If that's the case, he's closing at his absolute peak, riding high off 2016's Grammy-winning hit "Redbone" and 2018's era-defining anthem "This Is America."

Gambino takes the stage backed by a 10-piece band and a crew of dancers, plus a flashy light show. But he remains the focus of it all, shifting seamlessly from swaggering soul man to intense MC and sprinkling hints of new material amid his biggest hits. If Gambino's introduction to the rap game was as an endearing introvert, he's now the ultimate showman — a once-in-a-generation talent at the top of his game.

Musician, actor, writer, producer, director, comedian — the man born Donald Glover is the ultimate 21st-century Renaissance man. Raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia, Glover broke into the industry writing for ‘30 Rock' and starring in the NBC sitcom ‘Community.' 

Meanwhile, he'd been releasing brainy, left-field rap mixtapes under his Childish Gambino alter ego (a name he'd randomly coined thanks to an online Wu-Tang Clan name generator). By his second album, 2015's ‘Because the Internet,' he'd honed his craft and drifted further into singing — and into his first Grammy nomination. 

On 2016's ‘Awaken, My Love!,' Glover ventured into full-blown funk mode, channeling George Clinton and Sly Stone. "Redbone," the album's breakthrough hit, would win a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance. That same year saw the premiere of ‘Atlanta' — the hard-hitting and hilarious FX series in which Glover writes, executive produces, and often stars. 

Many saw the show as Glover reaching his final form — but then came 2018's "This Is America," a song and video that summed up the current moment in American culture with gut-wrenching precision. There's no ceiling to what this multidisciplinary talent can do.

Childish Gambino’s live performance was the best I’ve ever seen in my life!! His singing was beautiful (he hit *all* of his high notes) and his rapping and dancing were incredible! He kept the crowd lively and it was an exciting and captivating performance!

Attending the "This is America" concert in Houston was the most extraordinary concert experience that I've ever had. Childish Gambino is a complete professional, class-act, and PRODIGY. The concert started at the correct posted time with Rae Sremmurd opening and really pumping the crowd full of energy. Less than 30 minutes after Rae Sremmurd finished, Gambino was on the stage. He started out in the center of a long catwalk just standing motionless with eyes closed as if to preparing mentally or maybe silently praying, who knows? The crowd went wild, snapping photos, screaming, cheering, etc. The anticipation built. He went on to rap, sing, dance, talk, interact with the crowd (physically entering the crowd) with a lavish amount of energy, focus, and love for the next 90 minutes. His intensity was supreme and really drew me in. The concert flew by so quickly as I was completely engulfed in the live band, the huge moving lighted walls, his remarkable voice, his facial expressions, his body movements, dancing and footwork, and the roaring crowd! Childish Gambino is a prodigy and I felt that I was in the presence of greatness. I was completely overwhelmed by his performance. Although he stated it would be Gambino's last tour, I hope to see him again live.

This was a great concert and it was priced very good for the production.

Childish Gambino (Born Donald Glover on September 25th 1983), is a rapper, comedian, writer, actor and producer raised in Georgia, US and based in New York City, US. He has released two studio albums, two E.P’s and seven mix tapes since 2008.

If you’ve ever seen an episode of NBC’s smash hit comedy Community then one would be forgiven for thinking that you’ve seen Donald Glover do what he does best. He’s a force of nature on the show, charismatic, magnetic, funny as all hell, but that’s not the only thing he does to a professional degree.

No, the man’s also a rapper with a top ten selling album and two gold certified singles to his name, among many other releases and guest appearances. He’s also going to be Spider-Man in an upcoming Marvel cartoon. Clearly this man’s sheer talent is a threat and we should all be incredibly suspicious of him.

At least we would be if he wasn’t so damn good at everything he does. Taking his name from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator (of course), Glover released “Sick Boi”, his first mixtape in 2008 while he was still on the writing staff for another NBC comedy hit 30 Rock (whose head writer and lead actress Tina Fey would later guest on one of his tracks) and Glover has gone from strength to strength since then.

