School & Group Visits
Welcome teachers, counselors, advisers, & community organizations.
This page is intended for Washington State teachers, high school counselors, community college advisers, and community organizations with an interest in connecting their K-12 and community college students with the Allen School and learning more about the Allen School admissions process. We are excited that you are here!
On this page
The Allen School is excited to offer multiple ways for your school to engage with us! In the School Visit Opportunities section of this page, you can learn all about inviting us to your school or program or bringing students to campus! We also want to make sure that you can provide accurate and up-to-date advising to your students who may be applying to our program. The best way to learn more about the admissions pathways is by visiting our Direct-to-Major (High School Student) or Transfer Student pages. On this site, you can learn about the differences between application pathways and any recent changes to our admissions processes.
School Visit Opportunities
We are so glad that you are interested in scheduling a school visit with us! This section outlines the types of opportunities that we are currently able to offer but if you have an idea for something that is not listed, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate it if we have the capacity to do so. School visits are hosted by the Undergraduate Diversity & Access team and our mission is to attract and educate the next generation of outstanding computer scientists and computer engineers who reflect the many dimensions of diversity in Washington State. While we will accommodate as many visit requests as we can, our priority is for schools and groups that serve students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in computing. Please reach out to [email protected] with any questions!
Application at a Glance
Allen school admissions news, spring quarter 2022: a change in the prerequisite deadline.
New this year, all transfer students to the Allen School are required to have their prerequisite coursework completed by the departmental supplemental application deadline. This policy went into effect for Spring 2022 admissions. For the first two admissions cycles, we considered prerequisite exemption requests on a case-by-case basis. We will continue to have an exemption request process, however the criteria needed to gain an exemption will increase and students are strongly encouraged to wait until they are academically prepared to apply.
Autumn Quarter 2021: Computer Engineering Joins the Direct-to-Major Pathway
Effective for the freshmen class of 2021, applicants who select Computer Engineering as their first-choice major on their UW freshman application are considered for Direct to Major (DTM) admission into the Allen School instead of Direct to College (DTC) admission in the College of Engineering. Although computer engineering is an engineering degree, it is housed in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. Aligning admissions for the computer engineering and computer science majors provides greater transparency to applicants who intend to pursue either or these majors.
All freshman applicants who meet UW admissions criteria and who select Computer Science or Computer Engineering as their first-choice major on their application will be considered for DTM admission in the Allen School. The UW Office of Admissions will offer Direct to Major admission based on a holistic review that includes established criteria and selection guidelines developed in partnership with the Allen School.

Testimonials
I just wanted to thank you for putting together such a great trip for our students. The feedback from the staff was excellent and they were particularly impressed by the communication in the build-up to the trip, along with the local knowledge of the guide, the range of activities, and the clear contingency planning when the weather didn't cooperate. I am very keen that we repeat this trip next year…
Harrow School Hong Kong
Thanks for being fun, polite, and patient. We appreciated everything from bringing us on subways to public transport to ordering special food to being on time.
Brien McMahon High School
The students got the chance to experience the environment of a corporate office which gave them an idea of what working life might be like in the future. The workshops and talk by the guest speaker gave the students insights into start-up businesses and ways in which they can seek support to be entrepreneurs. The students felt really inspired by the talk given by the young entrepreneur as having a young person speak to them about success helped the students to understand that they can have confidence in themselves and their futures. The students enjoyed the workshop where they were given the opportunity to work together and share creative thoughts about start-up ideas. Thank you for organising a really insightful, educational and fun-filled trip for our students. They really enjoyed it!
Harris Girls' Academy
Thank you so much for the incredible experience, we all had an amazing time. I can't stress enough how great Katsumi was as a guide, he built a great relationship with the students and helped us feel safe and engaged throughout. Nishant was also very good when we had him for Kesenumma and he again built good relationships with the kids and his knowledge was great. Thanks again and look forward to working together again down the line!
King’s College, The British School of Panama
Health & safety were well taken care of. None of the travellers got sick because of food on the trip, and an effort was always made to ensure the cleanest available restroom. We were always advised to wear seatbelts on the bus when on the highway. The food in Shanghai was a good variety of both dishes and cuisine, and I really appreciated how much effort Caroline put into making sure our 素菜宝宝 had enough to eat.
Oak Hill School
Fantastic! Helpful, patient, passionate; an ambassador for her country - she created a great impression on the students. Very personable.
