The Pioneer Heritage Tour

Hear what others are saying.

Thanks for putting together the vacation of a lifetime. It’s amazing how complete strangers come together so well with one known commonality…the gospel.

It’s AWESOME!!! I would definitely recommend it and I hope my younger siblings go! I could feel the spirit of God like a fire burning inside me and it changed my life for the better.

It was a life-changing experience for me, and I would recommend anyone and everyone to do it! It not only solidified my testimony of the Book of Mormon, but it made those stories I’ve heard my whole life really come alive to me!

Tour Reviews

This trip will always be on the "top ten" list of favorites from my life's experiences. I learned so much and grew to understand and love the Prophet Joseph Smith and the pioneers more than I did previously. I highly recommend this trip!

Joni Flandro

My three children went on the tour for their senior trips the summer before graduation. They loved the trip and came home with a much strengthened testimony. They felt independent with a group of teenagers and I had the reassurance of great chaperones who kept them safe.

Egbert Amanda

Life changing! Testimony Building! You couldn't ask for better tour guides or experience! Every detail attended too! Everyone feels like they are loved and are known. Some who experience feeling loved for the 1st time! Thanks for the tour!

General Information

Tour of the painted churches.

1.  General Information:  Guided tours of the Schulenburg area are offered year-round, Monday through Saturday, except for certain holidays and Catholic holy days.  The Painted Churches on the tour are active churches, therefore, tours are not available on Sundays. The tour typically covers 4 churches in the area surrounding Schulenburg, however, by special request we can add another church to the tour.

There is no minimum or maximum number of visitors per tour. The Chamber strives to accommodate groups of all sizes, whether 1 or 100.  For all tours, but especially larger groups, we do ask that you call the Chamber, (979) 743-4514, to book your tour.

2.  Reservation/Tour Fees: Select your desired date well in advance and call us to book a tour. A deposit of $50.00 at the time of the booking will reserve your date and guide. This deposit will then be applied to the Guide’s Fee unless otherwise requested.

For Up to 19 people, the Tour Fee will be:

$18.00 per person for 4 Churches ($50.00 Guide Fee)

$20.00 per person for 5 churches ($60 Guide Fee).

For groups of 20 or more, the Tour Fee will be:

$17.00 per person for 4 Churches ($60 Guide Fee)

$19.00 per person for 5 Churches ($70.00 Guide Fee).

A portion of the Tour Fees are given to the churches for their upkeep.

If your tour is customized, such as a Photography Tour, the Guide Fee may be more due to the time involved.

3.  Tour Guides: A local tour guide will be assigned to your group and will meet you at the Chamber of Commerce office, 618 N. Main St., Schulenburg, TX 78956, at your scheduled time. He or she will have the option to accompany you in your vehicle or, take their own vehicle. As with any member of the Service industry, a Gratuity above their normal fee is appreciated.

4.  Tour Times: Tours are scheduled according to the beginning time that works best for your group; however, we recommend for the 4-church tour starting between 9:15 am and 11:00 am; and for the 5 church tour, no later than 10:30 am. These times will ensure that you have plenty of time to enjoy the churches before they close for the day.

5.  Lunch: Tours generally make a stop for lunch. The Chamber staff can assist you with selecting a restaurant and with making reservations. A list of local restaurants is available on the Chamber website under “Dining.”

6.  Cancellations: If you need to cancel, you are permitted to reschedule and transfer your deposit to another day (up to one year from the original scheduled date).   The cancellation must be made within 24 hours of your scheduled time and day or the deposit will be forfeited. Deposits can also be refunded at your request when cancelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I arrange a tour of the Painted Churches?

When you have a date in mind for a tour, call the Chamber office at least 2 weeks in advance to see if the date is available. The staff will help you with all the details. Please do not send a reservation form and deposit without talking with the Chamber staff first.

2. Why do I have to pay a $50.00 deposit?

The deposit guarantees your reservation with the Chamber and it assures that you will show up for your tour. A guide is not assigned to your group until the deposit is paid. The deposit will become the guides fee when you arrive. If for some reason you do not show up for your tour and do not call to cancel it at least the day before, the deposit will be forfeited.

3. Should I give the guide a gratuity at the end of the tour?

The guides are doing a service much like anyone in the service industry.  If you feel that they have exceeded your expectations, a gratuity would be much appreciated.  The amount is up to each individual.

