Cruise Travel Insurance

What is Cruise insurance?

Cruise cover is a special policy section that you can add onto your regular travel insurance, to get cover for specific risks associated with a cruise holiday – such as missing your ship or being confined to your cabin.

All of our standard policies provide cover for travelling on a Cruise ship, but you will only have the extra cover provided under the optional Cruise cover extension if you choose to purchase this as part of your travel insurance policy.

If you’re venturing across the Mediterranean, taking the trip of a lifetime around Asia or exploring the Caribbean islands on a ship, then traditional travel insurance may not cover you, particularly for cruise specific risks like missing a port stop. By adding Cruise cover to your Allianz Assistance policy, you’ll have cover in case anything goes wrong.

Cruise travel insurance extensions aren't a legal requirement, but some cruise providers do ask you to take out Cruise cover for your holiday, so check your trip booking documents carefully to see whether it’s required for your trip of choice.

Below is some more information about our products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the  policy information hub for full details.

What does Cruise Insurance cover?

  • Missed port departure : If you miss the ship beacuse of public transport delays or your vehicle breaking down on your way to the port, we’ll pay for transport costs so you can catch it at the next port.
  • Cruise interruption : If you fall ill and need to be hospitalised ashore, we’ll pay for the travel expenses so you can re-join the cruise when you’re feeling better.
  • Cabin confinement : We’ll pay up to your claim limit if you’re ill and the doctor confines you to your cabin. This also applies if there’s a medical situation on board that means you have to stay in your cabin.
  • Cruise itinerary changes : If there’s bad weather or a reason why your ship can’t make a scheduled stop, we’ll pay up to the limit shown on your policy.
  • Unused excursions cover : If you can’t make a trip or excursion due to injury, illness or the ship not being able to stop as scheduled, we’ll cover you for the unused cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cruises are a great way to see the world, but they’re different to traditional ‘fly and stop’ holidays. Certain things that happen at sea usually aren’t covered by a standard policy, which is what makes Cruise travel insurance a useful add-on if you’re heading out on the open water.

Cruise travel insurance is specifically designed for those holidaying on a ship. It accounts for unique issues, such as missing the cruise’s departure because your car breaks down on route to the port or being confined to your cabin through illness. It even considers the fact that you’re moving from port to port, rather than staying in one place; the planned itinerary could change, and you may miss a port or not get chance to do an excursion you booked. With standard travel insurance, you wouldn’t be covered for these things. But, if you take out travel insurance with Cruise cover, you’re protected – so you can just enjoy your holiday.

As with any travel insurance policy, the amount of money you pay for your travel insurance with cruise cover will depend on a number of factors, such as your age, whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions and the length of your trip.

The amount you pay will also depend on the level of cover you choose. Our travel insurance with cruise cover comes with two different policy levels: Silver and Gold. Each of these has a different payment limit and excess amount, so you can choose a level of cover to suit you.

To find out how much your Cruise holiday insurance will cost, you can  get a quote  today. Simply fill in your details and we’ll provide you with a quote for your trip.

Though plenty of cruise holidays go without a hitch, the experience can be far from smooth sailing. You could have a virus outbreak on the ship, your luggage could go missing or you could miss a port because of bad weather. For this reason, specialist Cruise travel insurance can be just as important as your passport.

Although Cruise travel insurance isn’t a legal requirement, it’s still incredibly important if you want to be covered while you’re at sea. With Cruise holiday insurance you can relax, knowing that you’ve got cover in place.

From 5th May 2021, we will temporarily be unable to offer travel insurance policies to cover people's pre-exiting medical conditions. This is as a result of improvements we are making to our online booking process. Please keep an eye on the Allianz Assistance website in the future so you are aware when we are able to offer this additional cover again. Policies purchased before 5th May 2021 aren't affected and your cover won't change.

It won't be long before we'll be able to provide you with a quote again for cruise travel insurance with medical conditions included. Once the updates have been made, to purchase  travel insurance with medical conditions  included, you’ll need to provide us with details of any medical conditions you have. This way, we can make sure you’re properly covered and eligible for travel insurance cover with us

Terms and conditions apply.

How to ensure you have the right cover

Does your bank or credit card company provide cover.

Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance cover. While some may be comprehensive, they may not cover you for everything you have planned whilst you’re away, particularly if you have adventurous plans or unusual excursions booked.

Make sure you look into the travel insurance policy that you have before every trip, to make sure it’s suitable for you and your plans.

Purchasing a holiday using a credit card means you are often protected by Consumer Protection cover. In most cases, it allows you to get your money returned to you if your provider defaults and you cannot travel.

Are you covered by ABTA or ATOL?

If you have booked a holiday through a tour operator or travel agent, it may be worth checking if you are covered by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License). This type of cover means that your package holiday is protected if, for example, the travel company providing your holiday arrangements or the travel agent themselves fail financially or close down.

Your travel agents will be able to tell you if your holiday is ABTA or ATOL protected. Alternatively, use the links provided to check your cover at home.

What is an EHIC or GHIC and what can it offer you?

Choose the perfect policy for you, with a range of cover options available.

What does cruise insurance cover?

Cruise travel insurance is an extension to normal travel insurance. When included on a policy, cruise cover can provide a wealth of additional benefits, which have been tailor-made to meet the unique requirements of setting sail on a cruise.

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Coverage for medical expenses or emergency medical treatments in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Repatriation: Handles the expenses associated with bringing you back home following a medical emergency.
  • Cancellation Cover: Protection for canceling your cruise in case of an incident or event covered by your policy.
  • Lost or stolen baggage: Protection in the event of loss, damage, or theft of your baggage or personal belongings during your cruise.
  • Cabin Confinement: Compensation for missed parts of your cruise if confined to your cabin due to illness on board.
  • Missed Port: Compensation if the captain has to alter the itinerary, resulting in a missed port.
  • Missed Excursions: Covers the costs of any pre-booked excursions you can't go on due to cabin confinement.
  • Cruise Interruption: Cover for your travel and accommodation expenses to reach your next port should you require hospital treatment on land.

