Women Who Allegedly Auditioned To Be Tom Cruise's Girlfriend

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise's dating life has been quiet since he divorced Katie Holmes in 2012. However, before marrying the former Dawson's Creek actress in 2006, the movie star's efforts to find a new love resembled, well, Mission: Impossible.  Cruise reportedly got some help from the Church of Scientology in his efforts to find a new lady love, employing the church's leader, David Miscavige, to help with matchmaking, according to Vanity Fair . Thus was born the rumor of "audition tapes" to date Cruise, an allegation the Church of Scientology has firmly denied since its inception.

Scientologist Marc Headley, who worked for the church's video studio and claims to have seen some of the audition tapes, told Vanity Fair , "It's not like you only have to please your husband — you have to toe the line for all Scientology ... You can't do anything to displease Scientology, because Tom Cruise will freak out."

Headley's wife, Claire, told the magazine that part of why Cruise couldn't get a date was because "[Scientology higher-ups] couldn't find a woman to have the relationship with at a time when Cruise was talking about donating his excess millions to fund Scientology buildings."

However, most of the women who allegedly auditioned for the role of Cruise's new lady ( Radar Online estimates there were two dozen of them) didn't realize that's what they signed up for. Sources reportedly told Vanity Fair  that the women were told they were auditioning for a training film and then asked what they thought of Cruise.

Penelope Cruz

Cruise's Vanilla Sky (2001) co-star Penelope Cruz was his first paramour following his divorce from Nicole Kidman , and it didn't work out. The matching-monikered couple were together for three years before calling it quits in 2004. Radar Online reported that Cruise even considered proposing to Cruz, with whom he was madly in love. However, Cruz reportedly just wasn't that into Scientology.

A source told the site, "Penelope pulled the plug on the relationship because she felt that the Church of Scientology was the third wheel in their relationship. Penelope doesn't have anything against the Church, but it just wasn't her thing. She admired Tom's dedication to it, but it wasn't her cup of tea and wasn't something she wanted to give her life up for."

Vanity Fair reports that Cruz took a set of Scientology courses during her relationship with Cruise (a fact People confirmed with Cruz's rep at the time of their split), but that David Miscavige called her a "dilettante." Cruise and Cruz reportedly couldn't agree on the religion, and sources claimed Cruise needed a "devout Scientologist." The breakup with Cruz over his religion was reportedly the catalyst for the rest of his relationships and courtships moving forward.

Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara was reportedly one of the women Cruise courted after he and Cruz split, but the Modern Family star didn't know what she was getting into at first — and when she found out, she ran for the hills.

The   New York Post reported that Vergara was on a short list of female celebrities in whom Cruise was interested and that Cruise enlisted his close friend Will Smith to invite Vergara to a pre-Oscar party. Vergara reportedly didn't know she was being set up to meet Cruise or being vetted by the Church of Scientology, but when she did meet the marquee hunk, she was smitten. Cruise is said to have courted her with charm, chocolates, and flowers, but when he eventually invited her to the Scientology Celebrity Center, Miscavige was waiting and asked her to renounce her lifelong Catholicism for her alleged audition to be the third Mrs. Tom Cruise. Vergara got spooked in a big way.

"She was fundamentally terrified of Scientology," a source told the outlet. "She sincerely believed that she would be struck down by God and burn in hell if she joined."

The insider added, "She had a narrow escape. ... She privately pitied [Katie Holmes]. Katie is a much weaker, more innocent person than Sofia."

Jennifer Garner

In Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography (via the  Daily Mail ), author Andrew Morton claimed that in 2004, after Cruise and Cruz split, he also pursued Jennifer Garner, reportedly leaving her vague voicemails asking her, "Do you know what true freedom is?" Morton even claims that Cruise went as far as to send Garner an actual, live Bengal tiger after he learned that was the actress' favorite animal.

It didn't work: Garner, a relatively devout Methodist (seriously, how often do paparazzi snap this woman going to church ?), was neither interested in Cruise nor in the Church of Scientology. She was, however, interested in Ben Affleck, whom she married and had kids with not long after Cruise's attempts to court her.

The Church of Scientology adamantly refuted Morton's claims that Cruise chased Garner, releasing a whopping 15-page statement about the book, calling it a "bigoted, defamatory assault" on the religion as well as on Cruise's character.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba was dating now-husband Cash Warren when Cruise allegedly courted her to "audition" to be his next love, according to Lawrence Wright's book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison Of Belief (via the  New York Daily News ). However, Alba didn't take the bait and never even showed up at the Scientology Celebrity Center to "try out."

The Church Of Scientology has adamantly refuted the claims. While Alba has never spoken publicly about the alleged audition process, she did shade Katie Holmes' romance with Cruise, hinting that Holmes was using the publicity surrounding their relationship to try bolstering her then-floundering career.

"I don't date actors and I don't date people to get ahead in my career," Alba told Female First . "I don't want to comment on Tom's relationship with Katie ... but I'm a very private person and I don't feel you should talk about your private life. I think it's best to keep this sort of thing to yourself."

Erika Christensen, Lindsay Lohan, and Kate Bosworth

Tom Cruise reportedly looked to several other starlets, in addition to Alba, Johansson, and Garner, after his breakup from Cruz.

The New York Post reported that Cruise initially began his search for a girlfriend within the Church Of Scientology, since that would make it much easier to find a partner who accepted the controversial religion. He reportedly "auditioned" Scientologists Erika Christensen, Sofia Milos, and Erica Howard, but none worked out. (Interestingly, Christensen would later come out in defense of Johansson after rumors emerged that Johansson's nixed audition caused friction with her.)

When none of those ladies worked out, he and his handlers expanded their search. In Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison Of Belief (via the  New York Daily News ), Lawrence Wright claimed that Cruise also sought out Lindsay Lohan (seriously) and Kate Bosworth as potential matches, but neither ended up as a love connection for the action hero.

Nazanin Boniadi

Iranian-American and Scientologist actress Nazanin Boniadi had a boyfriend when the Church of Scientology reportedly began courting her as a potential girlfriend for Cruise.

Vanity Fair reported that Boniadi was told she was being groomed for a top-secret mission to improve the world. She was ordered to dump her boyfriend, dye her hair, and have her orthodontic braces removed. She was also allegedly instructed to write a 20-page, single-spaced essay about what she wanted in a partner and in her life, as well as to sign a confidentiality agreement.

She was then introduced to Tom Cruise at the New York Scientology Center in November 2004 and dated him for about two months, during which time the Church reportedly controlled her every move.

By January 2005, however, Cruise's ardor for Boniadi had cooled, and sources claim that it was in part due to Boniadi not always understanding David Miscavige's American English. Miscavige then dumped Boniadi on Cruise's behalf. Insiders said she was "punished" after the split and forced to dig ditches during the night and clean toilets with a toothbrush, among other indignities.

Marc Headey told the magazine that Scientology kept producing audition tapes for Cruise throughout his relationship with Boniadi. "Tom never broke up with her," Headey said. "He never spoke to her ... [It was] O.K., boom, next one. O.K., boom, next one. She gets kicked to the curb."

Scientology denied any of this ever happened.

Katie Holmes

The Church of Scientology reportedly hand-picked Katie Holmes for Cruise after reading a Seventeen magazine interview she'd done in October 2004 in which she said she dreamed of marrying him.

Less than a year later, she allegedly passed her audition. In May 2005, Cruise had his infamous couch-jumping moment on Oprah .

The New York Post reported that Holmes signed a contract with Scientology in June 2005. Cruise proposed to Holmes at the Eiffel Tower that month. She announced her pregnancy in October 2005, and daughter Suri was born in April 2006. Holmes and Cruise wed that November.

Since marrying Cruise, Holmes' dead-eyed interviews and general freedoms were reportedly scarce; she told Vanity Fair they "don't go outside very much." She was always surrounded by Scientology minders.

Holmes filed for divorce seemingly out of nowhere in 2011, according to  The Hollywood Reporter .  Holmes reportedly worked closely with her father, a divorce attorney, to blindside Cruise — and the Church of Scientology — with the news, using disposable cellphones and laptops to avoid being traced or followed by private investigators. She filed for sole custody of Suri, reportedly to keep her out of the religion's clutches. Thanks to a masterful prenup, and perhaps fear of public humiliation on both sides, Holmes and Cruise settled their divorce within just 11 days.

The Church of Scientology denies any and all allegations of controlling or monitoring Holmes pre- or post-split.

Scarlett Johansson

In July 2012, Vanity Fair and the  New York Post each reported that Scarlett Johansson was one of the few women on Cruise's short list of starlets to take the bait and come in for an audition, though it's unclear if she knew what she was allegedly auditioning for. A source told the  New York Post of ScarJo's Cruise experience, "When she arrived at the address and found out it was the Scientology center in Hollywood, she freaked out and didn't do a tape."

Johansson didn't issue any confirmations or denials of her experience at the time.

In June 2018, former Scientologist Brendan Tighe told Megyn Kelly Today that he saw Johansson's name on a report, listing her as one of the women who'd come in to try out to be the next Mrs. Tom Cruise. That was when Johansson got mad.

She fumed in a statement to Vanity Fair , "The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning. I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships. Only a man, a.k.a. Brendan Tighe, would come up with a crazy story like that."

Yolanda Pecoraro

Yolanda Pecoraro was reportedly set up with Tom Cruise not once, but twice.

Pecoraro is a lifelong Scientologist and a struggling actress "known" for roles like "Sexy Brunette" in an episode of Greek and "sexy woman" in The Ugly Truth (2009). If nothing else, she could surely use the boost in name recognition.

Andrew Morton claimed in Cruise's unauthorized biography (via the  Daily Mail ) that Pecoraro briefly dated Cruise after his breakup with Penelope Cruz in 2004. It didn't last, likely in part because Pecoraro was only 19 at the time and Cruise was 42, but Cruise was reportedly "head over heels" for the stunner, allegedly even paying for extensive Scientology courses for her.

However, Scientology experts told the  National Enquirer (via the Daily Mail ) that, after Cruise's embarrassing split from Holmes, he'd likely find his next partner within the Church — and in entered Pecoraro again, described as a "Scientology princess" who was "perfect" for the actor. A source dished, "[The Church of Scientology wants] to show that Tom has rebounded fast and that his new wife is beautiful and steeped in Scientology. If the church decides to make Yolanda Tom's next wife, they'd certainly want her to have a child soon, so she could quickly be going from her modest apartment to a mansion in Beverly Hills with a baby on the way. And there's little doubt she'd do what's best for the church."

