CALAGUAS ISLAND: Budget Travel Guide + Itinerary And Why It’s Better Than Boracay

Boracay Island is considered as one of the best islands in the world and in a country with over 7500 islands to boot, it seemed to have taken the spotlight and has set quite the standard. If you haven’t noticed yet, we, Filipinos have gotten used to comparing other beaches to this world-famous island that Patar Beach in Pangasinan has since been dubbed as the “Boracay Of The North” and other beautiful beaches have similar nicknames as well. Indeed, Boracay has set the bar high that even the famous beaches of El Nido and Coron of the world’s number one island, Palawan have only come to a close second. Throughout the years, none has truly challenged Boracay until there was Calaguas Island.

Calaguas Island was once a hidden paradise known to only a few and the bravest of travelers. It is a backpackers’ haven and a mountaineers’ refuge. I was probably still naive and young when I first heard about it in 2009 coupled with rumors of how ethereal was its beauty. What caught my attention even more is that many people prefers this island over the more popular Boracay. I couldn’t help but ask why. It haunted me for several years until January of this year, I finally got my answer.

Note: If you would look up Calaguas Island on the map, it will show you a group of islands that is named Calaguas. The famed Mahabang Buhangin Beach is actually located in Tinaga Island, one of the main islands of Calaguas.

WHY I THINK CALAGUAS ISLAND IS BETTER THAN BORACAY

Boracay Island for the record still has the most beautiful beaches. Well, that’s according to me. But seriously! Where else in the Philippines will you see sands as fine as the ones in Boracay’s White Beach? Where else would you see water with the same shade of blue and as calm or as gorgeous as the ones on this island? If we are to say which is the “Most Beautiful” then I wouldn’t argue if someone would answer Boracay but I wouldn’t also rest my case about Calaguas having qualities that make it absolutely the better choice.

• Mahabang Buhangin has fine white sands, the closest thing to those of Boracay.
• The water in Mahabang Buhangin has a beautiful shade of blue and green and is so refreshing.
• The beach stretches to over 3KM of white powdery sands and pristine waters.
• The beach water stays clear and clean despite the season which means no “lumot” scare during the summer months.
• Mahabang Buhangin offers a more serene environment perfect for those looking for some peace and quiet.
• The island is hardly commercialized that only small, native open cottages stood near the beach instead of fancy hotels.
• It is less frequented by tourists and the beach is uncrowded.
• It is affordable and easy to get to.
• It offers a more stunning view atop one of its hills.
• More islands to explore if you would go on island hopping.
• Overall, the island is the ideal tropical paradise. The way Boracay was before it was ruined by widespread commercialism.

HOW TO GO TO CALAGUAS ISLAND

• Via Paracale – From Manila, ride a DLTB, Philtranco or Superlines bus to Daet (8-10hrs ; P769) . From Daet, ride another bus or jeep to Paracale (1hr ; P90) . Once in Paracale, ride a tricycle going to the port (15 min ; P15) . Charter a boat going to Mahabang Buhangin.
• Via Vinsonz – From Manila, ride a DLTB, Philtranco, or Superlines bus to Daet (8-10hrs ; P769) . From Daet, ride another bus or jeep to Vinzons  (1hr ; P90) . Once in Vinzons, ride a tricycle going to the port (15 min ; P15) . Charter a boat going to the island’s famed Mahabang Buhangin .

Note: Vinzons is the more popular of the two routes since it is much nearer and the travel time is less. However, boat costs are much cheaper in Paracale although travel time to the island is much longer.

IMPORTANT TRAVEL TIPS & INFO TO CALAGUAS ISLAND

• Open or day trip cottages on the island cost P300 while overnight cottages cost P500/night. It can fit up to 7-10 people. It comes with a table and space where you can prepare your meals. Bring your own padlock to secure your stuff while you are out exploring.
• Pitching of tents is free in parts other than the beachfront which requires a fee of P100/tent.
• Buy your essentials such as food and water prior to your travel. There are stores selling goods on the island but supply can be pretty limited.
• There is no electricity on the island but some areas are lit by power generators.
• There is clean spring water available which may be charged P10/bucket or P50 for unlimited use.
• There are toilets and bathrooms available and they are surprisingly clean and well-maintained.
• Aside from frolicking at the beach, another activity on the island and a must-try is trekking. The guide is not required but as a means of helping the local community, you may get one for a price of P50/person. You may also have to pay 3 environmental fees of P20 while passing by the trail going to the top of one of the hills overlooking the island.
• You can also go on an island hopping to see stunning rock formations and sandbars in the nearby islands for a price of P1000-P1500 a boat.
• In severe weather, the local coast guard may prohibit trips to the island so having a point of contact or a local tour coordinator who can give you timely updates is advisable.
• Please ensure to maintain cleanliness of the island. Dispose your trash properly. Avoid bringing in disposable plastics and paper containers.
• Refrain from making too much noise especially in the wee hours.

Hi. Depends on the size of the boat, price range from 5k up. Yes. There are parking spaces in both Paracale and Vinzons. I’m afraid wala ako contact sa mga transients dun. You can join Calaguas Travel group in Facebook. Maraming transient at boat operators ang kasali dun.

Yes. Just make sure to book your accommodation sa mga accredited homestays/campsite dun. Kasi you’ll need a pass which they or you should get prior to going to the island.

Hi Melchor. You can DIY. You can book directly sa mga transient instead of joining organized tour. You need advanced booking coz you need a Calaguas pass before going to the island.

How much the budget to say 1week in this island?

You won’t really need much especially if you’re going to camp there and cook your own food. Say maybe 4000 more or less.

Hi Jhon. I know nothing of a public boat going to Calaguas. Your best option is to go to the port in Paracale and ask some boat operators if you can join just the ride to and from the island. We actually have a couple joined us on our boat ride when we went there. I’m sure you can get yourself one too since it’s summer and lots of people are going to the island.

You can save if you would book a joiner tour. Just tell them that you’re bringing your car instead so that they would deduct the transpo from the total price. If you’re not into joining tours, I think one way that you can save is to rent a boat along with other passengers since the boat transfer is the priciest among the things that you need to go to Calaguas Island. Another budget-saving tip is to bring your provisions such as food, drinks, etc coz their prices are triple when you buy it from vendors on the island.

Hi Rose. October is one of the rainy months. You can always check the projected weather in the area prior to planning your date of travel. It’s also advisable to account for unfavorable circumstances such bad weather and unfriendly seas. 😊

Calaguas Travel Guide + Itinerary and Budget

When we hear Calaguas, what instantly comes to our mind is a long stretch of pristine beach with only few cottages that serve as temporary home for the city dwellers seeking to be away from everything. That’s how we see it, at least for us, considering that we were one of the first people who beheld its untouched beauty even before it rose to fame big time. As a matter of fact, on our first visit we had the whole beach all to ourselves as if we rented it for a couple of days, that was 2014.

Over the years, many things have changed. It’s not just about few cottages anymore (we went back on 2017). Many island resorts have popped up one by one, offering accommodations other than tents and cottages. But what amazes me is that eventhough it was being developed, its beauty and tranquility still remains. It still doesn’t fail to amaze us.

People who have been here even say that Mahabang Buhangin Beach in Calaguas can even rival Boracay beaches (which I couldn’t confirm as of now since I haven’t been to Boracay yet. Edit: We’ve been to already and here’s our verdict ). But what I can confirm is that everytime I set foot on its clean powdery white sands, I couldn’t say a thing. Although I’m pretty sure it’s one of the best islands in the Philippines .