4. Is there a bus that we all ride on or do I have to drive my own car?

Transportation is provided by our visitors, and the tour guide will ride in your vehicle with you if there is room. The guide can drive their vehicle, if needed, but cannot transport tour members.

5. Is there a minimum number of people for a guided tour?

The Chamber is happy to accommodate groups of any size, whether it is 1 or 100.

6. If I just have a few people, can you combine my group with another one?

The Chamber strives to accommodate as many groups as possible, but we don’t always have enough docents available on a given day. We also try to limit the guided tours to no more than six per day. We will only combine two groups when it is an emergency. We want each group to feel that it is their special event, not something they have to share with strangers. If we can’t provide a guided tour for you on the date you request, please consider another date or take the self-guided tour.

7. May I visit the churches on my own without a guide?

If you have a small group of no more than 6 people, you may visit the churches on your own. The churches are normally available from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, Mondays thru Saturdays, with some exceptions.  Occasionally, there are weddings, funerals, or special Masses at some of the churches, therefore, it’s a good idea to call the Chamber ahead of your visit to be sure the churches are available. When touring on your own, you can

visit 3 of the 5 churches in this area.

9.Do the churches get any of the money that the Chamber makes from tours?

The Chamber gives a portion of the money from the tours to the churches.

10.  Are there any special rules we need to follow while visiting the churches?

There are several rules of church etiquette that must be followed:

Please remember to close all doors behind you; you are welcome inside but we prefer the birds and wildlife stay outdoors.

No food, drinks, chewing gum, tobacco, or pets are allowed.

You may sit down in the pews, but please do not go into the choir loft or in the altar area.

You may not touch the statues, sculptures, or paintings.

Please do not take the prayer books as these are used at each Mass by the congregations.

These churches are still active today and do have services, prayer times, weddings, and funerals.  Please respect the congregations by remaining outside if an event is in progress, and be mindful of those who may be coming in to worship.

The Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce is not responsible for accidents or injuries.  Be especially mindful of the pews in the church at Dubina because of slight protrusions at the bottom of each pew.

All churches are handicap accessible.

12 Amazing Virtual Tours of the World's Most Spectacular Churches

The Editors

Christians have been making pilgrimages to holy sites and churches around the world for centuries. Can’t make a pilgrimage? Here’s the next best thing!

Some tours are embedded on this page, while others can be found with the link provided.

1) Sistine Chapel – Vatican City

 Maus-Trauden / Wikipedia

Built in the 15th century and painted in the 16th century, the Sistine Chapel is one of the great artistic masterpieces in the world. Michelangelo painted the ceiling and the Last Judgement fresco, while the frescoes on the other walls were painted by a number of other artists. Among other things, the Sistine Chapel serves as the location for conclaves of Cardinals that elect new popes.

This one can only be viewed on the Vatican website, so click on the picture or on the link to check it out.

2) Church of the Holy Sepulchre – Jerusalem

Jorge Láscar / Flickr

Located in Old Jerusalem, the Church of Holy Sepulchre is venerated by Christians for containing within its space what is believed to be the places of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection – which makes it pretty important! The original church was built in the 4th century under Constantine but has endured several rounds of extensive damage and restoration since.

3) St. Basil’s Cathedral – Moscow, Russia

michael clarke stuff / Wikimedia Commons

Not to be confused with the Kremlin (which is nearby), St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century on orders from Ivan the Terrible  and served as a Russian Orthodox cathedral for centuries until it was confiscated and forcibly secularized in the late 1920s by the Soviet Union. It remains property of the Russian government today and is used as a museum.

4) Basilica of St. Peter – Vatican City

Public Domain / Wikipedia

This great wonder of the world was built in the 16th century in the midst of the Protestant reformation, replacing the aging church that had stood on that site since the 4th century . The largest church in the world, it is built on top of what is believed to be the grave of St. Peter, the first pope.

5) Church of the Nativity – Bethlehem, West Bank

young shanahan / Flickr

Church of the Nativity is located on the place that Christians have traditionally believed that Jesus was born. The first church was built in the 4th century under Constantine but was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt in the 6th century. Since then it has gone through numerous restorations, additions, etc. Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic representatives run and maintain the current church.

