Why Go See the DC Monuments at Night? That Can’t Be Safe…

Your first visit to DC can be overwhelming. There’s a lot to see in the US capital city. The National Mall will seem like it’s nothing but museums and monuments. (That’s basically true and sort of the purpose of the National Mall.)

Everywhere you turn, there’s another monument.

Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson.

Vietnam, Korea, World War II.

And every tourist has to see them all . (Me included! No shame.)

What this means is large groups of people all competing for the perfect picture of all of these amazing monuments and memorials. It can be extremely difficult to get a good shot without other people in it. For some of us, that’s super frustrating.

Minimize the Crowds in Your Photos

What many people miss out on is visiting at night! The museums close early and most of the tourist hordes disappear, to their hotels or restaurants or perhaps a ball game. This leaves the monuments with less people to contend with (compared to daylight hours) to get your perfect photo.

The secret to perfect travel photos without other people in them: go obscenely early or late in the day.

In this case, catch the lull between day trippers and night tours and get some sneaky and beautiful blue hour photographs. If you just can’t handle a late dinner, then eat around 5PM or 6PM and go to the monuments later.

Most night tours are between 6PM and 9PM, give or take an hour depending on time of year. Generally, if you show up at 8PM and stick around for a few hours , you’ll have the monuments relatively to yourself by the end of the evening.

The night tour buses will bring in waves of crowds that will all snap their pictures and be gone in 15 minutes and on to their next stop. Wait out these crowds.

Be Smart. Be Safe.

Note that while there will be less people out you will by no means be alone (unless it’s cold or very, very late/early). The National Mall area is well-patrolled and there’s always at least one or two security officers per monument.

When visiting the Tidal Basin area, lighting along the waterfront is ok but not great . The memorials are all well-lit but the paths between are not as heavily travelled as the National Mall paths.

Use caution and common sense when walking in the dark. Bring a flashlight and walk with purpose, not like you’re lost. Explore with a group (the more people, the better). Stay sober and alert. Be smart, and you’ll be fine.

If at any time you feel uncomfortable, just leave.

Which DC Monuments are Lit Up at Night?

Not every tour goes to all of these monuments, but these are the most popular. Starting at the east end of the National Mall and then rotating counterclockwise:

  • The US Capitol

The White House

Washington monument, world war ii memorial.

  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Vietnam Wall)

Lincoln Memorial

Korean war veterans memorial, martin luther king jr memorial, franklin delano roosevelt memorial, thomas jefferson memorial, us marine corps war memorial (iwo jima memorial).

Jefferson and Washington Monuments at night, with scaffolding covering the Jefferson Memorial dome

US Capitol Building

A working monument, if you will, and instantly recognizable . Not all tours actually get out here, but many buses drive by slow enough you could snap a quick pic.

Can’t get too close, but views from both sides of America’s Executive Mansion are pretty awesome. Know that you are being carefully watched by the Secret Service, even if you can’t see them, so don’t try to sneak closer for a better view.

I got called out by an officer for walking on the grass (still behind all barriers, mind you) rather than the sidewalk a few feet further away. Guess that makes me a rebel.

Obelisks are cool. This one is so tall that it can be seen from both ends of the Mall and from the Tidal Basin. Capture some sweet reflections in either the Tidal Basin or the Reflecting Pool.

Tall white obelisk of the Washington Monument against a dark night sky

Beautiful fountain during the day and gorgeously lit up at night, this is one of my favorite monuments at night.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

The Vietnam Wall is not brightly lit, but it’s worth a stop if you have the time. This is a good location for blue hour photography, right after the sun sets or right before the sun rises.

A stunning monument, day or night. Lincoln caps off the western end of the National Mall, so you also get great views of the rest of the Mall from his front steps.

This memorial seems like it was made for viewing at night! The solider statues are spaced out and among the trees and really brings out the constant, unsettling vigilance you see in each statue’s face.

Chiseled out of the rock, peering out over the tidal basin, Dr. King has even more gravitas at night . This memorial also has its own gift shop across the road, so it’s worth a visit both day and night.

Metal statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt seated in wheelchair as seen at night

There are several statues to see here, but these are not all lit up as much as the other memorials. Go early in the evening, sunset or shortly after, to see everything. The fountain is still worth a visit in the dark.

There are so many great locations to get phenomenal photos of this memorial! Visit the memorial itself to see Mr. Jefferson in person, but then walk along the waterfront for unique views from every angle.

Snap a shot with the Washington Monument photobombing in the background. Get a reflection in the water. Get a shot of both TJ and MLK Memorials. The possibilities are endless.

Brilliantly lit and surrounded by inky black evening, this memorial makes a statement at night. Off by itself, across the river from the rest of the National Mall, this monument is by Arlington Cemetery. I honestly preferred it at night rather than during the day.

Is a DC Monuments at Night Tour Worth It?

Absolutely , especially if your goal is to see it all in one evening.

Even if you’ve got more time, a tour is a great way to scope out all the monuments and pick ones you want to return to the following evening when you have more time or when the weather is more cooperative.

What’s the Downside of a Tour?

Tours can get expensive for big groups, and they frequently sell out well in advance of popular holidays or peak tourist season. With proper planning, you’ll get a ticket but not much you can do about the price.

Tours also put you on a clock. For example, you’ll get 30 minutes or so to see the Lincoln and Korean War and Vietnam Veterans Memorials in all their nighttime awesomeness before you have to be back on the bus and heading for the next monument. That’s only 10 minutes per monument ; you better walk fast.