Last April, we went back with hopes of experiencing both “uncrowded beach” and “calm ocean” at the same time. We have experienced both but in separate trips.

First visit: Uncrowded beach, but rough seas

We had a very terrible 5-hr boat ride due to LPA, I don’t know how we we were allowed to set sail (coast guards?), as mother ocean looked like she’s ready to swallow us alive. We haven’t swum yet but we already got wet, from head to toe, soaked to the skin! And we were just riding a small fishing boat, imagine that.

But the amazing part, we were greeted with pleasant weather while nearing the island. The sky was clear and the sun was happily shining as if nothing horrible happened lately. The ocean was still a little angry though, the waves were strong at the beach. But the beach, I can’t say anything bad about it.

The beach was almost empty of facilities. It was just all about the sands, ocean, trees, hills, few cottages, and makeshift comfort rooms. We just camped in our tents and immersed with nature.

Second visit: Calm ocean, but crowded beach

On our second visit, it was summer so the ocean was super calm and almost flat. In fact, our sea travel lasted a little more than 1 hour only. The timing wasn’t so good though, as it was holiday so the beach was super packed with vacationers. We did not enjoy swimming because of many boats docked on the shore. But despite being crowded and noisy, its beauty was still perfectly evident.

Third visit: Calm ocean + uncrowded beach = best beach trip ever!

To experience a calm ocean, we need to go during summer months. To achieve a crowdless beach, weekdays trip is the key. So we decided to go during summer and weekdays (Tue-Wed).

To say that this place is beautiful would be an understatement. No bias. I will not earn anything nor receive something in exchange for saying that. We’ve been to other top beaches too like El Nido Palawan , Panglao Bohol , Kalanggaman Leyte, Caramoan Camsur , etc. But Mahabang Buhangin Beach in Calaguas is still where I could see myself going back over and over again. I’m not saying that the other beaches aren’t beautiful, they just have their own kind of beauty.

To be honest, its beauty is something that cannot be captured fully by cameras. You need to experience it firsthand before you could understand why we’re going crazy about it.

Calaguas Travel Guide

Good to know.

Calaguas is a group of islands in the province of Camarines Norte. Note that it’s a group of islands, and there’s no such thing as “Calaguas Island”. It has 2 major islands namely, Tinaga and Guintinua islands, and several minor islands.

But when people say “Calaguas”, they are basically pertaining to Mahabang Buhangin Beach which is located in Tinaga island. Mahabang Buhangin is a long stretch of white sand beach (hence the name) that is now becoming more and more famous because of its unspoiled beauty.

How to get to this paradise?

Legend: Pink – Mahabang Buhangin Beach, Calaguas Black – Ports and terminals

There are basically two entry points to Calaguas: Paracale and Vinzons . Paracale Port to Calaguas: 1 to 2-hr boat ride Vinzons Port to Calaguas: 2 to 3-hr boat ride

How to get to Paracale/Vinzon’s?

Manila to Paracale (our route): Superlines in Cubao has direct trips to Paracale. Travel time is 10 hours . Bus schedule is 7:45PM daily. Fare is 599 php (regular aircon).

*Alternatively, you can use Cubao-Daet-Paracale route. It will be more hassle and longer travel time, but in case you missed the direct trips to Paracale, you would still have a back-up plan. There are lots of buses from Manila going to Daet like DLTB, Philtranco, Isarog, etc. And from Daet, there are buses and vans going to Paracale.

Manila to Vinzons: There are no bus lines that offer direct trips to Vinzons. So you will need to get to Daet first ( 10 hrs ) then ride a van/bus going to Vinzons ( 1hr ). There are lots of buses from Manila going to Daet.

You can book your transportation to Paracale via 12Go Asia .

Manila-Naga-Daet-Paracale From Manila, you can fly via Cebu Pacific Air or Philippine Airlines to Naga City Airport (1hr). From Naga, there are buses/vans going to Daet (3hrs). And from Daet, there are also buses/vans going to Paracale (1hr). Overall travel time: 5 hours (versus 10 hrs land travel)

Manila-Naga-Daet-Vinzons From Manila, you can fly via Cebu Pacific Air or Philippine Airlines to Naga City Airport (1hr). From Naga, there are buses/vans going to Daet (3hrs). And from Daet, there are also buses/vans going to Vinzon’s (1hr). Overall travel time: 5 hours (versus 11 hrs land travel)

You can also book your flight to Naga via 12Go Asia .

Of course, lesser travel time means higher cost. So it’s up to you now to choose what suits your budget and schedule.

So all in all, you will need to allot “at least” 12 hours travel time (if traveling by land), and 7 hours (if traveling by air) to reach the island, and you still need to add time allowance in case of unexpected mishaps. Which explains why this island paradise is only for those who are willing to go the “extra mile”.

In our case, we reserved our bus tickets at Superlines Cubao in advance. The bus was so clean because it’s Superlines ( korni ). Our bus was scheduled to depart at 7:45pm and we arrived at Paracale around 6am. It was a butt-numbing 10-hr bus ride. The jump-off point is at Paracale Terminal and from there, we chartered a tricycle to bring us to house of our boatman, Mang Boy (we contacted him beforehand). We just told the tricycle driver to take us to Mang Boy’s house (yes he’s famous) and paid 20 each for the ride. From Paracale Port, we sailed for 1hr+ (it was summer) to Calaguas.

Sample Breakdown of Expenses

• Food budget varies with people. You may add or reduce according to your preference.

Here are market prices as of our visit last April 2019:

Chicken = 150/kilo (we bought 100 worth, good for the two of us) Pork = 200/kilo (we bought 100 worth, good for the two of us) Bangus = 180/kilo (we didn’t buy) Rice = 40/kilo (we bought 1kg, more than enough for two of us) Salted egg ( itlog na pula/maalat )= 10/pc (we bought 4) Charcoal = 10/pack (we bought 2)

Other cooking necessities: marinade, calamansi, salt, tomatoes, soy sauce

• Boat transfers (with life vests, kitchen utensils rental, and island hopping) is 500/person, joiner rate. Meaning, you will be joined with other tourists in one boat that is 25pax capacity. But if you want an exclusive boat, you can rent one for 3,500 good for 6 persons.

Island hopping tour will be held the next day (if 2D1N), or on the returning date (if staying more than 2days), as the islands and snorkeling sites are just on the way back to Paracale. There’s a public shower area with many shower cubicles at Paracale mainland (25/person) where you could wash-up after the island hopping tour .

Please contact Mang Boy in advance so he can properly reserve your slot. Also, contact him again the day before your arrival date to confirm you’re going.

But if you’re not a fan of camping in tents, you may avail other types of accommodations from resorts around Mahabang Buhangin Beach.

Tip when going back to Manila: Superlines bus schedule Paracale-Cubao route is 6:30 PM daily. We arrived at Paracale Terminal around 3PM but they are already fully-booked. Best thing to do is to reserve your seats upon arrival at Paracale on your day 1.

The magic of calaguas.

Calaguas, also known as Calaguas Islands, is a group of islands. It includes the larger and most popular Tinaga Island, which is the island you will be staying on.

The recent popularity of Calaguas Island is bringing in more travelers, especially during the summer.