6) Cathedral of St. Paul, National Shrine of the Apostle Paul – St. Paul, MN

Jeremy Noble / Wikimedia Commons

Atop the highest hill in the Twin Cities (with the Minnesota state capital just a bit lower down the street!), the St. Paul Cathedral is everything you’d expect of a beautiful European cathedral – except that it’s in the U.S.! It’s the third largest completed church in the U.S., and the fourth tallest. Built in the early 20th century, it is a co-cathedral with the Basilica of St. Mary (see #6) for the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis.

7) basilica of st. mary – minneapolis, mn.

Beatrice Murch / Wikimedia Commons

Built in the early 20th century, the Basilica of St. Mary was the first church designated a basilica in the U.S., and serves as a co-cathedral with the Cathedral of St. Paul for the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis.

8) Canterbury Cathedral – Canterbury, England

Hans Musil, Wikipedia

When was Canterbury Cathedral built? That’s a hard question to answer, since different parts of the current structure were built, torn down, rebuilt, added on, etc over nine centuries , from the 10th to the 19th, with the site having been used as a cathedral since the 6th century. During the Protestant reformation in the 16th century, the Church of England took control of the church from the Roman Catholic Church.

9) Exeter Cathedral – Exeter, England

WyrdLight.com / Antony McCallum / Wikipedia

Built from the 12th century to the 15th century, Exeter Cathedral serves as the seat of the Anglican bishop of Exeter. Among its large collection of relics, the church has what is supposedly the Burning Bush , as well as part of a candle used by an angel in Christ’s tomb. Like the Canterbury Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral was originally a Roman Catholic cathedral, but was acquired by the Church of England in the 16th century.

10) St. Patrick’s Cathedral – New York City, NY

Mr. Kjetil Ree / Wikimedia Commons

Directly across the street from Rockefeller Center in the middle of New York City, St. Patrick’s Cathedral was built in the 19th century when midtown wasn’t as populated, and its large size dominated the area. Construction began in 1858, paused during the Civil War, and was finished in 1878. Further work was done in the early 20th century, and it was named a National Historic Site in 1976. It is currently used as the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of New York.

11) Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Chartres – Chartres, France

Olvr / Wikipedia

Built mostly in the 13th century, Chartres Cathedral is the latest of at least five churches that have stood in its location. Amazingly, most of the stained glass in the church is original. Among its many boasts, the church claims to have the Sancta Camisa , the tunic worn by the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus. It is still the seat of the Catholic bishop of Chartres.

12) Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception – Washington D.C.

AgnosticPreachersKid / Wikipedia

Located on the campus of Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception  “is the largest Catholic church in the United States, the largest church of any kind in the western hemisphere, the eighth largest church building in the world, and the tallest habitable building in Washington, D.C.” Construction began in 1920, but wasn’t completed until 1961 due to the Great Depression and WWII. Even so, significant additions have been made as recently as 2012. In addition to a beautiful array of images of the Blessed Virgin Mary from different cultures, the basilica houses the papal tiara of Pope Paul VI.

Questions to consider when selecting your Tour Company

research is key to selecting the right company, please read this carefully before you sign up with any tour company.

What is the Tour Company’s main focus?

Several vacation tour companies have attempted to make inroads into the Christian

Pilgrimage market. Friendship Tours only specializes in Christian pilgrimages. We do not sell vacation packages to other countries. Christian Pilgrimages is all we do and we do it well!

What knowledge does the company have about their guides?

The owners of Friendship Tours personally screen and select all of our guides.  We choose guides who are flexible and responsive to the needs of our group leaders.  Our guides are well informed with a broad base of knowledge in both the Old and New Testament. Our guides make us successful and this is why our group leaders re-book year after year with us.

How long has the company been around?

After 9/11 several companies avoided refunding churches the tour payments and closed shop only to re-open under a different name. Friendship Tours has been in business since 1982 and has refunded all travelers their money.  Every client was cared for after 9/11. This level of service and trust is important in the ever-changing world we live in.

Are the company owners Christian?

Friendship Tours is a Christian Company.  We consider our work to be the work of God on behalf of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We understand Christian Pilgrimage and we make every effort to help you in planning a meaningful, memorable and faithful experience.

What financial protection does the company offer?

