12 best Christmas cruises for 2024 and 2025

Kristy Tolley

It's the most wonderful time of the year ... to go on a cruise.

Trade the glow of a Christmas tree in your living room with the warmth of the sand and the sun on a holiday cruise. Skip the mulled wine on your stovetop for some of the world's best at a European Christmas market.

Christmas cruises can level up your holiday celebrations — and are an ideal opportunity to escape the conventional holiday celebrations in place of an adventure.

On a holiday cruise, you can leave the cooking, cleaning and decorating to the pros and simply enjoy time with your family. Christmas and New Year's cruises can also be good options for people trying to avoid the crush of relatives or who don't have family but still want to spend the holiday surrounded by other people and festive cheer.

Winter cruises feature holiday-themed activities for all ages, special feasts that capture the magic of the holiday season and port calls at destinations that let you enjoy the holiday spirit without shivering from frigid temperatures.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It's never too early to plan your holiday getaway, especially as these cruises are among the quickest to sell out. Here are the best Christmas and New Year's cruises still available in 2024 and holiday sailings in 2025 to book now, as well as some useful tips about holiday cruise travel.

Holiday cruise tips

december cruise holidays

Before you book, keep in mind a few key facts about Christmas cruises.

Rates will be high

Expect cruise fares to be among the highest of the year during the holiday weeks as demand increases.

The best prices will be for early bookings; you likely won't find any last-minute discounts. If you do, they might be on windowless inside cabins or guarantee cabins , where the cruise line picks your room location.

Sailings will sell out

Holiday sailings sell out earlier than other itineraries, as people plan their holiday vacations months in advance. Suites and special cabins (family, spa and solo rooms and so forth) book up the fastest.

Consider booking your holiday cruise as early as possible, as the December sailings often fill up a year in advance .

Consider your own decorations

The crew will decorate public areas on board, but passengers often go all-out decorating their doors and cabins for the holidays.

Magnetic doors on cabins are blank canvases for the imagination. You'll find stateroom doors on Christmas cruises covered in wrapping paper, adorned with garlands or dotted with holiday-themed images.

It's best to double-check with your cruise line before attaching anything to your door or in your cabin, as rules and regulations differ per line. If you're not creative, check if your cruise line offers cabin decoration packages for preorder prior to your sailing.

Specialty dining is not advised on the actual holiday

Most of the specialty dining restaurants on major cruise lines have set menus that do not change for the holidays.

Your best bet for traditional holiday dinner options (think roast turkey, smoked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy) will come from the main, included dining options on board. It can't hurt to ask if any extra-fee restaurants are doing a Christmas or New Year's menu if you're looking for a more intimate holiday meal.

Expect holiday hours in port

Most cruise ships will plan for Christmas to be a sea day, but if you're in port on Dec. 25 (or on Boxing Day, as many islands celebrate the day after), expect shops, restaurants and attractions to have modified hours or be closed.

Onboard services won't stop, so if all your top lunch spots in port are closed, you're always guaranteed a hot meal on the ship.

Consider a holiday bonus for the crew

Cruise ship crew members go beyond the standard service on all lines for the holidays, whether it's a kind note wishing you well, a Champagne toast for New Year's or a fanciful towel creation.

They can't be at home celebrating with their families because they're working hard to make your holiday special. While gratuities are often included in your fare or added automatically to your final bill, consider tipping extra on a Christmas cruise. The hardworking staff will appreciate your extra generosity during the holiday season.

Best Christmas cruises for 2024

If you're on the hunt for the ideal holiday getaway, consider these Christmas cruises for this year's holiday vacation. (Note: These sailings had availability at the time of writing, but prices may change or ships sell out at any time.)

13-night New Zealand holiday cruise on Celebrity Cruises

december cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 20, 2024-Jan. 2, 2025

Ship: Celebrity Edge

The most appealing holiday itinerary on Celebrity Cruises takes you Down Under for a two-week celebration, sailing round-trip from Sydney.

You'll cruise during the region's summer season with an itinerary that traverses the picturesque Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound before making port stops in Dunedin, Napier, Auckland, Tauranga and Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

The cruise doesn't call on Australian ports, but you can easily tack on a land-based pre- or post-cruise stay since the ship sails from Sydney.

If you're feeling the holiday spirit, sign up to join a group of crew and passengers to go caroling around the ship. Cookie decorating, visits with Santa and Christmas games are part of the holiday fun. On New Year's Eve, gather for a special party with a complimentary midnight Champagne toast, party favors and live music.

The lowest cabin fares start at $1,664 per person, plus $444.55 in taxes, fees and port expenses.

15-night South Africa Intensive Voyage on Azamara

december cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 20, 2024-Jan. 4, 2025

Ship: Azamara Pursuit

Azamara is known for its travels to less-frequented ports, often with longer stays providing more time for immersion. Go somewhere new with Azamara's 15-night Christmas and New Year's cruise around South Africa. Azamara Quest sails round-trip from Cape Town with stops along the east coast of South Africa, including Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay, Durban and Mossel Bay.

Holiday events include caroling concerts, pop-ups with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate, and a special tree-trimming party on Dec. 24. Azamara Quest will time its popular White Night pool deck party to coincide with New Year's Eve. The line has a tradition of seeking out the oldest person on board to ring the ship's bell two minutes prior to midnight to literally "ring out the old." Then the youngest passenger on board will "ring in the new" as the clock strikes 12 o'clock.

Rates start from $2,784 per person, not including $196 in taxes, fees and port expenses.

7-night Christmas Markets on the Danube cruise on AmaWaterways

december cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 9-15, 2024

Ship: AmaBella

A river cruise through Europe is the most convenient way to visit many of the continent's famous Christmas markets.

