Glastonbury Festival
Announcements, meet the three generations of a family behind an award-winning holiday park, the award-winning wall eden holiday park near burnham-on-sea.
WE chat to three generations of the Wall family; Dave, Andy and Colin, who run the award-winning Wall Eden Holiday Park near Burnham-on-Sea.
Dave (age 33): The farm originally was a dairy one. My Great Grandad bought it in 1927 and then my Grandad took it over in the 60s and we had a dairy herd here until the late 90s. Then unfortunately with milk quotas and various other things we couldn’t keep the business going. So, 2004 saw my Dad put the first log cabin in and then the next year we got another one, 2008 two more and then we added the other accommodation. I joined Dad in 2014, after gaining a business and management degree at Bournemouth University and spending two and a half years at Leonardo Helicopters, as part of their graduate programme.
It's now been ten years, and we've gone from just six lodges to now having 19 units of accommodation, a bar and cafe, farm shop and adventure centre. As well as the day-to-day operation, I manage the company growth through new corporate partnerships, including a range of leading holiday and experiential companies. We've created great relationships over the years, helping to continue growth as well as adding new facilities year on year.
Grandad still has some beef cattle on the moors, he keeps between 50-80 depending on the year. He’s still doing that every day in the summer. Me and my dad are more concerned about the business now. I run it day to day, I’m more of the managing director and he’s more of the executive, making new contacts and working on projects. The final say, that will be with me, overall I’m in charge of the staff and operations. There are eight employees over the winter then going up to 15 or 20 during the summer months. Our business was very summer focussed but now we have built the bar, the café and the farm shop we get a lot more winter trade and we also introduced hot tubs in 2021. The hot tubs have been a real success, you have to have them in because that’s what people are looking for - it’s quite a competitive market now.
Sports wise there’s fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding, they’re very popular between May and September, good for getting people in from the local area, they like to take part in the adventure activities. We’ve also got target sports; we’ve got shooting, archery and axe throwing as well. That’s different but very popular. Food wise we’re looking to offer proper lunches. At the moment we do pasties and sausage rolls but we’re hoping to do proper plated food as well as fried breakfasts in the morning. So that’s on the cards for this year and that’s exciting. We’re also hopefully reintroducing massage therapies. We used to do it prior to Covid, but the pandemic made that part of the business difficult so we closed it down. Now we are looking to bring it back because we can.
Winning the Gold as the Holiday Park of the Year was quite a boost for us all. We thought we would give it a go, put in an application and see what happens. So then it was quite a shock to win that category. Hopefully now we might go through to the South West Regional Awards. We’re proud that our little holiday farm has managed to beat the big boys. There’s other family connections too. My wife, Sami, does all the accounting and payroll; her Dad provides the apple juice and cider; not forgetting our three year old son, Luke, who likes to feed the sheep!
Andy (aged 59): Working with your family can at times be very stressful and it can offer up a number of challenges. But when those challenges have arisen in the past we have been able to work through them and come out better and stronger from those experiences. Certainly I think I would encourage people who are in a family business to work things through together should anything arise. My son is very operational in his approach and in the style of the way he works and I am very strategic. Though those two ways of operating might clash you actually need those two strengths in order to grow the business. My role is to help establish the vision and continue the growth and development of the business with interested parties such as charitable organisations, the army rehabilitation centre often use us. We look to work with local schools and to support children who require additional support outside traditional learning, mainstream schooling. We are wanting to offer people an experience to take away rather than just being somewhere to go on holiday. We’ve done corporate team building for a number of years that has attracted companies. Anything that we think can add value. I’m looking to create links with businesses and people who would want to use our site and bring their staff to us as a workplace training experience. Training here on site but mixed up with some adventure activities - team building for better relationships but also for staff retention. When I was a kid growing up on the farm it was an idyllic life; as a seven-year-old I was driving tractors, picking up hay bales, feeding calves and lambs; doing all the things I possibly shouldn’t have been doing. But times have changed and we’ve all moved on. Idyllic at the time.
Colin (aged 81): In a way I’m really the odd job man, I help out when I am needed. I’ve got a tractor still so if they want things moved around, then I do. Generally busy and generally keeping the site tidy.
The Holiday Park has done a brilliant job really. It’s a piece of land that wasn’t suiting anything else really unless you built houses on it and I don’t think that was going to happen. Diversification was necessary so that we could get a living out of it.
I definitely enjoy my role, it gives me something to get up for, I wouldn’t want to be sat around.

Between you and me…
Dave on Andy: Dad is always off swimming outdoor even when it’s freezing. He’s a bit crazy like that. Doesn’t matter about the weather he will be out there in his budgie smugglers
Dave on Colin: He likes to drop by for a coffee…and occasionally, a whisky
Colin on Dave: He goes to the gym every morning
Andy on Dave: Dave has an attention to detail and perfectionism - the glue that makes a successful business
Andy on Colin: Wherever Dad goes, his dog Towzer goes there too

