writer of the invitation letter is not legally responsible for the person they invite. Visitors are held responsible for their actions once they arrive in the country.

The letter of invitation only helps convince or assure the immigration officers that the visitor has a genuine reason to visit Canada and has financial support (if applicable) and a place to stay.

To give you a clearer picture of everything we’ve discussed, we’ve added an image of a complete letter from a person inviting their close family friend to stay in Canada.

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport

  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Canada Visa Invitation Letter in 2024 [Samples Included]

For some visa applicants, especially those visiting family or friends, an invitation letter can be a pivotal part of their application.

This article will explore the significance, format, and key considerations when drafting an invitation letter for a Canadian visa.

What is a Visa Invitation Letter?

An invitation letter for a Canadian visa is a formal document wherein a resident or citizen of Canada invites a foreign national to visit the country. This letter serves as a testament to the visiting intentions of the foreigner and gives context to their stay.

Why is it Important?

A well-drafted invitation letter can be instrumental in enhancing the visa applicant’s credibility.

It provides additional evidence of the purpose of the visit and may offer more assurance to immigration officials that the visitor has genuine intentions and will not overstay.

While not always mandatory, having one can bolster the application, especially when visiting family or friends.

What Are The Components of the Invitation Letter?

1. Personal Details of the Host:

  • Date of birth
  • Address and telephone number in Canada
  • Status in Canada (citizen, permanent resident)
  • Relationship to the guest

2. Personal Details of the Guest:

  • Address and telephone number
  • The purpose of the trip (e.g., vacation, business, study)
  • Details of the visit: duration and where they will stay
  • Date of departure from Canada

3. A Declaration: The host must declare that they will financially support the guest during their stay in Canada, if this is the case. This part should include details of any financial arrangements or commitments.

4. Supporting Documents: The letter should mention any attached supporting documents. These might include proof of relationship, host’s status in Canada, or any other relevant information.

5. Date and Signature: Always date the letter and include the host’s signature.

What Are The Types of Visas Requiring Invitation Letters?

In the context of Canadian visas, an invitation letter is predominantly required for certain categories. This letter acts as a validation of the applicant’s intent and provides clarity about the nature of the visit.

1. Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV): Most commonly associated with the need for an invitation letter. Whether it’s for leisure, family visits, or other short-term non-work purposes, having an invitation letter can lend credibility to the application.

2. Super Visa: Specifically designed for parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who wish to visit their family in Canada for an extended period. The invitation letter in this context would detail the host’s relationship to the applicant, pledge of support, and other assurances.

3. Business Visitor Visa: Business professionals visiting Canada for meetings, conferences, or other short-term business purposes may require an invitation letter from the Canadian company or organization they’re engaging with.

4. Other Special Visas: Occasionally, for cultural, sports events, or academic purposes, attendees might be asked to furnish an invitation letter from the Canadian organizers.

Do I need to get the invitation letter notarized?

While an invitation letter for a visa to Canada doesn’t necessarily need to be notarized, it’s often recommended to do so to enhance its authenticity.

A notarized letter can give visa officers added confidence that the contents of the letter are accurate and that the inviter is genuinely extending the invitation.

If you’re unsure or believe that your guest may face greater scrutiny during the visa application process, it might be beneficial to have the letter notarized.

I’m a temporary resident in Canada. Can I send an invitation letter?

Yes, temporary residents in Canada, such as those on a work permit, study permit, or even those on a visitor visa, can send an invitation letter to invite friends or family to visit.

However, it’s essential to note that being a temporary resident might not carry the same weight as a permanent resident or citizen when inviting someone. When sending the invitation letter, ensure you:

  • Clearly state your current status in Canada.
  • Provide copies of your valid immigration status documents, such as your study or work permit.
  • Explicitly mention your relationship with the person you are inviting and the purpose of their visit.

Remember, the visa officer needs to be assured that the person being invited will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.

Having a temporary status might raise concerns about this, so it’s crucial to make the invitation and the intent of the visit as clear as possible.

How recent should the invitation letter be?

The invitation letter should be as recent as possible to reflect the current intent and circumstances of both the inviter and the invitee.

