Nobody likes uncomfortable shoes. We’ve all experienced them — stiff dress shoes we pull out of the closet once or twice a year to attend a wedding, or when the big company boss is in town, then we come home with sore feet and blisters on our heels. The wrong pair of shoes can wreak havoc not only on your feet, but on your posture, throwing your back out of whack and causing soreness up and down your body.  Luckily, buying a stylish pair of dress shoes does not mean you need to compromise on comfort.

We tested 23 pairs of shoes to find the most comfortable men’s dress shoes on the market. We analyzed out-the-box comfort; comfort after two hours of wear; comfort after a full day’s wear; and overall comfort, fit, quality and value. Ultimately, our top pick went to the Cole Haan Original Grand Wingtip Derby, a fantastically comfortable shoe that looks smart, as well.

Best Overall

Cole haan original grand wingtip derby.

  • Comfort 4.6 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

It looks like a derby, but wears like a sneaker.

The sneaker sole may read a little casual for some workplaces.

Cole Haan has been synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, and excellent shoemaking for nearly 100 years. These Cole Haan classics are a best seller for a reason: they have a buttery smooth, yet supportive fit right out of the box, and are equally as pleasant for short strolls as they are for long walks.

Our reviewer appreciated the quality of the leather uppers and herringbone stitching, and admired the comfortable but supportive fit. The only area where this shoe lost a fraction of a point was for the comfort rating — because the rubber sneaker sole has a slight degree of support instead of just pure marshmallowy bounce back. But a little bit of support goes a long way and still secured the top spot for this pair of shoes. Our reviewer was able to wear them all day long and feel their back was supported, too. A removable cushioned insole adds even more comfort.

They’re also, simply put, a beautiful pair of shoes. The brogue detailing lends a heritage feel, and the grooved rubber sole offers a distinctively modern approach to a classic silhouette.

Thursday Boot Co. Cavalier Chelsea Boot

Thursday Boot Co

  • Comfort 5 /5

It has a versatile silhouette for formal and casual occasions alike.

A cork midsole means it takes a bit of time to break these shoes in.

These shoes are stylish without being stuffy. The Cavalier has a classic Chelsea boot silhouette from Thursday Boot Co., with sleek lines, balanced proportions, and an elasticized heel band so they slip on and off with ease. They’re crafted with a cork midsole that forms to your foot over time, and the soft, hand-finished leather upper will burnish and mold to your foot shape as well. They’re comfortable out of the box, but will grow even more comfortable after a few weeks of wear.

Our tester loved the comfort of the elastic side bands, noting that his large feet are typically tricky to squeeze into a Chelsea boot. That wasn’t the case here but he still suggested ordering a half-size up from what you typically wear. Conveniently, these shoes offer a wide range of sizes, running from 6 to 16.

Best Splurge

Magnanni corey oxford shoe.

  • Comfort 4 /5

This is a quintessential, classic men’s shoe, executed to perfection.

The price is a bit steep.

Is there any men’s shoe more classic or versatile than an Oxford? This luxe pair from Magnanni is just about as good as heritage shoemaking gets, too. Made in Spain, hand-painted for a burnished finish, and crafted with a historic “Bologna construction” technique, this is a very light and flexible shoe.

This pair is extremely comfortable — not quite as plush as a loafer or sneaker, but fantastic nonetheless for the style. These shoes are expensive-looking and refined, so while the price might be higher than some Oxfords, you can rest assured it’s money well spent. The brand also offers complimentary shipping and returns, so it’s a low-risk purchase if they don’t end up being the perfect pair for you.

Best Loafers

Magnanni ramiro ii penny loafer.

We love the expensive-looking, hand-painted finish.

These shoes are on the expensive side.

Comfort is of the utmost importance when it comes to men's loafers , which are often worn without socks. This pair from Magnanni scored highly when it came to out-of-the-box comfort. They’re crafted from high-quality calfskin leather and handmade in Spain, resulting in a luxe, buttery-soft feel. We love that the Ramiro II is a classic, versatile penny loafer with a modern shape. Rubber soles provide an additional level of cushion, flexibility, and comfort, and are constructed in such a way that pebbles and rocks don’t easily get stuck.

This pair got high marks for the softness and comfort of the leather uppers, and we noted there was no break-in needed. After going through a full day of events, our feet still felt great. For a penny loafer that has a broken-in feel from day one, this is a solid option.

Most Comfortable

Mephisto edlef slip on.

We appreciate the rubber outsole with a shock-absorbent heel.

They have a very casual, relaxed look that may not work well for the office.

If ever there was a shoe designed for comfort, it would be the Edlef from Mephisto. The brand, founded in Sarrebourg, France in 1965 – and still headquartered there – has made its mission to produce comfortable, elegant shoes for men.

Straight out of the box, they have that soft, supple, worn-these-forever feeling. Our reviewer gave especially high marks for the quality of the leather, and noted that the toe area is not restrictive, making this a great option for guys who want a little more space in the front of the shoe. When worn with socks, we didn’t feel any hot spots or blisters forming, and felt more than comfortable spending hours on our feet wearing them. It’s worth noting that customers often hail Mephisto for producing particularly well-crafted shoes, often lasting for years and years.

Best Plain Toe

Ecco city tray plain toe derby.

  • Quality 4 /5

It’s a highly functional, wear-anywhere shoe.

The heel might feel a little formal for some men.

A plain-toe derby is one of the most versatile shoes a man can buy. Dress it up, dress it down, wear it to work, wear it to a wedding — this shoe can go everywhere. We especially loved that this City Tray derby is built with Fluidform Direct Comfort Technology , a type of comfortable-yet-supportive sole that’s lightweight and plush while still feeling anatomically supportive. It has the look of a dress shoe but the feel of something much more easygoing.

While we didn’t find this shoe exactly form-fitting out of the box, it didn’t feel overly stiff. There were no hot spots or blisters after several hours of wear, but we did feel that these are more geared toward an occasional special event, noting that guys who wear dress shoes every day might gravitate toward something a little more casual like a penny loafer. But all in all, these are a solid and reliable option in a highly flexible style.

Best Fit Out of the Box

Ace marks cap toe griffin oxford.

These shoes offer a perfect fit right away, with no need to spend weeks breaking them in.

They're a little pricey.

Have the Cinderella moment you deserve with the Griffin Oxford from Ace Marks. We noticed that while the leather seemed a little stiff at first, it felt perfectly broken in after just a few hours of wear. These shoes have a fit and feel that quickly become like something you’ve worn for years.

These stunning Italian dress shoes are handmade from 100 percent premium calfskin leather, with a classic cap toe that makes them appropriate for any office setting – yet casual enough for everyday wear. And while some shoppers might balk at the high price tag, the Ace Marks’ direct-to-consumer model cuts out the middleman, so these shoes have the quality and comfort of a much more expensive pair. In short: they deliver excellent quality and comfort for the price.

Best Casual

Dr. scholl's sync oxford.

  • Quality 3 /5

These shoes are so smooth they almost feel as comfortable as your favorite sneakers or slippers.

Their appearance is a bit casual when compared to the other shoes on our list.

The name “Dr. Scholl’s” is synonymous with foot comfort. While this pair isn’t made from leather, it certainly has the look and feel of it. These shoes are very supportive and we didn't have any issues with them being too tight or causing blisters, even after wearing them for a whole day. The soles are breathable and mold to your feet for the perfect fit.

Considering the more casual look of these shoes as well, travelers could easily pack them to be worn for daytime sightseeing or heading out for an evening dinner. Plus, these shoes are completely machine washable, so you can keep them looking clean and new with little fuss.

Best Oxfords

Stacy adams dickinson cap-toe oxford.

They're incredibly stylish and supportive.

You may experience a bit of chafing on the heel and less breathability than with the other shoes on our list.

Stacy Adams has been producing comfortable men’s dress shoes for over 100 years, and this Cap Toe Oxford is a perfect summation of the brand: timeless, stylish, and above all, comfortable. We noticed they were comfortable right out of the box — not too stiff, and very flexible once we put them on. The sole is more plush than other dress shoes and could easily be worn all day long or out to an event.

We felt these shoes were most comfortable with thicker socks that protected the heels from chafing, but after breaking them in we had no issues. Made from fine leather and carefully hand burnished, these are a high-end statement shoe at a surprisingly affordable price.

Most Versatile

Amberjack the original.

They feel sturdy and supportive.

The suede may stain if they get wet.

If you're a regular at the office or on the wedding scene, these stylish suede shoes are the perfect addition to your footwear collection. Not only are they comfortable, but they only have a short break-in period, so you can feel your best right out of the box. They also feature adjustable lace-ups so you can wear either thick or thin socks, depending on your preference.

With 11 colors to choose from and either a suede or leather exterior, you can find the style that perfectly fits your needs. After regularly wearing for three months, we did note that moisture from rain and snow left marks on the outside of the suede.

Best Formal

Ace marks chelsea boot.

  • Durability 5 /5

The high-quality leather elevates any look.

The sizes run large, so be sure to carefully read all of their measurements.

These handcrafted Italian leather boots are perfect for formal events throughout every season. The high ankle provides comfortable support and warmth for colder months, but are easily concealed for a sophisticated loafer look in the warmer months. While these certainly aren't an everyday shoe, we love how the hand dyed and burnished leather instantly adds to any outfit, making the wearer feel their best. They may be on the pricier end, but the boots also come with their own durable shoe horn and cloth storage bag to make sure the materials don't deteriorate over time, ensuring you will look your best for all formal occasions for years to come.

Best Budget

Clarks tilden cap oxford shoe.

This is a great shoe at a great price.

You’ll likely need to order a half-size up.

This pair of dress shoes is an absolute steal. The Tilden Cap Oxford from Clarks delivers everything you want from a dress shoe — great color, quality stitching, a sturdy yet comfortable sole — and they're extremely soft right out of the box. These are a great choice for city commuters and anyone getting dressed for a formal event.

Our reviewer especially loved their versatility, pairing these shoes with a variety of dress pants for the office as well as his favorite chinos and blue jeans for off-duty use. Regular sizes may fit a bit snug, so it might be best to order half a size up. Overall, however, this is a great shoe offered at fantastic value for the price.

The Details : 8 to 13 | Leather

The T+L team tested nearly two dozen pairs of men’s dress shoes, wearing them at least three times, and testing for out-of-the-box wear, two-hour wear, and all-day wear. We took note of attributes like whether the shoes were rigid or soft out of the box, if they rubbed or chafed anywhere, and whether the fit was true to size. We judged shoes on breathability, and whether our testers found them comfortable enough for all-day wear. We wore them around the house, in cars, on city streets, to work meetings, and weddings to see how they would perform.

In the end, shoes were ranked using a points system based on comfort, fit, quality, and value. Extra points were assigned for additional features such as waterproofing, memory foaming, arch supports, and overall design. In the end, the highest-ranking pairs were selected for this roundup.

Other Men’s Shoes We Liked

Two other pairs of comfortable men’s shoes we tested didn’t quite make our list, but had noteworthy features that are still worth mentioning.

Clarks Atticus LT Lace Shoe: These shoes are light with a comfortable and supportive sole. However, at first wear, we found them to be a little stiff. The inside of the shoe needed about 12 hours of wear before they were broken in enough to be considered comfortable.

Travel + Leisure / David Engler

Allen Edmonds McAllister Wingtip : This is a traditional wingtip shoe handcrafted from high-quality and durable leather. They're comfortable enough for all-day wear, but do have a firmer sole and a high price point that may not be suitable for all shoppers.

Tips for Buying Men’s Dress Shoes

Prioritize comfort and support.

Nothing will ruin a wedding or a day at the office faster than a pair of shoes that don’t fit properly or aren’t comfortable. There are so many options out there these days that you don’t need to compromise when it comes to blending comfort and style. Look for dress shoes that offer plenty of arch-support, a roomy toe box, and soles with plenty of traction to help you stay on your feet all day without causing foot, ankle, or even lower back pain.

Consider your intended activities

Are you going to be dancing up a storm? Go for something with a softer sole. Will there be lots of pictures, or perhaps you want to impress the boss? Opt for something a little more conservative. There’s a shoe out there for every occasion. If you live in a place known for unpredictable weather or are planning a trip during the shoulder seasons, a versatile shoe can round out a transitional weather pack list nicely . When in doubt, ask a salesperson at your local retailer for their input.

They should be snug enough so your heel doesn’t come up when you walk in them, but they should also be roomy enough so your toes have space to wiggle freely. Anything that feels constricting is too small; anything that slides around is too large. Just keep in mind that certain materials such as leather will also stretch out just a little over time, so a snug (but not tight) fit at the beginning is ideal.

There’s no shortcut or magic potion for breaking in a pair of dress shoes. The best method is simply to wear them. If you want to make sure they’re broken in before an event like a formal wedding, we suggest wearing them around the house for a day or so until they start to feel more comfortable.

Make sure to let them completely air dry before returning them to your closet, especially if you’ve been wearing them for many hours or have been sweating in them.  For exterior scuffs on leather shoes, buff them out with a bit of leather polish and a soft, clean cloth. If there’s dirt in the sole, use a damp cloth, well wrung-out, to flick off any dirty bits before returning the shoes to your closet.

There's no perfect dress shoe for everyone, but overall, a shoe with a wide sole and good arch support should keep you comfortable even when standing all day. To enhance the comfort of even the nicest dress shoes, you can also add a cushiony insole for additional support.

The Packable Life

16 Tried-And-True Travel Shoes (for Walking All Day)

Three sets of men's travel shoes resting on the bumper of a van

Smart travelers know the value of great shoes. When you’re on your feet all day — whether it’s hiking a trail or walking neighborhoods in a new city — your footwear can make an enormous difference. That’s why I’m here to report on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for walking all day.

I’m a minimalist and typically only take one or two pairs of shoes on the road. My ideal travel shoes are stylish, lightweight, and comfortable all day long. In the summer, I look for more breathable and lightweight shoes, and in winter, I crave warmth and durability.