Al Yasmina Academy, Abu Dhabi
Our guides were remarkable in their care and concern. They appreciated our needs and requests as well as made the time to choose meaningful activities for us. Very well done.
Shanghai Community International School
I really enjoyed every part of The Learning Adventure as it helped me learn a lot of new interesting things and gave me an insight into business and how to make a start in it, particularly a start- up. Beginning with a short tour around Greater London informed our team about the historical context of the amazing business district and how it all started, and later on I found the start-up activity absorbing and interactive while the entrepreneur who talked to us about such things like career options helped a lot. Our guide was friendly and everything went smoothly. Thank you so much The Learning Adventure!
Student at Harris Girls' Academy
We enjoyed all the activities immensely, there was a huge range. The school we visited this time was brilliant, so well organised. The guides really tried hard to reference the aims of the trip. Peter was exceptional, he was kind and was very concerned that everyone was well and enjoying themselves. He was also very informative. The geography lecturer was exceptional and fitted the brief 110%!
Godolphin and Latymer
Thank you for making the trip such a wonderful memory.

TLA [The Learning Adventure] was great about incorporating our requests for travel and including their own recommendations. As always, a true pleasure to work with. Their attention to details is truly amazing.

About Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta, Georgia , combines the entertainment, educational, and economic opportunities of an international city with the flavor and personality of close-knit, eclectic neighborhoods.
Our Midtown neighborhood is a thriving place to create, learn, live, work, and play. The city's network of diverse neighborhoods offers a taste of home for everyone — from apartments, lofts, and high-rises to small bungalows or impressive mansions. As the state's economic and cultural hub, Atlanta is packed with attractions, small businesses, high-tech startups, and multinational corporations, along with restaurants, theaters, museums, and concert venues.
Within an easy walk to campus are green spaces and parks, including Centennial Olympic Park, Piedmont Park, and the Atlanta BeltLine — a network of public parks, multi-use trails, and multiple public transit options.
Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
Why should you care about the airport.
If you plan to travel at all during your PhD years, you should consider that ATL will make your life much easier than most other airports. ATL is relatively close to campus (14 minutes by car and 30 minutes by MARTA). ATL is the second most connected airport in the US (8th in the world). This should reduce the number of hops that you have to go through.
From ATL to Campus
Via MARTA: You may choose to use Atlanta's public transportation system, MARTA. There is a rail station located inside the airport. This service offers the quickest and most inexpensive way to get to Georgia Tech. All trains leaving the airport travel north toward Georgia Tech. The Airport Station is located near the baggage claim area at the north end of the airport. Trains leave approximately every 10 minutes. For more information about traveling to campus via MARTA click here .
Via Rideshare Services: After collecting your bags at baggage claim, you will follow signs to the rideshare pick-up lot. It is about a 5 minute walk to the designated rideshare pickup area. It is recommended to wait to order your ride, until you have arrived at the pick-up location. The Klaus Advanced Computing Building is located on Ferst Drive (266 Ferst Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30332) and the Georgia Tech Hotel is located on Spring Street (800 Spring St NW, Atlanta, GA 30308). The typical fare is approximately $35.

SAN FRANCISCO
Princeton University
School of engineering and applied science.
We strongly recommend visits when classes are in session if at all possible in order to see the campus alive with students. The best time to visit is during the junior year of high school or the fall of senior year prior to application.
Although applicants apply to Princeton University rather than to the engineering school, and all admission decisions are made by the Undergraduate Admission Office, we normally provide tours for prospective students and their immediate families and happily answer questions. A proper full-day visit to Princeton would include an engineering tour , Orange Key tour , and an Admission Office information session .

Engineering Tours
Join us for an in-person student-led tour s of the engineering school. Sign up to hear directly from a current engineering student and to ask questions. Please explore online , follow us on social media, or email questions .
Please note that our engineering tours are intended for prospective undergraduate students visiting campus individually, along with their families. Due to the large number of prospective students and family members taking our tours, as well as the narrow hallways in the Engineering Quadrangle (E-Quad), we are unfortunately not able to accommodate large organized tour groups or groups arriving by bus.
Regardless of the situation, large groups of visitors will be turned away at the door. No exceptions.
In-person Guided Engineering Tours
Guided engineering tours during the academic year are offered by members of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, who are juniors and seniors who are able to describe their experiences as engineering students at Princeton while providing an overview of the academic programs and facilities. Guides will begin the tour promptly at 11:30 a.m. from the SEAS Undergraduate Affairs Office, room C209 in the Engineering Quadrangle (E-Quad), which is K3 on the campus map . Tours last 45 minutes to an hour and are offered Monday through Friday, when classes are in session . Unfortunately, we are unable to offer guided tours on weekends, during Reading Period (just before exams) and exams, or during breaks. Here are our available tour dates . Please check back in July 2024 for our fall engineering tour schedule.
