Coudersport PA: An Evolving Tourist Town

WHY GO : There are several reasons to stay in Coudersport PA in Potter County: the main one being that it’s closest to the only International Dark Skies designated area on the East Coast, Cherry Springs State Park. Coudersport is also located a few miles from a fantastic museum about the industry that put this forested, mountainous area of Pennsylvania on the map: lumber.

But of course, increased tourism brings increased interest in new shops, restaurants, and lodging to support it. So, lately, local entrepreneurs have been setting up shop on the main drag, and for now, an overnight here is affordable, mouthwatering, and fun. You can stay in a funky studio apartment or in a work-in-progress boutique hotel where Elliot Ness was interviewed for the book that would become “The Untouchables.” Read on for a truly offbeat getaway.

GO/NIGHT: Cherry Springs State Park – Dark Sky . (A 20-minute drive from Coudersport on Route 44, aka “Highway to the Stars”)

On new moon, cloudless nights, Cherry Springs SP is completely and utterly dark: as in can’t-see-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face dark.

Formerly an airstrip, adjacent to an old State Park (known for its Woodsman Show), far from any significantly populated town, and at the top of a hill, Cherry Springs affords a 360 degree field of view. Therein lies its value to both amateur stargazers and professional astronomers.

Dark Sky Cherry Springs State Park PA

As the only Dark Sky on the East Coast of the USA, designated by the International Dark-Sky Association , Cherry Springs State Park attracts thousands of outer space enthusiasts from all over the world to observe what our ancestors must have seen from their farms and villages long before electric lights obscured these views. Watching the stars pop, and the cloudy Milky Way get brighter and brighter, is a transcendent and spine tingling spectacle.

Curt Weinhold Night Sky Photographer

Serious Astronomers, hauling thousands of dollars in photographic and telescopic equipment, have access to a designated field and campground. This dedicated campground features its own free parking lot that is closed after dark. White light is not permitted on the field at all. That includes headlights, car interiors, computer lights, flashlights, tent, and camper lights.

The general public is asked to park in a lot across the street at the old airstrip, which hosts programming on many clear Friday and Saturday nights. No charge for those just coming at night to see the stars. Most visitors stay in Coudersport or Wellsboro. Night Sky photographer, Curt Weinhold leads workshops, $60 for 3 hours. (Private instruction on other nights, $130 for 3-4 hours). For now, there is no Visitor’s Center or lodging inside the State Park. Cherry Springs provides rustic camping sites for a fee.

TOUR: Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, Galeton PA

This region of PA is rich in natural resources. Lumber, coal and gas have made many a man a millionaire here since the 1800’s. When William Penn first scouted these thick woods in the early 1700’s, 90% of the land was covered with trees so dense, he could not see daylight. By the turn of the 20 th Century, only 30% of the trees remained.

Exhibits about the lumber industry in Pennsylvania at PA Lumber Museum

Nothing illustrates the vicissitudes of the local timber industry better than the PA Lumber Museum, 10 miles East of Coudersport in Sweden Valley. In 2015, the addition of a modern 7,000 sq. ft. entryway created a more open, sun drenched first impression, and room for “beefed up” events.

Roosevelt’s New Deal and the CCC

It’s worth stopping in to learn about the logging companies that decimated these dense forests in the mid 1800’s. So much so, the once-lush Alleghenies became a wasteland.

Enter Roosevelt’s New Deal and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), which replanted and laid the groundwork for managing and sustaining PA forests. Pennsylvania had more CCC Camps (153) than any other state except California. All told, over nine years (from 1933-1942), over three billion trees were planted.

PA State Park cabin built by CCC at PA Lumber Museum

Exhibits continue outside, and include a series of weathered buildings housing lumber-hauling steam engines(including the powerful Shay Locomotive), a sawmill, mess hall, and all services related to the sweaty, stinky, rough life in a logging/lumber camp.

The Lumber Industry Today

Panel depicting types of woods harvested in PA at PA Lumber Museum

And what about the lumber industry today? Managing forests for recreation, and adhering to sustainable practices, PA leads the nation in hardwood lumber (Oak, Maple, Cherry) production. Unlike other building materials, wood is the only “carbon negative” resource: young replanted forests absorb much more CO2 from the atmosphere than do older trees.