I’ve worked at REI and traveled extensively in Europe for business and personal endeavors, so I know a thing or two about footwear that’s built for walking all day. I’m happy to share my findings on such brands as Allbirds, Lems, Xero, SeaVees, and Blundstone, as these companies make some truly stellar kicks.

This list includes sneakers, loafers, slip-ons, athletic shoes, and a few sandals that I’ve evaluated for comfort, style, packability, and other key factors.

Travel is back in a big way, so let’s dive headfirst into my list of the best men’s and women’s travel shoes money can buy.

Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

  • Best All-Around: Allbirds Tree Runners

  • Hiking Sandals: Teva Universal
  • Considerations for Travel Shoes & Sandals
  • Final Thoughts: Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

Best All-Around Allbirds Tree Runners

Allbirds Tree Runners

I’m a huge fan of the Allbirds Tree Runners. They come in a wide variety of colors, and you’ll love their breathability and packability. You’ll have no problem squishing them down flat and tying them to the side of your backpack or even stuffing them into the water bottle pocket.

I criss-crossed Europe in my Allbirds and washed them several times. They held up great! The best thing about Allbirds is how lightweight they are. They’re perfect for walking all day, thanks to the stretchy material that molds to your feet.

If you’re looking for responsibly sourced and comfortable all-day shoes, I can highly recommend the Allbirds.

Best Slip-Ons SeaVees Huntington Middie

SeaVees Huntington Middie comfortable travel slip-ons

Want a slightly more stylish option than the Allbirds? The SeaVees Huntington Middie is my favorite slip-on shoe for travel. The high top and suede material make them easy to dress up or down.

SeaVees are perfect travel companions. I love the simple, minimalistic look they bring to any outfit, so they look great day and night.

Plus, they’re super comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Quite a few online reviewers say SeaVees aren’t just a travel shoe but also a go-to everyday casual shoe.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes Lems Primal Zen

Black and gray Lems brand barefoot men's shoe

I recommend the Lems Primal Zens for the zero-drop traveler because they’re lightweight, versatile, and minimalist, making them excellent travel shoes.

Travel is hard on the body, and some people prefer the benefits of a zero-drop shoe with the natural fit and feel that promotes healthy walking habits. In comparison, traditional shoes can produce an unnatural gait that increases the likelihood of injury.

These Lems can handle anything – from running, hiking, working out, and walking. Their versatility and durability make them perfect for a new adventure every day when traveling.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots Lems Boulder Vegan

Lems Boulder Vegan barefoot boots

Traveling in the fall or winter? I’d opt for Lems’ Boulder Vegan Boots. The neutral colors go with any outfit, and they pack down to a size of a puff jacket, making them an easy must-carry.

Lems is a vegan-friendly Colorado brand that strives to make responsibly produced and sustainable footwear. They use recycled products to create new materials and also partner with a non-profit.

The Lems cork footbed molds to your feet and has a wide toebox, so this zero-drop style is perfect for travelers who are on their feet all day. You have a choice of materials to help you find the one that best matches your travel needs.

All-Purpose Sneakers Reebok Classic

White Reebok Classic all-purpose sneakers

If you’re a fan of sneakers, the Reebok Classic offers excellent support and comes in an array of colors and styles.

The downside to these shoes is their limited packability and versatility. Compared to others on this list, the Reebok Classics don’t pack down as small and don’t dress up as easily for attending those special dinner events.

I love these Reeboks because they’re highly functional and will take you to your destination in comfy sneaker style.

Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons Xero Sunrise

Grey ultralight slip-ons for travel

The Xero Sunrise slip-ons are the lightest and most packable shoe on this list. Weighing in at a ridiculous 5.6 ounces each (men’s size medium), these were designed for those who want a comfortable shoe to slide into when it’s time to chill.

Though I don’t recommend climbing a mountain in these or donning them during a 30,000-step marathon around the city, I do think they’d work perfectly for a relaxing night on the town, strolling around a farmers market, or kicking your feet up by the pool.

From experience, I can tell you these are about as comfortable, cozy, and convenient as travel shoes come these days. For my more relaxed trips, they’ll make it into my travel bag every single time.

Trail Running Shoes Salomon Wander

Black Salomon Wander footwear for trail running and high-volume walking

The Salomon Wander is made for trail running but also works quite well as a travel shoe. They’re versatile for active travelers who like to walk, run, and hike all day, every day.

These shoes have ample cushion that makes long walks in the city easier on your knees, but they aren’t quite as stylish as some and don’t dress up as easily.

Salomon is a trusted and well-reviewed brand, and their Wander is a fine addition to their respected product line. If you spend all day on your feet, look no further.

Stylish Hiking Shoes Merrell Burnt Rock

Merrell Burnt Rock hiking shoes

I love the Merrell Burnt Rock because they’re so stylish. These are ideal for travelers who like to hit the trail occasionally but also know they’ll spend most of their time in the city.

The Burnt Rock comes in various colors, and their earth-toned palette makes them about as versatile of a shoe as you’ll find on this list. The mixture of suede and mesh make them breathable like a sneaker, but with style.

Flip the shoe over and you’ll find a beautiful rubber outsole for reliable traction, yet these don’t look like hiking shoes.

Tough Fitness Kicks GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

Are you an active traveler who pushes most shoes to their limits? Or someone who will work out CrossFit-style before racing off to see the sights? Then I wholeheartedly recommend the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers.

The Ballistic Trainers are designed for the traveler who puts their shoes through hell. They’re extra supportive, with tough nylon uppers and durable triple compound rubber. These shoes are seriously durable.

Not only are they built to last, but also are stylish and versatile enough for any casual travel. They’re low-profile sneakers in neutral colors that can be paired with any casual clothing. The GORUCK Ballistic Trainers make for a perfect travel shoe for the always-on-the-move traveler.

Men’s Dress Shoes Florsheim Oxford

Florsheim Oxford men's dress footwear

For men who like to travel in style, the Florsheim Oxfords are ideal shoes for looking good all day and night. I recommend these for business commuters who need to balance professionalism with their active lifestyle.

The Oxfords have a very classic, minimalist style. Their Ortholite X-40 rebound foam soles deliver non-stop comfort no matter how long you’re on your feet.

The Florsheim Oxford is a quality dress shoe that won’t break your budget. Traveling for work is often tiring, but these shoes will cushion your feet and keep the spring in your step.

Women’s Dress Shoes Rothy’s The Point

Rothy’s The Point slip-on women's dress shoes

Rothy’s is a high-quality brand that’s known for transforming recycled plastic bottles into simple, stylish shoes. They have classic silhouettes and a variety of styles to match your personality.

Why have I included them on this list? Not only are they simple and packable, but they’re designed to be washed. I’ve had mine for years, and even after several washes, they look as good as new.

While they cost a bit more, the material quality and durability are well worth the price. For businesswomen on their feet all day, these are the stylish flats you’ve been wanting.

Slip-On Chelsea Boots Blundstone 550

Blundstone 550 leather slip-on chelsea boots

These are my go-to winter travel shoes — versatile and stylish slip-on Chelsea boots that are easy to love. Yes, they’re one of the more expensive options here, but well worth the investment.

If I was traveling and could only bring one pair of shoes, I’d bring these. I can work, hike, or walk all day in them with no problem. Compared to the Lems, the Blundstone 550 are more durable and rugged. They do get a bit hot in warmer climates, so consider the low cuts.

Caution: Blundstone is an Australian brand, and AU and US sizes differ slightly. For example, at REI the boot size on the box is AU sizing but the size selection tool on the website is US sizing. Make sure you’re ordering the right size.

Minimalist Barefoot Sandals Luna Oso Flaco Winged Edition

comfortable travel dress shoes

If you’re traveling to a warm climate and have little need to dress up, I’d recommend the Luna Oso Flaco. In another post, I chose these as the top minimalist barefoot sandal , due to their many excellent qualities for active travelers on the go.

Weighing under one pound per pair, these are lightweight as well as super-compact. You’ll barely notice them in your suitcase or backpack.

The Oso Flaco sandals are the best zero-drop option for travelers who want to connect with the earth. Their lightweight and rugged sole makes them a great choice for your adventures.

Classy Slide-On Sandals Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona comfortable slide-on travel sandals

Our favorite versatile slide-on sandals are the Birkenstock Arizonas. These are a classic style that has transitioned from dorky to stylish over the years.

I sometimes travel in summer with friends who also wear these shoes. We all agree that they’re ultra-comfortable and perfect for all-day treks in the city. Whether you wake up in hostels or highrise hotels, these are reliable urban cruisers.

One caveat, however: on hot, sweaty days in these sandals, my feet sometimes get blisters, so I’ll usually opt for sneakers instead. Other than that, I love my Birkenstocks for traveling.

Unbreakable Flip-Flops Rainbow Double Layer

Rainbow Double Layer flip flops

Rainbows are flip-flops built for the long haul. But be sure to break these in before your trip. They may be uncomfortable at first, but once they mold to your feet, you’ll never want to take them off.

I know people who have worn these for years and swear by them. As with some of the other shoes on this list, these are quite flat and packable. The two shoes sandwiched together are about the thickness of a paperback book.

The Rainbow product guarantee covers all manufacturing defects for life, no matter how old. This lifetime replacement policy is another reason to love these traveler favorites.

Hiking Sandals Teva Universal

Teva Universal sandal for men and women

Want a more substantial and supportive sandal than the Bedrocks? I’d point you to the Teva Universal Sandal — versatile, classic, and more affordable.

These come in several neutral colors that simplify dress-up. I had a pair with copper-colored straps that paired easily with dresses I wore for a summer in Italy.

Teva Universals are lightweight and can be easily stowed. Save space by using their Velcro straps to fasten them to the outside of your backpack.

Criteria for Travel Shoes & Sandals

Shoes flipped upside down showing black soles with the Lems brand logo

This list reflects several key factors you should consider before packing your suitcase with travel shoes. Some may be more relevant than others, based on your travel needs.

No matter where you’re going, your shoes must always be comfortable, especially when the steps start to pile up. Treat your feet right by carefully considering the cushioning and breathability.

An ill-fitting pair of shoes can be distracting and even painful at times, so do your do diligence as you research shoes, read reviews, and reference the sizing guide to ensure you get the right fit.

Styling is important if a shoe is to be truly versatile. I lean more towards minimalist sneakers if I’ll be going to museums all day followed by a relaxing dinner at night. Save space in your suitcase by packing a style that complements as many of your outfits and activities as possible.

We’ve done our best to pick a wide array of shoes that will look good on anyone, and have strayed away from the dorky Rick Steves dad sneakers of the past. (Sorry, Rick.)

Laced vs. Slip-On

I often pack one pair of laced and one pair of slip-on shoes for ease of use and comfort (slip-ons) and athletic performance (laced). There are other styles to consider, too, like boots and sandals, so do your research and choose what’s best for you.

I usually wear my slip-ons for more leisurely activities and wear laced kicks for more high-intensity activities that call for more foot and ankle support.

Breathability

When you’re a high-intensity traveler who puts in a lot of steps , you need a set of footwear that’ll release the body heat that your feet produce. Otherwise, you’re looking at clammy, sweaty feet that are prone to blisters. Gross.

We did our best to pick breathable shoes that will keep your feet dry and fresh as you pile up the miles, so long as you match them up with a capable pair of travel or hiking socks .

Have you ever had a pair of cheap shoes crap out on you midway through a trip? I haven’t, but I can imagine it’d be quite the pain in the butt to replace shoes in a foreign land. I don’t have such problems with my footwear since I always pick travel shoes that are durable and built for the long haul.

To ensure you buy a pair of durable shoes, read reviews, keep a close eye on the materials used to produce them, and only buy well-reviewed products from trusted brands.

Packability

As a minimalist traveler, packability is one of my top priorities. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the airplane while packing my lighter and more compact pair, as well as my sandals.

Saving space in your minimalist travel pack is a top consideration when hitting the road, so pick shoes that’ll pack down small if you intend on traveling light .

Weight and packability go hand in hand. And lighter shoes are better when you’re carrying a weekend backpack, duffle, or suitcase. Shoes tend to be among the heaviest travel items we carry.

Noel, the founder of this website, is an ultralight backpacker who nerds out over the weight of each piece of gear in his backpack. Maybe you should too.

Affordability is another key factor. I want all of the factors listed above, but not at an unfair cost. Remember that your shoes must endure cobblestones, dirt roads, train stations, and the occasional hike. That’s why you don’t see any cheap Amazon knockoffs on this list.

We did our best to recommend an array of well-reviewed shoes across a wide range of budgets.

Which Travel Shoes Will You Lace Up?

Man with blue jeans and black boots walking down a cobblestone road at sunset

This has been my take on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for all day walking. All of these shoes are stylish, comfortable, durable, lightweight and breathable. With any of these, your feet will thank you for making their next travel adventure as comfy as possible.

For a trendy, vintage look, consider these classic Reeboks that our very own product analysts own and love. "I love the simple, classic look that’s easy to dress up or dow n ," says Senior Textiles Analyst, Emma Seymour. "I find them comfortable to wear, but they’re stiffer and offer less cushioning," she warns, so anyone with joint pain or sensitivity should be cautious before purchasing. Still, their goes-with-anything vibe will easily take you from planes, trains and automobiles to restaurants and bars.

We all know that classic sneakers don’t always make you look like a local (or pair well with your cute dinner outfit), so why not consider these trendy slip-ons from Rothy’s? They’re casual, super comfortable and require very little breaking in, according to our footwear experts. Better yet, they’re machine washable so they’ll look as good as new even after your trip.

A Family Travel Awards winner , these popular Allbirds will easily squeeze into any suitcase without adding much weight or taking up much precious space. Our editors swear by how comfortable they are , naming them a must-have for trips to European capitals or destinations that require a lot of walking. On top of their lightweight design, breathability and supportive cushioning, We love the Tree Runners' classic style that comes in a variety of colors.

Sneakers aren’t the only shoes that can be comfortable, we promise. For those looking for a stylish flat for chicer destinations, our fiber scientists turn to this super cute pair of travel shoes from Birdies. Perfect for evenings out to dinner or visits to museums, we're fond of the seven-layer footbed that conforms to your foot and were impressed by the shoe's support and softness. Plus, they’re available in a variety of prints, patterns, colors and even half sizes.

