Investors predict Europe's next unicorns at Tech Tour Growth

Investors predict Europe's next unicorns at Tech Tour Growth

I recently had the pleasure of attending a Tech Tour Growth50  event hosted by  Tech Tour in Paris. These curated European events allow startups and scaleups to meet key industry professionals and foster potential partnerships and funding.

Tech Tour and over 90 of the most active international VCs and growth funds vote based on factors such as revenue growth, market potential, and funding raised.

Here are the winners:

2023 growth award winners

Digital: ICEYE (Finland)

european tech tour

ICEYE  owns and operates the largest constellation of radar-imaging satellites, providing customers with reliable and frequent imagery. This enables the rapid detection and tracking of changes on the Earth’s surface, regardless of time of day or weather conditions.

This capability is vital for government and commercial uses, including insurance, natural catastrophe response and recovery, national security, defence, humanitarian relief and climate change monitoring.

ICEYE  has raised $313.3 million in funding over ten rounds. It most recently  raised  was $136 million in February 2022 from a Series D round.

Health: Huma (UK)

Healthcare company   Huma  has developed an evidence-based, patient-centred platform for remote patient monitoring that improves connected care delivery to patients and accelerates research and therapies.

It offers enhanced decision-making tools for clinicians, such as treatment and diagnostic recommendations for serious conditions and advanced triage alerts.

The platform also supports decentralised and hybrid clinical trials that get effective treatments to patients faster.

In March this year, the company became the only company in the world to receive EU MDR 2017/745 Class IIb certification for a disease agnostic Software as a Medical Device. This makes Huma’s technology the highest classified configurable disease-agnostic platform in the sector today.

Huma  has raised $217 million in funding over ten rounds. It most recently raised £25 million from a Corporate Round in March 2022.

Sustainability: Refurbed (Austria)

Refurbed  is addressing the significant environmental impact of e-waste in the electronics industry, developing a resale platform to put more usable tech back out into the market.

Since launching in 2017, it’s saved 170 tonnes of electronic devices from untimely death, resulting in a cumulative reduction in CO2 impacts by 31,000 tonnes.

Over 800,000 products have been traded hands via the platform, with the company planting one tree in Haiti, Madagascar, Kenya, Indonesia, Mozambique, or Nepal for every device sold.

Refurbed has raised $73.2 million in funding over four rounds, most recently raising  $54 million Series B in August 2021.

The European Investment Council drives deep tech innovations

The European Innovation Council (EIC) is pivotal to the event, playing a significant role in achieving the EU’s deep tech innovation ambitions. It comes with a budget of over EUR 10 billion under the EU  Horizon Europe  programme and a mission to identify, support and scale up deep tech innovation.

The following three companies from the  Growth50 list , which are also part of the EIC ScalingUp deep tech programme, received the honorary Investment Impact Award for having raised significant funding in the past 15 months despite the market conditions:

PASQAL (France)

PASQAL  is a leader in neutral atoms quantum computing. Its quantum computers control neutral atoms with optical tweezers, using laser light to manipulate quantum registers with up to a few hundred qubits.

Cofounders include Alain Aspect, who won a Nobel Prize for his work on quantum entanglement in 2022.

The company recently launched Quantum Discovery , the first neutral atoms quantum computing exploration platform for workplace teams.

PASQAL has raised €127.5 million over seven rounds, most recently raising €100 million Series B in January 2023.

SMART Photonics (The Netherlands)

SMART Photonics is an independent foundry for Indium Phosphide photonic integrated circuits, which provide small-scale integration and high performance combined with low energy consumption.

european tech tour

Photonic integrated circuits enable a variety of next-generation communication and highly accurate sensor applications in telecoms, health care, smart mobility, and sustainable industrial processes.

The company has raised $78.2M million over six funding rounds.

IQM (Finland)

european tech tour

IQM  builds on-premises quantum computers for supercomputing data centres and research labs, providing full access to its hardware. Industrial customers benefit from a unique application-specific, co-design approach.

