Cape Town’s seas are teeming with life, including some of the biggest creatures on earth. Hermanus, a small seaside town two hours from Cape Town, is known to be the whale watching capital of the world.

For much of the year, from June to December, thousands of Southern Right and Humpback whales visit the waters around Hermanus making this is perfect place for your Cape Town Whale Watching tour.

Wanderer’s Cape Town Whale Watching tour begins with a scenic coastal drive from Cape Town’s city center, passing through the harbor town Gordons Bay and the beach hamlet Pringle Bay, before an optional stop at Betty’s Bay where you will visit the large colony of African penguin at the Stony Point nature reserve and also the Harold Porter botanical gardens for the nature lover.

We pass through Kleinmond, a little town at the mouth of the Bot River Lagoon that is home to the only herd of wetland horses in South Africa.

Finally, we arrive in Hermanus. A cliff-top walkway stretching from the old harbor near the town center to the Blue Flag certified Grotto Beach offer some of the best whale watching in the world. At the southern tip of Africa, where two of the world’s greatest oceans converge, a total experience of land, sea and the rainbow culture of the Western Cape offer you the four most exciting whale watching locations in the world! The Cape Whale Route is a 900-kilometre-long stretch of coastline that extends from Strandfontein near Muizenberg to Plettenberg Bay in the southern Cape. Every year, between June and December, Southern right whales mate and calve, giving you the awe-inspiring opportunity to get up close with them. Calving normally takes place in August and September, but can happen as early as July.

From December until mid-February, large super-groups of Humpback whale s , reaching as many as 150 per group can be seen on the west coast.

Best spots for whale watching near Cape Town

Simon’s Town

A mere 45 minutes from Cape Town is Simon’s Town, the departure point for the False Bay whale watching trip. False Bay is a calm, sheltered haven for some of these ocean giants from on our planet: Southern Right, Humpback and Brydes whales. Whilst Brydes whales are all-year-round residents, it’s the migratory Southern Right and Humpback whales that are the stars of the whale watching tours. This is because they are naturally curious, offer good surface active and very often display their natural exuberance by lob tailing, sailing and breaching.

Situated on the stunning South Coast of the Western Cape, 90 minutes from Cape Town, Hermanus is famous for its incredible viewings of Southern Right whales that arrive in large numbers to breed, give birth and playfully frolic in the sea. Hermanus should in fact be considered the official home of the Southern Right Whale, since every year during late Sept/early Oct, Hermanus hosts its annual whale festival, which attracts over 150,000 people.

Situated under 3 hours from Cape Town, Dyer Island is located 8 km from shore and is an access controlled Important Bird Area (IBA) for the conservation of its many resident bird species, including African penguins. Adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, home to a 60,000 strong Cape fur seal colony. We will take you into the channel of water between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock known as the world famous ‘Shark Alley’.  We will take you to the whale hot-spots in the bay.  With over a decade of experience, not only do we know where to expect the best whale viewings, but the whales have also learned where to expect us!

The Southern Right whales usually arrive in June and depart late November. Humpbacks migrate through the region between May to mid-February, while the Brydes whales are found slightly further offshore all year round.

All three areas are most famous for encounters with Southern Right, Humpback whales, and several coastal dolphin species. You can also see African penguins, Cape fur seals, black oystercatcher birds and a variety of other marine life.

Where to Go Whale Watching in Cape Town in 2024

If you’re visiting Cape Town during the winter, then whale watching should be at the top of your list! Yup, as if the Mother City didn’t already have enough on offer, it boasts opportunities to see Southern Right whales, Humpback whales, and Bryde’s whales. 

However, you’re not going to spot any whales wandering around the CBD, that’s for sure. If you’re keen to spot whales between June and December, I recommend you read up on where to look. And with that in mind, I’m going to share the best places to go whale watching in Cape Town in 2024! 

This list includes places where you can spot whales for free from the shore, as well as where to go to get out on the water with a whale watching cruise or even a kayak tour. So grab your binoculars, and let’s dive in. These places are in order of their proximity to the city centre, just so you know. 

1. Simon’s Town 

I’m kicking off with Simon’s Town, which just so happens to be where I saw my very first whale in Cape Town! After visiting Boulders Beach, my friends and I were just hanging out at a cafe and we saw one breaching in the distance. It was such a wonderful surprise!

So, you can bring binoculars to Simon’s Town and hopefully spot some whales while visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach . It’s possible to see them from the boardwalks on the beach or one of the cafes nearby, which is what happened to me! 