Not Covered

  • Undeclared Conditions: It is important to declare all pre-existing medical conditions when purchasing insurance for your cruise. You will not be covered for medical expenses that relate to a pre-existing condition you have not declared.
  • Purchasing After Departure : You must purchase your travel insurance before you depart for your cruise.
  • Travelling Against Advice: You are unlikely to have any cover if you decide to travel against any travel advisories by the government.
  • Changing Your Mind: Your travel insurance does not provide coverage if you decide you no longer wish to go.
  • Missed Flights: Your travel insurance provider will not cover missed flights due to lateness or failure to clear security on time.
  • Under The Influence:  Claims for an accident or incident that occurs while you are under the influence of alcohol.

It's important to read your policy wording for a full list of exclusions.

Common questions

What is cruise travel insurance.

Cruise cover is a mandatory add-on for travel Insurance that protects against travel risks unique to going on a cruise. These can include becoming unwell at sea or added complications if luggage is lost or stolen. With cruise cover, you pay an extra premium for extra protection in case of such events.

Why add the cruise cover option?

If you’re a going on a cruise you must add our cruise cover upgrade.

Remind yourself how much a cruise holiday costs. It's typically more expensive than a standard trip. A voyage tends to last longer than most holidays too. Cruises carry their own risks and Cruise Cover is there in case the unexpected should happen.

We don’t like to think about what could go wrong, but cruises can have their own, unexpected upsets. Certain things that could happen at sea may not be covered by a standard policy alone and the extra protection is designed specifically to help with cruise-related mishaps.

For instance, getting ill at sea might mean you're treated on board first, then need emergency evacuation back to shore. Cruise insurance is there to help in such circumstances.

Why choose Post Office for my cruise insurance?

We’re an award-winning travel insurance provider. Our cover includes:

  • Evening dress hire

And if you need to contact us about travel insurance  our call centres are right here in the UK.

When should I buy cruise travel insurance?

Cruises are often booked several months before the dates when their ships set sail. Buying your policy well in advance can help safeguard against unexpected events or issues that might delay the trip or cause it to be cancelled altogether.

5 Star Travel Insurance from Admiral

Our Platinum level cover has Defaqto's 5 Star rating.

Relax and enjoy complete protection

A cruise is a great choice for those who want to sit back and watch the world go by; total relaxation, no hassle and everything in one place.

While there's no arguing a holiday on the open water is a great experience, it can pose a slightly trickier problem if something goes wrong.

Covid-19 - what our travel insurance covers

Our travel insurance now covers you for certain events related to Coronavirus (COVID-19), provided you have proof of a positive Covid-19 test and your cover is active at the time of the event.

What we cover

We provide cover for some costs related to Covid-19: please see Section 1 'emergency medical costs and repatriation' and Section 2 'cancelling or cutting short your trip' in your policy book for full details on what's covered.

We'll cover you if:

  • you were diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • a close relative died or became seriously ill as a result of Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • you weren't allowed to board your pre-booked outbound travel due to symptoms of Covid-19
  • an insured person or a close relative died during the trip because of Covid-19
  • you couldn't take part in an excursion due to you self-isolating after getting Covid-19

What we don’t cover

You won't be covered if:

  • you had reason to believe your trip may be cancelled, postponed or cut short when you booked it, purchased your policy or started your trip
  • any government or public authority imposes travel restrictions or quarantine on a community, location, or vessel because of Covid-19 (this includes, but is not limited to, local lockdowns, entry requirements, being denied entry and airspace closures)
  • you have to quarantine after arriving in the UK or abroad
  • the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) change their advice to avoid ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination because of Covid-19

For more information about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your travel cover, see our FAQ page . And remember to check the policy booklet carefully before you buy to make sure our cover meets your needs.

Calm seas with Cruise Insurance

By adding our Cruise Travel Insurance upgrade, your travel insurance will be validated while you're on board the cruise ship. You won't be covered for any part of your holiday without the add-on.

What does Cruise Travel Insurance cover?

By adding cruise cover, your Admiral Travel Insurance will cover you for all the holiday essentials such as lost luggage and medical expenses as well as:

Missed port departure

If you miss the departure of your cruise and have to pay for accommodation or travel expenses to get to the next dock, Admiral will cover you up to the limit shown on your policy if the departure was missed due to:

  • Delays or failures to scheduled public transport (excluding taxis)
  • An accident or breakdown of the vehicle you're travelling in
  • An accident or breakdown ahead on the motorway or dual carriageway you're travelling on, causing a delay
  • Strike, industrial action or adverse weather

Cruise cabin confinement

For every 24 hours you're confined to your cabin by the ship's medical officer, for medical reasons (including declared pre-existing conditions) we will pay up to the limit shown on your policy. You must provide written confirmation by the on-board medical officer.

Unused excursions

Don't worry if you miss a pre-booked excursion due to cabin confinement through illness or an accident. We'll pay up to the policy limit for any sickness or accidents covered under the emergency medical and repatriation section of your travel insurance.

Cruise interruption

If you fall ill during your cruise and miss part of it due to needing medical treatment on dry land, we'll pay any travel expenses you have to pay to rejoin the ship (up to the policy limit specified). You'll need to get a medical certificate to confirm.

With all of the above examples exclusions apply – please see your policy guide for more information.

What happens if my cruise holiday is cancelled?

If your cruise is cancelled for any of the reasons below, you'll receive up to £5,000, depending on the level of cover you choose, to cover the costs of your trip:

  • Death, illness, injury or complications of pregnancy or childbirth of you, your travel companion, close relative, close business associate or anyone you planned to stay with
  • Court cases and quarantine if you or your travelling partner, or anyone you planned to stay with, is quarantined, called for jury service or as a witness and the court refuses to reschedule
  • Redundancy cover for you and your travelling partner if either is made redundant from the company you've been employed at continuously for at least 24 months
  • Armed forces and emergency services if you or your travelling partner is a member of the British Armed Forces or the emergency services and has authorised leave cancelled due to an unexpected emergency
  • Home damage you or your companion can't travel if your home is burgled or seriously damaged by a fire, storm or flood within seven days of your departure
  • Passport or visa your passport or visa is stolen in a burglary at your home in the seven days before your departure and you're unable to get a replacement in time

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a short or long term illness or injury you have or have had before you buy travel insurance. This includes having symptoms, tests, diagnosis or medical treatment for a condition.