Your ship will dock in the heart of each city, usually just a few steps from the markets. Sailing with AmaWaterways during the holiday season, guests return from a day exploring the markets to events on board that include tree-trimming, caroling and a fun European tradition called "Shoes for St. Nick," where passengers who leave their slippers outside their stateroom awake to find them filled with sweets.

Unlike most Christmas-related retail stores in the U.S. that stay open through the holiday season, many of Europe's Christmas markets close up shop by Dec. 22, so you'll need to take your vacation before Christmas itself. AmaWaterways' seven-night Christmas Markets on the Danube cruise takes place aboard AmaBella. You'll be immersed in the holiday spirit with port stops in Passau, Germany; Linz, Vienna and Weissenkirchen, Austria; and Budapest.

Rates for the weeklong cruise start at $3,699 per person, not including $224 in port charges and taxes.

7-night Western Caribbean cruise on Princess Cruises

december cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 21-28, 2024

Ship: Sun Princess

Debuting in February 2024, Sun Princess is the first of Princess Cruises ' brand-new Sphere-class series of ships.

Take the line's newest flagship for a Christmastime spin on a round-trip Fort Lauderdale itinerary that features port calls at Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; and Roatan, Honduras. Three sea days give guests plenty of time to explore all the attractions on board, from a dome-covered pool area to a top-deck family activity zone.

The 4,300-passenger vessel will be about 21% bigger than the current biggest ships in the Princess fleet. It will be the line's first ship that features suites with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck. Sun Princess will also boast an innovative new "cabana cabin" along the ship's extra-wide 10th deck with access to a private deck area.

It will be easy to get into the holiday spirit while on board Sun Princess, with festive decor throughout the ship and an occasional "snowfall" in the Atrium. If you're traveling with kids, you can leave cookies for Santa and carrots for his reindeer. Christmas caroling, storytime and other holiday events will help you create special holiday memories.

Rates for the Western Caribbean cruise start at $957 per person for an inside cabin, not including $153 in taxes, fees and port expenses.

12-night Antarctic Explorer cruise on Viking

december cruise holidays

Sail dates: Dec. 22, 2024-Jan. 3, 2025

Ship: Viking Polaris

While instinct might say to stop by the North Pole to check in on Santa's operations, it's just too cold, dark and icy for cruising. Instead, head toward the South Pole and Antarctica for a Christmas expedition.

Spend close to two weeks exploring the farthest reaches of the earth on the Antarctic Explorer itinerary aboard Viking 's Polaris. The route sails round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina, before traversing the Drake Passage and cruising Antarctica for seven days. You'll have a cruise line-provided pre-cruise stay in Buenos Aires the night before you fly down to Ushuaia to meet your ship.

You'll explore the icebergs and cliffs of Antarctica on Christmas, presumably followed by a hot cocoa or a warm cocktail on deck. Afterward, treat yourself to Nordic-inspired dishes like smoked salmon and caviar, along with holiday treats like krumkake (a Nordic take on the cannoli) and sandkaker (Norwegian sugar cookies).

As with all Antarctica itineraries, ports and destinations on the continent change by the day, depending on weather and climate conditions. Rates for available staterooms on the cruise start from $15,495, including airfare, port taxes and fees.

Peak Season Crowds

December is a popular time for vacationers, especially around Christmas and New Year.

  • Popular Ports: Some popular destinations might be crowded, leading to longer wait times for attractions or sold-out excursions.

Adjusted Itineraries and Timings

  • Shortened or Extended Port Calls: Due to local holidays or festivities, the time spent in certain ports might be altered.
  • Shop Timings: In some destinations, local shops or attractions might have different operating hours due to holiday observances.

Tip: Always double-check the daily cruise itinerary and plan your activities accordingly.

These areas are hugely popular for some winter sun and the dynamic atmosphere draws visitors in even more. So if hot weather is on your Christmas list, cruises including Cape Town, Auckland and Sydney are the way forward.

For the best cold-weather cruising, head to the north and stop off in Norway, Finland, Northern Germany and Amsterdam where you can cosy up at the Christmas markets and step into postcard-perfect snow-covered scenes.

Cruises in all parts of the world run across the entire festive period. Whether you want to get away for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day , Boxing Day, New Year's Eve, New Year’s Day, or all the above, liners like MSC and Costa Cruises can take you wherever you want in style. And with a range of incredible add-ons, activities and experiences to choose from on board and on the shores, you can make it a truly unforgettable Christmas tailored to you.

Cruising in December is an undoubtedly extraordinary experience. Whether you’re sailing to winter sun or embracing the cold in more wintry destinations, the biggest reason to cruise at this time is to celebrate the festive period away from home. When you compare a December cruise with a January cruise, the biggest difference is that all the festive celebrations are packed into the last month of the year. Christmas light switch-on events, markets, fireworks displays, and traditional festivals are just a few of the experiences and activities on offer in the huge variety of port destinations. And because of the abundance of things to do, you can end up paying a premium for some destinations which can be avoided by booking well in advance in many cases.

If the festive activities are less important to you than the weather, there’s very little difference between the two months. In the southern hemisphere, temperatures might climb slightly higher in January, while the weather in the north stays mostly chilly.

The best gift of the holiday season our epic offers..

Sometimes, the best holiday gift isn’t something you unwrap at all. It’s something you open simply by clicking a button on a computer screen. Maybe it’s even a gift you gave yourself. This year, treat either yourself or your loved ones to something better than a new gaming console or yet another pair of wool socks — an epic cruise with Virgin Voyages. Our December cruise deals make cruising a no-brainer gift this year, with stellar savings and value that’ll make an already memorable holiday even better.

