Cycling in Portugal
Bike touring
Whether you’re looking for afternoon jaunts or wish to explore the country on a profound level, cycling in Portugal offers fantastic routes, blissful sights and fascinating landscapes. With a lengthy Atlantic coastline and two offshore archipelagos, bike rides will often provide you with astounding sea views and ample toe-dipping opportunities.
Cycle routes in Portugal have even more to offer than a beautiful, wild coastline though. With an amazingly large variety of landscapes, you can ride past rugged mountains and through glacial valleys, see rare Mediterranean forests and stop in remote villages for pasteis de nata, Portugal’s famous custard tart.
Flat, coastal cycle paths are plentiful and perfect for families as well as soloists. Many sections of coast include forest hills, rewarding your climb with exceptional views. Multi-day routes are also a wonderful choice and no two days will be the same. With a warm, maritime and Mediterranean climate, you can cycle year round.
The best cycling routes in Portugal
De funchal ao pico da torre — percurso na ilha da madeira, de espinho ao estuário do rio douro e praia de cabedelo.
Let us show you the way with the komoot mobile app
A varied country where every inch is worthy of exploration, choosing cycle routes in Portugal can be tricky. What better way to settle on a location than its designated nature parks? There are seven in total, with a further national park, Peneda-Gerês. You’ll find Gerês in the far north, bordering Spain, and there’s a fair chance that you’ll fall heavily in love with its lush vegetation, staggering views and crashing waterfalls. Try to glimpse the wolves that roam here.
If you’re based in or near Lisbon, you can head out to Sintra-Cascais Natural Park on the coast. Cycling in Portugal hardly gets better than this, with the UNESCO World Heritage town, Sintra, begging to be explored before you ride into the park proper. Days here are often strenuous, with challenging climbs. Dirt, gravel and asphalt trails can be found here.
Islands and archipelagos
While the mainland has a lifetime’s worth of cycle paths and trails, if you find yourself in one of the archipelagos, two-wheeled adventures are equally wonderful. Bike rides in Portugal’s island chains can be dramatically different, from Madeira’s tough, volcano switchbacks to the hydrangea-lined lanes of Sao Miguel in the Azores.
All with volcanic foundations, cycling is typically hilly in Portugal’s islands but the incredible views and culture make the thigh-burn worth it. Stop at volcanic lakes, try Azorean cheeses and ride the desert landscape of Porto Santo.
You can fly or ferry your bike from the mainland to the islands or to make things easy, rent one out there. Hundreds of miles into the Atlantic, Portugal’s islands have an isolated yet welcoming feel.
Pedaling from January to December
Mainland Portugal provides year-round cycling conditions and there’s always somewhere sporting the perfect weather. In the heat of the summer, when the south can be exhaustingly hot, head up north to Gerês, the mountains or even over to Sintra-Cascais with its cooler microclimate.
In winter, pedal down south to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Algarve coast with its endless tracks, back lanes and paths. You’ll find gloriously warm temperatures and near-deserted trails.
The archipelagos never get too cold but the Azores experience significant rainfall throughout the year while Madeira has wet winters. That’s why these wonderful islands are so unbelievably green.

Porto to Lisbon Atlantic Ride
Portugal is a jewel.... Biking the Atlantic Coast from Porto to Lisbon was the perfect manner to get a feel for the country. Seafood was outstanding. The guides advised us to eat at wonderful restaurants along the coast. Would have liked more time in Nazare to visit the beaches. Also, the ability to carry only two people at a time in the "sag wagon" was a big drawback.

- Self-Guided Cycling
Cycling in the Douro Valley
We had a terrible experience with Exodus. We signed up for a "Self-Guided Cycling in the Douro Valley" several months in advance. Our detailed contacts were asked for by Exodus, but then never communicated to the actual operator. This meant that our agreed pick-up driver never showed up (he had incorrect information) and we had to fumble with international calls and roaming charges to contact a real person on a Saturday morning. Exodus could have offered us compensation on the spot for this ordeal. I wouldn't recommend their trips to anyone. Look around as Exodus charges a fortune.
The Algarve With Charme Along Portugal's Dream Coast
Madeira Island by Bike
Excellent tour, absolutely stunning island. We were booked into some really nice properties. Focus bikes were in great shape and GPS navigation was spot on. If you are scared of relatively steep descents on the road, this may not be the tour for you.

Explorer: Cycling the Algarve (from Castro Marim to Lagos)
An absolutely wonderful tour In spite of inclement weather. We were lucky to have some of the best tour leaders in the world. I can not say enough good things about their passion, professionalism, knowledge and local expertise. Have done previous tours with ExperiencePlus and just about to sign up for a new tour in 2023. Best bike tour company hands down. Congratulations to the whole team at the company for working so diligently to make our rides so memorable. Many many thanks.
Bike Across Portugal Plus! the Coast
The best way to experience the soul of a country is to get on a bicycle and slowly ride across the country - taking in the people , the food , the cilture and the countryside -- and then to make it even better -- add two or three very knowledgabke locals as your guides and constant companions for 12 days. Experienceplus gives you this and a whole lot more - they have sweated the small stuff ( and the big stuff for you as well ) -- slot in -- relax and enjoy -- and believe me you will !

Reviews of portugal bike tours.
Great ride, pedaling along the beach and through forests, many miles of which are bicycle path and board walk. The bicycle provided were perfect, lightweight, front suspension MTBs with provided large capacity handlebar bag. The ride was not overly taxing, although hillier as the days went on. The cafe stops were delightful. Historic and natural beauty surrounded us. Hotels and buffet breakfasts were perfect. The guide Alex a Portugal native was superb, corralling us as needed for safety, espousing on history, geography and such. We had a friendly group and a lovely time. Highly recommended.
Everything was great. Leader was excellent. Only suggestion...asked people to bring bike mirrors as we spent q lot of time on the road.
Tour guide very good and enjoyable trip.i think the route could be better and some of the places we stayed in..could have stayed in Douro Valley and gone to a winery and stayed at a better beach destination

Rolling hills & coastal views
Portugal bike tours.
Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal features over 528 miles (850 km) of pristine blue-water, sandy beaches and a sunny Mediterranean climate—the perfect atmosphere for cycling.
Lisbon boasts The Park of Nations, home to one of the largest estuaries in Europe, and is a smooth cycle ride. Pedal through Porto’s castles and sip world-famous Port wine of the River Douro.
The dedicated bike paths and side roads of the countryside have little traffic and allow cyclists to easily explore. Likewise, the rolling hills and quaint villages invite adventure and the stunning Algarve region boasts plentiful coastal views.
“The countryside was beautiful, with both challenging and gentle hills, and the people we met were friendly and helpful.”