His atmospheric production skills fashion something entirely new out of classic influences like Prince, Michael Jackson and D’Angelo which in turn complements his whip smart rapping spectacularly. With his theatrical flow and unmistakeable voice, he’s a wit through and through, bringing his trademark oddball humour to the fore in hits like 3005 and Sweatpants. His is a talent that flies in the face of every stereotype you might have of an actor turned musician, and he’s only just getting started.

Childish Gambino, also known by his birth name Donald Glover is quite an accomplished man. Besides being a successful comedian and actor he has gone under the name Childish Gambino and produced some pretty damn cool music. Entering the set in SDSU Open Air theater in San Diego the crowd roars.

The set looks like an urban street corner and is dark and ominous. As a beat comes into play after he enters the stage, the crowd prepares for the glory yet to come. As he sits playing his piano, the crowds anticipation is wild and they are losing control.

Pretty soon, a full band is on stage playing instruments and a light show begins to pierce the darkness. Finally a catchy dance beat comes in and Childish Gambino begins rapping and the crowd sings along with the favorite lines. Purple and blue lights set the scene and mood as they strobe and switch back and forth.

Childish Gambino alternates between fast rapping verses and then into singing - truly showing his range of talent which is very impressive. The show is very entertaining visually and aurally. Overall this was a fantastic experience and I am so glad to have seen it.

Childish Gambino’s diverse talents are evident from the moment he steps on to stage. He sings, raps and plays the piano, all brilliantly. The anticipation of the crowd is incredibly intense, and the roar from the crowd when Gambino finally emerges is incredible. Since the rise of his musical career in 2008, Gambino has built quite the fan following and the devotion of his fans is evident from the excited looks on the audience’s faces. Gambino starts the show on his piano, hushing the crowd instantly. Gambino takes hip hop to new heights in his arrangements, and sets quite the atmosphere. He alternates between singing and rapping, and his set list becomes more and more upbeat as the night goes on. The set was minimalist, dark and atmospheric with the occasional strobe flashing and brightening up the darkness. Gambino performs all his hits, placing particular emphasis on albums ‘Kauai’ and ‘Because the Internet’.

Childish Gambino, an artist who has progressed from the world of TV and into music and looking at the huge amount of fans packed into this venue it was clearly an intelligent career move.

Since his first album was released in 2011, Donald Glover has been critically praised as a creative force in hip hop. His work, often very conceptual is brought to life onstage in a similar way. A dark, brooding set that looks more like that of a dodgy backstreet than a huge stage sets the tone well and as Glover steps out the applause are large but not outrageous, similarly to how you would applaud a piece of theatre.

As he takes to the piano and begins a complex hand picking of tracks from his second album 'Because The Internet' which act as one lengthy and complex introduction. A mammoth seven songs in before the audience are offered reprieve by 'The Palisades' and '3005'. Throughout the set, Childish Gambino quietly demonstrates why he is a driving force in taking hip hop to a new place and the audience watch often astounded by this young, new artist.

The concert was absolutely surreal. Starting with Vince staples was amazing where he kept it simple with a regular black hoodie and a few videos as a background, while he was absolutely killing all of his songs. Next there was a short intermission in between the two acts where everyone was able to meet and everyone was for the most part friendly. Than Childish Gambino came to stage and was able to please the entire crowd with some lesser known songs. In about the middle of his performance he started playing "This is America" where it was probably his most hype song. Later playing other popular songs such as "3005" and finished off with "RedBone"

Overall the show was great. After he performed This is America the audience knew there was supposed to be an encore because many of us saw the set list. We sat there for about 20 minutes until the sound engineers started packing up and ushers telling us the show was over. There's word that he injured himself while performing but it hasn't been confirmed. Due to the concert being cut short, we missed out on him performing Redbone, 3005 & Sweatpants. The 50 minutes he was on stage was incredible, I just wish we could've seen the rest seeing as how this is Childish Gambino's last tour.

last night i attended childish gambino’s concert in the O2 arena. he was an amazing performer and really made our night with his dancing and comical personality. the energy he had whilst on stage completely transferred into the crowd and everyone had a great time. he sung a variety of songs from 3 of his albums along with some new songs which were received very well. gambino seemed like a real genuine guy when he connected with his fans and told the crowd stories from his life. i would definitely see him again live, such a talented artist.