3 of the best places to sail away from winter in 2024

You might just feel like cozying up by the TV with some hot cocoa during these cold winter months, but what if we told you that you could be reclining on a hammock in 80 degree sunshine with a paloma in hand? Yeah, we thought so. Whether it’s sailing the warm waters of the tropical Caribbean, or exploring the far-flung South Pacific with a voyage down under, we’re teeing up some pretty incredible getaways this winter.

Visiting the Caribbean is always a treat, but it’s particularly gratifying when all your friends are at home navigating black ice on their way to work. Our Riviera Maya itinerary is one of the best December cruises, leaving from Miami and sailing to Mexico, stopping at Cozumel, Playa del Carmen. You’ll also spend an additional day and night at The Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas. Our special Scarlet Caribbean Holiday 2023 voyage is another great way to escape to the Caribbean this holiday season. Sailing from Miami on December 22 to Puerto Plata and Bimini, we’d gladly swap out our traditional Christmas firs for some nice palm fronds this year.

The South Pacific might fly under your radar, but it’s actually one of the best places to visit in December — and, well, all year round. Our epic 5-night cruise from Melbourne to Hobart brings you from mainland Australia across the Bass Strait to the rugged island of Tasmania, where you'll stay overnight in its capital.

Are there better cruise deals in December than Black Friday and Cyber Week?

When it comes to savings, Thanksgiving gets most of the attention. Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, we tend to think that once December hits, we’re doomed to pay full price for everything. Well, at Virgin Voyages that’s not exactly true. We’ve got some irresistible December cruise deals that’ll give you just the motivation you need to pull the trigger on your next cruise vacation.

We’re offering a Splash for your Bash, perfect for leveling up your group trips. For $250 per cabin, you’ll get a bottomless brunch event at The Wake or Razzle Dazzle, and a special dinner party with curated drinks and desserts. And since we know the holidays can be tough on the wallet, we’re alleviating the financial stress with our monthly payment plan option. This limited-time offer lets you put $0 down when you book your next voyage.

Top 3 reasons to travel in December

December is one of the most popular months of the year for travel, particularly in the cruise industry. Ironically, what makes it so desirable for traveling is the same thing that makes it undesirable for everyday life – the weather. Sub 30-degree temps are reason enough to set sail for warmer climes. Whether you’re lounging on a white sand beach in Grand Turk, the Bahamas, or Puerto Rico, or venturing south of the equator in Sydney, Melbourne, or Hobart, we’ve got plenty of hot places in December calling your name.

If you’re looking for another reason to cruise in December, you officially have our permission to use our cruise deals as an excuse. Whether you’re taking advantage of our monthly payment plan option or getting a great deal on a group celebration by adding a Splash for your Bash , it shouldn’t take much convincing for your friends and family to see the value in a December cruise.

You probably don’t need us to tell you, but cruises are also the perfect birthday travel idea. If your birthday is in December (we’re looking at you, Sagittarius’ and Capricorns), why not celebrate with an epic voyage? So make a list of all the friends you wouldn’t mind sharing a cabin (and a few drinks) with, pick your dream birthday travel destination, and celebrate a very happy birthday in the Dominican Republic. Or Australia. Or Greece. Oh, and let JLo take care of the invites.

If all that wasn’t enough, we’ve also got special New Year’s sailings on each of our three ships, designed specifically to  help you ring in the New Year in style – including our festive sailing to Honduras aboard Scarlet Lady and our New Year’s celebration from Australia to New Zealand aboard Resilient Lady. Because while we’re pretty excited about December, it’s never too soon to start looking ahead to January.

7 of the Best Places to Cruise in December

Last updated: November 29th, 2023

St. Kitts, one of the best places to cruise in December

  • Find a Cruise

December is one of the best times to take a cruise. Whether you’re looking to escape the winter cold or just prefer to celebrate the holiday season at sea , the end of the year is the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind on a ship.

So what are some of the best places to cruise in December? Considering the winter season, year-round beach destinations like the Caribbean land at the top of the list. Unexpected locales, such as New Zealand and Patagonia, are worth considering, too.

Whether you’re looking for family-friendly cruises, are planning a romantic couples’ getaway, or looking for a unique adventure, here are some of December’s best cruise destinations.

1: The Bahamas

Clear waters of Blue Lagoon Island

Blue Lagoon Island, Bahamas

One of the best places to cruise in December is to The Bahamas , where the pristine white sand and turquoise water will melt away any thoughts of chilly weather back home. Kids will enjoy snorkeling around coral reefs, while adults can relax and read a book while swinging in a hammock.

In December, days drift by with clear skies and warm sunshine. Enjoy the perfect weather by kayaking off Balmoral Island Beach, or bathing in the clear waters of Blue Lagoon Island.

Atlantis Resort in Paradise Island, Nassau

Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas

If you’re looking for holiday gifts, stop by the Nassau Straw Market, which offers plenty of items made by local vendors such as straw hats, jewelry, and souvenirs. For upscale shopping, head to Paradise Island.

Sleepy Bimini is a wonderful contrast to the bustle of Nassau, with dreamy white-sand beaches and superb snorkeling. If you’re seeking thrills, join a snorkel tour among reef sharks, or try your hand at game fishing.

Clear waters of CocoCay, Bahamas

CocoCay, Bahamas

Speaking of thrills, many of our Bahamas cruises call at CocoCay , our award-winning private Bahamian island. Here, you’ll find everything from hair-raising waterslides and ziplining to a blissful lagoon pool, stylish beach clubs, and even overwater cabanas in the style of the South Pacific.

2: The Caribbean

Flamingos walking along the shores of Aruba island

Aruba, Caribbean

The Caribbean , with its picture-perfect beaches, is another wonderful winter escape. There is no better place to cruise in December than the Caribbean, as the weather is generally perfect everywhere. It’s simply a matter of choosing the individual islands that appeal to you.