Alternatively, one great way to see them is to book this kayaking tour , which takes you from Long Beach to Boulders Beach. You can do it year-round but during the winter, the chances of spotting whales are pretty high. So with whales, penguins, and probably dolphins on offer, this is a true marine life bonanza. Not bad for R525!

Whale watching cruise 

Or, between June and November, the Simon’s Town Boat Company offers 2.5-hour whale cruises along the False Bay Coast, with a 98% success rate! It costs R1,450, which I personally think is a very fair price.

What I like about this company is that they’re very passionate about the whales, and all interactions are led by the animals, so there’s minimal human interference. They know exactly how to approach the whales, they understand their behaviour, and there’s an expert guide on board who can tell you a ton about the way whales live, which is so interesting.

2. Cape Point

Cape Point is a rocky promontory, and if you head up to the top of the lighthouse, you can get fantastic views. It was very wet and windy on the day that I went, and I was still impressed by its beauty, so I can only imagine how amazing it would look on a sunny day.

You can either walk or take the funicular to the top of the lighthouse here. We took the funicular as it was raining, and then walked down thanks to loadshedding and realised the path wasn’t as steep as we had thought. Once we got to the top, we had the best seat in the house. This was in February, so we didn’t see any whales, but in winter you’d have a strong chance of seeing a fair few while you’re up here! 

3. Chapman’s Peak Scenic Drive

Chapman’s Peak Scenic Drive is so beautiful. I mean, Mercedes-Benz don’t pick ugly places to shoot their adverts, do they?

You start at Hout Bay which is absolutely gorgeous, and then as you follow the winding road, the red rocky cliffs create a striking contrast against the sky and the water. And since the road overlooks the sea, driving along here is a fantastic opportunity to spot whales! 

It’s such an amazing drive that you should do it regardless, but make sure to bring your binoculars in the car with you if you’re driving along here during winter. Oh, and do check the status of the road before you go, as it does close during wind and rain. This is definitely one to save for a sunny day. 

4. Boyes Drive

While not quite as epic as Chapman’s Peak in terms of its beauty, Boyes Drive is still pretty dang stunning. It’s a winding coastal road and it provides fantastic ocean views, so it’s ideal for spotting whales in False Bay during winter. It’s a 7-kilometre (4.3-mile) stretch of road between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay… which also happen to be fun places to explore and spot whales! 

5. Yzerfontein 

Don’t ask me how to pronounce it, but during the winter, Yzerfontein is known for wildflowers and whales! This West Coast harbour town is a great spot to see Southern Right and humpback whales, and it’s pretty common to see dusky and bottlenose dolphins around here, too. 

This self-drive tour involves a horseback safari through a game reserve to see giraffes, water buffalo, and zebras, as well as a beach ride where you can spot whales in the distance. And, during August and September, the wildflowers will be in bloom, which is even more amazing. 

For R800, I think this is pretty good value for a 2-hour horse ride. And you may well spot some whales on the drive up here, as well, as Yzerfontein is about an hour north of Cape Town. I’d also highly recommend a stop at Darling Brewery for a pint, and Darling Olives for a wine and olive tasting. They also sell olive oil lip balms and body butter that are to die for!

6. Hermanus 

Where better to go whale watching in Cape Town than Hermanus ? This seaside town is world famous for its whale watching, and the annual whale festival that takes place every September. It’s a 2-hour drive from the city, so you can take a day trip from Cape Town, but if you’re able to, I think it’s worth staying overnight – Beautiful Abalone has lovely rooms starting from just R900, but you can check out the full list of hotels here .

Once you’re in Hermanus, there are a few different ways to see whales. To be honest, between June and December, you’ll probably see plenty of them just walking along a section of the famous Cliff Path (or the whole thing, if you’re up for a challenge!) 

For me, a whale watching cruise in Hermanus would be the clear choice. It’s one of the best places in the whole world to get out on a boat and see whales, so if you’re going to do it anywhere, do it here! 

Cruise with transport from Cape Town

You can either take a whale watching cruise from Cape Town so that you don’t have to stay overnight in Hermanus, which is ideal if you’re short on time. I think that this tour is a fantastic choice as you get a 3-hour whale cruise, a visit to the African penguin colony at Stony Point, and to go to a fantastic local winery for lunch – usually Creation, which I’ve been to and loved. I couldn’t ask for a better day out. 

It costs R3,040 which includes everything except your lunch and tasting at the wine estate. But this is because it’s flexible, so you can also grab a takeaway from somewhere else. If you’re not a wine lover, I suggest asking your guides to take you to the Station in Hermanus instead. Simon makes the best eggs benny, cheesecake, and pretty much everything else in town!

