What to AVOID wearing on a Desert Safari in Dubai

A desert safari is a great way to experience the diverse landscapes of Dubai, from the towering sand dunes to the endless stretches of empty coastline. However, there are a few things to completely avoid when going for a desert safari -

  • Tight body-hugging clothing
  • Leaving your head exposed to the sun
  • Dark colours or heavy fabrics that will absorb the sun's rays.
  • Loose-fitting clothes as they could get caught on things or blown around in the wind.
  • Wearing heels/footwear that make it impossible to walk in the sand.

Dubai Desert Safari Dresscode

No matter what the weather is, wearing comfortable clothing and eliminating potential risks to avoid health issues from the extreme weather remains ultimate. Respecting the local norms is also as important as the former.

By following these simple guidelines, you'll be sure to have a comfortable and safe experience on your desert safari.

  • Lightweight fabrics are best, as it can get quite hot during the day. Wear breathable materials like cotton or linen over synthetic ones.
  • The temperature can drop quickly in the evening, so it's a good idea to bring a light jacket or a sweater.
  • It's a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from the sun and from any potential desert creatures.
  • Try to wear at least mid-thigh length shorts or pants. Shorts exposing your bottom are not appreciated by the locals.
  • For ladies, it is better to skip outfits showing excessive cleavage. Sleeveless tops are acceptable as long as they are not skimpy.
  • Short skirts must be avoided, as meals are often eaten on the floor and can seem uncomfortable, especially with the breeze.
  • Closed-toe shoes are essential, as you'll be doing a lot of walking.
  • A hat or scarf can help keep your head cool.
  • Don't forget to pack sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Ideally, winter is the best time to go for your desert safari. The weather tends to be cooler from November to February, especially in the desert after sunset and until early morning. Make sure to dress in layers, so you easily remove your outer layers off once the sun's out. Long jeans with Cardigans or Jumpers would be ideal. Be sure to carry a snug-fitting hat with ear flaps or earmuffs to protect against the cool breeze. Carrying a scarf or pashmina shawl is recommended. Lip balms and moisturising creams can be carried to avoid dry skin. .

From March to May, the weather is pleasant and comfortable. Layered clothing can be skipped, and casual clothing can be worn during these months. Make sure to carry a jacket, as temperatures drop at night.

Dressing for Desert Activities in Dubai

Desert Safari is a unique experience that offers the chance to explore the desert landscape and learn about the traditional way of life in the UAE.

The safari typically begins with a 4x4 pick-up from your hotel, followed by an exciting drive into the desert. Once at the camp, you can try your hand at sandboarding, ride a camel, or simply relax and enjoy the stunning sunset. After dark, there will be a delicious barbecue dinner under the stars, followed by traditional entertainment such as belly dancing and henna painting. Dressing appropriately for all the activities makes it easier to have a fun-filled experience.

Dune Bashing

  • The rugged ride in the sand is not for the faint-hearted. Make sure to wear clothes that hold on to their place.
  • Skirts, Sarees, or similar free-flowing clothes must be avoided to handle the tussle of the ride safely.
  • Outfits and accessories with spikes or pointy details should be avoided for the safety of yourself and others in the vehicle.

Camel Riding

Camel Riding is a fun experience and a chance to relive the desert backdrop shown in the movies. However, it may not always be the most comfortable experience, especially if it is your first time riding a camel. Choose shorts over skirts, and pants over dresses. Make sure the outfit is not made or course material or has sharp details on it, as it can potentially hurt the camel.

Sandboarding

Comfortable footwear is the key when it comes to a comfortable sand experience. Choose closed-toe footwear to avoid the sand entering between your toes and creating a gritty base. Again, shorts over skirts and free-flowing outfits to get better traction while sandboarding.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Quad Biking

You’ll want something to tie back long hair and sports-wear clothing would be best.

For the sport-loving squad, there is no better adventure than Quad Biking in the desert. Avoid heels, short skirts, and loose hair to avoid potential risks while biking. Closed-toe footwear should be worn at all costs.

BBQ Dinner & Entertainment

BBQ Dinners are typically served on rugs on the floor. Hence, choosing outfits that are comfortable while sitting on the floor is ideal. The tanoura show and belly dancing also happens while everyone is seated. Short skirts are best avoided. Carrying extra tops is recommended, so you can change into a fresh pair after all the activities during the day. Sandals or flip-flops can be used while sitting down.

Footwear for your Desert Safari

When planning a desert safari, it is important to choose the right footwear. The last thing you want is to end up with blisters or worse, injured feet. While there are many types of shoes on the market, not all of them are suitable for walking in sandy, often uneven terrain. The key is to find shoes that will keep your feet cool while also providing adequate protection from the hot sand and sharp rocks.