Featuring support that rivals some sneakers, Chacos are a go-to if you hate being stuck inside sneakers or you're heading to a warm destination but still want plenty of security. A 2024 Travel Awards Winner , testers were impressed not only by the sandals’ support but also by the shoe’s built-in traction that helps prevent slipping on a variety of surfaces . Our experts also appreciate that the straps are adjustable so you can customize the perfect fit and that they're offered in a range of colors and prints.

Whether you’re bringing a carry-on or checking your luggage, it’s best to stick with lightweight travel shoes. To keep your total weight to a minimum without sacrificing comfort, our pros suggest this versatile pair of sneakers from New Balance that weighs just 150 grams per shoe . A favorite among our pros, these travel shoes allow for freedom of movement thanks to their breathable, mesh design at the front and can be easily slipped on. They were also recommended by the podiatrists we worked with to put together our list of the best walking shoes .

Vionic shoes are popular among our Lab experts for their high-quality construction and supportive designs. We love this orthotic disguised as a fashionable sandal for all occasions, whether you want to wear them during daytime tours or out for drinks in the evening. We appreciate that the footbed is made of soft microfiber so you’re comfy at all times and that the style is available in various sizes, widths and shades.

If you like to work out while you’re on vacation or think the best way to discover a town is by foot, consider bringing the Brooks Ghost 15 along for the trip. This neutral sneaker can be used for running and walking and is a top choice for anyone seeking stability and control. Our testers loved the Ghost 15 for its cushioning, support and traction and raved about their comfort.

Birkenstocks have even around since 1744 for a reason, and our product analysts and editors swear by the brand’s shoes for those who suffer from foot pain, bunions or other common issues. The Arizona is one of the brand’s most iconic designs and will look stylish (and feel comfortable) as you make your way around a new city while letting your toes breathe. We appreciate the shoe’s durable construction, which features a supportive cork footbed and genuine leather straps . For an even lighter option that’s perfect for the pool, consider the Arizona EVA model that's made entirely from plastic.

HOKA Bondi 8

Bondi 8

Look around and you’ll probably see someone wearing HOKA sneakers . The brand's chunky sneaker style has a huge following. Though popular among runners, this French brand is also suitable for travel days thanks to its shoes' structure and support. To keep you on the move while walking through new cities (or if you’re someone with flat feet), our experts recommend the Bondi 8 for its plush cushioning and breathable mesh upper.

Crocs Classic Clogs

Classic Clogs

It’s hard to find shoes more lightweight, comfortable and convenient than Crocs, especially if you’re headed to a beach resort or plan to spend some time by the pool. Available in tons of fun colors and designs, our pros love how easy Crocs are to get on and off as well as their waterproof design. Just keep in mind that they lack the support needed for longer walks, so it’s best to keep them back at the hotel.

Merrell Moab 3

Moab 3

Heading to a national park this summer? These hiking shoes from Merrell are an absolute must. A top performer in Lab tests and a favorite among our testers, the Moab 3 is both super comfy and supportive. We love that they provide stability on rocky terrains and feature mesh panels to help keep your feet cool . Best of all, they’re on the lighter side for hiking shoes, so they won't weigh you down on your future adventures.

Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt Sneakers

Grand Crosscourt Sneakers

Our editors can't get enough of these classic sneakers from Cole Haan. They're the perfect match to any outfit , whether you're wearing a sun dress or a casual pair of jeans. We love their lightweight construction, soft cushioning and all-leather design that's built to last. They may be the only pair of shoes you'll need for a casual weekend getaway.

Asgard Chelsea Boots

Chelsea Boots

Our Textiles Lab analysts rave about these small, lightweight waterproof booties that are perfect for a city break, whether you're heading to Seattle, London, Paris or another rainy destination. The waterproof design should keep your feet dry throughout your travels, and their value (under $40) is hard to beat. We also appreciate that they're available in other fun colors like red or yellow so you can match them to your raincoat .

Teva Universal Sandal

Universal Sandal

Not only are these fan-favorite Teva sandals extremely lightweight, but they’re super comfortable and perfect for all types of beachwear or water adventures . They’re available in a variety of colors and patterns, as well as a platform style for those who want a little added height. We also appreciate that they feature adjustable straps for a secure fit around your foot, whether you have wider or narrower feet. Plus, they pack down so small that they make great backpacking shoes.

Columbia Ice Maiden II

Ice Maiden II

Planning a trip to a snowy destination or hitting the ski slopes ? These snow boots from Columbia are a favorite among GH Institute analysts. Not only are they noticeably lighter and more flexible than many other snow boots, but this A mazon bestseller has a wide, roomy toe box so your feet never feel cramped. Testers found that the boots offer excellent traction, generous cushioning and just enough warmth and support.

OOFOS OOahh Slide

OOahh Slide

OOFOS are technically recovery shoes that aren’t meant to be worn all day, but you'll be grateful to slip them on at your hotel after a long day of getting your steps in . We also don't see the harm in wearing them during a long flight or by the pool (just rinse them off in the shower should they get dirty). Consumer testers rave about OOFOS' arch support and comfort, as well as how easy they are to slip on and off. Plus, they're so light that you likely won't notice any added weight in your suitcase.

Blundstone Classics Chelsea Boots

Classics Chelsea Boots

The Blundstone brand hails from Australia so you can count on these rugged shoes for your next outdoor adventure. Not only are these Chelsea boots durable, but they’re made of water-resistant leather so your feet stay dry no matter the weather . Testers found this model to be both stylish and super comfortable once broken in and appreciate the built-in pull tabs to make it easier to take the shoes on and off.

ECCO Yucatan Sport Sandal

Yucatan Sport Sandal

Heading to the Yucatan? Whether or not a trip to Mexico is in the books, our pros recommend these sandals for hikes, walks and outdoor activities. Those seeking arch support and stability will appreciate the sandal’s high-quality design and soft, EVA molded footbed , in addition to three adjustable straps. Our testers also claim that the sandals don’t cause blisters and have great traction on all types of terrain.

There’s a fine art to traveling lightly while still looking put-together. The secret? It’s all down to the versatility of the items you pack — think a capsule wardrobe of staples that can be worn in multiple ways, not forgetting a pair or two of travel shoes to keep your feet supported and comfortable.

Of course, you’ll also need to think about your destination. “Consider the weather and terrain or walking demands of your destination and activities,” says award-winning fashion stylist Tara West. “Then, try to work comfort into your packing plans. If you pack thoughtfully, you won’t bring the wrong options or overpack shoes that won’t get worn.” West also suggests planning your looks for each day or activity, helping to streamline your list and keep things organized.

So, to help make things easier for you, we’ve narrowed down the search to 16 of the best travel shoes that cover a range of needs. We made this selection by speaking to West and board-certified podiatrist Dr. Najwa Javed, as well as conducting hours of research across the market, and considering hundreds of online reviews.

Read on to find our top picks of the best travel shoes – from the perennially popular Birkenstock Arizona, to the versatile Tevas sandals, and timeless New Balance sneakers.

The Best Travel Shoes for Different Foot Types and Foot Conditions

  • Best travel shoes for plantar fasciiti s: For those who need shoes for plantar fasciitis , Dr. Javed recommends a cushioned sole. Think a firm, but flexible midsole and padding in the forefoot to help relieve some stress. You can also  add a plantar fasciiti s insole  to your shoes for extra support.
  • Best travel shoes for wide fee t: If you’ve got wide feet, opt for shoes that specifically come in a wide size option or ones that “have soft mesh on the upper that will help reduce pinching for wide feet,” Dr. Javed notes.
  • Best travel shoes for flat feet and high arches : “Travel shoes should be easily removable and soft to allow for swelling during long trips,” says Dr. Javed “If you’re someone that has common foot conditions like flat feet or a high arch, Dr. Javed encourages you to “always buy a shoe with a stable sole to help support the arch of the foot.”
  • Best travel shoes for bunions : As a bunion is a bone deformity, it can cause a lot of pain and discomfort if you wear the wrong footwear. Dr. Javed notes that  comfortable walking shoes  with big toe boxes are an essential if you have bunions. You should look for orthopedic shoes that have flexible uppers, good arch support and a heel no bigger than two inches. Anything higher or with a pointed toe can exacerbate a bunion and cause more pain.

The best travel shoes are a lot like walking shoes : they're built with a level of comfort so you can stand and walk in them for hours. But unlike most walking shoes, a solid pair of travel shoes is much more cushioned, and are also easier to pack into your suitcase. That means they come in clutch if you're dashing at the airport, or lounging at the hotel lobby.

What to Consider

The most important factor is a combination of comfort and support. You don't want to wear toasty slippers if you're driving in the car or trekking through the airport, and you don't need to wear some lace-up hiking boots to get the best support possible. Some travel shoes can lean more on comfort (Oofos, Hoka), while others can lean more towards support (Amberjack, Blundstone). The key is to find a happy medium here and get what suits you and the travel situation at hand the best. For example, if you're taking a long flight to another country, it's probably best to aim for more comfort-leaning travel. But if you're making a drive to a weekend getaway, a shoe with more support (and a tougher build) will likely serve as a better choice.

Packability

Unless you plan on wearing a bigger shoe en route to your destination, your travel shoes should be packable. Certain shoes fit better into different sizes of luggage. To assist in the packing process, we assessed which type of travel bag is the ideal minimal size for packing each shoe: Backpack , Carry-On , or Checked Bag . The criteria used were weight, size, and how easily each shoe could be compressed or folded without looking funky once you arrive at your destination. For example, the Amberjack Original is lightweight for a dress shoe but doesn't compress or fold up, so it should go in a carry on bag, at least.

Travel shoes should also be lightweight, and yes, boots can be lightweight too. Dodge any shoe that's got heavy outsoles and avoid materials that are thick and trap heat. Instead, opt for shoes with foam builds and breathable construction.

How We Selected

We consulted with Men's Health writers and editors on the best travel shoes for men in 2024. Experts, including our gear and commerce editor, John Thompson, reviewed a number of travel shoes and evaluated their comfort, weight, and packability. We also considered price point, as some travel shoes promise a better overall value than others

Below, we rounded up the best travel shoes for all types of jet-setting needs. The picks might not all look like they belong in the same boat, but when you see how they all fit, you'll find each travel shoe we selected serves a unique purpose. Ready to see what's in store?

As it turns out, all it took to make this cozy house slipper into a great travel shoe was a suede upgrade. Lusso Cloud has been producing a range of comfortable slippers and casual slides for years now. With a proprietary three layer sole, every pair offers foamy cushioning, along with a springy bounce. The inside contains a lush fabric that feel great on your feet.

Now that the Nomad, one of the startup's bestsellers, comes in a brushed suede upper. It has transitioned from lounge apparel to the ultimate in-transit shoes. The heel has a fold down feature, which not only turns the shoe into a mule, it makes for easy flat packing. It gives off the elevated appearance of a plain toe loafer, and who doesn't like to look their best while traveling?

After having some experience with the original model, we had to take this upgrade for a spin. After a train trip that took over an hour each way, and a few hours spend sitting at a desk, the cushioning held up strong. Where the Lusso Ckoud really shines is on the move. The specially designed outsole has a touch of bounce, similar to a running shoe, while feeling as light as a house slipper on your feet.

Oofos is most known for its out-of-this-world recovery slides , but the brand has since expanded into other footwear styles. This slip-on shoe style packs top-tier cushioning with a breathable upper that can be taken on and off with ease. We like sliding these bad boys on for long flights as well as for general lounging shoes for wherever your accommodations might be (hopefully a resort somewhere exotic).

The two occasions where this travel shoe really shines is during airline travel and while staying at warm weather resorts. Whether you like to keep your toes contained during long flights or set them free, this is the right footwear for the job. The light and airy design is great for warm weather because it breaths so well and minimizes stress on your feet. If water is involved, this slip-on also dries very quickly.

IRead more: Best Travel Pants

The Ravello Loafer could be described as a house slipper disguised as a loafer, and we mean that in the best way possible. Constructed from a soft textile upper and a flexible rummer outsole, you get the cozy feel of your favorite lounge shoes, but dressier. Even though it isn't leather, Rothys checked all the necessary boxes with this loafer. It pulls off business casual and cocktail attire with ease.

This is the ideal shoe for summer destination weddings because you don't have to pack any other footwear, except maybe some sandals . You can wear this loafer while traveling, especially if a flight is involved, and you can also wear it with a light summer suits . Doing any sight seeing while you're there? This comfy slip on is supportive enough to walk around in all day.

Designed for work, yet cozy enough for play, the Snibbs ROVR is an ideal travel sneaker because it provides all-day comfort. Chef Daniel Schemtob consulted with two doctors to design a lifestyle shoe that can be worn in hot and slipper work environments. The resulting sneaker is not only optimized for restaurant workers and medical professionals, it benefits anyone who spends most of the day on their feet. For example; a tourist who wants to pack all the major sights of a city into a single trip.

A knit mesh upper is lightweight and breathable to combat sweaty feet. Under that, an EVA molded midsole provides ample cushion and bounce in every step. Designed to slip on and off, the upper hugs your foot like a sock. It can even handle those mad dashes to catch your connecting flight.

Some brands really do make 'em like they used to. The Portuguese shoemaker is new to the American market by way of an exclusive partnership with Huckberry. A soft leather interior and padded footbed are meant to go barefoot. With a waxy finish on the upper, there is minor water resistance.

Thanks to a classic leather plain toe look, this travel slip-on works with a wide variety of looks. We like to wear it with everything, from a casual chino suit to swim trunks .

What really sets this mule apart is the crepe outsole. You typically find the material on desert boots and the odd chelsea boot , but it is actually ideal for a travel shoe. The spongy composite is shock absorbing and provides an almost sticky grip. When it wears out—which will happen sooner than later—it is the cheapest type of sole to replace.

Espadrilles are a type of footwear, originating in Spain, with a cotton canvas upper sewn to a woven jute sole. Jute is a rope made from braided plant fiber, similar to hemp. It makes for a light, durable, and supportive footbed that is breathable and naturally moisture regulating. All of these factors make espadrilles perfectly suited for warm weather travel, especially at beaches, lakes, and pools.

