REVIEW: Danna Paola Shows Pop Is Thriving on U.S. ‘XT4S1S’ Tour Kick-Off

In a recent Instagram live, Danna Paola said she wanted to bring back the golden age of pop en español from Mexico. She name-checked legendary Mexican acts like Paulina Rubio, Thalía, Lu, and María Daniela y Su Sonido Lasser . With the launch of her XT4S1S Tour in the U.S., Danna is creating a space for herself among Mexico’s most iconic artists. During the opening night on Aug. 11, not only did she revive Latine pop, but she pushed it into the future with her fierce performances.

In her stellar San Jose, CA concert, she channeled American pop royalty from the aughts, like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Danna was dancing, singing, and serving fierce looks—something that concerts by mainstream acts across the board have lacked lately. She performed her biggest hits, proving that Latine pop is not only alive and well but actually thriving.

Dicen que tengo mala fama 😮‍💨 @dannapaola #XT4S1STOURUSA pic.twitter.com/doSFYDa9fh — Lucas Villa (@myprerogative15) August 12, 2023

In an opening video for the concert, Danna Paola talked about wanting to embody the words euphoric, freedom, and ecstasy. She did just that with her red-hot performances of “Mía,” “Mala Fama,” and “Cachito,” which included an interpolation of Wisin y Yandel’s “Noche De Sexo.” While singing, she also pulled off sexy choreography in sync with her dancers. There was also plenty of hair-whipping that had the crowd going wild. Later, Danna showed off her powerhouse vocals with an emotional performance of “Amor Ordinario.”

Throughout her career, Danna Paola has shown herself to be a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. That inclusivity also came across in her concert. When a fan tossed a rainbow-colored flag to the stage, she wrapped it around herself and sang “El Primer Día Sin Ti,” a song from the 2009 telenovela “Atrévete a Soñar” soundtrack. It was a special throwback for longtime fans who’ve been with her since she was a child star. Danna also performed the colorful “TQ Y Ya,” which has become a queer anthem. During the performance, her two male dancers were embracing each other, and she even joined in on the guys’ perreo.

Una noche loca @dannapaola 💅🏼 #XT4S1STOURUSA pic.twitter.com/gOkcuMtp2J — Lucas Villa (@myprerogative15) August 12, 2023

Another standout moment from the concert was Danna Paola’s salute to Belanova. She performed a psychedelic version of the trio’s classic song “Me Pregunto.” The ecstasy reached an all-time high for the finale. Danna turned the San Jose Civic into a club with her last arsenal of hits that included “Agüita,” her breakup anthem “ 1Trago ,” and her first live performance of “Tenemos Que Hablar.” A dance party broke out with her feel-good performance of “ XT4S1S ,” which included a gratify-defying flip.

With the XT4S1S Tour , Danna Paola is bringing back the spectacle of the height of pop concerts from the 2000s. She sang her heart out while executing on-point choreography with her dancers. Danna is demonstrating that her pop star excellence as a Latina is on a global level.

As the lights began to dim, the arena burst into a roar as the multi-talented performer took on the stage. With a large raised-sloped platform filling up the stage, Danna Paola took mid-center stage starting the night with a fan favorite, Mia . Taking full advantage of the sloped platform, the performer kept moving up and down the platform. Appearing as if she was plucked out of the matrix universe with her long black trench coat, Danna commanded the stage with such ease as she belted out notes.

Keeping the excitement going, dancers took on the stage as Danna proceeded to perform songs like Valientes and Mala Fama . The first three songs were just foreshadowing the non-stop action that was yet to come as fans constantly danced the night away.

Taking the moment to thank the fans, Danna informed them how grateful she was to perform in Cancun and hoped that everyone had an amazing night despite seeing how hot it’s been. As fans found the perfect moment to show their love to the singer, the venue filled with vocals as fans sang Happy birthday. With her birthday quickly approaching, fans threw several plush dolls to the stage as they sang causing the singer to burst into tears as she constantly thanked them for all the love.

The night progressed, and the action never stopped. It was as if the crowd was constantly feeding energy to Danna. From the amazing choreography to hitting impressive notes, there’s no doubt that Danna was made for the stage.

The performer has never been shy to talk about the importance of mental health. Midway into the show as she performed her powerful ballads, Amor Ordinario and Dos Extranos , the singer discussed the value of protecting yourself from horrible relationships, and how one really needs to take care of their mental health. She went on to say that therapy has really helped her throughout the years and that everyone should always be open to it. With such a sincere moment from the heart, fans were seen tearing up as they shouted in agreement with the singer.