It is a long journey to reach the island though. Up to 15 hours if you travel by land and sea from Manila! But once you pull up to the beach, you will instantly feel that the trip was well worth it.

What struck me most was the color of the water . The aqua-colored glow radiates under the sun in a way that I have not seen before.

Yes, other popular islands flaunt the same thing. But not like this.

As impressive as a photo looks you just have to see it for yourself to fully appreciate the strength of the colors.

The water is amazingly clean and clear.

To illustrate the point, I lost my hat at one point and did not realize that it had been washed into the water by a rising tide. It was only the clarity of the water that allowed me to find it.

A quick scan of the water and I could see this blue hat on the seafloor quite easily – even though it was at least 10-15 meters away.

Activities on Calaguas Island

While there are things you can do to explore the island and keep yourself occupied, you should expect a very quiet itinerary.

A routine of swimming, laying on the beach, eating, swimming again, etc. will sum up most of your day… and that sounds pretty damn good to me.

1. Snorkeling

The water is crystal clear and the tides are very mild.

You’ll be camping on the beach called Mahabang Buhangin. If you walk to the end of this beach and follow the rocks towards the headlands you will see all kinds of bright colored fish swimming around.

It gets deep fairly quickly so if you are confident in the water you will be able to explore the depths freely.

If you are not a strong swimmer then most of the tour groups have life jackets available. You can float around without much effort and still enjoy the beautiful underwater spectacle.

Late in the day when the temperatures start to fall, there is a popular walk up to the hills overlooking the beach.

It is a nice and easy walk up a gentle incline.

Buy a coconut from the locals to take with you for just a few pesos. They are refreshing and tasty!

3. Beach Volleyball

There are nets set up on the beach and balls are also available on the island.

If you are with a few friends it’s a fun way to kill some time and get some exercise.

When was the last time you threw a Frisbee around? This was surprisingly fun and we kept this up for at least an hour.

The calm and shallow water makes diving around easy and can make for some good photo opportunities.

5. Island Hopping

Calaguas’ main island Tinaga is part of a cluster of islands that are completely deserted.

There is no set commercial offering of island hopping tours , but there are locals willing to take you around on a private boat.

If you can find someone to take you out you will have to negotiate on a price for the day out. This is likely to cost somewhere around PHP 1,500.

Should You Book a Calaguas Island Tour or DIY

This is one experience where you will not miss out on anything by just getting on a tour.

The packages are cheap and take care of all of the basics like tent accommodation, and food (which is excellent!).

Yeah you can DIY, but that means lugging a tent, food, and cooking utensils around which would be more of an inconvenience to carry around for the rest of your trip.

Prices generally range from PHP 2,799 to PHP 3,999 for a one or two-night stay.

If you wish to stay longer than that you will have to negotiate with your tour operator or DIY.

Booking a Calaguas Island tour gives you the comfort of a fixed cost with no surprises from a local trying to overcharge you for transport.

Calaguas Island Tours are inclusive of:

• Meals (which are good quality)
• Boat and environmental fees
• Tent and beach hut access
• Snorkeling gear, volleyball, and frisbee use

Some tours will also include the round-trip bus ticket from Manila to Daet. This gives you the chance to make a few new friends before jumping on the boat.

When booking your tour online you will not be able to pay via credit card like with most modern travel sites. You will complete an online inquiry form and then have some email back & forth to confirm details and organize payment.

This will vary by tour operator but is likely to involve:

• Making a cash deposit into a local bank account
• Cash on arrival at the bus terminal

When choosing your tour operator you’ll find that all booking services funnel customers into the same tour, with the same itinerary, and accommodation options.

I would encourage you to make inquiries with a number of operators and deal with whoever you find the most responsive, and easiest to communicate with.

DIY Accommodation

The majority of visitors will pitch a tent in one of the camping grounds along the beachfront.

You will need to pay a fee on arrival of PHP 100 for your tent space. This will get you a patch of grass, and that’s about it.

Facilities are limited to a basic toilet and bathroom that will vary in quality depending on which camping ground you stay at.

Showers are non-existent and instead you will have to purchase a bucket of water for PHP 10 per bucket. But this does the job just fine.

Remember this is a virgin island with virtually no plumbing or permanent structures.

However, you can rent a beach hut overnight if camping in the Philippines isn’t what you were looking for . The price for these huts starts at PHP 500 a night and unless you arrange this through your tour operator you will have to seek availability on arrival.

There are only a handful of these huts so best not to rely on them. Your hut will have two beds, and a small table.

There is also a small resort on Mahabang Buhangin Beach called Calaguas White Sand Resort. But, Calaguas Island is definitely developing so the longer you wait the more tourism facilities the island will probably have…

How to Get to Calaguas Island

Unfortunately there is no easy way to get to the island. You are looking at three to four legs no matter what your preferred method is.

1. By Land (approx. 12-15 hours)

• Bus: Manila -> Daet – 9 Hours (PHP 800 – PHP 900)
• Jeepney: Daet -> Minaogan Port – 30 minutes (around PHP 20)
• Boat: Minaogan Port -> Calaguas – 2 hours

When you factor in all of the waiting time between legs you are looking at a minimum of 12 hours to reach the island.

Bus (Manila to Daet)

The most frequent service runs from the Superlines terminal in Cubao. They offer multiple class options for the journey and I would recommend the air-conditioned bus, or higher.

Expect plenty of bumps and windy roads on the overnight bus trip . This will make it difficult to sleep but is pretty standard for Philippines roads.

A first-class bus will not cost much more and will give you the best chance of getting some sleep!

If you have a larger group you could also hire a private van.

Jeepney (Daet to Minaogan Port)

The ride should only cost around PHP 20 and take about 30 minutes.

Frequency and routes can be unpredictable so just ask someone at the bus station for confirmation of the best pickup point.

Note: You can also reach the island from Paracle. This is a two-hour drive from Daet and can be reached by a van that will also leave from the terminal area.

Boat (Minaogan Port to Calaguas)

It is a long trip and the hard wooden seating can be uncomfortable. So you may want to have a pillow handy to prevent your butt from getting numb.

As you get further away from the mainland you will notice the water becomes clearer and bluer. Watching that transition will help holiday mode set in after what would have been a testing journey at times.

Pro tip: If you sit at the front of the boat you will get wet so be wary of any electronics you may have with you.

Note that there is no set schedule for the boats. If you choose to DIY your trip to Calaguas Island you will have to ask around when you arrive at the port.  Arrive early to ensure you do not miss the tour groups heading to the island, and try and organize your return journey at the same time so you have a way to get back to the mainland.

2. By Air (approx. 7-9 hours)

The advantage of taking a flight is that you won’t need to take that overnight bus ride and arrive on limited sleep.

It will save you some time, but perhaps not enough to warrant the additional cost for some.

The closest airport to Daet is Naga Airport which is only a 45-minute flight from Manila, and then a two-hour journey to Daet.

A return flight costs anywhere from PHP 4,000 to PHP 12,000 depending on when you book.

For the sake of saving a couple of hours, in my opinion it’s not a recommended option.

When to Visit Calaguas Island

Rainy season in the Philippines runs from August to November.

With limited shelter and the tent accommodation, I would not recommend visiting during this time. It is also when typhoons are most frequent.

Given how isolated the island is and the size & strength of the boats it would be an all-around bad situation.

December and January can still bring big waves because of the trade winds and can, therefore, make it unsafe to travel.