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can offer cover. If you’re unsure what needs to be declared or if you're unable to find your condition on the medical conditions list, please contact us on 0333 234 9913.

Your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered unless you’ve:

  • Declared them all on your policy
  • Received written confirmation that we’ll cover your medical condition
  • Paid any additional premium in full

Policy terms and conditions apply. Please note, if you’ve had a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 and been prescribed medication, received treatment, or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist for any medical condition in the past two years, this needs to be declared on your policy.

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing conditions or give us incorrect information, your policy may be invalid, and we may refuse all or part of any claim you submit.

Cruise Travel Insurance

Our Cruise Travel insurance covers you for:

  • Cruise interruption

Defacto Rated

Cruise Travel Insurance provides essential cover for your cruise. This includes onboard medical emergencies, cruise interruptions and cancellations, cabin confinement and lost luggage.

We can help you find a cruise Travel Insurance policy tailored to your exact needs and preferences, even if you are living with medical conditions. We also have no upper age limits on our cruise policies.

What is Cruise Travel Insurance – and why do you need it?

Cruise Travel Insurance is specially designed to cover all aspects of your cruise, giving you peace of mind and comprehensive protection.

  • It’s tailored for cruises: Unlike standard Travel Insurance, Cruise Travel Insurance includes essential cover specific to cruises, including cabin confinement, onboard illnesses, and medical emergencies
  • Medical conditions: Cruise Travel Insurance is essential if you’re living with a pre-existing medical condition, as it covers specific cruise-related incidents that aren’t included with standard cover. For example, if you need an emergency air ambulance back to the UK from Spain and don’t have cruise cover, you could face costs of tens of thousands of pounds
  • Cover is a requirement for many cruise companies: most cruise operators need you to have a comprehensive Travel Insurance policy in place before you set sail, making this a vital consideration ahead of your cruise

Having the right kind of policy ahead of your trip is a great way to make sure your cruise is smooth sailing.

Our experts say… “If you’re planning to take a cruise, you may think that standard Travel Insurance will be enough. However, you won’t have protection for your trip without taking out cruise cover. As well as medical cover, Cruise Travel Insurance also includes extra protection for things like cabin confinement or missed excursions.”

Read more of our customer’s experience:

“This is a return to AllClear after they ‘ saved the day’ last year when our original insurance company declined to cover us when we extended our holiday and added a cruise, so there was no going anywhere else and they didn’t disappoint this year. The advisor was patient, considerate and professional. There were a few health issues to be considered and he explained everything clearly.”

How AllClear gave Philip the confidence to keep cruising

After being turned away by other providers, Philip found AllClear. The family opted for their Gold Plus policy. After the turbulence of finding the correct insurance provider, the Jolly family were delighted and relieved that, after all, their cruise could go ahead.

What our Customers Say

Frequently asked questions on cruise travel insurance, do you need special travel insurance for a cruise.

Yes, most cruise operators need you to have a comprehensive Travel Insurance policy in place before you set sail. You can add Cruise Cover to our Gold Plus policies or take out Platinum Travel Insurance, which covers cruises as standard.

A standard Travel Insurance policy will not cover cruise-specific risks and incidents, such as cabin confinement, missed port departures, itinerary changes, and onboard illnesses or medical emergencies.

Can you add Cruise Travel Insurance to an existing policy after booking?

For Annual Multi-Trip policies , you can add Cruise Cover to your existing Gold Plus policy after booking your cruise. Cruise cover is already included in platinum policies.

It’s important to ensure your policy covers cruise-specific risks like cabin confinement and missed port departures. So, whether you’re upgrading an existing policy or buying a new one, always check the details to make sure you have comprehensive cover for your cruise.

Do you need Cruise Travel Insurance for a domestic cruise?

Yes, you need Travel Insurance for a domestic cruise, even though you won’t be leaving the country. Many cruise lines now require guests to have valid Travel Insurance to board

While international medical cover may not be necessary, other aspects such as cover for trip interruptions, cancellations, or lost luggage remain essential.

Do you need Cruise Insurance for a river cruise?

Yes, you need Cruise Insurance for a river cruise . You will have no cover on a river cruise if your policy doesn’t include cruise cover.

Does your Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance cover you on a cruise?

If you have a Gold Plus policy, you will need to add Cruise Cover as an optional extra onto your Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance to make sure you’re covered.

If you have a Platinum policy, Cruise Cover is automatically included.

Standard Travel Insurance does not cover cruises, including river cruises. Ensure you have Cruise Cover before departing, as you won’t be covered while on a cruise without this add-on.

Can I add insurance after booking a cruise?

Yes. As long as you have not yet left for your cruise you can buy Cruise Cover after booking your holiday.

Will you be covered if you have a medical emergency on your cruise?

Yes, as long as you’ve declared your pre-existing medical conditions beforehand, and it fits within the terms and conditions of your policy.

What if your port visit gets cancelled due to bad weather?

AllClear Cruise Travel Insurance offers compensation if scheduled port visits are cancelled due to adverse weather or timetable restrictions. Please refer to your specific policy wording for details.

If you have a GHIC, do you still need specialist Cruise Travel Insurance?

Yes, you will still need Cruise Travel Insurance.

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) will ensure you are entitled to the same level of treatment as a citizen of that country. However, a GHIC is not a replacement for Cruise Travel Insurance, as it does not cover you for:

  • The costs of rescue and repatriation (an air ambulance from Spain back to the UK costs £10,000 or more)
  • Lost or stolen property such as passports, baggage or precious items
  • Losses from trip cancellation, curtailment and interruption
  • Extra travel and accommodation costs due to illness
  • Any medical treatment needed outside of the EU

Do Cruise Travel Insurance policies cover land holidays?

