Take a Virtual Tour of the International Space Station (Video)

Here's your chance to see what the inside of the ISS is actually like.

virtual tour of the iss

Not everyone will get the chance to explore space, but this virtual tour of the International Space Station (ISS) comes pretty close.

Google Arts & Culture is a treasure trove for the history, art, and science lover. This platform has been around for a few years, but since the coronavirus outbreak started it has become a must-see for anyone who wants to enrich themselves during lockdown.

Virtual tours of museums, national parks, and popular tourist attractions have certainly been excellent ways to educate and entertain yourself at home, but there’s another collection of online tours and exhibits that space and science lovers should definitely see — including a 360-degree tour of the ISS .

This virtual tour uses Google Street View to explore the space station as if you’re really inside it. Move through the narrow tunnels, see the massive amounts of equipment, and generally experience what it’s like to be a real astronaut.

In addition, there are lots of other ways to explore space on Google Arts & Culture. One fascinating online exhibit is dedicated to the moon landing (which is coming up on its 51st anniversary this year). Take a deeper dive into the Apollo space program by exploring the hundreds of photos from the Apollo 11 mission, as well as stories on the Columbia Memorial Space Center and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.

Google Arts & Culture also has an amazing fact sheet that details 10 “out-of-this-world” facts about the International Space Station (ISS), which is perfect to help kids supplement their online learning experience while most schools are closed. Plus, there is a collection of eight truly stunning photographs from space that will make you appreciate our little blue planet even more.

There are also dozens of specific online exhibits to choose from, such as an exhibit focused on women in space, an exploration of aviation history, and a collection of videos that are all about space exploration.

For more information, take the virtual tour, or see an online space exhibit, visit the Space Exploration page on Google Arts & Culture.

ISS Virtual Tour: Experience the Wonder of the Space Station

October 23, 2017

Visitors to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (KSC VC) can now experience the wonder and excitement of the ISS by embarking on a breathtaking interactive tour of the space station. The ISS virtual tour, co-developed by CASIS and NASA, launched in July 2015 and debuted at KSC VC in December.

Built in 6K resolution, the ISS virtual tour covers the entire habitable area of the ISS inside and out in extraordinary detail. After examining the exterior of the ISS with the beautiful backdrop of the Earth below, visitors can go inside the space station.

As visitors “walk” through each module, they can explore “hotspots” that contain information about the hardware and facilities on the ISS. The tour also includes videos of astronauts talking about what it is like to live and work in space, and visitors can learn about current experiments onboard the ISS. The tour includes 15 scenes, more than 150 hotspots, upwards of 50 videos, and 250 images and other media.

Visitors interact with the ISS virtual tour through a mobile 55-inch touch-screen display with stereo surround sound. The ISS virtual tour is a one-of-a-kind educational tool for a wide range of large-scale audiences, making it perfect for KSC VC, which has a yearly attendance of more than one million people.

Three ISS virtual tour units are currently on display in high-traffic areas of KSC VC, and a fourth unit is being used as a traveling school exhibit for educational outreach, said Darlene Koenig, vice president of new business development at KSC.

“The ISS virtual tour is a vital new experience for our public education programs to tell the story and the ‘why’ of the ISS to the participating public who visit KSC VC,” Koenig said.

Additional ISS virtual tour displays at other venues, such as museums, schools, trade shows, retail locations, and other public places, are planned for the future. This amazing new tool will allow people of all ages to explore the ISS in a way never before possible.

A European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut has offered the public a virtual tour of the International Space Station (ISS). Five space agencies namely NASA, JAXA, Roscosmos, CSA, ESA, and their contractors work together to manage the ISS, which is the largest space station ever constructed, in low Earth orbit. Andreas Mogensen made his way back to Earth from his six-and-a-half-month stay on ISS in the middle of March. He documented his time at the station as a member of NASA's Crew-7 mission by recording a video inside and showing it to his social media followers.

In an elaborate post that Andreas Mogensen posted on X (formerly Twitter) on April 12, the ESA astronaut revealed, “It's been a month since I left the International Space Station. One of the very last things that I did on undock day, was film a tour of the Space Station. It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you. Whenever I will miss my time onboard ISS, and especially my crewmates, I will have this video to look at.”