The company has raised  €233.8  million in funding over seven rounds.

The Tech Tour Growth Europe event was co-organised by Tech Tour, EuroQuity-Bpifrance, BCG and Deepwave Ventures and is co-funded by the European Commission under the European Innovation Council (EIC) ScalingUp project.

european tech tour

It all started 20+ years ago by investors recognizing the need to meet with companies from different countries in Europe. The first tech tours were organized by volunteers – imagine 40 investors getting together on a bus and travelling for 3 days across Switzerland to meet companies. Some pitches took place on the bus.

This is how Tech Tour was born. Since then we have been supporting our community to build real, personal relationships, by creating a space that is highly selective and sector focused.

Calling all future entrepreneurs! Les Roches launches European Tech Tour competition for disruptive BBA students

By Les Roches

13th August 2019

Uber, AirBnB, Virgin Galactic, WeWork – the hospitality industry is bursting with tech startups, and the opportunities for future entrepreneurs are unlimited. At Les Roches, we’re giving the next generation of disruptors the chance to develop their big idea alongside their studies, with our European Tech Tour competition.

The Tech Tour competition is open to all BBA students starting their studies in September 2019. After submitting an initial business idea before October 15, entrants will develop it throughout the semester, before pitching it to an expert panel in January. The winners will take their ideas on the road, meeting innovative startups in Switzerland and Holland, visiting incubators, seeing classroom theory in practice, and making game-changing connections.

Inspiring real-world innovation

Hospitality is changing like never before. Emerging technologies such as Blockchain, AI and Augmented Reality are redefining the user experience, creating new possibilities and opportunities. At Les Roches, we’re teaching students the new codes of hospitality, developing a disruptive expertise for an industry evolving from hotels and holidays, into workspaces, personal travel, peer-to-peer accommodation and Space.

The Tech Tour is a unique opportunity for a handful of BBA students to go behind the scenes at these new hospitality businesses, learning from their founders and gaining money-can’t-buy entrepreneurial insight. Visiting more than 10 organizations over three days, students will be immersed in the startup ecosystem, allowing them to see what it takes to turn an idea into a successful tech business.

Once back on campus, students can implement everything they have learned, taking their idea to the next level with the help of a community of tutors, mentors and industry professionals. Whether a student wins a place on the Tour or not, the competition process puts classroom theory into practice, and instils the methodology needed to launch a business in the real world.

How to enter the Tech Tour competition

The Tech Tour competition is open to all BBA students starting at Les Roches in September 2019.

How the competition works:

1. Write 700 words on your business idea that will shape the future, and submit it to us by October 15, 2019. Submit your idea here.

2. You will refine your idea during your first semester (BBA1), alongside your studies.

3. At the end of BBA1, in mid-January 2020, you’ll present your idea to a panel of experts, serial entrepreneurs and industry professionals.

4. If the panel believes your idea is innovative, feasible and has the potential to truly disrupt, then you will be awarded a place on the three-day Tech Tour. All travel and accommodation is fully paid.

5. Use the Tour to learn real-world startup lessons, make key contacts, and return to campus with money-can’t-buy insight to take your startup to the next level.

Ready to take the first step on your entrepreneurial journey? Learn more about the Tech Tour, our BBA, and tell us about your big idea .

Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler is embarking on his first tour of Europe

MADRID (AP) — Capitalizing on an impressive moment in Spanish-language music, Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler is embarking on his first tour of Europe.

“Even Don Quixote didn’t get as far as urban Spanish-speaking music is getting today in the world. You can go everywhere and you will find music that was written in Spanish,” he told The Associated Press in an interview. “I’m happy to see that (Spanish) opens doors to places that I never thought that we could get before.”

His award-winning latest album, “Tinta y tiempo” (“Ink and time”), earned him six of his 13 Latin Grammy Awards, part of a haul that includes an Oscar.

On his tour Drexler will present “Derrumbe,” a new song about the loss of love that he rescued from his notes. He said it will be included in a TV show created by Mexican actor and director Diego Luna.