Yes, holiday insurance for cruises covers both land and cruising holidays.

If you’re not going on a cruise but are looking for increased cancellation cover, you could choose AllClear Gold Plus or AllClear Platinum, where you can increase cancellation cover up to £25K per person.

Does Cruise Insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, Cruise Insurance can cover pre-existing medical conditions, but you need to make sure to disclose them when purchasing the policy to ensure proper cover.

Is it possible to get Cruise Travel Insurance for the rest of my group?

If you’re planning to enjoy a cruise with your loved ones, you can protect everyone under one policy with either a Family Cruise Cover or a Group Travel Insurance .

Do you need to declare all of the places you’ll visit on a cruise?

Yes. Due to the different costs for medical treatment across the world, you need to declare the destinations of your cruise holiday.

Why is Cruise Insurance more expensive?

Medical treatment on a cruise is very expensive compared to most land-based trips. As the cost of potential claims is so high, Cruise Cover can be more expensive than Standard Travel Insurance.

Whether you’re sailing on the seas or a river, we’ve designed our cruise travel insurance to keep you protected onboard and ashore. With no upper age limit and cover for pre-existing medical conditions, we cover potential issues that are specific  to cruise travel.

What is cruise travel insurance and do you need it?

Just as cruises provide a unique style of holiday, they can also potentially come with their own unique issues. For example, bad weather could mean missed excursions or, if you get particularly unwell on a cruise, it could cost tens of thousands of pounds to airlift you for medical treatment. That’s why our cruise travel insurance covers you for any cruise-specific issues you could encounter.

For example, cruise insurance means you’re financially protected for costs from:

  • Missed departures. Traffic jams always happen when you need them least, but this shouldn’t hinder your holiday. Cruise insurance means we’ll compensate you if you miss your cruise departure.
  • Cabin confinement for any reason. It’s tough enough being cooped up, let alone having to worry about the money you’ve already spent. Cruise cover means you’ll get some money back for every day you’re confined to your cabin.
  • Any money spent on unused excursions. If you miss an excursion for any reason, such as bad weather or illness, cruise cover means you’ll be compensated.
  • Flights back to the mainland in case of illness. A 2010 study found that more than 12% of injuries aboard cruise ships are reported as serious . If you suffer a serious injury, you want to make sure you are covered for medical transport to a hospital if needed
  • Repatriation back to the UK. In extreme cases, you may need to be flown back to the UK for treatment, which can be costly. Cruise insurance policies will cover you for this.

Some cruise providers require you to have comprehensive travel insurance arranged to travel – just one more reason to make sure you’re fully covered.  To get cruise travel insurance, you’ll need to buy travel insurance and add the cruise cover option while you’re looking at the quote.

What does InsureandGo’s cruise travel insurance cover?

What’s covered.

  • Cabin confinement : If you’re feeling a bit poorly and need to be confined to your cabin, make sure you confirm it with the ship’s medical officer so we can help with your compensation cover. We’ll pay £100 for each day you’re trapped inside, up to a limit of £1,000. If this confinement is due to a pre-existing illness you must have disclosed and discussed this with us before your cruise insurance purchase.
  • Cruise interruption : If your cruise is interrupted because you need unexpected hospital treatment, we’ll cover up to £1,000 to help get you to the next port to rejoin the cruise and continue your holiday. Alternatively, our insurance for cruise holidays covers repatriation where necessary.
  • Itinerary changes : If your cruise ship misses a port due to poor weather or timetable restrictions, our cruise insurance will cover you for up to £100 per port for up to 5 ports.
  • Missed cruise ship on port : No one’s holiday deserves to be lost at sea! If you missed your cruise due to problems with public transport, experienced a vehicle breakdown or were affected by an accident-induced traffic jam en route to the port – we’ll cover up to £1,000 to get you to the next docking port point to meet your cruise.
  • Unused excursions : If you missed out on some great activities or excursions that you’d booked and paid for before suddenly being taken ill and confined to your cabin, our cruise travel insurance will cover you up to £500.

(Note: The above is only available on our Silver, Gold and Black policies, and only when you pay the extra premium for cruise cover)

For more details on what you’re covered for, see our full cruise travel insurance policy breakdowns.

Anything else?

All our yearly holiday insurance policies include:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Cover for cancellation of your trip
  • Personal belongings and baggage cover
  • Personal money, passports and travel documents cover

The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel insurance you buy. Make sure you have a look at our policy wording to see the full terms and conditions.

What’s not covered?

We aim to provide as much cover as we can on our policies. However, there are some situations no travel insurance will cover. For example:

  • Events or reasons to claim which took place before you booked the trip or the insurance was purchased cannot be covered. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control.
  • Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
  • All of our cruise travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip, but there may be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go.

Remember that to get cruise insurance, you need to book travel insurance and add cruise cover to that policy.

The best travel insurance for your cruise

Cruise insurance can be added to another type of travel insurance, and we have plenty of options to suit your holiday style. Wherever you’re travelling, and however long for, we’ll have a policy for you:

  • First time cruising? Simply add cruise cover to a single-trip insurance policy. Easy peasy.
  • Doing multiple holidays or cruises this year? It might work out better to get annual travel insurance and add cruise cover to that.
  • Enjoying later life? Cruise travel insurance can be added to plans that suit your needs better, whether that’s travel insurance for over 50s , or even travel insurance for over 80s .
  • Have a pre-existing health condition? Make sure your medical travel insurance covers your cruise
  • Cruising along multiple stops? Depending on your cruise destinations, you might need worldwide travel insurance or travel insurance for Europe .

Choose a cover level to suit your travel needs

Which destinations are covered by our cruise travel insurance.

We know your to-do list for your next trip can be a long one, so we make getting cruise insurance as simple as possible:

1. Let us know a little info

We need to know a bit about your cruise, who you want to cover and when you want the policy to start. We will also ask you for information regarding any pre-existing medical conditions so that we can ensure we provide you with the right level of cover.