Soludos is one of the few major brands still selling authentic espadrilles with real jute soles. Every pair is handcrafted in a way that makes them repairable when any wear and tear occurs. The Seville Smoking Slipper has a cotton canvas upper with a classic slipper shape that comes in a variety of colors and patterns, making for easy vacation styling. Stowing this slipper away is even easier, as it flattens to take up about as much room as a pair of flip-flops.

Hey Dude has taken men's footwear by storm over the past couple of years. The shoes are also super easy to throw on, making them a pair of great summer shoes. Best of all is the fact it is insanely affordable too. Simply put, don't knock 'em until you try 'em.

As long as the attire is casual, there really is no wrong setting for this low-key slip-on. Relaxed vibes are practically sewn right into the sole. However, if you're headed to a watery local, like a beach, lake, or water park, then Hey Dudes really shine. The cushy sole floats in water, so that avoids any sinking mishaps. The whole shoe also dries off very quickly, so it as about as water friendly as a shoe can get.

Dress shoes for traveling can actually be comfortable. Take this pair of oxfords from Amberjack. Named The Original, this shoe is built with heat-activated arch support, durable outsoles, and breathable upper materials (especially suede). Best of all is the fact it can be worn with business casual fits and with more formal business attire.

Think of this travel shoe as optimizing your business trips. The dual density outsole, which is softer in the heel for cushioning and harder at the arch for support, is built to handle extensive walking. If you have to sprint to catch a train, hike from security to your gate, or show out on the dance floor, this is the oxford you want to be wearing.

If you're going for cushioning, then a pair of Hoka's latest Clifton 9 running shoes will serve you right. The Clifton line has been a staple for our fitness editorsm thanks to its lightweight build and supreme level of comfort. When paired up with something dressier, like a loafer for warm weather or an oxford for cooler temperatures, you can cover pretty much any travel situation with.

It won't necessarily pack well in a travel backpack or personal item because of its high-stack cushioning, but if you wear it from point A to point B, you can also double up and have them as a walking shoe or workout shoe on your trip. In fact, it's entirely possible you could go on an entire trip with just this pair of shoes if you really wanted to one-bag-travel the whole thing.

Wearing your favorite boots while you travel is a simple hack to free up space in your suitcase. So which pair of boots are the best? We're big on Blundstones. The #585 is tough as nails, comfortable as heck (with little to no break-in period), and easy to slip on and off. As a Chelsea boot, it pairs well with jeans or chinos for an on-the-go outfits. You can get at least a week out of a couple pairs of pants and a few shirts with this single shoe.

If cold temperatures and precipitation are in the forecast for your vacation, this rugged Chelsea boot will serve you well. The upper is waterproof and the outsole provides slip-resistant traction. While this travel boot isn't insulted, when paired with a good boot sock , it is very warm. Any mud or dirt can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth, to avoid bringing any mess along for the next leg of your adventure.

What Else to Consider

Versatility.

Regardless of where your personal needs lie, your travel shoes must be versatile. You don't want to wear them once on the plane and then never again on your trip. That's just dead weight. Hence the reason why our travel shoes above can feel a bit like a mixed bag. Some of our travel shoe picks are great for lounging once you get to your destination, while others are made to power through your entire trip, whether it be a formal dinner event or a day full of walking.

The Best Travel Shoes, According to Globetrotters

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.0

Whether you’re hitting the slopes in Aspen in the winter or escaping to a faraway beach in the summer (or winter), getting out of town requires the right gear. That of course includes the stuff you’ll need when you get wherever you’re going, but just as important are the things you’ll use in transit — because everyone knows that getting there is half the battle. In our ongoing search for the best travel gear (see what our editors can’t get on an airplane without , and our roundup of the best rolling luggage ), one item that’s always top of mind is a good pair of shoes to travel in — as in, ones that can withstand both airplanes and cobblestones, and are nice-looking enough to wear straight from the plane, or a day on the streets, to dinner. So we asked some people who get around a lot — including travel writers, photographers, tour guides, globetrotters, and other frequent fliers — about their favorites. Read on for their 28 picks, which include sandals, flats, sneakers, and boots. Quick shopping note: A lot of these shoes come in both men’s and women’s, or in unisex, sizes.

Best sneakers for travel

ADIDAS Women’s Cloudfoam Racer

Travel blogger Annette Richmond calls these Adidas Cloudfoam Racers her “go-tos” because they are “super lightweight and breathable,” which makes them perfect to wear on a flight or walking around a new city, she says. “I pair them with leggings or shorts for an athleisure look that’s perfect for hiking, sightseeing, or a travel day.”

Allbirds Men’s Wool Runners

For another lightweight, easy-to-put-on pair of sneakers, Grant Nyquist, the director of adventure at the Outbound Collective , recommends “Allbirds, hands down.” Wearing these makes airport security a breeze, he promises, and like the Adidas pair above, the Allbirds can be worn with most anything — including slacks. Plus, you can even wear them sockless because the wool wicks away any unwanted moisture. “For the price, the quality, and the style, nothing comes close,” Nyquist says.

New Balance Men's 990V4 Running Shoe

Strategist columnist and cool person Chris Black wears a pair of crisp, gray New Balance 990 v4s to complete his “respectable but still comfortable” airport ensemble. His advice: “Honestly, just keep your toes covered and you already look better than half of the airport population.”

Adidas Alphaboost Parley Shoes

If you are the sort of person who needs to fit in a workout while on vacation and would prefer not to pack two pairs of shoes, this Adidas pair works equally well on the streets or a treadmill, according to Ben Pundole, the editor-in-chief of travel magazine A Hotel Life . Their super-lightweight mesh upper allows feet to breathe during speed training, while still looking cool enough to pass for streetwear. Plus, they’re a part of Adidas’s Parley collection, which means they’re made using recycled plastic found in the ocean.

No Bull Project Dark Grey Gum Trainers

Matt Smith, a co-founder of bespoke luxury travel company Black Tomato , told us he prides himself on being a highly efficient traveler who very rarely checks a bag. That’s why he loves No Bull trainers, which he says are “ like four pairs of shoes” in one. (No Bull trainers took the runner-up spot on our lists of status gym sneakers for both men and women . ) Like Pundole’s favorite Adidas pair, Smith says these are comfortable enough to fly in, durable enough to work out in, and have a design that’s sleek enough to bridge the gap between going out to dinner with clients or taking meetings at the office.

Cole Haan GrandPrø Rally Laser Cut Sneaker

For a slightly less sporty sneaker, Tom Marchant — another co-founder of Black Tomato — suggests this handsome leather pair from Cole Haan, which he says are always a safe bet for travel since they’re designed for comfort and flexibility. “They’re incredibly breathable,” he explains, adding “they’re ideal for exploring a bustling metropolis by foot or gearing up for a long haul flight .”

Filling Pieces Low Curve Iceman Trimix 2.0 Sneakers

“The Filling Pieces shoes are the most comfortable I’ve ever encountered and incredibly durable,” according to David Prior, the founder of travel club PRIOR . The keys to a good traveling shoe , he says, are being able to get it on and off quickly, and for it to still feel comfortable when your feet inevitably swell while in the air. “They also need to be presentable enough when you’re getting off the plane and need to go straight into something,” Prior adds, noting that his favorite pair from Filling Pieces meets his criteria for ease of use and comfort, but still look super stylish with their fun colors and chunkier sole.

best travel shoes

“I’m an active traveler, so I know I need footwear that will be comfortable, lightweight, and good-looking,” says Kristin Finton, a category merchandising manager for footwear at REI . She likes this Altra pair for its “versatility” and “understated” style, noting the sneakers are great for walking all day or a quick run in an urban destination. “I love the fit, and they’re a huge REI customer favorite,” Finton adds. Adventure travel consultant Matt Schonwald — who also leads guide trips 100 days out of the year — is another proponent of Altra Footwear, but prefers its “trail-worthy” Altra Lone Peak RSM sneakers as his go-to travel pair.

Salomon Sense Ride Sneakers

If you are planning your upcoming trip to commune with nature, Finton suggests the Salomon Sense Ride sneakers. She wore them to hike and run along a river trail in north Vancouver and she says the grip made her feel secure: “I was especially pleasantly surprised that the grip held over larger wet boulders.” She also wore the same shoe to explore Runyon Canyon, which she describes as being a “super-hardpack, dry, sandy,” trail. “I thought I was going to go down because everyone was slipping on the sand layer, but nope — I felt secure, cushioned.” And as a bonus, she loves the “techy cool” look of the bright color and quick laces.

Vivobarefoot Primus Swimrun FG Mesh

For beach adventures, Josiah Q. Roe , the director of media company Granite & Light (which focuses on outdoor adventure and travel experiences), loves these mesh sneakers from Vivobarefoot, which he wore while on a trip to Roatán. “Hiking, swimming , scrambling over rocks and sharp coral: They crushed it and weigh next to nothing.”

Common Projects Achilles Grained Leather Sneakers

They may cost as much as some plane tickets, but according to Flight 001 co-founder John Sencion, you will not find a more stylish travel shoe (that’s also comfy) than the Achilles sneakers from status brand Common Projects. “From the jetway to the boardroom or the beach , this shoe has the broadest style spectrum than any other shoe,” Sencion says, adding that he’s felt as comfortable wearing them to a meeting at the company’s Tokyo office as he has to the beach in Tulum.

best travel shoes

For a less expensive travel shoe that’s just as good-looking, Mike Arnot, the founder of luggage company Owen & Fred , suggests Greats. “I see tourists wearing Crocs , and a few pilots wearing black Danskos ,” he says. “No. Just, no. I wear a pair of Greats,” which, Arnot adds, he’s been complimented on more than once at an airport — including by some hard-to-impress TSA agents.

Best slip-ons for travel

Sanuk Vagabond Slip-on Sneaker

For a recent two-week stint in Cusco, Peru, Schonwald told us he packed these and another pair of running shoes . But he barely used the running shoes, he said, because the Sanuk slip-ons were so comfortable for walking around town. In addition to being good for sightseeing on foot, he says these easily transition into beachwear if you’re going somewhere that’s part city, part sand. They also pack up well, he adds.

Women’s Lucky Brand Emmie Flats

Foods of New York Tours creative director Am Bandolik only takes one pair of shoes with her when she travels: the Emmie flats from Lucky Brand, which she’s worn “over the concrete of NYC and the cobblestones of Rome.” She loves that they are casual, but still feel feminine and stylish. Plus, they’re foldable, so it is “easy to fit a few colors — your basic black or brown and a fun color — in your suitcase without going over the weight limits on your bags.”

Clarks Women’s Kinzie Light Skimmer

In our roundup of the most comfortable shoes (according to people who stand all day), flight attendant Crystal Roseberry told us about her favorite comfy flats from Clarks, which she wears during long shifts in the air because they are “well made and cute, provide good support, and last forever.”

best travel shoes

Abra Boero, the founder and creative director of Off Season Rockaway , calls Sabahs “the ultimate travel shoe,” because they not only slip on and off with complete ease, but are suitable for so many different climates. “I wear the same pair to the beach that I wear in the winter with wool socks .” Their supple leather molds to your foot, making them super comfortable even after a long flight, and the unfussy design keeps them very lightweight, she promises.

Best boots for travel

A New Day Women's Chelsea Rain Boots

If you’re headed someplace known for rainy days, these weatherproof Chelsea-style rain boots are the ones that travel blogger and photographer Samantha O’Brochta relies on. She says they’re “extremely comfortable” and an “easy way to rock a cute pair of shoes that also double as something useful against inclement weather.” Plus, they cost a fraction of the price of a pair of Blundstones.

White Mountain Women's Santiago Ankle Boot

Richmond says that most people “think orthopedic or ugly” whenever she says the words “comfortable shoe,” but assures that these boots are neither. “White Mountains are comfortable shoes with style.” The ankle boots rise a bit lower on the leg than a Chelsea boot, and have a stacked heel that makes them great on trips where you might need to dress up a bit, she says. The heel isn’t too high, though — just enough to give you extra inches without killing your feet, according to Richmond.

Tod’s Short Suede Ankle Boot

“I don’t consider myself a big shopper, so finding one pair of shoes I can count on time and time again is essential, especially when traveling,” says James Merrett, the third co-founder of Black Tomato . During the winter months , he loves these boots from Tod’s, which offer more protection from the colder elements, but “most importantly don’t make you look like a tourist” due to their more “modern aesthetic.”

Clarks Desert Boots, Oak Suede

For a similar style of boot that costs a lot less, you might consider Clarks Desert Boots — a favorite style of Black , Strategist senior editor Anthony Rotunno , designer Andy Spade , and actress Frieda Pinto . In addition to looking nice enough to wear just about anywhere, the boots are also comfortable. As Pinto put it, “I feel like I can walk a  million miles in them .”

Women’s Ecco Skyler Wedge Booties

Skogg is a fan of these Ecco Wedge Booties for trips in colder weather . “They really held up during my trips to Iceland and Greenland and are lightweight for packing,” she explains. But, most importantly, “They are really comfortable to withstand an entire day of pavement wanderings,” she says.

Danner Mountain Light Cascade Boots

“If you’re looking for one boot to rule them all, the vintage styling of the Danner Mountain Light is iconic, and the one-piece leather design makes for a sturdy boot that can handle anything from a casual walk around Telluride to a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail,” says mountain climber Zina Bougri. (These also happen to be the boots that Reese Witherspoon wore in the movie Wild .) Once these babies mold to your feet, you’ll have a pair of boots to adventure in for years to come,” promises Bougri. She adds that the boots should be completely comfortable within a month. To best break them in, Bougri recommends wearing them around the house for a few days (even just while watching TV for a few hours at a time), then go on a few short hikes.

Danner Mountain 600 4.5” Hiking Boots

Alex Howard, the editor of Lonely Planet magazine , is also a fan of Danner boots, which he wore on a recent research trip to Alaska. “I’m a light packer, so I need a pair of shoes that can do double duty on trips where I’ll be spending as much time on the trails as I do in the city.” He says that these worked great as lightweight, waterproof hiking boots, while still being stylish enough to wear while checking out the craft-brewery scene in Anchorage. “Other hiking shoes are function over form, but these Danner boots have trendy leather uppers and red accents with all the support and ruggedness of proper trail boots.”