How Much Does a Tour Cost? How Long Do Tours Last?

Prices vary by company. In general, bus tours are 2-3 hours long and run $45 per adult. Here are some popular night tour options:

  • Old Town Trolley Monuments by Moonlight Tour : rolled down windows for exploring in the rain or rolled up for clear nights
  • Big Bus Night Tour : open top buses, great on clear nights
  • USA Guided Tours DC at Dusk Tour : a bit pricier but nicer buses and a longer tour

Bike tours , Segway tours, and guided walking tours are all options as well.

Is there a Free Monuments at Night Tour?

Sure! Create your own free DC monuments at night tour!

Remember, you’re paying for the transportation and the guide on the tours. All the monuments are public access and free to enter. No lines to wait in, either.

The biggest downside to the DIY free option is transportation. Many, but not all, monuments are within reasonable walking distance of each other. But even seasoned pros can get tired of walking circles around the National Mall all day.

Some memorials, like the Iwo Jima/Marine Corps War Memorial, are off by themselves. You have to drive and find a place to park, or hire a taxi and ask them to wait while you take photos.

Suggested Routes for DIY Free DC Monuments at Night Tour

White marble Lincoln Memorial brilliantly lit up against a black night sky

Route #1: West End of the National Mall

  • Start at the Washington Monument .
  • Walk towards the Lincoln Memorial to find the World War II Memorial at the base of the Reflecting Pool.
  • Next, it’s a little tricky to get to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the dark if you don’t know where you’re going but we can do this! Google Maps can bail you out if you get lost.
  • Walk counterclockwise (to the right as you’re looking at the Lincoln Memorial) around the Reflecting Pool. Choose the path further to the right in the trees rather than the path right next to the Reflecting Pool.
  • About halfway to the Lincoln Memorial, there will be a path on the right with a marker pointing you to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (You’ll also pass public restrooms if you need them.) Follow the marker and turn left at the end of this path.
  • Stay to the right and continue to follow signs. You will finally end up at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial .
  • Continue to the Lincoln Memorial .
  • Exiting the Lincoln Memorial, turn right (opposite direction you came from the Vietnam Memorial) towards the Korean War Veterans Memorial .

Optional Add-On: MLK Memorial

The Martin Luther King Jr Memorial is on the tidal basin but within a reasonable walking distance from the Korean War Memorial, if your legs are feeling good and you’re up for extending your tour.

  • Leaving the Korean War Memorial, walk south (away from Lincoln) towards Independence Avenue.
  • Stay on the sidewalk on this side of the street and turn left to continue along the road until you come to the pedestrian signal to cross Independence Ave. (Note: this walk is equal to about half the length of the Reflecting Pool and is not short.)
  • There is a marker to guide you at the intersection, and you’ll see the lights across the street from the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial .

If you’d rather do the Tidal Basin another night on its own, here is one recommended route. You can really start at any of the three monuments; just depends where you park or ask Uber/Lyft to drop you off.

Black and white photograph of the Washington Monument at night reflected in the Tidal Basin waters

Route #2: The Tidal Basin

  • The Martin Luther King Jr Memorial is on the northwest corner of the tidal basin and has its own gift shop. Several hop on/hop off day bus tours drop off here, so make it your last stop of the day bus tour and start your DIY night tour here.
  • The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is a short distance south (along the tidal basin waterfront or the road, whichever you prefer) from the MLK Memorial. Arrive around sunset to see all the statues here, or make a beeline for the fountain if it’s already dark.
  • Continue around the tidal basin waterfront path to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial . Fair warning: this is not a short walk. I’m sure your Uber driver won’t judge if you get picked up at the FDR Memorial and dropped off at the TJ Memorial.

Add-on: Monuments on Their Own

  • The Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) is across the Potomac River and by Arlington National Cemetery. Driving is really the only way to get here.
  • The US Capitol Building is beautiful at night. This is the far east end of the National Mall, so you could walk here from the Washington Monument. The Mall is deceiving in its size, so you might find your feet are unhappy by the time you finish your trek.
  • The White House is also beautiful at night. Harder to get pictures of because they won’t let you close to the fence. Forget about finding a place to park near here. Walk or taxi.

Last Minute Advice for Visiting DC’s Monuments at Night

  • Camera tripods are allowed everywhere on the National Mall except inside the Lincoln or Jefferson Memorials or on US Capitol grounds.
  • You need a permit to use a tripod on Capitol grounds . Yes, a security officer will show up and ask to see your permit.
  • Bring some snacks and water if walking , especially if travelling from end to end. The National Mall is a 4-mile loop, round trip.
  • If you’re not tired after your bus tour, walk or drive back to your favorite monument and get better pictures with less people.

Washington DC Monuments At Night (Best DC Monuments At Night Tours!)

Are you planning a Washington DC trip and thinking about visiting the DC monuments at night? Imagine the Lincoln Memorial at night all lit up!  I bet you want to find the best night tours in Washington DC.

Awesome! There are a lot of great options to see the DC monuments at night. Touring the National Mall at night will help you beat the heat of the summer (if you go during summer!) and also the crowds will be so much lower all year round!

If you have been following along on my blog you will know that I am based in Utah. One exciting thing you may not know is that I lived just outside of Washington DC and was able to explore a lot of the East Coast during our time there.

I love Washington DC and all of the East Coast historical sites.  I wish I could have lived there longer!

In this post, we are going to go over why it is awesome to visit the DC monuments at night, answer a few questions you might have visiting DC by night, and give you a plan of attack with the option of booking a DC night tour.