It’s quick and easy to give us this information, either online or by calling our team:

2. Get your quote

Once we have all the details we need, we will send you your quote. At this stage, you can go ahead and buy your policy, or save the quote for the future.

“Cruise cover is an absolute must-have for anyone taking a cruise because it covers for issues you might face, like a missed departure or being confined to your cabin. Regular travel insurance doesn’t cover these, so specific cruise cover is super important. Without it you won’t have any cover while on a cruise.” Russell Wallace – Travel insurance expert

We cover a wide range of medical conditions on our policies, including those with insurance for a cruise, and we will never refuse to cover a diagnosed pre-existing medical condition without prior consideration.

We consider pre-existing medical conditions to be any illness or condition that has occurred before you take out an insurance policy, ranging from asthma to cancer . We can usually cover any medical conditions, often with no additional premium, and medical cover on your cruise holiday is no exception.

All you need to do is disclose your pre-existing condition during your quote, and we’ll sort the rest.

Frequently asked questions on cruise travel insurance

Why do i need special insurance for a cruise.

You need special insurance for cruises in case you run into any cruise-specific complications. These include things like cabin confinement if you are unwell, missed departures for any reason, and unused excursions, as well as typical holiday issues like delays or cancellations.

Some normal travel insurance plans might cover some of these problems, like delays or cancellations, they won’t cover cabin confinement and might not cover repatriation.

Do you need travel insurance for a domestic cruise?

Whatever the destination of your cruise, you will need to add cruise cover to your travel insurance – even if it’s a cruise around the UK. Cruise travel insurance makes sure you’re fully covered and includes elements of cover that are specific to cruises, such as being airlifted to the mainland.

While typical UK travel insurance usually covers land-based holiday issues, they won’t cover many of the issues you could face on a domestic river or sea cruise holiday.

Can I buy travel insurance after booking a cruise?

Some travel operators may require you to buy your insurance at the same time as booking your cruise holiday. Others are more flexible as long as you purchase your cruise travel insurance before you set sail.

It is a good idea to check with your cruise provider before booking insurance. Some cruise providers have specific requirements for travel insurance, such as having a certain amount of medical and COVID-19 cover.

How much is cruise insurance?

Insurance for a cruise doesn’t have to be expensive. The price you pay will depend on where you’re going, how long for, and whether you have any medical conditions. Choose either a single-trip or annual multi-trip policy and you’ll be given the chance to add cruise travel insurance to your policy.

Will my EHIC or GHIC cards cover my cruise?

The GHIC, or EHIC as it was previously known, does not cover specific costs that you might encounter when on a cruise, and it does not cover repatriation costs either.

Although the GHIC covers some of the medical costs when travelling in Europe, the UK Government website recommends that all UK travellers take out appropriate travel insurance when travelling abroad. It’s also important to note that the GHIC will not cover other cruise-specific issues, such as missing the departure or cabin confinement.

Does regular cruise insurance cover medical expenses?

Our cruise travel insurance covers emergency medical bills, as well as other complications, like delays, cancellations and missed departures.

Be sure to check the wording on your policy to find out exactly what is covered and what is not.

Who can buy an InsureandGo cruise insurance policy?

All our annual travel insurance policies are available to UK residents. This means:

  • Someone who has been living in the UK or the Channel Islands for at least six of the last 12 months
  • They must be in the UK at the time of buying
  • All trips must start and end in the UK

Unfortunately, we can’t provide cover to anyone who doesn’t fit this description.

The 5 best cruise travel insurance plans

Viking Cruises_Cruise Stock_Viking Star New York

While smooth sailing will always be the aim, cruising today is often about expecting the unexpected. You can prepare yourself by taking out an insurance policy that can compensate you when your vacation at sea does not go as planned.

Need to cancel your trip last minute due to an accident or illness? Did your bags get delayed or lost? Do you need to exit the sailing early to take care of an emergency back home? Was there a mechanical issue with the ship that required a change of itinerary, causing you to miss your flight home?

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

All of these contingencies and more can be covered; it's just a matter of finding the best insurance policy for you. Here's how to evaluate which plan is the right choice for you, as well as five of the best cruise travel insurance plans available.

The best cruise travel insurance plan will always be a 3rd-party option

cruise insurance uk

No plan will meet the needs of all cruise travelers, so there is little benefit to booking the one insurance option recommended by your cruise line during the booking process other than convenience.

You'll often find more affordable rates, comprehensive coverage and favorable terms utilizing third-party insurance companies. You'll have a wide choice of plans, so you can pick the one that works the best for your situation.

If you're wondering where the best place is to purchase third-party insurance, "No one comparison site is getting preferential deals," says Stan Sandberg, co-founder of TravelInsurance.com . "Insurance carriers' rates are the same anywhere." However, these insurance comparison sites can help you directly compare the pricing and coverage of multiple policies by a range of preferred providers.

Look for the following coverage options and compare coverage amounts to determine which third-party plan is the best cruise insurance option for your upcoming trip.

Trip cancellation

You'll want to be reimbursed if an unexpected event forces you to cancel your cruise. Be sure to read the fine print of your policy, detailing which specific reasons for canceling your trip are covered and not covered.

Trip interruption and travel delays

You'll also want to be covered if issues occur after travel begins. It's important to find "a plan that offers trip interruption if something does happen during your trip, along with a plan that offers emergency medical evacuation, coverage for travel delays and missed connection benefits," adds insurance expert Meghan Walch from InsureMyTrip .

Related: What happens if you miss your cruise

COVID-19 contingencies

Walch advises all travelers booking a cruise to consider a plan that includes cancellation coverage for COVID-19. Note that you'll need more than a home test to file a claim. According to Walch, "You'll need a doctor saying that you have been diagnosed with COVID and specify that you are unable to travel."

In addition, look for coverage if you get sick and need to isolate away from home. "Some plans offer additional trip delay coverage, put in place as a result of needing additional or higher limits for instances that might include if the policyholder gets quarantined in a location," Sandberg adds.