Take a Southern Caribbean cruise and admire the Dutch-built waterfront of Willemstad, Curaçao’s rainbow-colored capital. Snorkel over colorful reefs and shipwrecks in Aruba, or rest and recharge at Castries in St. Lucia, which was once called “the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean” by novelist James A. Michener.

Family swimming in Stingray City

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

Plan a Western Caribbean cruise vacation and stop in Cozumel, Mexico, where beachside restaurants and bustling bars beckon. Swim with stingrays (don’t worry, they’re friendly!) in the warm waters off Grand Cayman.

Enjoy fresh seafood and piña colada in the artsy port of Key West , or discover an astonishing variety of marine life as you dive or snorkel the enormous Belize Barrier Reef in Belize City.

Picturesque landscape of St Maarten

Watch: Eastern Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Cruises

If you choose to go east, there’s St. Maarten , divided between France and The Netherlands. Here, you can sunbathe on Orient Beach and take in the restaurants and patisseries of Marigot, the capital of the French side of the island.

In the British Virgin Islands , take a break from lounging on the sand on Tortola and enjoy a rum tasting at a local distillery. Or visit St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, where you can board a catamaran and sail towards the idyllic Honeymoon Beach, regarded as one of the most beautiful in the region.

3: Baja California

Beautiful landscape of Land's End in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Sail south to the sunshine and glittering blue seas around Cabo San Lucas , the glamorous town at the tip of Mexico’s long, thin Baja Peninsula.

There are gorgeous beaches in Cabo to explore, along with dramatic coastal scenery like El Arco, a towering rock arch at Land’s End.

Man on an ATV Ride in Cabo

ATV Ride in Cabo, Mexico

Some of the best things to do in Cabo include heading into the desert on an ATV or admiring the landscape from above on a parasailing trip. You could even spot whales and schools of dolphins from above.

Cabo has a fine culinary scene where you can sample anything from pan-fried lobster to tasty fish tacos, washed down with a margarita.

4: South America

Street view of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you want to explore further south, consider a cruise around South America with stops in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. Here you’ll find summer temperatures, extraordinary scenery, culture, and cuisine, making this one of the best places to cruise in December.

Soak in the sophisticated vibe of Buenos Aires by visiting the city’s museums, taking in a show at the Teatro Colon, or enjoying a dinner featuring Argentina’s world-famous steaks and red wines. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take your partner to a milonga and schedule a tango lesson for two.

Iconic hand sculpture in La Mano in Punta del Este, Uruguay

La Mano in Punta del Este, Uruguay

In Punta Del Este , surf at Playa Brava and enjoy a cocktail at one of the many bars in La Barra neighborhood. Don’t forget to take a photo at La Mano, a massive hand-shaped sculpture that emerges from the sand on the beach.

Beautiful landscape of mountain lake in Ushuaia, Argentina

Ushuaia, Argentina

Adventurers will love Ushuaia , a town at the southern tip of South America that is considered the gateway to both Antarctica and the jagged mountains of Patagonia.

Hike around Tierra del Fuego National Park, where the snow-capped peaks will take your breath away, or hop aboard a catamaran to the Beagle Channel, where you can spot Magellanic penguins and sea lions.

5: The Galapagos

Sea lion enjoying the sun in Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Thanks to its location on the equator, the Galapagos archipelago and its unique flora and fauna can be enjoyed year-round. In December, the cooler season is approaching its end. Sometimes, as cool water and warm air meet, the islands are draped in a light mist, creating an almost mystical feel.

December is the best time to visit the Galapagos to see the endemic plants and animals that inhabit this volcanic archipelago. This being the equator, the sea will be warm enough for swimming, and the sunny days are perfect for hiking and exploring by Zodiac inflatable.

Family looking at Galapagos tortoise

Galapagos tortoise

Spot a wide variety of Galapagos animals , from giant tortoises to land and marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, lava lizards, and Darwin’s finches, named after scientist Charles Darwin, who formulated his theory of evolution by natural selection based on his time here.

December is the last month when you can usually see blue whales, humpback whales, and whale sharks in the Galapagos before they migrate to different feeding grounds, which is another reason to visit then.

6: Southeast Asia

View of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam

Ha Long Bay in Hanoi, Vietnam

December is a great time to take a cruise to Southeast Asia because the humidity of the summer and the monsoon rains have abated, leaving tropical but pleasant temperatures that give you plenty of energy for sightseeing.

A December cruise to Southeast Asia will take you to the best ports in the region. Explore the wonders of Hanoi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and cruise on a traditional junk boat among the limestone rock stacks of Halong Bay.

Gate leading to the Imperial City in Hue, Vietnam

Imperial City in Hue, Vietnam

In the ancient Vietnamese city of Hue, tour the walled Imperial City and Citadel, built over 200 years ago when Hue was the country’s capital.

In the south, cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City shimmers with energy. You’ll find thought-provoking museums, sizzling street food, and serene temples wafting incense, all against a backdrop of futuristic skyscrapers. End your stay with a warm bowl of pho or a full-body massage before returning to the ship.

Exterior of Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

See the landmarks in Bangkok , where there are dazzling floating markets and lavish temples to discover. Explore lush Phuket, where you can shop, sunbathe, or cruise the dramatic karst scenery of Phang Nga Bay. Take in the ultramodern architecture of Singapore and snap pictures of the city’s jaw-dropping giant “trees” at the Gardens By The Bay.

Street view of George Town in Penang, Malaysia

George Town in Penang, Malaysia

Some itineraries visit Malaysia , with a chance to visit mystical, mountainous Langkawi and historic George Town, the capital of Penang. Indonesia is another thrilling destination, and a chance to take in Lombok’s volcanic beauty, where forested slopes give way to dreamy golden beaches.

