From Bangalore to Coorg by Car – Rendezvous Through Wild Karnatak a

I won’t tell you that Coorg is the Scotland of India, as every other Bangalore to Coorg travel guide must have already said this to you. I have not been to Scotland and don’t know its landscape. But I can say that Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is straight out of that movie in which fat cows graze on a grassy carpet while spinach-green hills pose in the background.

I’m not sure if I can call Coorg a quaint town. Everybody  traveling in Karnataka  go on a road trip from Bangalore to Coorg, at least once. I’ve been to Coorg so many times I now have a list of 15 stunning and secluded coffee estates, home stays, and  hotels in Coorg .

A humble request: We overcrowd Venice, Paris, Coorg, Florence, Bangkok as if there is nowhere else to go. Meanwhile, the ecologies of these places suffer due to overcrowding and lack of care, obvious when tourists throng the destination. Let’s try to distribute ourselves through the lesser visited places which all hold, if not more, the similar richness of people, food, landscape, and history.

May I suggest Stuart hill in Coorg instead of Madikeri town, Mandi district instead of Manali , Kalga instead of Kasol , and Chile instead of London and Paris? But let us promise to respect these new places and not turn them into just hangouts to chill. Let’s chill in our backyards. But when we visit, let’s visit to see, know, and understand something unknown to us.

What makes us travel to Coorg, a district nestled in the western ghats of South Karnataka?

Rolling emerald hills, an opportunity to see elephants, leopards, gaurs, giant Malabar squirrels, peppy birds of Karnataka, aromatic coffee and tea estates, huge avocados, rich Kodava cuisine, silky waterfalls melting into the revered Kaveri, old temples, and ancient monasteries could be some of the reasons.

Millennials who work a 9-5 or rather a 9-9 like to run away from the maddening rush of Bangalore city to a natural setting in  wild Karnataka . Sometimes their parents visit giving the youngsters another reason to drive to the many green and historical places to visit near Bangalore. Old Bangaloreans head out of the cosmopolitan state to find something more authentic.

And what could be more authentic than Coorg, a place which had been home to the  Kodavas , the ethnic warriors, for centuries? Just a five-six hours drive from Bangalore, Coorg offers the much-needed natural respite, too. (If you are looking for places to visit near Bangalore, travel to Hampi . And when in Hampi, do visit the Daroji bear sanctuary . )

I can testify the relief part for  during my corporate days  I also rushed from Bengaluru to Coorg on one  soul-finding  weekend. A kind homestay, rich Coorgi food, monsoon pouring over the balcony, perfumed coconut trees standing like a wallpaper,  Rabindra Nath’s Gora  in hand, and a cup of steaming Coorgi coffee rejuvenated me.

Now years later, when I returned to Bangalore from a  long South-America trip , nostalgia took over. I imagined myself sitting in the same balcony while clouds dripped and coffee and Tagore became my best friends again.

In those weak moments, I thought of revisiting the disconnected green hamlet of Coorg. Don’t worry when I say disconnected, for Coorg still receives phone signals and internet. But in Coorg nature is closer to you than anything else.

From Bangalore to Coorg by Road

Though I mostly  travel alone , I do have some occasional adventures with my friends, some of who love road trips. We decided to visit Coorg by road from Bangalore. We booked a Drivezy Swift.

The night before the Coorg trip, I had found that homestay on Booking. I couldn’t resist the tall coconuts, fat palm trees, and dense betel nuts of the homestay and booked immediately.

Update 2022 – About the road condition from Bangalore to Coorg : We took the Mysore route. So NH 275. Distance from Bangalore to Coorg via Mysore road is 248 km.

The route goes from Bangalore -> Bidadi -> Ramanagara (Ramdevara Betta Vulture Sanctuary, Kanva Reservoir, and Janapada Loka open-air museum) -> Channapatna (wooden toys) -> Mandya -> Srirangapatna (Tipu Sultan’s palace and burial ground) -> Mysore (bypassed, Rangnathittu Bird Sanctuary ) -> Hunsur -> Bylakuppe (Namdroling monastery) -> Kushal Nagar (Dubare Elephant Camp) -> Madikeri .

The highway is pretty well-maintained. While leaving Bangalore the state highway is four-lane. After Mysore the highway becomes two-lane. This later part of the highway is undivided and needs more attention. But the roads overall were good. The journey was smooth until a little outside Madikeri where the roads get more curvy and mountainous. You enter the Ghats after all.

The journey from Bengaluru to Coorg via NH75 is 275 km. We haven’t taken that route many times. But it is said to be a simpler one.

road trip from bangalore to coorg

I’ve noted the important places in and around every stop above in the route. At the time of the Coorg trip, I didn’t know about the Ramdevara Betta Vulture Sanctuary otherwise I would have gone there. We had been to the Rangnathittu Bird Sanctuary before. While driving from Coorg to Bengaluru, we stopped at the Dubare elephant camp but the camp was closed due to heavy rain the previous day.

So on Bangalore to Coorg road the next day, we only stopped at the Namdroling monastery in the Bylakuppe village. Namdroling is said to be the biggest Tibetan settlement in South India. We freely walked in the monastery. It houses about three thousand monks and has a gorgeous Golden temple.

religious+procession+road+from+bangalore+to+coorg

A Hindu religious procession was going outside the monastery, but life was peaceful inside  Namdroling . The gompa is huge and we got lost a few times. The kind monks always showed us the way. Two monks, huddled under an umbrella, warned us to walk carefully. The floor was left slippery by the unabashed rains that had been soaking us since we left Bangalore. After all, we were in June, a month that witnesses much mercy of the rain magicians in Karnataka.

A Buddhist tried to pray in the temple while loud tourists posed and clicked countless selfies in the temple. But their chatter didn’t discourage me from deciding to return to the monastery to stay there for a night. (Monastery allows visitors to stay. Make a booking beforehand.)

By the time we got to the highway, the sun had started to set. We had set on our road trip to Coorg around lunch and had made many stops. Soon we were driving on a dark and silent road.

Cars passed by infrequently. Roads were fringed by tall white-skinned Eucalyptus. Gulmohar trees and their creepers stared at us. Tiny thatched huts dotted the agricultural fields that spread from the road to the villages.

On that quiet forest road, I could only hear the stir of the crickets.

We thought we were lost. The dying phone signals in the rain-soaked Coorgi forest made our stomachs churn. We somehow connected to our homestay and requested them to guide us. When the host arrived in his SUV, one of my friends asked him to follow us. Everyone laughed.

The jungle was pitch dark. The road narrowed further as we drove behind the SUV.

After an adventurous drive, we were finally on the guest house’s rooftop digging into mango curry with soft rice and sour rasam. Our drive from Bangalore to Madikeri took us about seven hours, including a stop for lunch and Namdroling monastery.

Trip to Coorg – Our Homestay in Coorg and Coorgy Culture

When I went on a second trip to Coorg from Bangalore by road, much hadn’t changed.

I stayed with a family of Kodavas who ran a homestay within a giant coffee estate. But unlike the previous family, this one gave away far more glimpses of being Kshatriyas (a Hindu class for warriors).

One night our host served us fresh Coorgi curries and basmati rice. But I saw that while descending downstairs from our terrace homestay, he latched us from the outside. The homestay was on the first floor, and the family lived on the ground floor.

The next morning I asked the host about locking us. He said just for safety. I don’t know why but I recalled the story he had told earlier about the villagers getting together to hunt a wild pig.

Would the pigs climb up to our room? I wished not for I always slept with the windows and doors open to soak in the last silver light of the moon and the first golden rays of the sun.

I would have definitely ended up in the audacious pig’s stomach.

The tall, mustached guy walked away without providing me a satisfactory answer. But I got a good hint that the man belonged to the generations of an ancient native tribe of Kodavas, meaning indigenous people, who now do agriculture but were known as warriors.

Less than two lacks in number, Kodavas, who have inhabited Coorg for a long time, have stories of being Alexander the Great’s descendants. Another legend says the Coorg district got inhabited by a broad-headed race in the Mohanjodaro period.

Warriors or not, Kodavas live differently than the rest of the Karnataka communities. Due to their unique lifestyle and culture, the Kodava community has been exempted from getting a license to purchase firearms. Though this  exemption is under review now , I wonder if the need for a license will stop the Coorgi people from hunting wild animals. ( Update 2022:   High Court has recently upheld  the constitutional validity of exemption to Kodavas until 2029.)