But their alleged romance apparently didn't work out because Pecoraro got engaged to Malcolm in the Middle star Chris Masterson in June 2018.

Kate Bosworth On Along For The Ride And Her Connection To Her Character - Exclusive Interview

Heidi looking down

Kate Bosworth takes a page out of her own life for her new character Heidi in "Along For the Ride." As a stepmom herself, it's no surprise that the role's positive depiction of the stepmom and stepdaughter relationship would appeal to Bosworth. So many pop culture portrayals of this relationship are hostile, and it's refreshing to see Netflix sidestep these tropes in the teen flick based on Sarah Dessen's book.

Bosworth made a name for herself in the early '00s with films like "Remember the Titans," "Blue Crush," "The Rules of Attraction," "21," and "Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!" after her breakout role on the TV show "Young Americans." She then landed as Lois Lane in "Superman Returns" in 2008. Later, she starred in movies like "Heist," the horror film "Before I Wake," and the Tyler Hoechlin thriller "The Domestics."

During an exclusive interview with The List, Kate Bosworth revealed what drew her to playing Heidi in "Along For the Ride" and how the role parallels her own life. She also dished on what it was like working with Andie MacDowell and how the movie portrays a more positive spin on stepmother relationships — and why that's important.

Defying stepmom tropes

I really love that your character completely sidetracks the two typical stepmom tropes of either being the villainous one or super ditzy. What was exciting about playing this intelligent woman who goes after what she wants while supporting her stepdaughter and giving her room to make mistakes as well?

Playing Heidi was such a true parallel to my own life. That was such a big draw for me in that I've been a stepmom for almost 11 years to a beautiful, young — well, she's still young, but she's a young woman now. She's 24 years old. I met her when she was about 12, and I have such a loving relationship with her biological mother. It was a real honor for me to raise her with her dad and her mom.

Our family has talked about this: "How can we shatter the stereotype of [the] evil stepmother or stepmother being pitted against biological mother?" Because I've lived this and because I've experienced what it means to live with love and to raise a healthy, happy, grounded young woman, I feel like it's such an important story to tell. It's such an important dynamic to explore so that people understand.

For example, her father and I are no longer together, but I will always, always, always be her stepmother. She even said, "I have two moms and a dad, and I was raised by a whole group of amazing people." I feel like there [are] so many blended families today. It's important to impart the message of raising someone with love and to make sure that you're keeping your eyes on the kid and not yourself, really.

A Badass woman IRL and onscreen

You've played so many badass and empowering women roles , from Lois Lane to Heidi. What are some of the joys of playing these roles, and are those characteristics that you look for when you take on a role?

I loved playing Heidi because, at first, I suppose what I look for is a duality in a character, having the vulnerability and also having a real strength. I was excited to play her because I don't often get the opportunity to explore comedy very much. I remember when I was reading the script, I was laughing out loud because I thought ... I remember meeting Jasper [Bosworth's stepdaughter] and [sounding so desperate] like, "Please like me. Hi, I'm Kate. Hi, Jasper. So nice to meet you."

Your voice, [goes] up several octaves, and you become this hyper weird human because you're desperate to be liked by a kid. So much of that I put into Heidi. She's a new mom, so she's barely getting any sleep. She's hardly taking care of herself, but she's trying to hold it all together, and she's desperate for this stepdaughter to like her.

There is a lot of me in her, but I love so much the reveal that while some people might think upon first glance that she's ditzy and you're not quite sure if she's got much depth there, you realize through the arc of [the] character and through the rest of the story what she's struggling with and how she ultimately overcomes it. The relationship between her and Auden is such a special one. I love working with Andie MacDowell and having that very special moment between stepmother and biological mother. It was such a personal story to me, but one that I feel is what will really connect with a lot of families today.

‘Top Gun’: 30 Things You Didn’t Know About the Tom Cruise Classic (Photos)

Fighter-pilot blockbuster was released on May 16, 1986

Top Gun

Now that “Top Gun” is revving up for a sequel , TheWrap counts down 30 facts about the iconic movie you may not have already known.

(The facts not directly cited in this gallery came from the 30th anniversary edition Blu-ray/DVD of “Top Gun.”)

kate bosworth tom cruise

1. The role of Maverick was written expressly for Cruise — whose performance in “All the Right Moves” gave the writers inspiration for the part.

kate bosworth tom cruise

2. Cruise was initially reluctant to take the role of Maverick, but his mind was immediately changed after his first time up in the air with The Blue Angels.

kate bosworth tom cruise

3. Val Kilmer initially turned down the part of Iceman until director Tony Scott tracked him down and passionately recruited him.

kate bosworth tom cruise

4. When it was in the casting phase, “Top Gun” became the hot title around town. Nearly all young Hollywood men wanted to be involved, including a very young Charlie Sheen , who was said to be willing to take any part, even a small one. (He didn’t get one.)

kate bosworth tom cruise

5. Scott’s original vision for the film was “‘Apocalypse Now’ in an aircraft carrier.” He later realized it was a “definite popcorn movie… the rock ‘n’ roll stars of the sky.”

kate bosworth tom cruise

6. The original script called for Goose’s death to be the result of a midair collision. The Navy wouldn’t approve that, so they changed it to a scenario that was more plausible, depicting an accident that actually happened (but didn’t result in death).

kate bosworth tom cruise

7. The look of the actors in the pilot program was inspired by Bruce Weber’s photography, specifically his first book featuring scantily clad (and some nude) male models in a military theme.

kate bosworth tom cruise

8. The original title of the film was “Top Guns” — plural.

kate bosworth tom cruise

9. Kelly McGillis’ love interest character, Charlie, was originally supposed to be an officer. But the Navy wouldn’t approve a script involving two officers fraternizing. Filmmakers needed the Navy’s involvement, so they changed her profession to that of a Navy consultant, one who assesses pilot performance.

kate bosworth tom cruise

10. Scott had to fight the studio to cast McGillis. Execs wanted a younger “more fashionable” actress to play opposite Cruise.

kate bosworth tom cruise

11. Remember John Stockwell, who plays Cougar in a memorable scene at the beginning of the film when he gets so scared he struggles to land his jet? He’s gone on to direct sun-soaked popcorn flicks like 2002’s “Blue Crush,” with Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez , and 2005’s “Into the Blue,” with Paul Walker and Jessica Alba , along with the 2006 horror movie “Turistas.”

kate bosworth tom cruise

12. The love scene was shot after filming wrapped. Yes, there was no love scene in the script!

kate bosworth tom cruise

13. McGillis’ hair was different by that time, she recalled in a 2013 interview, so that’s why the sexy sequence made use of silhouettes and dim lighting. (McGillis’ wrong hairdo is also why she wore a hat in the elevator sequence, also part of reshoots.)

kate bosworth tom cruise

14. McGillis, knew Kilmer before the movie, she revealed in the aforementioned interview. They went to Julliard together.

kate bosworth tom cruise

15. Encouraged by filmmakers to do so, the cast partied a whole lot during the production in order to get into character. “I remember it being one giant weekend as far as making the thing,” recalls Kilmer in the film’s DVD commentary.

kate bosworth tom cruise

16. Hanging out constantly, the lead cast also played basketball, tennis, and went to the driving range.

kate bosworth tom cruise

17. In order to keep their onscreen rivalry alive, either Cruise would join the group of partying cast mates or Kilmer would. But the two never hung out together.

kate bosworth tom cruise

18. According to Barry Tubb, who played Wolfman, the cast would pile into Kilmer’s van (a vehicle in which Kilmer claimed he lost his virginity). They would use it to “wreak havoc across the Mexican boarder” before racing back for their call time on set.

kate bosworth tom cruise

19. Kilmer ad-libbed when he coughed the line “bullshit” in the hangar scene.

kate bosworth tom cruise

20. Pilot Art Scholl was killed while performing a stunt during filming. He intentionally dove into a spin to capture it on a camera mounted inside the plane and failed to recover, making impact with the Pacific Ocean.

kate bosworth tom cruise

21. Cruise was nervous and stressed, feeling the pressure of carrying the film. “He was as out of his depth as I was,” recalled Scott.

kate bosworth tom cruise

22. Edwards and  Ryan , who play husband and wife in the film, also dated in real life.

kate bosworth tom cruise

23. Ryan was not Scott’s first choice to play Goose’s wife. The late director was initially reluctant to cast her because she had been a soap opera actress on “As the World Turns.”

kate bosworth tom cruise

24. The film originated from an article first published in California Magazine.

kate bosworth tom cruise

25. Jack Epps Jr. wrote the movie with Jim Cash, his writing partner on films like “The Secret of My Success” and “Turner & Hooch.” Epps decided “Top Gun” was more of a sports movie than a military film after he went for a real jet ride. “Things happen with such force,” he said of experiencing six Gs of force in midair. “This was one of the greatest athletic things that I’ve ever been involved with in my life.”

kate bosworth tom cruise

26. The so called “Top Gun” award for which the pilots in the film compete doesn’t actually exist in the real Navy.

kate bosworth tom cruise

27. “We’re paying $1 million for Tom Cruise so we gotta show some flesh,” recalled technical adviser Pete Pettigrew of what filmmakers said regarding the need for a locker room scene.

kate bosworth tom cruise

28. Then-Paramount executives, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Eisner , didn’t like the script. The film was sidelined until a new CEO, Ned Tanen, took over and greenlit it during a lunch meeting. He hadn’t even read the screenplay.

kate bosworth tom cruise

29. The actors who played pilots got certified and did a training course with the Navy, including riding in an F-14 jet. Rick Rossovich, who plays Slider, earned the nickname “Rock” after he almost sunk like one in a pool during pilot training before filming.

kate bosworth tom cruise

30. The Navy reported a 500 percent increase in applicants to its aviation program after the film came out, according to the 2004 book “Operation Hollywood: How the Pentagon Shapes and Censors the Movies.”

If you’ve made it this far, you get the Top Gun award of top Top Gun fans. Reward yourself with this history of the volleyball scene .

Show me the honeys!

A bevy of Hollywood beauties summoned for auditions to star opposite Tom Cruise were unwittingly vying for the role of his third wife, an explosive new book reports.

The clueless contestants invited to pursue the bogus part in the “Mission: Impossible” series included Scarlett Johansson, Kate Bosworth, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan — and bride-to-be Katie Holmes.

According to “Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief,” the frisky business began after the “Risky Business” star ended his three-year relationship with Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz in 2004.