Andreas Mogensen first provided a sneak peek into the front section of the space station. Above it, there was a SpaceX Dragon craft, which brought him to Earth on March 12. The roughly 114-by-22-foot Columbus module, which the ESA supplied as a science lab back in 2008 could be spotted in the clip. Viewers could also make out the smaller Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) kept across the lab. Also known as Kibo, it was built soon after the construction of Columbus.

Several more ISS amenities, like the workstations, storage units, restrooms, exercise equipment, several docking nodes, and even the station kitchen, were shown by Andreas Mogensen through first-hand observation. The cupola, which offers an unparalleled 360-degree panorama of the Earth as well as an impressive look at the space station's overall size, is unquestionably the most stunning spot on the entire International Space Station (ISS).

The International Space Station

Chances are the coronavirus outbreak has curtailed any ambitious summer vacation plans you may have had. But as far as Google is concerned, that doesn’t need to be the case. In fact, the internet giant wants to take you to space.

Google Arts & Culture now offers a full, 360-degree virtual tour of the International Space Station, and it’s accessible to anyone with internet access. Making use of the company’s Street View technology, the tour lets you explore every single nook and cranny of the 21-year-old space station without the decades of hard work and preparation that would normally require.

While you won’t get to experience the feel of floating through the space station, Google’s digital exhibition feels like the next best thing. You can travel down any of ISS’s long and winding tunnels and look around all of its equipment-packed rooms. You can even check out the crew quarters and see some of the astronauts’ personal items.

In addition to the tour, Google has also whipped up a fun and educational ISS-themed informational program. Aimed specifically at younger virtual space tourists, the show attempts to illustrates what life on the station is like. It covers everything from what and how the visiting astronauts eat to the effect that zero-gravity takes on their bodies while they orbit the Earth.

Google Arts & Culture

If your virtual trip to the ISS has only managed to stoke your appetite for more space content, Google has you covered. The station tour is just one of several digital exhibitions Arts & Culture has on its Space Exploration page. Other exhibitions of interest include a closer look at the moon landing , a tribute to women who have gone to space , as well as scores of high-definition video content shot from space. Of course, if your virtual traveling interests are more earthbound, there’s still plenty of content for you to check out on Arts & Culture, too. The company also has countless virtual tours of tourist attractions, national parks and museums around the world.

Take an amazing virtual tour aboard the ISS

Ever wanted a tour of the International Space Station in all its gravity-defying glory? Well now you can, courtesy of an explorable panorama from the European Space Agency .

The interactive tool offers a snapshot into how the ISS looked in June 2015, shortly after it was remodelled to free up a docking port, with the 10-tonne Leonardo storage module moved to the Tranquility node.

All the pictures were taken by ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti , who spent 199 days onboard the craft -- taking up to 15 photographs inside each module. You can roam through each part of the Space Station, moving through the hatches, and zoom in on various pieces of equipment, from the onboard exercise bike to the oven.

You can also click on the various "play" icons to watch Cristoforetti herself explain more about an item or give a demonstration, and you can read in-depth web articles too.

Currently, the Russian modules are off limits -- a complete tour of the ISS won't be available until later this year -- but in the meantime, it offers a fascinating glimpse into what everyday life is like on the craft.

Let this astronaut show you around the International Space Station

Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen made a ‘keepsake’ tour video before returning to Earth.

By Andrew Paul | Published Apr 12, 2024 1:00 PM EDT

Astronaut Andreas Mogensen aboard the ISS

Andreas Mogensen returned to Earth in mid-March after a six-and-a-half month stint aboard the International Space Station . To mark his tenure as part of NASA’s Crew-7 mission, the Danish European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut has shared his souvenir from undock day—a guided video tour of the ISS.

It’s been a month now since I left the International @Space_Station . One of the very last things that I did on undock day, was film a tour of the Space Station. It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you.… pic.twitter.com/oFR0VXR06A — Andreas Mogensen (@Astro_Andreas) April 12, 2024

“It’s been a month now since I left the [ISS],” Mogensen posted to X early Friday morning. “… It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you. Whenever I will miss my time onboard ISS, and especially my crewmates, I will have this video to look at.”