I don’t want to be the judge of an ethical situation here. But who is right? The stout pig who walks into people’s estate by mistake or the locals who have been thinking of the pig as food since medieval times? Also, hunting is as much part of some cultures as is wearing a sari. We want to protect ourselves from wild animals, but how do we justify getting into the wild to hunt them when they didn’t so much so look in our direction? (a little more on this in the comment section.)

Kodavas are a mystery to most outsiders. And not many people research or read about them when they plan a Coorg trip. At least, I didn’t. ( Kodava history and its people have been described well by Travel Earth in this article. I also list books at the end of the blog for those who want to know this ancient culture more deeply.)

With windows wide open, we fell asleep to the sound of the rain rattling against the thatched roof. Only in a few hours, slightly before dawn, we were woken up by chattery green-blue Malabar parrots.

The flying foxes shrieked. Insects buzzed. Cicadas bustled like wheels of a train rattle against the tracks. A loud stream gushing somewhere close led the chorus.

The sky was like a game of chess with black and white clouds making their moves. The monsoon foliage hung like a painting. Betel nuts stood tall. Plants glistened with dew. A hungry orange squirrel scurried around.

The house dog had already been fed. When the grandmother of the house came outside, he squealed, barked, and made a patronizing sound.

coffee+estate+madikeri+kodagu+karnataka+state

Waking up in a home surrounded by a forest was an amazing experience.

We couldn’t see the coffee estate in the night as it had already sunk into darkness. So soon we walked into the estate.

The walk was full of surprises.

Coconuts, betel nuts, and palm were supplemented by papaya, guava, mango, and banana plants. Yellow, pink, and red roses, dahlia, germaniums, and jasmine smiled brightly. Passion fruits hung like perfect balls. Red and ripe coffee beans adorned coffee plants. The green peppercorns hung on the pepper creepers, like a bunch of grapes.

We got lost and ended up on another farm. The owner softened after hearing our pleas and showed us an old tree on his farm. The tree with its sinuous branches was not less than a celebrity, and I could feed the tree’s grandeur in the air.

(We could have also easily got lost in the Sharavathi Valley in Karnataka, if not for the guide who was taking us to the remote Silver Water falls there.)

estate+kodava+coorg+karnataka

Leaving the grand tree alone, we went for lunch to a Coorgi home-run restaurant in Madikeri. I was a non-vegetarian then, and we devoured our pork and chicken curries with our fingers.

If you go to this restaurant, do try their leechi custard. It could be your rainbow on a dark day.

tigertiger+restaurant+madikeri+coorg+food+kodava+cuisine+karnataka

After the heavy meal, we had the frothy Coorgi coffee. The coffee must have awoken us because drinking it we went to Raja’s seat — a popular place to visit in Coorg. But the top of that hill was just an excuse to go further into the jungle that lay beyond the tourist spot.

What happens in the jungle stays in the jungle.

coffee+estate+kodagu+madikeri+coorg+karnataka

After our forest adventure, we drove to Abbey falls. The traffic, the honking, unaware people standing in the middle of the road like zen cows,  Indian men who stared  — the scenery changed. I shrieked when a lady honked hard and that was the most exciting part of the waterfall trip.

Abbey falls is beautiful but make sure you go on a weekday or early in the day to avoid the crowd.

Eating Maggie and drinking chai with the velvety mountains in front did make up for some of the heart-wrenching honks. And remnants of that anxiety I get from visiting a crowded place flew away with the clouds swimming above the mountains.

We sped up on the silent road back to our Coorg homestay. This time we knew the way.

The next morning we drove from Coorg to Bangalore. But I knew I would travel to Coorg again to see the rest of the mysterious district.

Until next time.

Update 2022: Of course, I have been to the district of Coorg many times since then. Resharing this piece on living in Stuart Hill in Coorg and a photo essay from the same hill .

October to March is the best time to plan a trip to Coorg. From June to September, Coorg receives heavy rainfall making it difficult to walk or hike around.

Though I visited Coorg both times during the monsoon, I don’t regret traveling to Coorg in the rain. Coorg is gorgeous during rainfall. But I couldn’t hike to many places near Coorg due to the rain.

How much time do you need for a Bangalore to Coorg road trip?

Depends on you. You can spend a weekend or a month in Coorg.

To give you an idea, a one-day Coorg trip from Bangalore by car or otherwise would be too hectic. Even a 2 days Bangalore to Coorg trip sounds rushed.

At least half a day is required to reach Coorg from Bangalore by car. Vice-versa, too. So only on a three-day trip to Coorg, some of the nice places in Coorg can be visited.

If you can, stay in Coorg for a longer time. Then you can not only relax and explore Coorg at your pace, you can understand the culture of Kodavas too.

homestay+madikeri+coorg+karnataka+india

Is Coorg and Madikeri same?

Madikeri is a town within the district of Coorg. Coorg is also known as Kodagu.

Distance to Coorg from Bangalore is 250 km via NH275 or Mysore Road. Via NH75 Bengaluru-Coorg is 275 km.

Over the years we have taken both the routes to Coorg, NH275 and NH75, and have enjoyed the journey.

How to go from Bengaluru to Coorg?

The best way to travel from Bangalore to Coorg is by road — either by self-driving, getting a taxi, or bus.

Self-Drive to Coorg

Bangalore to Coorg roads are well-maintained. The drive takes about five-six hours ( depending on your speed and stops).

The distance between Bangalore and Coorg doesn’t feel much especially if you stop at the Namdroling monastery on your way to Coorg and at Dubare camp on the way back (and maybe other places).

Start your journey early. Bangalore to Coorg drive is fringed by forest on both sides. So carry an aux cable, as sometimes the car bluetooth doesn’t work, and tune into some good music.

Bus to Coorg

You can take a private or a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus from Bangalore to Kodagu. It takes around six hours to reach Coorg by bus. Check the bus schedule here on  Redbus .

Taxi to Coorg

When I had just arrived in Bangalore we used to book taxis with private car operators. But now an outstation Ola or Uber can be easily booked as well.

For people who love to drive, the best way to reach Coorg by far is by driving on the smooth Karnataka roads.

Choose one of the stay options on  Booking , my favorite platform for searching guest houses in India. I have also searched through many Booking.com properties and have prepared a list of  home stays and hotels in Coorg  that are secluded and nestled in nature. They all have good hosts and good reviews. The article also has some beautiful coffee estates. Go through the list and see if you like something.

I suggest you stay in a homestay to get the best experience of the native Kodava life. The natives would also help you explore Coorg the local way.

Tip to commute within Coorg: If you are going to Coorg by car, you can drive around to explore Coorg. But if you are going by bus, ask your guesthouse about the commute options. Maybe you can rent a car there or they can arrange one for you.

You can also bike or get dropped at a place and hike in the area.

flowers+homestay+madikeri+coorg+karnataka

Buy Robusta or Arabica coffee from your homestay owner as Coorg is one of the highest producers of coffee in India. Now that we have got the coffee covered, let us move on to other activities.

Here are some of the best places to visit in Coorg.

Brahmagiri peak — A great place for hiking.

Tadiandamol — The highest peak in Coorg. The trek is long, so please prepare accordingly. You can also camp at the top of the peak.

Barapole River — For river rafting.

Abbey Falls — Gorgeous falls but comes with large crowds.

Harangi Dam — This dam is about 36 km away from Madikeri. It was the first dam to be built on Cauvery.

Nagarhole National Park — Best chances to see wildlife in Coorg.

Talakaveri wildlife sanctuary near Coorg — Talakaveri means the origin of the Cauvery river. Beautiful sanctuary for seeing wildlife and walking around in nature.

Dubare Reserve Forest & Elephant Camp —Stop over Dubare while coming back from Coorg to Banglore. When I went there, the camp was closed because of the high flow of the river (in which the elephants bath). Hope you have better luck.

Cauvery Nisargadhama — An island on the river Kaveri. Walk to this island by crossing a hanging rope bridge.

Chettalli — A small village near Madikeri. This is where the popular Cherala Bhagavathy Temple is located.

Madikeri Fort — Built in the 17th century. Along exists a Tipu Sultan museum.

Omkareshwara Temple — In Madikeri. Ask the locals for the story of this temple.

Padi Igguthappa temple — A revered temple close to the Tadiandamol peak.

If you love to visit green places, travel to  Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh , or  another gem of Himachal Parvati valley  for some peaceful time in the Himalayas.

