Region Canada and USA Rivers
Local Time 2024-04-19 22:56
Evansville is an Ohio River cruise port and city in Indiana USA (Vanderburgh County). By population (around 120,000), the city is ranked Indiana's 3rd-largest, following Indianapolis (state's capital) and Fort Wayne (Southern Indiana's largest). Evansville was founded in 1812 (1817-incorporated) and received city status in 1847.
Port Evansville (locode USEVV) is a major Ohio River port with a modern infrastructure and direct rail and highway connections. Evansville is also designated as a Port of Entry, allowing it to handle both domestic and international cargo shipping. The Port's largest international exports include chemicals (64%), heavy equipment (18%) and foods (5%). Ohio River also connects Evansville with the Great Lakes and also with foreign markets (via New Orleans' Port NOLA) .
As cruise port, Evansville was introduced with American Cruise Lines/ACL 's 2024 summer program and included in the schedule of the ACL riverboat American Heritage (fka Queen of the Mississippi) . The news was announced by ACL in August 2022.
Next table shows ACL's 13-night/14-day itinerary (between Missouri and Pennsylvania via Kentucky-Indiana-Ohio) which was scheduled for the period July-August 2024 and promo-priced from USD 7755 per person with double occupancy.
Cruise ships in Evansville dock at Inland Marina. On the waterfront and to the north are two of the city's unique tourist attractions - the LST Dock (where is permanently moored USS LST-325 /a 1943-built landing ship tank, now serving as a WW2-themed museum) and Bally's Evansville (Hotel & Casino).
Indiana's first casino Bally's Evansville (1995-opened) was originally functioning on a riverboat (City of Evansville). The casino boat was an exact replica of the 1866-built Robert E. Lee (paddlewheel/sidewheel steamboat). In 2013, the casino boat (length 94 m / 310 ft, width 21 m / 70 ft, total public space 47863 ft2 / 4447 m2) was renamed Tropicana Evansville. Since 2018, Bally's Evansville is land-based (hotel and casino) property and owned by GLP-Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc.
Evansville Airport serves 30+ regularly scheduled domestic flights linking to Sanford/Orlando FL (by Allegiant Air), Charlotte NC and Dallas TX (by American Airlines/American Eagle), Atlanta GA (by Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection), and Chicago IL (American Airlines and Delta Air). Cargo flights (by FedEx Express) link to Memphis TN .
Four major railways serve Evansville's freight rail shipping - CSX, Evansville Western, Indiana Southwestern, and Norfolk Southern. The cargo trains are sorted at Howell Yard, which facilities have monthly capacity to handle ~3000 containers and trailers.
The current-day city's economy is largely based on trade, being Evansville Metro's principal city and serving a large tri-state (Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky) area that groups 30 counties (10x in Illinois, 11x in Indiana, 9x in Kentucky) and has combined population 0,9+ million. Evansville's major industries include healthcare/medical sciences (Deaconess Health System, Ascension St Vincent Evansville, hospitals), banking/finances, higher education (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, Indiana Ivy Tech Community College, Evansville University, Southern Indiana University), manufacturing, logistics/transportation, energy-related businesses, retail shopping.
In Evansville are headquartered large corporations like Escalade Inc (sporting goods), Old National Bank, OneMain Holdings (finance), Berry Global (plastic packaging products), Shoe Carnival (footwear), AmeriQual Group (food processing/production-packaging-assembly-distribution), Accuride (commercial vehicle components), Atlas World Group (moving and storage), Anchor Industries (ship anchors and mooring equipment), Evana Tool & Engineering (industrial machinery), Traylor Bros Inc (heavy construction), Koch Enterprises (heavy equipment), Lewis Bakeries (bakery foods), MetroNet (internet, TV, voice services), Red Spot Paint & Varnish (coatings for plastics), Karges Furniture.
The tourism industry benefits from several large museums (Children's, African American, Wartime, Reitz Home, Arts, History & Science), Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden (1928-opened). Angel Mounds State Historic Park (located approx 8 mi / 13 km southeast of the city), Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve (200 acres / 81 hectares of virgin forest), Wesselman Park (golf course, outdoor sports courts, playground), large-capacity sports facilities (Ford Center, Bosse Field, Double Cola Soccer Complex, Goebel Soccer Complex, Swonder Ice Arena), annual festivals and street fairs (West Side Nut Club Fall, Germania Mannerchor Volksfest).