Mogensen began his show-and-tell in the space station’s front end, above which a docked SpaceX Dragon craft awaited to take him home on March 12. On his left is the roughly 114-by-22-foot Columbus module—a science laboratory provided by the ESA back in 2008. Across from the lab is the smaller Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), nicknamed Kibō, which arrived not long after Columbus.

Astronauts waving in ISS

From there, Mogensen provides a first-person look at various other ISS facilities, including workstations, storage units, bathrooms, gym equipment, multiple docking nodes, and even the station kitchen. Of course, given the delicate environment, that module looks more like another lab than an actual place to cook meals—presumably because, well, no one is actually cooking anything up there.

International Space Station orbiting above Earth

But the most stunning area in the entire ISS is undoubtedly the cupola, which provides a 360-degree panoramic view of Earth, as well as a decent look at the space station’s overall size.

[Related: What a total eclipse looks like from the ISS .]

Speaking of which, Mogenen’s video also does a great job showcasing just how comparatively small the ISS really is, even after over 25 years of module and equipment additions. At 356-feet-long, it’s just one yard shy of the length of a football field, but any given module or transit space is only a few feet wide. Factor in the copious amounts of cargo, equipment, supplies, experiment materials, as well as the over 8-miles of cabling that wire its electrical systems, and it makes for pretty tight living conditions. Near the end of Mogensen’s tour, it only takes him a little over a minute to glide through most of the entire station back to his original starting point.

View of Earth from ISS cupola

Of course, none of that undercuts one of humanity’s most monumental achievements in space exploration. Although the ISS is nearing the end of its tenure (it’s scheduled for decommission in 2031 ), Mogensen’s keepsake is a great document of what life is like aboard the habitat. But for those now looking for an even more detailed tour, there’s always NASA’s virtual walkthrough .

This International Space Station VR experience lets you explore the ISS… and it’s as amazing as it sounds

VR allows you to reach places and achieve things that most can only dream about, including floating around the International Space Station

This International Space Station VR experience lets you explore the ISS… and it’s as amazing as it sounds

Think about what VR actually is. In the literal sense VR, of course, stands for ‘virtual reality’. Let’s examine that phrase for a moment, shall we? Without getting too philosophical, we can all agree on what reality is. But, it’s worth remembering that ‘virtual’ has a double meaning. While it means existing digitally, not physically, it also means ‘almost.’ ‘Nearly.’ ‘ Very close. ’ We promise this is going somewhere, and you’ve actually landed on Space.com and not Dictionary.com.

The idea of doing in an alternate ‘almost’ reality what you cannot in the real world is very appealing. That’s why people seek out the best VR headsets , like the PlayStation VR or Oculus Quest 2 . We’re not talking about things like soaring through the sky as a bird or going on an adventure on an alien planet with futuristic weapons (although VR does allow you to do these things). Rather, we’re thinking about things that you theoretically could do in the real world, but for various reasons may never get the chance to. Mountain climbing, visiting a rainforest, racing at extreme speeds, going into space – things like that.

Virtual reality presents an opportunity to experience a wide range of otherwise unobtainable experiences quickly, easily, safely, and often for free. It’s not the real thing, of course, but it’s much closer than you could otherwise get.

Oculus Quest 2 VR headset

Space in VR

One thing that the vast majority of people will never get the chance to do, but that a significant percentage of those same people would love to do, is become an astronaut and visit space. Without the years of mental and physical training necessary (or just… being a billionaire ), the next best thing we have is virtual reality. For example, Mission: ISS offers a tantalizing taste of astronaut life, and it’s free. You can get it from the Oculus store for the Oculus Quest 2 system.

Made with help from NASA, Mission: ISS gives you a little corner of the International Space Station to explore. You’re able to navigate tight spaces in zero gravity, look outside to see the Earth hanging below, and gently bat floating items out of your way – the full astronaut experience!

Mission: ISS_Magnopus_InGame still_OCULUS VR, LLC.