Let's plan everything you need to know when visiting the DC monuments at night!

Why Visit the DC Monuments at Night?

Okay, truth be told is that on a trip to DC last year, my husband visited the monuments at night because he was in meetings during the day. So, yes, one reason is that it's the only time you have time.

But hopefully, that's not the situation, in which case, here are the five reasons to why touring Washington DC at night is awesome.

1. Washington DC Monuments are Open at Night

They're open. There is not a lot open in the evening in DC. The museums close early. But the monuments are always accessible.

2. The Blazing Sun is Down

You don't have to mess with the sun. Summer and DC when mixed together are ingredients for heat. For the most part, you are outside if you are visiting the monuments. By going at night, you can enjoy the monuments without battling the summer heat.

3. Less Crowds

Another reason is there are fewer crowds. You won't be completely alone in most places. You will still see tour buses late at night. Sometimes you won't see the buses, but all of a sudden see a swarm of people with lanyards and know tour or convention buses are still making the rounds.

You will also likely come across families and friends on rental bikes or scooters getting around Washington DC .  But there won't be many. And with few people out and about, you will have plenty of space to roam around.

And if you happen to be a runner, and my husband and I are, avoiding the heat and having space is a recipe for a great, scenic run.

4. Monuments at Night are Lit Up

See the lights. The monuments are lit up at night, accentuating their majestic structures.

5. Peaceful

It's peaceful. With fewer cars and fewer people, it is noticeably more quiet. It is a great way to quietly take in each monument and ponder on their messages.

Transportation to the Washington DC Monuments

Take the Orange, Silver, or Blue Line to the Smithsonian stop.  The Smithsonian stop is where you will want to exit to start your monument at night tour.

There is a small free parking lot by the Washington Memorial that I used to park at all the time.  However, if spots are taken you can usually find a spot along the Mall.  These spots do cost money.  If you park at night, you should have better luck than finding a spot earlier in the day.

How Much Time Do I Need to See the Monuments at Night?

The National Mall is about a 5-mile round trip.  You can try to hit as many monuments and memorials as you can but it can take hours, so you may want to pick and choose the ones that are most important to you.

How Much Time Do I Need to See Washington DC at Night?

Obviously, you are not going to be speed walking you will want to enjoy each monument and read the inscriptions and take pictures at each one.  I would give yourself about 3 hours to tour around some of the top monuments and memorials on foot.

If you decide to rent a bike or take a moonlight trolley ride , you will be able to cut your time in half.

Things to Know Before Exploring the Washington Monuments at Night

The monuments are run by the National Park Service.

Do the Monuments in DC Close? Can you See the Monuments at Night?

The monuments are open 24 hours a day.  there are park rangers available from 9:30 am – 11:30 pm daily., is it safe to walk around the national mall at night.

Yes, but with caution. DC at night is amazing, however, there are a lot of homeless people in DC.  I think you are safe if you are in a group or near big groups.  If you are concerned about safety book a tour!

Restroom Facilities

Restrooms are located at the Lincoln Memorial, the FDR Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial.  There is another restroom as you are walking along the path.

Where Do You Park to See the Monuments at Night in DC?

The good thing about DC at night is the crowds are lower making the parking spaces more available.  Parking is strictly enforced.  So please pay attention to the signs. There is also a free parking lot near the Washinton Monument.

Plan of Attack for Viewing the DC Washington Monuments at Night!

Make your plan of attack for viewing and walking DC monuments at night.  You will want to have a plan on which monuments you want to see first and which ones are the most important to you.

This is a plan for the best route to see Washington DC Monuments at night. This is a self-guided walking tour of the best monuments to see in DC at night. We will list all of the group DC tours a little later.

Washington DC at Night Map

This DC monuments at night maps will give you an idea of where everything is located.

1. Washington Monument at Night

The National Mall stretches from the United States Capitol to the east, to the Lincoln Memorial to the west. From the Smithsonian Station, it is about half of a mile to the Washington Memorial (to the west of the station).

Is the Washington Monument lit up at Night?

Yes, It is so beautiful! You can see it for miles!

2. Word War II Memorial at Night

From there, your next step will be likely the World War II Memorial, about a third of a mile to the west of the Washington Memorial. I really enjoyed the World War II Memorial and spent quite some time there before moving on.

The World War II Memorial is made up of two semicircles, with two arches commemorating the two theaters of the war: the Pacific and the Atlantic. Pillars line the semicircles, each with a name of one of the fifty states.

3. Lincoln Memorial at Night

From the World War II Memorial, you will have about a half-mile to the Lincoln Memorial.

Word of Caution

A word of caution here. I would recommend walking along the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool that runs between the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II Memorial. It can be quite easy to follow a path that veers to the north.

I have found going toward the Constitution Gardens to the north is intimidating. There appear to be fewer people at night, the lighting is very poor, and you may see the occasional bench sleeper. It is not the best path to see the Lincoln Memorial at night.

You will have plenty of light and should have plenty of company if you stay by the reflecting pool.

The Lincoln Memorial at night is an awesome sight and a favorite of many. Don't be surprised if it seems crowded, even late at night.

4. Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Night

From there, unless you saw it on your way, consider going to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This is one of the best memorials to visit on a DC night tour.

There do not seem to be many people at night, and the stillness of the evening help to reflect on the sacrifice of those who served.

If you call it good at that point, you probably haven't been out too long, and can go back to your hotel or other abode and call it a night.

Continue Along the Path

But if you have time, stamina, and the desire to see it all, if you head south from the Lincoln Memorial, and walk along the west bank of the Tidal Basin, you can see quite a few more memorials.