Riverboat cruise coming to Evansville next month
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Riverboat tours will start making stops in Evansville starting with one this summer.
Visit Evansville President Alexis Berggren shared the news during a visit to the 14 News studio for Midday with Mike.
She says it will be American Cruise Lines’ American Heritage , which is a traditional paddleboat.
Berggren says it’s expected to bring in tourism to downtown businesses.
The old LST dock is where the boat will come in. It won’t be docked full time, but will be a stop on the riverboat’s tour.
The first stop is set for Aug. 8, with more possible in the future.

When visiting John at his farm, a two year old Ernie Akins was exploring in the woods and emerged covered in sticktights. John found it humorous and said, “Boy, we’re going to have to start calling you, ‘Sticktight’”. Since then, “Sticktight” has stuck!

Evansville's recruitment of Ohio River cruise lines, excursion boat is moving fast
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Evansville’s effort to attract Ohio River vessels to the LST 325’s former dock at Inland Marina is making fast progress.
American Cruise Lines will bring a cruise ship with 150 passengers to the dock on Aug. 8, according to the Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati-based BB Riverboats is speaking openly about docking a smaller excursion boat here that would be available for residents and organizations.
The CVB's board last week signed agreement with the City of Evansville and Inland Marina regarding the dock’s usage. It made the CVB the controlling entity of the dock and the point agency for negotiations with boat companies.
More: As pandemic wanes, what's bringing tourism back to Evansville and Henderson?
The LST controlled the dock previously as part of a pact with the city and Inland Marina. It needs some maintenance and paint, but it is in good overall shape, according to the bureau.
Alexis Berggren, the bureau's CEO, told the board in late April that cruise ships in Evansville appeared to be a longer-term goal . But the talks with cruise lines moved more quickly than the bureau anticipated.
"We had been prepped for this process to take 18-24 months, but at least one of the cruise operators ( American Cruise Lines ) feels the situation here is turnkey enough that they want to start this year and see how it all goes," Berggren said.
Evansville restaurants and attractions would benefit from those cruise lines dropping by, as they often do in Henderson, Kentucky. The docking of a BB Riverboats vessel here, though, would open up even more possibilities.
That company would dock an excursion boat on the inside of the dock, while the larger cruise lines would pull up on the outside.
BB Riverboats owner Alan Bernstein confirmed the company's interest during a recent Vanderburgh County Council meeting, where some funding was approved for dock repairs.
He told the council that Evansville has been "underserved" in the past by excursion boats, and "there's a great opportunity here."
"The dock at inland Marine is where this would be viable," he said. "I'm excited about dealing with whoever we need to do to get this done."
An excursion boat would be available for rent, and in other communities they're used for many types of events, including after-prom parties, bureau officials said.

Evansville’s Electric Vehicle Cruise a Different Kind of Car Show
Following a successful inaugural car show Sunday, organizers of “EVs for EVV” or, “Electric Vehicle Event for Evansville,” are already planning on a show next year.
Organizer Caroline Nellis of Tri-State Creation Care, said they’re shooting for September 23, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Nellis feels like they’ve also made some history with their car show, and maybe even some electric converts.
“This is the first electric vehicle cruise that Evansville has ever had,” she said. “So I’m hoping that this will be the first of an annual thing. It’ll become like the frog follies became for Evansville.”
The day of the show, the EV side is a little quiet compared to the typical hot rod side; the only sounds are enthusiasts talking about features, and the occasional mechanical whirr of automatic doors or seats.
Hundreds strolled through the EV show featuring a range of vehicles — from the demure and cheerful-looking Nissan Leaf, to the brawny Tesla Model X and the Rivian truck, owned by attorney Neil Chapman.
“It’s got four motors — one motor on each wheel. 872 horsepower, which is absolutely necessary for getting a gallon of milk from Schnucks (or a) Starbucks run,” he said with a laugh.
A favorite feature is the large compartment accessible from the outside, located behind the cabin for storing a variety of equipment. Most of the EVs were open for the public to sit in. Several children crawled through this compartment for photos.
Chapman said he bought a Tesla back in 2012. “I just liked the attention frankly, and and being cutting edge.”
Chapman brought the electric motorcycle, a Harley Livewire, which drew the attention of Ron (last name withheld) from Evansville. He said it feels strange. “That’s the first e-bike I’ve sat on,” he said.
The EV section ends with a Chevy Volt, and just beyond, the regular classic car show picks up with a Chevelle SS 396.
There are also European models like Vince Anderson’s 1965 Jaguar E-Type — not “E” for “electric,” of course.
Like several classic car owners WNIN spoke with, he’s not interested in an electric vehicle. He said he would need the range of a gas tank and the charge time of a lunch and bathroom break.
“And then also the fact that you can’t ignore that the electricity that they use generates global warming too, so they’re not zero carbon emission vehicles,” he said. “So I’m an engineer by background, and I used to work in environmental things.”
Anderson isn’t totally wrong. Electricity, especially around southwest Indiana, does come from coal-fired power plants. But University of Southern Indiana mechanical engineering professor Brandon Field said an EV is still far better for the environment.
“The fossil fuel that you’re burning is being used to produce electricity much more efficiently than your car motor is burning the fossil fuel to make the car go.”
Regarding range, Field says many EVs can hit that average “gas tank” range of 300 miles.
EV owners like Lance Seaton of Fort Branch, say range and recharging aren’t a problem.
“I only go to gas stations if I want to energy drink or need to use the bathroom,” he said. “Other than that, I just plug it in tonight and I have a full tank every morning.”
His sharp, black Kia EV-6 GT won “People’s Choice” award. He’s married with three children and he still has a gas-powered van. But, he said he’d go all-electric for his family fleet.
“Really, we just need more charging stations every so often. If they could do one every 100 miles, that’s more than enough.”
Seaton arrived with his battery at about 90-percent, and he said after three hours of powering the EV show PA system, it’s still near 90 percent.