There’s an educational component to the experience, most explicitly in terms of the optional pop-ups to be found. If something is highlighted in yellow when you point at it – a spacesuit, say, or a control console – you can hold the trigger to reveal text and a photo or sometimes a video. Here, a NASA astronaut will talk briefly about their experiences. It’s not all dry technical stuff, either. Have you ever wondered how an astronaut washes their hair in zero gravity? Well, if you haven’t before, you certainly are now. That’s one mystery that Mission: ISS can clear up for you.

Nonetheless, you’re free to completely ignore these if you wish, and concentrate on playing astronaut yourself. As we mentioned, this is a zero-gravity experience. You can use the left stick to push yourself forwards and backwards to make things a little easier, but you can (and will) also need to grab onto handholds to push and pull yourself along in every direction. It can take a little while to master moving around in this way. But then, of course it can, this isn’t something most people are accustomed to.

Mission: ISS - The missions

You can even go on a simulated spacewalk. Typing this, we can still remember gingerly using our propulsion unit in conjunction with the hand-led navigation we’d practiced using while inside. With the Earth looming large below us, we carefully made our way to the area we were asked to check and back, noticing a release of tension once we’d reached the airlock. It’s alarmingly easy to drift off course or to go too far, and the tether attached to an astronaut’s spacesuit isn’t indestructible…

There’s another, safer, but equally tricky mission. From the safety of the inside of the ISS, you’ll be able to operate the Canadarm 2 which is a giant robotic arm. It’s not nearly as simple as you might expect. Operating the arm involves using two sticks while observing it on two separate monitors. It’s slow, demanding, and really makes you feel like you’re doing proper astronaut work.

Simulating some of the work done on the ISS is very cool, but there’s a simple joy to be had just making your way around. The interior is packed full of detail. While it’s a shame that you can’t open up the labeled boxes of astronaut food, you’ll love taking in the fine detail added to screens, and rewarding yourself with a tricky zero-g journey through the entirety of the available area.

Mission: ISS_Magnopus_InGame still_OCULUS VR, LLC.

VR video experiences

There are plenty of other apps and games that emulate space travel or take place in space (like these best PSVR space games ), as well as a huge variety of other bucket list experiences. Many cost money, albeit not that much. However, if you’re on a tight budget now that you’ve got your VR headset, another option is VR video. Again, some of these need to be paid for, but there are a huge number of free ones on YouTube (such as this spacewalk , this skydive experience , or the David Blaine balloon stunt ) and within certain apps and VR storefronts.

When it comes to 360 degree VR videos, downloading is always the best option, as streaming them tends to provide a fairly low resolution. Thanks to free streaming VR videos we have (virtually) skydived, ridden a motorbike at terrifying speed, accompanied a solo explorer to the South Pole, flown above world-famous cities, traveled deep below the surface of the ocean, and much more – all this without ever having to leave your house (well, once you’ve learnt how to set up your room for VR ). While VR videos aren’t strictly speaking interactive, they do allow you to look all around you while enjoying the extra immersion that VR offers by default.

VR can’t give you the money, knowledge, physique, or equipment that you may be missing for your dream experience. However, it can instantly bypass all those requirements to bring you very, very close. Why wouldn’t you take advantage of that? Things will, after all, be virtually the same.

How to tour the International Space Station with Google Street View

virtual tour of the iss

By Chris Barraclough

20th July 2017

  • Broadband & TV

You can now take a virtual tour of the International Space Station (ISS) thanks to Google Street View. Here’s how to see inside the ISS using Street View on your phone, tablet or computer, plus some of the best sights once you’re on-board.

To celebrate the 48th anniversary of the first manned mission to the moon, Google is offering us all a full virtual tour of the International Space Station. All you need is a smartphone, tablet or computer connected to the internet and you can virtually explore all 15 modules of the ISS, right now.

Like its Google Arts & Culture tours, the ISS Street View tour offers full annotations of the most interesting bits as you float around. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the life of the astronauts on board, while also proving slightly claustrophobic.

This is the second new Street View tour offered up this week. On Monday we were treated to a virtual rummage around some of the coolest real-life shooting locations for Game of Thrones, to commemorate the launch of the seventh season .