Our dedicated team meticulously handles all facets, encompassing lodging arrangements, thorough planning, GPS navigational aid, and continuous support, to gift you a tranquil and engrossing journey. This venture champions autonomy, personal expression, and genuine cultural engagements.
Our tours are segmented into three tiers of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , categorized by the usual daily routine, although there may be variations in difficulty throughout the trip.
Leisurely tours are ideal for those in pursuit of a relaxed adventure amidst stunning landscapes, without the challenge of covering long distances or tackling rough terrains. These journeys typically cover 30-50 km each day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows plenty of pauses to relish the scenic vistas, enjoy local delicacies, and explore charming villages and towns along the way.
Moderate bike tours are tailored for those seeking a beautiful blend of scenic trails and a dash of challenge. Generally covering 50-80 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours traverse enchanting landscapes and delightful villages, featuring a mix of flat and rolling terrains. They not only provide ample chances to stop and explore but also ensure a satisfying cycling workout.
Challenging bike tours are meant for experienced cyclists eager to push their limits. Spanning 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m, these tours entail tackling steep ascents and demanding terrains. Though these tours require a high level of fitness and endurance, the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, coupled with breathtaking views, makes the endeavor thoroughly rewarding.
We are devoted to discovering the ideal match for you. We collaborate with numerous lodging providers who meet our standards, although their availability may fluctuate, especially during peak demand times. Furthermore, we can customize your vacation to align with your preferences and budget, ensuring we identify the most fitting choice for your needs.
We advise booking your tour at the earliest opportunity, especially for popular tourist destinations with limited lodging availability. Prime choices often get snapped up for the summer before spring even arrives.
Addressing dietary preferences can vary based on their complexity. In Portugal, vegetarian options are generally available, but finding vegan meals might be more challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Notably, lunch stops are often at traditional eateries which may not cater to special dietary needs beyond their standard menu. Keep this in consideration as you plan your adventure.
The ideal cycling season in Portugal stretches from mid-April to mid-October. In elevated regions like the Serra da Estrela, it’s preferable to cycle from mid-May to September.
Tours in Portugal can continue in light rain with the appropriate clothing. Summer frequently witnesses afternoon thunderstorms, making early tour starts recommended. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we’ll strive to adjust the tour beforehand.

Cycling in Portugal: what to know & best cycling routes
Portugal is a great destination for cycling due to its diverse landscapes, including a lengthy Atlantic coastline, mountains, and valleys. There are routes suitable for all levels of difficulty throughout the country.
The country's favorable climate allows for cycling year-round, especially in the Algarve area in Southern Portugal.
Besides, biking and cycling are becoming increasingly popular in Portugal not only as a sport but also as a means of transportation due to the rising gas prices. It's a good way to travel around Portugal .
While some areas of Portugal may not have extensive cycling infrastructure like dedicated cycle paths, it compensates with well-maintained backroads that offer scenic routes for travel.
With a growing emphasis on promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation, Portugal has been investing in infrastructure and services to cater to cyclists.
Local authorities keep making special paths for bikes in big cities like Lisbon and Porto, and other smaller cities across Portugal. They were also creating long paths on old train lines, like the Ecopista to Dão near Coimbra and the Ecopista da Linha to Tâmega near Amarante and the Ecopista near Évora.
Let’s look at already existing Portugal’s biking routes.

It also one of the easiest bike routes, featuring the paved, traffic-free greenway.
The beginning of the cycle path is in Santa Comba Dão, and it follows the Dão River and its tributary, the Pavia River. The path is almost 50km long and is easy to walk or cycle. It takes you through a rural area with vineyards and farming communities. The Ecopista starts at the railway line in Dão, and there are also some amazing railway heritage sites along the way.

The starting point in Évora is difficult to describe. There are no designated crossing areas, so you just use the crosswalk. At one point, there is a new, red bike path. Most of the Ecopista de Évora is not paved. If you don't have a bike, you can rent one at Galacio Bike near the edge of town, where the path starts.

Thank you for another great experience. Some of our biking buddies did their own home-grown rides in Portugal while we were on the Trek trip, and they acknowledged the Trek trip looked a lot more fun.
The dining experiences were amazing. The vineyard tour and dinner on the last night was unforgettable, gorgeous and so special. I felt so privileged to spend the evening there.
Sylvia, Trek Travel Guest
Every meal out as a group was well thought out and enhanced our experience, from the opening dinner in town with local wine and food to the final closing. The lunch in Elvas with the incredible view was fabulous, with well selected food. The dinner in Estremoz was incredible, with the highest quality food and presentation. And the final closing dinner with wine tour, bit of cooking on the estate, and seating at the most elaborate table with wonderful service was a lovely closing touch.
Candace, Trek Travel Guest
Both the tour of Evora and the tour of the cork estate were wonderful. The history of the region was central to the enjoyment and awe of the spaces we visited. Meeting and enjoying the people of the region enriched our time there.

Portugal’s N2 cycle route: Q&A with Portugal A2Z
If you’re looking for a long-distance cycle route steeped in history, culture and ancient tradition, it’s time to consider Portugal’s ‘Route 66’: the Portugal N2 cycle route.
National Road N2 offers some of the best road cycling in Portugal. It’s one of the most varied and best cycling routes in Europe. This 739-kilometre route traverses the length of the country, from its mountainous north in Trás-os-Montes, to the verdant valleys of the south in the Barrocal Algarve.
Portugal’s N2 road crosses four mountain ranges, 11 rivers, and 35 municipalities, with a menu of local gastronomical delights and world-famous wine to fuel your journey of rich Roman heritage.
Pedro Pedrosa, a keen cyclist and Portugal A2Z Walking and Biking Co-Founder, has got in-depth knowledge about Portugal’s cycling routes. Here, he shares his tips for how to cycle the N2 road, and why this life-affirming journey is one to add to the bucket list.
1. Why cycle the N2 in Portugal?
Cycling the 739-kilometre N2 route is a unique way to discover the historic and diverse heartland of Portugal. It’s one of the only roads in the world that spans a whole country in its entirety. It runs through Portugal “end to end”, crossing the mountainous regions in the north and ends at the gorgeous beaches in the south.
Born from the foundations of ancient Roman Roads that once crossed the Iberian province of Lusitania, its ancient roots have earned it the title of the ‘most mythical road in the country’. It holds a treasure trove of history to unearth: Roman spas in Chaves, the 2,000 year old UNESCO World Heritage site of the Alto Douro Wine Region and Faro’s ancient city walls to name only a few.
Add to that, beautiful landscapes with countless panoramic views, big climbs and rewarding, sweeping descents, plus plenty of bike lanes on the way – it really is one of the best long distance bike rides in Europe!
2. Give us a feel for what each day on an N2 bike trip is like.
Cycling the N2 can take between 5-12 days, depending on the distance you’d like to cover each day, how much time you want to spend exploring and how challenging you want your experience to be.
There are many things to explore and no two days are the same as the landscape is constantly changing. You’ll pass through cities, ancient villages and small towns, over some of the country’s most important rivers and five mountain ranges (while passing alongside five others).
On top of that you cycle through many wine production regions and 18 Protected Areas and sites integrated in the Natura 2000 Network, including a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Douro Valley.
Here’s a flavour of what to expect on our seven day self-guided N2 cycle route with Portugal A2Z:
Day 1: Arrive in Chaves
Most guests arrive by airplane in the enchanting city of Porto, famous for its delicious fortified port wine. There’s then a transfer to Chaves. Guests usually spend the day discovering the thermal baths and Roman bridge of Trajan, fuelling up for tomorrow’s start.
Day 2: Cycling Chaves to Régua (90 kilometres)
Start your epic ride at the zero kilometre milestone, which is near the public park in Chaves.
Ride the mountain roads of the Trás-os-Montes region and into the stunning Douro Valley. This historic Alto Douro wine region is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with over 2,000 years of history and twisted, contoured landscape.
In the city of Peso da Régua you can stop at the Douro Museum, before crossing the Douro River and conquering the Mezio summit at 1,000 metres of elevation.
Day 3: Cycling Régua to Tondela (108 kilometres)
Ride south to discover the historical towns of Lamego and Viseu, steeped in sacred art and religious architecture.
Stop at the cathedral and sample the delights of famous local sweets before leaving the vineyards behind and heading to Tondela, an ancient city in the Dão wine region. It would be rude not to sample the delicious wine as a reward for your efforts so far!
Day 4: Cycling Tondela to Pedrógão Pequeno (122 kilometres)
Follow the Mondego River and then enter the spectacular Lousā mountain range. Be rewarded with two of the hardest climbs along the N2, with panoramic mountain views and rich biodiversity.
Spot deer and wild boar before passing through Pedrógāo Grande to the great lake of the Cabril Dam, one of the biggest dams in the country.
Day 5: Cycling Pedrógão Pequeno to Montargil (130 kilometres)
Follow the Zêzere River to leave the northern and central mountains of Portugal behind and enter the flatter Alentejo landscapes.
Trace the route of the Tejo River to Montargil amongst tranquil countryside and whitewashed villages. You’ll also notice the beautiful cork trees become part of the scenery and will form an ever-present part of the landscape until the end of the N2 ride.
Day 6: Cycling Montargil to Odivelas (Alentejo) (122 kilometres)
After a few days of mountains and undulations, now enjoy the flattest section of the N2 route, with kilometres of inviting, straight roads and easier terrain ahead.
Pay a visit to discover the wartime history of Montemor-o-Novo, with its ancient castle and several historical monuments.
Day 7: Cycling Odivelas to Almodôvar (70 kilometres)
Ride endless tranquil roads, with owls, red kites, common buzzards and storks for company. After passing through the mining village of Aljustrel you’ll reach the gorgeous plains of Castro Verde, with its natural grasslands and endangered ancient bird species, including the Iberian Imperial Eagle.
Day 8: Cycling Almodôvar to Faro (80 kilometres)
Take in the ever-changing landscape en route to the Algarve, with mountains to challenge you for one last time.
Climb the Caldeirão range amongst signs of ancestral rural lifestyle. Pass the iconic mountain pass of Barranco do Velho and lap up the kilometres and kilometres of pure beauty, rich heritage and gastronomic delights as you sail into Faro and its historic marina.