Their split was reportedly in part over her failure to fully embrace Scientology.

Scarlett Johansson attends the 'Hitchcock' premiere in New York in November.

During a postbreakup trip to Madrid for the opening of a new church, the book reported, “Cruise heatedly complained to his sister that no one had been able to find him a new girlfriend.”

Cruise — whose marriages to actresses Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers ended in divorce — made the same complaint to Scientology leader/best friend David Miscavige.

The church’s head man wasted no time in conducting his own celebrity version of “The Bachelor,” the book reports.

Jessica Alba attends the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations announcement held at The Beverly Hilton in December.

Miscavige immediately instructed church members to scour the congregation for its best-looking female members, the book says.

A lawyer for Cruise insisted that the girlfriend gripes in Spain never happened.

The courting of Tinseltown talent on Cruise’s behalf reportedly came after the collapse of his relationship with “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara. The two went their separate ways after her refusal to join Scientology, reported Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright.

Kate Bosworth arrives at the Audi Golden Globe 2013 Kick Off Cocktail Party in January.

Cruise, now 50, turned his eye to actress Jennifer Garner — who instead married actor Ben Affleck in 2005.

His Scientologist matchmakers, under the ruse of tryouts for a part in a Cruise blockbuster, then invited the mostly A-list actresses to the “auditions” at the group’s Celebrity Center.

Cruise met Holmes in April 2005, leading to his infamous couch-jumping escapade with Oprah Winfrey, their marriage and the birth of their daughter, Suri.

Can you even imagine a Lindsay Lohan-Tom Cruise coupling?

Holmes, 34, split with Cruise in a divorce stunner in 2011, ending their five-year union.

According to the book, Cruise was earlier fixed up with Scientology member/actress Nazanian Boniadi, a 25-year-old beauty who was already dating someone else, a match that was first hinted at in Vanity Fair.

Church officials, intent on pairing the actress with Cruise, showed Boniadi proof that her boyfriend was cheating on her.

Nazanin Boniadi arrives to Amnesty International's 'Secret Policeman's Ball' in New York in March.

She broke off their relationship before boarding a flight to New York for a date with Cruise.

Their first night included an Empire State Building visit, dinner at Nobu, skating at Rockefeller Center and accommodations at the Trump Tower, the book reported.

The next day, she was asked to sign a nondisclosure agreement — an apparent sign of Cruise’s approval and her commitment to keeping her mouth shut about their relationship.

Church executive Tommy Davis informed the dark-haired beauty that her new role was keeping Cruise happy, according to the book.

“Davis warned her that if she did anything to upset Cruise, he would personally destroy her,” the book reported. “Davis and (Scientology official) Jessica Feshback were constantly tutoring her in how to behave toward the star.”

Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige speaks during the opening ceremony of the organization's new building in London in 2006.

But the relationship fizzled out, and Feshback ordered Boniadi to pack her belongings and get out of Cruise’s home. The ex-girlfriend last saw the cinematic superstar working out in his home gym, and never heard from him again.

When an emotionally overwrought Boniada confessed her love for Cruise to another Scientologist, the church hierarchy punished the actress by making her scrub public toilets with a toothbrush, the book reported.

'Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood & the Religion of Belief' by Lawrence Wright.

The church has denied the allegations of punishment against Boniadi for speaking about Cruise.

According to the book, church officials had a monetary interest in keeping their best-known member happy. He was a huge donor, providing Scientology with $3 million in 2004 alone. But Cruise’s interests extended beyond the church and the box office, the book reported.

Katie Holmes attends '12-12-12' concert at Madison Square Garden last month.

In 2003, he and Miscavige reportedly lobbied the Bush administration to employ Scientology methods in the No Child Left Behind initiative. The pair reportedly were discussing their effort when the talk turned to politics.

“If f—— Arnold (Schwarzenegger) can be governor, I could be President,” Cruise said.

“Well, absolutely, Tom,” replied Miscavige.

Cruise’s attorney denied that the conversation ever took place.

The book also detailed Cruise’s attempts to recruit director Steven Spielberg into the Scientology fold. The Oscar winner directed Cruise in the remake of “War of the Worlds.”

Tom Cruise with Mimi Rogers in 1986.

Cruise became enraged after learning about a seemingly innocuous conversation between Spielberg and fellow director Paul Haggis during shooting on the movie.

“I’ve met all these Scientologists, and they seem like the nicest people,” Spielberg commented.

“Yeah, we keep all the evil ones in the closet,” joked Haggis — who abandoned Scientology in 2009 and became one of its most public critics.

Tom Cruise with Nicole Kidman in 1999.

Haggis claimed he was summoned by church management for a tongue-lashing over the remarks, followed by orders to write an immediate note of contrition to Cruise.

The Academy Award-winning screenwriter’s first draft was deemed lacking, with Haggis then penning an even-sorrier “I’m sorry” letter to Cruise.

Penelope Cruz whispers in Tom Cruise's ear upon arriving at the Odeon theatre in Liecester Square for the London premiere of 'The Last Samurai' in 2004.

A Spielberg publicist said the director doesn’t recall the brief exchange with Haggis, and Cruise’s lawyer said the actor does not remember the incident.

But Haggis — who also agreed to explain to Spielberg that he was joking — was stunned by the overreaction to the whole thing.

“It was a joke,” he said.

Kate Bosworth at the premiere of 'Netflix's Along for the Ride.'

Premiering on Netflix beginning May 6th is the new drama ‘ Along for the Ride ,’ which is based on the novel by Sarah Dessen.

The movie was written and directed by Sofia Alvarez . and follows Auden ( Emma Pasarow ), the summer before college, as she meets the mysterious Eli ( Belmont Camel i), a fellow insomniac. While the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two embark on a nightly quest to help Auden experience the fun, carefree teen life she never knew she wanted.

In addition to Pasarow and Cameli, the movie also features Kate Bosworth (‘ Superman Returns ’), Andie MacDowell (‘ Groundhog Day ’), and Dermot Mulroney (‘ About Schmidt ’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actress Kate Bosworth about her work on ‘Along for the Ride.’

You can read our full interview with Kate Bosworth below or watch our interview with Bosworth, Emma Pasarow, and Belmont Cameli by clicking on the video player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your character, Heidi and how you approached playing the role?

Kate Bosworth: Well, you know what was interesting was that one of the thrills for me in being a part of this movie is that in many ways the relationships had sort of paralleled my real life. I'm a stepmom to a beautiful now 24-year-old young woman named Jasper. I met her when she was about 12. So, I saw her through all the teen stuff, all the stuff that Auden goes through.

I'm no longer with her father, but he was about 13 years older than me so there was an age difference there as there is with me and Dermot. I became very close to Jasper's biological mom, which my character ultimately has such a significant relationship with Andie MacDowell's character.

For me, the very interesting and important messaging behind the movie was to shatter the stereotypical evil stepmother relationship because my stepdaughter will say all the time, "Oh my gosh, I had two moms. It was the best experience. And I had a dad," and they all kind of rallied to different roles of significance in her life. In that way, I think we were able to all pitch in and really lead with love to help fortify a very, I hope, healthy and happy young lady.

MF: So, your real-life experience really prepared you to play this part, is that correct?

KB: Well, it was amazing how many similarities we have. I mean, even to play Heidi, she's such a fun character to play. I haven't had the opportunity to do much comedy in a while, and so to be able to inhabit her was great. She's so spazzy, you know what I mean? So much of it is lack of sleep and she wants so badly to be liked by Auden.

I remember I was about 28 years old when I met Jasper and she was 12. It meant so much to me for her to just like me, you know what I mean? To feel loved by me. So, I'm sure that there were quite a few experiences when I first met her where I was like, "Hi, how are you? Oh my God, I'm Kate. Blah, blah, blah." You kind of are this person that's taken over.

I remember taking her to a store. We'd had lunch the first time then we met, and I looked at her and I was like, "Should we go get some candy?" She was like, "Yes." So, we went to a store and just bought so much candy and then ended up coming home and eating all the candy and watching funny movies.

So, I really understood where Heidi was coming from. I think always the challenge with playing anybody who's kind of bigger comedically, is to find the place of grounding even within that spastic nature. I got it. I totally understood. I lived that life. So, in many ways, this was my nod to my relationship with my own stepdaughter.

MF: Can you talk about the family dynamics in the film between the different characters, and working with Dermot Mulroney?

KB: It's so funny when Dermot and I were shooting the movie, he's like, "Audiences are not going to like me." I laughed, and I was like, "No, you have your redemption." But I do think what's so nice about this story that is, and again, this is so significant in my own life, was overcoming the traditional stereotypes that a biological mother and stepmother should be at odds with one another. I'm so lucky that I was able to have such a close relationship with Christmases together, Jasper's graduation, and the big moments in life.

I believe as long as you're leading with love and your focus is on that next generation, and creating the healthiest, happiest and safest place for the kid, then you're doing something right. I think there's a lot of people that get quite selfish, and the truth is it really does need to be about the kid. I think we were all very committed to raising her that way.

So, while I think all the characters have a lot going on, I liked that there were flaws. I like that Andie MacDowell, who plays Auden's mom, is real, flawed and has these crazy expectations of her biological kid and the kid just feels all this pressure. Then she goes to Colby, and her dad's kind of there but not really there. He should be more present and he's definitely self-obsessed and definitely selfish.

Then you have Heidi who has a newborn and she's trying to make it all work, and she's trying to make everybody happy. Then ultimately, she's like, "I can't do this anymore." I mean, I think that there is something very real about those dynamics in today's world. So many people experience a blended family in one way or another.

I think Sofia Alvarez, the filmmaker, just did such a beautiful job, obviously, honoring the book. But we talked a lot about wanting to make very defined, fun characters, but also keeping them very real and grounded.

Kate bosworth's 10 best performances, ranked by rotten tomatoes.

Kate Bosworth has been working in the entertainment industry since she was 14. She's been in many movies during that time, here are her best.

Kate Bosworth has been working in the entertainment industry since she was fourteen years old. Her first break came from an open call in New York City for the film,  The Horse Whisperer.  This film needed a young and experienced horseback rider, and Kate Bosworth ended up being the perfect girl for the job. From there, Kate started to pursue the industry more, eventually moving from the east coast to Los Angeles, where more roles would be available to her.

After a few supporting roles, Bosworth became a household name with the success of the surfer teen movie,  Blue Crush   in the early 2000s. Since this breakout role, Kate has starred in a number of films and series, and Rotten Tomatoes has ranked some of her best.