Closed-toe shoes are a must to protect your feet from scorpions and other desert creatures. A good pair of desert boots made of breathable material with a sturdy sole can provide traction on loose sand. In addition, you should choose those desert boots that are both comfortable and lightweight, as you will likely be doing a lot of walking during your safari. Sandals or light hiking shoes are a good choice for keeping your feet cool, but make sure they have a good grip to prevent slipping. And if you're planning on doing any camel riding, be sure to wear shoes that won't fall off easily.

With the right footwear, you'll be able to enjoy your desert safari experience to the fullest.

Accessories for your Desert Safari

  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the harsh rays.
  • A sand proof bag to keep all your devices.
  • Hats to protect you from the sun.
  • Binoculars can come in handy for spotting wildlife.
  • Plenty of sunscreen for all the UV rays in the desert (minimum SPF 50).
  • Lip balm with a minimum SPF of 30.
  • Deodorants and antiperspirant wipes to stay fresh throughout the safari.
  • A spacious backpack to store all your belongings.
  • A sturdy waist bag that stays in place to store tissues, mobile, etc.

What to wear to a desert safari: complete dress code

You’ve finally booked that long-awaited trip to the land of the sand and can’t wait to see all the cloud-scraping towers, gold-dipped attractions and record-breaking wonders of Dubai for yourself. However, as most travellers would probably agree, one of the biggest challenges involved in the art of wanderlust starts with an empty suitcase and no idea what to fill it with. Since your impressive Dubai itinerary surely includes an epic adventure in the majestic desert dunes, we’re here to help you out a bit. So grab a pen and your packing list and keep reading to find out how to dress for a desert safari to enjoy your exceptional escapade to the fullest.

Freedom in the desert

Keep things light and bright

An action-packed desert safari is guaranteed to be one of the biggest highlights of your trip. But choosing the perfect dress code for a desert safari in Dubai, can make or break your time in the dunes. Although you’ll most likely be accompanied by other tourists on your sand-filled adventure, it’s still important to take both weather conditions and the local dress code into consideration when choosing your fit for the day.

Our number one recommendation on how to dress for a desert safari, is to opt for lightweight and breathable clothing, since daytime temperatures can definitely have the mercury shooting for the skies. Your best bet is to go for natural materials like cotton and linen and steer clear of synthetics. As most desert activities require strolling the sands in direct sunlight, it’s important to keep yourself covered. If you’re trying to figure out what to wear to a desert safari during the summer, we suggest making sure you pack a long-sleeved shirt and preferably a pair of lightweight long trousers. You can, of course, show up in a pair of shorts, but bear in mind that you’ll be spending quite a bit of your time in an air-conditioned 4x4 and as soon as the sun drops in the desert, so will the temperature. When choosing their preferred pair of bottoms, women should also be cautious of overly revealing clothing, to avoid coming off as offensive in the United Arab Emirates.

As mentioned, depending on the season, the desert can be pretty cold (we’re talking freezing) in the early sunrise hours and in the evening. So if you’re thinking about what to wear on a desert safari during the winter, this is where layers come in. You won’t go wrong with bringing a comfortable hoodie, light jacket, poncho or big shawl with you. It will keep you warm on both an early morning safari as well as during the legendary evening safari.

When it comes to figuring out your perfect colour scheme to dress up for a desert safari, we’d suggest keeping things on the bright side. If you’re looking to pop on those Insta-worthy shots you’ll be sharing with your friends, go for vibrant colours or classic whites. To avoid attracting any additional sunrays, it’s best to leave the darker tones for your next ski trip.

Sunset in the desert

If the shoe fits…

…make sure it’s comfortable and preferably closed-toe when aiming for that winning dress code for a desert safari in Dubai. When it comes to choosing how to dress for a desert safari, picking the right kicks is almost as important as everything north of it. Though you can of course slip into your favourite sandals or flip flops, you’ll probably be most comfortable in a pair of sneakers or light boots. Strolling through the sand can be quite the balancing act at times, so sturdy footwear will be your best friend. Closed-toe shoes will also ensure you won’t have sand sticking to your toes at all times.

In case you were wondering what to avoid wearing on a desert safari in Dubai, it probably goes without saying that stilettos and all high-heeled shoes for that matter are best reserved for a fabulous dinner you’ll surely be attending while in the magical city.

Accessories and other add-ons

There’s quite a few things to carry on a desert safari to elevate your experience. You may have your perfect headgear picked out for your visit to the horse race, but don’t forget to pack a hat for the day in the desert. A suitable hat will offer you much-needed protection from the sun and the winds that can sometimes pick up at a moment’s notice. You can also opt for a scarf that’ll cover both the head and face and shield you from the sand.

Make sure you bring a pair of sunglasses, procure some high-SPF sunscreen, and smack on a generous layer of lip balm. If you want to look like a true desert pro, stock up on some wet wipes to freshen up as needed.