3. What’s the best time of year to attempt Portugal’s end to end cycle ride?
Any time is a good time for the N2!
Winter is sunny and inviting in the south of Portugal, but you may encounter some rain in the north, particularly in the Tagus region.
In summer, temperatures in the north will be great but you’ll need to prepare yourself for the heat of the south!
Early autumn and spring, might be a good mid ground, but these days there’s no such thing as certainty when it comes to the weather. We suggest not worrying too much about finding “the perfect time” and just going for it!
4. How fit do you have to be to cycle the N2?
The total length of the N2 route is 739 kilometres, with some big mountain climbs in the north. A good level of fitness will make it much more enjoyable.
Whether you’re joining for one of our bike tours in Portugal, or doing a self guided trip, we always recommend physically preparing for the challenge beforehand so you can enjoy it to the fullest over a number of days or weeks.
On the N2, you’ll have to be able to endure some steep climbs, especially in the north, so our advice is to split your N2 experience by elevation gain instead of distance. Try to spend a few more days climbing in the north, then enjoy the flatter southern region as a reward.
We are always happy to tailor-make an itinerary for a customer, based on a 7 to 14 day trip. This allows customers to cycle lower distances each day and even cycle on hybrid bikes.
E-bikes are also a great option for those that are less fit. They’re an excellent way of allowing families to all cycle together and making cycling trips more accessible. We’re delighted to help with e-bike rental if this is something a customer is interested in.
5. What are the best cycling climbs of the N2?
The best cycling climbs of the N2 route in Portugal can be found in the mountain ranges of the north and central parts of the country.
The longest and one of the hardest cycling climbs of the N2 route (+900m) starts just after Peso da Régua, around 88 kilometres into the ride. It extends for around 30 kilometres until reaching the highest point of the entire route, at Bigorne.
The 48 kilometre section starting just after Penacova has some notable cycling climbs, namely from Góis to the intersection of the N112 road (15km).
Other big climbs include the 8 kilometre section that ends at the geodesic mark just outside Vila de Rei (also known as “the midpoint of the N2 route”) and the 17 kilometre section that begins as you reach the Algarve (the southernmost region of Portugal) and ends at the Caldeirão range viewpoint.
6. Where are the flatter areas along the N2?
The flatter areas are found in the Alentejo region, at around 415 kilometres into the ride at the village of Pont de Sor. The Alentejo is known for its lowlands and pleasant landscapes. After crossing the bridge over the Tejo/Tagus River, as you reach Ponte de Sor the flatter section of the N2 route starts and extends for more than 100 kilometres, until you reach Almodôvar, the last municipality in the Alentejo region crossed by the N2.
After Abrantes and up to Almodovar, the stages are very rolling and with shorter and easier climbs.
7. What’s your favourite part of the N2 cycling route – and why?
There are so many fascinating parts along this historic and beautiful road, it’s difficult to choose!
Douro Valley
One place that always stands out with riders is the Douro Valley, which we ride through on day two of our seven day N2 cycling tour .
The winding Douro River, the verdant slopes of its valley, with small villages and vineyards in the twisted contours of the Alto Douro Wine Region with its UNESCO World Heritage status, make it a really spectacular place to ride.
Plus, the delicious local cuisine in this region is one of the most important treasures, with all of the typical dishes made with locally cultivated products.
Greenway alongside the N2
Another favourite part of the N2 route is in the centre region, between Viseu and Santa Comba Dão (which also includes the district of Aveiro), where we can take the option to divert off the N2 and cycle on a stunning greenway built on disused railway lines.
The Ecopista do Dão is 49 kilometres long and runs along the banks of the River Dão before leaving the river to take in views of the mountains and neighbouring vineyards.
It is an easy ride as the greenway is flat with no climbs, and is completely traffic free, so you can sit back and enjoy the views.
8. What is there to see along the N2 route?
You’ll experience the diversity, history and cultural heritage of an entire country when riding Portugal’s N2 route.
Discover the thermal baths and Roman bridge of Trajan in Chaves, the 2,000-year-old Douro Valley wine making region and its Museum, vineyards and fantastic food. There’s also the Cabril Dam in Pedrógão Grande, one of Portugal’s biggest dams, gothic churches and ancient castles.
Wildlife enthusiasts will also appreciate the chance to see endangered wildlife such as the Iberian Imperial eagle, in the gorgeous plains of Castro Verde, with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
You’ll also discover the kindness from local communities who live and work along the N2 as they welcome you into their world.
It’s an unforgettable journey of discovery into the heartland of Portugal and you can never see everything at once, so we see many riders returning for more on our Portugal cycle tours.
9. Self-supported vs supported N2 trip?
After you’ve decided when to do your N2 cycling trip in Portugal (more on that above), the next question is how quickly you want to ride it (versus spend more time and really explore it).
After that, it’s time to consider whether a self-guided, guided or a supported tour is best for you.
Self-guided tours
Self-guided cycling in Portugal is ideal if you’re looking to be flexible and customise your N2 experience.
Our self-guided N2 cycling tour can be completed over six to eight days and features a loose daily itinerary with an N2 route map and destination accommodation for you to reach however you choose. We can also create custom trips that add more days and stops to the itinerary.
On a self-guided tour you manage your own time and can be flexible on your journey, choosing which places you’ll visit along the way.
Guided tours
Guided cycling tours in Portugal include a more structured daily itinerary, with guided activities discovering the ancient traditions, local myths, and unique stories that the N2 route has to offer.
A local guide with both professional training and exciting personal experiences will take you to some of must-see attractions on the route. As well as taking the pressure off the travel and planning process, guided cycling tours are also a great opportunity to meet other travellers and locals.
On our guided cycling tours, all equipment and meals are taken care of by the travel company team, so you can just ride your bike and enjoy the experience without any responsibilities.
If you would like to upgrade our self-guided N2 cycling tour into a supported or guided trip, please just get in touch.
Supported tours
Supported cycling tours are a hybrid of the self-guided and guided options.
You get the flexibility and customisation in planning your trip, but with support along the route from the travel company, with all the equipment and meals you need.
A perfect option for those looking for freedom to plan your own awesome trip, but the security of knowing all the logistics are taken care of.