7: New Zealand

Scenic landscape of Milford Sound, New Zealand

Milford Sound, New Zealand

December is one of the best months of the year to visit New Zealand , when the weather is warm and sunny and locals head to the beaches and out into the lush countryside for hiking and cycling.

The scenery is truly spectacular, especially in Milford, Dusky, and Doubtful Sounds, where mountains and ribbon-like waterfalls plunge straight into the still water.

View of the wines on a Wine tasting in New Zealand

Wine tasting in New Zealand

New Zealand is known for its fantastic food scene, whether you want to taste the famous lamb, learn about artisan coffee, or tour the cellar doors around Hawkes Bay to sample the region’s prized wines.

There’s a lively culture here, with plenty of opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the Māori people, or to explore the Scottish influences around Dunedin. Visit art galleries and museums and take in the otherworldly beauty of “Middle Earth” and the associated famous movie locations.

8: India & Sri Lanka

A selection of spices at a spice market in Goa, India

Spice market in Goa, India

Escape the cold northern winter for the balmy shores around the Indian Ocean, cooled by tropical breezes. You’ll be dazzled by the vibrancy of Goa’s colorful markets, a riot of sounds, sight, and scents.

Elephants in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Try the local food, which blends Indian and Portuguese influences. In Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka , you can learn about Buddhism while admiring shimmering temples. Nearby Hambantota is where you can embark on a safari to the Yala National Park, with a chance of seeing elephants, leopards, and sloth bears.

9: Canary Islands & Morocco

Cable car going up Teide in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Teide in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Basking in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa, the Spanish-owned Canary Islands enjoy year-round sun and make the perfect winter escape. Each island is different, although they’re all volcanic.

In Tenerife , you could take the cable car up Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, and throw a snowball before descending for evening beers on the beach in the sunshine.

Black sand vineyard of La Geria in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

La Geria in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is almost desert-like, with vines and potatoes thriving in the black, volcanic soil, where they’re grown in pits to protect them from the winds that make this such a great spot for wind and kite surfing.

You can also admire the work of Cesar Manrique on Lanzarote. This famous architect created graceful, whitewashed forms that are the perfect contrast to the stark scenery.

Beautiful shades of blue in Chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Discover the ancient culture of Morocco , where the cities bustle with colorful markets, and graceful minarets pierce the sky. Visit Chefchaouen, a town that’s painted entirely in brilliant blue, or shop for colorful ceramics and hand-woven rugs in Tangier.

These cruises also call at ports in Spain , where the North African Moorish culture is still evident, especially in glorious Seville. The city’s historic center is packed with exquisite palaces built by the Moors, and narrow alleys where the sounds of flamenco music are carried on the breeze.

South America: A Tapestry of Urban and Natural Beauty

Key Considerations When Cruising in December

  • Climate Factors Based on Destination: The climate is your compass! December weather varies dramatically across cruise destinations. Opt for the Caribbean, Bahamas, or Southeast Asia for some warm winter sunshine, while regions like Europe offer a genuine winter wonderland, perfect for those craving a white Christmas!
  • Types of Cruises: Whether you’re the whole family decked in reindeer antlers, lovebirds escaping under the mistletoe, or solo adventurers with an appetite for exploration, there’s a ship waiting for you! Most cruise ships during the holiday season are in full holiday spirit, catering to all—think Disney characters for the kids and liquor tastings for adults.
  • Duration of Cruise Options: Quick dash or epic voyage? December cruises range from short 3-day jaunts to extensive journeys lasting weeks. Consider your holiday schedule, and don’t forget to factor in round-trip travel to your port of departure, be it Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale.
  • Budget Considerations: Santa’s not footing the bill, so plan according to your budget! Prices surge during the holidays, but early birds catch the wallet-friendly deals. Factor in onboard expenses, port expenses , and potential surcharges on these floating resorts.
  • Health and Safety Protocols Onboard: Rudolph’s red nose isn’t the only thing glowing this season—health and safety are in the spotlight, too. Major cruise lines have upped their game: enhanced cleaning, improved air filtration, and updated health protocols.

Sailing into the sunset of the year, December cruises unlock a world of diverse adventures, from the sun-kissed beaches of the Bahamas to the pristine ice expanses of Antarctica. Whether you’re unwinding on a serene Asian beach, delving into rich cultural tapestries, or playing with penguins in the polar south, there’s a unique story waiting for you on the high seas.

Destinations

Rivers of europe.

At this time of year, the climate in Europe is hardly what we would call optimal, but this means it is perfect for you to explore the waterways of certain parts and visit Christmas markets along the way on December cruises.

Choose to cruise in December down the Main, Rhine or Danube, and you’ll get to see where the traditions all began. Buy some stunning, handmade souvenirs as the perfect gifts and sample the local mulled wines to warm your soul.

Alternatively, you could cruise Southern France by sailing the Rhone and the Saone and see how the French enjoy their winter months on December cruises. A river cruise is a romantic way of seeing Europe and will give you the perfect opportunity to have some festive fun with a difference.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most sought-after cruise destinations of all thanks to the romance associated with tropical islands dotted across an azure sea, soft reggae beats and the warm and welcoming nature of the locals. Although the recommended season to travel to the Caribbean is November to April, it can be the case that early December cruises are a little cheaper as many people want to stay at home to prepare for the upcoming festive season!

So a cruise in December 2023 or December 2024 will be nothing short of idyllic from a seasonal point of view, and from a price point of view! The climate at this time of year is perfect – slightly cooler, particularly in the north of the region – you won’t be overly warm whilst trying to see the sights. It is also outside of the hurricane season, meaning you are likely to avoid them – a huge bonus – although in the far south, they are somewhat rarer! There will be slightly less rain too so all in all, it’s a really good time for you to travel here.