Cancel for any reason

A cancel-for-any-reason optional upgrade offers the most flexibility. You can get a refund of up to 75% if you cancel your voyage for reasons not usually covered by travel insurance. However, it adds about 40% to your premium and can only be purchased within a limited window of time after your cruise purchase.

Related: What happens if my cruise line changes my itinerary or ship?

Lost or delayed baggage

Baggage loss insurance covers your luggage if it is lost, damaged or stolen during your trip. In the case that you make it on the cruise and your bags do not, the insurance agency can assist with locating and redirecting the bags to your next port, reimbursing you for items you may need to purchase to get you through your travels while you are without your belongings and covering your losses in the case that the bag is actually gone for good.

Note that certain high-cost items such as electronics, luxury watches and fine jewelry are not always covered by baggage loss insurance. Consider purchasing additional coverage for such items or — better yet — keep those items with you at all times.

Health coverage

Medical coverage is another consideration. "Most domestic health coverage [including Medicare] does not cover travel abroad, so it is important to look at a travel insurance policy that offers medical coverage during your trip, just in case anything happens," says Walch. "If you fall ill or are injured during the trip, it can be pretty expensive – even when going to the ship's onboard medical facility."

Related: How to avoid getting sick on a cruise

Hurricane coverage

Extreme weather and hurricanes are typically not covered if the cruise commences as scheduled, though you might be eligible for trip interruption coverage if weather cancels the cruise or cuts the itinerary short. There are also insurance plans that offer trip reimbursement if a destination on your itinerary is under a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-issued hurricane alert or warning.

How much will cruise travel insurance cost?

Insurance pricing is dependent on the trip cost and the age of the insured travelers. Sandberg estimates that "travelers in their 30s or 40s can ballpark insurance coverage somewhere around 5% to 7% of the trip costs, with rates that can get lower depending on the extent of coverage."

Insurance is a tiered product that gets more expensive as you age. "As you get older, that range can expand to 10% of trip costs," notes Sandberg. "Adding bells and whistles, like 'cancel for any reason' [coverage], rates can rise to 11% to 12% of the cost of your trip."

5 best cruise travel insurance plans

cruise insurance uk

Following extensive research scouring the fine print, we've selected five of the best cruise insurance plans that will appeal to a variety of seagoing travelers.

All five plans provide coverage for COVID-19-related trip cancellation and interruption.

For the leisure cruiser: TravelSafe Classic Plan

TravelSafe's Classic Plan is the best value all-around for the average cruiser, with superior coverage limits at a fair rate.

This plan's coverage includes an impressive $1 million per person for medical evacuation and a high $2,500 coverage limit for bag loss. You have extra time – 21 days – from your initial deposit to add a cancel-for-any-reason upgrade to your plan. The accident and sickness medical coverage is primary, with coverage up to $100,000.

The policy's $750-maximum trip delay coverage begins after a six-hour delay and includes kennel fees for up to $100 per day, along with coverage for additional meal and accommodation expenses.

For the budget conscious: AXA's Silver Plan

AXA's Silver Plan is the company's entry-level offering, with more value added than most budget insurance options — most notably the company's concierge service. Coverage under this plan includes robust trip cancellation and interruption coverage, both at 100% of the costs, along with $100,000 for emergency medical evacuation.

The plan also offers identity theft assistance in case your wallet or passport gets stolen while traveling, assisting with filing and obtaining police and credit reports, taking inventory of lost or stolen items, and even wiring emergency funds to you when you're really in a bind.

You won't have the option to purchase a cancel-for-any-reason add-on or opt in for a collision damage waiver on this lowest-tier plan.

For the luxury cruise traveler: John Hancock's Gold Plan

John Hancock's Gold Plan offers robust medical evacuation and repatriation coverage up to $1 million per person, ideal for those luxury cruises that rove to the farthest reaches of the globe. The plan has excellent baggage loss coverage at up to $2,500 per person, along with a low three-hour minimum travel delay ($1,000 per person, $200 daily limit) benefit.

Preexisting medical conditions are covered by this policy, though you must purchase your policy within 14 days of your trip deposit.

For increased medical coverage: Seven Corners' RoundTrip Choice Plan

Seven Corners' RoundTrip Choice Plan offers primary medical coverage for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses up to $500,000, while many other plans only offer secondary coverage. The plan's medical evacuation coverage is high at $1 million, and preexisting conditions are covered with a few conditions that apply, namely that you purchase the policy within 20 days of your initial trip payment.

The policy also offers detailed, robust COVID-19 coverage, including reimbursement for medical care if you contract COVID-19 while traveling. Its coverage also includes meals, local transportation and lodging if you're delayed six or more consecutive hours due to quarantining with COVID-19.

Coverage options on the plan may vary slightly depending on which U.S. state you claim as your residence.

For the adventurous cruiser: World Nomads' Explorer Plan

World Nomads is one of the few insurance companies that will cover more than 200 adventure activities on your travels, including scuba diving, skydiving and bungee jumping. The coverage for the long list of activities includes emergency medical expenses while outside the U.S., medical evacuation and repatriation, along with trip interruption.

World Nomads' Explorer Plan also offers $25,000 in coverage for nonmedical emergency evacuation for covered events, such as a natural disaster or political or security situations.

Travelers 70 and older are required to add a "Silver Nomads" policy, offered through TripAssure.

Bottom line

Cruising isn't always a blissful week spent relaxing on the pool deck or snorkeling among multicolored reefs. Mishaps occur, whether it's losing luggage, missing a flight or falling ill.

The best cruise insurance policies are the ones that won't let you sail without a safety net, charging a fraction of your trip expenses in exchange for the peace of mind that there's a plan in place should something go wrong. With a range of pricing and coverage options available, you can feel confident that you can find a policy to suit your travel needs.

Woman at airport after taking out travel insurance

If you’re looking to escape the UK winter, or if you’re saving your holiday for the height of summer, you may wish to consider travel insurance. We explain what travel insurance is and some of the best policies on the market for your holiday.