The European tour will be more intimate than the shows of recent years, with voice, guitar and an open repertoire — a “first date” with an audience that Drexler expects will be seeing him for the first time.

“I have always looked West,” he said, with performances in the United States, Canada, Mexico and elsewhere. “I have so much work in that part of the world that I didn’t look East enough.”

He looks forward to seeing some European cities for the first time and visiting others such as Paris and Berlin after many years. The tour will take him to Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden, among other countries.

After the tour ends in mid-June, he will return to the leather armchair in his studio in Madrid to sit with a guitar and a blank piece of paper and “try to get lucky.”

But as his repertoire grows, songwriting becomes more complicated because “the more you release, the more space that occupies in your brain,” Drexler said.

“Once you’ve written 200 or 300 songs, each and every new song has to open a little space,” he said.

Resorting to artificial intelligence is not an option, at least for now. He tested ChatGPT and, although the result “was perfectly written, from a syntactic, orthographic point of view,” it lacked poetry.

“I like biographies and I like songwriters, and I like to get to know the personality of a person. And I like the mistakes that guide you through unexpected places. So, I still prefer songs written by human beings,” he said.

Drexler also enjoys collaborations in the creative process, such as the ones with C.Tangana , Rubén Blades , or Noga Erez in his previous album.

“It’s a relief for me, it relieves me from myself,” he said. “My worst enemy when it comes to writing is my past, my obsessions, the way I work. It’s what I am. And I’m happy to show it, but at the same time, it’s a big, big burden.”

In collaborating, there are no restrictions in the kind of music or the generations that listen.

“I don’t think that the music we did in the past was the (good) music, like most of my generation,” Drexler said. “(I’m) more interested in the music that my 12-year-old daughter listens to than the one that my generation used to listen to. So I try to be open to different things.”

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

European car manufacturer will pilot Sanctuary AI’s humanoid robot

european tech tour

Sanctuary AI announced that it will be delivering its humanoid robot to a Magna manufacturing facility. Based in Canada, with auto manufacturing facilities in Austria, Magna manufactures and assembles cars for a number of Europe’s top automakers, including Mercedes, Jaguar and BMW. As is often the nature of these deals, the parties have not disclosed how many of Sanctuary AI’s robots will be deployed.

The news follows similar deals announced by Figure and Apptronik, which are piloting their own humanoid systems with BMW and Mercedes, respectively. Agility also announced a deal with Ford at CES in January 2020, though that agreement found the American carmaker exploring the use of Digit units for last-mile deliveries. Agility has since put that functionality on the back burner, focusing on warehouse deployments through partners like Amazon.

For its part, Magna invested in Sanctuary AI back in 2021 — right around the time Elon Musk announced plans to build a humanoid robot to work in Tesla factories. The company would later dub the system “Optimus.” Vancouver-based Sanctuary unveiled its own system, Phoenix, back in May of last year. The system stands 5’7” (a pretty standard height for these machines) and weighs 155 pounds.

Phoenix isn’t Sanctuary’s first humanoid (an early model had been deployed at a Canadian retailer), but it is the first to walk on legs — this is in spite of the fact that most available videos only highlight the system’s torso. The company has also focused some of its efforts on creating dexterous hands — an important addition if the system is expected to expand functionality beyond moving around totes.

Sanctuary calls the pilot, “a multi-disciplinary assessment of improving cost and scalability of robots using Magna’s automotive product portfolio, engineering and manufacturing capabilities; and a strategic equity investment by Magna.”

Sanctuary AI’s new humanoid robot stands 5’7″ and lifts 55 lb

As ever, these agreements should be taken as what they are: pilots. They’re not exactly validation of the form factor and systems — that comes later, if Magna gets what it’s looking for with the deal. That comes down to three big letters: ROI.

The company isn’t disclosing specifics with regard to the number of robots, the length of the pilot or even the specific factory where they will be deployed.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.