From February to July you will be met with fairly consistent sunny weather and warm ocean temperatures.

Local Holidays to Avoid

I would avoid Calaguas on any long weekend that falls in the summer months.

There are no controls on tourist numbers on the island. As a result, the place can get transformed overnight from an island paradise to a crowded campsite with insufficient facilities.

This is exactly what you come here to avoid.

The Holy Week holiday (Easter) is the peak weekend for tourist numbers so avoid this at all costs . The dates will change each year so check your calendar when planning.

Final Word About Calaguas Island

This video, although a few years old, gives a good impression of what Calaguas is like and what the locals do to keep it as pristine as possible (the video has English subtitles).

The Philippines is blessed with thousands of stunning islands and beaches . But many of the more popular destinations have succumbed to mismanagement and have become a shadow of their former selves.

As an example, Boracay Island had to close to tourists  for most of 2018 and there is talk of the same treatment being applied to Baguio in the north.

Calaguas Island is one of the few remaining spots that are relatively untouched, but also accessible to tourists. It’s the Philippines off the beaten track.

But this is also changing fast so I would encourage you to visit as soon as you can.

Calaguas Island Guide: The Way to a Paradise (Travel Story & Tips)

 “Where is Calaguas island?”

I remember my girlfriend, Eloi, asked me when I suggested it on our next trip. It was also the same reaction I got from friends after my travel. Honestly, I am amazed at how many people are still unaware of this paradise.

So in a way, I felt obliged to tell you how beautiful it is, to convince you to visit this island. The journey going there might be uncomfortable to some, but as you get there, everything will be worth it.

Calaguas is a secluded group of islands in Camarines Norte , Philippines.

Over the past years, it has been getting rave reviews from bloggers and travelers because of its beauty and serenity – its crystal clear water and powdery white beach. Some are saying, it is as beautiful as Boracay but definitely more peaceful, unspoiled, and still uncommercialized.

We planned this trip months ago, but just a few days before the travel something happened. Too much drama and negativity suddenly surrounded me. It was too intense that no matter how much I shrugged it off, it just wouldn’t let me go. Yes, it is painful when somebody hurts you, but it is something when a supposed friend concocted an imaginative story to deliberately hurt you.

Eloi advised me to let it go and just be calm about it, which I did. That was one of those moments when I realized I should choose my battles, and that one was a complete waste of time. I was contemplating giving up a person or maybe people in my life, and the trip to Calaguas was just the right time for me to find some clarity.

How to get to Calaguas

Our journey to Calaguas started at the DLTB Bus station in Cubao. The bus schedule was 9 PM. We availed a tour package from Calaguas Hullabaloo for 3D2N, so when we arrived at the terminal, we just presented our booking confirmation. Then after a few minutes, we were informed of our bus number and we were ready to board.

The travel time to Daet is approximately 8 hours, so be prepared for a long ride. There were 3 bus stops, and the bus was quite comfortable, enough to give you a sleep while traveling. But there were times when the swerving roads of Quezon province would become unbearable, like a roller coaster ride to wake you up in your slumber.

It was 6 in the morning when we arrived in Daet, the capital of Camarines Norte.

If you are on a DIY (Do It Yourself) travel . From Daet, just catch a jeepney going to Vinzons for Php 12. In Vinzons town proper, there are two fish ports where you can hire a motorboat going to Calaguas’ main beach which is Mahabang Buhangin or as the locals call it, Halabang Baybay . These fish ports are Doongan and Hagdang bato . In these ports, you can rent a motorboat for Php 2500 to 3000 for six people. If there are a lot of travelers going to Calaguas, you might be lucky to get a big boat that charges 200 per person.

But since we availed a tour package from Calaguas Hullabaloo, our travel was a bit different and more comfortable. We stayed in a hotel in Daet for a few minutes to have our breakfast, then the same bus brought us to Vinzons. And then a very accommodating staff by the name of Steve guided us for another jeepney ride to the port.

Then we embarked on another two-hour boat ride going to Calaguas.

The waves were calmer during summer, but according to some travelers who have been to Calaguas many times, the waves can be unforgiving during rainy seasons until January. So it is important to plan your travels very well.

Just like our fellow travelers, Eloi and I quickly fell asleep. Who could resist the relaxing wind and the soft sway of the boat?

After waiting like forever, we have finally seen some group of islands. It was a sign that Calaguas was just a few minutes away.

Then a few more moments, the motorboat finally made its turn to this island. Its white beach was noticeable. Everyone felt the same excitement.

As the boat came nearer the shore, I just couldn’t help myself but say, “Wow!”

We were welcomed by clear turquoise water, we could almost see the small fishes swimming. And of course, the best part was the powdery white sand!

When we got off the boat. I saw Eloi smiling with kilig , she said,  “ ang ganda dito!” (beautiful!).

Our Calagauas Experience

When the rest were ready to go to their tents and cottages to temporarily escape the heat of the sun, we enjoyed the place and took some photos. We were just happy to lay our eyes on this beautiful paradise.

Eloi was ecstatic as a kid when she asked me to take more pictures of her. Seeing her smile was enough for me to be happy. And surprisingly, the worries that had been lingering on me for days were all gone. I was just happy, ready to let go of the negativity. In an instant, Calaguas calmed me.

Oh beautiful

This long stretch of white sand beach is called Mahabang Buhangin located in the Tinaga Island, considered as the main attraction in Calaguas.

The best thing about this beach, it is secluded and still unspoiled. No connection and mobile phone signal, so people actually interact, talk and bond. If you’re looking for a place to just unplug from the city life, well Calaguas is definitely for you. It has this majestic appeal that leaves you breathless by its beauty.

When we got back to the camp and looked for our assigned tent, Eloi and I relaxed on a cottage. There, we met another sweet couple, Omie and Allen. Our conversations started with simple hello’s then before we knew it we were already sharing our stories. This is one of the best things about traveling, meeting new people who would turn out to be good friends.

Our small group became bigger and merrier when we were joined by four friends namely Gen, Aldrin, Joey, and Arthur. They were just a happy bunch of people. Being with them was just crazy! When I think about these people all I remember were just laughter and fun. Of course, we were also able to talk about our future travels. Yes, we are going to travel more. 🙂

While chatting, one of the staff approached us and told us something we all had been waiting for. It was lunchtime!

One good thing about availing of a packaged tour like Calaguas Hullabaloo, you don’t need to worry about your food (buffet!), transportation, tents, etc they will all handle it for you. As to the Hullabaloo team, we were satisfied with their service. People were friendly. The food was just great especially the Bicolano dishes like Laing and ginataang santol. Oh man, they were just del…licious!

There are a lot of activities and adventures that you can enjoy in Calaguas. You can avail the island hopping which I will create a separate and more detailed post. Calaguas is a group of islands, so aside from Mahabang Buhangin, there are still other gems and beauties to enjoy from other islets.

If there is an improvement in Calaguas that is not yet updated in other blogs it’s the fact that you can now find a store (yes a sari-sari store!) along Mahabang Buhangin with products at a very hefty price. So it is still recommended that you buy all your toiletries, snacks, and other necessities before going to the island. Calaguas also has several toilets, enough to serve all the travelers. The water supply comes from pumps.

After our lunch, we’ve found ourselves sitting in the cottage again.