Chilling in the desert

Outfit for any occasion

Your desert safari in Dubai will most likely consist of a number of action-packed activities. When trying to hit the mark with what to wear on a desert safari during the summer and what to wear on a desert safari during the winter, there are some non-negotiables. To make the most of every experience and not miss out on any fun because of a style slip-up, here’s a few tips to keep in mind when assembling your outfit of the day.

Your time in the desert will most likely start with a thrilling dune drive. Although your clothing should be flowy and breathable, something to avoid wearing on a desert safari in Dubai, are clothes that are too loose-fitting as they can get caught in things. For the sake of you and your fellow adventurers, don’t wear any sharp or pointy accessories that could injure anyone as your tackling the dunes.

There’s a good chance you’ll be channelling your inner Emirati strolling through the sand on the back of a camel. The dinner and entertainment portion of your adventure will also have you sitting down on the ground, so the dress code for a desert safari in Dubai leaves no room for a short skirt, dress or shorts. Go for stretchy pieces that’ll keep you covered and comfortable throughout the day.

If you’ve decided to treat your thrill-seeking side to an exhilarating dune buggy experience , opting for sporty and not too loose-fitting clothing is the best idea when thinking about how to dress for a desert safari. For the ladies with flowy locks, a hair-tie is a must.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – make sure you bring warm clothes. Especially when faced with a question of what to wear on a desert safari during the winter. There’s nothing worse than having your sumptuous barbeque dinner ruined by shivering in the sand. Once the sun has set, wrap yourself up in a cosy shawl, sweater or hoodie, so the fun can continue without any inconveniencies.

What to Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai: Your Go-To Guide

  • Post author: Ilyas
  • Post published: October 3, 2023
  • Post category: Desert Safari

Hello there, traveller! Considering a trip to the famous golden dunes of Dubai? Are you wondering what to wear for a desert safari in Dubai ?  We’ve got you covered!  A desert safari is more than simply a day trip; it’s an adventure that takes you deep into the desert. Like any journey, choosing the appropriate clothing may make a huge impact.

What NOT to Wear on a Desert Safari

  • Tight Clothing: Picture climbing a dune while wearing extremely tight pants. It’s hardly the best plan, is it? Choose a breathable option.
  • Unprotected Headgear : The sun in the desert is no joke. The best buddy you can have is a hat or scarf.
  • Dark or thick fabrics : These may appear stylish, but the heat of the desert may fry you.
  • Flowy, loose clothing : These are best since you don’t want your favourite scarf to get tangled in a shrub.
  • Impractical Footwear : Refrain from wearing those high heels out of the hotel. Trust us on this. You’ll thank us later!

Dressing Properly for Your Dubai Desert Safari

Maintain Your Cool

Whenever deciding what to wear in Dubai desert safari, choose airy materials like cotton or linen. They’re your best bet against the scorching sun.

Desert Safari Dubai

Chilly Nights

The desert has a funny way of turning cold when the sun goes down. A cosy sweater or jacket will keep you snug.

Stay Protected

Long sleeves and trousers aren’t just stylish; they’ll protect you from the sun and the occasional desert critter.

Respect Local Culture

Dubai is modern but rooted in tradition. Knee-length shorts or trousers and modest tops are the way to go.

Shoes Matter

Closed-toe shoes will keep that pesky sand out and protect your feet.

Seasonal Tips for Your Desert Adventure

Spring (march to may):.

Daytime : When Dubai welcomes the warmth, think lightweight and breathable. Cotton or linen are your best friends. And lighter shades? They’re like your personal sun reflectors.

Evening :Evenings are still quite lovely, with a hint of a breeze. Maybe carry along a light jacket or a pashmina, just in case.

Summer (June to August):

Daytime : Ah, the Dubai summer! It’s sizzling out there. Loose, light-coloured attire is a must. And if you find fabrics that wick away sweat? Jackpot! Don’t forget your hat, sunnies, and a good sunscreen.

Evening:   Warm nights ahead! But if you’re chilling indoors, a light wrap or jacket might come in handy.

Autumn (September to November):

Daytime: The scorching days start to mellow down. Stick to airy fabrics, but feel free to play around with sleeve lengths.

Evening : As autumn deepens, evenings get a tad cooler. A snug jacket or cardigan is a smart choice.

Winter (December to February):

Daytime: Winter here is like a gentle hug. Layer up a bit – maybe a tee with a sweater on top. –

Evening : It can get a bit nippy, especially if you’re out in the open desert. A cozy jacket, a scarf, and even a beanie could be great additions.

A little heart-to-heart, Dubai is a beautiful blend of modern and traditional. So, no matter the season, dressing modestly is key. Especially when you’re exploring traditional spots, it’s good to cover up those shoulders and knees.