5. Jefferson Memorial at Night

The last stop will be the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, which is over a mile from the Lincoln Memorial.

Smithsonian Station

The good news is that you can get to the Smithsonian Station from there by continuing counterclockwise along the Tidal Basin (it takes about another mile).

Other Monuments Along the Way

Korean war veterans memorial and martin luther king jr memorial.

Walking another mile is a tall order for me unless I get an early start. But if I'm ambitious, I might go part way, hitting the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

The other memorial along that route is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. This is an expansive memorial, with quite a bit to see.

Complete List of Memorials and Monuments

Here is a complete list of the major memorials and monuments on the National Mall in no particular order:

  • Jefferson Memorial
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial
  • Lincoln Memorial
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Washington Monument
  • World War II Memorial
  • Martin Luther King Memorial

Now for the fun part!  There is so much walking involved when seeing the monuments plus night time can be intimidating if you are alone. Let's list out some of the best night tours of Washington DC so you will not have to deal with that.

On our most recent trip, we decided to take the daytime bus tour .  We talked with many people who had done the DC night monument tour and loved it.  They said it was even better than the day tour. Unfortunately, the DC by night tour wasn't offered on the days we were in DC.

The Monuments by moonlight Trolley Tour is another option. These are some of the best options for Washington DC night tours!

4. Segway Monuments at Night Tour

Take a Drive to Iwo Jima

After you visit all of the monuments near the Mall, take a driving tour of DC monuments at night to Iwo Jima.  It is a short drive, and so worth it.  On our last trip, we never adjusted to East Coast time.  We ended up visiting Iwo Jima at midnight!

I loved seeing this monument at night! There is plenty of parking all around! My brother was in the Marines, so this one has a special place in my heart.

This was one of the best DC monuments at night to visit for me!

I live in the D.C. area and love visiting the monuments at night! It is always so fun to explore with way fewer people around. Also, Big Bus tours has an awesome night tour that is worth doing at least once.

I will look it up!

I love the monuments in DC at night. The last trip I took there was with my daughter on her 8th-grade school trip and we arrived (after being on buses all day) in the evening – we had a picnic dinner and then toured several of the monuments after dark. Such a great start to the trip.

That sounds like a great trip. I hope my kids get to do fun things like that!

I would like to try the Night Time Roadster Tour. I like learning from tour guides about history.

I do too! That would be a cool tour!

These pictures are cool! We have sort of mapped out a trip to D.C., but we wanted to wait until our youngest was just a tad older. I’ve been three times, but the rest of my family hasn’t. I was totally looking into a night tour of the monuments. I remember walking around the mall in July! Night would be better. I’ll keep your tips in mind for when we do go!

Yes, I want to wait until my kids are a little older. Although, when we lived there I had a 2 and a 4 year old and we had lots of fun.

The segway and nighttime roadster tours look awesome! I imagine it’s a whole different experience seeing those monuments up close. Thanks for sharing your tips; I’ve pinned it for when we next go to DC!

Oh good! I think a tour is the way to go because it is a lot of walking otherwise!

Such great photos Lisa! I never thought about visiting DC Monuments at night … it is beautiful!

This trip was because my husband had conferences all day! But so beautiful for sure!

When I was in college I visited my friend who lived in D.C. and we toured the monuments at night. It was such a fun experience.

I went to DC for the first time in college too! My roommate grew up there.

I love DC at night! I definitely think most people only go see the sights during the day, but I remember in high school we went to DC every year and it was an 8 hour drive. By the time we got there it was the evening and we would go by the Mall and the White House. We always went back the next day for our actual sightseeing, but they all look so great at night.

Yes, I would see them both at day and night to get the full experience!

It would be interesting to see the monuments at night and for long exposure photography.

Yes, some great shots!

The monuments looks amazing at night. We haven’t been to Washington DC yet but we have talked about going.

DC is a great place for a vacation!

I love the monuments at night. It is such a different experience at night.

When we lived there we did July 4th on the Mall. It was incredible!

How fun to do a night tour! I hope to visit DC soon. I’d definitely do this.

There are some fun tours and sites to see!

These are stunning photos! I’ve only seen the White House at night…will use this as a guide the next time I visit.

Thanks! I hope to plan another trip in the next few years.

I think seeing the monuments at night would be even more magical than seeing them during the daytime. I’ve still never been to DC. Had a trip paid for and then COVID happened! Rats! Hopefully another time. I enjoyed your photos!

Hopefully, you get to go one day. I love Washington DC!

Amazing post! I have traveled to so many places but never to Washington DC.. Its on my bucket list and the night time Monuments are now at the top! Thank you for sharing!

You should go, you would love it!

Thanks for sharing this article. I didn’t realize that they were so lit up and you could experience them at night. What a fun way to see the memorials. I do want to get to DC someday to see all that history has to offer there. We have to learn from history the good, bad and ugly because it is where we came from.

So true! I love all the monuments because they help us remember where we came from.

I’ve seen the monuments many times, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen them at night. That is a great idea. I would love to try out the Segway too.

Segway looks like a cool tour!

See I never would have thought about visiting these monuments at night! Now I absolutely will! Very cool idea and Washington seems like such a great city for it.

It is an amazing vacation spot!

Great information, I’d love to go during the cherry blossom festival and the see the Smithsonian!

I have always loved the monuments at night…so beautiful!

They really are so beautiful!

These are gorgeous, and absolutely on my list of vacation spots now!