Is Door County one of the best summer travel destinations in the U.S.? Voters will decide
The peninsula is one of 20 finalists in the online poll for the usa today 10best readers choice award.
DOOR COUNTY - We all know Door County is a tremendously popular destination for visitors in the summer – heck, all you gotta do is see the traffic heading up and down State 42 or 57 each weekend between Memorial Day and mid-October.
But now, the public can use its vote to prove to the nation that the Peninsula is one of the most popular and best places to visit in summer.
That's because Door County is one of 20 nominees in a USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice 2024 online poll that asks readers to vote for the Best Summer Travel Destination in the country. The poll is open until 11 a.m. Central time May 13, and voters can vote once per day in each of several different categories being polled.
A panel of travel experts nominated summer vacation spots from across the U.S. for consideration, and USA Today 10Best editors narrowed the field to the 20 finalists vying for the award. The winner and top 10 vote-getters will be revealed May 22.
In recognizing Door County as a nominee , the 10Best poll website cited the Peninsula's 300 miles of shoreline; numerous art galleries; five Wisconsin State Parks; plentiful opportunities for hiking, biking, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing or water skiing; and the solid craft beer and wine scene.
For Door County to win, or even make the top 10, it will have to beat some of the most famous summer vacation sites, as well as a few lesser-known locales, from one end of the country to the other. As of deadline, Door County was in 12th place.
The Peninsula's competitors in this poll include:
- Mackinac Island, Michigan, with its horse-drawn carriages in place of cars;
- Bar Harbor, Maine, an art, shopping food and cruise ship destination at the entrance to Acadia National Park;
- Badlands National Park and the Black Hills area of South Dakota;
- The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona;
- The waterside destinations of Catalina Island, California; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Ocean City, New Jersey; Ocean City, Maryland; San Juan Islands, Washington; and Gulf Shores and Ocean Beach, Alabama;
- Capitol Reef Country in Utah, with Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches national parks all in close proximity;
- Sevier County in Tennessee and Swain County in North Carolina, respectively on the north and south sides of Great Smoky Mountains National Park;
- The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, home to numerous wineries and vineyards;
- Cody, Wyoming, the "Rodeo Capital of the World" and near the southeastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park;
- The outdoor activities within the Laurel Highlands area of southwestern Pennsylvania;
- The eclectic mix of outdoors, wildlife, city life and Indigenous history in Juneau, Alaska;
- Sandusky, Ohio, with its famed Cedar Point amusement park and downtown attractions;
- The Space Coast of Florida, where Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center are located on the Atlantic Ocean shore.
If Door County wins this poll, it won't be the first time it's won a USA Today 10Best poll. In 2019, the Peninsula was elected by 10Best readers as the country's Best Destination for Fall Foliage .
That same year, a survey of baby boomers conducted by the AARP Travel Center ranked Door County as one of the top 12 fall vacation destinations for seniors in the U.S., based largely on the fall scenery. And last fall, an art icle on the Trips to Discover website listed Door County among its " 20 Best Places in the U.S. for Fall Colors ."
To vote, visit 10best.usatoday.com/awards/travel and select the "Best Summer Travel Destination" button .

Many eclipse visitors to northern New England pulled an all-nighter trying to leave

FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) — Thousands of visitors to northern New England communities in the path of the total solar eclipse were told to pack their patience for the trip. In some areas, they needed it for up to 12 hours after the event started, inching their way back home on packed interstates and secondary roads.
In New Hampshire, travelers were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the northern part of the state through at least 2 a.m. Tuesday, clogging up southbound Interstate 93. Southbound traffic on Interstate 89 also was heavy Monday evening. Southbound traffic was backed up in parts of Maine for several hours.
New England had clear skies and mild weather Monday, making for ideal viewing conditions for totality. In New Hampshire, people flocked to places such as Lancaster, Stewartstown, Colebrook and Pittsburg, near the Canada border.
But the roads were swarmed on the trip back, and traffic came to a standstill in some areas.
“People were just pulling over on the side of the road going to the bathroom, people were pulling over to shut their cars off, sleeping in their cars all over (U.S.) Route 3,” said Scott Lacourse, who left his vacation home in Pittsburg with his wife and their two dogs at 6:30 p.m. They got home to Londonderry, New Hampshire, nine hours later. That’s nearly three times longer than usual.
“Every rest area, any pull-off, anything, was full,” Lacourse said, adding that there also was no cell service.
Some people who had paper maps with them navigated their way through back roads. Others were running out of gas, and some broke down. Some people opted for the dangerous maneuver of driving across a median ditch and turning back onto northbound lanes. At least one car got stuck in the ditch. Some people who tried to stop for fast food along the way were met by a long line and the realization that the staff had stopped taking orders.
Lacourse and his wife, Sirena Holobinko Bogdahn, thought that if they left later in the day traffic would be cleared, but that wasn’t the case.
In spite of that, “it was well worth it,” she said of the eclipse viewing. “It was so amazing.”
John Martin, who was visiting from Massachusetts, described it as a “creep and a crawl” near Franconia, where Route 3 feeds into the Franconia Notch Parkway, a one-lane mountain pass in each direction, before expanding into the multilane interstate.
“You’re looking at your GPS trying to get off of 93 to find something a little quicker, and everybody else was thinking the same thing,” he told WMUR-TV.
New Hampshire state officials had warned travelers that the return could be slow going and encouraged people to stay in the area, which usually sees its most tourists during the summer and the fall foliage season, for a while.
“To our friends visiting from out of state, remember: there’s no sales tax in NH, so feel free to stay a bit longer!” Gov. Chris Sununu had said Friday.
Traffic also slowed to a crawl in other states.
In Maine, the traffic on Route 4 south from Rangeley to Farmington was heavy and slow several hours after the eclipse but never completely stopped, averaging 8 to 15 mph for much of the 40-mile drive along the two-lane rural road that threads mountains and hills.
In Paducah, Kentucky, which was in the path of totality, along with communities to the west in Illinois, thousands of people crossed the Ohio River after watching the eclipse. Post-eclipse traffic also moved very slowly in places such as southbound Interstate 65 in southern Indiana, and along southbound Interstate 81 in New York and Pennsylvania.
McCormack reported from Concord, New Hampshire. Associated Press journalist Robert Bukaty in Portland, Maine, contributed to this report.