10. What is the N2 passport?
The N2 passport is a pocket guide that’s used to collect stamps along the N2 route.
It’s a fun way to add something extra to your journey, bringing a host of new experiences and interactions with local businesses and communities in each of the 35 municipalities crossed by the N2 road.
It was created by the Association of Municipalities of the National Road Route 2 (AMREN2) and you can pick up your passport from a Tourist Information Centre to begin your extra adventure along the N2. The tourist office in Chaves can be found at Terreiro da Cavalaria if you’re starting your ride there.
It’s worth pointing out that in a few cases some of the destinations are up to 30 kilometres off the main N2 route, so you’ll be adding distance onto your ride to collect a stamp. However, the warm welcome of the people you’ll meet and extra experiences you’ll have on your epic ride will make it all the more worthwhile!
11. Are there any books about cycling the N2?
You can find out more about cycling the N2 in this comprehensive travel guide, titled “ Foge comigo ”.
This book features detailed information about the N2 road and everything you can find along it. You can buy it via that link and also at some tourist offices and local establishments along the N2 (e.g. accommodation, restaurants and shops selling regional products). It is available in Portugese and English.
A new, pocket-sized version for cyclists is due to be released with suggestions of quieter alternatives to some of the busier sections of the road.
12. What are your best tips for people cycling in Portugal/cycling the N2 for the first time?
Be prepared for different climate conditions and hot and cold weather. The ever-changing landscapes bring a host of different temperatures so being prepared will pay off in the long run (or ride)!
We are often asked “Is the N2 safe?”.
We say, a (conditional) yes. Of course, no road is ever completely safe when it’s an open road that anyone may use. In the case of the N2, it’s also very long so there will always be some sections that are more busy than others. You need to take all the usual precautions – for example we recommend cycling safely, using lights in case of reduced visibility and wearing visible clothing.
But relatively speaking, the N2 is a pretty quiet road that we find our customers just love cycling.
Restaurants and places to stay
There are plenty of cycling friendly cafes and restaurants along the N2 route, and if you’re staying overnight along the route, many hotels have safe cycle storage.
Along the way when passing the cities, towns and villages there are plenty of bike shops with repair services. Of course, where customers travel with us we will also be on hand to help and advise if there are any mechanical problems!
If you’re doing a DIY trip, research the bike shops along the route and make sure you know how to get to them if you need to take a pit stop en route.
There is a variety of regional sweet and savoury delicacies to choose from on this trip.
On the savoury side, Pastéis de Chaves – a puff-pastry semi-circle filled with veal – is a great way to start off the trip while you are in the north of Portugal. In Autumn, chestnuts are also a must.
Around Lamego, you can try the traditional Bôla – bread stuffed with charcuterie meats – or a variety of charcuterie and wines from the region.
Goatling is a seasonal dish that’s typical in the last trimester of the year. Chanfana – prepared with goat and available all year – is traditional in the mountains of central Portugal.
River lamprey from the Mondego river is also a seasonal delicacy, available from February to April.
When talking about regional sweet treats, there is no town in Portugal that doesn’t have its specialty! On the N2, some you may find are Cristas de Galo and Pitos de Santa Luzia (around Vila Real), lemon and honey based candy from Régua (Rebuçados da Régua), Cornos de Penude (available in Penude in January), Bolo-podre (“rotten cake”) in Castro Daire, Viriatos in Viseu, Palha de Abrantes (in Abrantes) and a wide variety of conventual sweets in Lorvão.
Reaching Faro, small almond-based cakes with several shapes will allow you to end the trip on a sweet note!
Finally, it is very important to maintain a sustainable training routine, seeking out hills or varied terrain, attempting to simulate the type of riding you’ll find on the N2. Build a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour to its fullest, and make sure you’re comfortable for consecutive big kilometre days.
You might notice references to both the N2 and EN2. They are the same thing! EN2 stands for “Estada Nacional 2”. It’s often abbreviated to N2.

Thanks for sharing. I am off to Portugal in the New Year and will return in September to cycle N2. I am glad I found your blog. Great overview and lots of helpful information on N2.
Planning on cycling the n2 south -north with my wife early -mid April 2023. We prefer self supported but wondered if you offered / could advise on return travel or other ways to get bikes home. The perennial challenge of long distance a to b bike tours!
Hi Simon, I don’t know about return travel, apologies, but hopefully someone else reading this might be able to help you. Have a great trip!