Danna Paola has made her mark as a Popstar in Mexico and is aiming for a larger territory as she gets ready to embark on her first U.S. tour later this summer. With a night filled with love and excitement, this is a must-attend show. Check out below for the upcoming U.S. Tour dates to see if she will be coming to a state near you.

Tell Me Más: Danna Paola on Breaking Through the Stigmas and Finding Her Voice

Published on 8/31/2023 at 2:00 PM

danna paola world tour

In our Q&A feature series Tell Me Más, we ask some of our favorite Latine artists to answer the questions only their BFFs know about them, revealing everything from their most recent read to the songs that get them hyped. This month, we sit down with Mexican pop star Danna Paola.

Danna Paola may have gained fame as a child star, but her development as a woman in the music industry is a work in process for this Mexican artist. While being a singer is something that she has been doing her whole life, this new era for Paola is all about self-discovery. Danna was chosen to play Amy Granados, the lead in the successful children's series "Amy, la niña de la mochila azul," which premiered in 2004. She also voiced Rapunzel for the Latin American Spanish-language dubbing of the Disney film "Tangled" and worked in Netflix's hit Spanish teen drama series "Elite," where she played Lucrecia "Lu" Montesinos Hendrich. Despite all of her achievements, Paola stepped away from the world of acting, in order to pursue her passion for making music.

"This is like the first moment in my career where I'm being very honest with myself and with my art and with my music," she says. "So, I love being able to introduce myself like this and being able to say, today I am Danna, this person, and this artist." Being thrust into the limelight at a young age, Paola realized the industry was very male-dominated: one where she was taught that "calladita me veía más bonita" (you look prettier quiet).

"[I was told] you don't talk, you don't speak, [and] you don't say anything about if you like it or not," Paola tells POPSUGAR.

Paola has experienced everything from sexist talk to men making passes at her. She quickly learned that she had no choice but to speak up.

"It's not being rude," Paola says. It's being just (fair), and honest in defending my ideals, my art, and of course, my rights as a woman."

The artist shares how she believes that standing up for who you are and what you believe in will prove to be helpful for the next generation of female artists. "It's a fight every day for women and our rights," she says. "So, I won't be silent even if people can believe that I am 'loca' or whatever."

"My mental health journey has been very painful, very hard, but at the same time quite enlightening. My music is therapy."

Breaking through these stigmas has been something that Paola has worked on throughout her career. "My mental health journey has been very painful, very hard, but at the same time quite enlightening. My music is therapy, she says in Spanish. She also sees music as a way to simultaneously connect with her audience as they experience similar struggles.

"The connection between my fans and my art is for us to heal together in this crazy world with music," she says. Surviving this industry for so many years has been no easy feat for Paola. She credits therapy, music, and always surrounding herself with the right people as one of the ways that she's managed to prioritize her mental health.

Paola is very adamant about being truthful in her music. She describes her musical sound as "dark pop," noting influences from Evanescence, Paramore, and Tokyo Hotel. But it's those dark elements that feel truly authentic for Paola.

"I think this is the moment when I break the walls and I start saying this is who I am. I'm a dark b*tch. And I'm a drama queen," she shares.

Paola recently released the visuals for her song "Tenemos que hablar," where she is seen watching this old version of herself. It is very symbolic of where she is at in her life a the moment, as she returns to her acting roots for the first time in three years.

Taking risks is something that is important for Paola. It's also an aspect that she is loving about the current state of Latin music. Regional Mexican artists such as Grupo Frontera and Peso Pluma have collaborated on songs with reggeatón superstar Bad Bunny and El Alfa, who is known as "The King of Dembow." The artist believes that there are no limits when it comes to creating music. Seeing these fusions in musical genres excites here because it's proof that Latin music is only continuing to evolve.

"Not everyone is trying to do reggaetón and we are not all trying to do corridos tumbados," she says. "My thing is doing pop music y tambien me encanta el reggeatón." She acknowledges that it's fine for artists to try new genres while still doing songs with their own unique flair. Paola just kicked off her first US tour — XT4S1S — where she channels some of the pop greats like Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncè. "It's very theatrical," Danna says. She's also incorporated what she's learned during her healing journey into this tour and has made it a practice to not fixate on the final product. Her goal these days is to just enjoy the process. Having that mentality has helped Paola feel confident throughout the tour.

"I've worked on this for a long time now, and from my heart." The good energy is contagious, she says. "It's very therapeutic for me also. I love to talk," she jokes.

