Spoken about in hushed tones by many a collector, Chateau Rayas - and all of its arms from Fonsalette to Chateau des Tours - is known as the greatest Grenache producer in the world. After his uncle Jacques' passing in 1997, Emmanuel Reynaud has continually crafted phenomenal wines from each estate that are sought the world over.

Several generations have run the Chateau Rayas, but Jacques Reynaud took the wines into the stratosphere, where Emmanuel has only served to keep them since his ascendance in 1997. Almost as reticent in accepting his fame as Jacques - who used to hide when cars would approach the Chateau - Emmanuel guards closely his recipe to the legendary wines escaping the estate every year.

We know that the vines are ancient and produce small, intense yields. There is no temperature-control in the cellars, and the wines ferment in concrete before being transferred to ancient barrels of several different sizes. That's it - no magic tricks, just patience; the wines will ferment for about a year, and then will be aged in bottle at the estates until they are deemed ready to drink; routinely vintages are released nearly a decade after their fermentations conclude.

Meet the Producer

Bright red. Heady aromas of candied red fruits, cherry pit and anise, with a suave floral note emerging with aeration. Rich but lively, offering sharply focused bitter cherry and raspberry flavors that are given spine by juicy acidity. Fine-grained tannins give grip to the persistent finish, which strongly echoes the cherry note.

The spirit of Jacques Reynaud, the godfather of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is always present at the storied estate of Château Rayas. When this legendary founder died suddenly in 1997, his wife asked their nephew, Emmanuel Reynaud, to take the reins at both Château Rayas and Château de Fonsalette. Already making wines at his father's Château des Tours, Emmanuel agreed. Somewhat reclusive and to be found working his vineyards at most any time of day, every day, Emmanuel does not revel in the fame and notoriety that come with making such sought-after and acclaimed wines. Instead, he continues to quietly but successfully carry the mantle of his famous forebears, producing hauntingly aromatic wines at his three estates: Château Rayas, Château des Tours, and Château de Fonsalette. Located in Sarrians, just outside Vacqueyras, the Reynaud family purchased Château des Tours in 1935. The old house is flanked on both sides by tall towers (hence “des Tours”). This is Emmanuel's family estate, which he took over from his father, Bernard, in 1989. Emmanuel is at heart a farmer, and here he grows food for his family — olives, grains, and, importantly, grapes. Like all Reynaud vineyards, these are tended with the same organic methods, manually plowed, all hand-harvested much later than other producers, and centered around a reverence for old-vine Grenache. With 40 hectares of vineyards surrounding the house, Emmanuel produces Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône, and Vin De Pays, all from estate fruit. His wines are made with minimal to no sulfur during vinification. Whole cluster fermentation commences naturally without the inoculation of yeasts in underground concrete tanks and the wines are aged partly in oak casks. The parcels are vinified separately before assemblage takes place in enamel-lined tanks and bottled. The resulting wine is unfined and unfiltered. There is a a clear throughline in all the wines produced by Emmanuel — a unique weighty, aromatic, complex, and savory signature of all the wines that ranks them among the most well-regarded, sought-after bottles of the appellation.

À l’ouverture le matin il est déjà délicieux avec cet adroit mélange de puissance aromatique, d’élégance de texture et cette gourmandise assumée. Neuf heures plus tard, il s’est affiné considérablement et s’est "agourmandi"! (Néologisme, i.e. devenu plus gourmand). Face aux vins du domaine en appellation vin de pays et Côtes du Rhone, on monte ici plusieurs marches en termes de raffinement, tout en gardant le coté jouissif du fruit gourmand, poivré, plein de garrigue et de bonheur. Un grand Vacqueyras, ou un mini Rayas? 93–94 pts

[This flight included the 2015 and 2016 Tours Cotes du Rhone as well as the 2012 Tours Vacqueyras] Nose was lighter compared the Tours, with more cinnamon and clove spice and black olives. On the palate, also very intense but holding great balance with its higher acid. Showing quite plush, but not over extracted black stone fruits, black bruised plums, slight fig, strawberry jam, brown sugar, a touch of leather and baking spices. Tertiary flavors have started to develop, but it was still drinking rather young. The favorite among the table for this flight, it was a toss up between this and the '15 Cotes du Rhone, but this was showing a smidge better tonight. 94-95

Rayas / Pignan / Fonsalette / Tours Tasting (Scottsdale, Arizona USA) : This was the surprise of the night in a big tasting of Rayas/Tours/Fonsalette/Pignan. Not that I didn't expect it to be good, but it was getting unanimous nods of approval around the table. Showing more precision and detail than the 15 & 16 Tours Cote du Rhones, but to be fair it also had more age. I expect this could age for the long term, but given how appealing it is today I am doubtful my remaining bottles will ever see extended age.

Ruby colored with some browning around the edges. Gains body in the glass until eventually settling into a robust profile of raspberry and macerated strawberry with accents of a young tawny port. Moderate tannins keep the finish interesting.