The concert was nothing short of amazing. The experience was vibe from the time he touched the stage to the time he left. I'm sad that this is his last tour, but I'm hopeful that he'll be back to surprise his fans and supporters. I enjoyed the thought and work that he put into his performance and visuals. I would definitely go a second and third time if I could.

Really great show by a great artist. Let down somewhat by a venue that needs to sort out its ticketing / entry systems and staff, lots of miscommunication had hundreds of people really struggling to get inside for the start.

Best show I have ever been to. He is an amazing performer, super entertaining and engaging. He makes the show fun even for those of us up in the cheap seats. I wish we could have spent another couple of hours there!

Donald Glover Teases A Childish Gambino Tour And Reveals A Couple Things About The Run

With Donald Glover devoting much of his energy to acting in recent years, the future of his music as Childish Gambino has remained uncertain. There has been some clarity lately, though: Earlier this month, Glover broke down his plan for his final two albums as Childish Gambino . Now he has shared even more about what his upcoming Gambino goings-on will entail.

During a recent GILGA Radio broadcast, an advertisement-style announcement said, “Childish Gambino New World Tour this summer. Coming to an arena near you. Are you ready?” Glover later shared an Instagram post about it, featuring a simple graphic for The New World Tour and a link to a website, thenewworldtour.com . There, there’s an email sign-up form to be updated with more information when it becomes available.

So, to summarize: What we know about the tour right now is that it’s called The New World Tour , it will take place in arenas, and it’s set to kick off this summer. Dates and information about tickets have yet to be revealed.

Elsewhere during that same broadcast, Glover teased two new songs, one featuring Kanye West and the other featuring Kid Cudi . As NME notes , the Kudi collab is called “Warlords” and previously leaked in 2021.

Childish Gambino’s New World Tour Teased Ahead of Final Albums: 'Are You Ready?'

Donald Glover has also been previewing new music in recent days, including tracks with Ye and Kid Cudi.

This weekend, Donald Glover and/or Childish Gambino fans received official word that a new tour is indeed on the horizon. While early details on the trek remain scarce as of this writing, the announcement itself was tucked into the latest edition of GILGA Radio .

"Childish Gambino New World Tour this summer," the announcement said. "Coming to an arena near you. Are you ready?"

No additional info has yet been made available. However, fans quickly uncovered a website for The New World Tour, complete with a mailing list signup option .

Gambino’s past tours have been undeniably memorable affairs. His I Am Donald run in 2011, for example, saw Glover essentially opening for himself by first performing a standup set, then taking the stage in Gambino form mere moments later.

The This Is America tour in 2018 was widely referred to as possibly being the final batch of Gambino shows. In fact, Gambino himself said as much during the opening stop in Duluth. The moniker itself has also been the subject of frequent retirement speculation, all of which led nicely into this month's official announcement that what's next from Glover and company will indeed mark the final Gambino releases .

First up is Atavista , which fans will note is a final version of 3.15.20 . The last Gambino album will arrive next, per comments from Glover on a previous GILGA Radio livestream, and serves as the soundtrack for a new film titled Bando Stone & The New World.

DG has also been previewing new music as of late, including a collaboration with Ye that's been met with immediate love from fans. This pairing is especially noteworthy for Glover, who often spoke about Ye's influence during interviews earlier into his career. In 2011, the same year he opened for himself on the I Am Donald tour, Gambino put his own spin on the MBDTF track "All of the Lights."

Childish Gambino is rolling out a new era of music. On Monday’s episode of his Gilga Radio show, the musician played two new songs featuring Kid Cudi and Kanye West , and also announced an arena run of shows called The New World Tour.

After playing Olivia Rodrigo’s “Obsessed” on the radio show and a voice declaring, “If Childish Gambino wants to do something, you let him do it,” Gambino debuted the new Kanye track, seemingly titled “Say Less.”