The Rules Of Attraction (43%)

This early 2000's feature film deals with sex and sexuality, specifically in a college setting.  This  dark comedy stars just about every up and coming teen heartthrob of the late '90s and early 2000s, including James van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, Ian Somerhalder, and Kate Bosworth.

In this film, Kate plays Kelly, a girl who Sean, played by James van Der Beek, woos at a party and ends up going back to his room with him.

Win A Date With Tad Hamilton (54%)

In this romantic comedy starring Bosworth opposite the very dreamy, Josh Duhamel , Kate Bosworth plays Rosalee, who is just your average small-town girl working at a Piggly-Wiggly in middle America.

Rosalee's life completely changes when she wins a date with the fictional movie star, Tad Hamilton, played by Duhamel. By the end of the film, Rosalee is faced with a difficult choice, choosing between the life she knows or the lifestyle of the rich and famous.

Blue Crush (61%)

This surfing movie is what made Kate Bosworth a household name. In the film, Kate plays Anne Marie, who, with the help of her friends, looks after her younger sister after their mother leaves them for a new adventure with her new boyfriend.

Anne Marie works at a hotel to make ends meet, but her real passion is surfing. Anne Marie gets the chance to compete in a surf competition on Hawaii's famous North Shore and if she wins, it could make a real change in her and her sister's lives.

Before I Wake (63%)

This horror movie thriller was written and directed by Mike Flanagan , the man responsible for the horrific smash hit,  The Haunting of Hill House .  This film is almost as terrifying as Flanagan's now-famous series and tells the story of a couple who foster a young boy after their biological son dies.

Kate Bosworth plays Jessie, the grieving mother trying to move on with her life after the tragedy. The performances in this movie, especially from Bosworth were praised by both fans and critics alike.

The Girl In The Park (71%)

This dramatic feature film stars Kate Bosworth as Louise and Sigourney Weaver as Julia Sandburg. Julia lost a daughter and was never able to recover from that loss.

RELATED: Sigourney Weaver's 10 Best Movies, According To IMDb

In the years since the tragedy, Julia has distanced herself from everyone and everything, including her husband and her son. When Julia meets Louise by chance, all of her old wounds start to re-open and Louise's own troubled past doesn't help matters.

Remember The Titans (73%)

This Disney movie tells the story of the first football team in the south to have white players and Black players. It's a very G-rated version of what segregation was like in the South in the 1960s and the steps and fights it took to dismantle such a horrible practice.

In this movie , Kate Bosworth plays Emma, who is dating star quarterback Gerry. Initially, Emma doesn't like the changes her boyfriend and his team have made, but she eventually comes around and realizes how wrong she was.

The Horse Whisperer (74%)

This was Kate Bosworth's first movie role and she shines as Judith, who at the beginning of the film is best friends with Grace, played by a young Scarlett Johansson.

RELATED: Scarlett Johansson: Her 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Films, According To IMDb

Grace and Judith are riding their horses one day when they get into a terrible accident and Judith and her horse are killed, while Grace and her horse are severely injured. Grace struggles to recover from the accident and losing her friend, but with the help of the animals she loves is able to do so.

Superman Returns (75%)

This superhero film is the sixth and final installment of the original  Superman   franchise. The story takes place five years after the last time fans saw Superman.

The hero has returned to earth to find that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, played by Kate Bosworth, has moved on with her life and his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor, played by Kevin Spacey, has plotted to kill the superhero and take over North America.

Still Alice (85%)

This film, based on the novel by the same name, stars Julianne Moore in the title role of Alice, a woman who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's following her 50th birthday.

For her work in this film, Julianne Moore earned multiple awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actress. This film also stars Alec Baldwin as Alice's husband, John, and Kate Bosworth, Kristen Stewart, and Hunter Parrish as Alice's children.

The Domestics (100%)

This horror, post-apocalyptic film holds a strong 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film takes place a few months after the American government launched chemical warfare on its own people. The world as most would recognize it has been destroyed, and in its place, something much darker has appeared.

In the movie, Kate Bosworth plays Nina who is not only struggling to survive but also struggling to maintain her relationship with her now ex-husband, Mark, played by Tyler Hoechlin, who she divorced before the world ended.

Katie Holmes: The Actress Enters a Weird World Called TomKat

She’s landed the role of a lifetime—beautiful bride of the world’s biggest movie star. What’s so weird about that?

cear_holmes_01_v.jpg

The statistics on arranged marriage are surprising. In every country where it is still common practice, including Afghanistan, India, Iraq, Iran and, to a lesser extent, Japan, an arranged marriage has a higher success rate than a so-called “love marriage.”

It’s impossible to say what this augurs for Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise . Of course, theirs isn’t an arranged marriage—though it was certainly arranged quickly. The awesomely public couple had all of six weeks, during much of which Holmes was on the Batman Begins junket, to decide that they loved each other, that they wanted to spend their lives together and that they would buck Hollywood convention, to say nothing of common sense, and sing their joy from the mountaintops (or from flashbulb-blitzed press conferences, red carpets and vastly popular TV talk shows). Arranged marriages are measured, often solemn affairs; the fist-pumping pomp of the Cruise-Holmes union is another story. And the more times Holmes tells it, the stranger it sounds.

“I’ve found the man of my dreams,” says the 26-year-old actress, sitting in a bathrobe as a manicurist paints her nails the color of kryptonite and a stylist teases her hair into wavelets in preparation for her W photo shoot. It’s 8 a.m., and Holmes looks astonishingly fresh for a woman who taped several television shows the previous day before heading back to Cruise’s New York apartment, putting on her sweatpants and UGG slippers, and settling in for a late movie with her sweetheart. “From the moment I met him,” she continues, “it just felt like I’d known him forever. I was blown away. He’s the most incredible man. He’s so generous and kind, and he helps so many people, and, um, he makes me laugh like I’ve never laughed, and he’s a great friend.…”

This is how the conversation begins; this is also how it continues, and how it ends. No question can do much to change its course.

Do you worry that this might be a rebound romance for either of you?

“I’ve never met anyone like Tom,” Holmes replies, her beautiful green eyes focused on nothing in particular.

Do you ever wonder whether this is just a honeymoon phase?

“Tom and I will always be in our honeymoon phase.”

Did you learn anything in your previous relationship (five years with actor Chris Klein, which came to an end when they called off their engagement this past winter) that has been a benefit to this one?

“Chris and I care about each other and we’re still friends. Tom is the most incredible man in the world.”

Do you feel that, with more relationship experience, you get better at resolving conflicts?

“Meeting Tom—I’m just exhilarated. He makes me laugh, we have fun, we understand each other, everything is so aligned. I feel so lucky and so—like I’ve been given such a gift, such a gift, you know?” She pauses. “And it’s just really amazing.”

If Holmes were actually answering the questions posed—rather than simply reciting the same mantralike love letter—she’d be making a somewhat provocative point: Her relationship is not like other relationships, with their conflicts, compromises and complications; there will be no apology flowers, nights spent on the couch or couples therapy for these two (as a practicing Scientologist, Cruise strongly disapproves of psychiatry).

Is there anything you guys don’t have in common?

“You know, we appreciate each other.”

Has it been a challenge to make his kids feel comfortable?

“They’re just exceptional people.”

Isn’t it an adjustment to move in with someone—and after only a month? (In late May, Holmes packed up her apartment in Hollywood’s El Royale complex and moved into Cruise’s Beverly Hills manse.)

“He’s the man of my dreams.”

Does he leave his dirty socks on the bedroom floor? Something? Anything?

The lady doth protest not nearly enough. It’s impossible, even for a moment, to slip under the halo of cartoon hearts dancing around Holmes’s head—which partly explains why the media has so relished the project of puncturing her happiness ever since it was first broadcast, from the David di Donatello awards in Rome, on April 29. (Even People magazine, a typically unwavering Hollywood celebrant, has published polls indicating that the majority of its readers believe “TomKat” is a hoax.) Though Holmes’s star has surely risen, its motion is more akin to the teacup ride at the fairground: a spin that brings queasiness, not thrills.

Anyone who has seen photos from the couple’s June tour of European capitals in support of their summer movies will recognize the tall, cold-eyed Jessica Rodriguez, a third wheel at all of Holmes’s recent public appearances. Rodriguez, 29, was described to me as Holmes’s “Scientologist chaperone,” and it was clear that she would be on hand during our interview despite my protests. Polite and restrained but alert to troublesome questions, Rodriguez chimes in only to offer an amen following one of Holmes’s rhapsodies. (“You adore him,” Rodriguez says after the actress explains that she can’t keep her hands off Cruise.) But she rises from her chair when Holmes is asked how she feels about the widespread disbelief in her new union.

“The truth is, we don’t read that stuff because it’s just rude,” Rodriguez says—referring to rumors that Cruise made a financial arrangement with Holmes (after auditioning a field of other young starlets, including Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba and Kate Bosworth). When I suggest that the televised hyperbolizing of their happiness may have undercut its credibility, Rodriguez asks, “Have you ever been in love? You just want to share it with the world.” I suggest that many couples prefer to cherish the feeling privately, especially in the delicate first months. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, whatever the nature of their relationship, come to mind.

“But why can’t they go public, you know what I mean?” Rodriguez continues. “Like, Brad and Angelina—that’s just a shame for them. Right, Katie?”

“Yeah. I mean, I’m just so happy,” Holmes says in reply as a makeup artist begins to powder her cheeks. (Holmes’s skin, in contrast to the evidence of a recent barrage of embarrassing tabloid photos, is perfect.) “And I love celebrating our happiness. I can’t keep it in.”

Meanwhile, the tabloids report that friends back in Toledo, Ohio, where Holmes grew up, are worried about her. (“People who say that aren’t my friends,” she says.) They wonder whether Cruise is sabotaging her career by steering her away from roles that deal with subject matter that Scientology disapproves of—in particular, the role of the drug-addled Edie Sedgwick in George Hickenlooper’s upcoming Factory Girl , which Holmes pulled out of. “Tom’s so supportive and he’s such an inspiration,” she protests. “I just felt that the role wasn’t right for me, and in light of my Batman Begins schedule and everything, it was just not the right time. When I pick roles, I ask, first, Is this a story that I want to tell? Can I help move this story along, and will I be an asset to it? I’m excited to keep expanding and finding different roles to play.” What about a film with Cruise? “That would be such an honor. Such an honor.”