During the summer, guided engineering tours are offered after the July 4 th holiday through the end of July, given by students who are spending their summers at Princeton doing research. Guides will begin the tour promptly at 11:30 a.m. from the SEAS Undergraduate Affairs Office, room C209 in the Engineering Quadrangle (E-Quad), which is K3 on the campus map . Tours last 45 minutes to an hour and are offered weekdays only, Monday through Friday.
Here are our available tour dates . Please check back in May 2024 for our summer engineering tour schedule.
We ask that you please RSVP and follow the instructions. Helpful information, like parking on campus, is available using the tabs in the upper right. An email confirmation will be sent. Please be aware that during high school vacation weeks in February and April, as well as on holidays such as Veterans’ Day, there is a very heavy demand for guided tours. Since Princeton students have to meet academic obligations, we do not have large numbers of guides available, so the tours during peak periods can get very large. If possible, please plan to visit outside these periods.
Please note that we are unable to store personal items such as luggage, backpacks, coats or umbrellas in the E-Quad.
Self-led Engineering Tours
If you are unable to visit when a guided tour is offered, a self-led tour is available. No pre-registration is required. The leaflet describing the self-directed tour and its route can be picked up just outside the SEAS Dean’s Office suite on the main corridor of the C-wing, just next to the E-Quad Café. The self-led tour can be done at any time that the building is open, Monday through Friday, but we ask that you do not enter labs or offices unless invited by a member of the faculty or staff. Please note we are unable to store personal items such as luggage, backpacks, coats or umbrellas in the E-Quad.
Further information
Please see the list of Frequently Asked Questions by prospective and admitted students. Each engineering department has a website with information on its undergraduate program. Please visit this link , click on the departments that interest you, and follow links to the undergraduate program. Each department has an undergraduate handbook or similar advising document which will provide detailed information on its program of study and independent work, as well as video clips from current majors.
Please Note: In the event of inclement weather, should Princeton University officials announce that campus is closed to non-essential personnel, SEAS will not be offering guided engineering tours and our office will be closed for business. Please check the Princeton homepage for updates about University operations. Your safety is very important to us and we strongly encourage you to use good judgment when making your travel decision. It is better to be safe and postpone your campus visit until you can see Princeton under much more auspicious conditions.
If you continue to have questions about the engineering program at Princeton, please email [email protected] . All questions about the application process, including standardized tests, and admission matters should be directed to the Undergraduate Admission Office, [email protected] . Nhulunbuy dance school bound for the United States for whirlwind tour
She lives hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest capital city, but 12-year-old Katy Pelns dreams of performing on Broadway in the city that never sleeps.
"I watch 'Hamilton' a lot and it just looks so cool – with all of like the dancers, the music, the singing," she explains.
"I know all [the songs] off by heart."
For a long time, living in the remote north-east Arnhem Land mining town of Nhulunbuy, 650 kilometres east of Darwin, made Katy's passion to dance feel out of reach.
But since May last year she's been preparing to embark on a whirlwind tour with 19 other Nhulunbuy locals, performing at Disneyland and Universal Studios, then aboard a cruise to Mexico.
The trip is a first for the Arafura Dance Association, which usually struggles even to make the trek to Darwin for competitions.
The dance school's board president Taygan Tucker says since a series of layoffs at the town's major mine were proposed last month, several families have pulled out of the trip.
"We've had families who were very interested and keen to attend but just couldn't commit because they didn't know if they would have jobs here at the end of the year," Ms Tucker said.
But the Arafura Dance Association is determined to help level the playing field for its remote dancers and they're doing their best to bring down the cost in any way they can.
From Arnhem Land to Disneyland
The trip was the brainchild of principal dance teacher Geneva Kulper, a 25-year-old Sydneysider who migrated to the red dirt roads of Arnhem Land nearly three years ago.
"Just being remote, some of the opportunities are already so limited."
"I just know this is going to be such a great experience for them and open their eyes up to the wider world a bit more and what other dance opportunities are out there."
The dance school's board embraced the idea with open arms, but Ms Tucker admits that as the bills rolled in they realised it would be a lot harder than they first thought.