Another culturally intriguing place in India is  Spiti Valley near Manali.  If you are a culturally curious traveler, you would like Spiti.

namdroling+monastery+bangalore+coorg+karnataka

Kodava or Coorgi cuisine is made with a lot of local spices, coconuts, curry leaves, and kokum. Most of the Coorgi people make their food with local ingredients and organic farm-grown products.

Kodavas eat a lot of meat, mainly pork and chicken. But as I’m a vegetarian, I won’t write about those dishes. Some of the famous vegetarian Coorg dishes are Baimbale fry or stir fry bamboo shoots, Kaad Mange— a sweet and tangy mango curry, Thaliya Puttu — a steamed rice coconut cake, Koovale Puttu – steamed jackfruit cake, Atti Payasa — a sweet made with coconut.

I was so confused by the various rice preparations Coorgi cuisine offers I thought to write them here.

Kadambuttu or kadubu are rice dumplings made with broken rice. Nooputtu is a smooth lump of compact rice noodles. Paaputtu is rice, coconut milk, and grated coconut steamed together to make rice cakes. Akki rotti is flat rice bread.

The best way to enjoy Kodagu cuisine is to try it at your homestay.

One of the amazing restaurants to try Coorg cuisine is Tiger tiger restaurant in Madikeri town.

If you want to learn the Kodagu cuisine , I recommend reading The Reluctant Cookbook: A Unique Selection Of Sumptuous Indian Recipes And Authentic Tastes Of Coorg by Hansa Ashok. This blog called Coorg Recipes is also authentic and delicious.

And of course, the ubiquitous South Indian dosa was everywhere, too.

This is on my bucket list, I love Karnataka, especially western ghats.

Hi Priyanka

Four of us are planning to take this route in late September or early October: Bangalore –> Mysore 2N –> Kabini 2N –> Coorg (Virajpet) 3N and then back to BLR airport to fly back to Kolkata. Is there any nice place between Coorg and BLR where we can break journey and stay overnight?

Try Dubare elephant camp.

Coorg is an excellent place to visit any time of the year. I visit often excluding the covid period. Recently I found that local traffic police is harrassing tourist unnecessarily for no reason and charging a lot of fine. I was talking on the phone while in the parking lot in front of police station only. When i drove from there, in thr next light, the cop said that he got a msg on the radio and he doesn’t what to do. He made us wait for 15 min so that the same patrolling van would come , and also 3 traffic vans went by while we were waiting. It felt like a gang together lying about the phone and harrassing. Since tourists are almost in a hurry always, they threatened to lock the car, etc even i was with|a 6 months old baby. Threatened us as well. It was extremely bad situation, but unfortunately i was not talking on the cell phone while driving. Also the cop told me once you pay the fine, take the receipt, then you can park anywhere, drive anywhere, etc. Anyway, very sad experience.

I’m very sad to hear this, Sunil. This definitely sounds like a harrowing experience, one we don’t want to find ourselves in. Hope you are feeling better now.

Though not in Coorg, many times police have harassed us, too. Especially while crossing state borders, leaving big cities such as Mumbai, and while driving at night in any place (not late night but even at 10-11 pm). They just stop us, harass for the masks- even though no one around us would be wearing them and we would still have ours partially on, and want to check the trunk and bags without any clarification whatsoever.

After covid, the police seem to believe they can harass anyone with a car, especially people who are visiting from outside. Mask is the most easy excuse to put random charges.

The common man (without a politician’s sticker) has no power in India. Sorry about your experience again.

You have not met the right person to show the core of coorg. If you really wanna know why Coorg is know as Scotland of India. Contact @travelincoorg

I hope you edit you blog once we show the real Scotland of India Coorg

Om & Namaste Priyanka, I truly enjoyed and got value from your ideas, suggestions and perceptions! Thanks. My primary purpose to visit Coorg was being close proximity to The Tibetan Community, however, from your article I now perceive the value of staying and adventuring Coorg. Thanks. (I’ll being in India for 5.5 months, from California). Maybe you can make some suggestions: I’m into photography “Birds and Wildlife” and Nature/landscapes, the spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, of course COFFEE and good healthy food. I’ll be three nights in Coorg. Yet, I want to avoid crowds. I’ll be in Coorg in early November 2022…… Appreciate the input… Namaskar… jk

Dear Priyanka

We are a senior citizen couple ( 65 and 74 years old) , planning to drive down to Coorg in the first week of May. We have booked a homestay for a weeks stay . Which one of the two routes would you recommend to get to the Homestay ? Also considering our age and our desire to take it quite easy , what would you suggest we do on a typical day throughout the week?

Dear Sridhar,

Thanks for writing to me. I suggest the Mysore route. The roads are good that side and that’s the main route I have taken over the years. I’ve written about the road conditions in the article too. Please have a look.

On a typical day you can choose your own itinerary. For people who love to walk or hike, you can just head out in and around your homestay. If the guesthouse is in an estate, you will have plenty of space there itself. If not, all of Coorg is mostly forest and offers plenty of space to stroll and just be. Coorg Museum could be on your one day itinerary, there is a fort also, you can take a coffee plantation tour too, perhaps local cooking class (a short one), there are waterfalls, Raja’s seat for beautiful views (but there are many more places with views too), and so on. Coorgy culture is pretty old and misunderstood so if you are interested in knowing more, do ask your hosts about their life there.

Hope this helps. Thanks for writing to me. Priyanka

Many thanks!

I love your blog very interesting. I am going to Karnataka in July I am very scared, but excited at the same time. If you can please let me know where are the good hotels as I am going from USA I want commodity. I want to enjoy the culture and the religion, but I want to have my comfort too.

Have a good trip. Priyanka

Fly High Priyanka, awesome canvas

You are Welcome.

Well written article..liked how you avoided those overused phrases like Scotland of India etc. being from that place I’m tired of hearing those..it has its own identity. On usage of guns, hunting etc we have our own reasons as many of us still live in remote places and there is no forest officials to save you from wild animals or police to safeguard if anything wrong happens during odd hours..we take care of ourselves hence exemption is granted and continued for a long time.. however guns have become symbolic now for many where it only comes out during festivals or rituals for most of us..some people with vested interest are unhappy with this for reasons which is not convincing or debate worthy according to me. However the court has ruled in favour of exemption recently.

Thank you for stopping by. I have written about various aspects of Coorg in many articles on my blog. But I’m yet to learn so much more. I think I will have to practice a little bit of Kannada to know more about not only Coorg but Karnataka, a state I have come to love.

I understand the usage of guns. I also understand how over the years guns have become symbolic for most people and they are only kept in rituals. Like on Dussehra some families keep weapons in the pooja all around India.

But the story I’ve mentioned above was different. The hosts had told us when they hear wild pigs in the estate at night they make sure to go out with neighboring men. In this case I argue the hunting: as far as I know the wild pig would feed itself in the estate and won’t come to the house. Animals also don’t like to run into humans. So is the killing justified for protection or it is just for the sake of hunting or perhaps to eat? No one can debate the vegetation damage in the estate by the pigs. Again, animals have to eat somewhere. Even then I understand that old cultures have hunting so ingrained in their systems that to them nothing seems wrong with it. And who is to call them wrong? We all know people who eat all kinds of meat call themselves animal lovers.

There are so many debates.

I appreciate you stopping by to let me know a little bit more about your gorgeous home 🙂

Is it safe to travel from Mysore and how are the self drive conditions. How is the road to Coorg now if you would have been there recently.

Should be safe from Mysore. Self-drive conditions in Karnataka are good as the roads and highways are well-built. I haven’t been to Coorg in a year, but I have been on the road towards that side and it was good. Do a generic Google search once, but I don’t think anything has changed. Let me know how it goes 🙂

I went to coord in Dec. such a shitty place and such a shitty route from bangalore to coorg. I got misled by such articles. Dont regret later.

what is home stay contact number

I am sorry but I don’t have that homestay’s contact number. Maybe try one of these places – https://www.onmycanvas.com/isolated-hotels-madikeri-coorg-karnataka/

Hey, very well written article! Do you have any recommendations as to which route to choose between NH 75 and Mysore Road? Any disadvantages on either side?

Hey, I don’t remember the route we took. But choose the one with Namdroling monastery on it.

Okay thanks!

Wonderful narrative. Will reach out to you for more information on your homestays ( Coorg, Udipi etc) around Karnataka and other states…will stay connected and look forward to more writings from you.

hampi is the best place to visit, i have seen a lot about hampi in youtube and other sites. i want to travel once..

