2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

dp world tour dates

The 2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are related to the strategic alliance between DP World Tour and the European Tour that was announced in November 2021, changing the name of the tour and raising the minimum value of purses to $2 million.

European Tour co-sanctioned, purse-boosted events

The two tours are co-sanctioning three events on their schedules, including the European Tour's Scottish Open, which has a new sponsor in Genesis, as well the Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour). The fields in all three events will feature a split of player availability between DP World Tour (European Tour) and European Tour pros, including spots for 50 European Tour players in the Barbasol and Barracuda Championships, which will be played opposite the Scottish Open and Irish Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open will remain part of the European Tour's Rolex Series. The Irish Open, which will not be co-sanctioned in 2022, will have a purse boosted by the DP World Tour (European Tour) to $6 million -- nearly double the amount offered this year.

There are a variety of new events on the schedule this year, including the Ras al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, the Pecanwood Classic and Steyn City Championship in South Africa, the Soudal Open in Belgium, two new events in Asia (including one in Japan) and the return of the Cyprus Open.

World Golf Championships halved

Since 2009, there have been four World Golf Championships events on the schedule. However, there are just two on the 2022 schedule: the WGC-HSBC Champions in China from Oct. 28-31 and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas from March 23-27.

With the Memphis-based event becoming a playoff event, the other change is the WGC-Mexico Championship dropping out of the series. A Mexico Championship is listed on the schedule as a full-field event.

2022 DP World Tour Schedule

In what is a major rebrand, the European Tour is set to become the DP World Tour when the 2022 season kicks off.

Ahead of what will be the 50th anniversary of Europe's premier circuit, it was announced that DP World had agreed a deal for the tour's naming rights, with a major cash injection to take prize money past the $200 million mark for the first time.

As part of the agreement, there will also be a minimum prize fund of $2m per tournament, sanctioned solely by the DP World Tour.

The aptly named circuit will travel to 27 countries and feature new events in Belgium, Japan, South Africa and the UAE. Of the 47 tournaments, 23 will be held in Europe, with the remaining 24 classified as worldwide events.

Five tournaments will make up the lucrative Rolex Series - the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship, and the DP World Tour Championship - with each boasting a purse of $8m.

DP WORLD TOUR SCHEDULE

New look DP World Tour schedule is 13 months long, features 44 events in 24 countries with record prize money

1355069844

Stuart Franklin

Delayed by the June declaration that the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund are discussing the possibility of joining forces, the DP World Tour has belatedly announced its 13-month long 2023-24 schedule. In all, the former European Tour will be made up of 44 events in 24 countries across five continents, underlining the Old World circuit’s long-held claim to be golf’s most international tour. In all, players will be competing for a record prize fund of $148.5 million, which does not include the purses from the four major championships.

Those bland figures only disguise some sweeping internal changes, however. Between November 2023 and August 2024, the Race to Dubai will feature five Global Swings followed by a month-long Back 9 in September and October before two DP World Tour playoff events in November. What will not change is the presence of five Rolex Series events—January’s Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open in July, September’s BMW PGA Championship and, both in November, the Abu Dhabi Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. ( Click here to view full schedule.)

The five Global Swings each have their own title and share of the season.

The Opening Swing will take up November and December this year and comprise six tournaments (including three national championships), starting with the Australian PGA Championship and ending with the Mauritius Open.

After the Christmas and New Year holidays, the seven-event International Swing will begin with a new tournament, the Dubai Invitational and continue through the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa in early March.

The Singapore Classic is the first of seven events in the Asian Swing that, somehow, includes both the Masters and the PGA Championship.

The European Swing begins with the Soul Open in Belgium in late May and concludes with the BMW International Open in early July. Again illogically, the U.S. Open is part of this phase.

One week before the Open Championship at Royal Troon, the Genesis Scottish Open kicks off the Closing Swing that runs through the Danish Golf Championship in late August.

RELATED: Lee Westwood, Eddie Pepperell get into testy Twitter spat

Points accrued in the major championships will count on the Race to Dubai but not in the Swing Rankings that will each pay $200,000 to their own champions. At the conclusion of the Global Swings phase, a further $1 million bonus pool will then be shared amongst the leading 10 players on the Race to Dubai (who have played a minimum of eight regular Global Swing events outside the major championships and Genesis Scottish Open).

The five different swings will also offer qualification into the first three Rolex Series events.

The leading member (not otherwise exempt) from the Opening Swing will qualify for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. The leading member (not otherwise exempt) from each of the International Swing, Asian Swing and European Swing will qualify for the Genesis Scottish Open. And the leading member (not otherwise exempt) from the Closing Swing will qualify for the tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

At the end of all of the above, the tour will move into Phase Two, the Back 9 which will begin with the Betfred British Masters and end with a late-October tournament still to be confirmed. In addition to exempt DP World Tour members, the leading 15 non-members from the top 70 on the FedEx Cup will be eligible to play in these events and qualify for the DP World Tour Championship. And the top 110 players on the Race to Dubai Rankings at the conclusion of this phase in October will earn their DP World Tour cards for 2025 while the top 70 qualify for Phase Three, the DP World Tour Playoffs.