How can I virtually tour the ISS with Google Street View?

To start the International Space Station tour, just head to the  Google Street View ISS page , hidden away in the planets section of Street View .

virtual tour of the iss

You’ll start off in the Cupola Observational Module, which is designed so astronauts can check out any exterior activities, including the approach of vehicles and any robot maintenance.

To look around, you can simply swipe your finger (if your device has a touchscreen) or click and drag your mouse. Each view affords you a full 360-degree look at your surroundings, which means a lot of tech and inexplicable stuff to admire.

You can click or tap to move around, while tapping the arrow on the left side of the screen opens up the information tab. This will tell you all about the area you’re currently exploring.

What are the highlights of the ISS Google Street View tour?

Google’s virtual tour of the International Space Station includes a lot of cool stuff to scrutinise, from all 15 modules as well as the two different docking vehicles. Here’s our pick of some of the best stuff you’ll see as you explore.

We’re enjoying having a shifty around the various areas, including the Muscle Atrophy Research Exercise System  which is used to study the effects of microgravity on human bodies. With some help from a basketball and fuzzy workout gear, apparently.

Also cool is the Russian service module, Zvezda , which includes all kinds of fascinating stuff. Enormous camera lenses sit side-by-side with fascinating computer tech and even clunky deskjet printers, all pinned to the walls.

Be sure to check out the Quest airlock too. In here you’ll see a couple of astronauts hanging out in their EMU suits (which stands for Extravehicular Mobility Unit).

The SpaceX Dragon Docking Vehicle is designed to transport astronauts as well as their cargo to destinations around the ISS. This includes sending supplies up to the station from Earth, before returning back to the planet. You can also explore the Orbital Cygnus Docking Vehicle , which again transports cargo to the ISS, before being loaded with trash and sent off to burn up in re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere. So much for a peaceful retirement.

We all want to see the International Space Station but only a few get to be there. Therefore to quench the thirst for curiosity a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut has provided a virtual tour of the International Space Station (ISS) to the public.

The ISS, the largest space station ever built in low Earth orbit, is managed collaboratively by five space agencies: NASA, JAXA, Roscosmos, CSA, and ESA, along with their contractors.

Andreas Mogensen returned to Earth from his six-and-a-half-month stay on the ISS in mid-March as part of NASA’s Crew-7 mission. During his time on the station, he recorded a video showcasing life aboard the ISS and shared it with his social media followers.

India’s Forex Reserves Hit New High, Rising For Seventh Consecutive Week

In a detailed post shared by Andreas Mogensen on X (formerly Twitter) on April 12, the ESA astronaut disclosed, “It’s been a month since I left the International Space Station. One of the very last things that I did on undock day, was film a tour of the Space Station. It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you. Whenever I will miss my time onboard ISS, and especially my crewmates, I will have this video to look at.”

It’s been a month now since I left the International @Space_Station . One of the very last things that I did on undock day, was film a tour of the Space Station. Andreas Mogensen gave an exclusive glimpse into the front section of the space station. Hovering above was the SpaceX Dragon craft, responsible for safely transporting him back to Earth on March 12.

The elegant 114-by-22-foot Columbus module, provided by ESA as a cutting-edge science lab in 2008, was prominently featured in the footage.

Observers could also discern the smaller Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), affectionately referred to as Kibo, situated near the lab. This module, built shortly after the establishment of Columbus, adds a touch of sophistication to the station’s overall design.

Andreas Mogensen provided a firsthand look at several amenities on the ISS, including workstations, storage units, restrooms, exercise equipment, docking nodes, and even the station kitchen.

However, the cupola steals the show with its breathtaking 360-degree view of Earth and a stunning perspective of the entire space station, making it the most awe-inspiring spot on the ISS.

Springfield Museums

ISS Interactive Virtual Tour

  • July 8, 2021
  • Uncategorized , Science

The Springfield Science Museum was recently granted the long-term loan of a large, touch-screen interactive, virtual tour of the International Space Station (ISS).  The loan was made by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under the auspices of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS, the manager of the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory).  The virtual tour is now on display in Astronomy Hall on the second floor of the Science Museum.