We could feel the scorching heat of the sun, but the beach was inviting us. Most Filipinos are indeed very conscious about their complexion, afraid to get some darker skin. But Calaguas is an exemption. Calaguas is worth it! So when Eloi asked me to go to the beach, I didn’t take no for an answer. Let’s get it on!

Whew! look at that water!

In our three-day stay in Calaguas, we’ve also enjoyed our siesta time. I don’t know but the beach will just turn you so sleepy right after lunch LOL! So who are we to resist? We had all the luxuries to oblige.

I woke up one afternoon in the cottage and saw Eloi looking at me. “Anlakas ng hilik mo!” ( you were snoring like hell!) then fondly laugh at me. I just smiled and told myself, “well, this is life.”

Before sunset, Eloi and I walked along the long stretch of white sand. While enjoying this moment with her, she gently told me that it was our best travel so far.

I am amazed at how Calaguas has rekindled my happiness. How it has reminded me to be calm and focus on what really matters in life.

Meeting new friends in Calaguas has made me realize there is a reason why I added these people in my life, and there’s also a reason why sometimes we need to let go of some. And it’s okay. It is okay.

As we walked towards this beautiful beach, I noticed some Asian-inspired cottages. These are the only structures, the first resort has been built on the island.

I wondered what will happen to Calaguas after a few more years? Will there be more structures? Buildings perhaps?

All I know is if you’re expecting Calaguas to be a serene and breath-taking paradise, the best time to visit is NOW… before it gets too popular, too crowded…too commercialized.

Calaguas Island Hopping

One of the best things about Calaguas is experienced in the morning. Imagine waking up in this paradise – white sand and clear blue water. And then you’re with your beloved one. Yiihiii!

We had our breakfast first and told our guide that we were going to avail of the island tour for an additional fee. Rates are 2,500 Php with a maximum number of 15 people.  Mahabang Buhangin is the main island/beach in Calaguas. It is 1.7 km. long stretch of powdery white sand with its pristine water, best enjoyed through beach bumming and swimming. This is where the travelers’ camp.

Calaguas is definitely one of the best beaches in the Philippines . But I discovered that more than its white sand and clear water, being a group of islands, Calaguas offers more that can be experienced by exploring its other islets.

Together with our newfound friends who later turned into travel buddies, we embarked on a short 20-minute boat ride going to our first stop, Balagbag Maliit island.

Balagbag Maliit suits its name. It’s an islet, so tiny that you could explore its entirety in minutes. Its main spot is the rock formations that you can climb up to get a nice view of the island.

In the middle of these rock formations, there are these natural swimming pools inviting you to take a dip. The water is unbelievably clear.

And looking beyond the natural swimming pools is another island named Balagbag Malaki, the big brother of Balagbag Maliit. LOL!

Balagbag Malaki, an island perfect for hikers and beach lovers alike. It has a wide white sand shore, but the main attraction can be experienced through a little hiking to this small mountain covered by dramatic landscape and grass.

Only one family is living on the island as caretakers, a small amount of 20 pesos is collected for every visitor. Balagbag Malaki a different version of Mahabang Buhangin. Still possess this captivating white sand but with a little rough landscape. Hiking is a nice way to have a quick exercise after days of beach bumming.

On the highest point is a perfect view of the sea and the nearby islands. The sea breeze with grasses and its rugged terrain is perfect for any kind of photo ops. You can do a usual barkada shot or have some captivating nature photography.

Of course, hiking can be tiring at times. So we need a perfect island suitable for swimming to beat the summer heat. Our next destination was like a small version of Mahabang Buhangin – powdery white sand and clear blue water. And the best part of the story is, there are no other people on the island except us! Our guide Steve said that this is Pinagtakpan Island.

Approaching Pinagtakpan, I had the same feeling of excitement when we arrived at Mahabang Buhangin, The little hiking from our previous island made us clamor for a refreshing swim. Well, Pinagtakpan didn’t fail us. Just look at how much we enjoyed the beach.

Before we head back to the main island, our guide brought us to the middle of the sea for some snorkeling experience. The corals underwater are not that stunning like the ones of Anilao, but swimming beside the boat in the middle of the sea is something I consider enjoyable.

And did I mention, we went back to the main island sitting on the boat’s outrigger( katig ) to experience another thrill of adventure?

Wow! nice blog. I have a question , we are planing to visit this breathtaking paradise of CamSur though we have a minimal problem since we will be travelling to CamSur after shift that’s 8:00 am. I know that the estimated time of travel would be 8-12 hrs so we may roughly reach the place afternoon or worst comes to worst evening . Calaguas Island: Visit a Stunning Island Paradise

The Philippines is blessed with thousands of stunning islands and beaches. Unfortunately, many of them have been overrun by commercialism and the natural beauty is a shadow of its former self. 

Calaguas Island remains relatively untouched and close to its original natural state. It also has the most stunning water and beachfront that I have seen anywhere in the world. 

While the pictures below show you the glowing blue water through the lens of a camera, nothing will prepare you for the real thing. And that alone is worth the many, many hours that it will take you to reach this remote island paradise.  

For the majority of the year, this destination remains pristine, unspoiled, and one of the most stunning islands to visit in the Philippines . 

But this is also changing as the island grows in popularity.

Virgin Island No More

While people still refer to Calaguas as a Virgin Island, in reality, it gets further from this status every year. 

It remains mostly undeveloped but there is now a resort at the beachfront, plus a handful of older beach huts. 

Every year there seems to be more of them and it is only a matter of time until more serious structures are erected. So I wanted to start off this article by saying that if you are considering going to do it as soon as you can! 

Having said this, it is still one of the more authentic opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the Philippines.

Calaguas Island Activities

I thought it was important to get you excited about visiting the island before we tell you how hard it is to get there. 

It is not an action packed place. It is slow, lazy, and a great place to get away from your everyday distractions like your cell phone/TV and live a simple life…. Even if it’s only for 24 hours. 

Almost everything revolves around the stunning beach. You will not find clearer blue water anywhere else in the Philippines, or the world for that matter.

It is worth the trip alone and you could easily just spend your time there swimming, eating, and laying on the beach. 

But there are a few other things available if you want. 

1. Snorkeling

Make the most of that crystal clear water and do some exploring along the rocky headlands. You will see all kinds of bright colored fish swimming around.

The currents are friendly and the water very warm. So it is a nice easy place to swim. If you are not a strong swimmer then the tour operators will have life jackets available so you can just float along and still enjoy the beautiful underwater spectacle.

The surrounding hills are only a light walk but the view you get is still impressive given the island is very small. 

Sunset and sunrise are the stars of the show here. Both also happen at the time of day that isn’t uncomfortably hot to be hiking out in the open. 

You will usually find a local selling coconuts ( buko ) for just a few pesos. They are both refreshing and tasty!

3. Beach Volleyball

There are nets set up along the beach and free for you to use. 

If you have a small group of people it is a lot of fun and a good way to get active if you have been lazing about on the beach all day. 

The calm and shallow water was the perfect place to jump around trying to catch a falling frisbee. 

It is not something I had done since I was a kid and this kept us entertained for longer than I thought it would. 

It is also a great opportunity to get some amusing photos. 

5. Sand Boarding

I usually associate this activity with fail videos on Youtube. I had a go but it is surprisingly exhausting! 

I grew tired of it quickly, but some younger and more skilled companions were at this for hours and seemed to glide effortlessly onto the small waves lapping the shore. 