Friendship Tours carries high limits of liability insurance that protects the churches that work with us. We adhere to all US government over sight with regard to Financial regulations. We have strict company policies prohibiting the commingling of client deposits. This is a critical component of our integrity. During difficult times some companies will use customer deposits to survive and run out of funds to service their group commitments.  Friendship Tours is a member of the Better Business Bureau with an “A” rating. Friendship Tours has the best buying power due to our long-standing professional relations with all international airlines offering us the lowest airfares with the best connections. Our buying power for ground services is reflected in the prices we are able to offer. Very few

Companies are able to do what we do. How do we do it? Very simple. As a wholesale Tour Operator, we work on large volume of passengers and pass the savings on to our clients.  This is our mission.  This is a ministry entrusted to us by God.  At every turn we will seek to be faithful to you and our mission.  Our

Tagline says it all. “We build lasting relations. One client at a time.”

Local election results: Labour admits Gaza a factor in some council election losses - as senior Tory says London mayor result 'might be tight'

The Tories suffer some historic losses in Thursday's local elections, while Labour admit the party's stance on Gaza was "obviously" a factor in its failure to record more wins. Meanwhile, a Conservative minister says he has heard suggestions the London mayoral race "might be tight".

  • Live reporting by Katie Williams , Emily Mee , and (earlier) Andy Hayes and  Ben Bloch

People in Grimsby - one of Sky News's general election Target Towns - have been offering their views on the current state of politics in the country.

Bex Wright, who owns a barbershop in the town, tells our news correspondent Tom Parmenter that people don't "have trust in the government", while customer Matt Tucker says voters are "fed up" after being promised big changes in 2019.

You can watch the full clip below, and read all of our Target Towns coverage here .

As reported here today, rumours have swirled since polls closed last night that Sadiq Khan may have suffered a shock defeat to Tory candidate Susan Hall.

However, Sky News correspondents understand that key figures in both parties now believe the Labour incumbent has secured a relatively narrow victory.

Deputy political editor Sam Coates   said Labour MPs were more confident this evening that Sadiq Khan has "squeaked" the election.

Figures close to Ms Hall earlier said she was in with a chance of being named winner when results are announced tomorrow, with the suggestion "rattling around" all day.

But, Sam says, there has been a "shift" in the wake of the turnout results being published (more on that in our 20.13 post).

"Both Labour and key Conservative MPs now do think Sadiq Khan will have squeaked it tomorrow," he says.

"There are a lot fewer jitters than there were a few hours ago."

Indeed, Labour sources are also suggesting to Sky News political correspondent Rob Powell that rumours of Sadiq Khan's potential defeat may be exaggerated.

One said the "the fundamentals are good" while acknowledging "no one can possibly know the outcome of the vote at this stage - the count is tomorrow".

Another insider said: "It will be tight, but I think some rumours are a little wild."

A Labour MP has said there is "no doubt at all" the party's stance on Gaza has made some voters switch away.

Clive Betts said people in his constituency had told him "very clearly" this was the case.

In one of the wards in his Sheffield South East constituency, which is usually one of Labour's safest, an independent councillor was elected "solely on the issue of Gaza", he says.

"People voted on the basis they were not happy with Labour, not happy with its position on Gaza," he says.

"A lot of that was mistaken that we haven't changed our position on Gaza, but once people take a view that we've got it wrong, it's very difficult to change their minds."

He says Labour must "make it clear what Israel is doing in Gaza now is unacceptable" and if in government it should take sanctions against Israel if necessary and recognise a Palestinian state.

While it hasn't enjoyed any thumping victories, Reform UK has proved "one of the most consequential" aspects of the election results for the Conservatives, says our deputy political editor Sam Coates .

The party has turned from a "polling phenomena into something that clearly takes votes from the Tories", he says.

Sam says the vote in the Blackpool by-election, where the Reform candidate came just 117 votes behind the second-place Tory candidate, indicates Reform will "eat into seats" in the next general election.

He points to 2019, when Boris Johnson won a huge majority after persuading the Brexit Party - the forerunner to Reform UK - to stand aside in key seats. The Tories will likely put "enormous pressure" on Reform UK to do the same thing, Sam notes.

But as it stands, Richard Tice's party is planning to stand in nearly every single seat in Great Britain this year, he says.

"That's why Reform is a really big issue."

Now Sophy Ridge wants to know whether Reform UK's "missing ingredient" is Nigel Farage, and asks if he is expected to return to frontline politics.

Richard Tice says they are "very good friends" and that Mr Farage "has got a big decision to make".

He says the "more help Nigel can give, the better" and there is "no 'I' in 'team'".

Mr Tice says Mr Farage is "the most famous politician in the country".