Thanks for writing informative blog on Coorg. We are also planning to visit Coorg this week. Just want to know whether it’s easy to drive from Bangalore to Coorg? Like, is there hair pin curves or narrow road is there which make us think twice before going by our own car?

Hey, thanks for reading. I don’t remember about the hairpin bends. But given which estate or hotel you are going to, there could be bends or muddy narrow roads. Just ask the property once and they would be able to tell you. Let me know how it goes. Enjoy your vacations.

Thanks for your reply. Any specific recommendation to buy spices?

Wherever you stay, they will have pepper. So that’s sorted. Ask them for some and pay. For other kind of stuff, ask your homestay or estate itself. Some shops are there in the town but not all are good. Depends on what all spices you want.

Nice Information! You described all things about Karnataka very nicely. All the places are fabulous. Also the photos are awesome.

Top places to visit in Coorg in one day

Looking for the top places to visit in Coorg in one day? Coorg or Kodagu district in Karnataka is well known for it’s beautiful landscapes, dense reserve forests, waterfalls and wildlife. Although, during our stay in South India, we have visited several weekend getaways and beautiful destinations over the weekend like exploring the ancient ruins in Hampi , spending a relaxing weekend in Ooty during the monsoons season , visiting Kodaikanal end of the year ,  exploring beautiful temples, museums and other interesting  places to see in Mahabalipuram , our 2 days trip to Pondicherry , a day trip to Mysore , a beautiful trip to Munnar , a houseboat stay in the backwaters of Alleppey and many more . However, a visit to Coorg was still awaited. Finally we did a road trip to Coorg in early 2017 – which is going to get into our list of best road trips to take in India . And we found many interesting places to see in Coorg. Here’s the list of our favorites. Although due to crunch of time we had to skip a few of these, still the overall experience was awesome.

Table of Contents

Golden Temple Monastery

This is the first of our top places to visit in Coorg in one day. Because, it is the first stop on way from Bangalore to Coorg. Moreover, Golden Temple Monastery is actually a beautiful Monastery to visit on your way to Madikeri, Karnataka. Actually, there is almost a mini Tibet setup in this region. With different Monasteries, schools, medical establishment, shops and everything else that you will expect to be there for regular life to continue, this area has several Tibetan settlements. It is located almost 6km from the town of Kushalnagar, towards Mysore. After the Chinese takeover of Tibet, many refugees settled here. And the monastery was established in 1970s. The 40 feet long statues are the major attractions of the monastery.

Places to visit in Coorg

The campus is huge and sprawling. There is a main monastery, another monastery (which was under maintenance when we visited). And manicured gardens around. Apart from this, the campus is also lined up with residential lodges on either side where the students, workers and teachers reside. Like in any other buddhist establishment, you will find utter peace and solitude here. After having visited another beautiful Monastery on our trip to Palampur , this was our second visit to a buddhist monastery in the last couple of months. And both the experiences were equally beautiful. Although a section of the Golden temple Monastery was closed for renovation at the time of our visit, but we still found the rest of the place very enchanting. Thus, we will rank it as one of the top places to see in Coorg.

Nisargadhama

Nisargadhama is a beautiful island formed on river Kaveri near Kushalnagar . On our way from Golden temple monastery to Madikeri town, we passed by Nisargadhama. Although we very much wanted to stop here, but there was some construction going on. And due to it, the entrance was closed to public. (Sigh!!!). From what I have researched and heard from experience of other travelers, Nisargadhama is very well maintained oasis of green right in the middle of river Kaveri. The whole island is well groomed in the form of a picnic and recreational spot. Also, different pet animals, some deers, ducks etc. are also present on the island, particularly making it interesting for kids. A well built rope bridge leads to the island. One can easily spend half a day here enjoying picnic and endeavor with the flora and fauna in the middle of wilderness.

PS: this is yet another on our list of places to visit in Coorg in a day. This particular option is often skipped by travelers. But we highly recommend visiting here as it is on your way from Bangalore to Coorg. And is a beautiful escape amidst nature, and a perfect picnic spot. Particularly if you are visiting Coorg with family, and young kids.

Top places to see in coorg

Madikeri Fort & Museum

After visiting the Golden temple monastery next we headed to Madikeri Town where our first stop was the Madikeri fort. Built for the first time in 17th Century and then rebuilt by Tipu Sultan in granite structure, this fort stands as a testimony to the glorious past of India. In the north east side of the fort are two big life size elephant statues in black. On one side to these elephants are fort sections that now have several government offices. And on the other side is the section which public can explore.

places to visit in Coorg

Stepping inside the later section led us to a small yet beautiful temple. And moving further, we entered into another section of the fort. Again, some government offices are stationed here. Although not half as massive as the forts of Rajasthan like Kumbhalgarh,  Jaisalmer , Amer Fort   and Chittorgarh fort . Still, looking at parts of the fort you will get a feeling of how glorious they would have been in their prime. However, I was saddened by looking at the broken window glasses and moisture slowly eroding the walls of the fort. Clearly, there is a lack of maintenance. Hopefully, the government takes some steps to restore some sections of the fort.

Madikeri Fort Museum

There is a beautiful little museum at the entrance of the campus of Madikeri fort. It is opened in one of the fort buildings. And it showcases several interesting pieces right from the stone carvings of very old times to the modern artifacts used at the times of General Cariappa. It has several invaluable manuscripts from the time of the old kings, written on palm leaves. Some weapons used during that era. Paintaings and intricate statues carved out of wood logs. An interesting corner of the fort. One of the top places to see in Coorg.

Abbey Falls

After visiting Madikeri fort, we had lunch at a Sagar Restaurant just opposite the fort. From there, we headed towards Abbey Falls, a picturesque waterfall setting further inside Coorg. As we arrived here, it was mid noon. We parked our vehicle and headed to the pathway that leads to the waterfalls. It is a mix of mud and concrete stairs that lead finally to a broader platform right in front of the waterfalls.

Not just are the Abbey waterfalls beautiful (as you can see in the snap below), but the small 10 minutes trek to the waterfalls is an experience in itself. The path leads through dense rainforests. And as you approach the waterfalls, you can hear the melody produced by the falls from a distance itself. As you approach nearer, the sound of waterfalls increases slowly, engulfing all the noise created by the tourists around. And all you hear is the song of nature – in Abbey waterfalls, in the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves around.

Talakaveri is believed to be the origin of the river Kaveri. There is a beautiful and ancient temple here. It is dedicated to the Goddess Kaveriamma. And there are idols of some other Hindu deities also present in this temple. Also, there is a kund (big tank) of water here where devotees can take a dip into the water. Actually there is an interesting legend behind the origin of river Kaveri and Talakaveri. It goes like this:

The river Kaveri was held captive in a kamandal (A container used to hold sacred water) by the sage  Agastya  . The hindu lord Ganesha went on a quest to free the river. For this, he took the form of a crow. And while the sage was meditating, the crow perched on the kamandal. As the sage opened his eyes, he shooed away the crow. While the crow flew off, he made sure to tupple the Kamandal. As a result, water started flowing out of it, taking the form the river Kaveri. And yes, you guessed it right, the spot where it all happened, is known as Talakaveri!!

Virajpet Golf Course

From Abbey falls, we headed towards our homestay, casa coorg. Crossing the town of Madikeri, we moved towards Virajpet. The drive was ever refreshing through the forests of western ghats. Finally, we took a diversion from the main road. The path leading to casa coorg from the main road is a single lane road that winds through slightly hilly terrain. And on either side of the road stretches a beautiful golf course.

top places to see in coorg

By the time we reached here, we had no doubt left as to why Coorg is called the Scotland of India. This golf course is privately maintained by the association of golfers in this region. But I must say, it is so beautifully maintained. It is neatly landscaped with ponds, trees, bougainvillea shrubs, and fields in between the golf platforms. It gives a refreshing look to the whole area. It’s a pleasure walking on the road in this area early morning and evenings when the sun is mild and the wind is slightly cold – A walk to remember !! And we did take a walk in the whole area the next day in the evening, along with our newly formed friends from the resort – the owner’s pet dogs.

Nagarhole National Park

When we started our journey back to Bangalore from Virajpet, we crossed from the middle of Nagarhole. Although, we didn’t have time to take a safari in the park. (PS: safari timings are fixed and you should get in touch with the forest department if you tend to take one. Head here for the official site of nagarhole national park and safari timing details). But the morning fresh air, the dense forests on either side of the road and some of the wildlife that we encountered randomly more than made up for our missing the safari. We also saw an elephant base camp where several elephants were roaming around. And managed to capture some of the giant tuskers.