Dressing for Desert Activities

Dune Bashing : It’s as thrilling as it sounds. Wear something practical and avoid flowy outfits.

Desert Safari Dubai

Quad Biking: Tie up that hair and gear up in sporty attire. Sandboarding: Think snowboarding but warmer. Closed-toe shoes are a must. Camel Riding : It’s like riding a horse, but… lumpier. Comfort is key.

Desert Safari Dubai

BBQ Dinner & Entertainment: You’ll be seated on rugs, so think comfort. After a day of activities, relaxing in sandals or flip-flops feels heavenly.

Outfit Ideas for Your Desert Day Out:

For the Men : How about khaki linen shirts paired with comfy trousers? Throw in a waist bag and sturdy boots, and you’re all set.

For the Ladies : Wide-leg culottes with a modest beige top sound chic yet comfy. Add a birch bag, a snazzy leather belt, and white flip-flops, and you’re ready to rock the desert.

Footwear Tips

Protective footwear should be your first priority when choosing shoes for your desert adventure. You’ll realise why closed-toe shoes are so important once you’re out there, so make sure you wear them.

If you have a pair of desert boots, this is the perfect opportunity to show them off as they are created specifically for this type of terrain. However, don’t worry if you don’t have desert boots in your closet. You can navigate the sandy portions just as effectively with sandals that have decent traction or even lightweight hiking shoes.

Accessories  Your Desert Look

There are a few key considerations to keep in mind while accessorizing for your desert excursion. Sunglasses are a good place to start. A sand-proof bag is a great investment if you want to keep your electronics protected. Remember the power of a decent hat as well; the larger, the better for protecting you from the sun.

If you enjoy viewing wildlife, binoculars will be useful for those unanticipated “I spy a camel” moments.

Furthermore, sunburn is not the type of memento you want to bring home, so always bring sunscreen. Don’t forget to take some deodorants and wipes so that you may stay fresh during your travels.

Additionally, a roomy rucksack with a waist pouch for goods you need to grab quickly is great for carrying all of your necessities.

Traditional Desert Attire in Dubai

For the Men: The elegant Kandurah, Gutra, Shemagh, Agal, and Bisht.

For the Women : The graceful Abaya, Sheila, Jalaabiya, and Burqa.

Desert Safari Dubai

Final Words of Wisdom:

To conclude, It takes careful planning to navigate the peculiar environment of the desert. It is advisable to prepare an extra layer for warmth because the high midday heat gives way to unexpectedly cold evenings. Closed-toe shoes are extremely advised for navigating the sandy terrains since they provide both protection and comfort. While wearing jeans may seem like a no-brainer, you may discover that knee-length shorts or light-weight pants work better in the desert climate.

There you have it! Your ultimate guide on what to wear desert safari Dubai . Now, go out there and make some sandy memories!

Safe travels!

Essentials to Consider for Your Desert Safari Outfit

The desert environment is dusty, rough, and harsh for travellers. Whenever you are indulging in a unique experience such as the Dubai desert safari, you should always consider your comfort and safety from the sun’s rays and be ready for the changes in weather and temperature in the harsh and rough desert terrain.

Fabric of the Clothing

Always wear light and breathable natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Loose-fitting clothes are comfortable and keep you cool all through the day. Lightweight and breathable natural fabrics help regulate body temperature, which is essential in a hot and relentless environment such as the desert. Your attire should be comfortable and give you the much-needed flexibility while navigating the sandy terrain.

Long-Sleeved Shirts, T-Shirts and Pants

Long-sleeved shirts or t-shirts, along with full-sleeve pants, are ideal for the safari day trip, as they will shield you from the hot sun rays and also keep you cosy and warm during the nights. In addition, these clothes are breathable and lightweight, and protect you from sunburns while being out in the desert. It is better to avoid wearing jeans for your desert excursion, as you can feel uncomfortable in them. You must choose to wear light weight trousers or shorts. Trousers are convenient if you plan to participate in sand activities such as, sandboarding, dune bashing, camel riding, etc.

Light Weight Jacket

A light weight breathable jacket is essential to carry for your desert safari trip. Choose the one that offers protection against the wind and dust, while allowing ventilation.

Invest in a Nice Set of Sunscreen, Shades, and a Hat

As you must have realized by now, the sun in the desert is relentless and unforgiving, especially during the daytime.  Hence, you must take appropriate measures to safeguard your eyes and skin by using a good pair of shades and a good SPF-rated sunscreen. Taking the right precautions is essential to safeguard yourself from the blazing rays of the sun. The relentless sun rays can cause discomfort to your eyes and skin during the journey, especially when travelling during the afternoons or early evenings. In addition to this, wearing a hat can also help in keeping your head cool during the desert expedition.