I think every American needs to see Washington DC at least once in their lifetime!

The monuments are beautiful day and night. DC is one of my favorite places.

me too! I have such a love for our country and Washington DC!

There’s something very magical about seeing everything at night. Thanks for sharing your great pictures.

No problem! It is magical!

I’ve been to DC many times as a child and teenager. I had the opportunity to be stationed there while in the Navy, but I didn’t want to deal with the traffic every day! LOL

I can say, that I’ve only ever driven the beltway at night, not actually visited the monuments, but it is definitely beautiful!

The traffic is horrible. I agree! Metro during no peak hours is what we did frequently.

Wow! We have only been to DC for two short days, and were too tired by nightfall to stick around! Looks fabulous! Next time we go, will have to look into a night walk for sure! Also love the Segwey idea!! Lol

DC is one of those vacations that you go go go. So having enough energy is key!

We have not seen the monuments at nite. Sounds like we need to plan to do that!

DC is awesome!

nighttime always brings such intensity to any vista and these images are no different. beautiful. the segway tour looks so fun!

I know I need to go back and do the segway tour!

Thank you for all the awesome photos. Washington, DC is onour bucket list.

It is such a great spot to visit!

I love this idea! I pinned it! We are always going to DC during the day, now I want to go at night. What a new experience! We always take the metro up from Vienna. Thank you for the inspiration and idea! I love your travels and blog!!!

Thanks! I lived in Oakton which was near Vienna!

Beautiful! Something about the monuments at night make them more special.

For sure! They are beautiful!

Looks like a great trip! great pics!

I will definitely be adding this to my list of places to visit when I go on my road trip! Thanks for the ideas!

So cool! My son got to experience this on a school trip a few years ago.

I hope my kids get to go.

Such striking photos. Breathtaking!

It is so beautiful!

I remember visiting here one summer and we walked the entire length from the capital to the Lincoln memorial while visiting many of the monuments you mentioned. It was hot! Maybe some day I’ll go back and see it at night. Sounds beautiful!

DC can be so hot! It is a ton of walking too!

My son has done this tour with a company that takes student groups, but we did not go! It looks really interesting! I appreciate the tips!

This would be a great tour to take!

WOW!! This post brought back memories!! I use to live in Ohio and Delaware and would visit DC. Now I live in Alaska and haven’t been there in about 20 years. My last visit was when one of my students won a writing contest and she and I went to DC to accept her award (and met 50 other students). It was a great visit!

DC is so amazing! I love all the monuments!

I really enjoyed your perspective. I think the monuments take on a new feeling at night, and I certainly enjoy the view without all the crowds!

I am a big fan too!

Everywhere you look you’ll find granite and marble fashioned into some of America’s most iconic buildings and landmarks. These structures are imbued with the events of the past that have molded and formed this country into the bastion of liberty and democracy known the world over. When evening comes, this city resonates with a power you can only feel here. Abraham Lincoln, sitting stoically overlooking the National Mall comes alive at the memorial of his namesake.

With stops at the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial, FDR, Lincoln, Vietnam Veterans, Korean War,  and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorials, there’s a whole other beauty and majesty that DC projects by the light of the moon and this tour captures every sparkling moment.

American History Lives In Washington DC

Washington DC not only serves as the very foundation of the power structure of the United States where it’s laws are written and where the interests of all 50 states are represented, but it is also a living chronology of the trials, tribulations, successes, and milestones that define this republic. Pierre L’Enfant, George Washington’s trusted city planner, converted this district of forests and marshes into the public squares and wide avenues you see today. A triumvirate of this nation’s most important documents, the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence are all kept here in the rotunda of the National Archives for all to see. There are remembrances of all sorts commemorating wars, patriots, and landmark events and even the museums and galleries represent the very best in American innovation. Whether a visitor from another country or a U.S. citizen, a trip through the Nation’s Capital is a trip worth taking!

THINGS TO DO IN WASHINGTON DC

Whether you’re looking to cut a rug listening to some cracklin’ good rockabilly or finding just the right armadillo boots to give your dad for his birthday, these great spots have received our stamp of approval.

If you want to try something outside of the normal drives and walks, this lively tour gets you into the thick of the action!

Covering more ground and offering a whole new vantage point on the city, it’s a lovely way to get to know the area.

Washington DC Driving Tour

Every time we visit Washington, D.C. we do a car tour of the area.  Our favorite Washington, D.C. drive is a quick tour through the heart of the nation’s capital.

This drive is basically a simple drive along the National Mall and the area stretching from the Potomac River and Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capital.  The route goes by many of major monuments, museums and government buildings.

Washington, D.C. is known for its traffic, but this central area can be surprisingly uncrowded.  The entire drive can be done in less than half an hour.

Washington DC tour

Go Washington D.C.: Save up to 47% on top museums, tours, and activities, and pay nothing at the gate.

driving tour of dc monuments at night

This route closely follows the Red Loop of the Washington, D.C. hop-on, hop-off bus tour.  If we were visiting the area for the first time, we would definitely do this tour as it adds some other more complicated routes.  They also provide narration of the many historic sites on the route.  This tour is available through for a discount through the Go Washington DC Pass .

I was born a block from the White House at George Washington University Hospital.  Although I live In San Diego I have been to Washington, D.C. hundreds of times. Nevertheless, I am always amazed at the new discoveries I make.  This is an area where history is currently being made every day.

NOTE: Most of the pictures from the post were taken in an actual drive on this route in April 2019.  We also did this drive in November 2019. It is designed to give you an indication of what you are likely to see without dressing it up.  There are a couple of exceptions but they are indicated in the caption.