One of the biggest lessons Danna has taken away as she continues to grow as an artist is the importance of remaining true to yourself. Growth has been something that she has really dedicated herself to. "It's been a really great journey for me as an artist, porque, I finally discovered who I am in my music," she says.

Read on to find out who Paola is dying to collaborate with next and the latest show she's binged.

POPSUGAR: How would you describe your personal style?

Danna: Edgy, dark, sexy, and bold with a twist of cuteness.

POPSUGAR: What is your favorite home-cooked meal?

Danna: Chicken veggie soup during the winter and tuna salad sandwich.

POPSUGAR: When was your first star-struck moment?

Danna: When I met Katy Perry! I cried like crazy.

POPSUGAR: What's your favorite snack?

Danna: Something sweet and salty. Best of both worlds.

POPSUGAR: What is your dream collaboration?

Danna: Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, or Adele.

POPSUGAR: What's your favorite thing to do to relax?

Danna: Leave my phone first. I like being at home with my dogs and my boyfriend drinking beer or wine and watching a movie while also cooking dinner.

POPSUGAR: What's the last series you binged?

Danna: I don't have much time to binge series right now. I think the last one was "The Last of Us," and I loved it.

POPSUGAR: Who is your biggest inspiration?

Danna: I've been inspired by so many people and artists in general — not just singers. At this moment in my life, I've found inspiration in everything and everyone who captures my attention and resonates with my soul.

We Need To Talk About Danna Paola, The Mexican Pop Star Going Global

The singer and former child star chats exclusively with NYLON about the premiere of her “Tenemos Que Hablar” video and her first U.S. tour.

Danna Paola is ready to reintroduce herself. After turning heads at awards shows and music festivals in recent months, the Mexican pop star is in the midst of her first ever U.S. tour and working on a new album.

But if you’re a millennial living in Latin America, the 28-year-old multihyphenate needs no introduction — and her global ascent probably comes as no surprise. Paola’s been a fixture on TV screens and stages since she was 6 years old, playing the titular character on the beloved children’s telenovela María Belén. Across the early 2000s, she juggled starring roles on hit TV shows like Amy, La Niña De La Mochila Azul while recording children’s songs and entire studio albums before she was even a teenager. (You can still see her adorably smiling on the covers of her first few albums on streaming services.)

By 18, she was playing Elphaba in Mexico City's production of Wicked in 2013, becoming the youngest actress to play the role in a professional staging of the iconic musical, with composer Stephen Schwartz praising her as “ destined to be a big star. ” She'd quickly prove him right, playing the love-her-or-hate-her mean girl Lucrecia (“Lu”) across three seasons of Netflix’s Elite from 2018 to 2020.

Towards the end of her run on the series, though, Paola decided to focus on music over acting. Her recent albums, like 2020’s SIE7E + and 2021’s K.O. , have been packed with catchy pop rhythms and rich vocal performances, and she’s racked up hundreds of millions of streams with Mexican chart-toppers like “Sodio” and “Calla Tú.” But in the last few months, she’s also made a splash on the internet with a handful of hair-flipping live performances and charismatic TV appearances. In early July, she was a guest judge on the first season of Drag Race Mexico . “I was raised in the [LGBTQ+] community since I was 8 years old and they embraced me and made me understand that it’s OK to be different,” she told the contestants before watching two queens deliver a Lip Sync For Your Life to her 2022 hit “XTAS1S.”

At the end of that month, Paola delivered two headline-making performances at Univision's 2023 Premios Juventud , which had Camila Cabello visibly declaring “ yes, b*tch! ” from her seat. “I put so much of myself into any of my performances, and that was no different for Premios Juventud ,” Paola tells NYLON over email. “My crew and I went through a lot of rehearsal to make sure our vision was executed to the best of our abilities. I loved performing with Sofía [Reyes on our song “tqum”] , and the reaction was so positive that we could really feel the love.”

danna paola world tour

And just a few days later, she was halfway around the world, thrashing on Steve Aoki’s DJ table on the main stage of Tomorrowland in Belgium, performing their still-unreleased EDM collaboration, “ Paranoia.” “It was such an honor to represent Mexico at Tomorrowland,” Paola says. “Steve has been involved in Latin music before it boomed like it has, and we’ve collaborated multiple times. Working with him is always an honor. I really respect and admire Aoki. He's a great human being.” (While there, she also ran into Paris Hilton, an interaction she describes as “iconic”: “She’s someone we all grew up following, so meeting her and realizing how sweet and down to earth she is was surreal,” Paola says.)