It is not only comfortable clothes that matter but the right footwear too is equally crucial to keep injured feet and blisters away. Don shoes that give sufficient guard against prickly rocks as well as burning sand and simultaneously keep the feet fresh. Wear shoes that are idyllic to walk in uneven/sandy terrains.  In fact closed-toe shoes work wonders in defending the feet against tan as well as desert creatures. Desert boots are also a smart choice. Light hiking footwear or even sandals can be worn but with proper grip to avert slipping. During camel rides put on shoes which do not easily fall off.

Shemagh or Scarf

This fabric will serve as your trusted desert buddy, as it multitasks well, shielding your face and neck and helping to keep the desert dust away from your skin. Coughing and sneezing while inhaling the dust is something that you can be totally avoided with this head cover. In addition, you can also shield yourself from the blazing sun’s rays.

Essential Accessories

What to Wear In Dubai Desert Safari:

Packing the right outfit is key to having an enjoyable time amidst the Arabian sands. We recommend wearing lightweight, loose, breathable fabrics that cover your skin to protect against the sun and heat.

T-shirts and light long-sleeve tops make great options on top to shield your shoulders and arms. Pair these with loose shorts, skirts, or pants on the bottom – you’ll want flowy bottoms that don’t cling in the heat. Don’t forget a hat or scarf to shade your face and neck as well.

As for footwear, sandals won’t properly support you on the dunes. Instead, opt for sturdy shoes with grip, like trainers or hiking shoes that will stay securely on your feet. We don’t recommend flimsy slip-on shoes that could easily slide off.

While open sports sandals could work for those wanting air on their feet, closed-toe shoes tend to perform better in desert terrain.

Following these clothing tips will keep you cool, comfortable, and safe for your desert safari day in the Dubai sun. With the proper outfit, you’ll be ready to enjoy taking in the awe-inspiring red sand vistas and dune-bashing thrills during the evening desert safari Dubai we have in store for you.

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari: Essential Guide

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari

Table of Contents

When planning a desert safari in Dubai, it’s important to consider what to wear to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The desert climate can be harsh, with scorching temperatures during the day and chilly nights. Additionally, the activities involved in a desert safari, such as dune bashing and camel riding, require appropriate clothing to ensure your safety.

To begin with, it’s recommended to wear loose, breathable clothing that covers your arms and legs to protect you from the sun and sand. Light-coloured clothing is preferable as it reflects the sun’s rays and keeps you cooler. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes or heavy fabrics like denim, as they can be uncomfortable in the heat.

When it comes to footwear, closed-toe shoes like sneakers or hiking boots are the best option as they provide good grip and protect your feet from the hot sand. Sandals or flip flops are not recommended as they expose your feet to the elements and can be hazardous during activities like dune bashing. By dressing appropriately for a desert safari in Dubai, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari – Essential Clothing Items

dubai desert safari what to wear

When it comes to a Dubai desert safari, you need to dress appropriately to ensure comfort and safety throughout the trip. Here are some essential clothing items that you should consider packing for your desert safari adventure:

Loose-Fitting Clothing

Loose-fitting clothing is a must for a desert safari. It will help you stay cool in the hot and dry weather, and also allow for easy movement during activities like dune bashing, camel riding, and sandboarding. Opt for lightweight fabrics such as cotton, linen, or rayon to ensure maximum comfort.

Sun Protection

The sun can be intense in the desert, so it’s important to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or a cap to shield your face and eyes from the sun. Additionally, apply sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed skin to prevent sunburn.

Closed-Toe Shoes

Closed-toe shoes are essential for a desert safari as they protect your feet from the hot sand and rocky terrain. Opt for comfortable shoes that are sturdy and have good traction, such as sneakers or hiking boots.

Scarf or Shemagh

A scarf or shemagh is a versatile accessory that can be used to protect your face and neck from the sun, dust, and sand. It can also be used as a headwrap to keep your hair out of your face during activities like dune bashing.

Sunglasses are a must-have for a desert safari as they protect your eyes from the bright sun and sand. Opt for sunglasses with polarized lenses to reduce glare and improve visibility.

By packing these essential clothing items, you can ensure a comfortable and safe experience during your Dubai desert safari adventure.

Footwear for Desert Safari

Footwear for Desert Safari

When it comes to footwear for a Dubai desert safari, comfort and practicality are key. You’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet, walking on sand and potentially climbing sand dunes, so you’ll want to wear shoes that are sturdy and supportive.

Closed-toe shoes are a must to protect your feet from the hot sand and any potential hazards on the ground. Sneakers or hiking shoes are a good option, as they provide good support and traction. Avoid wearing sandals or flip-flops, as they offer little protection and can easily slip off in the sand.

If you’re planning on riding a camel during your desert safari, it’s important to wear shoes with a low heel. High heels or platform shoes are not recommended, as they can get stuck in the stirrups and cause injury.