Asked whether the former UKIP leader would want to come back, Mr Tice says: "Let's wait and see."

Reform UK leader Richard Tice is next up on the programme, and says he is "delighted" by his party's election results.

He says his party had its "strongest by-election result by some margin" and is starting to win council seats.

But Sophy Ridge points out that UKIP had outpolled Reform UK at local elections, and yet still wasn't able to win a seat in Westminster.

She argues Reform UK will not get the cut-through when it comes to the general election.

Mr Tice says this is "completely wrong" and the Tories are "facing annihilation".

"We have two forms of socialism in the two main parties - there's no difference between the two of them," he says.

Sophy asks whether he believes Rishi Sunak is a socialist, and he says it is "literally the definition" of socialism to raise taxes and spending.

Reform UK has picked up two seats in Havant, but has not won any councils.

In the Blackpool South by-election, the party came close to the Conservatives - taking 16.8% of the vote and coming just 117 votes behind the second-placed Tory candidate.

Voter turnout figures for the London mayoral election - one of the most closely watched - have landed this evening.

Some 40.5% of the capital's electorate headed to polling stations to cast their vote, according to data from London Elects.

The figure is down 1.5% on the 2021 turnout.

The election result will be announced on Saturday once votes have been counted in 14 constituencies.

The lower turnout has sent rumours swirling that the election could be tighter than it was thought, with opinion polls having indicated Sadiq Khan would secure re-election relatively comfortably.

Sophy Ridge wants to get the opinion of our Politics Hub panel, and former government special adviser James Starkie says he believes this vote will be a game-changer in a sense.

"For the last four or five years, London has been considered a Labour city and impossible [for the Conservatives to win]," he says.

"My prediction would be, whatever the result, when we come out of it that will no longer be the case and it will be seen as at least winnable."

Former Labour minister Caroline Flint says Mr Khan may have been impacted by the switch to first past the post.

"In the past, the Labour candidate would have benefited from Greens, Liberals and others to the left voting their second preference for Labour," she says.

This might be a terrible set of results for the Conservatives, but it's not an unequivocally good night for Labour either, our elections analyst Professor Michael Thrasher says.

Labour has lost some seats to independents, and the drop for the Conservatives is not fully reflected in Labour's rise, he says.

Thrasher says local voters are becoming more "willing to engage with smaller parties" as well as with independents.

He also points out the "enormity of the task facing Labour".

"Starmer and his party require a swing larger than any seen in any post-war election just to win a majority of two seats," he says.

Even Tony Blair did not achieve a swing of 12.7%, he says.

"Labour still has not crossed the line, even on these results," he adds.

It's more bad news for the Conservative Party as it loses control of two more councils.

Havant is now under no overall control after the Tories lost 17 seats there.

Labour gained seven seats and the Lib Dems gained five. It also marked the first seat gains of the local elections for Reform UK, which secured two.

The Conservatives have also lost Dudley to no overall control after a loss of 11 seats.

Seven more seats went to Labour, three to the Lib Dems and one to an independent candidate.

Yvette Cooper says Labour's stance on Gaza has "obviously been a factor" which has seen the party's vote share fall in some areas.

The shadow home secretary tells the Politics Hub that many people "rightly" feel strongly about the issue as "tens of thousands of people have been killed, including the majority of them women and children".

Questioned on whether Labour feels it is on the right course or will change its stance, Ms Cooper says: "We have to recognise the strength of feeling on this issue and I think we always take the view in the Labour Party that we need to earn every vote and therefore we have to always listen and reflect. When we lose votes in any area, we always have to listen."

The crisis in Gaza is an issue that spans beyond party political debates, she says.

Labour previously faced heavy criticism over its repeated refusal to call for an immediate ceasefire.

Keir Starmer triggered anger among many people within his own party after comments he made about Israel during an LBC interview in October.

In the widely shared clip, the Labour leader was asked what a "proportionate" response would look like, to which Sir Keir replied that responsibility "lies with Hamas" and that Israel "has the right to defend herself".

Presenter Nick Ferrari interjected: "A siege is appropriate? Cutting off power, cutting off water?"

The Labour leader replied: "I think that Israel does have that right. It is an ongoing situation."

He added: "Obviously everything should be done within international law, but I don't want to step away from the core principles that Israel has a right to defend herself and Hamas bears responsibility for the terrorist acts."