In 2022, UK residents made 71 million visits abroad. This was over three times the amount made in 2021, when COVID restrictions kept many people at home.

So if you’re part of a growing number of people spending time abroad, have you considered travel insurance? By taking out one of these policies you could be protected for lost baggage, delayed flights, and medical emergencies abroad among other unforeseen events.

In this article we explain:

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance covers the cost of unforeseen events and mishaps that either stop you from going on holiday or affect you while you’re away.

Depending on the policy, travel insurance might cover you for:

  • Medical bills if you suffer illness or have an accident while you’re away
  • Cancellation of your trip for reasons outside of your control
  • Lost or stolen baggage

Policies are usually relatively inexpensive and can give you the peace of mind that your costs will be covered if something bad happens while you are on holiday.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), a trade body, the average claim on travel insurance in 2022 was a little over £970. So while travel insurance won’t stop bad things from happening, but it can prevent you from having to find the money to pay for unexpected costs even after you return from your holiday.

Many people opt to take out travel insurance to cover potential medical care while away.

Every week, 3,000 Brits need emergency medical treatment while abroad, according to the ABI. But travel insurance isn’t just about covering medical costs. It can protect you against a range of unplanned events:

  • Cancellation or trip interruption for reasons outside your control
  • Missed transport or delayed departure for reasons outside your control
  • Personal injury and death, including medical evacuation
  • Lost, stolen or damaged items, including baggage, passports and money – check if your home contents insurance covers you
  • Accidental damage or injury caused by you

Does travel insurance cover cancelled flights?

Most travel insurers provide a basic level of cover for cancelled flights. Aviva’s travel insurance, for example, will pay out if your flight is cancelled due to an airport shutdown.

If your airline cancels your flight then you should claim a refund directly with them, so your travel insurance could cover other costs such as hotel bookings, vehicle rentals, and other possible excursions.

What are my rights during strike action?

cruise insurance uk

If your flights are cancelled because air staff are striking, which they have over last summer, you might be entitled to compensation from the airline. But for this to apply, customers must have been given less than 14 days’ notice.

It also depends on whether the airline was at fault or not: so if it’s the airline’s staff who are striking, you should be entitled to compensation.

If you’re worried that your flights might be delayed or cancelled, you should also check your travel insurance policy.

Some policies cover you for a cancelled or delayed flight, provided you took out the policy before the strikes were announced.

But if you haven’t yet bought your insurance, you may be out of luck. This is because most insurers won’t cover you for strikes which were already known about.

What should a basic travel policy cover?

When shopping for travel insurance, you should ensure your policy comes with the following seven things as standard:

1. Medical expenses

This covers the costs of any emergency medical and surgical treatment while you’re away.

It usually costs more for cover in the US as medical bills can run into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Any treatment that can wait until you get home is not usually included.

Most policies offer cover of £1 million for medical costs in Europe. This is usually £2 million in the US.

2. Repatriation

This is where you might need to be evacuated from the country you’re visiting.

Repatriation usually happens when you need to get back home to the UK in the event of a medical emergency and is usually covered as standard in most travel insurance policies.

3. Cancellation/curtailment

This covers any travel and accommodation costs you have paid for and can’t use or claim back.

You need a good reason to cancel your trip, so make sure you double check the terms and conditions of your policy.

4. Missed departure

This covers your extra accommodation costs and travel expenses should you miss your departure due to situations outside your control.

It usually includes your car breaking down or being involved in an accident. Leaving home at the last minute won’t count.

This covers you for delays to your travel plans, such as severe weather conditions.

Delays known about before (such as strikes) won’t be covered.

6. Baggage cover

This should cover you if your baggage is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.

You might need extra cover for gadgets or valuable possessions as there are usually limits on separate items.

Losses need to be reported within a certain time frame and you must have a written report from your airline if it loses your baggage.

7. Personal liability cover

This should cover you if you are liable to pay damages due to:

  • Accidental bodily injury to someone
  • Or for loss or damage to someone else’s property
  • Claims made by family members or employees won’t be covered

What extra cover can you buy?

To provide a peace of mind you might be able to add the following onto your policy too:

  • Wedding cover – If you’re travelling abroad for a wedding, some providers might include an add-on which covers damage to your possessions. If you think you need something more comprehensive, then consider a separate wedding insurance policy
  • Gadget insurance – While you’re abroad you may wish to cover your laptop, phone, or tablet from theft or damage
  • Golf equipment cover – Planning to tee off abroad? Then consider cover for moving your clubs overseas. This type of add on includes cover for your equipment if it is lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged

Read more: Is credit card travel insurance any good?

What is not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance won’t cover you for a risk that is known about.

For example, if you have a long-standing medical condition that means you can’t go on holiday, your insurer might not cover you for the cancellation costs.

Insurers also won’t cover you if you have to cancel your trip for reasons within your control. For example, if you miss your flight because you woke up late, your claim is likely to be rejected.

Travel insurance is also unlikely to cover you if you have been irresponsible. For example, if you leave your valuables in your hold luggage then your policy won’t cover you if these items are damaged.

Each travel insurance policy will have specific things it won’t cover and this will vary depending on the provider. So it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully.

What types of travel insurance can you buy?

There are two main options to choose from when taking out a travel insurance policy:

  • Single trip — covers you for one trip of a specified length only
  • Annual multi-trip — covers you for all your trips for one year (if you travel a lot this can work out cheaper than lots of single policies)

You need to make sure that either option of travel insurance covers you for where you are going, such as:

  • Europe only
  • Or the more expensive, worldwide policies (these either include or exclude the US)

But check first which exact countries providers include in their policies. For example, some policies include Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt in their Europe insurance.

There is also specific travel insurance for backpackers, which offers extra cover for those who are likely to be away for an extended period of time or travelling to multiple destinations.

Also bear in mind that if you are doing any extreme sports like skiing or going on a cruise then you might need to buy an add-on.

When should I take out travel insurance?

It’s usually best to take out travel insurance as soon as you have booked your trip.