That third and final phase will comprise the two final Rolex Series events of the season: the Abu Dhabi Championship and DP World Tour Championship. At its conclusion, the leading 10 players on the Race to Dubai will share a $6 million bonus pool.

Amidst this plethora of changes and restructuring, one exemption will remain in place and couple of others will be added.

As is the case at the end of the current 2023 season, the top 10 DP World Tour members on the final 2024 Race to Dubai Rankings (not otherwise exempt) will earn PGA Tour cards for the 2025 season.

The leading DP World Tour member who earns the first of the 10 PGA Tour exemptions for 2024 via the current 2023 Race to Dubai Rankings, will also be exempt into the Players Championship and the Charles Schwab Challenge in 2025.

And finally, the leading finisher from the current 2023 Race to Dubai, not otherwise exempt through the top 50 of the 2022-23 FedEx Cup standings, will earn a spot into two PGA Tour signature events in 2024: the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

DP World Tour unveils 2024 schedule; 44 events to be contested across the world

DP World Tour, Genesis Scottish Open

One week after the PGA Tour released its 2024 schedule, the DP World Tour unveiled theirs Monday.

Formerly known as the European Tour, the DP World Tour will stage 44 events in 24 countries across five continents in 2024.

Five different ‘swings’ also encompass the schedule, all of which occur before August 2024.

The final stretch of the season, dubbed the ‘Back 9’ by the DP World Tour, begins in September 2024, after the conclusion of the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGA Tour.

The ‘Back 9’ feature greater purses and increased Race to Dubai ranking points.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DP World Tour (@dpworldtour)

The first six DP World Tour events, including the Australian Open , comprise the ‘Opening Swing.’ These events begin Nov. 23 and run through Dec. 17, with the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open concluding the first swing.

Events in South Africa and Australia will run concurrently over the first two weeks.

After the calendar flips to 2024, the DP World Tour heads to the Middle East.

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the first of five Rolex Series events, highlights the ‘International Swing’ in mid-January.

The Rolex Series events in 2024 are the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open in July, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September, and the final events of the DP World Tour schedule in November: the Abu Dhabi Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

dp world tour dates

The ‘International Swing’ includes a trip to Bahrain for the Bahrain Championship, the first time the DP World Tour will stage an event there since 2011.

Once The Masters kicks off in April, the DP World Tour will be in the middle of its ‘Asian Swing,’ which features events in Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and China for the first time since 2019.

After the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, the tour begins its ‘European Swing,’ which will start in Belgium for the Soudal Open.

The European Open in Hamburg and the Volvo Car Scandanavian Mixed hosted by Annika Sorenstam in Sweden—one of the most unique events in professional golf—follow the Soudal Open.

These two events will be contested next June, in the weeks leading up to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Stops in the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany for the BMW International Open then follow the third major of the year.

Rory McIlroy, PGA Tour, DP World Tour, Genesis Scottish Open

The Genesis Scottish Open, held the week before The Open Championship in July, begins the ‘Closing Swing.’

The DP World Tour then takes two weeks off following the season’s final major for the 2024 Summer Olympics, which will be held in Paris.

Le Golf National, host of the 2018 Ryder Cup , will stage the Olympic competition.

The tour starts back up with the Czech Masters and the Danish Golf Championship, thus concluding the ‘Closing Swing’ at the end of August.

Then, the ‘Back 9’ begins.

The DP World Tour saved its most notable—and perhaps most recognizable—tournaments for the ‘Back 9.’

The tour did this by design: they want the best European players in the world to fly across the Atlantic following the Tour Championship, which concludes on Sept. 1, 2024.

Yet, the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo will run the same weekend as the Tour Championship. The Belfry in England hosts this prestigious event every year.

Despite the scheduling conflict, only 30 players will tee it up at the Tour Championship. So it is very likely that Faldo’s British Masters will feature a top-notch, world-class field.

The ‘Back 9’ then heads to Switzerland for the Omega European Masters in Switzerland Sept. 5-8.

The following week, the Irish Open will be held at one of the best golf courses in the world, Royal County Down Golf Club in Northern Ireland.

The focus of the golfing world will continue to be in the British Isles as the tour shifts to Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship, scheduled for Sept. 19-22, 2024.

Shane Lowry, PGA Tour, DP World Tour, BMW PGA Championship

Five more events follow the DP World Tour’s flagship tournament at Wentworth: the Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid; the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews—a fan favorite; the French Open; and the Andalucia Masters.

Another to-be-announced event will be held Oct. 24-27.

The DP World Tour season concludes with two playoff events, with only the top 70 players in the Race to Dubai standings advancing to the Abu Dhabi Championship Nov. 7-10.

From there, the top 50 finishers head to Dubai for the DP World Championship on Nov. 14-17, 2024.

Next year’s schedule for the DP World Tour is a great one. Some of the best players in the world will play all over the globe, genuinely encompassing the meaning of a world tour.

How the DP World Tour looks beyond 2024 remains to be seen, especially with its pending agreement with the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF).