Cruise may not be imposing his will on Holmes’s career, but, with Rodriguez’s help, he appears to have made a strong bid for her soul. After the interview, when I ask Rodriguez how long she’s worked with Holmes—reports call her a longtime employee of the Church of Scientology—she waves her hand and says, “Oh, no, we’re just best friends….Well, Katie has a lot of friends.” And how long have you been friends? “Oh, a while,” Rodriguez answers. “I don’t know.”

It turns out the two women were introduced only six weeks earlier—right around the time when Holmes met Cruise. (Holmes prefers to keep the details of the couple’s first date to herself, but Cruise is said to have invited her to a sushi dinner on his plane.) Rodriguez comes from a family of wealthy Bay area Scientologists; she attended a boarding school in Oregon linked to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, then went to work for the church, reportedly attaining membership in the Sea Org—Scientology’s elite religious order, whose members commit to the church for one billion years—in 1998. No one close to Holmes will venture to say exactly what Rodriguez’s role in the actress’s life is these days.

On the day we meet, Holmes tells me she’s not a Scientologist. (Three days later, in Europe, she will announce that she has converted.) “You know, it’s really exciting,” the actress says of the religion. “I just started auditing”—Scientology’s word for receiving spiritual counseling—“and I’m taking some courses, and I really like it. I feel it’s really helping. What I like about it is that, you know, I was raised Catholic, and you can be a Catholic and a Scientologist, Jewish and a Scientologist.” Holmes went to Notre Dame Academy, a Catholic high school in Toledo, and was accepted at Columbia University before she landed the role of the lovelorn tomboy Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek . Her parents, devout Catholics, are said to be a weekly fixture at Christ the King church in Toledo. “I’m learning,” Holmes says, as the makeup artist applies eye shadow, “to celebrate my own spirit, my own being.”

No pressure from Cruise, she swears: “That’s really ludicrous because, I mean, you have to know Tom. He is the most loving, generous man who… first of all, he wants to help people. He doesn’t put pressure on people. He is the kindest, smartest, most adoring man. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be with him.”

As if that weren’t already perfectly clear, just then a security guard lumbers into the dressing room and presents Holmes with a giant silver box tied in a thick purple ribbon. A small crowd gathers to watch her gleefully tear open the package and pluck out a Chanel diamond necklace—a gift, naturally, from Cruise. “He’s my man! He’s my man!” she screams, then jumps up on her chair to do an impression of her fiancé’s now-famous sofa shtick from Oprah .

People begin to cheer. “This is your moment!” cries the manicurist.

“I can do splits too,” Holmes says, jumping down and splaying herself across the floor. On that note, I suggest, we should probably get the photo shoot started.

“On that note,” she replies, “I love him.”

Kate Boswort h is taking it back to her Blue Crush days. In honor of the film's 20th anniversary, the 39-year-old actress reflected on what the movie means to her -- and to fans.

"20 years ago, my world changed because of this movie!" she wrote alongside throwback photos from the movie, which included co-stars Michelle Rodriguez and Sanoe Lake. "And over those two decades, I’ve learned just how very rare it is to experience something like Blue Crush … so unique, intimate and true. If there are certain experiences that make up the vital organs of your life, this movie undoubtedly holds my heart. Throughout my career, there is nothing I appreciate more than hearing the love and excitement for this movie- the stories and the insights on how it has touched and shaped your lives."

Bosworth went on to share why she thinks the film continues to resonate with viewers even two decades later.

"There are so many films that come and go… why the affect of one over another? And when I think about the beautiful and unique influence of Blue Crush , I think it may come down to the purity of the thing," she wrote. "The writing of it, the making of it, the depth of the friendships, the faith, the determination, the dedication, hard work, and passion. The freedom and the adventure stemming from a young girl, coming of age, and realizing that courage and fear, ferocity and vulnerability, love for another and love for self - can all exist in the same breath. It’s the knowing and the trusting and the doing. The being brave. The free fall. The wings - And the flight."

The actress concluded her post with a sweet shoutout to Rodriguez and Lake. "Ps, If you notice the weird tape on these photos, it’s because they were taped to Sanoe’s journal for many years (probably still are :)" she wrote. "My soul sisters for life, I feel you in my laughter every single day. And suddenly there we are again, on the shores of Sunset Beach. 💙"

In May, Bosworth spoke to ET about her desire to reunite with Rodriguez and Lake for a Blue Crush sequel .

“I would love that,” she gushed. “Sanoe [Lake], Michelle [Rodriguez] and I always talk about it. We would love to make it happen. So, I don’t know. Let’s get it out there.”

Tom Cruise's 'wife auditions': Top female stars took screen tests that were actually intended to pick new partner, claims new Scientology book

  • A controversial new book claims that Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Kate Bosworth were 'auditioned' to be Tom Cruise's wife
  • He eventually settled upon Katie Holmes in 2005
  • According to 'Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison Belief', Cruise also harbored political ambitions toward the White House

The Church of Scientology has vehemently denied claims made in a sensational new book that Tom Cruise auditioned a host of Hollywood beauties including Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Kate Bosworth to be his wife before settling on Katie Holmes.

Allegedly disappointed by his split from Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz in 2004 after she failed to embrace Scientology, Cruise, 50, allowed senior members of the church to summon the unwitting stars to read for a non-existent part in the 'Mission: Impossible' series.

According to 'Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison Belief', the Top Gun star initiated the unusual casting couch-style marriage interviews after a complaint to his sister at a Scientology church opening in Madrid that no one had been able to find him a new girlfriend.

The Hollywood mega-star also allegedly made the same complaint to Scientologist leader and his best friend David Miscavige after his three year relationship with Cruz ended, who according to the book wasted no time in beginning the search for a suitable Mrs. Cruise.

Lawyers for Tom Cruise have vehemently insisted that no such conversations ever occurred while he was in Spain.

However, the tell-all book, penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright, alleges that Scientologist matchmakers arranged for 'auditions' at the organisation's Celebrity Center in Los Angeles and invited the bevy of what were young and promising actresses.

The book claims that each of the girls including hell-raiser Lohan, who was 18 in 2004, Alba, who is now happily married with two children and Johansson, were not chosen and in 2005 Cruise instead met Katie Holmes and then infamously jumped on Oprah Winfrey's couch.

Holmes, who is now 34, split from Tom cruise in 2012 and took primary custody of their child, Suri.

The book also claims that prior to the auditions of the would-be stars, Cruise was hooked up with British-Iranian actress Nazanin Boniadi, who is now 32.

Vanity Fair magazine's special correspondent Maureen Orth reported that Shelly Miscavige, the wife of David Miscavige was part of the search to find Tom Cruise a suitable girlfriend.

Did they are didn't they? FBI remain tight lipped on alleged inconclusive Scientology investigation that began in 2009

  • According to the Tampa Bay Times in mid 2009, two FBI agents based in Los Angeles quietly started investigating the church's treatment of its workers. Investigators continued through 2010 and into 2011. It was the FBI's first known criminal investigation of Scientology in 30 years.
  • The agents focused on possible human trafficking — obtaining labor by force or the threat of force within Scientology, specifically the SeaOrg group.
  • The FBI won't confirm it investigated the church.
  • Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw said, 'The church has no knowledge that this 'examining' ever occurred.'
  • Two agents traveled to several states and questioned dozens of former Sea Org members as well as others familiar with church operations.
  • In the end however, after two years of work the FBI's criminal investigation yielded no charges.
  • One church whistle-blower Mike Rinder, who was one of the FBI's confidential informants alleged David Miscavige physically assaulted him 50 times during his years in the Sea Org. The church denies Miscavige ever hit anyone.
  • Rinder said he also spent extended periods in forced confinement.
  • Witnesses told the FBI that social time at SeaOrg was limited. Cellphones were prohibited and Internet access denied, except in rare circumstances. Mail was censored. Passports locked away.
  • Sea Org security guards watched the perimeter fencing, which was equipped with motion sensors and topped in places with spikes and razor wire.
  • Dozens of workers tried running away, some repeatedly. But Sea Org pursuit teams caught most.

The magazine contended that Boniadi was convinced by Scientology leaders that she had been selected for a project that would help further her religion and would lead to her meeting 'world leaders' and having an influential role in the church.

Allegedly, top Scientology official Greg Wilhere told the actress to darken her hair, remove her orthodontic braces and that she break up with her long term boyfriend, who was also part of the controversial religion and with whom she was reportedly deeply in love.

When she refused to do that, Wilhere allegedly showed Boniadi evidence that her boyfriend had cheated on her and that led her to break up their relationship.

She was flown to New York to meet Cruise and he swept her off her feet with an amazing series of dates that included visits to the Empire State Building, dinner at Nobu, skating at the Rockefeller Center and nights spent at the Trump Tower.

In fact, she so impressed Cruise that he asked her to sign a nondisclosure agreement, which is generally acknowledged to be a sign that the actor is keen to persue the relationship and make it serious.

Tommy Davis, a Scientology executive, told Boniadi that her new life with Cruise was all about keeping him happy.

'Davis warned her that if she did anything to upset Cruise, he would personally destroy her,' the book reported.

'Davis and (Scientology official) Jessica Feshback were constantly tutoring her in how to behave toward the star.'

The auditions for the role of Tom Cruise's new wife allegedly took place at the Church of Scientology's Celebrity Center in Los Angeles

However, the pairing did not work out and Feshback is said to have ordered Boniadi to pack her belongings and leave Cruise's home.

She is said to have last seen the Hollywood actor working out in his home gym and has never heard from him again.

And when she confessed her love for Cruise to another Scientologist, the church sent her to Clearwater in Florida and asked her to scrub public toilets with a toothbrush, the book reported.

The church has denied all allegations of cruelty towards Boniadi for speaking to anyone about Tom Cruise.

The reason for the unusual auditions organised by the Church of Sceintology stem from their interest in keeping their best known member happy.

He is also a huge donor to the religion, reportedly handing over $3 million in 2004 alone.

Before his marriage to Holmes, Cruise and Miscavige harbored political ambitions for the actor, alleges the book.

'If f******g Arnold (Schwarzenegger) can be governor, I could be President,' said Cruise.

'Well, absolutely, Tom,' replied Miscavige.

Lawyers for Cruise have denied that converstaion ever took place.

The book also details Cruise's failed attempts to try and recruit Steven Spielberg into the Scientology fold after the Oscar winning director cast the actor in 'War of the Worlds'.

However, Cruise became angered after her learnt of a conversation between Spielberg and Paul Haggis, the director of the Oscar winning movie 'Crash'.

'I've met all these Scientologists, and they seem like the nicest people,' Spielberg is alleged to have said reports the New York Daily News.