Men’s Asolo Agent Evo GV MM

For another pair of “town-to-trail” boots, REI category merchandising manager Tad Summersett likes the Agent Evo from Asolo. Like the Danner boots above, Summersett says these are “super versatile — stout enough to help support while carrying a pack between towns, but stylish enough to not look out of place in the pub that afternoon.”

Best sandals for travel

Birkenstock Arizona Sandals

“I never leave home without my Birkenstocks ,” says Ariel Kaye, CEO and founder of Parachute . “They are classic and fit me like a glove.” Kaye adds that she while also tosses a pair of her Philip Lim mule loafers in her suitcase to “add sophistication for a business meeting” or for dinner with friends, the Birkenstocks remain the “staple” that she slips on almost every single day when traveling from home.

Women's Chaco Z/1 Classic

National Geographic explorer Erika Skogg says she is a huge fan of Chacos because “you can wear them with a casual dress, take them hiking , go for long city strolls, or hang out around the campfire.” Plus, they’re weatherproof and last forever: “The only time I’ve ever had to buy a new pair is when I somehow left one sandal in a hotel room in Reykjavik.” While they may seem like a shoe that would only work in sunny locales, Skogg recommends throwing a pair of wool socks under them if the temperature dips.

Teva Original Universal Sandals (Women's)

Rose Annis, a strategist and writer for CNN’s Great Big Story, wasn’t sure if she could pull off her “ugly cute” Teva sandals. But after buying them, she fell in love. “They are incredibly comfortable, don’t rub or cause blisters, are waterproof, and I feel like the thick, sole makes them look kind of fashion-y.” Annis has worn them to explore everywhere from Oman to the Everglades and even threw them on in L.A. with a silk jumpsuit. Teva sandals were also a favorite of Strategist staffers this past summer, with both managing editor Maxine Builder and Rotunno picking up new pairs (and Rotunno using an old pair to hike the Great Wall of China).

Adidas Adilette CF+ Logo Slide Sandal

“I personally always bring a pair of Adidas foam sliders on my long-haul flights,” says Brian Kelly , the founder of travel website The Points Guy . In addition to being easy to slip on when he needs to run to the bathroom mid-flight, he says the slides are “ultra-comfortable and my ultimate lounging shoes when hanging at a resort or going to the beach.”

Whether you’re packing for a business trip or your annual vacation, space and weight are usually limited. One way to make the most of your luggage allowance is to carefully choose which shoes you take. A lightweight, comfortable pair that can fulfill several different functions (from providing support on your city walking tour or hiking excursion to looking good at dinner afterward) is ideal.

Our travel experts tested 22 of the best women’s shoes for your next adventure, rating each pair for comfort, fit, quality, and value, then choosing winners for a range of categories from “Best Sandals” to “Most Sustainable.”

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

 Amazon

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Knit textile upper, Cloudfoam midsole and outsole | Sustainability: Primegreen recycled materials

Superga Classic Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Mesh upper, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Recycled polyester, rubber, and bio-based foam

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: PET straps, EVA midsole, jute-infused rubber outsole | Sustainability: Straps made from recycled plastic bottles

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Sizes: 5 to 12 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Polyester straps, PU midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Vegan-friendly construction

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

28 Best Travel Shoes For Ultimate Comfort and Support

Stroll pleasantly through your next trip, wherever it takes you, with the 28 best travel shoes for packability, comfort, and style.

20 Best Travel Shoes For Ultimate Comfort and Support

You’ve done the research for the trip of a lifetime—or just a month—but while we love to focus on what travel backpack to carry and what places to explore, it’s easy to forget to focus on what takes us along the way: our feet! You’re not likely to spend your trip on the couch binge-watching Netflix, so finding the most comfortable walking shoes to support your feet during a full day of exploration is essential.

Here at Pack Hacker, we like minimalist travel shoes that are lightweight and easy to pack for your next vacation . Footwear with a wider toe box (or no toe box at all in the case of sandals) feels better after an epic hike or long travel day when your feet start to swell, and zero-drop soles help with balance and posture while taking weight off the more fragile parts of your foot. They’re not for everyone, though, so we’ve included more supportive options on this list, as well. Whichever works for you, it’s usually best to break things in before you hit the road. We wouldn’t want a blister to come between you and the perfect vacation!

To help you get started, we've broken down the best travel shoes on this list into categories.

“Taking Care of Business” shoes are dressy enough to be used at a business meeting, date, or fancy-dress event without sacrificing the comfort you need for walking around all day. You don't want to go too over the top, because then you can't wear them for the rest of the trip.

With “Daily Driver” shoes, comfort and support are king. You'll be wearing these for most of your travels, so it's essential that you can wear them all day. Style isn't as important, but it shouldn't be forgotten, so we’ve chosen options that balance both design and feel.

The “Sandal/Flip Flop” category is pretty self-explanatory. These are for relaxing, visiting the beach, and warm climates. You can also use these on a road trip or as an in-between shoe at the hotel or hostel.

“Comfort” shoes are exactly as the name describes—they're comfortable. Think slippers, slip-ons, and other easy-to-use footwear that you can relax in after a long day on your feet. This category doesn’t often provide the best solo travel shoes, but they can make a world of difference after a long day.

So whether you’re looking for a shoe that will fit in at the Sistine Chapel or one to run the perimeter of the Grand Canyon, we’ve got the best travel shoe for you. Let’s dig in.

Allbirds Wool Runners

Best: Sockless shoe

Category: Daily Driver

Wanting to feel like you're walking on air all day long is for the birds—Allbirds, that is. Whether waiting in line for Space Mountain or trekking to the Trevi Fountain, you’ll appreciate Allbirds Wool Runners' comfortable sole that conforms to the flexibility of your foot.

We recommend Merino wool travel gear for many reasons, including its being naturally antimicrobial. Since Allbirds uses it for these shoes, you can rock the sockless look without worrying about them stinking up your luggage when you repack for the trip home. In fact, we recommend going sockless no matter what, as we’ve found that the shoe’s shape often makes ankle socks fall out of place.

While you could just raid your gym bag for comfortable walking shoes, we prefer a more streamlined look when considering the best shoes for travel. The Allbirds Wool Runners have a more trendy style and will complement the various pieces in your capsule wardrobe. Plus, each shoe is only 1 lb (453.6 g), so they won’t weigh down your bag like other bulky footwear does. And, bonus, you'll save space by leaving your socks home!

  • The materials conform to your feet for supreme comfort
  • We’ve had no issues with stinky feet even when wearing these without socks due to the moisture-wicking and antimicrobal properties of Merino wool
  • These aren’t the best for a serious working out, so we only recommend them for everyday wear
  • Users with sensitive skin might still need to wear socks, as the primary material is Merino wool

Xero Shoes Prio In Detroit

Best: Vegan friendly

The best travel shoes are ones you reach for every day of your trip. When you’re looking for a minimalist shoe to take you through the morning trip to the cafe, a day spent exploring museums and the local park, and that still looks good when you hit the pub for some local flavor, the Xero Shoes Prio are good to grab.

These are an excellent choice for vegan world travelers since Xero uses 100% vegan-friendly products, including rubber, canvas, and microfiber. We love that don't skimp on comfort and durability, either—we barely feel like we’re wearing shoes when we have them on If you start to feel like you need a refresh, there’s a 5,000-mile warranty on the soles. Xero says if they've worn down to a 1 mm thickness on the outsoles at the heel or ball of your foot within that time, you can get a new pair for 60% off.

Unlike many other comfortable walking shoes, these compress to fit easily in your daypack. You can even roll them up, though we don’t recommend leaving them that way as it may put an undue strain on the materials. They're lightweight, too (between 6.4 and 7.6 ounces each, depending on your size), so they won't add much to your baggage limit.

  • They’re vegan-friendly
  • They have a barefoot feel that feels natural on your feet
  • These are not ideal if you’ll be traveling in cold climates
  • The materials will fold after a while of being packed in your bag

Best for: Frugal Travelers

Skechers GOwalk 4 On Location

Best: Versatile travel shoe

You may read the word “Skechers” and think, “that’s not for me.” Bear with us, though, because the Skechers GOwalk4 Travel Shoes are not the clunky designs you remember from the early aughts. These lightweight loafers have a slimmer look you can wear with pants, shorts, skirts, and casual dresses, making packing for one bag travel a breeze. And if loafers aren’t your thing, they’re available in eight different versions for maximum versatility, including lace-up styles.

While you can sport no-show socks with these, the bamboo-lined inner sole resists odors, so you can opt to go sockless, too. Skechers improved the water resistance of these comfortable walking shoes from the prior version, so you're set for whatever Mother Nature throws at you.

These may be the best shoes for your travels, thanks to the Goga Pillars (pillars on the bottom of the shoe that cushion any hard impacts) and responsive midsole cushioning that will put a spring in every step you take. We’ve had no issues walking around for days in this shoe—in fact, we’ve tested these for over a year across seventeen countries and various terrain. Our complaints are largely aesthetic, so if that’s not a concern (or you like the style anyway), this is a great travel shoe to consider.

At just over 5 ounces each, they won’t weigh down your bag, so you don’t have to fear the scale when you check in for your flight. If you do go over, have a look—the soles are prone to picking up rocks, so you may be able to ditch a few ounces if you spy any hiding under your feet.

  • They’re easy to slip on and go
  • The style isn’t very versatile, so they won’t work for a fancy dress event
  • You won’t be able to work out with these

Teva Hurricane XLT2

Best: Hiking sandal

Category: Sandal/Flip Flop

Feel the air on your feet as you traverse the trails and woods of the world with these travel shoes from Teva. The sturdy EVA footbed will take on all-day adventures, and you can adjust the straps to get the right fit. This version of the iconic Hurricane has soft padding on the heel strap to prevent rubbing and blisters, and the updated sole has even better traction than before, so you can grip the ground as you climb the forest floor or the pyramid steps. Plus, the upper is adjustable in three different spots, so it’s really easy to get a customized fit.

They’re environmentally friendly, too: the fast-drying webbing is made with recycled plastic, saving four plastic bottles from landfills. Teva will also keep them out of the trash when you’re ready for an upgrade—the TevaForever recycling program accepts any style of your well-loved Teva travel shoes to save them from the dump.

In our experience, these are excellent shoes for activities like rock hunting because you can wear them into the water. They're secured onto your feet so you won't lose them, and you can pick up all the pretty rocks and shells you want while wading through the water. Since they're small enough to save space in your pack, you can bring your finds home!

  • They’re lightweight but sturdy, so you can wear them anywhere
  • Because of the design, they’re incredibly packable
  • If you get cold feet, these aren’t for you
  • Rocks can sneak inside under your foot and be hard to remove

HOKA Transport

Best: Versatile adventure shoe

The Hoka Transport blends style, comfort, and versatility that can take you nearly anywhere, from city streets to Disney World and a rugged mountain trail. There are men's and women's versions available, so you can get a shoe that works perfectly for your foot. Plus, there are seven colorways available at the time of writing, so you can get a shoe that'll go with your travel clothing or go with something more generic like black, white, or gray to go with any outfit.

The Vibram® EcoStep Natural outsole is durable and will give you a pep in your step to explore new places or head into the office the morning before your weekend getaway. The upper is crafted from CORDURA® RE/CORETM with 100% rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate), which is sustainable, durable, and breathable. Plus, you can go for a run once you arrive if you're feeling sporty the morning after you arrive at your destination. These might be the best travel shoes for your next trip based on the fit, comfort, and versatility!

  • They offer maximum support on all sides
  • The upper is durable and recycled, making it more sustainable
  • They’re a bit sporty looking for some outfits
  • They don’t pack down very small

Brooks Ghost 15

Best: Hybrid running/walking shoe

Brooks Ghost Running Shoes are some of the most popular trainers for runners, walkers, and adventure seekers. Whether you're hitting the asphalt to train for a 5K, walking all day, or want to be comfortable on your feet, these shoes are a solid option. Plus, there are 40 colorways at the time of writing, men's and women's versions, and four widths to choose from. That way, you can find a shoe that matches your vibe and fits your foot with precision!

Despite being lightweight for running, the soles on these shoes are no slouch. It offers support and protection without slowing you down. They look sporty, which is going to only work for some travelers and some trips; however, you can always find a use for a pair of comfortable walking shoes!

  • They’re great for running, hiking, and general use
  • There are a ton of colorways to choose from
  • They look like running shoes, which won’t work for everyone
  • If you take your running shoes while traveling, your pack might smell

Vivobarefoot Gobi III

Best: Barefoot boot

Category: Taking Care of Business

Tossing boots, dress shoes, and tennis shoes in your pack takes up a lot of room in your bag. Luckily, the Vivobarefoot Gobi III may be the best travel shoes on the market for you, since its minimalist boot-like look complements plenty of styles. The Gobi III desert boots strike a balance between urban and rural fashion so you can pack just one pair of shoes for your business meeting and your after-work stroll—you can wear these for the entire trip!

They're made primarily of biodegradable Portuguese leather, with the remainder of the shoe made from other renewable natural materials like organic cotton and an insole made from sugar cane. We’ve noticed that they take a little getting used to because of the barefoot design and stiff (to start) leather, but they’ll soon become the most comfortable walking shoes you own. The cork insole is very slim and flexible, and it helps ease the transition to barefoot soles. Don't be surprised if once you turn minimalist, you don't want to go back; we love feeling grounded as we do with Vivobarefoot.

  • You can use these as boots, dress shoes, and athletic shoes in a pinch
  • They offer a unique, sleek look that isn’t common for barefoot shoes
  • The fit takes some getting used to, both because of the barefoot design and leather upper that requires some breaking in
  • Some users don’t like the cork insole–it can get slimy

Vessi Cityscape

Best: Slip-on sneaker

Set it and forget it with the Vessi Cityscape. We streamline the travel process whenever possible, and the stretch knit upper of the Cityscape lets us lace these comfortable walking shoes up once, then slip them on and off with ease at the airport or Airbnb. These shoes are the best for travel because they have a lightweight but grippy sole and extremely-supportive molded insoles.