“You n—-s talk shit. You n—-s cheapskates. You n—-s talk show. You n—-s Ziwe. You n—-s deepfake. You n—-s AI/But you’d never have your mother sitting courtside,” Gambino raps before Ye’s verse.

Gambino also debuted a second song featuring Cudi, titled “Warlords.” The track arrives just days after Cudi seemed to throw shade at Gambino on social media. “Kid Cudi, if you got a problem, I’m not here for the beef. Just talk to me. Actually talk to people,” Gambino said on his debut Gilga Radio episode last week.

As for the tour, Gambino has yet to announce dates for it, though he teased arena shows on Gilga Radio. The musician last hit the road in 2019 for the This Is America Tour. The second episode of Gilga radio also featured appearances from Nathan Fielder, Ayo Edebiri, and Eddie Murphy.

“We’re releasing  Atavista , but after that, there’s the final Childish Gambino album — a soundtrack for the fans,” he revealed during a broadcast last weekend,  via Uproxx . His Instagram Live included a teaser for the original soundtrack to  Bando Stone & the New World , which he said will be the final Gambino album.

He had previously said he was retiring the Childish Gambino moniker,  telling HuffPo  during a promo event for  Atlanta  in 2017, “There’s nothing worse than like a third sequel, like a third movie, and we’re like, ‘again?’” he said. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

Before Donald Glover  gets ready to retire his Childish Gambino  alter-ego, he’ll be embarking on an arena tour that will be assisted by Rae Sremmurd , as Gambino announced back in March. On Monday (April 30), the 34-year-old unveiled five additional tour dates to extend the North American leg well into October with help from Long Beach’s own Vince Staples.

The first new date finds those in the NYC area in luck, because the  Atlanta  creator will be performing at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 15, which marks back-to-back MSG shows following the already announced Sept. 14 NYC set alongside Rae Sremmurd.

The tour continues into October with Vince Staples relieving Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi  for a five-show trek from the West Coast to middle America. The Staples-assisted dates begin on Oct. 2 with two California shows before traversing through Phoenix, Denver and finally culminating the 19-date tour in Nashville on Oct. 12.

With the release of teasers for two distinct tracks on Gilga Radio, Gambino strategically fuels excitement for his forthcoming announcement regarding ‘The New World Tour’. During the stream, Gambino treated fans to a snippet of a captivating song featuring Ye.

It's the new year! Okay well, it's a month into the new year but with all the quasi holidays, back-to-work dread and Hottest 100 anxiety does January really count?

For the purpose of this article we're going to say nah, not really.

Gather round, friends, and stare into our triple j crystal ball to see what we think will kick off in 2023.

Things that have been locked in and are coming our way.

New music from Childish Gambino

This is happening, people! And we have PROOF in the form of Donald Glover AKA  Childish Gambino walking the Golden Globes red carpet saying he's in the studio, cooking up new tunes.

We FINALLY get The Kid LAROI's debut album

No, you didn't read that wrong, despite achieving worldwide dominance – The Kid LAROI hasn't even dropped his first album yet!

But all that's going to change in 2023.

Here's what we know: the album is called The First Time... that's kinda it.

But will it contain the much-mythologised Tame Impala collab ? Only time will tell.

Gorillaz are getting crunchy

They've already come back after 12 years to land a track in Hottest 100 of 2022 top 20, so now all that's left for Gorillaz to do is drop their new album, Cracker Island .

Beyond 'New Gold', expect to hear features from Thundercat , Tame Impala , Stevie Nicks , Bad Bunny , Beck and more when this one blesses us on February 24.

Loungin' with Lana

There's been no shortage of new music from Ms Del Ray in the past couple years and 2023 will be no different with her new LP Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd out on March 10.

Expect to hear production from Mike Hermosa , Jack Antonoff , Drew Erickson , Zach Dawes , and Benji , and features Jon Batiste , Bleachers , Father John Misty , Tommy Genesis and more.