6. Island Hopping

Calaguas is actually the name of a small cluster of islands with Tinaga being the main island that you visit. 

You will not find any commercial tour operators on the island but can just approach locals with a boat to see if they will take you for a negotiated price (likely to be 1,000-1,500 PHP).

The one thing that all of the surrounding islands have in common is that you will be the only ones standing on them. All are uninhibited and just as beautiful. 

7. Fire Dancing

At night time fire dancers will walk  up and down the beach doing shows for the various groups of campers, and tour groups. 

This is common at most island destinations that are popular with tourists in the Philippines but there will not be much else going on at night.

So enjoy the show, and feel free to tip the performers. 

How to Get to Calaguas Island

Now before you get too carried away with excitement you should be aware of where the island is and the journey you will be required to take to get there. 

Flying to the nearest airport will save you some time but you will still need to put in many hours no matter where you are coming from.

But, I promise you that it is worth it!

By Air (7-9 Hours)

• Plane: Manila -> Naga (45 Min + check in time) 4k-12k PHP
• Van: Naga -> Daet (2 Hours) 200 PHP
• Jeepney: Daet -> Minaogan Port – 30 minutes (PHP 10 – PHP 20)
• Boat: Minaogan Port -> Calaguas (2 hours) 

The route is serviced by Cebu Pacific, but check for any other available flights and just book the cheapest one. All domestic airlines in the Philippines are equally unreliable so just book whatever suits your plans and budget best.

The advantage of taking a flight is that you can leave and arrive on the same day. Overnight buses or vans make it very hard to sleep and anything you can do to arrive fresher is worthwhile in my opinion. 

A return flight costs anywhere from PHP 4,000 to PHP 12,000 depending on when you book.

The downside is that even after you land in Naga you still have multiple legs before you step foot on the beach. 

Van (Naga to Daet)

There are usually plenty of vans available outside the arrivals area at the airport. 

They can get very cramped if it is busy and can be uncomfortable. So try and get a window seat so you at least have your own little corner. 

Jeepney (Daet to Minaogan Port)

If you are on an organized tour this is the pickup point and your guides will take care of things from here – but the methods of transportation are all the same. 

If you DIY (not recommended!), the ride should only cost PHP 10-20 and take about 30 minutes.

Frequency and routes can be unpredictable so just ask someone at the bus station for confirmation of the best pickup point.

Boat (Minaogan Port to Calaguas)

If you are DIY’ing you may have to ask around to find the correct boat. You will also find there is no set schedule – one of many reasons to just get on a tour. 

It is best to arrive at the port early in the morning to ensure you do not miss the boats heading to the island. It is also best to organize your return journey at the same time so you have a way to get back (just get a tour!).

The boat is fairly small and won’t be the most comfortable ride. My best advice is to put on some music, try and get comfortable, and tune out for the first 90 minutes of the trip. 

By then your butt will be numb and sitting will be uncomfortable. So get up and take a look around at the clear blue water that surrounds you. 

As you start to see the surrounding islands you will notice the turquoise water jumping out at you from a distance. You will go past many of these teaser beaches before you arrive at your final destination. 

But this final stretch will help you transition from tired commuter to a relaxed holiday mode. And nothing will beat that feeling when the boat turns into that shoreline. 

By Road (Up to 12-15 hours)

• Bus: Manila -> Daet – 9 Hours (PHP 650 – PHP 720)
• Boat: Minaogan Port -> Calaguas – 2 hours

From Manila, the most frequent service runs from the Superlines terminal in Cubao. They offer multiple class options for the journey and I would recommend the air-conditioned bus, or higher.

Expect plenty of bumps and windy roads on the overnight bus trip. It is very hard to sleep which is why I recommend you just fly. 

A first-class bus will not cost much more and will give you the best chance of getting some sleep!

If you have a larger group you can also hire a private van for PHP 15K-30K depending on your length of stay. This moves faster than a bus but is even harder to sleep on due to the windy roads. 

The Jeepney and boat legs are the same as what we have already covered above. 

Organized Tour or DIY

Calaguas tours.

You already know my position on this – just get on a tour. They are cheap, easy, and you get to travel with a group. 

The value is excellent with your tent accommodation (upgrade to a hut if you want), and food (which is excellent!), and transport all taken care of. 

Prices generally range from PHP 1,799 to PHP 2,999 for a one or two-night stay. Which is around $50-$70.

Yeah you can DIY, but that means lugging a tent, food, and cooking utensils around. Plus navigating all the travel can be challenging. 

Booking a Calaguas Island tour gives you the comfort of a fixed cost with no surprises from a local trying to overcharge you for transport.

Most Calaguas tours will include the following:

• Meals (which were high quality)
• Boat and environmental fees
• Tent and beach hut access
• Snorkeling gear, volleyball, and frisbee use

Some tours will also include the round-trip bus ticket from Manila to Daet. This gives you the chance to make a few new friends before jumping on the boat.

When booking your tour online you will not be able to pay via credit card like with most modern travel sites. You will complete an online inquiry form and then have some email back & forth to confirm details and organize payment.

DIY Accommodation

As mentioned at the top of the article, there is now a basic resort built on the island which has a small number of cottages and fixed glamping tents that are a cut above the regular camping options. 

You can organize this in advance and have a bit more comfort than what was available in the past. 

However, most people just camp. There is a 100 PHP fee for your tent space – but that just gets you a patch of grass.

Facilities are limited to a basic toilet (usually no toilet seat or running water) and bathroom that will vary in quality depending on which camping ground you stay at.

Showers are non-existent and you will have to purchase a bucket of water instead for PHP 10 per bucket. But this does the job just fine.

Best Time to Visit Calaguas Island

• Nov to Feb – Mild weather, less predictable seas. 
• Mar to July – Perfect!
• Aug to Nov – Typhoon Season (avoid!).

The weather is mild from around November to February but the sea conditions can be less predictable. February to July is more stable and you will get amazing weather throughout this period. 

However, I would strongly discourage you from visiting whenever there is a long weekend of any kind. 

Holy Week (from Easter Thursday) especially sees the tourist numbers explode! This really defeats the purpose of coming to Calaguas if it is crowded so avoid these dates and you will have a much more enjoyable experience. 

August through to November is typhoon season. Not the best time to visit isolated virgin islands as you will get regular rain and the occasional typhoon that could see you stuck for days. 

Calaguas Island is one of the few remaining spots that are accessible to tourists but remains fairly untouched. 

But this is changing fast! So visit as soon as you can. 

Don’t let the arduous journey turn you off going. It will be worth it and you will be living the closest thing to deserted island life that you may ever get to experience. 

I guarantee that you will remember that glorious aqua-colored glow under the bright sun more than the uncomfortable boat seats.

Camarines Norte is a prime tourist destination because it offers a lot to visitors, whether they want to laze on the beach or ride the waves. One of the must-visit places of the region is Calaguas. Due to its rising popularity, it is experiencing an uptick in visitors and growth in commerce. It is a good place to visit because of its fine, white-sand beach, relative seclusion, cerulean waters, and great overlooking views.