It’s also important to consider the temperature when choosing your footwear. Breathable materials such as mesh or canvas can help keep your feet cool in the heat, while leather shoes may become uncomfortably hot.

Overall, choose a pair of shoes that are comfortable, sturdy, and appropriate for the activities you have planned. Don’t forget to break them in before your desert safari to avoid any discomfort or blisters.

Accessories for Comfort and Protection

Sunglasses and hats.

When you are out in the Dubai desert, the sun can be quite intense, and it is essential to protect your eyes and face from the harmful UV rays. Wearing sunglasses and a hat can help you stay comfortable and protected. Choose sunglasses with polarised lenses that offer 100% UV protection to reduce glare and protect your eyes. A wide-brimmed hat can also provide shade to your face and neck, keeping you cool and preventing sunburn.

Applying sunscreen is crucial when you are out in the desert, even if you are wearing protective clothing. Choose a high SPF sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and apply it generously to all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if you are sweating or swimming.

A lightweight scarf can be a versatile accessory to have when you are on a desert safari. It can protect your face and neck from the sun, dust, and wind, and can also be used to cover your head if you need to enter a mosque or other religious site. Choose a scarf made from breathable fabric such as cotton or linen to stay comfortable in the heat.

Remember, when you are on a desert safari, it is essential to stay comfortable and protected from the sun and other elements. By wearing the right accessories, you can enjoy your experience to the fullest.

What to Avoid Wearing

Avoid synthetic materials.

When packing for your Dubai desert safari, it’s important to avoid wearing synthetic materials. These materials, such as polyester and nylon, tend to trap heat and do not allow your skin to breathe. This can lead to discomfort and even heat exhaustion in the hot desert climate. Instead, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. These fabrics will keep you cool and comfortable during your safari.

Avoid Heavy Jewellery

While it may be tempting to wear your favourite statement jewellery pieces on your desert safari, it’s best to avoid heavy jewellery altogether. The bumpy terrain of the desert can cause your jewellery to jangle and bounce around, which can be both uncomfortable and distracting. Additionally, heavy jewellery can cause you to overheat and feel weighed down. Stick to simple, lightweight pieces that won’t get in the way of your adventure.

Remember, when packing for your Dubai desert safari, it’s important to prioritize comfort and practicality over fashion. By avoiding synthetic materials and heavy jewellery, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your safari experience without any unnecessary discomfort or distractions.

Special Considerations for Women

If you’re a woman planning to go on a Dubai desert safari, there are a few things to consider when it comes to what to wear. Firstly, it’s important to dress modestly out of respect for local customs and culture. This means covering your shoulders and knees, and avoiding tight or revealing clothing.

When it comes to footwear, it’s best to wear closed-toe shoes or boots to protect your feet from the sand and any potential hazards. Sandals or open-toe shoes may not be the best option as they can leave your feet exposed to the hot sand and sun.

It’s also worth considering wearing a hat or scarf to protect your head and face from the sun and sand. Sunglasses are also a must to protect your eyes from the bright desert sun.

If you’re planning to go on a desert safari during the cooler months, it’s important to remember to bring a jacket or cardigan as temperatures can drop significantly in the evenings.

Overall, dressing modestly and comfortably is key when it comes to what to wear on a Dubai desert safari. By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that you’re prepared for a safe and enjoyable experience in the desert.

Special Considerations for Men

When it comes to dressing for a Dubai desert safari, men should keep in mind a few key considerations. The desert climate can be hot and dry during the day and cool at night, so it’s important to dress appropriately for both conditions.

First and foremost, choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep you cool during the day. Cotton and linen are good choices, as they allow air to circulate and wick away sweat. Avoid synthetic materials, which can trap heat and moisture against your skin.

When it comes to footwear, opt for closed-toe shoes or boots that will protect your feet from the hot sand and rocks. Sandals or flip-flops may be tempting, but they offer little protection and can be uncomfortable on long walks.

It’s also important to cover your head and neck to protect them from the sun’s rays. A wide-brimmed hat or a scarf wrapped around your head and neck can provide shade and prevent sunburn.

Finally, consider bringing a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evening temperatures. Even in the desert, temperatures can drop significantly after the sun goes down, so it’s best to be prepared.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you’re comfortable and well-prepared for your Dubai desert safari.

Packing Tips for Dubai Desert Safari

When packing for a desert safari in Dubai, it’s important to keep in mind the extreme heat and sandy terrain. Here are some tips to help you pack for a comfortable and enjoyable experience:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing is a must. Opt for loose-fitting cotton or linen fabrics that will keep you cool.
  • Long-sleeved shirts and pants can also provide protection from the sun and sand.
  • Don’t forget to pack a hat or scarf to shield your face and neck from the sun.
  • Closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps are recommended to protect your feet from the sand and rocks.