Paola is a prolific collaborator, having teamed up in recent years with Spanish music icon David Bisbal, Swedish EMD star Alesso and Colombian heartthrob Sebastián Yatra. Most recently, “tqum,” her collab with Reyes, got a remix from “Unholy” diva Kim Petras . “I still can’t believe it,” Paola says. “So far, these collaborations have flourished organically, and I want it to stay that way. I don’t like to force anything, but there are definitely collaborations that I’m always manifesting."

All of these moments have led to “Tenemos Que Hablar” (or “We Need to Talk”), her latest single, which dropped earlier this month. The shadowy synth-pop anthem marks a bold new chapter in her career, and finds her penning a letter to her younger self as she embraces adulthood: “No puedo responderte a cosas que ni yo sé / Me estoy encontrando y al fin se siente bien,” she sings. (“I can't answer things that I don't even know / I'm finding myself and it feels good at last.”)

danna paola world tour

The track, along with its intense music video directed by Edgar Esteves, are high drama at its finest, as Paola goes racing towards an uncertain future, maniacally laughing through tears and sprouting wings. For a pop queen with a resume full of telenovelas and musical theater, it all makes perfect sense. But when it comes to her artistry, Paola says some of her influences might surprise people. “I’m an emo girl,” she says. “I grew up on My Chemical Romance, Evanescence and Paramore. But I’ve also been inspired by Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Britney Spears. There truly are no limits with music.”

Or borders. “My first tour in U.S.A. — my eyes fill with tears, and my heart swells,” Paola says of the Xt4s1s Tour Usa trek, which kicked off last week. “I am still processing what we are about to live, something I’ve been dreaming about for so long.”

For an artist who spent her childhood telling other people’s stories, Paola’s ready to tell her own. “This [live] show has changed the lives of each one of the people who are part of it. It has given me back my breath. It has healed me,” Paola says. “It has made me believe more in myself and in life itself. We are going to write a new story. I am sure it will be memorable.”

Danna Paola Says She’s Finishing Her New Album and Getting Ready to Drop Another Song

By Lucas Villa

Danna Paola is capping off the biggest year of her career as a host of the 2023 Latin Grammy Awards. Earlier this year, the Mexican pop star toured the U.S. for the first time while teasing her next album. Paola caught up with Rolling Stone ahead of the awards on the red carpet and talked  about her full-circle moment in Seville, Spain and her new music on the way.

After conquering Mexico as a children’s telenovela star, Paola crossed over to the mainstream thanks to her starring role in the first two seasons of the sexy Netflix hit Elite . She played the resident bad girl Lu in the series that was based in Madrid. Now she is back in Spain to host the Latin Grammy Awards.

“I was here for the premiere of ‘Elite’ three years ago,” she says. “This is my first time being here for a week. It’s been incredible!”

“It was my best experience ever!” she says. “I had such a great time. The tour has been a place to train my instrument [my voice]. I have become much stronger.”

Since returning with euphoric “ XT4S1S ” last year, Paola continued to tease her next album with the singles “1Trago” and the deeply personal “Tenemos Que Hablar.” She promises that her fans don’t have to wait much longer for the LP or more music.

Danna Paola leaves behind her child star past with a new album and new name: "Danna"

On the heels of her new album, "Childstar," the 28-year-old talks to TODAY.com about discovering who she is as an artist and person.

You can call her Danna.

After 28 years of being recognized as Danna Paola, the singer and former actor has rebranded, shedding part of the moniker that made her an international household name. With a rebrand to simply "Danna," the entertainer is reclaiming her identity and embarking on a bold, fresh chapter with a new album titled “Childstar,” available now.

“This is a new beginning for me,” Danna tells TODAY.com over Zoom from her home. “Changing my name, it is just 1% of this new era and this new person I’m becoming.”

Conversing back and forth in English and Spanish, Danna says the name of her seventh studio album isn't specifically about her beginnings in the entertainment industry.

“Yes, I’m a child star, but everything that I have lived and built has led me to create this album,” she says. “I found myself as an artist. I found my voice. I found the love I have with music, the relationship I have with my music. It is a spiritual connection with my art. This is who I am as Danna.”

“Yes, I’m a child star, but everything that I have lived and built have led me to create this album.”

She adds in Spanish: “ Creeme que estoy muy orgullosa del resultado. ” Translation: Believe me, I'm very proud of the result.

Danna's child star beginnings — and the decision to quit acting

Danna Paola

Since the age of 4, Danna — born Danna Paola Riveera Munguía — has been entertaining audiences on TV screens. She first appeared on the Mexican version of “Sesame Street,” “Plaza Sésamo." At age 6, she released her debut album “Mi Globo Azaul,” before landing her 2004 breakout role in the children's telenovela “Amy, la niña de la mochila azul.”