"We're looking at over $200,000 just to get these students safely to the US, pay for their airfares, accommodation and also to ensure they're participating in workshops and dances."
While Ms Tucker searches for grants and sponsorships to support the trip, all the students and their families are chipping in each weekend.
They hope car washes, sausage sizzles and bake sales will help them to raise enough money to bring down the costs to allow families to take part.
"It's a lot of hard work, but that's the thing with dance: you've got to put in the hard work to be rewarded," hip-hop dancer Tyce Smith, 13, explains.
Opportunities to perform limited in isolated town
Student dance teacher Tarni Petre, 14, believes dance is a vital part of the social fabric for many girls in Nhulunbuy.
"You can go out camping and stuff like that but it's hard to get people to take you out there," she said.
"We sometimes come up to the dance studio on our days off."
And while camping, fishing and motorcross remain popular, for Tyce nothing matches the feeling of being on stage.
"I get a bit shy in front of people – but when I'm up on stage it just gives me a boost," he said.
The other attraction is that for many of the performers it would mean going overseas for the first time.
"There's a place [at Disneyland] called bippity boppity bouquet and you get to like turn into a princess," Katy says.
Ms Kulper hopes to give the students a taste of her experience growing up in the city.
"Looking back on my childhood, the main thing I think of is dance," she recalls.
"My life wouldn't be anything without dance and I feel that a lot of the kids here feel the same way – so it's really inspiring to be passing that on."

2024 Masters odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from same golf model that's called 10 majors
Sportsline's proven model simulated the masters 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for augusta national.
Rory McIlroy has been chasing a career grand slam since winning the 2014 Open Championship. He'll make his 10th attempt to become the fifth player in history to accomplish the feat at the 2024 Masters starting Thursday. The first major championship of the season takes place at Augusta National Golf Club and will mark the 88th Masters. McIlroy has managed seven top-10 finishes in his last 10 trips to Augusta, but he hasn't finished better than 19th in a PGA Tour event this season.
The 34-year-old is a 24-time PGA Tour winner and priced at 10-1 in the 2024 Masters odds. Scottie Scheffler has been the No. 1 player in the world for the last 46 weeks and is the 5-1 favorite in the 2024 Masters futures. Defending champion Jon Rahm is 13-1 as he looks to become the first player to defend his title since Tiger Woods (160-1) in 2002. Before locking in any 2024 Masters picks of your own, be sure to see the 2024 Masters golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament. McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000. The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022. In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the Masters 2024 field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 Masters predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the co-favorites, fails to complete the career grand slam and barely cracks the top five at Augusta National. The world's No. 2-ranked golfer is off to a rough start in 2024, with his highest finish through his first five starts being 19th at the Players Championship.
Putting was an issue for McIlroy at the start of the season, as he previously ranked 129th in that area (-0.246). While he has improved to 83rd on the PGA Tour (0.036) and his total shots gained (0.610) is 40th, he is still 123rd in shots gained approaching the green (-0.176). While there appears to be small improvements in his game, his finishes this season are why the model is low on him.
Another surprise: Brooks Koepka, a 21-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The five-time major champion has two runner-up finishes at Augusta in the last five years, but he's also missed the cut twice.

Future of education in Worcester: A look inside the new Doherty High School
WORCESTER ― The first day of school at the new Doherty Memorial High School gets closer by the day. The construction began in 2021, and the school opens this fall for the 2024-25 school year.
On Friday, Mayor Joseph Petty and Superintendent Rachel Monárrez hosted a tour of the new $316 million high school.
More: School project: Roam the halls of Worcester's under-construction Doherty High (by drone)
The new school is 420,000 square feet, designed for an enrollment of 1,670 students.
"We're trying to keep families in the city. We don't want to lose people," Petty said. "We have to compete with surrounding towns' high schools."
New, improved spaces for learning
While it is still in its final phase of construction, the school's interior features a new auditorium and rooms specifically designed for Doherty's Chapter 74 programs, including construction craft labor, robotics, engineering and 3D printing.
"Basically, (students) can go to any of these shops and create whatever it is they need to for class," said Christina Bazelmans, associate principal at the architecture firm Lamoureux Pagano Associates. "They're all interconnected, so you can go in between each of them and create one project using all of these different engineering traits."
The school theater will seat around 800 students, about half the student population.
Along with the theater are rooms like the black box theater, which will be used to teach students about stage lighting.
Bazelmans said the new school gives students 21st-century learning models.