The exhibit provides a fun and interactive experience for our visitors.  It consists of a large touch-screen monitor on top of a rolling platform and features a high-resolution, photographic-quality, CGI model of the ISS.  The model can be turned and viewed from any direction with a swipe, and a tap on a highlighted module brings up photos along with other detailed information.  Background music and didactic graphic panels (not shown here) complete the presentation.  It’s a great way to introduce our audiences to the excitement and challenges of space exploration!

It’s also a natural complement to the immersive ISS exhibit that we are developing nearby on the same floor.  It will help promote the upcoming reopening of our recently-renovated planetarium, our plans for a digitally connected observatory, and an Earth-systems approach to an evolving Science Museum.  It supports our goal to increase awareness of the STEM disciplines in general, and when used in conjunction with our new Science Workshop classroom (also on the second floor) will help encourage STEM identity and STEM literacy among the young people who use our spaces.  Being mobile, it can at times be displayed in other places around campus; by making full use of the multi-disciplinary nature of our museum complex, the ISS virtual tour will help promote cross-fertilization between the arts and sciences and foster the development of a variety of STEAM activities and programming.

Virtual reality experience aboard the international space station returns to houston.

From being the first word spoken on the moon to the city’s current status as a spaceport , Houston residents have always had a fascination with traveling to space. While space travel remains out of reach for most, a virtual reality experience that's won awards for how closely it recreates the experience is returning to Houston.

"Space Explorers: The Infinite," the first multi-sensory, interactive virtual reality experience to transport visitors aboard the International Space Station, will be touching back down in Houston on Friday, May 3.

The out-of-this world experience (and an extension of the Emmy-winning immersive series "Space Explorers: The ISS Experience" ) will return to Silver Street Studios at Sawyer Yards (2000 Edwards Street, Gate A).

Having made its U.S. debut in Space City in December 2021 for a limited run, "The Infinite" provides visitors with the opportunity to explore a virtual life-size replica of the International Space Station (ISS), bringing audiences closer to the feeling of being in outer space than ever before.

The experience has garnered legions of fans during stops in Houston, along with Tacoma, Richmond, Vancouver, and Denver. It has also been recognized with awards and honors, including being selected as a finalist in the VR, AR & MR category at the 2022 South By Southwest Innovation Awards.

“As the birthplace of NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center and a city with the cosmos as an inherent part of its DNA, Houston was the obvious choice for the American premiere of this one-of-a-kind experience, making it the perfect location for a second visit," says Félix Lajeunesse, co-founder/chief creative officer of Felix & Paul Studios, in a release. " We are thrilled to offer repeat visitors, and those who missed it the first time, a chance to virtually explore the International Space Station and experience the daily lives of astronauts in outer space.”

The return engagement of "The Infinite" offers new content — including the addition of footage of the Artemis I launch. Visitors will use virtual reality headsets to explore a digital version of the ISS, where they will interact with video testimonials of the international astronaut crew. Throughout the 60-minute journey, visitors’ senses are enriched through the interactivity between virtual reality, multimedia art, soundscapes, and light design.

“During its maiden U.S. launch, Space Explorers: The Infinite received enthusiastic reviews from Houston visitors who appreciated not only the technical innovations but also the uniqueness of the experience,” says Éric Albert, CO-CEO of Infinity Experiences Inc, in the release. “For those who joined us previously and loved the journey, we invite you back to rediscover the wonders of space exploration. And to those who missed it, this is your chance to experience what everyone has been talking about. We are excited to call Space City home once again.”

Tickets run from $24.50 for children ages 8-12 to $35 for adults, with special discounts available. For tickets and more information, visit the website .

"The Infinite" landed in Houston for the first U.S. show in December 2021.

“Every time I help with visualizing [ocean] simulation data, I learn about an entirely new area of ocean or climate research, and I’m reminded of how vast and rich this area of research is. And…the real magic happens at the intersection and interaction of simulated and observed data.

It is a great honor – and a thrill – to collaborate with devoted, world-class scientists doing such important, cutting-edge research and sometimes to even help them learn something new about their science.”