Ideally, the letter should be dated no more than a few months before the visa application is submitted.

A letter that is too old may raise questions about its relevance and the continued validity of the information it contains.

If there have been significant delays between drafting the invitation letter and the visa application submission, it’s a good idea to draft a newer letter.

5 Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Crafting an invitation letter with clarity and precision is crucial. Here are some common pitfalls and how to circumnavigate them:

1. Vague Details: A letter that lacks specifics about the visit’s purpose, duration, and arrangements can be a red flag. Always include detailed and accurate information about the visit.

2. Missing Host Information: The letter should have the host’s full details, including their legal status in Canada (citizen, permanent resident), address, and other contact information.

3. Not Providing Supporting Documents: Depending on the visa type, it might be beneficial to include additional documents. For instance, a Super Visa might require proof of financial support.

4. Informal Tone: Remember, this is a formal letter. Maintain a professional tone throughout and ensure it’s free from errors.

5. No Mention of Departure: The immigration officer must be convinced of the visitor’s intent to leave Canada once the visa expires. Highlighting this in the invitation letter can be advantageous.

What Are The Legal Implications for the Host?

When inviting someone to Canada, the host assumes certain responsibilities, both moral and legal. Understanding these can help prevent complications down the road.

1. Financial Support: Especially relevant for Super Visas, the host might be required to provide financial support for the visitor, ensuring they don’t seek public funds.

2. Ensuring Departure: While it’s the visitor’s primary responsibility, the host, by virtue of the invitation letter, plays a role in ensuring the visitor abides by the visa’s terms and leaves Canada as scheduled.

3. Misrepresentation: It’s imperative that all details in the invitation letter are accurate. Any intentional or unintentional misinformation can have legal consequences for the host.

4. Change in Circumstances: If, for any reason, the host’s situation changes (e.g., moving to a different city, facing financial hardship), it’s advisable to communicate this to the visitor and possibly the immigration authorities.

Remember, while the invitation letter is a valuable document in the visa application process, it doesn’t guarantee visa approval. Both the host and the applicant should be aware of their responsibilities and rights in this context.

I’ve Changed My Mind and No Longer Wish to Invite the Person. What Should I Do?

If you have decided to retract your invitation for a Canada visa in 2024, it is important to take immediate and appropriate steps:

  • Inform the Invitee : Promptly communicate with the person you invited, explaining that you are withdrawing the invitation. It’s important to do this as soon as possible, especially if they haven’t applied for the visa yet.
  • Notify Canadian Immigration Authorities : If the visa application has already been submitted, you should inform the Canadian embassy or consulate. Provide them with a written statement indicating that you are withdrawing the invitation and explain the reason briefly.
  • Documentation : Keep a copy of all communications and notifications for your records.
  • Consider Privacy and Sensitivity : Be mindful of how you communicate this decision, respecting privacy and potentially sensitive nature of the situation.

Can the Invitation Letter Be Emailed or Does It Have to Be Sent by Post?

As of 2024, the invitation letter for a Canada visa can typically be sent via email. The applicant can then print out the letter to include in their visa application. Key points to consider include:

  • Legibility and Clarity : Ensure that the scanned copy of the invitation letter is clear and legible.
  • Electronic Signatures : If the letter includes a signature, ensure that it is properly scanned and visible in the emailed copy.
  • Supporting Documents : If you are including any supporting documents (like proof of your status in Canada), these should also be scanned and emailed.
  • Embassy Guidelines : Check with the specific Canadian embassy or consulate to confirm if they have any specific requirements regarding the format of the invitation letter.

Using email is generally more expedient and convenient, allowing for quicker transmission and easier handling of documents for the visa application process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long should the visa invitation letter be.

While there’s no strict word limit, it’s essential to ensure that the letter is concise and clearly outlines the purpose of the visit, accommodation arrangements, relationship to the invitee, and other relevant details.

Does having an invitation letter guarantee visa approval?

No, an invitation letter is just one part of the visa application process. While it can support an applicant’s intent and reason for visiting, the final decision rests on various factors, including the applicant’s ties to their home country, financial stability, and overall application presentation.