We want to return back to Nagarhole and take a safari through the wilderness. In fact there are resorts right inside the forest where one can stay as well. And we intend to do exactly that. I guess it deserves a dedicated weekend to explore the length and breadth of the flora and fauna at Nagarhole National Park.

places to visit in Coorg

Iruppu Falls

Another beautiful waterfalls in Coorg. It is located quiet close to Nagarhole National Park. The Lakshman Tirtha River which is a tributary of the river Kaveri starts from these falls. So, they are often called the Lakshman Tirtha Falls as well. The waterfalls are located quiet close to the highway, bordering the Kerala/Wayand border with Karnataka. And they are frequented by tourists from both Kodagu and Wayanad side. The waterfalls are quiet majestic during and right after the monsoons. On one side of the falls is the Shiva temple. Thus, the region attracts both nature enthusiasts as well as pilgrims with equal interests. This is last but not the least on our list of places to visit in Coorg in one day.

Planning an effective itinerary

Coorg is a big district in Karnataka, India. And hence, some of the above mentioned places are located at quiet some distance from one another. So, the most effective way to visit here is to club together the places which are located nearby. Also, there are different routes that can be taken from Bangalore or Mysore while traveling to Coorg. (1) Route 1 : The Madikeri route which ends up at Madikeri (2) Route 2: The Nagarhole route that passes through a stretch of the Nagarhole national park and ends at Virajpet side of Coorg.

If you are taking route 1, you can start early and visit Golden Temple, Nisargadham, Madikeri Fort, Abbey Falls and Talakaveri upon reaching Coorg the first day, in the order of mention. And then, on the second day you can visit Nagarhole National Park and Iruppu Falls. However, if you are taking route 2 then you can reverse the itinerary for the two days.

Where to stay in Coorg

There are numerous wonderful homestays all over Coorg. When we went here, we stayed at Casa Coorg Homestay which is owned by an ex Indian army couple. It was located near Virajpet in a very serene atmosphere. There are plenty of homestays along the Madikeri line as well, in case you prefer to stay closer to Madikeri town. Apart from the home stays there are plenty of top notch resorts including orange county and many others, and also numerous hotels in Coorg. However, we will strongly recommend staying in a homestay for the authentic local experience and homely atmosphere. It is economical as well on your pocket.

You can book an accommodation in Coorg with one of our travel partners by clicking here at Booking – Coorg home page or here at Agoda Coorg Home page. If you want to stay closer to all the above attractions book something on Madikeri side. While for more tranquil experience, book on the Virajpet side.

Top places to see in coorg

In 2021, we drove to Coorg once again from Bangalore and stayed at Capitol Village Resort for a quick weekend getaway amidst nature. Our kids totally loved it, staying in a farm surrounded by natural beauty, just running around, enjoying nature! Checkout our vlog about the journey and our stay at Capitol Village Resort here –

Where to eat in Coorg

Coorg is famous for it’s non vegetarian food. But alas, being vegetarian, we can’t give you much guidance here. Enjoy the local cuisines, cooked at home, in case you have decided to stay at a homestay. Otherwise, while roaming out, there are plenty of restaurants in Madikeri, particularly around the main market. There is a nice Shanti Sagar restaurant right opposite Madikeri Fort where we had our own lunch on the first day of our visit to Coorg. There are lesser options towards Virajpet side, particularly for vegetarians. When driving from Bangalore or Mysore, you can have your breakfast at one of the multiple outlets along the highway.

Some more insider tips

  • Coorg experiences summer during the months of mid Feb – March. Apart from this, weather is mild and pleasant all through the year. It receives abundant rainfall. Rain starts in March itself and continues all the way till October. In the later months, post rain, the area becomes extremely beautiful pertaining to the new layer of green plantations and dense forests.
  • Homestays are speciality in Coorg. Although the concept is catching up in rest of India as well. The homestays of Coorg have been there for quiet a long time. Stay at one for authentic experience.
  • Coorg is famous for it’s coffee, spices, chocolate and dry fruits in Karnataka. So, if you want to shop for the same at lesser prices, head to the wholesale outlets across Coorg district.
  • Although you can do a weekend trip to Coorg from Bangalore or Mysore. But for a deeper experience and better covering the places, we will suggest at least 3-4 days to spend here.
  • When staying in remote areas, nearer to forests, inquire with your host before heading out, to ensure the safe trails. Because many areas, and sometimes even highways are visited by wild animals, particularly herds of elephants.
  • Wear comfortable shoes when you travel here since you will be doing some trekking through the hilly terrains here and there. Or even if you are just heading for a walk, it helps.
  • Carry an umbrella with you, as it rains quiet often in Coorg.
  • If you are headed to forest trails, beware of leaches. There are many in the denser regions, particularly in the rainy season. You can check with locals on how to keep them out of your way.

After Indian independence, Coorg became a separate state. It was later merged with Mysore State which was renamed Karnataka in 1973.

The Kodavas are the early settlers of this region. They have their own unique culture, traditions, and language too.

Places To Visit in Coorg in 1 Day

Start your one-day Coorg sightseeing tour with Namdroling Monastery , popularly known as the Golden Temple.

It is located in Bylakuppe about 35 km away from Madikeri. Bylakuppe is the second largest Tibetan settlement in the world outside Tibet, the largest being in Dharamshala.

The foundation of the monastery was laid in 1963. Initially a bamboo structure, today it is one of the most impressive Buddhist temples in South India.

The monastery is home to thousands of lamas, monks, and nuns, making it the world’s largest teaching center of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Several beautiful Tibetan paintings adorn the temple interiors. In the prayer hall, there are huge golden statues of three Tibetan deities.

The statue of Buddha Shakyamuni is placed in the center, flanked by Guru Padmasambhava on the left and Buddha Amitayus on the right.

Apart from exploring the temple, spend some time wandering around the lush green gardens of the monastery complex.

You can get there by local bus from Madikeri. The nearest bus stop is in Kushalnagar. From here, take an auto-rickshaw to the monastery complex.

Another option is to rent a cab from Madikeri which will drop you at the monastery in about an hour.

The monastery is open from 9 am to 6 pm.

Time required to visit: 1.5 to 2 hours.

Next up is the visit to Nisargadhama which is just about 8 km from Namdroling Monastery.

It is a picturesque island formed by the river Kaveri and covers 64 acres of lush forest area. You need to cross a hanging rope bridge to get here.

Teeming with greenery, this place is ideal for those looking for a nature retreat.

Some of the must-visit attractions on this island are deer park and bird park where you can even feed the birds. Besides this, you can enjoy boating in the tranquil waters of the Kaveri River.

If you are looking for some adventure, partake in activities like zip-lining and rope climbing.

It also offers overnight stay options in the river-side cottages. The property is run and maintained by the Karnataka Forest Department.

Nisargadhama Island is open from 9 am to 5 pm.

Before heading to the next attraction, it’s time for a lunch break. Stop off in Kushalnagar for a meal or continue your journey to Madikeri and have lunch there. Check out the where to eat section for recommendations on places to eat in Madikeri and Kushalnagar.

Madikeri Fort is situated in the heart of Madikeri town at a distance of about 30 km from Kushalnagar.

It is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Coorg. The fort was built in the late 1600s by Mudduraja, the then ruler of the Kingdom of Coorg.

Originally a mud structure, this fort was rebuilt by Tipu Sultan in granite. It has undergone numerous structural changes under the reigns of different rulers.

The British conquered this fort in 1834 after the Coorg War . They erected a church within the fort complex and also built a clock tower.

There is a museum abutting the church building. It showcases the history of Coorg through various artifacts. A Ganapathi temple is also located within the premises.

The opening hours are from 10 am to 5:30 pm (closed on Mondays).

Time required to visit: 0.5 to 1 hour.

Practical information: Madikeri Fort is currently closed for renovation work. So, make sure to check the reopening status before you visit.

The next stop on this list of ‘ amazing places to visit in Coorg in 1 day ’ is Abbey Falls. It is roughly 6 km away from Madikeri and can be reached by an auto-rickshaw or by cab.

Set amidst lush plantations of coffee and spice, Abbey Falls is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Coorg. It cascades down from a height of 70 feet and forms a deep pool at the bottom.

A short walk from the entrance via a series of steps brings you to the viewing area.