Portugal Bike Tour: 11 best tips for cycling in Portugal
- Tips & Tricks
Portugal is a popular destination for cyclists. Its rich culture, charming cities, and diverse landscapes make Portugal an intriguing choice when planning a bike tour.
Everything from rugged coastal paths to rural mountain rides are found in Portugal, and doing research ahead of your Portugal bike tour will ensure your trip gets off to a great start.
Becoming acquainted with the country’s best cycling routes, understanding camping laws, and knowing the best time of year to cycle Portugal are all important factors in the planning process.
In this guide, we’ll cover 11 of our best tips for cycling in Portugal that helped us immensely during our two week tour of the country. Following these tips will help you plan a Portugal bike tour effectively, allowing you to fully enjoy your time in this remarkable country.
Let’s jump in!
Plan your route in advance
There’s no shortage of cycling destinations in Portugal, from the rocky Atlantic coast to lush Douro Valley. For such a small country, Portugal offers a vast range of landscapes to cycle through.
Before arriving in the country to start your tour, it’s a good idea to have a general plan of where you want to cycle.
Recommended Portugal bike tour routes:
- The Alentejo Region , a quiet region of Portugal with rolling hills, small villages, castles, and reservoirs
- The Atlantic Coast , heading north or south along the western coast of Portugal
- Ecopista do Dao , a 49 km stretch of bicycle path on a converted railway
- Douro Valley , a lush valley known for its wine-making along the Douro river
A helpful website we used when planning our Portugal bike tour was Pedal Portugal . This website lists routes for some of the best bike tours in the country. Although we didn’t follow an exact route from the website, they helped us brainstorm where (and how) we would cycle through the country.
Know the best time of year to visit Portugal
Portugal is known for its beautiful weather, but not every month is a great time to cycle through the country. In fact, weather can vary drastically from region to region throughout the year.
If you plan to cycle in northern Portugal, the best time to plan a tour is in spring and fall, whereas southern Portugal is most comfortable from fall to late spring.
Summertime in Portugal can get extremely hot, especially in the country’s southern regions. It’s not unheard of to encounter temperatures in the 90’s and 100’s (32-37ºC) in southern Portugal, which can be downright uncomfortable on the saddle.
Winter, on the other hand, varies by region. Northern Portugal can encounter chilly temperatures and snow whereas southern regions—such as the Algarve and Alentejo—have clear skies and sunshine.
Can you bike tour Portugal outside of these months? Certainly. In fact, we biked through the Algarve in early June, and the heat wasn’t too unbearable provided we took breaks from the sun.
For optimal cycling, though, it’s best to plan a Portugal bike tour when the weather isn’t as extreme.
Pack light for a Portugal bike tour
Portugal is a small country; while touring, you’ll never be too far from a city or town. Therefore, we recommend packing light when cycling around Portugal. There’s no need to carry two weeks’ worth of food and outfits with you.
It’s always worse to regret packing too much than not packing enough, and believe us, if you pack heavily you’ll constantly ask yourself “Why did I pack so much?!” on every pedal stroke.
Pack light and go shopping for necessities in towns you pass through during your tour. Whether stocking up on snacks, shampoo, or even a new cycling shirt, you shouldn’t have much trouble finding what you need in towns and cities throughout Portugal.
Understand camping laws
Knowing where to sleep on a bike tour is an important step in the planning process. Deciding whether to camp, stay in hostels, or book homestays is a major decision to make. If you choose to camp, you’ll have to read through the destination’s policies and pack totally different gear than if you were to stay in hotels throughout Portugal.
Can you wild camp in Portugal? The short answer is yes. Portugal recently relaxed their wild camping laws, and you can pitch a tent without worry while bike touring. Note that wild camping is still prohibited in protected areas, which are those belonging to the Natura 2000 reserve network and areas covered by Coastal Development Plans.
Be sure to carefully choose a camping location while wild camping in Portugal. Avoid camping near busy roads, instead finding a quieter location further away from towns and homes. If in the countryside, locals may allow you to camp on their property provided you remain respectful.
Outside of wild camping, Portugal has many campgrounds where you can spend the night which may include facilities. It’s a good idea to search for campgrounds before starting your tour, as their locations can help guide your route planning.
Double check your bike before starting the tour
Before heading off on a Portugal bike tour, double check your bike to make sure everything is working properly before riding.
Like any bike tour, you may encounter flat tires, broken chains, and worn-out derailleurs while cycling through Portugal. Biking on a long distance tour–especially when it requires riding on Portugal’s cobblestone roads—is likely to wreak havoc on your bike over time.
We made the mistake of not checking my bike properly for our first ride in Portugal, and I ended up stranded on the side of the road in a rural area with a broken chain. If we checked my bike beforehand (and double checked that we had proper tools in our bag) we could have avoided the problem altogether.
Related : Bicycle tour mistakes—the rookie mistakes I made on my first cycling trip
To avoid any potential pitfalls during your Portugal bike tour, do a thorough check of your bike to ensure everything is working properly and that you have all necessary repair gear. If anything seems funky, you can visit a bike shop in Lisbon or Porto before setting off on the tour.
Learn basic Portuguese phrases
English is widely spoken in Portugal, but it’s mainly limited to larger cities and towns. Bike touring through Portugal means cycling through remote areas in addition to cities, so knowing a few basic Portuguese phrases will come in handy during your tour.
Here are some of the most useful Portuguese phrases to know when bike touring in Portugal:
- Olá : Hello
- Bom dia : Good morning
- Boa tarde : Good afternoon
- Obrigado/a : Thank you (male/female)
- Por favor : Please
- De nada : You’re welcome
- Quanto custa : How much does it cost
- Prazer : It’s nice to meet you
As a romance language, Portuguese is not particularly difficult for English speakers to learn, especially if you’ve studied Spanish before. However, pronunciation can be tricky, so watching a few YouTube videos before the trip can help you understand how to say basic phrases in Portuguese.
Be sure to download Google Translate on your phone before your Portugal bike tour, too. Google Translate can help with translating menus at restaurants, reading signs, and asking for help if you encounter any mishaps during the tour.
Utilize bike paths in Lisbon
While Portugal is not as cycle-focused as countries like the Netherlands and Denmark, the amount of cycle paths in Lisbon pleasantly surprised us.
Neon green or red two-way cycle paths are found throughout the city, and although they do not all connect perfectly, it’s easy to figure out how to get from place to place on bike path.
As most cycle tourists in Portugal will begin their tour in Lisbon, it’s helpful to know where bike paths are located to ensure you can avoid busy traffic. Luckily, most paths are located along the waterfront, meaning you can traverse the city while avoiding the worst of Lisbon’s hilly landscapes.
Check out a map of Lisbon’s bike paths here .
Ride the train through Portugal
Portugal has an excellent train network, and fares are relatively cheap. You can take trains to almost every corner of the country, and most trains permit bikes provided the bicycle spots are not sold out.
There are three types of trains in Portugal, each with varying bike rules:
- Comboios de Portugal (CP) : Portugal’s national train operator runs transport throughout the country. Two bikes are permitted in each train carriage for free, provided there is bicycle availability on the train route.
- Alfa Pendular : Portugal’s high speed trains only permit bicycles if they are disassembled and packed in luggage
- Regional and urban trains : Regional trains, such as the train line through the Algarve region, allow bike transport free of charge, provided there is room in the train car.
On our Portugal bike tour, we rode trains several times throughout the country when we wanted to avoid busy roads. We started our tour in Évora instead of Lisbon, for example, and spending 90 minutes on a train to avoid Lisbon’s traffic was well worth it.
However, it’s important to understand that bicycle transport on trains is subject to availability. In busy tourist areas during peak season, it’s possible that bike spots could sell out on a train. Reserving tickets in advance and being flexible with travel times can help ensure you and your bike make it on the train without issue.
Take time to relax
It’s easy to preoccupy yourself with chasing miles or kilometers, but remember to enjoy the journey. Portugal is a beautiful country with diverse landscapes, food, and people. While you can certainly clock 12 hours a day on your bike, we recommend taking time to relax throughout your tour.
Whether it means spending an off day at a beach resort, enjoying a long lunch at a winery, or drinking a beer with locals in a small town, remember to appreciate the day-to-day moments instead of only the cycling.
Download maps offline
Downloading maps offline is always helpful on a bike tour, especially if you’re cycling through the countryside in areas with spotty cell service.
Before your Portugal bike tour, download offline maps of your route. You can download maps from Google Maps or from a more specialized outdoor app such as Kamoot or OsmAnd.
While we did not encounter issues with cell service on our Portugal bike tour, you don’t want to get lost without cell service. To be as responsible as possible for your tour, download offline maps.
The Algarve isn’t the best place to cycle in Portugal
Before our Portugal bike tour, we had heard amazing things about cycling through the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, but this region ended up being our least favorite cycling area of the whole tour.
In our experience, the Algarve has many busy roads and little cycling infrastructure. It was nothing like the quiet country roads we had encountered in Portugal’s Alentejo region, and we quickly found ourselves hopping on a train to avoid the busiest road sections of the route.
As another drawback, the Algarve is the most popular region in Portugal for tourists, especially in cities like Albufeira, Lagos, and Faro. We much preferred cycling and spending time in other areas of Portugal.
That being said, one of our favorite destinations of the whole trip was Sagres, the country’s most southwestern town, but we still wouldn’t consider this area the most cycle-friendly in the country.