In our experience, these shoes feel as if you're wearing a comfortable pair of socks all the time, no matter what you're doing. That doesn't mean it won't eventually get a little sweaty in there, but it's still comfortable.

They’ve got an urban look and feel that’s just as stylish in the beer garden as they are at the Met. They’re waterproof, too—it's built right into the knit fabric so your feet are protected from winter slush and spring rains. Its breathable, though, so your feet won't sweat. If they start developing unsavory aromas, slip the built-in anti-odor layer out for washing to be a good travel companion. You don't want your hotel room to smell like a locker.

  • You can slip them on so you’re ready to roll at a moment’s notice
  • The design works as well at the bar as it does on a first date
  • The sole is squeaky for longer than expected, though it fades with time
  • They run a little small

Lems Chillum Review

Best: Comfortable walking shoes

Diving into the world of barefoot shoes can be jarring for first-time users. The good news is that the Lems Chillum is a good entry point for those who want to try out the style. The pair's relatively thick soles make them comfortable walking shoes while still delivering that barefoot sensation. They're also easy to pack thanks to their lightweight and flexible construction. And, because of its clean style, it also doesn't look radically different from regular shoes if you want to blend in more naturally.

That said, if you're looking for the (nearly) full barefoot shoe experience, then the Chillum probably isn't for you. The thick soles also have a zero drop design that is uniform and level from heel to toe. In other words, while the Chillum is a beginner-friendly best travel shoes pick, it may not satisfy enthusiasts.

  • They’re barefoot shoes that aren’t as shocking for those looking to get into the style
  • The shoes are lightweight and easy to pack
  • They don’t offer the whole barefoot experience, so we recommend enthusiasts look elsewhere
  • There are limited colorways available, though they’re pretty basic, so there’s a chance one will work for you

Chaco Townes Sandal

Best: Day-to-night travel sandals

Sometimes you want to take your travel shoe style up a notch. You can with the Townes, a sleek sandal that adapts to many situations. The leather construction is comfortable when you detour onto a dusty trail to take in the views of a national park or the sights of the river walk.

They look just as nice with jeans as with dresses, and we appreciate the duality when looking for the best sandals for one-bag travel. You can slip these on at home, get through security and your flight, and then hit the ground running to take in all the sights when you reach your destination, all without switching shoes (though we’d opt for the socks and sandals look before walking barefoot at the airport).

The full-grain leather Chaco Townes is available in a few different designs topped with a metal buckle. Choose from neutral colorways knowing you’ll have comfortable walking shoes, thanks to the cushy footbed that cradles your feet with substantial arch support. Just be prepared for some squeaking until they break in—we’ve noticed the soles are a pretty loud right of the box.

  • They have a more formal feel without losing the athletic look we often see in similar sandals from Chaco
  • You can wear them at the beach, around town, and in the store
  • Avoid getting them wet if possible, as we’ve noticed they can get a bit slimy and the leather takes a while to dry
  • We don’t love them for days with a ton of walking—at least not until they’re fully broken in

Vessi Weekend

Best: Easy on and off

What makes the Vessi Weekend the best travel shoes is their easy use. Even with the lace-up tennis shoe design, they can be slipped on quickly when you need to rush out the door—great for making it on time for your flight and removing them at TSA without holding up the line. They also have a surprisingly breathable waterproof design and a soft footbed that won't leave you sore after a long day of touring the city.

Watch out for dirt, though. The Weekend's fabric is fairly susceptible to soot and mud and may catch some blemishes as you walk down the sidewalk. We dig the light colorways, but it's a shame whenever it gets marked up. That said, it's no harder to clean than other casual shoes.

  • We can slip them on and off quickly and easily
  • It’s a pretty versatile look even though they lean on the more casual side
  • They pick up dirt and grime easily; we still haven’t been able to remove a mysterious stain from a trip to Thailand
  • The white soles dirty quicker than the upper (unless you go with the all-white shoe, in which case all bets are off)

Earth Runners Primal Sandals

Best: Minimalist sandal

When Pack Hacker team members dream about the best sandal for travel, this is the footwear we're wearing. Seriously, though, the Earth Runners Primal Sandals are a minimalist packer's dream: they're extremely thin, lightweight, and flexible. You can run in them or stroll down the beach without that slapping noise you get with flip-flops. We recommend just walking in the rain since it gets a bit slippery, though the bottom tread provides excellent traction otherwise.

What sets these apart from other best travel shoes is how form-fitting they are. Once you break them in, you won't even notice they're there because of the barefoot sandal design. You want to focus on that once-in-a-lifetime sunset or the friends you're on safari with, after all—not your shoes. The best travel shoes blend into the background, so you don't feel your feet after a day spent standing on them, and these fit the bill.

  • They don’t slap onto the ground while you’re wearing them
  • The ultra-minimalist design takes up virtually no space in a travel backpack
  • The thin strap isn’t as secure as other everyday sandals
  • These have a barefoot design that takes some getting used to

Rothy's The Sneaker In Portugal

Best: Eco-friendly travel shoe

We love exploring the world, so we like to be kind to Mother Earth. These travel shoes from Rothy’s check that mark—they spin their signature thread from recycled plastic, and about 13 bottles are kept from landfills with each pair of these sneakers. The company is working to be LEED- and TRUE-certified by using green building practices and getting down to zero waste.

Being eco-friendly doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or style, either. These comfortable walking shoes slip on for easy traveling—just pop them off and on as you wend your way through TSA. Pick from a variety of classic and seasonal colorways and patterns—from solid navy or white to leopard—and pop them in the washing machine when needed. The shoe fits true to size for most, though we recommend sizing up if you like to pair them with no-show socks, as they don’t stretch over time. If you’re hunting for the best travel shoes that are sustainable, these hit the mark.

  • They’re crafted from recycled plastic but don’t feel like it
  • We dig how easy it is to slip them on
  • They work for every occasion—well, within reason
  • We don’t think they’re the best choice for multiple days of extended walking

Best for: Relaxed Travelers

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA Review

Best: Beach sandals

BIRKENSTOCKS aren’t typically what we reach for when combing the beach, but since the Arizona Essentials are made with EVA instead of cork and leather, we feel free to dash into the waves to rescue the Frisbee without fear of ruining them.

Let the jokes about “BIRKEN-Crocs” fly, but these are lightweight, waterproof travel shoes that still rock the contoured footbed we love in our #birkies. Depending on the colorway you’re sporting, they can resemble leather, and the sides of the soles have a textured look that mimics a traditional pair. The adjustable straps allow us to find the perfect fit, and the bold colorway options let us sport our style.

In our experience, these shoes are the perfect option for a road trip because of how durable and easy to slip on they are. If you need to run into the gas station to pay or get snacks, you can easily throw them on and go. If you want to unwind in the car without shoes on, pop them back off. They’re rugged enough to hold up to short hikes or walks around the campground. After you’re done climbing the dunes, just rinse the sand off—they’ll be clean and dry in no time. If you plan to hit the beach frequently, these might be the best travel shoes for you. Just don’t be surprised when the lighter colorways start to show dirt—our white pair isn’t quite as shiny as it used to be, though we’ve noticed stains only stick around if you leave them on for a while.

  • You can pop them on and off quickly, whether you’re barefoot or wearing socks
  • They’re durable and waterproof, so they’re great for vacations or beach trips
  • The entire shoe is one material, so there’s no cushy footbed to add insulation or grip
  • You probably won’t get any compliments if you choose to wear socks with them

Tieks Ballet Flats

Best: Women’s dress shoe

A little black dress can fit the bill for nearly every occasion, so why not a little black shoe? Tieks has taken this closet staple and turned it into the best shoe for travel with a split sole that allows the ballet slippers to fold in half, with the toe tucking into the heel to fit easily in your carry-on bag. The soles are non-skid and have a cushioned instep to keep you comfortable throughout the day and into the night, and the padded back protects against rubbing.

While we’re recommending a neutral color for versatility, they come in a wide variety of shades and patterns if monochrome isn’t your thing—all with the same bright teal sole. The disadvantage is that the sole is visible even when you’re wearing the shoe, giving you a pop of color whether you want it or not. However, we like that the full-grain Italian leather develops a patina over time, and the simple design looks just as well with lululemon leggings as with a flowy dress, so these are the best travel shoes for day to night.

  • They fold up to pack down incredibly small to fit into your pack
  • They’re easy to dress up or down for everyday or formal wear
  • Every model has a teal sole, which is visible even when you’re wearing the shoe
  • The folding design is great for storage, though we find them hard to flatten out again

Nike Free Run Road Running Shoes

Best: Vacation running shoe

You may be on vacation, but training waits for no one. What to do? Pack a running shoe that's the best for travel with its malleable upper, of course.

The Nike Free Run 2018 is good for getting in shorter runs, and its flexible design is easy to fit in your tote or backpack for that last-minute trip to Chicago. They weigh less than many other running shoes, though you don't have to sacrifice performance. The rounded heel rolls with the ground as you stride, providing support in a lightweight option.

Lace them up and live like a local, running along Lake Michigan and seeing the pleasure boaters, water taxis, and more while you get in your morning exercise. The soft, lightweight sole mimics your foot's natural movement by expanding and contracting with every landing and push-off, so you'll still have a spring in your step when it's time to hit Navy Pier and the Field Museum. For trips short and long, these are some of the best travel shoes to get you there.

  • You can wear them for more intense workouts or long walks across the city
  • They slip in quickly and easily
  • They look sporty (maybe in a good way)
  • They aren’t the best running shoes on this list

New Balance 574 Core

Best: Dad shoe

Everybody needs a pair of dad shoes. That might seem like an insult, but we don't mean it as one. A dad shoe is where comfort, practicality, and price take priority over style. That's not to say that the New Balance 574 Core isn't a stylish shoe (we think it is); however, you won't see these strolling down the runway at fashion week. That said, what they don't have in cutting-edge fashion sense, they make up for in versatility, comfort, and support for your feet. Those are important things to think about while traveling!

These shoes can be dressed up or down. You probably shouldn't wear them to a wedding, but if you did, you'd probably get less crap than you think you might. These aren't active shoes, but because of their design, you can wear them walking around all day without much discomfort. You won't find them in vibrant colorways, but their subdued look, combined with the versatility we've gone over, make them one of the best travel shoes on this list.

  • These shoes have support, comfort, and stability without going over-the-top in design to get it
  • We dig the colorway options available
  • They’re dad shoes, for better or worse
  • You can’t easily work out in them, so they’re best as a daily driver

Sperry Men’s Authentic Original Boat Shoe

Best: Boat shoe

Be the captain of your adventure when you slip on Sperry travel shoes. These are the original boat shoe, and they stand the test of time, getting more comfortable with each wear. The hand-sewn full-grain leather moccasins mold to fit your feet like a comfy pair of slippers. Lace them up to get the perfect fit, and they also go on and off with ease, smoothing the path through security. We’ve noticed they run a little big, so we recommend sizing down a half size. Plus, the leather will break in over time, so they’ll loosen up even more.

Luckily, you'll look stylish in one of several neutral colorways, which pair well with jeans, shorts, and skirts. The whole family can get set in Sperry and stay comfortable walking for hours staring at new sights, thanks to the Ortholite cushioning. Then take an evening stroll along the boardwalk and salute the Skipper—you'll feel right at home. If you love being on the water, these are some of the best travel shoes on the market.

  • They slip on fast and easy
  • They’re on the dressier side for a slip-on shoe
  • You’ll need to take care of them to keep them from smelling over time (or just wear socks more often than not)
  • Your feet might get cold on chillier evenings on the water

Clarks Women’s Breeze Sea

Best: Support for bad feet

The high-density foam and EVA midsole Clarks uses in its Breeze Sea sandals make you feel like you’re walking on a cloud—we think that’s why they call them Cloudsteppers. What’s in a name, though? A rose is still a rose, and these sandals have a supportive, softly-lined Ortholite footbed to cushion your soles throughout your travel adventures. Clarks built its brand on designing shoes for those with foot problems, and these sandals are no exception. They’re travel shoes that will keep you going throughout the day, whether at the beach, the farmer’s market, or the museum, so you don’t have aching arches by dinnertime.

They tend to run a little big, although there’s a hook-and-loop closure so you can find the perfect fit, and the narrower design helps keep them from feeling too loose. Choose from a rainbow of colors to match every outfit and occasion, including some fun metallic options, to be set for wherever the breeze blows you.

  • They’re incredibly comfortable thanks to high-density foam and EVA
  • They offer support for those with foot issues
  • They run slightly large while still being on the narrow side of things
  • They can look a little—ahem—outdated depending on the color you choose

OOFOS OOriginal Sandal

Best: Supportive sandal

The OOFOS OOriginal Sandal comes highly recommended by Pack Hacker Pro Member William, so we knew we had to try them for ourselves. William raved about their comfort and how long they last and described to us that he’s had multiple pairs over the years. Once we got them at our HQ in Detroit and saw their durability first-hand, it was game over! In addition to being a more durable thong-style flip flop, the sole is thick enough to offer more support than we're used to getting from this kind of shoe.

That said, they don't pack down as small as other flip flops and sandals, which might not be ideal for ultralight packers. That said, you can compress them small enough, and the comfort offered by this model makes them a worthy addition to the best travel shoes post!

  • They’re more durable than others of a similar style
  • They have more support than you’d expect
  • They don’t pack down as small as other sandals
  • Some users don’t like how thick the upper is

Tropicfeel Monsoon Sneakers

Best: Water shoe

Climbing Dunn River Falls is an iconic excursion in Jamaica, but there’s nothing more creepy than renting swim shoes from a stand by the side of the road. Plan ahead and pack your Tropicfeel Monsoon Sneakers since these are water-resistant travel shoes you can wear on land or in the sea.