Cruise from Hermanus 

Alternatively, this tour includes pickup from your Hermanus hotel, and then you’ll head out on an epic marine safari! And when you’re in Hermanus during whale season, that means whales, whales, and… oh yeah, more whales. 

The rest of the Marine Big 5 is comprised of sharks, dolphins, seals, and penguins, so get your bingo card out for this cruise. One thing that I really appreciate about this tour is that there’s one crew member to every 6-7 guests and they don’t overcrowd the boat. I’ve been on tours where they shove you in like sardines, and it’s not pleasant! 

This cruise costs R2,400, including tea and coffee beforehand, a warming bowl of soup in a restaurant afterwards, and entry to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. This experience is also wheelchair accessible, but there’s a maximum of two chairs per boat so do contact the company through Viator after booking and let them know your requirements.

I don’t think horse riding on the beach can ever be bad, but this one is extra special because you get to spot whales along the way. It actually takes place along the beaches within the Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary, which is a marine conservation region. So really, where better to spot whales from the shore? 

The tour costs R1,100, which is pretty good for a 4-hour beach ride! I paid R800 for an hour-long one in Cape Town itself, and I didn’t even see any whales. (It was incredible though, and you can find out more about horse riding in Cape Town here.)

Walk the Cliff Path

Walking the famous Cliff Path is a must while you’re in Hermanus. I’ve only done a section of it myself, but I would love to do the entire thing one day. The 12-kilometre (7.5-mile) path hugs the coastline, so in terms of views, it’s basically whale-central. It takes about 3.5 hours out-and-back, and I’d definitely recommend bringing your binoculars for this one. Make sure to keep count of how many you see – I would love to know! 

7. Gansbaai 

Gansbaai is best known for its Great Whites, but its close proximity to Hermanus and the Walker Bay Reserve mean that it’s also a pretty great place to spot whales. In fact, you can actually spot them both on this shark cage diving and whale watching combo tour – how insane is that?

You can do this tour on a day trip from Cape Town, as it includes return transport from the city. Now, I’ll be honest, it’s pretty far – at least 2.5 hours each way. And when I went shark cage diving , I thought it was too far to drive for an hour-long boat ride. However, I cheaped out and didn’t go with the most reputable company, and with this tour you get a second boat cruise to go and spot whales. 

I also like this company because they offer a repeat experience within two years if you don’t see any sharks. And so I do think that getting to see sharks and whales makes the high amount of travel time worth it. So if you can, I would definitely recommend waiting and doing this combo tour in the winter rather than going shark cage diving by itself during summer.

This whale watching tour is a full day, guided tour from Cape Town to Hermanus. The tour offers you the best of both land-based and boat-based whale watching in the Western Cape.

The 120 km transfer from Cape Town to Hermanus takes you on the magnificent coastal route along Clarence Drive ,  past rugged mountains and sweeping bays. There should be time to pick up a coffee on the way or maybe the chance of watching some surfing at Gordons Bay. Whales are often seen from the coastal road and there are many lay-byes where you can stop to enjoy the magnificent views over False Bay.

A visit to the penguin colony in Betty’s Bay   is included in the package. The colony is great place to view these enchanting birds at close quarters, against the rugged scenery of Stony Point. The site was once the location of the Waaygat Whaling Station (1912-30) and remains of some of the old structures are still visible today – a poignant reminder of the persecution these animals have endured at the hands of man.

At 12pm  you board a 2 hr boat-based whale watching charter . The boat is officially licensed to conduct close encounters and may legally approach whales to within 50 meters, it is then up to the whales if they wish to investigate you and the boat more closely. Often their natural curiosity provides an up-close and personal encounter that will never to be forgotten.

The seaside town of Hermanus is widely regarded as the whale watching capital of South Africa.   Built upon low cliffs overlooking Walker Bay, there are many fantastic viewpoints from which to spot whales. Hermanus is known for the high concentrations of southern right whales that visit the bay to calve and mate. Humpback whales may also seen as they pass through the bay on their way to warmer waters. Other species to look out for include the elusive Bryde’s whale as well as bottlenose and common dolphins that visit the bay in search of sardine and other shoaling fish.

The afternoon is to be planned with your guide and a choice of activities and routes can be decided on-site. We recommend some time in Hermanus itself for land-based whale watching. Lunch may be taken in any number of restaurants on the sea front or you may combine it with a wine tasting or two in one the many estates in the area. Be sure to discuss these options with your driver/guide before your boat-based tour so that reservations can be made if necessary.