Our basic route comes from Virginia across the Potomac River on the I-66 freeway.  This goes across Theodore Roosevelt Island in the middle of the Potomac between Arlington, Virginia and D.C.  For many years my parents lived in Arlington right by Theodore Roosevelt Island.

As you enter the District of Columbia, the I-66 will take you straight onto Constitution Avenue.  Constitution Avenue is the main route along the north end of the National Mall.  It runs parallel to Independence Avenue on the south end of the Mall.

You start on Constitution Avenue by the Lincoln Memorial which will be directly on your right. There is significant road work going on in this area and it limited our drive through we did at the end of 2019.

The “National Mall area” starts on the right from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capital.  The official National Mall is the area from 14 th St to the U.S. Capital.  However, this is the start of one continuous green space that encompasses the area from the Potomac River to the Capital.

On the left at 22 nd street is a statute of Albert Einstein.  The Vietnam Memorial is directly to the right but is not visible from the road.

Constitution Avenue goes along the Reflecting Pools in front of the Lincoln Memorial until 17 th Street.  On the right at 17th Street is the World War II Memorial.  Beyond 17 th Street, the Mall area opens to the grounds of the Washington Monument.  The Monument just reopened in late 2019 after several years of repair.

Along this route there are many monuments and memorials that are not readily known.  This is where a guided tour can really enhance the experience.  For example at the corner of 17th and Constitution is what I have always called the Flaming Sword Memorial.  It is actually the Second Division Memorial .  It was dedicated in 1936 with the 18-foot flaming sword meant to represent the 2nd Division’s defense of Paris in World War I.

Washington DC tour

On the left of Constitution Avenue between 17 th and 15 th Street is the Ellipse and the White House Lawn.  You can get a distant view of the White House which is officially at 16 th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue (1600 Pennsylvania).  You used to be able to get much closer to the White House, but this will be your best view from a car.

Washington DC tour

Going past 15 th Street you enter the official National Mall area that runs one mile from the Washington Monument to the U.S. Capital.  This is the start of museum row with the large (and free) Smithsonian Institution museums.

Washington DC Tour

The first museum you will see is the impressive new National Museum of African American History and Culture .  Lines for this museum are still long and you need a timed ticket.

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

Next to the African American Museum are two family favorites, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History .

On the left on Constitution Avenue are government buildings where much of the work of the federal government is done.  Starting at 15 th St is the Department of Commerce.  Between 10th h and 14 th Street is the Federal Triangle area with buildings named after President Reagan, President Clinton and a Trump International Hotel. The IRS, EPA, US Customs and other agencies have their headquarters here.

The Department of Justice takes up an entire block along Constitution between 10 th and 9 th St.  At 9 th Street, just past the Natural History Museum is the National Archives on your left.  This impressive building is home to many historical documents including the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

On the right on Constitution Ave, from 9 th to 7 th St., is the outdoor National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.  This leads to the massive National Gallery of Art complex which runs across two main buildings from 7 th St to 3 rd St.

Washington DC Tour

Constitution Avenue merges right onto Pennsylvania Avenue before 4 th St. Pennsylvania Avenue runs diagonally from the U.S. Capital to the White House.

Washington DC Tour

Pennsylvania Avenue  ends directly in front of the U.S. Capital.  There is a roundabout at 1 st Street and Pennsylvania where there are spaces to briefly stop and take pictures.  First Street runs parallel to the Capital and Capital Hill.  On the right is a memorial to President Grant. It overlooks the Capital Reflecting Pool and the National Mall.

Washington DC tour

At the other end of the Capital, 1 st St comes to another roundabout.  This will take you onto Maryland Avenue.  The building directly ahead as you come down 1 st St is the United States Botanic Garden .

Washington DC tour

Maryland Avenue runs for just a block before bearing right onto Independence Avenue.  Independence Avenue runs parallel to Constitution Avenue on the south side of the Mall.  Again, on your right, will be museums and on your left government buildings.

The National Museum of the American Indian is right at the intersection of 3 rd St, Maryland and Independence Avenue. Next door is the massive Smithsonian Air and Space Museum which runs from 4th St to 7th St.  This museum is going through a massive 5-year reconstruction so there is the possibility of a detour.

Washington DC tour

On your left along Independence Avenue government buildings you see will include Health and Human Services (3 rd St), the Department of Education (4 th St), the FAA (7 th ), the Department of Energy (9 th to 12 th St) and the Department of Agriculture (12 th to 14 th St).

Past the donut shaped modern art Hirshhorn Museum between 7 th and 9th, is the original Smithsonian complex.  The first building is the Arts and Industries Building which was opened in 1881.  We have seen many exhibits here, but it is in the process of being restored.

Washington DC tour

The signature structure is the Smithsonian Institution Building (aka The Castle).   It was built in 1855.  Today it operates as the Smithsonian Visitor Center.  In front of the Castle are two art museums.  The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery focus on Asian art.  The National Museum of African Art focuses of course on the art of Africa.

Washington DC tour

From 12 th to 14 th Street the massive Department of Agriculture complex takes up both sides of the road.  At the corner of 14 th Street and Independence the official National Mall area ends.  To the left is the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum.  The Washington Monument area is on the right.

Washington DC tour

As you drive on Independence along the Washington Monument grounds, to your left is the Tidal Basin.  This is where the famous cherry blossoms bloom for a couple of weeks during the end of March/early April (it varies but the mean date is April 4 th ).