As the Caribbean has been featuring on the itineraries of ultra-luxury cruise lines for years, there has been an increasing number of itineraries created to journey further and see more of this stunning area. Of course, you can visit the old favourites such as Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua, but if you choose to cruise the Caribbean with Oceania for example, you can take a more in-depth tour. You’ll visit ports such as Terre-de-Haut; this island is the most easterly one in the Îles des Saintes which forms part of the archipelago of Guadeloupe.

You can take a stop at the Cabrits National Park in Dominica too and explore the tropical forest, reefs and wetlands. Sail with Seabourn and enjoy ports such as Port Elizabeth on Bequia, literally meaning ‘island of the cloud’, the largest of the Grenadines.

Known for sailing and towns with waterfront bars, restaurants and shops you can enjoy a glorious day on this beautiful island. And from the largest to the smallest…you will also visit Mayreau Island which is the tiniest of the Grenadines!

Just one and a half square miles, you’ll find no proper roads and very few vehicles. But there are perfect snorkelling spots to enjoy! Or perhaps spend Christmas Eve and Day on board your Azamara ship, cruising the open seas where you’ll be treated to a range of festive events.

All of the ultra-luxury cruise lines specialise in the Caribbean so you can also enjoy fantastic voyages with Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Oceania Cruises, and SeaDream with their December cruises too.

If you’re looking for something a little different for your December cruises in the Caribbean, you’ll also have the opportunity to sail on a yacht-style cruise. SeaDream have a variety of sailings in this part of the world and their ships will have a distinctly intimate feel as well as making you feel more like a true sailor!

Sail from Marigot to Castries or take a Puerto Rican round-trip – you’ll love the feeling of sailing around these beautiful islands all from the luxury of a yacht.

South America

No matter when you travel to this incredible continent, you will simply be blown away and December cruises are no different. And with itineraries labelled with such exciting names as ‘Lands of Fire, Peaks of Ice’ and ‘Southernmost Seafarer’, how can your interest not be piqued?! Several of the ultra-luxury cruise lines excel in this region and with good reason – they take you to see more of the destinations on the list and get you closer to the heart of them.

So take December cruises with Regent, Silversea, Seabourn and Oceania and you won’t be disappointed, we assure you. You will realise how far from home you really are when you start your journey in cities such as Buenos Aires. Reminiscent of a European city, the locals still hold the belief that they are indeed more European than their neighbours and with such stunning Italian and Spanish influence across it, it’s not hard to see why. Sail away from Argentina to the beats of the tango and find yourself in Uruguay and Montevideo, which is the nation’s only major city.

Continue your journey and head to Sea Wolves Island where you’ll see a colony of endangered sea lions and seals and even enjoy a visit to the Falkland Islands to learn more about their rich history. You’ll find a home away from home in Stanley, which has all the charm of a rural English village and see red telephone boxes, shops and even a local pub or two! You’ll continue onwards to the bottom of the earth and arrive in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city in Argentina.

Head to the peaks of Torres del Paine in Punta Arenas and then find yourself in Laguna San Rafael – a simply breath-taking UNESCO World Biosphere reserve. It has a wall of blue ice, towering 200 feet above you that is the world’s lowest-latitude tidewater glacier. Sadly, the glacier is now in retreat and has been since 1960 but until that point, the wilderness had remained largely unchanged. Experience the laid-back local culture of Chilean Puerto Chacabuco, and watch as Patagonian sheets of ice fall into the sea. Look out for Black Necked Swans and the endangered Giant Condor too. End your December cruises in Santiago and you’ll fly home in time for Christmas with the family.

If you fancy something even more involved and immersive, you can even take an expedition cruise to South America in December. Scenic Eclipse will be sailing its waters and heading to South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and even as far as Antarctica so you can experience these amazing places from the comfort of your supremely indulgent discovery yacht. Scenic will ensure you have a once in a lifetime experience with this extraordinary voyage – you’ll be heading there right in the peak of breeding season.

See colonies of King Penguins, walk in Shackleton’s footsteps and explore the quaint streets of the Falkland Islands as well as uncovering the secrets of the Antarctic Peninsula. You’ll gasp at magnificent icescapes and be surrounded by wildlife such as whales, seals, penguins and a huge range of marine birds. It may be a little colder than the UK in December but it will be worth it to see these amazing sights.

South America is a wonderful blend of cultures, scenery, wildlife and diversity and can be enjoyed on many levels. You’ll see more of it on a cruise than by traditional land-based holidays so give yourself an early Christmas present by heading on cruises in December 2023 or December 2024 to this incredible continent.

Ever fancied seeing sunrise on safari? Or journeying from sands to safaris? Now is your chance with one of the ultra-luxury Africa December cruises specialists such as Regent, Oceania or Azamara. If you start in Cape Town, you will be instantly thrust into the cultural melting pot that lends this city its charm. Of course, you’ll see the stunning figure of Table Mountain looming over you but beneath it, you’ll find evidence of the complex history South Africa has been through. Explore the colourful Malay Quarter and see one of the most scenic stretches of road in the world at Chapman’s Peak.

As you journey onwards to Walvis Bay, you’ll find a natural lagoon dusted almost completely pink with the large colony of flamingos. If you choose to head inland you can see the Namib Desert, visit the colonial town of Swakopmund or head to what are said to be the highest dunes in any desert, mountainous and ochre-coloured, in Sossusvlei. December cruises will take you around more of Africa’s stunning ports and cities, including Maputo Mozambique, before you arrive in Richard’s Bay, the gateway to Zululand and the KwaZulu wildlife reserves.