They’re super lightweight and packable, which is why they made it on our Vacation Packing List , and the breathable mesh and built-in drainage holes make them a no-brainer for dashing into the waves. In fact, they’re so breathable that we can actively feel a breeze come through the shoe when we’re wearing them outside. That’s great for keeping your feet cool, though it’s also why we recommend wearing socks on colder days and putting these shoes away for the winter.

Tropicfeel has sped up the process of tying your shoes with sprint laces, although there’s a learning curve: if the knots are tight, the laces can stick out, but when we move the knots to the end, the shoes can get a little loose. Play around to find what works for you, and then find the nearest waterfall to climb on your next adventure.

  • They’re water-resistant and include holes to let water drain out if you wear them as water shoes
  • You can comfortably wear them through the city, on sand, or in the water
  • It takes a while to get used to the laces
  • They aren’t as comfortable when they’re soaked

Greys The Outdoor Slipper Review

Best: Travel slipper

Category: Comfort

On a long-haul flight, we want to lay back and relax like we’re on the couch at home to help the hours speed past. Get that couch-potato feel, without the slouchy look, with The Outdoor Slipper from Greys. They are the perfect travel shoe if you’re focused on comfort because the wool blend is soft and won’t cause your feet to overheat, and the sole and reinforced toe box make them sturdy enough to wear outside without the fear of slipping you get in plush-bottomed slippers.

Yes, these are slippers, but they’ve got a sleek look you won’t be embarrassed to be seen in, thanks to the fact that they have full coverage on the heel. You don't want anyone to see that hole you're hiding in your favorite socks, after all. They’re odor-resistant, too, for the comfort of your travel companions. Once you reach your destination, switch them out or keep them on—we won’t judge your travel shoe choice!

  • They’re easy to slip on and off at a moment’s notice
  • The materials are incredibly cozy
  • Some users note that their feet sweat more than usual in them
  • They take up a lot of room while traveling, and since they’re not designed for everyday wear, we recommend bringing them on trips where you’re spending lots of time indoors

Lems Mesa In Detroit

Best: For rugged adventures

When you're looking for a travel shoe that can conquer cobblestone streets, climb mountains and run a 10K race, look no further than the Lems Mesa. Oh, and did we mention it's also great for exploring new places and taking you from gate to gate at the airport?

While they give off an athletic shoe vibe, it's still a pretty nice aesthetic, provided you're not trying to make a business presentation. The exterior of the vegan shoes is lightweight, breathable, and fast-drying knit mesh, so wearing these shoes feels a lot like wearing socks. And since they dry so quickly, you don't have to worry about repacking them after a sudden downpour or if you end up with sweatier-than-usual feet after a day of walking around a new city.

The EVA midsole and molded PU footbed are comfortable enough to do that, though, and the outsole is a textured rubber that grips most surfaces out there, from concrete to gravel to dirt. Even so, you can fold these puppies in half to squeeze them into your travel backpack. While we wouldn't recommend doing so for long because it can strain the materials, their compressibility helps check all the boxes of a good travel shoe.

  • They’re durable and rugged enough for the roughest outdoor adventures
  • They’re comfortable in any environment
  • Not a ton of structure compared to other outdoor shoes
  • The tongue may bother those with thicker ankles because of the size

Allbirds Tree Dasher 2

Best: Lightweight versatile shoe

The Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 is an everyday shoe that can be worn everywhere, making it the ultimate travel companion for trips of all shapes and sizes. At the time of writing, there are 16 colorway options, so you can get a pair that matches your vibes, too. The lyocell upper is comfortable and breathable, so you can get through the day without too much foot sweat.

In addition to having outstanding comfort, this shoe is stylish, too. Depending on the colorway that you choose, these sneakers can be dressed up or down, worn for a light workout, or taken on a hike. No matter where you go, they’ll make you look like you belong there!

  • You can wear them anywhere, from the city to the trail
  • There are more than a dozen colorways available
  • Those with ankle issues. might want more support
  • The lighter colorways are challenging to keep clean

Best for: Full-time Travelers

Vivobarefoot Ra III

Best: Barefoot everyday shoe

When you’re looking for an everyday shoe that doesn’t sacrifice minimalist form for design, we dig the aesthetics of the Vivobarefoot Ra III. We like that barefoot shoes like the Ra III easily compress to fit inside limited bag space, and these shoes look nice enough to wear just about anywhere, whether you’re taking in local museums and markets or getting a little fancier for dinner out.

The Oxford-style lace-up shoe is made with Wild Hide leather, a naturally scarred leather of free-roaming cattle raised by small-scale farmers in Ethiopia. While this makes us feel good from an ethical-sourcing standpoint, we also like that the flexible and breathable shoes will continue looking as good as the day we got them because we plan to take them on trips for years. While the low-top design isn’t as good for protecting your ankles on motorbikes in our experience, the packability is a worthy trade-off. And hey, bringing these shoes along on your next trip means you can save space on socks, too.

  • They compress enough so you can fit them into nearly any travel backpack
  • The leather is durable and offers a unique look
  • The look feels stuck in-between dressy and casual
  • The design doesn’t offer much protection for your ankles

Best for: Sustainable Travelers

VEJA Condor 2 Road-Running Shoes

Best: To complement a variety of styles

With Alveomesh uppers that are light and breathable and an inner sock construction for comfort, the VEJA Condor 2 Road-Running Shoes are a supportive shoe that’s pretty easy to keep clean. VEJA uses vegan and sustainable materials throughout its product line, and while some models are sportier, we think these shoes pair well with casual attire and slightly dressier clothing. That makes them a good choice for your capsule wardrobe, provided you’re not planning to travel to a wedding or another more formal event.

More than half the materials used in the shoes are recycled or bio-based, like the uppers, linings, and laces, which come from recycled plastic bottles. The outsoles are 30% Amazonian rubber that’s naturally sticky, so you won’t slip on the trail or a wet sidewalk. And if you want to work out on your trip, these will be great travel companions.

  • They offer a ton of support and sole comfort
  • The materials are crafted from recycled plastic bottles
  • They can run tight on the sides
  • There are limited colorways available

adidas Ultraboost Light Running Shoes

Best: Hypebeast comfort

We know what you might be thinking: Ultraboosts?! On the best travel shoes post?! Well, hear us out. These Adidas kicks are stylish and have enough support to be comfortable all day, whether exploring a new city, wandering through new museums, or taking a short hike. The sole is thick so that you can rely on them on uneven city streets, too. Some users might not like the raised heel section, but we think it adds comfort and structure to the shoe. It isn't suffocating, either, which is a perk for people with sweaty feet.

In addition to being comfortable, the Adidas Ultraboost's stylish design comes in a variety of colorways. Plus, there are spin offs that stay true to the Ultraboost comfort level while adding uniqueness to an incredibly popular shoe. Watch out—sometimes, these special releases will cost you an arm and a leg! A quick search on StockX showcases unique models ranging from $100 to just under $3,000, proving that there's something here for every style and price range.

  • We love the style for specific trips
  • You’ll be comfortable in these all day long, even while crossing an unfamiliar city
  • They don’t dress up at all
  • It takes a while to get used to the heel design

Taos Winner Sneakers

Best: Leather travel shoe

The täōs Winner is one of the more unique shoes on this list, and we're here for it. The upper is crafted from leather, which is durable and looks sleek. There are white and black models available. We like both but wish something was in the middle, too. In addition to lacing like a standard pair of shoes, there's a zipper on the side to give you easier access to putting the shoe on and off. This is handy for those who like to get up and go in a jiffy and at the airport when you're putting your shoes on and off at security.

Despite looking more like a high-top in photos, these feel more like a mid-cut shoe. We find them supportive, especially on the inside of your foot, and are comfortable enough to wear around all day. If you aren't used to wearing a shoe that rides higher up on your ankle, it can take some getting used to, but we’ve noticed they break in quickly. The black model feels somewhat dressy, which has perks, but it can feel too formal for some outfits, limiting its use as a travel shoe.

  • We dig the leather upper
  • The zipper is handy for popping them on and off at the airport
  • We wish that there was a colorway other than black and white
  • Getting used to the fit takes a while

There you have it—the best travel shoes for any situation, whether you’re traveling by road, by air, or by sea to take a trip around the world or around the corner. Check out our website for full reviews on some of this footwear and other great travel clothing and accessories , and start planning your next vacation.

Made from a recycled water bottle thread, these 3D knitted flats have just the right amount of stress to deal with swollen feet from flying.

Post-trip, Rothy’s can be simply tossed in the washing machine to come out looking clean and new. The Points come in a beautiful array of colors in prints, including our favorite neutral blush pink , a fresh new deep teal , or a rose and purple double stitch .

comfortable travel dress shoes

Walking is an inevitable part of travel, and you either love it or hate it. Either way, after sightseeing for a few hours, foot pain can stop you in your tracks. I once logged 10 to 20 miles a day around Italy. Not too long after that trip, I fell from a zipline and broke a few metatarsals in my left foot. Now I can barely make it through a long afternoon at the mall. My mom struggled with plantar fasciitis, which was exacerbated by long hours on her feet working retail. She was constantly in search of a new shoe or insole that could help.

If you suffer from foot problems and are on a similar quest for supportive, well-fitting shoes, your neverending journey can finally come to a close. Comfortable, functional Orthofeet footwear can set you on the path to mobile, pain-free travel.

Orthofeet orthotic footwear features

Meet Orthofeet

State-of-the-art footwear technology and advanced foot biomechanics come together to make innovative Orthofeet shoe construction and anatomical orthotic insoles. Millions of wearers have experienced improved mobility, enhanced comfort from heel to toe, and relief from foot, heel, knee, and lower back pain.

Styles of Orthofeet orthopedic shoes: sneakers, sandals, boots, and moccasin slippers

Several Styles Of Shoes

Think sneakers are your only option for comfy footwear? Think again. Orthofeet offers several styles of casual and dress shoes for both men and women. In addition to sneakers, choose from boots, sandals, heels, pumps, Mary Janes, slippers, slip-ons, and work shoes.

Select Shoes By Your Condition

Whether you’re in the market for plantar fasciitis shoes, diabetic shoes, flat feet shoes, heel pain shoes, neuropathy shoes, arthritis shoes, wide shoes, or bunion shoes, Orthofeet has the perfect pair of orthopedic shoes for you. Select shoes by your condition:

  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Ball of foot pain/metatarsalgia
  • Haglund’s Deformity
  • Heel pain/heel spurs
  • Knee and hip pain
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Overpronation
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Swollen feet/Edema
  • Gout in foot

Simply select specific foot pain and gender then click “see more shoes” to choose the shoe style and select any special features you’re after, such as waterproof. You can also read more about the best shoes for each condition — like the best hiking boots for plantar fasciitis or sandals for diabetes — on Orthofeet’s blog .

Features of Orthofeet orthotic footwear

Biomechanically engineered orthotic shoes help with foot problems and poor posture. But Orthofeet goes the extra mile by offering several unique comfort features so you can get the exact fit you’re looking for.

Deep And Wide

All Orthofeet shoes are made with extra depth and a wide toe-box , but wide and extra-wide sizes are also available. Extra-depth makes for a relaxed fit and leaves room for custom-made orthotics. In addition to providing more space for your piggies, a wide, roomy toe-box eases pressure on bunions , hammertoes , Morton’s Neuroma , and swollen feet.

Stretchable

A variety of shoes and sandals feature a stretchable upper design to conform to the contours of your feet. According to Orthofeet, these stretchy shoes “ease pressure and provide pain relief for sensitive feet, such as bunions, hammer-toes, corns, and swollen feet.”

Orthofeet Arch Booster for adjustable arch support

Arch Support

Orthofeet’s innovative Ortho-Cushion™ system has a contoured orthotic insole with anatomical arch support. But if that doesn’t do the trick, then the Orthofeet Arch Booster can be added. Simply slip in beneath the orthotic insole for increased arch support as well as reduced pressure at the heel and ball of the foot.

Strap No-Tie Closures

For those who have difficulty tying laces, Orthofeet has velcro strap shoes . There are also tie-less closure tennis shoes that look like they have laces but actually fasten with a strap.

Lined For Maximum Comfort

Orthofeet shoes feature a protective interior lining that’s soft and smooth with extra foam padding. Gentle on feet — not to mention bunions and hammertoes — it eliminates pressure points for enhanced comfort and protection.

Each pair of Orthofeet orthopedic shoes comes with two sets of removable fitting spacers

Removable Fitting Spacers

Customize your fit with removable fitting spacers. Each pair of shoes comes with two sets of spacers: 1/16-inch (2mm) and 1/8-inch (3mm). This way, if the shoes are too loose, you can insert the fitting spacers to make them fit more snugly.

Even More Features

Whether you’re shopping for waterproof , vegan-friendly , or therapeutic shoes, Orthofeet is a shoo-in. They even carry styles with an adjustable heel strap for narrow or wide heels, shoes for braces/AFOS , and non-slip shoes !

bio-soft bamboo socks from Orthofeet have loose, non-constricting fit

Orthofeet’s footwear doesn’t end with orthopedic shoes. They also carry cozy socks! Made with Bio-Soft Bamboo, their Diabetic , low-cut , and general comfort socks have a loose, non-constricting fit. Perfect for sensitive tootsies, the soft, cushioning socks feature a smooth toe seam. Reviewer Carla Russell raves, “I love ’em. I’ll never bother with other socks again! They feel like cozy, warm fuzzy blankets on my feet. They make me wish for a full-body sock. Wouldn’t that be amazing?” Absolutely!

Split-toe bunion socks have a seam that separates the big toe and straightens it. Not only are these soft socks non-binding, non-constricting, and moisture-wicking, but they are also thinner than most bunion relief socks, so they fit well with shoes.

Orthofeet insoles components diagram

Whether you need arch support or have flat feet , all Orthofeet shoes come with biomechanical orthotic insoles. Made for women and men , these comfortable insoles can help relieve pain, reduce pressure, provide support, and help alleviate corns and calluses. Don’t take our word for it, just read these rave reviews .