The Lumber Museum hosts a bevy of events, contests, and festivals year round. Try your luck at the Greased Pole Contest, Log Rolling Contest, Cross-Cut Saw Challenge, Bark Peelers’ Festival, and Spooky Lantern Tours. Kids love the Frog Jumping Contest and Sawdust Treasure Hunt, just to name a few. $8, open Wed-Sun. 9-5 (closed Mon, Tues.)

VISIT: Coudersport Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center

I’m a big fan of local art in small towns, especially when said art is more creative, unique, and affordable than in your average “gift shop.” Here, 35 artists and craftsmen/women broker their wares in a modest space on Main Street.  Along with hostess and birthday gifts, you can stock up on handcrafted foodstuffs, teas, herbal products, and soap for yourself, too.

Becky Obleski Lawn Ornaments Coudersport PA

Find Carol Jackson’s jarred jams, jellies, pickles, and famous (and totally delish) “Chow-Chow;” Cathy Snyder’s hand-woven baskets; Curt Weinhold’s Night Sky Photos; Laurie Shear’s paintings; Danett Wrightman’s gourd art; Jim Obleski’s wildlife art; Harry Porters gun cases and wooden hampers; Julie Baily’s soaps and bug spray; Esther Perry’s goat milk soaps; Helene Awrocki’s balms and teas; and, my favorite – Becky Obleski’s old glassware repurposed into bird baths and garden décor. Open Mon-Thurs 12-4, Fri. 9-8, Sat 9-5, Sun. 12-4.

SHOP/EAT/STAY: Olga’s Bistro, Gift Shop, Yarn Shop, and Guest Rooms

I’ve been following Olga and John Snyder since I drove through Coudersport in 2011 on my transcontinental Route 6 trip. Each year since, they’ve been adding on to their wildly colorful businesses.

Olgas Bistro Coudersport PA

The Bistro still serves one of the best meals in town, thanks to Olga’s obsession with organic farming. Many ingredients for pure, fresh, delicious dishes are sourced from Olga’s garden. Consequently, The Bistro offers a great selection of vegan and vegetarian meals.

Olgas Yarn Shop Coudersport PA

Next door, at Olga’s Yarn Shop, locals and visitors can join her knitting workshops, and Ukrainian Egg (Pysanky) painting classes.

From the Ukraine, Olga is skilled in this intricate and exquisite art form– rendering stories in miniature on eggshells. While in town, sign up for a class, and she will teach you.

Olgas Suite Coudersport PA

Upstairs, the Snyders have renovated two pretty appartments, with room for 5 people each. They’ve proven to be a hit with out of towners who come here for Cherry Springs “Dark Skies” State Park. $85 per night plus taxes and fees.

Cream and Sugar Coudersport PA

EAT: Cream & Sugar

Every ten days, owner Abbi Rossman must drive 2 ½ hours each way to State College PA to pick up Penn State Creamery ice cream (they don’t deliver) – arguably one of the top-ten ice creams brands in the USA. Besides ice cream, Cream and Sugar dishes out coffee, tea, salads, sandwiches, and baked goods the likes of Peach and Blueberry Squares – all mostly assembled with ingredients from local farms.

Cream and Sugar Interior Coudersport PA

Shelves in this open, bright space are stocked with candles, lotions, and essential oils from Sunrise Ridge, Amber Fowler’s jewelry, local honey and maple syrup. “The town needed a place where you could sit down with a cup of coffee, and where people could grab lunch and a teacher’s gift and not have to go to a bunch of stores,” said Rossman. Kids come in swarms after school, sit on the couches, play games. It’s a local hangout for all.

Crittenden Hotel Guest Suite Coudersport PA

STAY: Hotel Crittenden

If it’s your goal to stay in a work-in-progress boutique hotel for a pittance, here’s your chance.  In 2014, Chandra Livingston and Hans Nielsen purchased this dilapidated building, that had always been a hotel,  and set about renovating it.

There was no heat, and the embossed tin ceiling was coated in 14 layers of paint. “Our first year was all about stabilization, safety, and cleaning,” says Chandra.

The Elliot Ness Connection

Dining Room Crittenden Hotel Coudersport PA

On a historical note – Bureau of Prohibition agent, Elliot Ness, retired in Coudersport. Ness chose the Crittenden Restaurant as his meeting place with a ghostwriter who gathered information for the best-selling book (and movie), The Untouchables.

In fact, the Crittenden was a top hotel in its day. Susan B. Anthony swung by to speak about the Women’s Right to Vote. And both Cab Calloway and Joan Crawford stayed here.