Huw, good day. I keep getting random emails from web designers, thinking that I am “pedalPortugal”. I reply to some of them saying I have nothing to do with pedal Portugal and “will they please unsubscribe me” as it were. Does not seem to work. Any suggestions?
I think I must have emailed you when you first began many years ago, and something must’ve got stuck in the mechanics!?
Hi Nick. Sorry to hear you are getting spammed. Honest answer is that I have no idea why web designers are targeting you! I’m not aware that your email address is listed anywhere on the site and I can’t see how/why you’d be getting these messages. I also get a lot of unsolicited emails offering to improve Google rankings, redesign the site etc etc. However, I use a Gmail account and that seems to be very good at sending 90% of them straight into the spam folder. I can have a search to see if I have any old emails or comments from you and simply delete them all.
Planning on touring Portugal self supported soon. Have your book The Alentejo Circuit. Downloaded route into RWgps. Can this download be moved to Komoot? Not very good at this. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Louis Berube, Canada
Hi Louis. Sorry but I’m not a tech expert! Not used Komoot myself. You can export files from RWGPS in lots of different formats though. I’m sure one of them will work with Komoot.
Thanks Huw!

Hi Huw, I apologize in advance because I know this is a question you’ve gotten many times before. I’m planning a bicycle tour beginning and ending in Faro. We would cycle the border with Spain as far north as Marvao. Then we would cycle through Evora on our way to the Atlantic coast and eventually to Sagres. Then we would cycle along the coast back to Faro. Of course my question concerns “when to go”. Our friends who desperately want to join us can only go from May 27th to June 13th. I was hoping for earlier but…they can’t do it. Would that be much too hot? Last summer we cycled our western states where the temperature routinely got up into the 90’s Fahrenheit. You may not remember this but in 2016 my wife and I ran into you and one of your tours in Alter do Choa at the Hotel Convento! Thanks in advance for any advice!
Hi Ray Alter do Chao in 2016? That was our very first Border Castles tour! Anyway, in answer to your question. Yes, it will be hot. Very difficult to predict with any certainty but afternoon highs well into the 90sF would not be unusual. You may be lucky and have slightly cooler weather, it may touch 100F by mid June (hopefully not but there’s a chance)… I would aim to do as much riding as possible in the mornings!
Are there any Cycling clubs near Aljezur for Lagos / Monchique rides or nearby? I’m here for August and September. I will explore your tours for next year as I am spending more time in Portugal and will be relocating from Singapore. Thanks, Paul
Hi Paul. Sorry but I don’t have any local contacts myself. I suggest searching online forums or contacting bike shops in those areas.
Hi Huw, as planned, we came up fully laden from Faro to Louie, then took a very pleasant route across to Barranco Velho and followed the N2 up to Almodôvar. The gradients were not too bad and we had a good day getting through the hills given the late start out of the airport. We’ve followed much of your Spanish border route and aim to get to Almeida tomorrow night, when we have to decide on a good route up to Leon in Spain. We’ve looked at the route up from Vila Nova to Braganza, but the roads look like they could be busy. Is Miranda do Douro a better option or do you have any other suggestions, as there are plenty of opportunities to get over the border and continue up on the Spanish side but we are happy to stay in Portugal for longer if it works.
Hi John Will have a look at the map tomorrow and refresh my memory. I rode some parts around Mogadouro, Miranda and Braganca a few years. Beautiful scenery but a couple of big river valleys. Be in touch again tomorrow.
Hello again – hope the ride to Almeida went well. If you go over to Spain, then Salamanca is definitely worth a visit but from what I remember, there’s not a lot else out there and it’s all quite open and exposed – and not that interesting! From Almeida, I would go north on N221 and down to Douro valley (not to VN Foz Coa) and on towards Mogadouro (lovely town). There are a few places you can detour off but I don’t think the 221 is very busy – haven’t ridden all of this but it doesn’t go anywhere major. You’ll have a couple of days of tough riding but the scenery will be great. From Mogadouro there’s an old road that parallels the main IC5 (although there’s not much traffic on that). You can cross into Spain at Miranda but there are some beautiful quiet roads if you just keep on north in Portugal. If you go as far as Braganca, the N103-7 north into Spain is a lovely ride. Bit of a climb but you’ll be used to that by now! Love to hear how you get on – always looking for pictures and reports for my blog!
We just got home after cycling the Algarve with Pedal Portugal. I can’t possibly explain how smoothly everything ran, and how much fun we had, thanks to Huw and Carolyn…we were a large group, and they handled the numbers with ease. The food, the wine, the scenery, the exposure to Portuguese culture…it was absolutely fabulous. They had an ability to get us through the day smoothly, without ever giving us the feeling we were being rushed. They worked so hard every day, making sure that our experience was the best it could be (from finding shade for me at the lunch spots, pointing out the good gelato places in town, to walking us around the cliffs after our ride) Im definitely coming back! Thank again Huw and Carolyn Sandy
BORDER CASTLES GUIDED TOUR – OCT 2018 Just returned from the Border Castles ride with Huw and Carolyn. They are lovely people, and work hard to keep the trip running smoothly, while simultaneously appearing to have a great time themselves! Loved the accommodations, food, wine and beautiful small medieval towns.
For those looking to book a tour, this couple is awesome!! We have done two of the tours, taken others with us on our second trip, referred still others to this site and are in the process of booking a third. Best things about it: (1) fantastic hosts; (2) great routes; (3) ability to go at your own pace; (4) affordable (I am an Accountant so I do not take that comment likely); and (5) did I say fantastic hosts (?). Any questions?
And I didn’t even pay him to write this – or know he was going to. Thanks David!
Hi there….My husband and I are arriving in Lisbon Sept 13, 2018 and will be touring the country thru December 5th on our tandem bike…..we are in need of storing the 2 suitcases our bike comes in…which takes up about one square meter of room…do you have any ideas?…anyone you know with a garage or basement or other safe place to store these? your help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks for your time! terri&greg
Hi Terri Have been away so only just picked up your message. You could try left luggage at Lisbon Aiport – http://www.lisbon-airport.com/baggage.html Don’t know if there is any limit on size – you would have to contact them. Otherwise, find a friendly AirBnB host where you can stay beginning and end of your trip. No harm in asking! Alternatively, try the Warmshowers network for advice – https://www.warmshowers.org/ You might find someone in Lisbon who can either help or give you the local lowdown. Let me know how you get on! Cheers, Huw
Hi Hew. So we got back from 3 months of Portugal in Dec. We toured for 6 weeks and then rented a van and pretty much circumnavigated the country with day rides and hikes. Your new Heartland Tour looks very intriguing, i know your booked for spring of 2020 but ?????????
Hi Greg Glad you enjoyed Portugal – it’s a great place to explore. I think the Heartland tour probably has the greatest variety of landscapes of our tours yet. I’ll let you know if anyone drops out of the spring 2020 trips. Otherwise – if you haven’t already covered the ground – there are still places on the other trips! It would be great to have a house band along for the ride. Fellow tandem riders also always very welcome – particularly the “non-serious” cyclist type! All the best, Huw
Well, that sounds fun! let us know if you get an opening. It would be an honor.
Hello Huw, My fiance and I are back from Portugal after an amazing trip. We would like to thank you very much for all the information that you share on your site as well as the suggestions that you sent in answer to our questions. We would not have been able to build a proper itinerary without you. You are a great ambassador for Portugal, Michelle & Thierry
Happy to share the pleasure of riding in Portugal and exploring one of my favourite countries.
I just finished a 5 day tour of the Portugal Coast that used the route planning service of Pedal Portugal. Outstanding ride routes and stunning views, each one special in some way. I used my own bike, and I crunched the rear derailleur on a curb. Pedal Portugal directed me to a shop, just off my route, and the fix was done in 20 minutes. Thank you Huw Thomas! My special thanks to Dave Wright, my friend, who set this up.
I’m extremely pleased to discover this great site. I wanted to thank you for ones time just for this fantastic read!! I definitely loved every bit of it and I have you book marked to look at new stuff on your web site.
Thanks – very glad it’s useful!
We just finished the “Borders and Castles” tour with Huw and Carolyn and had a fantastic time! Everything was perfectly planned with great routes, delicious food and drink, awesome castles and sights everywhere! I would highly recommend this group and biking in Portugal to anyone.