Accessories

  • Sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from the bright sun and sand.
  • A small backpack or crossbody bag can be useful to carry water, sunscreen, and other essentials.
  • Consider bringing a lightweight jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
  • Sunscreen with a high SPF is a must to protect your skin from the harsh sun.
  • Lip balm with SPF can also be helpful to prevent dry, chapped lips.
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes can be useful to freshen up and clean your hands and face.

Other Essentials

  • Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated in the desert heat.
  • A camera or smartphone to capture the stunning views and memories.
  • Cash or credit card for any purchases or activities during the safari.

By following these packing tips, you’ll be prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable desert safari in Dubai.

Dubai Desert Safari Dress Code

When planning your Dubai desert safari adventure, it’s important to consider the dress code to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The desert climate can be extremely hot during the day and cold at night, so it’s important to dress appropriately.

Clothing: Loose, breathable clothing made from lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen is recommended. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes that can cause discomfort and restrict movement. It’s also important to cover your arms and legs to protect from the sun and sand.

Footwear: Comfortable and sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots are recommended. Sandals or flip flops are not suitable for desert safari as they do not provide adequate protection and support.

Headwear: A hat or a cap is essential to protect your head and face from the sun. A scarf or a shemagh can also be useful to cover your face and protect from the sand.

Accessories: Sunglasses are a must to protect your eyes from the sun and sand. It’s also recommended to bring a small backpack to carry essentials such as sunscreen, water, and a camera.

Colours: Neutral colours such as beige, khaki, and brown are recommended as they blend in with the desert environment and keep you cool. Bright colours and patterns can attract unwanted attention and increase heat absorption.

By following these dress code guidelines, you can have a comfortable and memorable Dubai desert safari experience.

The next step is what to wear or  what do people wear in the desert ; there are so many options like wearing a jumpsuit, causal cotton pants, Loose or stretchy pants, or even leggings, Bermuda Shorts, Or high-rise long shorts.

The shorts idea is best for summer. But during winter, “November to February the weather gets cold in the middle of the desert after sunset and early morning.

For the tops, I will recommend at least half sleeve shirts. Half sleeve shirts work in both winter & summer as you have to follow the rules of the UAE dress code. So if you are wearing a jumpsuit, wear a blouse on it. So here our dress issue gets resolved; now come to the point, wear sneakers, sandals, or flip-flops. According to our experience, sandals and flip-flop are the best options. If you wear sneakers, you will be bringing a lot of sand back to the hotel as a souvenir. As well as you get irritated while removing sand from your sneakers as your feet remain in the sand all the time during your desert trip.

Outfit for Camel Ride

Camel ride in the Dubai desert  is one the most demanding and thrilling activities; wear some stretchable clothes if you go for a  camel trekking tour , which is around 30 minutes. Bring a  scarf , wear your  shades , and must use  sunscreen . The best way to protect yourself from sunburns during a camel ride is by covering yourself with sunscreen. Wearing clothes with zipper pockets can help keep your belongings secure and prevent them from falling out during the camel ride.
  • A scarf or tight-fitting cap or hat:  A scarf or cap can help protect your head and neck from the sun and wind and keep your hair out of your face. We recommend using a scarf so you can cover your nose and mouth. It helps to stop the sand from entering your mouth.
  • Sunscreen:  It is important to protect your skin from the intense sun in Dubai, so make sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF before your camel ride.
  • Sunglasses:  Sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun and also the blowing sand.
  • Moisturizer:  The desert air can be very dry, so applying moisturizer will help keep your skin hydrated.

Wear something somewhat loose-fitted, so they’re comfortable to be in. As you have to sit in a land cruiser for at least an hour, you have to enjoy a camel ride, sandboarding, and quad biking. You can also buy an Arabian headscarf from the desert.

A final thought about what to wear during the desert tour, A  hoodie or a bulky pullover , half-sleeved tops & comfortable trousers, bring  Sunglasses ,  Hat & Light Shawl  use  Sunscreen  and  Lip balm  during camel ride and quad biking and at end wear sandals or flip-flops. The Perfect Footwear for Dubai's Desert Safaris

The Importance of Proper Footwear  Wandering the vast expanse of the desert isn’t just about gazing at the horizon; it’s about doing it right.

  • Selecting the perfect shoe can make a world of difference. Picture this: you’re trudging through fine sand, with each step sinking you deeper. If you’re not wearing the right shoes, this picturesque journey can quickly become uncomfortable.
  • The desert may seem benign, but it hides many challenges – the searing heat of the midday sun or the surprisingly chilly nights. Proper footwear ensures you’re ready for these unpredictable shifts, protecting your feet from potential injuries and burns.