The person I'm inviting has been denied a visa before. Can an invitation letter help this time?

While an invitation letter can provide clarity on the purpose of the visit, it doesn’t override other concerns that might have caused the previous rejection. It’s essential for the applicant to address any past issues or reasons for refusal in their new application.

What happens if there's an error in my invitation letter?

If you spot an error after submission, it’s best to write a corrected version and submit it promptly. Any discrepancies or misrepresentations can impact the outcome of the visa application.

How to Write a Sponsorship Letter for Visa

Let us take a look at the step-by-step process to easily craft a supporting document for visa approval:

  • The foremost element to keep in mind is “The To” reference in the sponsorship letter for VISA which should include the country name or the embassy you are being referred to for your visa approval.
  • Next is to clearly mention the ‘intention of visiting the place’, like “education abroad” in the case of students. This would be the base of actually getting your visa approved.
  • Prominently mention the dates of your visit so that the embassy can initiate your case accordingly.
  • Moreover, you can mention your living address and place of work which can act as verification proof in getting your visa approved.

If you are applying for a UK and need sponsorship, you will have to ask for a sponsorship letter from the concerned person/institution. Here are the key essentials you must include in your letter for a UK visa:

  • Date of Birth
  • Contact Information
  • Address in the UK
  • UK immigration status
  • Clarify the Relationship between the Visa Sponsor and Applicant (Employer-employee, educational institution-student, family member, etc.)
  • Why the applicant requires the UK visa: Mention the reason
  • More details about the stay: Duration, Living Accommodation, Financial Support, etc.

Sponsorship Letter for UK Visa

If you are applying for a Canada visa and need sponsorship, you will have to ask for a letter from the concerned person/institution. Here are the key essentials you must include in your letter of Canada visa:

Details about the sponsor:

  • Complete name,
  • Date of birth,
  • Address and telephone number,
  • Your relationship to the person,
  • The purpose of the trip,
  • How long the person plans to stay in Canada,
  • Where the person will stay, and how he or she will pay for things, and
  • When the person plans to leave Canada

Details of the visa applicant:

  • Why the applicant requires the Canada visa: Mention the reason

Ever wondered why you actually need a sponsorship letter for a VISA? When an applicant is unable to cover the expense of studying and living in a foreign land, a ‘sponsor’ will be responsible for paying for food, trips, tuition fees, accommodation, etc. Therefore, this letter is written by the sponsors, who have to first explain their relationship with the student and the overall costs that will be covered by them. Moreover, to ensure the validity of the document, proof of the availability of the funds and the identity of the sponsor can be attached.

By now, you must be thinking that it’s quite easy to write a sponsorship document. Actually, it is, if you have an idea about what the Consular Officer is looking for. Sponsors can follow the below-mentioned guidelines to efficiently create a sponsorship letter:

  • Avoid giving vague and unnecessary information.
  • As it is an official document, avoid using a personal tone and casual writing.
  • Do not make it too long.
  • Clearly mention your contact details like phone number and email, as they would be used by the embassy to contact you in future.

Here’s How You Can Apply for German Student Visa !

A sponsorship letter for a visa is a formal document written by a host or sponsor in the destination country to support the visa application of a foreign visitor. It serves as a declaration of financial responsibility and intention to support the visitor during their stay. Visa authorities often require this letter to ensure that the visitor has sufficient financial support and a valid reason for their trip.

A sponsorship letter can be written by a family member, friend, employer, or any individual or organization willing to host and financially support the visa applicant. The letter should include the sponsor’s full name, address, and contact information. It should also state the purpose of the visit, the duration of stay, and details of financial support, such as accommodation, food, and other related expenses. Additionally, it should express the sponsor’s willingness to take responsibility for the visitor during their stay.

No, a sponsorship letter does not guarantee visa approval. While it is an important supporting document, the visa application process involves various factors and requirements set by the immigration authorities of the destination country. The decision to approve or deny a visa ultimately depends on the applicant’s eligibility, documentation, and compliance with the specific visa requirements. A well-prepared sponsorship letter can strengthen the application, but it is not the sole determinant of approval.