Washington DC tour

The opposite end of the Tidal Basin is framed by the Jefferson Memorial.  This entire area consists of grassy parks on both sides of the street.  On the right is the World War II Memorial at the start of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.  On the left at the end of the Tidal Basin is the Marin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

Washington DC tour

Right before the Lincoln Memorial, on the right is the Korean War Veterans Memorial.  Like the Vietnam Memorial it is not really visible from the road.

It is here that some issues with our driving route occurred in late 2019.  Construction and/or security issues can change plans in Washington, D.C. and one needs to be prepared to run an audible.

Washington DC tour

Currently there is a great deal of construction going on near the Lincoln Memorial and several roads are closed for either the short or long-term.

Normally the route would be to go across the Arlington Memorial Bridge, but this is closed for major remodeling .  Instead our plan was to go along Ohio Dr down the Potomac starting at the Lincoln Memorial.  We would turn left on West Basin Dr back to Independence Avenue.  We would head back Independence Avenue to 14 th Street where we would go right and get on the I-395.

However, the route to Ohio Dr was blocked.  Instead, we took Independence Avenue back to Maine Avenue along the Tidal Basin.  At this point we picked up the I-395 back into Virginia.

Washington DC tour

As an alternative route you can circle around the Tidal Basin.  Basin Dr runs one-way clockwise around the Tidal Basin.  It gives you a good view of the Jefferson Memorial and goes by the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. It meets back up with Independence Avenue by the Martin Luther King Memorial.

Just be aware that this area has regular road closures and many of the streets run one-way.  However, even with road closures this is a simple drive.  The goal is to get a quick taste of central Washington, D.C.

For some longer drives in the area some top suggestions would be:

  • George Washington Memorial Parkway: a scenic drive running on the Virginia side of the Potomac from Washington’s Mt Vernon home in the south to Great Falls National Park in the north.
  • Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway: starting from the Lincoln Memorial, the parkway runs along the Potomac River past the Kennedy Center and infamous Watergate buildings.  Past Watergate and Georgetown it turns north through the district, going past the zoo and DC’s largest open space park area.
  • Massachusetts Avenue: Massachusetts runs through the Northwest section of the District from Union Station to Maryland.  It goes by Embassy Row, the Vice=President’s house on the grounds of the National Observatory and the Washington National Cathedral .

I want to drive myself around D.C. to see the monuments at night. However, I am having trouble finding a driving map. I want to know which streets are closed around the monuments and oneways streets. Can anyone help me?

' class=

This is a pretty good map of tourist DC, but I don't see any indication of what streets are one-way.

http://www.nps.gov/PWR/state/DC/upload/NPS-Map-Washington-DC.pdf

' class=

Also, there are not really any one way streets. There maybe a thick grass strip that separates each direction but not really one way streets. When you get closer to downtown or uptown you may see more one way streets. Good luck!

driving tour of dc monuments at night

OTOH, I discovered, quite by accident, plenty of free parking just a couple of blocks away. We parked right in front of the Organization Of American States main building (which was magnificently lit up, btw). You can see what a great location this was on the map on their web site http://www.oas.org/en/about/our_locations.asp -- it's the location right in front of the elipse.

From there you could walk to the Washington, Lincoln, WW II, Korea and Vietnam memorials

driving tour of dc monuments at night

A kid-friendly trip to Washington, D.C.

Lots of successes, a few mistakes in our jam-packed days in the nation’s capital.

The second-floor exhibit at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., features a collection of iconic world landmarks and places built out of Legos, and a play area where kids could build their own Lego constructions.

Were we losing our minds? Some of our family and friends thought so. We were taking three young kids, ages 8, 6, and 3 to Washington, D.C., for vacation. They’re too young, they tsked. The age range is too broad, they suggested. So. Much. Work, they concurred. A better option, they suggested, only half-joking, might be an all-inclusive Caribbean resort with a swimming pool and a full-day children’s program.

Oh, pshaw!, we thought. We love D.C. and we were excited to take the kids to the nation’s capital. In fact, Washington, D.C., is one of the top family vacation destinations in the country. It’s filled with top-notch, hands-on museums — including the 17 free Smithsonian museums — expansive parks and pocket green spaces, grand-scale monuments and museums, and vibrant neighborhoods. There are giant dinosaurs, fossils and bones, meteorites and rare gems, big planes, secret spy gadgets, mega Lego buildings, live animals, creepy insects, and thousands of beautiful butterflies — to name a few highlights.

We planned to spend two nights and two days in D.C., and to see as much as we could. Our tentative itinerary was jam-packed. That was our first mistake.

Full speed ahead

The early-morning direct flight from Boston to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was a quick, easy jaunt. We hired an XL ride share, battled with the portable booster seats we’d brought, and arrived at the Royal Sonesta Capitol Hill hotel before lunchtime. The recently opened hotel has spacious rooms (standard rooms starting under $200 a night, depending on the time of year), with contemporary furnishings. We stayed in a suite with a separate seating area and an adjoining room. The two rooms gave us plenty of space. We especially liked the hotel’s location, which was an easy walk to the US Capitol and the National Mall, a 2-mile or so green park lined with Smithsonian Institution museums.

First on our agenda was a visit to the International Spy Museum in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood along the Potomac River. Confession: This was the adults’ choice; we’d never been to the museum and wanted to check it out. Currently showing: “Bond in Motion,” a collection of 17 original James Bond vehicles. We were psyched to see it; the kids weren’t much interested.