There is a hanging bridge right opposite the waterfall. You can enjoy excellent views of the falls standing atop the bridge.

The falls are most voluminous during monsoon and in the early winter months. If you are visiting in the summers, they may not appear equally impressive.

It is open from 9 am to 5 pm.

Time required to visit: 1 to 1.5 hours.

After visiting Abbey Falls, head to the Omkareshwara Temple in Madikeri.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built in the nineteenth century by King Lingarajendra II as an act of penance.

According to folklore tales, the king committed a sin by killing a brahmin for his political ambitions. He started getting nightmares and lost his peace of mind. In order to seek repentance for his deeds, he constructed this holy temple.

The temple overlooks a beautiful pond with a mandapa in the middle. The structure of the temple is inspired by the Islamic style of architecture. It features a central dome and four minarets, one at each corner.

Along with seeking divine blessings, you can admire the architectural uniqueness of the temple.

The opening hours are from 6.30 am to 12.00 pm and 5:00 pm to 8.00 pm.

Raja’s Seat

Your last stop for the day is Raja’s seat. It is approximately 1 kilometer from Omkareshwar Temple.

Once a favourite sunset spot for the royals of Coorg, Raja’s Seat today is a major tourist attraction in Coorg. It encompasses a viewing platform and a neatly maintained garden.

Affording panoramic views of the surrounding valley and the distant mountains, Raja’s Seat is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Coorg in 1 day.

Coorg is magical year-round and perhaps at its best in winter. The best time of the year to visit Coorg is winter (October to February) and early summer (March to April).

In winter, the temperature varies from less than 15°C at night to around 29°C in the daytime. Coorg experiences the summer season from March to May. Although the temperature rises a bit, the weather remains comfortably pleasant.

It attracts huge crowds in late summer, particularly in May, when people rush to hill stations to escape the blazing heat of the plains. If you want to enjoy Coorg without the crowds, plan your visit in winter.

With the onset of the rainy season in June, the entire region turns into a monsoon wonderland. However, June to September is not a great time for sightseeing because of heavy rainfall.

Last Updated on April 10, 2024

My journeys to Coorg have been nothing short of magical. Having visited this enchanting district in Karnataka thrice on weekend trips from Bangalore, I’ve been captivated by its verdant landscapes. Coorg, with its rich history and breathtaking views, is a destination where a weekend trip merely scratches the surface. So here is a 5-day Bangalore to Coorg road trip plan for a wholesome experience this season.

I have crafted this itinerary for those who love long drives, so most of my post will focus on the 5-day plan for Bangalore to Coorg road trip by car . However, I have also included a 2-days itinerary for Coorg in the end, for those who want to make the most of their weekend getaway from Bangalore.

Coorg is the most beautiful district in Karnataka (a state in India) dotted with waterfalls, rivulets, coffee groves and greenery all around. IT is also a historic site famous for the Kodagu war clan. Check out the best road trip plan for Coorg from Bangalore

A Quick Outline

Coorg – A Short Background For The Unintroduced

Coorg, known as Kodagu, is a district in Karnataka, India, famed for its verdant landscapes and cultural richness. It covers approximately 4,102 square kilometers in the Western Ghats , known for its rolling hills, coffee plantations, and dense forests.

Historically, Coorg has been ruled by various dynasties, and the Kodavas, the native warrior community, are central to its cultural identity. Uniquely, Kodavas are allowed to carry firearms without a license, a privilege granted by the British due to their martial history.

The introduction of coffee and tea plantations during British rule has significantly shaped Coorg’s economy and landscape. Today, it stands as a major tourism destination, drawing visitors for its natural beauty, adventure sports, and unique culture.

The district’s cuisine, characterized by pork dishes and rice-based specialties, and festivals like Kailpodh and Puttari, reflect its rich cultural tapestry.

Coorg also plays a crucial role in environmental conservation as part of the biodiversity-rich Western Ghats, making it a hotspot for ecological and wildlife enthusiasts.

Where To Stay In Coorg?

This red colored building is a quaint little homestay with a pool in a coffee estate in Coorg. We stayed here on our Bangalore to Coorg road trip

In Coorg, accommodation options are as varied as the landscape, offering something for every traveler. For a 5-day road trip plan I ideally recommend staying in Madikeri for two nights and Virajpet for two nights.

Madikeri, the district’s heart, is the most popular choice, known for its range of stays from luxurious resorts to cozy homestays, catering to diverse budgets and preferences. Here, you can find heritage bungalows and modern hotels, many offering stunning views of the lush hills and plantations.

#Top Pick s

🌟 Zostel Coorg – Located 8km from Madikeri Fort, this beautiful property costs about Rs. 3500 per night for an entire villa for two people.

🌟 Serene Woods – Located 1.8km from Madikeri Fort, right in the middle of a coffee estate, this place is worth your money. It’s in the mid-budget at around Rs. 6000/- per night. Best part is you get to explore the coffee garden within the premises.

🌟 Taj Madikeri – The 5-star luxury resort is the best property in Coorg for those ready to pay a premium for first class amenities and dream-like views.

Virajpet, slightly offbeat and less crowded, is perfect for those seeking tranquility. It hosts a mix of upscale resorts and quaint cottages, ideal for a peaceful retreat amidst nature. For a more immersive experience, consider staying in plantation bungalows or eco-friendly lodges located in the midst of coffee estates, especially in areas like Siddapur and Kushalnagar.

That's me in my light-colored summer dress and slippers in Club Mahindra Virajpet resort.

🌟 Club Mahindra Virajpet : This is where I stayed on my road trip and it is my top recommendation for Virajpet. Coorg Road Trip Plan in Details

Also check out the complete and compact road trip packing list for a hassle-free road trip from Bangalore.

Day 1: Bangalore to Coorg By Road via NH 275

winding roads we encountered in our Bangalore to Coorg road trip

NH 275 offer the shortest route to Coorg with filled with scenic views, smooth roads, and a taste of Karnataka’s rich cultural tapestry. The route, stretching approximately 250 kilometers, takes 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and stops.

Start your journey early (say 6 am – 6:30 am) from Bangalore to make the most of the day and avoid the city’s morning traffic. The early hours also offer a cooler and more pleasant driving experience. Navigate towards Mysuru Road.

After about 10 km you enter NH 275 one of the best national highways in the state. You will need to pay toll tax at different points on this road. We always use FASTtag for paying tolls faster and more conveniently.

Breakfast at Srirangapatna

Traditional South Indian breakfast - two white idlis with chutney and sambhar served on a banana leaf

After about a 2-hour drive covering nearly 125 kilometers, you’ll reach Srirangapatna, a historic town with a rich heritage. A recommended stop for breakfast is at Saravana Bhavan, where you can indulge in a delicious South Indian breakfast, reenergizing for the journey ahead.

On a longer road trip, you can actually spend more time here, but in this plan I suggest to just stop for breakfast and enjoy the views while driving

Visit Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe

Glittering Golden statues of Buddha in the Namdroling Monastery of Bylakuppe

From Srirangapatna, continue your drive for about an hour and a half, covering around 88 kilometers to reach Bylakuppe. This land was given to the Tibetan monks who sought refuge in India during the 1960s. There are many monasteries here, of which Namdroling, also known as the Golden Temple is the largest.

The Namdroling Monastery, a major attraction here, is known for its magnificent Tibetan architecture and serene ambiance. Spending an hour or two here is enough to explore the monastery, soak in the peaceful vibes, and learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture.

On a usual weekend, you can also take a trip to just Bylakuppe for an immersive experience of the Tibetan settlements in India.

Explore Nisargadhama Riverine Island

River glittering under the sunrays peeking through the thick canopies in Nisargadhama

A short 3-kilometer drive from here will bring you to the enchanting Nisargadhama riverine island around midday. This ecological park, nestled on the banks of the Cauvery River, is an ideal spot for a leisurely walk amidst bamboo groves, teak, and sandalwood trees.

You can also visit the Nisargadhama bird park here.

Detour to Chiklihole Reservoir

Water jetting out of the Chiklihole Reservoir in Coorg and tourists climbing down the stairs after watching the beauty of the surroundings.

Next, head towards the Chiklihole reservoir, a lesser-known yet serene spot perfect for nature lovers. This tranquil location is about 15 kilometers from Nisargadhama and offers a picturesque setting for a short break.