How to Get There

Nearest Airport: Naga Airport (Camarines Sur)

• If you plan to fly, there are flights from Manila to Naga.
• Once in Naga, you can board a van bound for Daet in Camarines Norte; the trip will take around two to three hours.
• Once in Daet, get on a public van bound for the town of Paracale; the trip takes approximately two hours one way. Paracale is the popular entry point to the islands of Calaguas.
• After arriving, look for the fish port and look for boats bound for Mahabang Buhangin; boat rentals cost around P3000. If you’re on a budget, bring friends along to split the costs or look for a bigger group to join in.
• For those who want to go on a budget and couldn’t get discounted airfares for the dates they want, they can travel by land, then by boat to Calaguas.
• There are buses from Manila to Daet.
• Once in Daet, board a van bound for Paracale; from there, head to the fish port to look for boats traveling to Mahabang Buhangin.

Entrance Fee and Other Charges

• Entrance Fee: It depends on where you choose to go and stay on the island. Some areas have no entrance fee.
• Camping Fee: It depends on the resort. Some of them allow camping, some don’t.
• Cottage Rental Fee: Rates vary from one resort to another.

Don’t Miss

• Swim in the turquoise waters or simply laze on the beach while in Calaguas. The sand is fine and the waters calm enough for wading in or simply dousing the heat of summer.
• You can also play beach volleyball or Ultimate Frisbee while on the island.
• Go on a short trek up the hill to get an overlooking view of the cove.
• The island is also one of the best places to see the sunset or sunrise because there are no man-made obstructions to the view.

Don’t Forget

• Bring cash with you. Once you leave Naga or Daet, you’ll have a difficult time withdrawing money, if ever you need extra cash to pay for boat rentals, transportation, and food while on the island.
• As the cliché goes, leave only footprints, memories, broken hearts, and photos behind.
• Bring battery packs or fully charge devices as charging these will be difficult to impossible to do while on the beach.

If You Have More Time and Budget

• You can go island hopping during your trip; the group of islands has a handful of other white-sand beaches to explore.
• When you leave Calaguas, there are other places to discover such as the Mercedes Group of Islands in the same province.
• Check out Pulang Daga Beach while in Paracale or go surfing (during the right season) in Bagasbas.
• While in Daet, spend time exploring the Provincial Capitol of Camarines Norte, visiting Museo Bulawan, and taking a picture of the Rizal Monument.
• While in Naga, hike up Mt. Isarog to get good overlooking views of the surroundings. After which, eat delicious Bicolano dishes.

Calaguas: Paradise on a Budget! (A DIY Guide)

Are you contemplating on a perfect summer getaway but being held back by your tight budget? Do you prefer the quiet and laid back beach experience over the beach parties and active night life? Are you into adventure and want an unforgettable one?

If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, then Calaguas is for you.

It is true. With less than two thousand bucks, you can have your ultimate island experience in the hidden paradise of Calaguas. Calaguas is a group of islands in the northern Camarines Norte consisting of unspoiled islands decorated with fine white sand – a picture perfect paradise that promises everyone their best beach experience.

The P2000 Challenge

With me were my travel friends Donna, Jonah, Ems, FM and Jill with her plus BJ, and my virtual friend Rina with her officemate Ruby.

Our initial plan was to avail of the service of an outfitter, but they were charging us P1800 per person from Daet. Jill brought up the idea of a doable P2000 budget to Calaguas. The challenge was to explore the cheapest and alternative route since Vinzons route (the common jump off point to the islands) is getting expensive nowadays due to influx of tourists taking that route. It is a simple economics: higher demand = higher price.

Since we were all game for an adventure and we all want to explore the different route of going there, we decided to take the Paracale route instead of Vinzons.

Manila to Talobatib

We met at Philtranco Terminal in Pasay for our 9PM trip. We reserved our seats earlier via Amihan bus bound to Daet at P580.00 each. The bus left at 9:30PM and we asked the driver to drop us at Talobatib junction where the buses to Panganiban and Paracale pass. It was 4:30AM when the bus conductor woke us up, we were already in Talobalib, a merely seven hours trip.

We got off and the cold breeze of Camarines Norte greeted us. While summer already enveloped the Metropolis, bringing burning heat at noon and humid nights, it was unbelievably cold in the town at dawn. In fact, the air outside was cooler than the artificial cold inside the bus.

Right at the junction, we were lucky that a carinderia /bakery was already open that early. They provided us shelter for a while, where we had our breakfast while waiting for the first trip to Paracale at six in the morning. An order of pancit bato and hot coffee costs not more than P25.

Talobatib to Paracale

It was already 6:30 in the morning, the sun was already up and the buses to and from Panaganiban and Paracale were already passing the junction. We crossed the street from the carinderia and waited for the bus to Paracale. After 30 minutes of waiting, an empty provincial bus from Paracale made a U-turn in the junction and loaded us. It was the start of an hour trip from Talobatib junction to Paracale fish port that costs P25.00.

The bus dropped us at a small alley leading to the fish port. While walking towards the port, I met Ate Annie. She was also going to the port to buy bagoong alamang fresh from the fishermen from Mangkawayan and other neighboring barangays . I asked her of the public boat going to Barangay Mangkawayan and she led us to the port where small fishing boats are docked.

Paracale port is not a usual port – no light house, no concrete platform – just a shore where a river meets the sea. It is not a port designed for public transport but more of docking place for fishing boats.

We then asked Ate Annie of the private boats going to Calaguas and Maculabo and she introduced us to a boatman who happened to be her friend – Mang Rolly.

Negotiations

Prior to going there, we already estimated the private boat to cost not more than P2000 or we will opt to wait for boat going to Barangay Mangkawayan, a half an hour walk to Mahabang Buhangin. One way ride costs P50.00 per person although the boat schedule is unpredictable.

While Jill and I were busy negotiating with the boatman. Donna, Jonah, Ems and BJ went to the market to buy some items we need – rice, fish, ice, hotdogs, fruits, condiments and other necessary camping supplies aside from our baons . They also rented a gallon of drinking water. The bill amounted to P1450.

Luckily we bargained the boat ride to P2000 for a small fishing boat without safety vests, a trip with overnight stay in Mahabang Buhangin plus side trip to Maculabo and Cumalasag islands. We told Mang Rolly not to worry about their foods and made him promise that no more additional charges will be imposed – and the deal was sealed. With Mang Rolly was his companion named Maton.

Paracale to Maculabo

We left Paracale at 9:30 in the morning. After an hour, the white sand of Maculabo welcomed us.

Maculabo does not belong to the Calaguas Group of Vinzons. It is under the jurisdiction of the town of Paracale. There are inhabitants in the island. Concrete structures, a basketball court, an elementary school, and some nipa huts and cottages lined up the beach front. Nevertheless, the island is still stunning.

On the eastern side of the island is a hill that gives a perfect 360 degrees view of the place, while the shore on that end is covered by big rocks. The view of the island from that end is picturesque.

There is mobile signal in the island, so we decided to contact the bus line to reserve our return trip to Manila before we disconnect to the virtual world (there is no signal in Calaguas). We called Amihan Bus and asked them to fetch us at Talobatib junction with their last trip to Manila on the next day. Their Manila bound bus leaves Daet at 9PM and will be in the junction after 30 minutes.

After exploring the island, we then had our lunch at a cottage lent to us by a very kind town councilor. We cooked some rice with our butane powered camping stove and opened some of our canned goods – tuna, bangus and Vienna sausage. It was a perfect time for stories, bonding and getting-to-know-you stuff.

We finished lunch around noon and the direct heat of the sun was already starting to burn us, so we took a dip to the cold waters of Maculabo. It was refreshing.