The afternoon may also be used to take a scenic whale watching flight . Viewing whales from the air is the perfect compliment to land and boat based whale watching. The aerial perspective provides a unique opportunity to observe  whale behaviors and  interactions and is one of the best ways to truly appreciate their size and numbers.

This whale watching day tour is open to all ages and life jackets for children are available on board. The tour includes time for lunch (excl.) in Hermanus and light refreshments en-route. Group rates are available on request.

Whale Route Full Day Tour

A great day, even if the whales to far to see them clearly We had great guide/driver who knew a lot and has a great sense of humor. The day was beautiful as well as the surroundings. Only downside was, that there was little time to enjoy the view when stopping & getting out to see the view (for pictures). Quickly taking pics and getting back in the bus seemed to be the goal. This instead of enjoying the great surroundings. But all in all, a great day!

Kayak trips range from 90 minutes to 3 hours although they normally take about  2 hours . The duration of the trip depends entirely on how far away the whales are. Kayaking is an additional cost of  R 800.00  per person with this package.

Southern Right Whales migrate to the coastal waters of South Africa, and within excess of 100 whales are known to migrate to the Hermanus area. These magnificent creatures can range from 15m to 23m in length and weigh between 40 and 100 Tonnes!

A day-trip out of Cape Town to the seaside town of Hermanus is definitely worthwhile. We recommend this journey to our discerning clients whether it is whale season or not.  We leave Cape Town and drive along the picturesque Clarens Drive, a well-maintained road that hugs the rugged coastline as it cuts through the steep Kogelberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains.  We can make a stop at the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, a showcase of lush and healthy endemic Fynbos flora thriving in a deep ravine in the Kogelberg Mountain.  After strolling through the gardens, we make our way to Hermanus to see if we can spot some of the Southern Right Whales who have migrated from the icy Antarctica to breed and calve in the warmth and protection of Walker Bay. If you take this tour during whale season, between July and November, the chances of us seeing whales is extremely high, as Hermanus boasts the best land-based whale watching in the world. If we don’t see the whales from land, we can take a boat trip which will increase our chances of seeing whales as well as dolphin species and other sea life.

Hermanus enjoys the reputation as the most popular Western Cape holiday town, and it is an interesting town to explore with excellent food and wine as well as quaint art and curio shops. We make time for you to explore the town before settling down to a scrumptious seafood lunch. Alternatively, there are some wonderful restaurants slightly out of town in the nearby Hemel and Aarde Vallei, ‘Heaven and Earth Valley’.

Hermanus is a small town an hour and a half along the east coast from Cape Town. Once famous for the healing powers of its ‘champagne air’ Hermanus now boasts another claim to fame.

Its the best land based whale watching site in the world. The Southern Right Whale visits the shores all along South Africa’s Western Cape coast every year from July to November to breed and calve. But nowhere offers views of this magical phenomenon quite like Hermanus.

With its 12 kilometers of cliff top paths which stretch the length of the town and offer unparalleled views of the bay where the whales like to frolic, Hermanus offers an unforgettable whale watching experience.

The most common whale seen in Hermanus is the Southern Right Whale, so called because it was considered by whalers the ‘right’ whale to hunt due to the fact that it floated when killed. Keen spotters however may also be lucky enough to see Humpbacks or Brydes whales and occasionally even Killer Whales.

Hermanus is the heart of the ‘whale trail’ and this can be seen in the culture of the town which embraces all things ‘whale’. Hermanus is famed for being the only town in the world to have its very own ‘whale crier’. Similar to the town criers of Europe, the whale crier announces the presence of whales in the bay by blowing his unique kelp horn. He is also a local expert on both the whales and the town of Hermanus itself and will gladly answer questions for you.

Hermanus also hosts a whale festival every September in the peak of the whale season. It is the only enviro-arts festival in South Africa combining themes of conservation and sustainability with those of arts and culture.

If whale watching from the cliff tops is not up close and personal enough for you there is also the option of boat based whale watching trips. They will take you closer to the whales then you ever dreamed of being and give you the opportunity to spot other wildlife such as dolphins, seals and otters.

If the weather is not conducive to whale watching, do not despair. There are plenty of other things to do in and around Hermanus. There are many great wine farms in the region which offer wine tastings and cellar tours as well as a number of fabulous art galleries which showcase local talent.

WINE AND WHALES

Combine your day out in Hermanus with a visit to a top Hemel en Aarde Winery. Half an hour from Hermanus in a valley with very dramatic scenery, we can visit a winery for food and wine pairing lesson and a barrel tasting with the winemaker. (subject to time of year!)