But, naturally, towns fade and so do their star hotels. And then, as these hamlets revitalize (now, with the Cherry Spring State Park Dark Sky nearby), the hotels are prime to recover as well.

Currently there are six restored suites with diverse layouts and furniture. My quarters encompassed  two rooms with exposed brick wall, burnished hardwood floors, and comfy new bedding.

Surprisingly Excellent Restaurant

Inch by inch, the hotel is coming back to its glory days. Be sure, though, to have at least one meal in the surprisingly outstanding in-house restaurant. The kitchen is helmed by Chef Tara Fry, a native who Chandra knew as a baby. Fry returned to Coudersport after 20 years of stints in high-profile Maryland seafood restaurants, and Chandra was eager to hire her.

“Tara knows her way around fish,” claims Chandra. And, indeed she does. I wolfed down the excellent Maple Mustard Salmon ($19.95), which, like the rest of the entrees, comes with two sides plus soup or salad. Touted signatures include the Coconut Haddock broiled in coconut rum buerre blank ($17.95), and Thick Cut House-Smoked Brisket ($17.95).

Tap Room Crittenden Hotel Coudersport PA

The Tap Room in back of the restaurant appears to be the place where locals kick back with a craft beer – there are 12 on tap – and a game of pool. Rooms at Hotel Crittenden $79.50 per night.

The story is great but misses something important–the beautiful, wild scenery and hiking opportunities in the region. There should have been a mention of the 80+ mile-long Susquehannock Trail and the several other state parks nearby, as well as the many stunning views from pullouts along Rt. 44…..

I have a cabin outside of Coudersport. My husband bought a little shed about 40 years ago and made our cabin. Over the last 30+ years I’ve been coming up, I’ve seen this town just prosper and become a great town to visit.

Summit Trail Rides offers horseback riding adventures through the woods of Potter County for all levels.

Just fixed.

Cherry Springs State Park

Cherry Springs State Park is nearly as remote and wild today as it was two centuries ago.

Named for the large stands of black cherry trees originally found in the area, the 82-acre state park is surrounded by the 262,000-acre Susquehannock State Forest . The Susquehannock Trail passes nearby and offers 85 miles of backpacking and hiking.

Night sky enthusiasts flock to the park for its dark skies which are famous for great views of the Milky Way, planets, and hard-to-see astronomical objects and phenomena.

Seasons and Hours

The park is open every day of the year.

The Cherry Springs Rustic Campground is open the second Friday of April through the last weekend in October.

The Night Sky Public Viewing Area is intended for short term (a few hours or less) star gazing and is not permitted for overnight stays.

The Overnight Astronomy Observation Field is open to registered users all night.

Contact the Lyman Run State Park office for facility seasons and hours.

Reservations

Campsites in the campground are reservable. Make online reservations or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS, from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.

Dark Skies at Cherry Springs

Due to its exceptionally dark skies, Cherry Springs State Park is one of the best places on the eastern seaboard for stargazing and the science of astronomy , which is the study and observation of:

  • Other heavenly bodies

A dark night sky is a natural resource, just like plants, waterways, and wildlife. Recognizing this unique resource needed to be managed and protected, during 2000, DCNR declared Cherry Springs State Park its first Dark Sky Park.

Learn, Experience, Connect

Cherry Springs State Park offers a wide variety of environmental education programs year round. Visitors gain appreciation and awareness toward the natural and historical resources through guided walks and hands-on activities.

Weather permitting, a park educator or guest speaker presents public stargazing programs in the Night Sky Public Viewing Area and amphitheater.

These free programs are available throughout the summer. Program schedules are published in the local paper and at DCNR's calendar of events .

Woodsmen Show

During 1952, the first Woodsmen Show at Cherry Springs State Park attracted a crowd of 4,000 people.

Today, the annual Woodsmen Show attracts thousands of spectators for the early August event. The show features lumberjack contests in:

  • Tree-felling
  • Log rolling
  • Spring board chopping
  • Standing block chop
  • Chain-saw events

Rules and Regulations

For a safe and enjoyable park visit, all state park rules and regulations apply, including:

  • Campfires -- Open fires are prohibited. Grills are located in the picnic area at the pavilion. Traditional campsites with fire rings are located in the park campground across the road.
  • Pets -- Pets are prohibited in the Night Sky Public Viewing Area, Overnight Astronomy Observation Field, and Rustic Campground.
  • Alcohol -- Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks.
  • Green Lasers - - Green laser pointers are prohibited in the park at all times and for all reasons.
  • Food, Wildlife, and Trash  -- Food scraps invite scavengers, such as black bears, raccoons, opossums, and skunks. Store food in a vehicle to prevent damage to your equipment. Please wash dishes in a dish pan, then dispose of the water. No dishwashing is permitted in the restrooms or at the hydrants. Please place trash, accumulated during your stay, in the appropriate receptacles.