'Yea, we keep all the evil ones in the closet,' replied Haggis, who at the time was a Scientologist before leaving the church in 2009.

Haggis says that he was called in by the church executives for a dressing down over the remarks and ordered to write a letter of apology to Cruise.

When his first draft was rejected, Haggis was made to write an even more contrite letter to Tom Cruise.

A Spielberg publicist said the director doesn’t recall the brief exchange with Haggis, and Cruise’s lawyer said the actor does not remember the incident.

When Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan & Kate Bosworth Auditioned To Become Tom Cruise’s Wife, Only To Get Rejected

A few years back, a book based on scientology revealed how an audition was held to choose the right wife for tom.

kate bosworth tom cruise

Tom Cruise is undeniably one of the most-celebrated actors at the moment but looks like he has had an interesting journey in the film industry so far. He has lately been promoting sequel film Top Gun: Maverick and as a part of it, has been in the news for quite interesting details. A few years back, a book based on Scientology revealed how an audition was held to choose the right wife for Tom after his split with Penelope Cruz.

For the unversed, Cruise has lately been in the news for his upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick and looks like a specific scene from the film’s trailer is now garnering a lot of attention on social media. The short segment in the trailer where the actor is seen flying a plane got a lot of attention as most people assumed that Cruise was the one to drive it. One of the producers, however, recently refuted the rumours, clarifying that it was a body double.

According to a report by Daily Mail in 2013, Tom Cruise was specifically mentioned in the book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison Belief which stirred up a massive debate amongst the audience. The book, which was written by Lawrence Wright, mentioned Tom complained to his close friend David Miscavige, who was a leader at Scientology and he decided to hold auditions to find the new Mrs Cruise.

kate bosworth tom cruise

The auditions were reportedly held at Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles and several Hollywood celebs including Scarlett Johansson , Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan & Kate Bosworth were a part of it. Lohan, who was just 18 at that time, was one of the many women who were rejected before Tom Cruise chose Katie Holmes as his life partner in 2005.

What do you think about this bizzare audition for Tom Cruise? Let us know in the comments.

Cool To Be Kind

Kate bosworth on kind.est, creativity in crisis, and her new frontiers.

kate bosworth tom cruise

When COVID-19 first took grip of the globe early last spring, a close friend of Kate Bosworth’s issued the Hollywood actress a month-long challenge: to meditate every single day. “I wanted to turn inside out because traditionally my strength has not been a quiet mind!” Bosworth tells me over the phone from her home in Los Angeles. Yet, she stuck with it, thanks in large part to 10 Percent Happier — “an app for meditation skeptics,” much like herself, she notes with a laugh.

“Sometimes I feel like I’m thinking of so many different things that I miss the moment,” she continues. “I didn’t realize how much that was happening until I started to really dig into mindfulness.” At the end of that first month, a funny thing happened: The practice had taken root so deeply that now — nearly a year later — it’s still an essential part of her daily routine.

While Bosworth’s inner voice has since mellowed out, even a pandemic hasn’t lessened her output. “Like everyone, I feel the emotional rollercoaster from day to day,” Bosworth says, emphasizing the devastating impact of a disease that has already claimed the lives of over two million people worldwide. (That her parents are over 65 and that her mother suffers from an autoimmune disorder has been a constant source of anxiety.) Ultimately, she continues, the past eleven months have allowed her a chance to channel her creativity in new and even more meaningful ways.

“We couldn’t sit around and watch a year pass by and press pause,” says Bosworth, who has recently adopted a pandemic uniform of super-soft Hardvark t-shirts, her husband’s slouchy Levi jeans, and white Reebok sneakers. “I think that there was an incredible opportunity this year to move inward and a huge opportunity for growth.” True to form, Bosworth—never one to limit the possibility that her self-expression might inspire others—has been sharing that creative process over the last year.

kate bosworth

Take, for instance, Kind.est, the website that she launched in April 2020. Inspired by the idea of connection across space and time, she first started imagining how she might do that in her own corner of the internet after losing her grandmother. “I never had the appropriate time set aside for it, but all the sudden I thought, ‘Well, if ever there’s a time, I should really do this now,’” recalls Bosworth.

With this project, the 38-year-old is granting her hundreds of thousands of fans and followers unprecedented and unfiltered access to her innermost thoughts, influences, and inspirations. “I think a lot of people see public figures and they think there must be a team of people behind the curtain, but every word is written by me, every photo is taken from me… It really is self-expression,” she reveals. In other words, don’t expect a Bosworth-branded Goop down the line. “I don’t have a two-year plan,” she admits with a laugh.

For now, she writes about what’s on her mind (and her skin), whether it be a rose-gold highlighter from Westman Atelier; a recipe for chicken piccata, the first meal she cooked for her now 23-year-old stepdaughter, Jasper; or, an interview with Amanda Gorman , which was published five months before the Youth Poet Laureate delivered her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” at the inauguration of President Joe Biden in January 2021.

kate bosworth tom cruise

“I knew when I met her: This girl is going to change the world — and it’s only a matter of time before everyone else in the world realizes it, too,” Bosworth recalls of her introduction to Gorman at a 2018 dinner organized by Vital Voices, an organization dedicated to advancing female leaders.

“She and I sort of became best friends,” she says with a laugh, before taking a more serious tone. “When I watched her, as everyone else did, just move us all and unite us all [at the inauguration], I was bursting with pride. She’s a deeply knowledgeable human being, but the breadth and the depth of her soul goes far beyong intellect…. She’s here in the world to communicate to us and to help us communicate to ourselves and to communicate to others.”

Much the same could be said about Bosworth herself, who formed Make Pictures Productions with her husband, Michael Polish, four years ago in order to create the kinds of films that may otherwise go unseen. ( Nona , the 2017 drama that tells the story of a young Honduran woman sold into human trafficking, was their first movie).

“Imagine the number of scripts and projects that never came to fruition because we don’t have the gender equality or the diversity that we need to be able to tell the stories that are going to connect in a real way with our world,” she explains.

“I purposely wanted to be involved in every stage, so I could say be in these rooms and be more involved in the decision making of the stories that we see and consume.”

kate bosworth

It’s a drive that Bosworth perhaps first unearthed while auditioning for her breakout role as Anne Marie, a champion surfer from Hawaii, in the 2002 film, Blue Crush . “It was a defining moment in my career because, understandably, the decision makers behind that movie didn’t see me as believably playing that character because I’d never touched a surfboard in my life,” she remembers, laughing. (A childhood equestrian, Bosworth was perhaps more at home on the set of her very first film, 1998’s Horse Whisperer .) Nevertheless, she was not deterred.

After tracking down a surf instructor in the Yellow Pages, she drove to Malibu every day for four straight weeks, where she spent seven hours a day learning how to master the sport. When the studio executives finally came to watch her, though, Bosworth didn’t catch a single wave. “I fell over and over and over again and I thought, Wow, I really blew that ,” she recalls. However, her determination outshone even her worst wipeouts and she landed the role that catapulted the then 18-year-old to global stardom.

“Now, I always say to anyone who asks for advice, ‘Never underestimate tenacity because there’s a lot of talented people in the world, but the willpower of keeping an athletic-like focus on anything that you do, that tenacity will normally be the edge,’” she says.

kate bosworth

Most recently, Bosworth has brought that lionhearted tenacity to the forthcoming television series, Bring on the Dancing Horses , which she wrote, financed, and produced alongside Polish, and also stars in. (She last appeared on the small screen in Netflix’s 2019 sci-fi miniseries The I-Land .) Though Polish had initially conceived he show to center around a male contract killer, he had a change of heart early last spring.

“He looked at me and was like, ‘Oh my god, this character would be so much cooler if it would be you as a woman. What am I even thinking?!’ It was such a lightbulb moment for him,” recalls Bosworth. In the role, she exacts her own brand of justice as she crosses people off of her list with an unnerving calm — not unlike a female Clint Eastwood (albeit with a much glowier complexion).

“We thought, ‘What would happen if we took the western genre, which is predominantly male led, [as our starting point]?’” Bosworth says of the production, which was shot this past fall in a quarantine bubble in the backwoods of Montana. It was a fitting project for the couple, who spend half the year at their lakeside ranch in Bigfork. (They also celebrated their wedding at the Ranch at Rock Creek.)

“There’s a lot of innate western qualities in both him and me,” she explains. “We really thrive on breaking boundaries, [asking] ‘What’s just beyond? What’s out there?’ I think that’s so much of what connects us deeply ‘cause you have someone who’s saying, ‘Let’s take that leap.”

kate bosworth

Though Bosworth and Polish are still searching for buyers for the ten-episode series, in their minds, the choice to explore this new frontier has already paid off. “It was beautiful and inspiring and electric,” Bosworth notes of the two-month-long filming experience, which was the first production on which many of the show’s actors and crew worked all year. “It was like this beautiful coming together of why we all love to do what we do, which is to create.”

Bosworth muses, “Sometimes it does take something very challenging and tragic to distill the purity of one’s love for something or for someone — and I think the pandemic has done that in many, many different ways.”

Of course, Bosworth has long known that she’d devote her life to acting. “From a young age, I was like, ‘I want to move out to LA and I want to try to do this thing,” she recalls of her childhood ambitions, which were, she continues, unlike those of other kids in her hometown of Cohasset, a small town outside of Boston. Even so, she did make it to — and make it in — LA, but not without her share of hardships.

“Because I’m an only child… there has always been this kind of familiarity with loneliness…,” she reveals. “I was very shy and a little bit embarrassed to be honest and say, ‘I need help. I don’t know what I’m doing’… Now, being on the other side of that, it’s like, no, you have to ask for help.”

kate bosworth

That initial fear of turning to others is why she now dedicates much of her time to proactively mentoring young actors and those looking to break into the movie industry. In 2018, she and Polish founded Montana Institute of the Arts, a non-profit art school, for budding filmmakers; a year later, she launched the “She Directed” campaign to provide opportunities for female filmmakers.

Now, she has a message for other women: “ You are not supposed to know everything….You only know what you know, and that is okay. You have to lean on people who you can trust and who you can really gain insight and stability from.” Yet, even with two decades of experience under her belt, at times she still grapples with taking her own advice.

“To expose myself, to say, ‘Wow, I am really struggling,’ or, ‘Wow, I’m confused,’ still hits me in a deeply uncomfortable way,” she admits.