Conclude at Your Hotel in Madikeri

Finally, a drive of approximately 20 kilometers from Chiklihole will lead you to Madikeri, the heart of Coorg. By late afternoon or early evening, you should reach your hotel. Madikeri offers a range of accommodation options, from luxurious resorts to cozy homestays.

This is the time to unwind and relax, soaking in the cool, refreshing air of Coorg, and preparing for the adventures that await in the coming days.

This first day of the Bangalore to Coorg road trip via NH 275 combines a mix of travel, culture, and natural beauty, setting the tone for an unforgettable journey through one of Karnataka’s most cherished destinations.

Day 2: Sightseeing Around Madikeri

After an invigorating first day and a restful night in Madikeri, the second day of your journey is dedicated to exploring the wonders around this charming town. Starting your day with breakfast, aim to begin your sightseeing around 9 am to make the most of the daylight.

The majestic Waterfall called abbey Falls at Coorg. This is the highlight of Bangalore to Coorg road trip

Journey to Abbey Falls

  • Distance and Time: Abbey Falls is located just 8 kilometers from Madikeri, making it a short and scenic drive of about 20 minutes.
  • Timing and Duration: The best time to visit is in the morning when it’s less crowded. The falls are open from 9 am to 5 pm, and there’s a nominal entry fee of around INR 20 per person. An hour here should suffice to enjoy the beauty of the falls and capture some great photos.

Trek or Jeep Safari to Mandalpatti

A group if girls travelling to Mandapatti - the famous site near Madikeri for breathtaking views

Post Abbey Falls, head towards Mandalpatti, about 18 kilometers from Madikeri. It’s advisable to hire a jeep as the road can be rough and challenging for regular vehicles.

The journey to Mandalpatti offers breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. At the viewpoint, you’re greeted with a panoramic view of the lush green landscapes, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers.

Timing and Cost: The jeep safari can be arranged at the base of Mandalpatti, costing around INR 1500 – 2000 per jeep, accommodating up to 5-6 people. The safari usually takes around 3 hours, including the time spent at the viewpoint.

Alternative to Mandalpatti : Since a trek to Tadiadmol is already in the plan you can skip Mandalpatti if you want to. If you missed visiting Chiklihole Reservoir on Day 1, you could opt for a tour here instead of Mandalpatti. It’s a peaceful spot, ideal for relaxation and nature walks.

Late Lunch Back in Madikeri

After returning from your morning adventures, aim for a late lunch in Madikeri around 2 or 3 pm. The town offers various dining options, from traditional Kodava cuisine to popular Indian dishes.

Evening At Madikeri

You can explore the city center of Madikeri after lunch. Walk to the Omkareshwara Temple – the most famous place of worship in Coorg. There is a small pond surrounded by a well-maintained garden inside the premises.

Then, proceed to Raja’s Seat, a mere kilometer from the temple. This is a landscaped park at the hilltop.

The best time to visit is during sunset, around 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, offering spectacular views of the sun setting over the hills. The entry fee is nominal, around INR 5 per person, and there’s an additional charge if you wish to take the toy train ride in the garden.

You can also enjoy the musical fountain here after the sunset. This is a great place to visit with children.

This day combines the thrill of exploring natural wonders with the tranquility of historic sites, all within close proximity to Madikeri. It’s a day that captures the essence of Coorg, with its blend of adventure, serenity, and scenic beauty.

Often skipped in the Coorg itineraries, Barapole river rafting was in fact the hghlight of my first trip to Coorg way back in 2015. It was a budget trip with friends, and we stayed in an eco-homestay at a hilltop, reached by a somewhat daunting jeep ride in the dark.

The trip was filled with firsts – from rafting in the vigorous Barapole river to trekking and visiting Namdroling Monastery. The moments of watching the sunrise over the hills, living in a small room with least amenities and the camaraderie around a bonfire at night added to the essence of adventure and camaraderie that Coorg embodies.

Day 3 promises an adrenaline rush with a river rafting adventure at Barapole, followed by a visit to the serene Iruppu Falls, and a relaxing evening as you shift to your hotel in Virajpet.

Barapole River Rafting experience

A group of four girls ready to embark on the river rafting adventure in Coorg

Try to check out of your hotel as early as possible today, preferably by 10 am. Then drive to the Barapole River Rafting Center in Srimangala, about 80 kilometers from Madikeri. This 2-hour drive takes you through beautiful landscapes, setting the tone for an adventurous day.

Rishikesh comes to mind whenever we speak of whitewater rafting in India. However, this is also a very well established rafting center.

The Barapole river is famous for its exhilarating rapids, suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. Rafting here usually starts from 7 am to 4pm in batches of 1 to 1.5 hours. Add to that the time of transport from end point to the start point, and additional activities, you can reserve 3 hours for this activity.

It costs approximately INR 1,000 to INR 1,500 per person. Under expert guidance, this experience is both thrilling and safe.

They provide safety jackets and helmets to everyone and give you instructions needed for the adventure. All seven of us embarked on this adventure on a single raft with our guide doing most of the heavy-lifting when it came to rowing in the water.

Beware, they might push you into the water at a safe location but tell them not to do such things in the very beginning. This just adds to the thrill, and I haven’t heard of anyone getting hurt in this, but I still, they shouldn’t do it if you tell them not to.

At an extra cost they will also get you a nose-dive into the waterfall at Barapole by pulling the boat upwards against the direction of the falls. Yeah, and only one person does it, speak of “ Bahubali ” for real!

A group of five girls and two boys along with the trainer ready to go for the river rafting adventure in Coorg

Lunch Post Rafting

After your rafting adventure, indulge in some local flavors at a nearby eatery. The area offers a variety of dining options where you can enjoy authentic Kodava cuisine.

Alternate Route for the Day

Whitewater rafting is a seasonal activity best enjoyed in the months of monsoon due to high water-level. The activity remains closed for 8 months a year and active only between June to September. In fact, most online bookings are open from July, so please verify ahead at your hotel or tourist center if you are visiting in June.

So if you are travelling on any other time you need to have an alternate plan.

Explore more of Madikeri

If you are not planning Barapole river rafting, then I recommend keeping aside some time today for visit to the Omkareshwara temple, instead of squeezing it on day 2.

After this you can visit the General Thimayya Memorial museum and then the Golf park of Madikeri.

Drive to Iruppu Falls

coorg places to visit in one day from bangalore

Iruppu Falls, also known as Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, is a stunning cascade located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka . It holds both natural and mythological significance, making it a popular spot for both tourists and pilgrims.

The falls are a sight to behold, especially during the monsoon when they are at their fullest. The entry fee is around INR 50 per person, and the area is typically open from 8 am to 5 pm. The walk to the falls takes you through a forested path, offering a refreshing encounter with nature.

This place isn’t just a visual treat; it’s steeped in intriguing trivia that adds to its allure.

When you delve into the legends surrounding these falls, you discover their connection to the epic Ramayana. It’s believed that Lakshmana, Lord Rama’s brother, shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills to bring forth water to quench Rama’s thirst. This act created the Lakshmana Tirtha River, which cascades down as the Iruppu Falls.

As you stand before the falls, you’re not just witnessing a natural wonder but a site of mythological significance.

Drive to Virajpet with a stop at Chelvara Falls

A group of three girls posing infront of the majestic Chelvara Falls pouring at its full force in the monsoon

After the Barapole river rafting or the alternate itinerary, now it’s time to head to Virajpet before the sun sets. The scenic route to Virajpet is through the Bramhagiri eco zone, so it makes most sense to try and reach Virajpet before the evening.

Chelvara falls in Virajpet is a great spot to pause and enjoy at involving a hike that takes hardly 30 minutes or less.

After this you can retire at your hotel at Virajpet.

Day 4: Tadiadmol Trek and Long drive to Talacauvery

Trek to tadiadmol betta.

11 Best Weekend Getaways From Bangalore, India

O nce a retirement village for the wealthy, known for its year-round spring weather and peaceful ambience, Bangalore (Bengaluru) today has transformed into the Silicon Valley of India. If you live in Bangalore or are visiting Bangalore for work, the best way to rewind after a hectic work-week is to travel away from the bustle of the city.

Good news is that there’s no dearth of weekend getaways from Bangalore. History, UNESCO heritage sites, mountains, wildlife and beaches – name it and you can have it all within a 350 km radius of the city. It’s easy to be spoilt for choices. So based on my personal experience I have selected the top 11 places to visit with kids and family during the weekends.