Cell Phones

Cherry Springs is very remote and most cell phones do not have network coverage. Currently, available providers are Verizon and T-mobile.

Dark Sky Fund/Association

The Cherry Springs Dark Sky Fund/Association is a “Friends” group under the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation .

Their mission is the protection of the dark night sky at Cherry Springs State Park and enhancing the astronomy experience through facility improvement and educational outreach programs.

Dark Sky Fund donations will be used to enhance the stargazing and astronomy experience at Cherry Springs State Park. Physical improvements to the park will help to eliminate any outside light pollution and remove overhead obstructions.

Donations will also be used to educate local residents and visitors about the value of the night sky resource and why it needs to be preserved.

Fund donations have been used to:

  • Plant light screening trees and shrubs
  • Convert all park lighting to shielded, red-light fixtures
  • Bury overhead electrical lines
  • Install electrical pedestals on the astronomy field

The fund also has provided educational materials about astronomy and environmentally friendly lighting in the park and surrounding communities.

Decisions about how the fund monies are spent are a collaborative effort of the park management and the Dark Sky Fund Advisory Council. The council is made up of astronomers from all over the country who regularly observe at Cherry Springs.

How to Donate

Donation forms and envelopes for the Cherry Springs Dark Sky Fund are available at the astronomy information bulletin board, located adjacent to the restroom on the Overnight Astronomy Observation Field and donations may be inserted into the Dark Sky Fund’s donation tube -- a square, blue fee tube located next to the astronomy information bulletin board.

Please do not combine park fees and donation fees. Use the separate forms and envelopes. Thanks for your support!

Access for People with Disabilities

This activity or structure is ADA accessible. If you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the park you plan to visit.

In an Emergency

Call 911 and contact a park employee. Potter County is a part of the 911 Emergency Service System. A free, local-use phone is located at the camper check-in station.

Directions to the nearest hospital are posted on bulletin boards.

CHERRY SPRINGS

Star gazing.

Truly a national treasure, it is the second international Dark Sky Park in USA and the only one on the east coast.

Believe it or not, only 10 percent of Americans have seen a true dark sky. Call it an unfortunate side effect of urban life or a necessary casualty of industrialization. Either way, the city lights have overtaken our view of the stars in many places in the U.S. But not here at Cherry Springs State Park near Coudersport, PA.

Our grandparents remember what dark skies looked like—and at cherry springs state park, you can experience the sky as they did. one of the top dark sky destinations in the world (and the “gold level dark sky park” designation from the international dark sky association to prove it), cherry springs presents skies for studying, gazing, or gaining a better understanding of our place in the universe..

Beautiful Stargazing at it’s finest…

About 60-85 nights a year lend themselves to ideal stargazing conditions in Cherry Springs. Depending on your luck and the degree of cloud cover, you may catch a glimpse of these:

  • Constellations
  • Venus (the Evening Star)
  • Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights)
  • Omega Nebula
  • Meteor Showers
  • Andromeda Galaxy
  • The Milky Way
  • Zodiacal Light
  • The Space Station
  • Other celestial bodies
  • Lunar Viewing like nothing else

Gather up a few items…

You don’t need much to enjoy “The Greatest Show on Earth” in Cherry Springs, but having these items on hand can help improve the experience:

  • Warm clothes/layers (even on summer nights, our mountain air can be brisk!)
  • A flashlight with red filter or cover (to protect your night vision)
  • Binoculars (7 x 50 power is recommended for stargazing, though 7 x 35 also works)
  • A blanket or camping chairs for comfy star-watching
  • A constellation guide or app for your device

The best times to visit:

The night sky can be frustratingly random. In the end, the stars, planets and clouds don’t really care very much about our stargazing wishes down here on Earth. But here are a few times when your viewing potential is better than others.