The show starred Danna as Amy, a kind-hearted girl who lived with her fisherman father, and followed her adventures with her friends and mermaid pal. The series ran for 115 episodes.

From there came a second and third album in 2004 and 2005, followed by more leading roles in hit telenovelas like “Pablo y Andrea” and “Atrévete a soñar.” One could liken her career path to the likes of Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, who also mixed acting and singing with their projects while growing up in the public eye.

Danna only further cemented her star power when she starred as Elphaba in the first Spanish-language production of "Wicked," opposite Ceci de la Cueva, who played Glinda. The critically acclaimed production opened in Mexico City at Teatro Telcel in October 2013 and ran until January 2015.

Danna Paola

At the age of 18, Danna was the youngest actor to ever portray Elphaba in a professional theater production. And throughout her time on stage, she was also releasing albums — but looking back, she says she felt she wasn't being her authentic self.

“I discovered a few years ago that I was more the singer who acts than the actress who sings,” she says, explaining that she feels that music gives her freedom.

“That’s why I left acting. It was a really hard decision, because I have my career thanks to great roles,” she says. “My last great project was ‘Elite’ and it was a role that gave me worldwide recognition.”

Danna Paola

Danna portrayed Lucrecia “Lu” in the Netflix Spanish teen drama set in an elite private school with students from different societal backgrounds, complete with a murder mystery. She appeared in the first three seasons before leaving acting behind. Danna calls the role “really special,” but says she came to realize she felt she had been playing a character all her life and didn’t know who she was. Danna Paola, she says, was also a character she created.

“As an actress, you put yourself, your emotions, your thoughts and everything inside of you for that character and become the character,” she says. “I realized that music has helped me discover myself as a person — what I like, what I don’t like. It’s part of my self-growth.”

Growing up, she says, people would stop her on the streets or anywhere she went and call her by her characters’ names, like Amy, María Belén or Patito. She felt disconnected from herself.

“At this moment, I wouldn’t portray another character because I lost so many years of my life in fictitious stories,” she pauses in thought. “I left Danna behind and I didn’t know who I was. I just became every character that I played.”

Danna Paola

Danna's new beginning after a 'heavy depression'

Danna says she’s been “really emo” her whole life.

She says she's always gravitated toward a darker vibe, despite projecting the opposite early on in her career.

“I mean, they’re stages, right?” she says. “But right now, I feel very comfortable in my own skin and my own thoughts and the way I live life. It’s something that empowers me.”

From that began the creation of “Childstar,” her seventh studio album, and her latest after 2021’s “K.O.”

“I did this transition after my last album,” she says. “I lost creativity, fell into a heavy depression, so I took my time to figure out who the f--- I am, who I want to be and the story I wanted to tell through my songs.”

She says that she had highs and lows when it came to believing her career was over, which caused her to fall out of love with what she was creating. “I was really tired. I never stopped working,” she says. “I said, ‘I want to live. I don’t want to waste my time doing something that I don’t love anymore.’”

In the last four years, she credits therapy, taking a forced break amid the pandemic, and her boyfriend, producer Alex Hoyer, for getting into the right headspace.

“I dedicated myself to developing a beautiful relationship with Alex, who is also my producer on this album, outside of the public eye,” she says. “We created together professionally and we created a beautiful relationship, and from there I started to have a good relationship with myself.”

Danna Paola

Danna says that the 13 tracks on “Childstar” are autobiographical and touch on many personal topics. But rather than being straightforward in her lyrics, she prefers expressing herself through poetry and metaphors.

“People think this album is me talking about being a child star,” she says. “(I would say) it’s more about the artistic side of it and showing this is who I am now , like in a really aggressive (way) with the aesthetic, the name change.”

The opening track, “The Fall,” is an emotional spoken word ballad about the loneliness and disappointment she felt from being in the public eye. “You don’t know me/you don’t know s--- about me,” she croons in the song, saying that she’s not a shooting star.

There’s also “222,” which she says is her favorite and among the funkiest. The early 2000s-inspired Spanglish song is about meeting someone and the intensity of being together, feeling fireworks and “wanting more.”

Danna also describes the final song, “Amanecer" as “a hug for your soul.”

This album, she says, “Is a gift for me and for little Danna.”

Speaking of little Danna, she understands that some people might not be onboard with this new phase of her life and career — and she's okay with that.