Five-Star Reviews

“No pain in every step. These insoles really work. They made the ortho shoes I ordered more comfortable. I highly recommend them to all ortho shoes buyers.” – Gennie Trapp

“These orthotic insoles fit perfectly in three pairs of my favorite shoes. My right foot twists to the side. The insoles balance my body. Without the insole, my right knee and ankle hurt.” – Felicia Johnson

“Love the Orthofeet insoles. I have flat feet and the insoles make all the difference in the world on how long I can be standing on my feet.” – Pamela J. Young

Plantar Fasciitis Inserts And Insoles

Orthofeet plantar fasciitis inserts and insoles are designed with “anatomical arch support that prevents the foot from rolling inwards and re-aligns the foot and ankle,” according to the company. A contoured heel seat cushioned with foam helps relieve pressure on the heel. They carry plantar fasciitis orthotics for boots, arch support for shoes without removable insoles, and even shoe inserts that fit in heels.

1. An iconic  Teva sandal  because it won't take you long to realize why they're a cult favorite. The signature strappy design keeps these supportive, lightweight sandals securely attached to your foot without any slipping or rubbing, thus letting you confidently navigate just about any terrain. Island hiking, anyone?

Plus, the rubber soles will come in handy on slippery surfaces!

Promising review: "Comfiest shoes on the planet. I bought them for my trip to Thailand, which included a heavy amount of walking and hiking. I now wear them all the time, even for nonadventurous activities. They are so darn comfortable and have great grip. " — Caroline V.

Get it from Amazon for $49.78+ (available in sizes 5–13 and 14 designs — not all designs available in all sizes).

2. A handmade pair of closed-toe  huarache platform sandals  if you need some extra height (those flowy pants you just bought are a little on the long side), but also refuse to commit to walking around in heels all day. These beauts are the perfect compromise!

Get it from Macarena Collection on Etsy for $46.42  (originally $55.90, available in sizes 5–10 and in more colors via their Etsy shop ).

Promising review: "I love the Arizona style. They are easy to adjust and easy to slip on and off. I suffered from a heel spur, and I was able to walk without pain when I changed over to the Arizona sandals. I took several pairs of shoes on vacation, and never once did I switch over to a different pair . I can walk for long periods of time with comfort. They are my first choice of shoes." — Glenn B.

Get it from Amazon for $44.95+ (available in sizes 6–11, as well as in narrow sizes, and in nine styles — not all designs available in all sizes).

4. A pair of  Dr. Scholl's kicks  so you can ditch the laces while still enjoying the benefits of supportive and comfy sneakers. Did I mention these have memory foam cushioning? Because they do, and you will love it.

FYI: These are made from recycled bottles!

Promising review: "I bought these shoes to wear on vacation to the Grand Canyon. I did a lot of walking on that trip, and my feet never hurt, and I still looked cute. Then, a few months later, we went to Durango, Colorado and did a ton of walking, and again, my feet never hurt. I washed them and let them air dry several times over the next year, and they came out great every time. They soon became my daily shoes to wear around the house. I have already bought a second pair to replace them so I can still look cute and be comfortable and wear the first pair when I water the garden. I would definitely recommend these shoes!" — J. Perkins

Get it from Amazon for $37.99  (available in sizes 5–13, including wide sizes, and in 27 designs — not all designs available in all sizes).

5. A beautiful Tory Burch ballet flat  since these darling little shoes fold up nice and compact for easy packing — and good thing, too, because you've only got about an inch of space left in your suitcase!

Promising review: "I got these for a trip and love them! Tory's travel ballets are a beautiful soft leather, very comfortable, and will fit anywhere when traveling . I like all the fun colors but got black ones...will be getting another pair!" — lheff

Get it from Amazon for $227+  (available in sizes 4–13 and eight colors — not all colors available in all sizes) or Nordstrom for $148.80+ (originally $228+; available in sizes 4–13 and in seven colors).

6. Or, for something a bit less extravagant, a  classic pair of ballet flats that are just as cute and convenient, only cheaper!

reviewer wearing the black flats

Those 25,000+ 5-star ratings don't lie!

Promising review: "I normally cannot wear flats because they give me terrible blisters on the back of my feet. These didn't! Bought these in nude for a city vacation with a lot of walking, but where sandals aren't necessarily worn, and these were perfect! They obviously don't have the support of sneakers, but I am so happy to finally have a cheap pair of flats that don't give me blisters . I did break them in with thin socks on around my house before wearing them out, and when possible, I wear them with little sock liners. Also — I was able to fold these in half like Tieks and fit them in a semi-small purse to change into to dance at a wedding! Score!" — Kate

Get it from Amazon for $21.33+ (available in sizes 5–15, including wide sizes, and in 21 designs — not all styles available in all sizes).

7. A gorgeous leather slide  because it'll take you about .0002 seconds to throw your shoes on and complete the day's ~lewk~...and there's not a second to be wasted when you're on vacation, right?!

MiucciaStudio is based in Indonesia, and specializes in the *dreamiest* handmade shoes and bags.

Get it from MiucciaStudio on Etsy for $76.50 (originally $90, available in European sizes 36–43 and in six colors).

8. A classic pair of slip-on sneaks made from a breathable and stretchy canvas material, which means your feet will sweat less and probably won't rub too much either...the two things that tend to cause blisters. Take it from me, blisters on day one = no bueno.

reviewer wearing the purple slip ons

Promising review: "I bought these to take on a trip; they arrived, and I packed them without breaking them in — no worries, they are so comfortable, I wore them the whole trip . Love, love these shoes! This is my second pair, first have lasted a year, and I wear the old ones still. They wash up nicely, too! Highly recommend!!!" — Lori M.

Get it from Amazon for $23.85+ (available in sizes 5.5–12, including select wide sizes, and in 15 designs — not all designs available in all sizes).

Promising review: "I'm obsessed with this shoe! I love that it fits like a bootie. Adorable with skinny jeans/leggings, dresses, etc. Can be dressed up or down — I wore them to a wedding in Greece, and also out and about during the day in Spain . Very comfortable for walking, dancing, whatever! " — jasmineflower

Get it from Amazon for $51.74+ (available in sizes 5–12 and seven styles — not all styles available in all sizes).

10. A chunky pair of  Fila platform sneakers  that just might be the ultimate travel hack. A comfy, supportive sneaker that also gives you a boost so you can see above the crowd and actually watch the busker's performance? Genius!

Promising review: "My new everyday sneaker. I love the design, and I love the small platform to give me height! They are so comfortable, too, I’ve worn them to the zoo walking for hours, and my feet didn't hurt . I love these shoes and am so glad I finally bought them!" — Meredith Johnstone

Get it from Amazon for $53.52+ (available in sizes 5–11.5 and six designs — not all designs available in all sizes).

11. A flexible pair of water shoes  if your itinerary's got some water-based activities. Don't let soggy feet ruin the day's fun. Wear these, and thank me later.

Promising review: "These are super comfortable. Bought a pair for every member of my family for vacation at the waterpark. Has just enough cushion to make walking all day comfortable but light enough that they were not cumbersome. Great price point, too!" — Teresa Howell

Get it from Amazon for $29.97+ (available in sizes 5.5–15 and 45 styles).

12. A beachy slip-on  with faux-laces since they give off an effortless, casual-chic kinda vibe, which will match quite nicely with your carefree, easy-going I'm-on-vacation mood.

reviewer wearing the green slip ons

P.S. These have 16,000+ 5-star ratings!

Promising review: "I purchased these prior to our family beach trip. I found out I was pregnant and needed some type of support when walking around on vacation, rather than flat flip-flops . I read the reviews for these shoes, and they were raving. I see why!! These could sell for more money but are reasonably priced. Great quality. There are no laces to tie — elastic bands. I really love these with or without socks. They are roomy but not too big width-wise. This is not a very narrow shoe. I would recommend this shoe for anyone traveling as the go-to shoe. They’re easy to get on and get off. Super stylish. " — Nicole_B

Get it from Amazon for $19.39+ (available in sizes 5–11, some wide sizes, and dozens of colors).

13. A cute and casual Sperry sneaker  you can wear with just about anything and everything in your suitcase. Plus, it comes with a removable footbed for added arch support.

reviewer's feet in the white sneakers

Promising review: " This was a great shoe for making a wedding reception comfy, and a roadtrip a little classy!! The satin finish leather was dressy enough that it complemented my olive dress, but wasn’t so fancy to be out of place walking around a ghost town in athleisure wear. I love these shoes!!" — Nick's Page

Get it from Amazon for $40.13+ (available in sizes 5–12, including wide or narrow sizes, and dozens of styles — not all styles available in all sizes).

14. A pair of   braided chunky heels  to slip on whenever you need a chic little going-out shoe, like when you're checking out that cool speakeasy you saw on TikTok. According to reviewers, these are actually comfy enough to wear all night long, too!

close up of reviewer holding the black sandal

Promising review: "Reaching for these sandals more and more because they’re comfy, cute, and elevate my outfits! They didn’t require any breaking in, and I’ve worn them for an entire day out and had no issues with long-term wear . Fit was true to size. Going to get another color since I love them so much!" — Nidhi Patel

Get it from Amazon for $29.99 (available in sizes 6–10 and 18 designs).

15. A Keen rose sandal that I just adore and almost always bring on my warm weather trips. They look so darn cute, are unbelievably comfy , and best of all, can handle miles and miles of walking (even if I decide to stroll through the waves a bit).

the sandals in black

I've brought these on hiking/camping trips, but also on city vacations, too. I love knowing I can tackle any sort of terrain I might stumble upon in my adventures even though they don't really look like your typical "hiking sandals."

Promising review: "I bought these sandals about a month before I went on vacation. I walked around in them all day in very hot temperatures (38–40 degrees Celsius) with my feet sweating and swelling and did not get any blisters or hot spots. I thought for sure they would start to smell but they didn't! I read reviews of others not liking the ankle strap not being adjustable but I did not have any issues. I definitely would not go hiking in these sandals but are great for everyday casual wear and are super cute. I love the wide-toe box for my problem feet. I will definitely be buying more pairs in different colors. These are the most comfortable sandals I have ever bought! I did have some rubbing on my big toe from the toe box material but I got used to it quickly with no issues." — Ldc8

Get it from Keen for $115 (available in sizes 5–12 and six colors).

16. A beautiful pair of Greek gladiator-inspired sandals  so you can feel like a real Mediterranean local as you navigate the streets and local seaside markets. Even if you're not headed to Greece, you'll still feel like a divine Greek Goddess wearing these.

Christina Christi makes gorgeous leather creations — from bags and shoes to jewelry — at her home in Athens, Greece! These shoes are 100% genuine leather and feature a lightweight sole, BTW.

Promising review: "Lovely and comfortable. Easy to slip on and off. Barely feel the shoe. No 'wearing in,' these are great from day one. Speedy delivery. Great follow-up with seller emailing to check sizing to make sure I received the right fit. Great small business practice and service. Thanks." — Nikkiolivia

Get it from Christina Christi on Etsy for $63.41  (originally $84.55; available in sizes 5–10.5 and three colors).

17. A pair of Swedish wooden clogs  just in case you're worried you lack the... uhhh...coordination for navigating cobblestone and brick streets in heels. Have no fear — these shoes are extra sturdy and even have a heel strap for added reinforcement. No wobbling here!

reviewer's feet in the black sandals

Promising review: "I was looking for a poolside flip-flop that was not a thong and was not super bulky. I accidentally came across these. I wore these flip-flops every day on a week-long vacation doing a lot of walking, visiting indoor and outdoor tourist attractions, and poolside, and I have to tell you my feet never hurt. They are lightweight and so very comfortable. I now have two pairs." — BFB

Get them from Amazon for $19.98+ (available in sizes 4–11 and 18 colors/styles).

19. A soft Clarks loafer  with an OrthoLite footbed you'll want to bring along for those dressier vacay events, like the fancy dinner cruise or Broadway show you booked.

reviewer photo of the burgundy loafers

Promising review: "I broke the cardinal rule and took new shoes to Europe for vacation, but I relied on the past history I've had with many Clarks I've bought in the past and wasn't disappointed. These shoes were troopers through all the cobblestone streets and climbing an ungodly amount of flights of stairs to visit castles. " — cheekymonkey

Get it from Amazon for $40.24+ (available in sizes 5–12, including wide sizes, and in 14 designs — not all designs available in all sizes).

20. A pair of quilted sneakers featuring memory foam insoles beneath that stylish exterior, because you deserve to look and feel like a million bucks when you're out and about globetrotting.

Reviewer wearing quilted black sneakers

Psst! Some reviewers say these shoes run big, and recommend ordering a size down.

Promising review: "I bought these shoes for my trip to the UK in September. They proved to be some of the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. We toured English stately homes and gardens and walked everywhere we went, and these shoes gave me great support and comfort. I wore them on the plane and in the airports, and they stood the test. Love these shoes, and I have put them aside to wear for my next UK trip!" — Louisa Cornell

Get them from Amazon for $33.98+  (available in sizes 6–11 and nine colors — not all colors available in all sizes).

a reviewer wearing black leggings and a tan pair of the open-toed slippers

Promising review: "These shoes are amazing. I have plantar fasciitis, and by the end of the day, my feet are in a lot of pain. I can now stand and walk with no pain wearing these shoes. They appear to be cheap, but whatever material these are made of is more comfortable than Crocs! I bought the grey and loved them, so I bought another pair in brown. I’m going to take them with me on vacation because I know I can walk long distances with them. My feet do not sweat in them either!" — G

Get them from Amazon for $23.98+ (available in sizes 5.5–16 and 28 colors).

22. A waterproof sneaker so you can tackle all that sightseeing, no matter what the weather forecast. These will keep your feet dry, and unlike typical rain boots, are actually comfy enough for endless walking!

Promising review : "I have three pairs of these now! They feel great. The straps are comfy. When I bought my first pair I worried the straps would make it difficult to get the shoes on and that they might be uncomfortable/cause chafing. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable they really are though!!! I alternate the colors and wear them nearly daily now — perfect summer shoes. We went on a beach vacation... We walked for hours at a time and I never once got a blister or felt any discomfort. I didn't have any issues with my feet sliding around uncomfortably when wet — whether from sweat or when it rained. They were great for walking on the beach, too!! These are seriously the best summer shoe!" — Stark