Our Douro Valley, Portugal Bike Tours
With granite bluffs, terraced vineyards, and whitewashed villages, the Douro Valley in Portugal’s north has some of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe – and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tours explore the region along quiet lanes that snake their way up and down the steep-sided valleys. Along the route, you have the chance to visit medieval houses, grand churches, quaint villages, and excellent museums. The area is also one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, with wine – especially Port wine – having been produced here for over 2,000 years.
The region was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2001, primarily driven by its long history of winemaking, with an official demarcation as a winemaking region having been made in 1756. The landscape has been manipulated and terraced over centuries. The landscape is additionally dotted with quintas , which are farm complexes and estates built and developed for the purpose of winemaking.
Cycling in Portugal offers a unique way to explore the scenic vineyards, charming villages, and historic sites of the region. The winding roads and gentle hills provide for challenging yet enjoyable riding, with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Stop at local wineries to sample the famous port wine and visit historic landmarks while taking in the area’s rich cultural heritage. Overall, cycling in Portugal offers a memorable and enjoyable way to experience the beauty and culture of the region. Stay in unique hotels full of history and character.

Day 3: Vila Real to Pinhão
Day 4: Pinhão Loop Day
Day 5: Pinhão to Peso da Régua
Day 6: Peso da Régua Loop Day
Day One - Porto to Vidago
The Intermediate ride starts with a van transfer to Lagoa do Alvão, a lake just outside Vila Pouca de Aguiar. The first section of the ride is flat through open, rocky fields with wide-open vistas. After 6 km, the route descends through pine forests – typical of Northern Portugal – as it passes the Pedras Salgadas Nature Park. Soon after the park, a short climb brings you to a long, rolling descent into Vidago. The route is punctuated with small stone hamlets with cobbled streets.
Leisure riders will be transferred to the Pedras Salgadas Nature Park where they join the Intermediate ride, described above.
The Challenge route begins in Ribeira de Pena – at one of the many beautiful Baroque churches in the area. A descent from the town takes you to forested roads and then on to an open, steep ten-kilometer climb with expansive views. The route joins the Intermediate route shortly before the Pedras Salgadas Nature Park.
Ride across open vistas on quiet lanes punctuated with ancient stone hamlets
RIDE OPTIONS
10 miles with 750 feet of climbing
Intermediate 25 miles with 1,200 feet of climbing
Challenge 30 miles with 3,400 feet of climbing
OVERNIGHT TOWN
Vidago is a small spa town famed for its miraculous springs with medicinal carbonated waters. In the 19th century, the spa was popular with the royal court and became the most visited spa in Portugal. The waters here have been bottled since 1873.
Day Two - Vidago to Vila Real
Today’s routes head south through scenic and remote countryside.
The Intermediate ride follows a bike path. The views are typical for north Portugal with rocky outcrops, ferns and forested sections. Riders exit the bike path in Vila Pouca de Aguiar for lunch and then rejoin it for a long, straight section through flat farmland. The route joins the road for the final descent into Vila Real.
Leisure riders take a van transfer to Vila Pouca de Aguiar where they join the Intermediate route.
The Challenge route heads west from Vidago before turning south and climbing up through forests and past vineyards and olives groves. The first climb is dotted with houses and villages. The second is more remote and steeper with multiple hairpins. A smooth descent takes you to Vila Pouca de Aguiar for lunch, after which riders follow a modified version of the Intermediate route (avoiding a section of gravel) described above.
Pass through countryside typical of northern Portugal: rocky outcrops, ferns, forests, vineyards and olive groves
Leisure 20 miles with 600 feet of climbing
Intermediate 30 miles with 2,100 feet of climbing
Challenge 40 miles with 4,000 feet of climbing
Vila Real is a compact, university town on the Corgo River. As the name suggests, the city has a royal heritage with many grand palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. There are also interesting museums, churches, and gardens. The river here runs through a steep-sided gorge that has scenic walking trails along the riverbank.
Day Three - Vila Real to Pinhão
Today’s ride to Pinhão takes riders into the heart of the Alto Douro; an area that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The area is visually spectacular and has a rich history in wine growing, dating back over 2,000 years.
After an initial climb from Vila Real, the Intermediate route winds through small country roads, passing by small villages, farms, and rugged forests. The final seven miles of the route is a twisting descent into the pretty little town of Pinhão where riders get their first sight of the magnificent Douro River.
The Leisure route starts with a transfer to the village of São Martinho de Anta where it joins the intermediate route.
The Challenge ride winds deeper into the rugged countryside to the east of Vila Real before turning south to the pretty medieval villages of Sabrosa and Provesende. The route joins the Intermediate route for the final section into Pinhão.
The Epic route takes a much longer loop to the southwest, following the Douro River to the east into Pinhão.
Ride into the heart of the Alto Douro; an area so spectacular that is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Leisure 15 miles with 650 feet of climbing
Intermediate 30 miles with 2,300 feet of climbing
Challenge 35 miles with 3,100 feet of climbing
50 miles with 5,000 feet of climbing
Known as the home of port wine, Pinhão sits on a picturesque bend of the Douro River. Wine is the key attraction and there are many quintas to visit where you can tour and taste port as well as many other regional wines. There are also boat and train tours out of this attractive little town.
Day Four -Pinhão Loops
All today’s routes start by climbing the steep hill out of Pinhão to the village of Casal de Loivos where riders can take a short detour to the viewpoint that is claimed to be one of the most beautiful views in the world.
The Leisure ride is a simple out-and-back ride to the viewpoint.
After the viewpoint, the Intermediate route continues to climb through wine country to the pretty village of Alijó – a great option for lunch. After Alijó, the ride is a relatively easy cruise downhill, back to Pinhão.
The Challenge route continues west from Alijó past terraced vineyards before descending into Sabrosa – another stunningly pretty village and another great option for lunch. After Sabrosa, the route turns south and passes quinta after quinta before descending back to Pinhão.
The Epic route follows the Challenge route to Alijó where it heads southeast to begin a challenging loop that takes in the riverside town of Tua as well as some spectacular mountain passes on both sides of the Douro River.
A viewpoint with what is claimed to be one of the most beautiful views in the world
Leisure 10 miles with 1,400 feet of climbing
Intermediate 25 miles with 2,800 feet of climbing
Challenge 35 miles with 3,900 feet of climbing
55 miles with 6,500 feet of climbing
Day Five -Pinhão to Peso da Régua
The Leisure route starts with a train ride from Pinhão to Covelinhas. In Covelinhas, it is a steep climb out of the train station but the views over the river and the surrounding landscape are spectacular. The route then parallels the Douro River into Peso da Régua.
Note that there is no Intermediate route available today.
The Challenge route begins with a tough 7-mile climb to the northwest of Pinhão, passing through vineyards as well as rugged, wild countryside. At the top of the climb, you begin a long, rolling cruise past vineyards, cobbled villages, and olive groves. The final descent to Peso da Régua is fast and technical.
The Epic route heads into the hills south of the Douro River. There are three big climbs, and each winding climb gives front row seats to the colossal landscape of the Douro valley. The village of Armamar, at the bottom of the second climb, makes a great lunch stop. The descent to Peso da Régua is 9 miles on smooth roads with more outstanding views.
Ride through vineyards as well as rugged, wild countryside with spectacular views across the valley
Leisure 10 miles with 650 feet of climbing
Intermediate None
Challenge 30 miles with 3,000 feet of climbing
40 miles with 4,700 feet of climbing
Peso da Régua
Situated in the heart of the Douro Valley, Peso da Régua has a rich history dating back to Roman times. In the 18th century, the town became the main trading post for port wine and is now home to some of the best restaurants in the area as well as being the starting point for scenic train rides and river cruises.
Day Six - Peso da Régua Loops - Last Day
Today’s rides head across the car-free bridge to the south bank of the Douro River.
The Leisure ride is an out-and-back ride on small lanes alongside the river. The roads are rolling with fine views of vineyards, their quintas and, of course, the river.
The Intermediate ride follows the Leisure ride for five miles before heading uphill to the historic town of Lamego with its castle, cathedral, sanctuary, and iconic stairway. After enjoying lunch in Lamego, you descend quickly back to Peso da Régua.
The Challenge route follows the Intermediate route for the most part but adds in more riding west, alongside the Douro River.
The Epic route is the same as the Challenge route with an additional loop south from Lamego. This additional loop climbs through remote villages, fruit orchards, and pretty countryside. At the top of the climb the route changes to pine forests and riders enjoy a fast descent back to Lamego, where they rejoin the Intermediate route back to Peso da Régua.
Head uphill to the historic town of Lamego with its castle, cathedral, sanctuary and iconic stairway
Leisure 15 miles with 1,300 feet of climbing
Intermediate 20 miles with 2,000 feet of climbing
Challenge 30 miles with 2,900 feet of climbing