It’s in these moments, though, that Bosworth comes face to face with her strength.  She says, “It takes a hell of a lot of courage to be vulnerable. One cannot exist without the other, and I love that. Every time I think, ‘Man, I’m about to write an article, or play a role, or produce a project where I feel really vulnerable,’ I always think, ‘The possibilities on the other side of that are so amazing.’”

In a way, that’s the beauty of Bosworth’s enduring pioneer spirit. Her vulnerability, passion, and dynamism push her forward into the great unknown, while her example inspires and makes the journey that much easier for the rest of us.

Enter: small-town sweetheart Rosalee Futch ( Kate Bosworth ), a checkout clerk who wins a contest to go on a date with her favorite actor. Caught in a love triangle with leading man Tad and grocery store manager Pete ( Topher Grace ), Rosalee must ultimately choose between her celebrity crush and her co-worker.

Rounding out the star-studded cast are  Ginnifer Goodwin  (Rosalee and Pete’s pal Cathy);  Nathan Lane (Tad’s   agent Richard Levy);  Sean Hayes  (Tad’s manager, also named Richard Levy);  Kathryn Hahn (bartender Angelica, Pete’s not-so-secret admirer); and  Octavia Spencer  (cashier Janine).

During a press junket for  Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! , Goodwin revealed that she and Grace were close friends both on and off-screen (both actors appeared in the 2003 film  Mona Lisa Smile ). But the cast connections don’t stop there! “I knew Kate from childhood,” Grace told  E! in 2004. “We actually are from the same hometown [Darien, Connecticut]. And Josh is a great friend.”

As for Duhamel’s origin story, the  Las Vegas  star said that a famous filmmaker was partially responsible for helping him land the lead. “The story goes that  Steven Spielberg  looked at the screen tests and [said], ‘If I was making this movie, I’d hire him,’” the North Dakota native told  Entertainment Weekly .

The  All My Children  alum also had a leg-up from his real-life recognition as a soap star. “Part of the reason I got this job was because [my publicist] was really smart in using some footage we had from what we call Super Soap weekend in Florida, where the biggest fans basically from ABC daytime would go to this big event at Disney World,” Duhamel said in an interview with  IGN   in January 2004. “Because everybody knows you, you feel like you’re Tad Hamilton walking down the boulevard in Disney World. And we had footage of walking down the streets there, at a question-answer thing with all these people watching. It was a microcosm of what it’s actually like for somebody like that,  Tom Cruise  or whatever, [so] I did have a sense of what it would feel like.”

Grace compared Tad Hamilton to another Hollywood heartthrob. “It’s like,  Brad Pitt ,” the  That ‘70s Show  actor said at the time. “What are you gonna do? If the girl you like starts dating Brad Pitt, you know no matter how great a guy you are, you’re going to have a problem.”

Art imitated life for Bosworth, who was dating  Pirates of the Caribbean  star  Orlando Bloom  at the time the movie came out. “Being in this business and knowing how you really can’t judge a book by its cover, and just knowing how different things probably are than how they’re portrayed, I try not to have a certain image of somebody,” the  Blue Crush  actress told  IGN . “And if I do, I keep that in mind because I know that there are so many different things said about me. I’m thinking, well, take it with a grain of salt. You can’t exactly put anybody in a box.”

Since then, the cast has not just been winning hearts but also earning Oscars, Emmys and Tonys! Keep scrolling to see what the cast of  Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!  is up to now:

Josh Duhamel

Following the release of this feel-good film, Duhamel went on to star in several other romantic films:  When in Rome opposite Kristen Bell , Life as We Know It opposite Katherine Heigl , New Year’s Eve opposite Sarah Jessica Parker and Safe Haven opposite Julianne Hough . He returned to his rom-com roots alongside Jennifer Lopez in 2023's Shotgun Wedding .

The Daytime Emmy Award winner played Danny McCoy on the NBC crime drama Las Vegas , as well as Captain Lennox in the Transformers franchise. In fact, Spielberg handpicked Duhamel for the role in the 2007 action/sci-fi blockbuster ("He's my guardian angel," the actor told EW ). The Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! star teamed up with Bosworth once again in the ensemble comedy Movie 43 in 2013, going on to appear in Love, Simon , The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers , Bandit and The Thing About Pam with Renée Zellweger . He also wrote, directed and produced the 2019 comedy Buddy Games .

Duhamel married Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie in 2009, welcoming son Axl in 2013. After eight years of marriage, the couple separated in 2017. The Jupiter’s Legacy actor wed former Miss World America Audra Mari in September 2022.

Kate Bosworth

The Remember the Titans actress nabbed the role of Lois Lane in 2006’s Superman Returns . She went on to appear in Still Alice , The Immaculate Room , The Enforcer and Barbarian .

Bosworth also made headlines for a handful of high-profile romantic relationships. The Bring on the Dancing Horses executive producer dated Orlando Bloom , model James Rousseau and actor Alexander Skarsgård , her Straw Dogs costar. In 2013, she married Michael Polish (who directed the actress in the film Big Sur ), becoming stepmother to Jasper, Polish’s daughter from a previous marriage. The couple announced their separation in August 2021 and formally filed for divorce in July 2022.

After Bosworth wrapped an untitled project with Justin Long in 2021, Us Weekly confirmed the pair was officially dating in January 2022. The blonde beauty, famous for having one hazel eye and one blue eye, recently celebrated her 40th birthday with her new beau by her side. “You are my love and my light, my peace and my thrill,” she captioned an Instagram post . “Thank you for showing me what love is and for making this the best birthday ever 💛 xx.” (“You’ve always liked my costars!” Goodwin joked to Long on his podcast "Life is Short" in 2020. “I have a lot of cute co-workers and you always end up dating them.”)

Topher Grace

Perhaps best known for playing Eric Forman in the TV series That ‘70s Show , Grace returned to reprise his role in the 2023 Netflix revival That ‘90s Show . The New York native has also appeared in such films as In Good Company , Spider-Man 3 , Valentine’s Day , Take Me Home Tonight , Interstellar and Spike Lee ’s BlacKkKlansman . Grace and Hinshaw welcomed their daughter Mabel in 2017 and their second child in 2020. In September 2022, the Irresistible actor announced that his wife is pregnant with baby No. 3 .

kate bosworth tom cruise

Ginnifer Goodwin

The year after Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! ’s box office release, the Memphis native appeared in Walk The Line alongside Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon . In 2006, Goodwin began a five-year run on the HBO series Big Love , along with Chloë Sevigny (who coincidentally used to babysit for Topher Grace growing up).

The Why Women Kill actress starred in the popular rom-coms He’s Just Not That Into You (2009) and Something Borrowed (2011). Goodwin also appeared in Ramona and Beezus with Duhamel, and the actors are reuniting once again in the upcoming flick Buddy Games 2 .

In 2011, Goodwin scored the role of Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard in the ABC fairytale series Once Upon a Time opposite Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David Nolan. The costars wed in 2014, welcoming their first child Oliver later that year and son Hugo in 2016.

Kathryn Hahn

The Emmy nominee’s very first film role was in the iconic 2003 rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days , playing the funny sidekick to Kate Hudson ’s Andie Anderson (and a fake couples counselor in a particularly memorable scene with Matthew McConaughey ). “It felt like such a big-budget movie to me,” Hahn told Entertainment Weekly . “Kate Hudson is a goddess and her star was crazy on the rise — I couldn’t believe I was getting to work with her.” The two actresses reunited on the big screen in 2023's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery .

Hahn’s career spans from theatre to TV/film and comedy to drama. Past projects include Bad Moms , Step Brothers (singing a cappella with Adam Scott ) , Revolutionary Road , Parks and Rec , Afternoon Delight (with a pre- Ted Lasso Juno Temple ), Private Life and the HBO miniseries Mrs. Fletcher . She also lent her voice to several animated features, including the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse and the musical comedy Central Park .

The actress received an Emmy nomination in 2017 for her role as Rabbi Raquel in the television series Transparent and then again in 2021 for her performance as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries WandaVision . She has also earned SAG nods in the ensemble categories for both Captain Fantastic and Transparent . And in 2008, the My Wish for You children’s book author made her Broadway debut in the play Boeing-Boeing .

Hahn started dating writer, producer and actor Ethan Sandler during their sophomore year of college at Northwestern University — the couple later played love interests on the NBC crime drama Crossing Jordan . The two wed in 2002 and share son Leonard, 16, and daughter Mae, 13.

The Chicago native hosted the Tony Awards in 2010, the same year he was nominated for a Tony for his performance opposite Kristin Chenoweth in the musical Promises, Promises . Hayes went on to win an Emmy in 2011 for his hosting prowess (adding to his 2000 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series). Best known for playing the fan-favorite character Jack McFarland on the groundbreaking sitcom Will and Grace , the comedian returned to the reboot from 2017 to 2020.

The SAG Award winner also appeared on the NBC musical series Smash and the CBS sitcom The Millers . He currently hosts the “SmartLess” podcast with fellow actors Will Arnett and Jason Bateman . The Time Out author married husband Scott Icenogle in 2014.

Nathan Lane

After winning a Tony Award in 2001 for his performance as Max Bialystock in The Producers , the Broadway vet teamed up with costar Matthew Broderick once again on the 2005 movie adaptation. The Birdcage star also received a Tony in 2018 for his performance as Roy Cohn in the revival of Angels in America alongside Andrew Garfield .

Over the course of his legendary career, Lane has appeared in over 20 Broadway productions, earning three Tony Awards and three separate nominations. He also made Emmys history as the most recognized actor of all time with seven nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, finally winning his first trophy in 2022 for his role on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building .

The comedian has also appeared on Modern Family , The Guilded Age and Impeachment: American Crime Story . He’ll soon star in Broadway’s Pictures From Home and the movie F*cking Identical Twins , an R-rated musical spin on The Parent Trap from A24. The eclectic cast includes Megan Mullally , Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion .

In 2015, Lane married his partner of 18 years Devlin Elliott . The couple collaborated on the children’s book Naughty Mabel , inspired by their pet French bulldog.

Octavia Spencer

The celebrated star won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award in 2012 for her performance as Minny Jackson in The Help . She is the first Black actress to receive two consecutive Oscar nominations for her supporting roles in 2016’s Hidden Figures and 2017’s The Shape of Water . Spencer’s additional film credits include Ma , The Witches , Instant Family , Thunder Force and Spirited .

10 Actors Who Were Severely Miscast, According To Reddit

They just missed the mark.