There are a lot of displays here that go right over young kids’ heads, but the museum turned out to be the 8-year-old’s favorite spot. We picked up our secret identities and undercover mission cards upon arrival and looked for the spy mission hands-on activities throughout the museum, including cracking secret codes, practicing observation skills, creating gadgets, and testing our strength, hanging from a hand bar. The youngest played along, pushing this and peering through that, and clamoring through The Duct Crawl, several times. But we concluded that this museum is best for older children, say 8 or 9 years and older.

Hello there! The large animal skeleton displays at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History are kid favorites.

“Consider your kids’ ages,” Elliott L. Ferguson II, president and CEO of Destination DC , the official destination marketing organization for the nation’s capital, advises. “Washington, D.C., boasts attractions for every age group. I recommend making sure you visit the ones tailored to spark the most interest and creativity.”

Afternoon meltdown

After the International Spy Museum, our plan was to visit the Jefferson Memorial. But it had already been a long travel day for the kids. We enjoyed Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cones at the nearby Wharf, a new, lively waterfront development, followed by a little downtime at the hotel.

Later, in the early evening, we jumped on the Big Bus Night Tour , a spur-of-the-moment decision that turned out to be the right one. Washington, D.C., is especially beguiling at night when the monuments are lit up. The hop-on, hop-off tour visits many of the major memorials, including the White House and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. The kids could relax on the bus (they skipped the headphones for the prerecorded commentary) and still took in the iconic sights.

“There’s something special about seeing the monuments and memorials lit after dark,” Ferguson agrees. “Don’t miss seeing them aglow after dinner.”

Another note about the Big Bus hop-on, hop-off tours: well worth it! The daytime Red Loop tour makes 17 stops at major Smithsonian Museums and famous monuments and memorials. We used it for sightseeing, but also for transportation, hopping on when little legs (and weary adults) needed a rest. (Tip: Also bring a stroller; you’ll need it. And wear comfortable shoes; you’ll be walking a lot.) “You won’t need a car in Washington, D.C. In fact, one of the best ways to experience the city is on foot,” Ferguson says. And taking the bus or subway and hiring rideshares all are better options than driving.

Want to touch it? A live insect presentation at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History keeps the kids interested.

Rise and shine

Let’s go kids; we have a full day of fun activities planned! On our second day, we walked to the US Capitol and along the National Mall. The kids enjoyed running and playing tag (lesson: leave time for unstructured play), as we made our way to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History . This massive museum is one of the largest of its kind in the world, filled with extraordinary exhibits and collections, with some 148 million specimens and artifacts. The kids were instantly drawn to the Hall of Mammals, with full-size giraffes, hippos, lions, cheetahs, and many, many more. The David H. Koch Hall of Fossils , with some 700 fossil specimens, was another kid (and grown-up) favorite, including a face-to-face greeting with a life-size skeleton of the Nation’s T. Rex and triceratops. In Sant Ocean Hall we walked under a model of a 45-foot-long North Atlantic Right Whale, and gazed into aquariums filled with sea creatures and coral. The hall features more than 600 specimens. We posed for photos looking through the jaws of a megalodon, a giant shark that went extinct some 3.6 million years ago.

The 6-year-old, who had just received a rock tumbler for his birthday, was excited about the Geo Gallery and got everyone else involved, looking at the massive, shiny gemstones, and the collection of meteorites. In all, the museum has some 350,000 mineral specimens and 10,000 gemstones, one of the largest of its kind in the world, including the world-famous Hope Diamond.

We thought we’d buzz through the O. Orkin Insect Zoo , the oldest continuously operating insect zoo in the US. But the kids were mesmerized by the collection of creepy crawlies. They nudged to the front of a live presentation on a bug we didn’t recognize “Who wants to touch it?,” the presenter asked, and a group of little hands flew up. Scrambling through a 14-foot-tall model of an African termite mound was another favorite.

The museum was a hit. Next on the agenda was a visit to the National Children’s Museum of Washington, D.C. However, we’d already missed our timed entry slot. Did we have time for another museum? A visit to the National Zoo? Not really.

“A common misconception is about the time you’ll spend exploring museums,” says Ferguson. “We often hear that families had no idea how cool it would be to see the dinosaurs, or spaceships, or presidential artifacts.”

We’d overloaded our itinerary, and we suspected the kids were now on sensory overload. We grabbed snacks and drinks from a sidewalk vendor and walked and skipped our way to the Washington Monument, roaming through some of the Smithsonian Gardens along the way.

So many choices

What to do on our final morning before our flights back to Boston? The choices were overwhelming. We decided on a visit to the lesser known National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. , which had just opened its “Building Stories” exhibition. The four-room, immersive exhibition examines the world of architecture, engineering, construction, and design found in children’s books, including 150 books representing 28 countries. We found it fascinating for both kids and adults. The kids particularly enjoyed receiving a sketchbook and souvenir pencil that served as a guide through the exhibition, with places for stamps to collect along the way. There are cozy reading nooks, a small theater in the round, illustrating favorite books like “The Snowy Day,” a wall of alphabet books, and an entire area designed and built by David Macaulay, illustrating his “Rome Antics,” a 1997 picture book depicting buildings of Rome as seen by a homing pigeon. The final room features large, soft building blocks for kids to build their own structures. The second floor “Lego Room” (as the kids called it) featured a collection of iconic world landmarks and places built out of Legos, and a play area where kids could build their own Lego constructions.

We ended in a mad dash to the airport, where we waited for our delayed flight home. For more information, visit www.washington.org . Note that some Smithsonian Museums require timed entry reservations.