BIKE CHOICES
Hybrid bike.
Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.
Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)
Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.
If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.
Receiving & Assembly per bike charge to receive bike from shipper, assemble the bike and repack it and deliver it to a shipper at the end of the tour.
Bike Boxes a per box charge for the extra logistics needed to handle bike boxes during a tour. Note: this fee can be avoided if you leave your box with your start/end hotel.
Tandem Bike a per bike fee for the extra logistics to handle a tandem bike that is brought by a guest.

Once I heard someone saying that “Spring time in Portugal starts in January!” Wow… In fact, we were cycling under a deep blue sky and the temperature was pretty nice for January!
In March, everybody rides a bicycle enjoying the sunny days. Snow is not common: you can only see snow in the northern mountainous regions. Portugal is an excellent place for cycling.
Portugal is one of two countries in the Iberian Peninsula. This is one of the south regions in Continental Europe, therefore it is a hot and dry region.
Some say September and October!
September and into October are good times to plan a bike tour in Portugal. The temperature is not so hot and it is warm enough to feel good outside. In Autumn you can cycle in Portugal taking in the gorgeous scenery with the yellow and brown fields along the way.

I prefer the Spring time!
In my personal opinion, the best time to go cycling in Portugal it’s Spring time! Definitely! As of the second half of March until the first half of June the flowers are blooming and the fields are covered with wild flowers of different colors.

So, what is the best time to plan a bike tour in Portugal
From early March to late June, the energy in the air invites us to cycle and the sun feels nice and not too warm, temperatures during the day are around 18ºC and 26ºC (64ºF and 80ºF), depending on the region of Portugal and the month.
Also, from September until the first half of November it is a good time of the year to plan a bike tour in Portugal. The heat is not so intense as in the end of June until August (35ºC/95ºF), and the rain usually starts in the second half of November. And there is also beauty in the landscape in the Fall, although as I said I prefer the green and the flowers in the Spring.
December and January are usually colder months, the temperature during the day is usually around 10ºC (50ºF). But when you cycle you generate heat, so we can say that Portugal is an excellent place to ride a bicycle almost all year round.
The southern regions of Portugal, Alentejo and Algarve, are warmer and drier than the northern areas, which are a bit more cool and rainy.
The best advice as to the best time to go cycling in Portugal is to head south, to the Alentejo and Algarve regions during the winter, spring and autumn months. Porto and the North of Portugal are best cycled during the summer months.

Regions in Portugal
- Douro Valley
Portugal Bike Tours
Portugal is having its long overdue moment. No longer just the place where Port wine is produced, the Douro Valley won UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001 and is often described as the most beautiful wine region anywhere. With verdant valleys and terraced vineyards that plunge into the Douro River, the viticulture here has evolved into a world-renowned wine industry.
The history of the Alentejo, the south-central region between Lisbon and Spain, is told through the spectrum of structures: ancient megaliths, converted convents, medieval castles, and Roman temples. The cork trade is king here, but the region also yields marble quarries, olive groves, and—of course—rolling vineyards of Touriga, Aragonés, and Arinto grapes.
Called the Hawaii of the Atlantic, the Azorean archipelago is a happy hodgepodge. Pineapple plantations, evocative ocean views, and volcanic slopes check all the expected island boxes. But São Miguel is full of surprises—including a thriving tea industry, a defining dairy trade, and the unexpected ease of reaching this emerging tropical destination.
