For wildlife enthusiasts, families and travelers alike, this Sharjah wildlife centre should top the list of places to visit in Sharjah. Inside, you will find four major venues. Arabia’s Wildlife Centre houses the Arabian leopard, the oryx and other rare animals for up close viewing. We were visiting Sharjah for the first time, and the evening safari was something we had been looking forward to. Dubai Adventures deserves credit for making our trip pleasurable and unforgettable. We greatly enjoyed the entire desert journey, including the concerts, cuisine, and sleeping in tents. The tour guides were friendly and accommodating.

Our hotel was City Max Hotel in Sharjah, and it took about half an hour to reach the Lahbab desert. Several Land cruisers before entering the desert deflate there tires and give travelers the chance to walk around. Little souvenir shops are present over there. Then the celebration begins – our safari driver stimulated the volume of music in the car and we headed for the setting sun in deep horizons of Sharjah desert. Actually! The sand dunes are huge enough to give us thrills when the car touches impossible angles and rushes down the dunes. We had a little opportunity to watch the sunset, with excellent photography landscape (this is a reason why they recommends bringing cameras with you). A short camel ride ends up to the Arabian Bedouin style camp where we spent the rest of evening. A hot cup of coffee and snacks are offered on the main entrance of the camp, and you are free to walk around the camp with many small shops, take a short horse ride and get a henna tattoo. The safari camp is decorated nicely with covered and open-air sitting area, the dining area, and various gift shops; with the live dancing stage and seating in the center. It can be very cool at winter nights, so take extra layers of clothing. The live BBQ food cooking with bonfire is surprisingly great, and the dishes are served between shows, but it may take some time for the queue to finish on buffets. Both ladies and gents toilet was clean enough and exceed expectations as you are in the middle of the desert. Sharjah Safari is home to over 1,000 animals and birds across a range of 120 species, including lions, gazelles, elephants, crocodiles and many rare African animals. Particular highlights include the extremely rare black rhino, and Wuhaida, a female southern white rhino born at the park.

Aside from the truly amazing array of wildlife, there are also over 1,000 native and African trees planted on the land, including beautiful Samar trees, and the iconic Acacia tortilis – famous for it’s striking umbrella-like shape. The majestic landscape of the park, which covers an astonishing eight square kilometres, really is a sight to behold.

REGIONS IN THE PARK

There are 12 environments in the park to explore, each depicting a distinct African location and the lives of the native animals and birds. Here are some highlights of the various areas in Sharjah Safari Park Al Dhaid:

The first component of the park’s walking tour allows visitors to experience an eclectic array of African birds as they stroll down Baobab Avenue.
The next stop is the vibrant Zanzibar village, where guests can tuck into tasty eats in an authentic African setting before embarking on their wild safari.

Sharjah Safari welcomes 2nd birth of an African savanna elephant

Sharjah: The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah announced the birth of the elephant "Tarthooth", named after a wild plant that emerges with the rainfall. It has become the second African savannah elephant to be welcomed by the Sharjah Safari project, the largest of its kind in the world outside of Africa.

The newborn joins the African savanna elephant (Samra), who was born at the beginning of last year, and becomes part of the project's African elephant group.

Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, stated that the EPAA continues to enhance its leading position locally, regionally, and internationally in efforts to preserve biodiversity and protect and increase rare and endangered African species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.

She highlighted that with the recording of the second birth of an African savannah elephant, Sharjah Safari aims to consolidate its qualitative successes in breeding and adding many animals in various environments of its sections, which vary between birds, reptiles, mammals, among others. This includes the elephants, in addition to the births of African giraffes, the Scimitar oryx, and breeding the rare Madagascar Paratilapia fish.

Largest land animals

Al Suwaidi added that African savanna elephants are considered the largest land animals in the world, with their numbers continuously decreasing. They have large ears filled with blood vessels that help dispel excess heat. Compared to forest elephants, savanna elephants are distinguished by their larger size, ranging from 4 to 5 metres in height and weighing between 4 and 7 tonnes. They have notably outward-curving tusks and are predominantly found in the southern plains of the Sahara desert in Africa. They live in savanna regions, have a lifespan of up to 50 years, a gestation period of 22 months, consume up to 150 kg of food daily, and differ from African forest elephants, which are smaller, have almost straight tusks, and inhabit the forests of central and West Africa.

It is worth mentioning that Sharjah Safari is a vital, distinctive project. Since its inauguration in 2022 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, it has enhanced the economic, touristic, and environmental status of Sharjah, making it the premier destination for lovers of the environment, nature, and wildlife.

The project encompasses 12 different environments inspired by various regions across Africa, covering an area of 8 square kilometres, representing the wildlife and terrain and simulating the actual areas in the African continent.

F or brothers Affan Tanvir and Suleiman Tanvir, engaging in rescue missions is nothing new. They have been carrying out rescue operations for the last four years, drawing on their extensive experience in saving people from desert terrain. When the on April 16, they immediately put their skills to use.

Their recent mission started at 8am on April 16, while they were on their way to Dubai Airport to pick up friends whose flight had been cancelled. “It rained a bit at night and in the morning, and the roads were water-logged in many areas on April 16. As we were travelling, we rescued many cars, trucks, and minivans from the waterlogged roads. However, submerged routes prevented us from reaching the airport, prompting us to redirect our efforts to assist those in need,” said Affan.

All this they could undertake is because of their loyal companion — their off-roading SUV, a modified Nissan Patrol Safari that has been enabling them to undertake various challenging tasks. “Our vehicle is tuned and modified to tackle diverse challenges. Its power and modified ground clearance allow it to navigate through waters and rescue people,” said Affan.

During their journey back from the airport, they encountered many motorists unsure how to retrieve their vehicles from the water. “We pulled their vehicles out without starting their engines. Once they were on safer ground, they could drive away. A few vehicles didn't start,” said Affan.

After working until noon on April 16, they took a brief rest before resuming their rescue missions in the evening. “As the heavy rainfall continued on April 16, we received hundreds of calls for rescuing people stranded in villas and cars on waterlogged streets,” said Affan.

Their most challenging missions unfolded on the evening of April 16, extending into the next morning without pause. “Many had been at offices on April 16, and upon returning, they found their cars and minivans stuck on waterlogged streets,” said Affan.

“Numerous individuals were hesitant to leave their vehicles, so we approached them and escorted them to safety. We even extracted vehicles from the water on the same day,” added Affan.

Residents of the Al Hoshi neighbourhood in Sharjah and owners of Front Line Group, the brothers, along with their company employees, got into action again on April 17 after 4 pm, responding to calls to rescue people and stranded vehicles. Over four days, they worked tirelessly, accumulating over 50 hours of rescue efforts.

“We rescued over 200 people from homes and roads, and we pulled out more than 80 cars, along with many minivans and buses,” said Affan.

They frequently receive calls from locals in Ras Al Khaimah reporting individuals stuck in the desert as it is only a 50-minute drive from their residence. "We get a lot of calls to rescue people struck in the desert. Whenever we want to go off-roading or on a desert drive, we primarily focus on the Ras Al Khaimah desert, where many vehicles get stuck, so that we can help them,” said Affan.

Their determination and skills have garnered recognition from law enforcement. “A few policemen in Sharjah have requested our contact information for future missions. We feel really proud and blessed to live in the UAE,” added Affan.