She says “people live in the past.” Referencing fellow child stars like Cyrus, Gomez and Demi Lovato, Danna says, “It’s hard for people to understand that those characters they watched on TV grow up like any other human being.”

But, she adds: “I think everyone in the world, every human being has the opportunity to start again.”

Danna Paola Is Putting Her ‘Childstar’ Past to Rest With Her Most Honest LP Yet

Danna Paola's new 'Childstar' album is an open book on the popstar's greatest pleasures and sins set to house and electronic music.

Danna Paola

Despite being only 28, Mexican singer-songwriter Danna Paola has already lived a complete life of an entertainer with a 20-plus-year career.

On “Childstar,” the Mexican singer and actor’s new LP, Danna — who recently announced she’s dropping her last name — is reclaiming the narrative of her youth when she first earned her stripes as a child star in telenovelas that constantly played on television both stateside and across Latin America. “Childstar” is Danna’s most layered project to date. House and electronic music replace the bubblegum pop Danna served fans in her early discography, and the change is drastic. Danna knows this.

Popular on Variety

Thematically, the record is all about escapism — the partying, the sex and the thrills of chasing romance. It represents the beginning of a new artistic era that puts Danna’s past as a “Childstar” to rest.

“Somehow, hitting my darkest, lowest point — when I was so depressed — made me want to share that with the world,” she stops herself, almost acknowledging how contradictory that sounds. “This record isn’t my life story, necessarily. It’s a sign that for me, I’m moving on. It represents where I’ve been able to get to by putting myself first.”

“Childstar” has Danna singing in English and Spanish, since she “speaks and thinks in Spanglish,” but that overarching duality of pop culture is also represented in the music influences; For example, track two, “Blackout,” is a tribute to Britney Spears’ 2007 album of the same name. That record was released in a tumultuous era of Spears’ life as she battled public scrutiny to a debilitating degree. In that same lane, she cites Spears’ “Lucky” (“She’s so lucky, she’s a star / But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart”) and the ending of Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” as overall thematic touchstones for the concept of “Childstar.”

These, “remind me of my childhood in the sense that people stop viewing you as a person,” she says. “I was very alone throughout my early years in the industry. I had my family, and they supported me… but I was alone. I felt like I was at the height of my career and I just wanted it all to end.” And as the tracklist of “Childstar” unfolds, it’s clear this isn’t a sob story. “These songs are what made me,” Danna says. “You hear me discovering my sexier side, you also hear me grappling with love, my encounters.”

For the people who knew Danna in the earlier points of her career, it may be shocking to hear her be so forward in “Atari,” where she whines and growls about sex. She also sings over breezy R&B about the first time she fell for a woman in “Platonik.”

And although she’s admittedly “nervous as fuck” about how her fans will react to the experimentation and honesty — and sonic range — on this album, they have already more than shown up for her. Danna has one of the most fervent followings of Latin American superstars. When she announced that she wanted to update her social media handles to just “@Danna” — a move solidifying she’s put the past behind her — her fans bombarded the current owner of the account with requests to give up the account. Danna had to issue a public apology.

“I know they’re ready to receive — I’ve had them waiting for so long — whatever I may throw their way but this album is totally new territory for me,” she says, followed by a long pause. “If you’d like to join me, please do. And if you don’t, there’s a lot of music out in the world, I hope you find something you enjoy.”

Danna Paola Talks Child Stardom, Netflix’s Elite, and How Her New Music Is About Living Through Darkness

By Lucas Villa

Danna Paola performs on stage

Danna Paola has gone global . This past year, the Mexican pop superstar toured the US for the first time, attended Paris Fashion Week on behalf of Mugler, and was recently named as MAC makeup's new global brand ambassador. At the same time, Danna is working hard on completing her next album, on which she faces the demons of child stardom and explores her path into adulthood, including recently cutting ties with a “controlling” management team.

"This era is about darkness and being your brightest self in the darkness," the 28-year-old multi-hyphenate star tells Teen Vogue over Zoom from her home in Mexico City. "This album talks a lot about the darkness and how I found myself through a fall where I felt lost, where I felt my career was over, and when I felt that I didn't want to do this anymore."

Danna Paola singing into a mic black and white

Paola first became a staple in Latinx homes in the US and Mexico as a children's telenovela actress. After appearing on a Mexican spin-off of Sesame Street at 4 years old, she landed her first leading role in Amy, La Niña De La Mochila Azul in 2004, playing a girl who becomes a mermaid. She then moved onto the Televisa series Atrévete A Soñar ; she also sang the show's sweet theme song "Mundo De Caramelo" about living in a carefree Candyland.