To promote the album Lana put up a single billboard in Tulsa, Oklahoma AKA the hometown of her cop ex-boyfriend so expect things to get personal.

Gecs on Gecs on Gecs

Not only are we getting the first new 100 Gecs album since their 2019 debut 1000 Gecs but we're getting 1000x their first album with 10,000 Gecs slated for release in March.

The hyperpop duo have exploded since we all had to wrap around our heads around Stupid Horse pre-pando. Expect to hear tunes like 'mememe' and 'Doritos & Fritos' on the new LP as well as this collab with Skrillex.

Other artists that have locked in albums for 2023: Mac DeMarco, Cub Sport, Matt Corby, DMA's, Kali Uchis, Arlo Parks, Grimes, Khalid, A$AP Rocky + more.

Things that we're pretty sure are gonna happen but are hedging out bets just in case.

Phoebe Bridgers becomes a scream queen

Yeah yeah, Phoebe's touring Australia right now with Laneway and her new album with Boygenius is out on March 31 – BUT did you know we might get a Phoebe Bridgers/A24 crossover in 2023?!

The singer will appear in the movie I Saw The TV Glow alongside an ensemble cast that features Snail Mail's Lindsey Jordan and also Fred Durst for some reason.

According to director Jane Shoebridge, filming wrapped up in August last year, so fingers crossed we get to see Phoebe on the big screen in 2023.

TikTok gets into the streaming game

Rumours have been bubbling about TikTok's mysterious new streaming service since verified social profiles baring the name TikTok Music started popping up in April last year.

Considering what a powerful tool TikTok has become in music discovery we can see this going one of two ways:

• 1. TikTok Music is so good and convenient to listeners that it creates a rift in the music streaming arms race.
• 2. TikTok Music becomes such a headache for its owners that it opens the floor for another short-video platform to usurp their crown.

Either way there's a good chance Australia will get TikTok Music before anyone else, as Business Insider reported that TikTok's parent company ByteDance registered 'TikTok Music' for trademark in Australia all the way back in November 2021.

Fingers crossed for Splendie

No one really knows who's going to take the top space for Splendour 2023 headliner but based off our very scientific calculations (read: gut feelings) here's who we have pegged.

Of course, the DREAM headliner would be a supergroup of all six.

With Bey announcing the US leg of her Renaissance World Tour, it's only a matter of time before she announces her Aussie leg.

The Great Kanye West Recession

To put it lightly, Kanye West didn't have the best press in 2022.

He hung out with known Neo-Nazis, got banned off Twitter for anti-Semitism and forced a lot of us to have conversations about when it's moral to separate the art from the artist.

Ye's been pretty quiet for a couple month but if he continues on this path it's not unreasonable that streaming services start to take notice and start removing him from platforms.

But hey, he could always do what his buddy Donald Trump did with Truth Social and create his own streaming service…

Frank Ocean comes back to us

Yes, we've all been personally victimised by Frank Ocean dangling his first album since 2016's  Blonde  in front of our face.

But all signs point to go in 2023; he's headlining Coachella, he's cleared his Instagram and he's been spotted in the studio multiple times.

What we wouldn't give to be able to put this in definite.

Way out guesses but hey, stranger things have happened?

Ticketmaster goes to jail (figuratively)

Prepare for a cup of tea because Ticketmaster is in some hot water at the moment.

ICYMI, they royally beefed up the ticket release for Taylor Swift's US tour with fans complaining of hours long waits, overblown 'dynamic' pricing and just plain getting locked out of tickets by the platform.

This has caused a lot of people, including the US government, to look into how Ticketmaster leverages its monopoly (it merged with Live Nation in 2010) to negatively impact fans and artists in order to line their already bulging pockets.

While none of the US's legal smoke has blown to Australia yet, considering Live Nation owns local festivals Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Harvest Festival and Spilt Milk, any huge moves overseas could shake things up in Aus.

Okay, so we're basing this entirely on photos of railings but it would be pretty cool, right?!