Why Elite Ocean

If you’d like a broader itinerary, you can include the mystical Middle East too on December cruises, by starting your trip in the United Arab Emirates. See the opulence of oil-rich countries that has risen from the ground, with the most decadent hotels in the world and impressive shopping. See the souks and mosques in Muscat and pass by tropical side of India before heading to the Maldivian capital, Male. See yet more castaway islands of the Seychelles and then arrive in Mombasa with its rich and fascinating history.

Zanzibar will provide you with the perfect opportunity to explore the wonderland beneath the ocean waves but don’t neglect to learn a little about the haunting past of slavery. As you continue on to South Africa, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the rich wildlife on safari before ending your trip in incredible Cape Town. Africa is a continent so rich in everything that you simply can’t fail to be disappointed and by going on cruises in December, you’re arriving in the height of their summer so you’ll benefit from the warmest weather too.

Whilst you can see parts of Asia on a cruise that lands in Africa, if you wish to see more of this huge region, then take cruises in December 2023 or December 2024 which are dedicated here. Meander through the Middle East with Oceania where you’ll take in all the modernity of Dubai, see the stunning fjords of Khasab and watch the perhaps even see dolphins playing. Travelling to Oman, you can see the incredible mosques and sultan’s palace and then you’ll cruise the waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Bahrain, Doha, Abu Dhabi with its incredible Sir Bani Yas Island are all on the list too so you can explore this magical part of Asia, seeing more than you thought possible.

But if it’s the Far East you’d prefer to travel to, why not take December cruises with Silversea from Singapore to Hong Kong? The skylines of these stunning places will dazzle you, as will everything else in between. Explore the old versus the new in beguiling Singapore, where you’ll find traditional enclaves in and amongst the high-tech areas. See the colonial heritage mixed within the evidence of strong economic growth, visit the Empress Place Building and enjoy a Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel.

There is Little India, Chinatown and the Arab Quarter to visit and don’t forget the impressive shopping you can also find. Your other ports will include Ho Chi Minh City where you can get an insight into the atrocities of the Vietnam War but beyond that, you’ll see modern exuberance in a distinctly Asian style, not forgetting the French colonial influence. Hue sits in the foothills of the Annamite Mountains and was once Vietnam’s Imperial City. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in time, all of its former glory will be restored.

In Ha Long Bay, you’ll see the limestone tombstones jutting clear out of the water, dotted about the misty lagoons. This majestic UNESCO World Heritage site will imprint on your memory thanks to its unusual beauty. Natural parks offer biodiversity and there is so much to see here it simply must be visited to be believed.

You’ll end your voyage in Hong Kong where you might want to consider extending your stay so you can enjoy as much of it as you possibly can. Outlying islands, a communist regime, former colonial rule, economic prosperity and gleaming skyscrapers; this city of contrasts has it all and more.

Take a grander voyage with December cruises from Seabourn and their 28-day adventure entitled ‘Grand Southeast Asia’ and grand it is! Circle Vietnam and head to the Hundred Islands National Park in the Philippines, you’ll finally end in Singapore.

You’ll see some of the remotest, most exotic and wonderful places on this epic trip which will see you away well into the New Year. And if India is somewhere which has always been on your must-see list, then why not take a journey from Mumbai to Phuket? See Goa, Mangalore, Cochin and even pass by Yangon in Myanmar before arriving in Phuket. This will give you a whole world of diversity and enjoyment.

There really is so much to see on December cruises to Asia, all brought to you by the ultra-luxury cruise lines – from Oceania to Silversea, Seabourn, Regent and Azamara you’ll have an unrivalled experience.

Cruises in December are a fantastic time to visit this part of the world as its climate becomes more temperate and tolerable.

Rivers of Asia

The vastness of this continent must not be underestimated and you will find that one of the ways to get right to the heart of it is with luxury river cruises in December. Sail the Irrawaddy with Scenic and explore Bagan Pakokku, Amarapura, Mandalay and more, all in complete luxury. You’ll see artisans who have perfected their crafts, have the option to take a hot air balloon flight over Bagan or take a tuktuk to a local cheroot factory.

You could also take the opportunity to explore the Mekong in December, where you’ll sail the centre of Vietnam, Cambodia and also head to Bangkok. December cruises along the rivers in Asia are well-timed thanks to the more inviting climate which has less humidity than at other times of the year. December cruises are a chance to visit cultures who won’t even be aware of our festive celebrations and immerse yourself in rich heritage, stunning scenery and diversity across many countries on the same trip.

Australasia & New Zealand

There is no better place to head on December cruises to escape a harsh UK winter. Spending Christmas on the other side of the world is such a fantastic experience; if you’ve never spent Christmas Day in the sunshine then perhaps now is the time on one of the amazing December cruises on offer – and we are pretty sure you might enjoy the change!

The ultra-luxury cruise lines all take great pride in exploring this region well so you find December cruises itineraries from Regent, Silversea, Seabourn, Azamara, Oceania and Ponant all offering you the sort of holidays you don’t know how to choose between. You’ll see Queensland’s Thursday Island, cruise the Coral Sea and start to head south from Cairns to Airlie Beach and then Brisbane. You’ll eventually end in Sydney and whilst you might have already spent a good chunk of December away from home, we’d recommend an extra stay here to really explore it.

If you can stay as long as New Year’s Eve, you could even experience the fireworks over Sydney Harbour – one of the most spectacular sights there is. And let’s not forget, you’ll be half a day ahead of those back home, practically living in the future so you get to ring in the New Year first!

Or what about Bali, the Outback and New Zealand? With this itinerary you’ll get to see even more of the other side of the world, even heading inland to the famous ‘bush’ which many adventures won’t take you on. Again, you’ll see Indonesia but this time you’ll go so far as Melbourne, then Tasmania and onwards to New Zealand. The fjords of Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound will all astound you with their natural beauty and you’ll see a huge amount of the rest of New Zealand too including Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Napier, the Bay of Islands and Auckland.