"Being a child star was really nice, fun, playful, but at the same time, I realize I missed out on a lot of things as a kid," she says. "I grew up with cameras. I remember doing my homework and having my parties on the set. Now I understand why I have a lot of anxiety being among a big group of people or why I have a bit of agoraphobia in certain places. Now with a lot of therapy, I can have an emotional balance and stable mental health about my work and my personal life. Now I can separate the two. Before I couldn't do that. I'm very happy to have survived being a child star."

As Paola moved through her teens, she decided to step away from the telenovelas and her burgeoning music career. She found solace in playing the fallen witch Elphaba in Mexico's first Spanish-language production of the Broadway musical Wicked . Her performance in the role, which included an incredible live rendition of "Defying Gravity," even drew praise from the show's composer Stephen Schwartz. Paola was able to take her skills as an actress and singer to new heights; she describes the experience as her “school of art in performance.”

"With that character at that moment in my life, I started believing in my power as an actress and singer," she says. "That character helped me mature in many ways in my life. On a personal level, that character gave me a lot of strength and helped me become a woman. [Elphaba] has inspired my new era, that when you get your heart broken a lot, you become the villain of other people's stories, but at the end of the day, you're choosing yourself and fighting for yourself."

Danna Paola looks at the camera backstage

To grow more as an artist and creative, Paola decided to leave Mexico to move to Spain. After finding a casting call in her junk mail for the Netflix series called Elite , she sent in her audition and landed the role of resident bad girl Lucrecia. Through the series about sex-crazed high schoolers trying to cover up their crimes, she reached a global audience.

" Elite literally changed my world," she says. "When I started, I was going through a very difficult moment in my life. I had ended a very tumultuous relationship. On top of that, I felt lost. Lucrecia let me be the villain that I always wanted to be for the first time. She showed me how to be strong, how to say no, how to empower myself as a woman, and that I don't need man by side to feel valuable.”

From her exposure on Elite , Paola's music career started booming as well. To process this wild time in her career, she looked to music as an outlet. Paola turned rumors about her romantic relationships created by the tabloids into her breakthrough hit " Mala Fama ." She playfully name-checked fellow Latinx singers like Maluma, future collaborator Sebastián Yatra, and Ozuna as men that she's been linked to. The tongue-in-cheek song has amassed over 300 million streams on Spotify.

"I'm like, 'Damn, I can't even have a friend because now he's my boyfriend in the f*cking magazines and press,’" she recalls. "One day I went to the studio fed-up. I wanted to write a song about not caring about the infamy around me. If they say I'm a f*ck girl, then I'm going to be a f*cking f*ck girl. It was a really powerful song for me."

Throughout her career, Paola has also used her platform to support the LGBTQ+ community. She has released colorful songs that have become queer anthems like " Agüita ," which was written by lesbian artist Javier Mena, and the defiant " TQ y YA ." Back in July, Paola appeared as a guest judge on the first season of Drag Race México . "I've been extra my whole life, so I believe part of my character as a singer is inspired a lot by drag queens," she says with a smile.

"I was brought up by the LGBTQ+ community," she adds. "I'm very grateful that they're my family. They're a safe space for me. I've had their unconditional love and support since I was a little girl. Today my gratitude comes out 100 percent in being an ally and defending love at any cost. I want to make people understand that love is universal.”

Danna Paola Talks Child Stardom Netflixs Elite and How Her New Music Is About Living Through Darkness

Paola is now more hands-on with her career. She co-produced the euphoric lead single " XT4S1S " with her boyfriend Alex Hoyer for her upcoming album. Earlier this year, she also co-produced the confessional synth-pop track " Tenemos Que Hablar ." Danna revealed through the music video that she cut ties with a team that she says extended full control over her life, including forcing her to dye her hair blonde two years ago.

"I believe you can learn from each situation in your life to help you evolve and not be stuck there," she says. "I'm grateful to have experienced that because that gave me the tools for me to be who I am now. At the same time, I wish I was stronger and braver to change the things in my life that I was putting up with for a long time because of fear. Today, I feel very brave to be able to tell my story from a healthy place and through my art."

In September, Paola wrapped-up her very first tour of the US. She channeled Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera concerts from the 2000s as she belted out her hits while executing fierce choreography. "I'm creating something special with my career as a singer that I've completely left behind acting because this is a 24-7 job," Paola says. Now she is focused on finishing up her next album while dropping her last name to reintroduce herself.