In Fall and Winter The stargazing field at Cherry Springs is open year-round (as are our Astro Cabins, which have their own private stargazing fields). But the best seasons to visit are fall and winter. It may be chillier then, but the lessened humidity and extended night-time hours create excellent stargazing opportunities.

In Spring and Summer Cherry Springs State Park comes alive in Spring and Summer with warmer temperatures and the new summer sky. The Milky Way comes alive every night. The evenings are times when memories are made, marriage proposals are brought forth and young and old gather to share once in a lifetime memories.

New Moon and Full Moon Lunar viewing is excellent from Cherry Springs Park. The best time to view the Full Moon may not be ideal for star gazing. Stars become more prominent as the New Dark Moon approaches. Regardless, we will show you many more stars than you have ever seen, weather permitting of course.

When skies are clear (of course) Check out the Cherry Springs Clear Sky Chart for up-to-date look at how the skies are shaping up for your visit. Look for dark blue squares in the row marked “Cloud Cover” — dark blue means clear skies for optimal viewing conditions.

During the Star Parties Another great time to visit is during the twice-yearly Star Parties held at Cherry Springs. Both events brings hundreds of professional astronomers to the area—and culminate in a public viewing event with high-powered telescopes and astronomy talks from experts. The first, the Cherry Springs Star Party, is held in June by the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg. The second, the Black Forest Star Party, happens in September, thanks to the Central Pennsylvania Observers.

The Coudersport Ice Mine: Pennsylvania’s Coolest Natural Oddity

Visiting-the-Coudersport-Ice-Mine-in-Sweden-Valley-PA

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Potter County is one of the oddest natural wonders in Pennsylvania: The Coudersport Ice Mine.

The ice mine was discovered by prospectors searching for silver in the mountains outside of Coudersport. After removing the moss along a promising hillside, the men were shocked to discover a layer of ice on this hot summer day.

Continuing to dig, they opened a shaft that was roughly 10×12 feet and had a depth of 25 feet. Inside, they found not only large pieces of ice, but also human remains, a petrified fish, and fossils.

No one knows exactly what causes the ice to form in this narrow area.

The mine is located on a hillside, shielded from the sun and wind. Ice begins to form in April and continues to build up as the weather warms. Then, starting in September, the ice begins to melt, with only a residual amount remaining during the winter months.

The entrance to the Coudersport Ice Mine in Potter County, Pennsylvania.

Many theories have been proposed over the years, but the most widely accepted is that cold air from the mountain flows out through the crevices around the ice mine as the air warms. This creates a very cold spot where ice can form during the summer months.

The Coudersport Ice Mine has been attracting tourists since it was found, bringing things to do in Coudersport, PA. Contrary to the name, the area was never mined for ice, though some locals did use it to store food from time to time. However, despite the unique nature of the site, it was closed to visitors in the late 1980s.

Fortunately, the Coudersport Ice Mine was purchased by new owners and opened again to the public in 2014.

The Coudersport Ice Mine

Today, visitors can learn the story of this curious natural feature and peer down into the ice mine from above.

Visits start in the visitor center, which features a variety of items related to the mine and the surrounding area. If you want a t-shirt that says “Potter County” on it, this is one of the few places you can pick one up.

The ice mine is located less than 25 feet from the ticket counter, which makes this a very easily accessible site for anyone to see.

Visiting the Coudersport Ice Mine in Pennsylvania

The mine itself is located behind a small building that serves as a viewing platform.

Guides lead you into this single room, which is significantly colder than the surrounding area. In here, there is little to see but a hole in the ground filled with ice.

While you, unfortunately, can’t go into the mine itself, the viewing platform and railings offer a variety of comfortable vantage points with which you can peer into the ice mine below.

The viewing area for the Coudersport Ice Mine in Potter County, PA.

During my visit on a hot and humid July afternoon, the buildup of ice was quite impressive. Large columns of ice were flanked by small icicles, and the entire bottom was covered with a thick layer of ice.

The very cool air coming out of the mine was quite refreshing on a hot day but was shockingly cold.

I’ve been to a lot of natural curiosities in Pennsylvania , and some unnatural ones like PA’s only geyser , but the Coudersport Ice Mine has to rank as one of the strangest. While it’s not the only natural ice mine in the world, it is the largest east of the Mississippi River and well-worth a stop if traveling along Route 6 in Potter County, Pennsylvania .

Note: My visit to the Coudersport Ice Mine was hosted by the site, but the opinions expressed are my own.