Travelling so far really needs to be worth your while. The beauty of cruising this region means you get to see far more than you would on any other type of holiday and you can explore all your surroundings from the comfort of your luxurious ship whilst only unpacking once. We can’t recommend a luxury cruise here enough if you’ve always wanted to see the other side of the world.

Transatlantic Cruises

If you’re travelling at Christmastime, you don’t have to stick to the sorts of destinations you often hear about. No, instead, you can take a trip with a difference on December cruises such as a transatlantic expedition with Regent. You’ll be away just before Christmas and will take two weeks cruising from the southern tip of South Africa, Cape Town, up the coast of east Africa and across the breadth of the Atlantic Ocean.

You’ll take a stop in St Helena and see where Napoleon was imprisoned before continuing onwards all the way to Rio de Janeiro. This highly unusual and interesting itinerary will suit those who want to get more out of their December cruises so why not ask us about how we can make it even more special by extending your stay in South America?

Grand Voyages

Of course, there will always be other types of cruises in December you can take and given its such a festive time of year, perhaps you should indulge in something a little more extravagant such as a Grand Voyage? These extended itineraries take you across multiple regions and countries and often see you away from home for several weeks.

There are many December cruises itineraries to explore from Silversea, Seabourn, Azamara and Oceania and will take you to the farthest reaches of the globe such as Africa and the Indian Ocean and even Central America and the Panama Canal. So if you would like something more exciting from December cruises, get in touch with our expert Connoisseurs and they will be able to guide you to exactly the right one to suit your personal requirements.

Festivities on December Cruises

If you are planning on taking a cruise in December 2023 or December 2024, you will need to bear in mind a few things. You will be away either just before Christmas or even over the festive period, so it goes without saying you need to take this into account.

The last thing you want to do is feel as though you are missing out back at home if you are on the other side of the world, trying to have the time of your life! If it is just a one off, the chances are lower, particularly if you have been planning this for some time. And ideally, you will be enjoying your luxury cruise holiday so much with all it has to offer that it simply won’t occur to you to be homesick. But just make sure you are prepared! The elite ocean cruise lines, as well as the yacht-style and expedition ones will all ensure that they do what they can to make it a fun celebration on board.

But it is important to remember you are there to see the destinations so if you are docked in a port on Christmas Day, you might not have a day of excitement on the ship as it will be presumed you are ashore. There will of course be some festive celebrations in the evening after your return but don’t be disappointed in the day!

December can be a fantastic time to travel if you aren’t a huge lover of all the hype of Christmas throughout the month and if you want to escape to some warmer climes. So if you are considering it, we recommend you take the plunge – give us a call and we will discuss all the options to set your wanderlust alight.

FAQs about cruises in December

Your world cruise frequently asked questions answered..., why should i cruise in december.

Firstly, it’s a great time to get away from the freezing cold of back home and enjoy the balmier temperatures of the more tropical parts of the world. You can escape the madness of a lot of Christmas overkill (as long as you have sorted your present buying and any other planning in advance, that is) and you will be able to revel in your holiday alone. December cruises happen to be the perfect time of year to travel to many of the exotic places too, so you’ll see them at their absolute best. It’s also an opportunity to travel further than you might do in the summer months.

Can I sail close to home in December?

We understand that you might not want to go too far in order to ensure you are still close to family at this important time of year. There are some river cruises which will take you to the Christmas markets, and some which will provide that glimpse of winter sun in the Canary Islands, but other than that the conditions simply aren’t as preferable near to home so it is best to travel further afield to the likes of Asia or the Caribbean.

What type of cruise can I take in December?

If you pick your destination wisely, you can pick all types of cruises in December, from elite ocean to luxury river, yacht-style and expedition too. It is true that you won’t have the breadth of possibility to explore everywhere, but the destinations on offer on December cruises will more than satisfy your desire to travel.

When is best to book a December cruise?

ASAP! With cruising, particularly luxury cruising, you pretty much always find that you’ll secure the best price and benefits (not to mention the itinerary and suite of your choice) when you book it sooner rather than later. These cruises are not subject to as much fluctuation as other types of holiday and you may find flights can be cheaper the earlier you book, especially when travelling long haul. With smaller ships, plus the fact that there are fewer cruises to choose

Panache Cruises' Words of Wisdom

It may sound odd but December is peak season for certain regions (such as Australia and New Zealand, and even the Caribbean) so you will find flights are not at their lowest. Speak to us about optimal times to book and we will be well-placed to advise you on all things flight-related.

Back at home it will be freezing and damp but when you’re on a cruise at this time of year, the chances are you’ll be heading somewhere much warmer. Unless you choose an expedition to Antarctica of course! But don’t forget to plan for where it is you are going…and take something warm in your hand luggage for your return to Blighty!

As with any time of year, you will be exposed to the most stunning local and indigenous species and scenery so you need to ensure you treat them with respect to ensure their preservation. Take pictures, but nothing more so that other visitors can still enjoy them in years to come.

With a voyage so far away from home, you are bound to meet people from cultures that are wildly different to yours, many of whom might have a different religion and as such won’t even realise that we are in the midst of our festive period! Treat them all with the respect you would hope for and ideally, you will receive it.

If you’re heading away in December, why not make your trip even more special with a private tour, helicopter excursion or even a trip on a submarine? You could treat it as an extra Christmas present for yourself which we will be happy to arrange for you.

Let’s be honest, unless you are doing something Christmas-centric, it will be wisest to head as far away from the British climate as you can get in December! Take the chance to visit the other side of the world and you will be nothing but delighted and excited by every port you stop at.