While many people think of travel insurance as something that covers problems while they are away, some policies cover you for issues, accidents and illnesses that stop you from being able to travel.

Cancellation is one of the main reasons that people claim on a travel insurance policy. If the cancellation happens before you have bought insurance then you wouldn’t be able to claim.

How much should I pay for travel insurance?

Your travel insurance premium will depend on a range of factors such as your age, health, type of policy, and destination. This is why an average travel insurance premium will likely be meaningless, so make sure to do your research and get a quote from several different providers before deciding on a policy.

Do I need travel insurance?

Unlike car insurance, travel insurance isn’t a legal requirement. However, it does come with a host of benefits such as cover for medical expenses.

We’ve already listed the benefits of having protection for unexpected medical costs above, and it remains pertinent if you’re travelling abroad and won’t have access to the NHS. According to the ABI, there is one recorded case in 2022 when a traveller in Thailand contracted a serious blood infection which needed intensive medical treatment. The bill eventually came up to £250,000 which was paid in full by their travel insurance provider.

Also consider that some visa applications require you to have a suitable travel insurance policy in place before you apply. If you’re applying for a Schengen visa to travel Europe you’ll need a policy in place which covers medical expenses up to €30,000 during your trip.

FAQs: Travel insurance and medical conditions

Many people solely take out travel insurance to protect themselves from medical expenses. According to the ABI, the average medical claim on travel cover is more than £1,300. Notoriously in the US, these figures run into the tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds.

So below we’ve answered some of the most common medical related questions on travel insurance:

Q. Does travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Some insurers do provide cover for pre-existing conditions. However, it is vital that youflag these conditions during the application stage. If you don’t it could invalidate your policy.

Q. Do you need to tell your travel insurance provider if you have a new medical condition?

If there is a significant change to your personal health then you’ll need to inform your travel insurance provider. This includes being diagnosed with a new long-term illness.

Failure to do so could invalidate your policy.

Q. Can you get travel insurance if you’re over 75 with medical conditions?

Yes. In fact, there are some providers on the market which tailor their policies towards an older demographic. For example, Saga has dedicated policies for over 50s and 70s.

Experts warn of six travel insurance mistakes UK holidaymakers frequently make

N ew data from GoCompare has highlighted that almost a third of all UK holidaymakers wait until they day they jet off to pick up a travel insurance policy, but experts have warned that leaving it to the last minute can be incredibly risky.

While you can secure insurance up until the point you leave the house for your holiday, failing to do so in good time could mean that you miss out on vital coverage elements.

And there are a number of other mistakes that people make when taking out travel insurance. Thankfully though, the experts at Which? have highlighted six of the most common to help tourists avoid pitfalls when it comes to picking the perfect policy.

  • Read more: Expert issues warning as searching certain words and phrases on Google could see you get scammed

Get all the latest money news and budgeting tips from Chronicle Live with our free newsletter

1) Don't wait until the last minute -

Which? warn that leaving your policy purchase to the last minute could mean that you end up missing out on certain coverage elements. Cancellation cover, for example, is unlikely to be included if you're securing a policy hours before you fly.

Meanwhile, GoCompare also warn that last-minute insurance could exclude cover for pre-existing conditions. Which? say: "Buying earlier not only means you have more cover, however. You also have the time to shop around for the best cover for the destination you're travelling to and your circumstances."

2) Never buy when you're already abroad -

If you forget to take out cover before embarking on a holiday, most policies are likely to be void and will leave you unable to claim in the instance of an emergency. However, there are some limited options that can be explored if you've left it too late to secure a deal. GoCompare say that people can buy specialist post-departure insurance which provides the same level of cover as a standard travel insurance policy.

This is only available from select smaller companies though, so you'll end up with less choice and may pay more than you would for a standard policy. You may also have to wait 24, 48 or 72 hours before coverage starts too in an anti-fraud measure to stop people taking out policies after a problem has already incurred.

3) Declare your conditions -

Which? say: "It can be tempting not to mention pre-existing medical conditions when buying a new travel insurance policy. That's because they can push up the cost of premiums or mean you can't make any claims that relate to the condition. In March 2023 we surveyed 2,458 policyholders with a medical condition or a history of one, and 36% reported problems buying cover.

"Expensive premiums were the most common complaint. But lying about your health issue could result in your travel policy being invalidated and means you have to cover the cost of any medical expenses needed on your trip yourself. In some cases, costs can quickly escalate to tens of thousands of pounds."

4) Don't exceed policy limits -

While many people will lay on golden beaches for a fortnight while on holiday, others may want to take part in exciting activities. But beware that not all sports are covered by standard travel insurance. While many policies will cover you for cycling, diving, kayaking and water sports, they may not allow you to claim for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.

You'll usually have to buy an add-on for this. Which? also warn that hiking may not be covered because long-distance walks in remote areas and reaching high altitudes increase the likelihood of needing urgent medical help or assistance - like an air ambulance.

5) Your trip could be too long -

Annual policies may make people assume that they are covered for any length of trip - but this is not the case for a number of insurers. Many will put a time limit on how long they will cover per trip - usually 31 days - so if you want to travel for more than a month you'll have to take out a long stay policy.

Beware though that this type of policy will not cover multiple trips, just one long getaway.

6) Special cruise cover -

Many tourists won't realise that you need specialist insurance when travelling on a cruise. These are designed to cover problems at sea or missed port departures. The policy is often mandatory, and a cruise operator may refuse boarding without it. Thankfully though, you can often buy an add-on to a normal policy for this, or take out a specialist policy altogether.

On getting the best policy for your needs, Which? say: "As always, the first step is to shop around for the best deal. Price comparison sites allow you to view multiple travel insurance quotes at a glance and also include policies for high-risk countries. The main ones for insurance are Compare the Market, Confused.com, GoCompare and MoneySuperMarket.

"Once you've found a deal that is right for you, check how Which? reviewed the provider and policy . Finally, check the policy wording carefully before you buy, as well as any general exclusions and conditions."
