Columbus' Top Golf Courses

Columbus has a storied golf history as the birthplace of Jack Nicklaus and the home of his Memorial Tournament, presented by Nationwide. In fact, Columbus is home to four courses that rank in the nation’s top 100, and two of them — The Golf Club and Muirfield Village Golf Club — rank among the top 100 in the world. Here are some of the top spots to hit the links around Columbus.

Airport Golf Course (AGC)

Located next to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, players can watch as planes take off and land right from the tee box. AGC is designed for all ages and skill sets, and with the course regularly updating its holes, each visit offers a new experience!

Champions Golf Course

This 18-hole upscale public course, located near Easton, was designed by the world-famous golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones Sr., and is one of the most challenging public courses in Central Ohio because of its rolling fairways, massive trees and wave-like greens.

Muirfield Village Golf Club

Easily central Ohio’s most famous course, located in Dublin’s Muirfield Village and founded by famed-golfer Jack Nicklaus, it is the site of the annual Memorial Tournament, a PGA Tour event. Muirfield has also hosted several national championships and international team competitions, including the 1992 U.S. Amateur, 1987 Ryder Cup, 2013 Presidents Cup and more, so guests can try the course that has been tested by many pros over the years.

Safari Golf Club

Located at The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and regularly named the city’s best public golf course, Safari offers the opportunity to explore world-class holes designed by course architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan at a great value.

Scioto Country Club Golf Course

Centrally located, regularly ranked among top golf courses in the country and designed by acclaimed architect Donald Ross, the Scioto C.C. course is where young Jack Nicklaus honed his craft under legendary teaching professional Jack Grout. The site has hosted nine different major championships including the U.S. Open (1926), the Ryder Cup (1931), the PGA Championship (1950), the U.S. Amateur Championship (1968), and the U.S. Senior Open Championship (1986 & 2016).

Tartan Fields Golf Club

This Arnold Palmer Signature Championship Course in Dublin offers elegant greens offset by a classic New England-style clubhouse featuring upscale dining and cocktails.

Turnberry Golf Course

Located 20 minutes east of Columbus, Turnberry is the only authentic Scottish-link style course in the state. The course consists of tall grasses, deep bunkers, elevated greens and plenty of ponds. Great for beginners and avid golfers alike!

RAINY DAY OPTIONS

Don’t let the rain get you down! Check out some of these alternatives that may not offer sweeping views of nature, but have plenty of opportunity to safely test your swing.

This newer golf experience allows guests to test their swing on some of the most famous courses in the world on their innovative simulators. Not only is this fun, but it provides some of the most accurate gameplay available from these top golf courses. A putting green and short game area are also available, as well as snacks and refreshments from a fully stocked bar.

Topgolf offers high tech driving ranges and fancy lounge areas that are perfect for grabbing a cocktail while teeing off with friends.

Westlake cookie crew inspires East Sider to start her own: Military Notes

  • Updated: Apr. 24, 2010, 1:30 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 24, 2010, 12:30 p.m.
  • Brian Albrecht, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A year ago, Marjorie Gettig read an item in this column about Fran Zimmerman of Westlake, who had started a group that baked cookies and sent them to troops overseas as part of the national

(Give A Little Support) campaign.

Gettig, 77, of Lyndhurst, figured she could do the same with a group on the East Side.

"I had to do something," she said. "I grew up in Britain in war time [World War II] and we were always doing things for the troops."

But when it came to today's combatants, "I realized I'd done nothing besides pray for them, and I thought they might like something to eat," Gettig added.

So she mobilized women in her morning water exercise class at the Hillcrest YMCA in Lyndhurst, and once each month that group -- and others who have since joined them -- gather at Gettig's house for some cookie-baking and camaraderie.

Strangers who know Gettig only as "the cookie lady" donate cash to help cover shipping costs.

Gettig said Zimmerman provides the names of Ohio military personnel serving overseas, and each month one lucky combatant can get a shipment of upwards of 400 cookies for distribution to his or her buddies.

Though she had gotten some personal thanks from recipients, "I don't expect people who are fighting to stop and write thank-you notes," Gettig said.

Besides, she has already been "paid."

As Gettig noted, "What a pleasure it gives to know you're helping somebody and letting them know that people care and haven't forgotten them."

The hunted becomes the hunter: The Central Ohio chapter of Safari Club International may have figured that since Ohio National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Rodney Randulic had already been targeted in Iraq, he should at least get a chance to do some hunting of his own.

They recently presented Randulic, 44, of Kent, with an all-expenses-paid safari to Africa.

Randulic was wounded in 2004 while serving with the 1485th Transportation Company in Dover. (He currently is assigned to the 1484th Transportation Company in Akron.)

During a combat patrol from his base near Balad, Iraq, Randulic's vehicle was hit by the blast from an improvised bomb, and he suffered a severe concussion and three broken vertebrae in his neck, according to a National Guard news release.

Randulic said brain fluid was seeping out of his sinuses and ears, and doctors told him his face had been shattered "just like taking a hard-boiled egg and hitting it on a table."

Now fully recovered, Randulic was chosen for the Safari Club honor from a group of nominees.

The avid hunter said he had always wanted to stalk wild game in Alaska or Africa but could never afford it, so this first hunting trip outside Ohio sometime next year is "a dream come true."

Jobs for vets: RecruitMilitary LLC of Loveland, Ohio, will hold an employment Opportunity Expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Progressive Field for veterans, current members of the National Guard and Reserves, their spouses and families. The event is produced in cooperation with HireVetsFirst of the U.S. Department of Labor, the American Legion , Purple Heart Services and the Military Spouse Corporate Career Network . For additional information, call 513-683-5020 or visit www.recruitmilitary.com .

Patriotism recognized: The Joint Veterans Commission of Cuyahoga County and Association of the U.S. Army (Newton D. Baker Cleveland Chapter) will host an Armed Forces Outstanding Patriot Award Dinner on Saturday, May 15, at the 100th Bomb Group Restaurant in Cleveland. The event will name one representative from each branch of the service, plus the Reserve and National Guard, as an "Outstanding Patriot" of the year. Tickets are $30 per person and the reservation deadline is May 7. For details, call 216-373-7799.

Send the word, send a card, over there: The United Service Organizations have joined with Nationwide Graphics in a "Send a Card to a Soldier" campaign in which family members and loved ones can send a free, personalized greeting card to service members.

Senders can go to snapio.com/uso and select from 30 possible cards, which are then printed by Nationwide Graphics and delivered by the USO.

Camouflaged cons: A recent report in the Military Times newspaper said the Army Criminal Investigation Command is warning the public to beware of con artists on the Internet who impersonate deployed servicemen and swindle civilians into sending money for fictitious laptops, plane tickets, "leave papers" or other phony expenses.

Officials say that perpetrators, using untraceable e-mail addresses, may claim that their units don't have telephones, they can't receive letters and aren't allowed access to personal bank accounts or credit cards.

Some exploit their victim's sense of patriotism and emotions, misrepresenting themselves as members of soldier-support programs or appropriating the names and photos of actual servicemen in creating profiles on social and dating media sites.

In brief, beware of new Internet friends and pseudo-soldiers seeking money.

If you have information for Military Notes, write to Brian Albrecht, The Plain Dealer, 1801 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44114; or e-mail him at [email protected]; or call 216-999-4853.