You will not be alone as you take your Ivy Tech journey. Instead, you’ll be guided by your Advisor , who will meet with you to build your Academic Completion Plan. This will include determining which classes to take each semester. If you’re planning to transfer to a four-year university after finishing your Ivy Tech degree or certificate, that will drive your plan.
Finding Your Advisor
You will work directly with an advisor at your location. You will start by logging into MyIvy , scroll to the QUICKLINKS section, and then click Schedule Appointment with Advisor. Worrying about how you’ll pay your tuition should never keep you away from improving your career options with an Ivy Tech education. There are many types of financial aid available to our students, and we want you to find the best fit for your situation. Getting financial aid can help you pay for college now and finish with little or no debt or a more manageable payment plan.
Financial Aid Options
Ivy Tech offers students many ways to find aid that doesn’t have to be paid back. This gift aid includes grants, scholarships, and work study programs.
- Grants - A grant is tuition money given to students based on financial need.
- Scholarships - Ivy Tech offers hundreds of scholarships worth more than $7 million. Scholarships are based on a number of factors, including financial need and/or academic achievement. Many of the scholarships are tied to a certain campus. You must complete the FAFSA and fill out just one scholarship application per year.
- Work Study Programs - You have both federal and state work study programs to consider as a way to help pay for your education. These require you to work a certain number of hours per week.
- Loans - This is money that you borrow from a bank, credit union, or other organization that you are required to pay back once you’re done with school. The payment you make back will be the amount loaned plus interest that is charged over the course of the loan.
Starting with the FAFSA
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the starting point for all financial aid opportunities, and you must fill it out every year. It’s actually easier to fill out than you might think. This page will help you know what information to gather and the steps to take when filling out the form.
To register for classes, you must already be accepted to Ivy Tech. It's a good idea to meet with your Advisor before registering. You can find the courses that best fit your life with our schedule builder, a tool in the MyIvy student portal that lets you easily search for the class you want. Best colleges in Indiana
Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions a person will make for their education, impacting everything from future earnings and employment to potential student loan debt and social circles.
While every student wants to get the best education they possibly can, there are myriad considerations to take into account: location, size, diversity, areas of focus, study abroad opportunities—the list goes on.
While best college lists are often topped with the same handful of expensive Ivy League schools, the U.S. is home to more than 4,000 degree-granting schools spread out across all 50 states and several territories, with amazing education offerings for students to consider.
Stacker compiled a list of the best four-year colleges in Indiana using rankings from Niche . Tuition, student-to-faculty ratio, acceptance rate, and graduation rate are among the factors considered in deciding these rankings. Location is also often a key factor in a school's appeal, whether it be a beachside location, one full of New England foliage, or proximity to tech hubs and companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Google. Online and unspecified location schools were excluded from the rankings.