"This album talks about the catharsis I went through," she says. "You are the architect of your own life and you have the ability to create the best version of yourself. Now I can say that I've found myself as a woman. It's very healing. It's a relief. I feel like I'm in my best moment as a person and as an artist. Danna is a really strong name. I want to show to the world who that person is now."

'Elite' star Danna on making 'peace' with early fame, why she quit acting for music

danna paola world tour

Danna has mastered the art of playing a role, so now she’s flipping the script.

Born Danna Paola Rivera Munguía, the Mexican pop singer who recently shortened her stage name from Danna Paola to Danna, entered show business at age 5. She cut her teeth as an actress with wholesome roles in the youth telenovelas “María Belén,” “Pablo y Andrea” and “Atrévete a Soñar,” among others. Danna’s star rose into adulthood with leading roles in the Spanish-language dramas “La Doña” and Netflix’s “Elite .”

But after two decades of bringing characters to life, Danna quit acting in 2020. Having released a series of pop albums from ages 6 to 25, Danna committed to a full-time music career. Her newest album, “ Childstar ,” which drops at 8 p.m. ET April 11, finds the 28-year-old singer reconciling her unique upbringing with a search for self-identity.

“Building myself through characters all the time and through different personalities was really crazy, so that’s why I think I started molding myself based on many personalities,” Danna tells USA TODAY in an interview conducted in English and Spanish. “And in therapy, I understood that there were things that were really (messed) up and that didn’t allow me to be my most authentic person. So, for this album, I made my peace with that.”

'It wasn't easy': Mexican popstar Gloria Trevi reflects on career, prison time, new tour

But for those expecting a cynical album about the pitfalls of fame, think again. The 13-track LP is largely a collection of cathartic dance-pop in which Danna combs through the kaleidoscope of life experiences that have placed her at the center of her own story.

“I found myself as an artist. I found my voice, my way to produce my music, how I want to write my own songs,” Danna says. “It’s a beautiful journey, but at the same time, it has been really hard and emotional.”

How the ‘darkness’ of depression inspired Danna on ‘Childstar’

A face smudged with jet-black tears . A fishnet-clad devil trashing a dressing room. Bodies writhing in a strobe-light-filled nightclub. Unlike the bright spotlight of child stardom, the video imagery for “Childstar” is moody and gritty, which Danna says is a tribute to her battle with depression.

“I wanted to deconstruct the image people had about me in this pink, perfect world and this sweetie thing with this aesthetic,” Danna says. “This darkness is what made me find myself as an artist, and if it wasn’t for that depression and the hole I was living in, I wouldn’t have discovered myself.”

Danna also channels that darkness on the album’s opening track “The Fall,” a mournful ballad in which the singer accepts her inner turmoil but vows to rise above the pain, a lesson she has learned from living in the public eye. “You’re going to see me fall thousands of times because I’m not perfect, but I’m going to make art and music from it,” she says.

“I’m a human being, and I make mistakes too every day, public or not public. I don’t want to be perfect. I just want to learn about life. I think that’s something that’s given me a lot of peace today.”

Danna broke free from the ‘comfort zone’ of acting with music

Danna’s final acting role before diving back into music was Lu Montesinos, a sharp-tongued schoolgirl on the teen crime thriller “Elite.” Danna, who won a Premios Juventud award for her performance, said she ultimately left acting because she was “tired of being someone else instead of discovering myself.”

“As an actress, I enjoyed so much being in another skin and another world in my mind, and I became that person. It takes a lot to detach myself from a character after three, four, six months. Lucretia, which was my last character, really left particles of her DNA in me.”

'Elite,' 'Lupin,' 'Squid Game': How Netflix's non-English shows became global hits

But Danna hasn’t left the dramatic art form completely behind. The singer, who performed an emotional monologue for the “Childstar” trailer , said she has been able to fuse the heightened emotion of acting with the unrestricted self-expression she has found in music.

“I think that I’m feeling free making music,” Danna says. “It’s not because I hate acting, but it was a comfort zone just being an actress and not believing in myself as an artist and as a singer. I love singing, and interpreting a song and really feeling what I wrote is really important to me.”

Why ‘Childstar’ makes Danna feel ‘empowered’

On “Tenemos Que Hablar,” one of the songs that rounds out “Childstar,” Danna takes a sobering look at a relationship that has crumbled in the wake of the singer’s newfound independence. “Today, my happiness doesn’t depend on anyone,” she sings over a pulsing dark synth-pop beat.

“In the end, happiness is a choice. It’s a thing you that you have to create in your life every day,” Danna says. “When we put our happiness in others and depend on them, we limit ourselves to create our own magic, our own world and our way of viewing life.”