A sponsorship letter for a visa is one single document that increases your chances of fulfilling your aspiration to travel and study in one of the top countries abroad. Hello Please if an uncle or a family friend wants to be ones sponsor, does he need to add another supporting document aside from the sponsor letter

Hi, Akinlou! To become one’s financial sponsor, it’s not important to be a relative! So, a friend or an uncle can become a financial sponsor. They would need: A filing of I-864 or an affidavit of support. In this affidavit, the sponsor would promise to support the non-citizen once they enter the country. dear sir, could you pls tell me that what sorts of docs are needed beside sponsor letter.say Affidavit letter plus what others….pls advice

The list of documents required for a sponsorship letter is- – Affidavit Letter – Letter of Invitation – Financial Documents – Sponsor’s Residency Status

More documents get added depending upon the country you are applying for. For example, in the case of the USA, you need to write a letter to the US Consulate requesting them to grant visa to the one who is being sponsored.

i would like to know why is it so hard to get Canada Visa and it takes to long to get one

Hi Najma, The processing time varies from country to country. For Canada study permits, anyone applying from India can expect a processing time of around 20 calendar days. As Indians are eligible for applying under the Student Direct Stream [SDS], they can expect a faster processing time for their study permit for Canada. Here is our detailed blog on Canada student visa that will tell you more about the same: https://leverageedu.com/blog/canada-student-permit/ and https://leverageedu.com/blog/canada-visa-for-indians/ .

Hi Vishal, You can apply for a TRV without an invitation from a host. For this you must include: a. Provisional flight bookings (you can mention you will confirm the tickets when the TRV is issued) b. Hotel bookings c. Detailed day-by-day itinerary with expense estimates and prove you have the finances for flight tickets + hotel stay + the itinerary d. Overseas travel medical insurance (although it's not necessary) Cheers

You'll need to show a bank statement before entering this country (here is why)

W hile a passport from most Western countries will generally grant one visa-free access to hundreds of different nations, those who have traveled to a place that does require a tourist visa (or who have applied for work authorization or a longer stay) will know just how much of a headache that can be.

The standard is to provide not only documentation proving one's identity and employment but in what some cases can be ticket and hotel stays (often booked before the visa gets approved), a list of assets and several months of bank statements. The goal is to prove that one has funds to cover the trip and is not at risk of remaining illegally after the visa's expiration date.

Related: A country just went visa-free for visitors with any passport

While Brazil has been allowing Americans to visit the country for up to 90 days without a visa for tourism for the last five years, the country has recently announced that it will re-introduce an e-visa for those looking to enter. The decision will also apply to citizens of other Western countries such as Canada and Australia and, while initially intended to start in April 2024, has been pushed back until April 10, 2025 as the country works out the online system that will make it possible to apply for the visa online.

These are the documents you'll need to show to get a visa for Brazil

Once rolled out however, getting a tourist visa for Brazil will require paying a $185 application fee and submitting significantly more paperwork than at the moment — including proof of residence and employment, a letter of intent declaring why one wants to visit the country and funds proven through either the last three bank statements or six pay stubs.

  • Airlines see a new kind of traveler at the front of the plane

Those who do not have $2,000 USD in their account consistently over several months will need to have a sponsor who guarantees to take on financial responsibility should the visa holder run out of money while in the country.

"Starting from April 10th, 2025, passport holders from Australia, Canada, and the United States will require a visa for entry into Brazil," the Brazilian Embassy in the United States said in a statement. "[...] If your arrival is scheduled on or after April 9th, we strongly recommend applying for your eVisa in advance to prevent travel disruptions caused by delays or missed connections."

This is where you'll need to go to apply for a Brazilian visa

Once granted, the visa will be valid for the next 10 years or until one's passport expires. Brazilian citizens have never had visa-free access to the U.S. and currently have to pay a significantly higher application fee of $180 to receive one.

The visa will also be valid only for visits of up to 90 days at a time; after reaching the limit, one will need to leave and stay away for at least the same time period before returning on the same visa. As all tourist visas, it does not grant the right to work or live in the country long-term.

The application will be available online while the embassy recommends applying at least two months before one's scheduled trip.