The Wiggles add Yung Gravy to the line-up

The Wiggles have gone from a group of quartet to octet in the last year so it's not unreasonable to think that they'd add a member to increase their pop culture cred.

They've already flirted with the idea when they almost performed with Lil Nas X at Falls over the holidays.

But here's our pitch, what are there a lot of at Wiggles concerts? Children.

What do children usually have? Mothers or mother-like figures.

During a ‘gilga radio’ livestream..

Albeit unofficially, new Childish Gambino music has surfaced.

After confirming he’s got two more albums in the archives to release under the moniker – ATAVISTA , which is an updated iteration of 3.15.20 as well as another “final” project dubbed Bando Stone & the New World slated to drop after that – Donald Glover has taken to his GILGA Radio show to keep listeners in the loop. On last night’s GILGA livestream, which marked the second episode of the series, he previewed unreleased tracks with Ye and Kid Cudi .

Donald Glover announces tour, previews music from upcoming Childish Gambino albums

Donald Glover recently revealed that he has two new Childish Gambino albums on the way, and will release the soundtrack to his film,  ‘Bando Storm and the New World ’ – marking his final albums released under that name. The 40-year-old has also previewed new music during a stream on Instagram Live, including a collaboration with Ye – the artist formerly known as Kanye West.

Glover teased, per Uproxx : “We’re releasing Atavista, but after that, there’s the final Childish Gambino album, a soundtrack for the fans.” Before Glover hosted the GILGA Radio stream on Instagram, Glover stated that the first album will be a finished version of his surprise release “3.15.20,” which dropped in March 2020 under the original title “Atavista” along with a vinyl release.  He then said that he will follow that release with the last installment of the Gambino project, which will serve as the soundtrack to Bando Storm and the New World.  Glover shared: “the project I put out, ‘3.15.20’ that no one’s ever heard of, people didn’t even know I put it out, it was originally titled ‘Atavista,’ it was supposed to be ‘Atavista.’ But we put it out quickly, I didn’t master or mix it, I just kind of put it out. I was going through a lot, n—s thought everybody was going to die because it was the pandemic. We put it out, we finished it, it’s ‘Atavista,’ we’re putting that out. But then after that, there’s a Childish Gambino album, the final Childish Gambino album.”

Childish Gambino a.k.a Donald Glover has previewed new music with Kanye West and Kid Cudi on social media.

The rapper, actor, writer and comedian took to Instagram Live for the latest edition of his GILGA Radio show, during which he previewed two new tracks, one featuring Kanye West, and the other featuring Kid Cudi.

On the first untitled track, Kanye raps about wanting to record a follow-up to 2011’s ‘Watch The Throne’ with Jay-Z . Kanye raps: “ N****s waiting on The Throne like Hov say yes / I took my shoes out the store, they the new Payless / That’s the New God Flow, but I don’t pray less .”

The next track, which features Kid Cudi, is reportedly titled Warlords, and was originally leaked sometime in 2021.

Following the end of the Instagram Live session, Glover posted announced an upcoming tour, dubbed ‘The New World Tour’. Little else is known of the tour so far, but fans can pre-register their interest via thenewworldtour.com for updates.

Earlier this month, Glover revealed that he will release two more albums under the Childish Gambino moniker : ‘Atavista’ and ‘Bando Stone & The New World’. Glover also shared that ‘Atavista’ – an updated version of his previously released ‘3.15.20’  – will be dropping soon (though no release date has been shared at the time of writing). ‘Bando Stone & The New World’ will follow, and will double as the soundtrack for his upcoming movie of the same name,   which is set to be released this summer.

‘3.15.20’ was awarded four-stars by NME  when it was initially released in 2020: “Glover’s willingness to share such a candid moment on record is particularly interesting given his past proclivity towards keeping his private life largely offline, and may be a sign that the star is beginning to let his guard down as the outside world continues to try to peer in.

“It’s an approach that Glover is applying to his musical output at least, with the impressive ‘3.15.20’ well worth the wait — we’ll keep our fingers firmly crossed, then, that he doesn’t give in to his past evasiveness and take the record down again…”