"It provides more technology, more flexibility and more space," Bazelmans said. "They're expanding the engineering and technology program, which brings more opportunities for technical education for students, which is awesome. Worcester Technical has a huge waitlist, which is awesome, but we obviously need to get that type of education to more kids."
Every classroom at Doherty has chilled beam cabinets, which provide cooling using induced airflow without the noise of a typical HVAC system. Each classroom also has "speech reinforcement," a speaker on the ceilings that allows teachers using a microphone to communicate with students.
"This allows teachers to use their normal voice to get students' attention. It pipes their voice through that speaker and everybody in the class can hear it," Bazelmans said.
Petty said the new amenities in the high school allow for more learning opportunities for students.
"I think it'll have a pretty big impact on students," Petty said. "It's a great project. I'm proud, and the superintendent is proud of this building."

MDE Announces 14 School Districts Receiving Over 3 million in Grants
April 04, 2024
Partners from Communities In Schools will provide additional support to children to improve learning outcomes
LANSING – Fourteen Michigan school districts are receiving more than $3.2 million in grants from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to connect students and families with supportive adults and wrap-around community resources.
Students in the schools will benefit from an MDE partnership with Communities In Schools of Michigan , Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo , and Communities in Schools of Northwest Michigan .
“I applaud these 14 school districts from all across Michigan,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Their efforts and our partnership with Communities In Schools mean children in participating school districts will experience improved outcomes. With support in reading, math, and other areas, students will be better positioned to graduate from high school and achieve their life dreams.”
The grants will fund placing full-time student support coordinators in schools, among other initiatives.
The school districts earning competitive grants are:
- Battle Creek Public Schools, $226,540.
- Benton Harbor Area Schools, $373,984.
- Central Lake Public Schools, $49,162.
- Dearborn City School District, $1,766,012.
- East Jordan Public Schools, $70,376.
- Ellsworth Community School, $37,316.
- Ferndale Public Schools, $136,400.
- Kalamazoo Public Schools, $114,724.
- Kalkaska Public Schools, $49,940.
- Madison District Public Schools, $48,060.
- Mancelona Public Schools, $63,090.
- Marshall Public Schools, $75,750.
- Vanderbilt Area Schools, $47,041.
- Ypsilanti Community Schools, $181,650.
“This grant is yet another testament that MDE and Benton Harbor Area Schools are collaboratively, aggressively, and intentionally putting additional layers and effort into improving student literacy – as well as student achievement in math and other subjects,” said Dr. Kelvin Butts, superintendent of Benton Harbor Area Schools. “Benton Harbor Area Schools is working diligently to ensure that every student has an equitable opportunity to receive the same level of attention and service while focusing on the whole child and family as we continue to move forward. This initiative will empower our students and educators, fostering environments where learning and growth thrive.”
The grant aligns with Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan Goal 2, to improve early literacy achievement, and Goal 5, to increase the percentage of all students who graduate from high school.
“Children win when adults work together to improve schools,” said State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “Thanks to Communities In Schools at the national, state, and local levels; our local school district leaders; the Ballmer Group; and MDE for their partnership.”
Communities In Schools places full-time student support coordinators in each partner school building to connect students and families with supportive adults and community resources. The staff focus on wrap-around supports targeting academic achievement, learning loss, absenteeism, and graduation rates. By empowering students, Communities In Schools helps provide a more equitable learning environment for all learners.
"Communities In Schools extends heartfelt gratitude to the Michigan Department of Education for this grant. It is an investment in schools that directly impacts students and shapes our collective future," said Communities In Schools National President and CEO Rey Saldaña. "Together, we can provide students with the resources and supports they need to succeed in and out of the classroom."
Communities In Schools has received funding from the Ballmer Group for its efforts to provide support to public schools around the United States – including in Michigan. Ballmer Group provides funding to reshape opportunity and expand economic mobility across the United States.
“This partnership between MDE and the Communities In Schools affiliates in Michigan is a perfect example of how the nonprofit and public sector can come together to support Michigan's students,” said Mallory DePrekel, CEO of Communities In Schools Michigan. “We are honored to expand our supports to students in so many districts across Michigan and look forward to continue providing the evidence-based Integrated Student Supports model to thousands more students in the next three years."
MDE and Communities In Schools affiliates in Michigan worked together to bring schools this unique three-year grant opportunity in support of students and schools. MDE is providing start-up funding from American Rescue Plan, Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief administrative funds. Communities In Schools affiliates are providing matching funds. Some local district contributions are also needed.