Chris Evans stars in Ghosted , a new Apple TV+ movie, as a farmer who chases after a girl who turns out to be a spy. The premise is intriguing, but it's hard to picture Captain America as an out-of-shape average Joe. And while Evans is ridiculously charming on-screen, he might be miscast in Ghosted .

Evans is hardly the only star miscast in a role. Several actors have taken on roles they were woefully wrong for, whether in an attempt to act against type or because they made a mistake when choosing the script. And because it's not uncommon in Hollywood, fans on Reddit have more than a few ideas when it comes to naming miscast actors who, despite giving their best, were simply wrong for the role.

10 Kate Bosworth - Superman Returns

Superman Returns is an unfairly maligned take on the Man of Steel. A shameless love letter to the Richard Donner films, Superman Returns was too safe to successfully re-introduce the Last Son of Krypton to the mainstream. Kate Bosworth 's performance as Lois Lane was also divisive, with many considering her miscast in the role.

RELATED: Best Superman Portrayals In Movies & TV, Ranked

Redditor majorjoe23 considers her too young for the part. "It made it hard to believe she was a seasoned reporter and the mother of a 5-year-old," the user claims, a sentiment echoed by other fans. Indeed, Bosworth is not necessarily bad in the role, but she doesn't fit the image of a hardened reporter about to win the Pulitzer Prize.

9 Tom Hanks - Elvis

Tom Hanks ' performance in Elvis ranks as one of the most polarizing of his career. Some considered it genius, while others harshly criticized it for its over-the-top vibe -- it even earned him a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor. Hanks' accent was particularly lambasted, as were many of his acting choices.

Redditor DirtyHandler is among those who aren't fans of Hanks' performance, saying he "couldn't stop seeing the characters as just Tom Hanks in a fat suit with a bad fake accent." Fellow user Rainbwned suggests Paul Giamatti would've been better suited for the role, and others agree. Elvis is a bombastic musical meant to provoke audiences, and Hanks' performance fits that narrative to a tee; however, it's also understandable that many would find his portrayal off-putting.

8 Jesse Eisenberg - Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice

Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg was an odd choice to play supervillain Lex Luthor from the get-go. His performance was controversial and one of the main factors contributing to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice 's less-than-stellar reception. To make matters worse, time hasn't been kind to his take on Luthor either.

RELATED: 10 Trailers That Spoiled The Movie's Plot, According To Reddit

Owasso_Landman claims the movie "was trying to do a Mark Zuckerberg tech villain," but "it didn't work." Another Redditor, The_Homie_3 , goes so far as to claim "nothing about that character was Lex Luthor aside from the name." Eisenberg is a good actor, but his take on Lex Luthor was not the best, mainly because the movie misunderstood what makes Lex a compelling character.

7 Vince Vaughn - Psycho

Gus Van Sant 's choice to make a shot-by-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock 's timeless classic Psycho was bound to fail. The director made inspired choices with his casting, especially going with Vince Vaughn as the now-iconic horror villain Norman Bates. However, the result was still underwhelming, and Vaughn couldn't live up to Anthony Perkins ' legacy.

Reddit user exhaustednihilist420 states that the choice "made no sense at the time and still doesn't" because Vaughn "is way too comfortable in his own skin" to make a character like Bates work. Indeed, Norman is a self-hating and complicated individual, and Van Sant and Vaughn couldn't reveal anything new compared to what Hitchcock and Perkins had already achieved.

6 Cameron Diaz- Gangs Of New York

Cameron Diaz was one of the noughties' biggest stars, a certified box office draw with massive on-screen appeal who could be outstanding in the right role. However, her work in Martin Scorsese 's historical movie Gangs of New York is uneven at best, mostly because of her weak Irish accent.

Spoonman500 believes "she didn't do bad, but she's definitely the low point of the main cast." AnyNamesLeftAnymore adds that she "doesn't have the makings of a 19th-century poor girl," adding Diaz "looked like a movie star pretending to be (a poor girl)." Indeed, Diaz's characterization is lacking, especially compared to her scenery-chewing male co-stars.

5 Humphrey Bogart - Sabrina

Humphrey Bogart is a cinematic icon, with the AFI considering him the greatest male star of classical Hollywood . The star of numerous legendary pictures, Bogart was a reliable and charismatic movie star who could effortlessly dominate any scene.

However, some fans think he was the wrong choice to star opposite Audrey Hepburn in Billy Wilder 's 1954 romantic comedy Sabrina . Redditor Adela_Ch claims the movie's lighting "makes him look his age," especially opposite Hepburn," who was less than half his age." Hepburn is unexpectedly great in Sabrina , but the overwhelming age difference with Hepburn makes him an odd choice for the part.

4 Tom Cruise - Jack Reacher

Considered by many to be among the last movie stars, Tom Cruise is Hollywood's go-to action man. However, his casting as Jack Reacher raised more than a few eyebrows because Cruise looked nothing like the giant, hulking antihero from Lee Child's novels.

Redditor VrinTheTerrible claims Reacher is "6'5" with hands big enough to crush your skull" while "Cruise... isn't." Cruise is an accomplished actor who embodied Reacher's qualities perfectly, but anyone who has read the source material can tell he would be the last choice to play the character. Alan Ritchson 's casting in the Prime Video series adaptation just enhanced how miscast Cruise was in the role.

3 Denise Richards - The World Is Not Enough

Pierce Brosnan 's James Bond tried to lean into the series' camp aspect without fully understanding what camp is. The World Is Not Enough is particularly goofy, from the plot to the gadgets; however, casting Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist was never convincing.

RELATED: All 27 James Bond Movies Ranked Worst To Best, According To Rotten Tomatoes

MrFluffyhead80 says, "There's no way in hell (they are) believing that Denise Richards is a nuclear scientist." Most agree her casting was not ideal, but her performance has aged well enough, with many appreciating her as a camp icon and one of the most entertaining parts in an otherwise forgettable movie. However, it's still fair to say she was woefully miscast in the role.

2 Keanu Reeves - Bram Stoker's Dracula

Keanu Reeves ' performance in Francis Ford Coppola' s Bram Stoker's Dracula lives in infamy. Many American actors can effortlessly pull an English accent , but Reeves isn't one, and his efforts in the movie go from clumsy to outright embarrassing.

However, the performance isn't universally panned, and many fans have come to enjoy it for what it is. Redditor Mudders_Milk_Man calls it "often in the 'so-bad-it's-good category,'" while jiggliebilly calls his casting "an interesting choice," especially opposite Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman . To Reeves' credit, Coppola thinks highly of him , although even he admits the accent was not great.

1 Ben Platt - Dear Evan Hansen

Ben Platt originated the role of Evan Hansen in the original Broadway production of Dear Evan Hansen and won a Tony for his efforts. Naturally, when the film adaptation was announced, Platt was a no-brainer to reprise his role in the film. However, he aged considerably between projects and looked far too adult to still play a teenager.

Redditor tingbudongma agrees Platt was too mature for the role, claiming "some of his stage theatrics didn't translate well to screen." Fellow user bookishly93 adds, "It didn't help that the actors playing his fellow students could at least pass as high schoolers," making Platt look "uncomfortably older." Adding the show's original problems, Dear Evan Hansen is far from one of the best Broadway-to-screen adaptations .

TBT: Kate Bosworth Called Orlando Bloom Her "First Big Heartbreak"

They met on the set of a Gap commercial.

Alicia Brunker is a freelance writer who covers celebrity, royal, and fashion news for InStyle.com. She joined InStyle's digital team in 2017, and previously contributed to ELLE, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and WWD.

kate bosworth tom cruise

Who: Screen Actors Guild Awards-winning actor Orlando Bloom , 45, and actress and producer Kate Bosworth, 39.

How They Met: Before they were stars, Bloom and Bosworth met while filming a Gap commercial together in 2002.

"I knew Orlando before he was famous at all. So we started dating way, way back in the day. And then it hit when we were together," Kate said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen , adding that they both found major success within their first year of dating. At just 18 years old, Kate had her breakout role in Blue Crush , and Orlando was on the rise after filming the first Lord of the Rings movie.

They kept their romance quiet, but after a year of dating, Orlando wanted the world to know he was in love. "I'm in love with love," he told a British newspaper when asked about Bosworth. "It's heavenly when you're falling for someone and can't stop thinking about her."

Why We Loved Them: Despite the two attempting to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, it was essentially impossible not to notice them. They were one of the hottest young Hollywood couples at the time — Kate was an It girl, and Orlando, a total heartthrob.

When They Peaked: Kate previously told People that she and Orlando "don't really do the big event thing" as a couple, but they made an exception to this rule at the Superman Returns world premiere in 2006. And we were so glad they did.

The Breakup: After more than two years together, Bloom and Bosworth ended up calling it quits. They released a joint statement that blamed their busy work schedules for the breakup.

A rep for the couple said, "They [Kate and Orlando] did decide to take some time apart due to their upcoming work schedule, and they remain very close. It was a mutual decision."

A few years later, Kate shed more light on the breakup during an interview with Vogue ." Orlando and I met when we were kids. Blue Crush hadn't come out. Lord of the Rings hadn't come out. He was the first big heartbreak," she said . "First love — you feel like it's the be-all and end-all. To put as little pressure on the relationship you're in is very important. I regret that it was too intense for both of us."

In 2011, Kate opened up about the physical toll the split took on her body while speaking with the Sunday Times Style . "You know when you put all your chips into something, then it disappears? [The breakup] sent me into such pain, I think I had actual vertigo. I was like, 'Is this my new reality? Will anything be normal again?'"

She added, "Then one day you wake up, and you think, OK, I'll never be the same, but I'll survive, and I'll grow from it."

Where They Are Now: Bloom is engaged to singer Katy Perry, and the couple welcomed their first child together, Daisy Dove Bloom, in August 2020. The actor is also a father to 11-year-old Flynn, who he shares with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

Career-wise, Bloom is keeping busy with a lineup of new TV and movie roles. After a brief break during the pandemic, he returned to the small screen with a voiceover role as Prince Harry in the HBO animated series The Prince, and that same year, he starred alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Freida Pinto, and Cynthia Erivo in Needle in a Timestack .

Bosworth moved on from her heartbreak over Bloom with model Justin Rousseau in 2006. She then dated Alexander Skarsgård, before marrying director Michael Polish in 2013. Bosworth and Polish filed for divorce in 2021, and the actress is now dating Justin Long.

This year alone, Kate has wrapped filming for four movies — The Enforcer , Along for the Ride , House of Darkness (where she met her boyfriend, Long), and The Immaculate Room . Next year is also shaping up to be just as busy with three new projects.