Maculabo to Calaguas

It was already past noon when we bid adieus to Maculabo with a promise that we will go back there again someday. We headed to Calaguas islands around 2PM. It was a smooth ride, the waters were calm compared to Vinzons route were the waves seem angry the last time we took the route. Actually, locals call the area of Vinzons as basagan due to its huge waves, a total opposite if you are coming from Paracale.

As we sail away from Maculabo, the islands belonging to Calaguas group started to enlarge. From afar, the white sand beaches of these islands started to appear. I asked Mang Rolly to name some of the islands, he pointed Cumalasag to our right, and Pinagtakpan on our left, while the bigger island ahead of us was Tinaga, where the beaches of Mahabang Buhangin and Pinagtigasan are located.

There were few big fishermen’s boats near the shore of Calaguas with a lot of people in it. They were fishermen trading their catch from the rich waters of the surroundings.

Touchdown Mahabang Buhangin

After an hour of boat ride from Maculabo, our boat docked to a long stretch of white and powdery sand. I was mesmerized as if it was my first time to see the place. Except for some colorful flags installed on one area of the beach front, nothing much has changed since the last time I visited Mahabang Buhangin. In fact, it was even more beautiful than the first time. The blue skies and the sunshine reflected a postcard perfect image of a white sand beach in green and blue waters, and I fell in love with the place the second time.

Jill, Donna, Jonah and Ems quickly got off the boat and jumped for joy shouting “Happy beach! Happy beach!” They were like kids, and their eyes reflected happiness and excitement. I also saw happiness and fascination from the eyes of BJ, FM, Rina and Ruby.

When all our feet landed in Mahabang Buhangin, I sensed that it was going to be a perfect trip.

Mang Bert, owner of a part of the Mahabang Buhangin welcomed us. He told us that we were the only group occupying the island for the day and we all rejoiced. We set up our camp near the water source and arranged our supplies on the table. Mang Bert offered us fresh buko for P20 pesos each and we never resisted.

After setting up our camp and arranging our supplies, we ran to the waters and took a dip. We strolled and lied down to the powdery sand and surrendered to the breathtaking beauty of the place. We owned the island on that moment – it was just us, the sun, the sea and the sand.

The sun was already setting when we decided to walk to the rocky northern side of the beach. During low tide, one can cross the rocks and walk further north. But it was high tide so we just sat there and waited for the sun down. That was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever witnessed.

Ems and I were busy capturing the sunset when others went back to the camp to start preparing our dinner.

Surprise Party

While Donna, Jill and Ems were preparing the soup, rice, chicken adobo and fried hotdogs for our dinner and I was arranging our green mango salad bar, Jonah was busy preparing for our surprise bonfire birthday party by the beach for Jill. She was inside their tent blowing the balloons.

When the dinner was ready, we offered a prayer and enjoyed our simple dinner with Mang Rolly and Maton while exchanging stories and laughter.

Jill volunteered to clean the table after our supper, a perfect timing for us to prepare the bonfire and the party. Meanwhile, others already gathered at the bonfire with the party props, foods and some alcohols. The heat of the bonfire made some balloons explode, fortunately Jill didn’t hear it, and when everything was set, we then called Jill, wore our party hats and greeted her “Happy Birthday!!!”

Jill was surprised.

Stories after stories, laughter after laughter, pictures after pictures, burned mallows after burned mallows, and shots after shots, we all had fun under the moonlight, with stars adorning the dark sky and the waves serving as our music. We lost track of time as we were enjoying the night, the last image on my mind was when all of us went back to our camp to call the night off.

Good Morning Calaguas

I woke up early morning, dizzy and weak. Ruby and Rina, the two most sober during the night party woke up early to prepare our breakfast. Donna, who was drunk during the party, was surprisingly awake so early and helped the two. I wanted to help but I couldn’t stand the dizziness and weakness, so I decided to take a power nap.

Wake-up call was announced when the breakfast was ready. The power nap was effective. I felt better and stronger. Pancit canton, breads, hotdogs and some canned goods were enough for all of us.

The Other Sides

We repeatedly made a call to explore the southern part of the beach since we arrived. This was the part of Mahabang Buhangin that we failed to visit last year. So we walked approximately one half kilometer and reached the southern tip. Rocks, huge and small, are scattered along the shore of the edge. I climbed one and took a picture of the entire stretch of the beach and adored the place once more.

We spent some time swimming there while exchanging teases and stories of what happened last night. I borrowed Donna’s mask and snorkel set and surveyed the underwater of the area, there are small population of fish and corals there, an ideal place to snorkel.

After sometime, we decided to go back to the northern tip since it was already low tide. We walked from one end to the other. There were already other tourists’ boats arriving for a day trip.

On the northern end were bigger rocks that can be crossed to reach a different beach side of Tinaga Island. The sand is golden and not as fine as the sand in Mahabang Buhangin. It was like the beaches of Jomalig.

Before noon, we went back to our camp and prepared our lunch. Ruby and Rina already marinated the pork to be grilled. Mang Rolly and Maton refilled our already empty gallon of drinking water from a water source nearby, they also took charge of the grill, while Donna prepared the rice. Others were busy packing and washing up.

Mang Bert came and we handed him the fee for our stay, P150.00 per person overnight. We even tried to haggle and lower the price, but he resisted, instead, he gave us free buko as birthday treat to Jill.

We had our last meal on the island at lunch time.

Sad Goodbye

We cleared the area past two in the afternoon and had our group picture with Mang Bert, Rolly and Maton before we board the boat back to mainland. The sun was up; the sky and the sea were blue; and the sand perfectly white – that was the last image of Mahabang Buhangin I could remember.

The moment I board the boat back to mainland, I already missed Calaguas.

Return Trip

As agreed before, we will pass by Cumalasag Island before going home. Mang Rolly and Maton maneuvered the boat to the direction of Cumalasag. But later on, the waves started to become bigger. Mang Rolly was surprised; they expected the water in the area to be generally calm especially during summer.

Jill and the other girls decided to call off the Cumalasag side trip as the waves continued to batter our small boat. They were already afraid and worried since we don’t have life vests. The strong waves didn’t stop until we reached the area near the shore of Paracale port.

We hugged each other when we arrived at Paracale. That was my longest two hours boat ride. The first time I got afraid during a boat trip considering that I already survived the bigger waves of Cuyo and Jomalig seas.

We opened our mobile phones and that was when we knew of the powerful earthquakes that hit Japan and Chile that triggered tsunamis in the coastal areas of western South America and the islands and continents in the eastern Pacific. A tsunami warning to the coastal areas of the eastern Philippines including Camarines Norte was raised by various local and international agencies. That explained the big waves.

Timestamp was five o’clock in the afternoon. The last bus trip from Paracale to Talobatib was at 4PM, so we had no other choice but to rent a tricycle at P250.00 per trike that fits up to five people.

Before six, we were already in the Talobatib Junction. We had our dinner at the same carinderia where we had our breakfast the previous day. The bus was scheduled to fetch us at 930 PM, so we took the break to rest and unwind. Donna, Jonah, Ems and Jill decided to kill the time in videoke bar across the street, while Rina, FM, BJ, Ruby and I preferred to stay and rest. After some time, I decided to follow the other girls in the videoke bar.

Around 930PM, the Amihan Bus to Manila parked across the carinderia and we boarded. As soon as we settled on our seats, we all closed our eyes to sleep and when we woke up, we were already in the city and realized that our vacation was finally over.