1. Mysore (145 km from Bangalore)

Just a scenic drive away from Bangalore lies the majestic city of Mysore. Renowned for its grand palaces, vibrant markets, and rich cultural heritage, Mysore offers a delightful blend of history and charm.

You can visit Mysore even on an exhaustive day trip from Bangalore, but I highly recommend slowing down with your family in this lovely city.

Explore the opulent Mysore Palace, followed by the art gallery, Mysore wax museum and a trip to the cinematic Vrindavan gardens in the evening.

On the next day stroll through the bustling Devaraja Market, and visit Chamundi Hills to seek blessings at the Chamundi temple or simply enjoy the views.

If you are visiting with kids, don’t miss out on the Mysore Zoo – one of the best zoological parks in India.

2. Yercaud (215 km from Bangalore)

Yercaud in the local language Tamil means a land round the lake. And that’s what it is – a charming hill station in the Eastern ghats around the sparkling Emerald Lake.

Reach Yercaud by driving through the 32-km loop road famous for its scenic viewpoints and hairpin belts. Embark on leisurely nature walks through fragrant spice plantations, take a boat ride on the serene Emeral Lake, also known as the Yercaud lake and spend time with your kids in Anna Park and rose garden.

With its cool climate and pristine landscapes, Yercaud is the perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore for all seasons.

3. Sakleshpur (220 km from Bangalore)

Tucked away in the verdant Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Known for its lush coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and gushing waterfalls, Sakleshpur offers a picturesque backdrop for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Trek to the historic star-shaped castle – Manjarabad Fort. Unwind amidst the tranquil ambiance of Bisle Ghat, and soak in the beauty of Magajahalli Falls.

With its pristine beauty and tranquil atmosphere, Sakleshpur is the perfect destination for a peaceful weekend escape.

4. Coorg (240 km from Bangalore)

Venture a bit farther from Bangalore, and you’ll discover the enchanting hill station of Coorg, also known as the “Scotland of India.” Famous for its verdant coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and cascading waterfalls, Coorg offers a serene retreat amidst nature’s bounty.

There are two main towns in Coorg where you can plan your stay – Madikeri and Virajpet. Madikeri is the central point for exploring the historic Madikeri Fort, the majestic Abbey Falls and the Omkareshwar Temple. Kids will enjoy spending time in the landscaped park of Raja’s Seat in the evening.

From Virajpet you can visit the more offbeat places like Talacauvery and Iruppu Falls.A road trip to Coorg from Bangalore will take you through the most scenic roads of Western Ghats. You can also reach Madikeri by overnight bus from Bangalore.

5. Chikmagalur (250 km from Bangalore)

Visit the land of coffee, the place that claims to have introduced coffee to India – Chikmagalur. Whether you are visiting with kids or elderly parents, or just with a group of young adventurous people, Chikmagalur has something for everyone.

Chikmagalur is best experienced in a homestay hosted by the owners of small coffee estates in the region. They will take you on a tour of their coffee estate and blow you away with their hospitality.

You can book a jeep for your sightseeing adventure visiting the Jhari Falls, Baba Budan giri hills, lakes, and trekking spots.

Kids will enjoy visiting Mahatma Gandhi Park with a short toy train joyride in the hills.

You can reach Chikmagalur from Bangalore by overnight buses that ply daily from Bangalore.

6. Ooty (270 km from Bangalore)

Fondly referred to as the “Queen of Hills,” Ooty captivates visitors with its rolling tea estates, picturesque gardens, and cool climate.

Ooty is famous for its scenic tea gardens, the floral and faunal diversity and the Nilgiri Mountain railways – a UNESCO world heritage site.

Take a scenic ride on Nilgiri Toy train, stroll through the vibrant flower gardens of Government Botanical Garden, or embark on a boat ride across the serene Ooty Lake.

You can reach Ooty by overnight bus, train or by driving.

7. Shimoga (280 km from Bangalore)

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Shimoga, also known as the “Gateway to the Western Ghats.”

Drive straight to the majestic Jog Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in India and admire the poetic beauty of nature. The trek through the dense forests of Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary or book a safari with kids.

Then you can visit the 1000-year-old Kelladi temple and watch sunset at the Mattur Lake. Next day drive to the Agumbe rain forest or trek to the Kabbaledurga fort.

The main highlight of Shimoga however, are the hidden lakes that are not commercialized for any tourist activity. That’s why the best way to reach Shimoga is by a road trip so that you can stop at these obscure lakes and do nothing but just stand and stare.

8. Wayanad (280 km from Bangalore)

Venture into the pristine wilderness of Wayanad, a picturesque district nestled amidst the Western Ghats in Kerala. Explore the lush tea estates of Vythiri, trek to the stunning viewpoints of Chembra Peak, or immerse yourself in the serene ambiance of Pookode Lake.

If you love wildlife safaris, then plan your stay in Sultan Bathery. Take a safari through Wayanad Tiger reserve – one of the best places in India to spot tigers and wild elephants. Then you can visit the prehistoric Edakkal caves for a unique experience.

There are regular buses to Wayanad by which you can reach Wayanad in the early morning on Saturday. You can prebook a car from hotel for pickup and early check-in.

9. Pondicherry (315 km from Bangalore)

Experience a blend of French colonial charm and Indian culture in the coastal town of Pondicherry. This erstwhile French colony of India still retains some of the French vibes that have perfectly blended with the cosmopolitan new India.

Stroll on the beautiful Pondicherry promenade, explore the historic Bharthi Park, the opulent Botanical Garden and the several French-era churches of Pondicherry. A walking or cycling tour of the white town of Pondicherry will transport you to France.

While in Pondicherry don’t miss a trip to Auroville – an experimental global city across the beautiful Auroville beach. Then sail to Paradise Island for the most spectacular views and beach activities.

The best way to reach Pondicherry is by an overnight train to the Puducherry station. It’s also a very smooth ride from Bangalore to Pondicherry if you manage to leave early morning before the infamous Bangalore traffic kicks in.

10. Hampi (340 km from Bangalore)

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Watch the ruins of Vijayanagara empire come back to life infront of your eyes in this open-air museum.

Marvel at the architectural wonders of Hampi Bazaar, climb the iconic Matanga Hill for panoramic views, or witness the breathtaking sunset during a coracle ride in the Tungabhadra River.

On the next day drive to North Hampi to see the iconic stone chariot of Vittala Temple. It is one of the most famous monuments of India that often feature on the currency notes. Climb the Monkey Temple and engage in live music and merriment in the Hippie island.

If you are visiting with kids, skip Hippie island since the environment may not be particularly kid-friendly. Instead travel to Daroji wildlife sanctuary to spot the Indian sloth bear and for bird-watching.

11. Mahabalipuram (350 km from Bangalore)

This is another UNESCO heritage site that records the artistic and engineering genius of the 7 th- century Pallava dynasty of India. Embark on a journey to the historic town of Mahabalipuram, renowned for its magnificent rock-cut temples and sculptures. What’s more, it’s on the shore of the Bay of Bengal!

The magnificent Shore Temple, the intricately carved five monolithic structures called Pancha Rathas, or the bas-relief architectural marvel called Arjuna’s penance – each monument is steeped in glorious history.

With its rich cultural heritage and stunning coastal landscapes, Mahabalipuram offers a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty for a memorable weekend getaway.

To reach Mahabalipuram, take a train or flight to Chennai and then book a short ride to Mahabalipuram. You can also drive all the way to Mahabalipuram from Bangalore.

A Few Tips on Choosing Your Destination

If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to just relax in the lap of nature, book a luxury resort in Coorg or Chikmagalur. Surprisingly these are also the best places for adventure with friends offering trekking trails and whitewater rafting.

If you are looking for an exhaustive sightseeing tour of historic gems go for Hampi or Mahabalipuram. If you are visiting with kids, I highly recommend Yercaud, Ooty, and Pondicherry because your itinerary can be packed with kid-friendly activities.

If you love shopping, then Mysore is a paradise for you, while if you want to go off-the-beaten-track, choose Shimoga.

Opt for the high-altitude hill stations in summer for respite from the rising mercury levels. I recommend Yercaud, Kodaikanal and Ooty.

Monsoon is the best time for the Western Ghats, also known as the monsoon ghats. This is the time to visit places like Chikmagalur, Coorg and Wayanad. The mountains come alive with waterfalls in full force and lush greenery all around.

I recommend planning trips to the beaches like Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, and Bekal in the winter in India.

That’s a wrap to the post. I am sure you will enjoy these places for your weekend trips from Bangalore.