Understanding the Desert Terrain

  • Ever tried walking on a beach? Now, imagine that with shifting dunes that make each step a mini workout. The desert is unpredictable, and your shoes must rise to the occasion.
  • For the uninitiated, deserts can be full of surprises. While the days are hot and might make you want to throw on some sandals, nights can get cold, warranting sturdier footwear.

Best Footwear Choices

  • While the temptation to slip into sandals is real, closed shoes offer more protection against the desert’s challenges. They guard against hot sands and unexpected critters, protecting your feet.
  • Ever heard the saying, “It’s not about the shoe, but the material”? Okay, maybe that’s not an actual saying, but breathable materials make a significant difference in the desert. They allow your feet to breathe, reducing sweating and discomfort.
  • Sandals may offer ease, but sneakers win in the protection department. However, particular specialized sandals, designed for desert terrains could be a middle ground. Weigh the pros and cons based on your desert safari’s planned activities.

Specialized Desert Boots

  • Purpose-built for the desert, these boots offer maximum protection. They’re every desert adventurer’s dream, from their high ankle support to the heat-resistant material.
  • Several renowned brands, such as  Timberland  and Merrell, offer specialized desert boots. Depending on your budget and requirements, you can find a boot that’s perfect for you.

Desert Safari Activities & Footwear

Embarking on a desert safari promises many unique activities, each with its own challenges and requirements. With every thrilling activity, from dune bashing to horse riding, ensuring that your feet are clad in the best possible footwear tailored to the adventure you’re diving into is vital. Let’s explore the world of shoes for each of these exciting desert escapades.

1. Dune Bashing and Shoes

This exhilarating activity involves driving aggressively over dunes; the right shoes can make all the difference.

Footwear Recommendations:  Opt for shoes that offer excellent grip, ensuring that your feet remain firmly anchored even if the vehicle sways and rocks. Sneakers with a rubber sole or hiking boots are ideal for this activity. Breathability is a plus, as it can get entirely heated inside the vehicle.

2. Footwear For Camel Riding

A desert safari is incomplete without the iconic camel ride.

Footwear Recommendations:  Stability is the name of the game here. Shoes with a firm grip will help you remain steady atop these majestic creatures. Ankle boots or lace-up shoes are preferred as they prevent sand from entering and offer a snug fit, which is crucial when high up on a camel’s back.

3. Footwear For Sandboarding

Imagine snowboarding but on golden dunes!

Footwear Recommendations:  For sandboarding, traction is crucial. Opt for shoes that provide a good grip to prevent slips and falls. High ankle sneakers or boots with deep treads are suitable for this adrenaline-pumping activity.

4. Footwear for Quad Riding in the Desert

Quad bikes offer a thrilling way to explore the vast desert landscape.

Footwear Recommendations:  Shoes that offer protection against the heat, sand, and potential debris kicked up by the bike are essential. Closed-toe, sturdy shoes like hiking boots or specialized biking shoes are the top choices. They not only provide the necessary grip on the quad’s footrests but also ensure your feet are shielded from the elements.

5. Dune Buggy Ride Footwear

Dune buggies provide a unique experience of conquering the desert terrains.

Footwear Recommendations:  For dune buggy rides, look for shoes that grant stability and comfort. Closed shoes with a snug fit, such as sports sneakers, will prevent sand from entering and ensure a firm grip on the buggy’s pedals.

6. Footwear for Dirt Biking in the Desert

Dirt biking is a heart-pounding activity that requires the utmost precision.

Footwear Recommendations:  Specialized dirt biking boots are your best bet. They’re designed to offer maximum protection from impacts, are heat resistant, and provide excellent grip on the bike’s pedals. If you don’t have access to these, at the very least, wear high ankle boots to protect against potential sprains and injuries.

7. Horse Riding Footwear

Riding boots are the classic choice for this activity. They offer protection against chafing from the saddle and ensure your feet sit securely in the stirrups. In their absence, go for closed, calf-length boots with a slight heel to prevent your foot from sliding through the stirrup.

8. Desert Walk Footwear

Walking in the desert is a meditative experience, allowing you to connect with nature.

Footwear Recommendations:  Comfort is paramount here. Choose lightweight, breathable shoes, preferably with a mid or high ankle to prevent sand ingress. Trail shoes or desert walking boots with a good grip and support are ideal.

hese varied desert activities require different types of footwear, but the common thread is the need for protection, comfort, and grip. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of UAE (United Arab Emirates) and it’s known as the city that never sleeps because there are over 200 active construction projects; many famous landmarks; vibrant nightlife; the oldest indoor ski center; biggest shopping mall which covers an area of 48 hectares (118 acres). It is also unique with its modern architecture like Burj Khalifa (829,8m) which is currently the world’s tallest building.

Emirate of Dubai attracts tourists worldwide due to its tropical beaches, luxury hotels, and sightseeing locations. Therefore, the desert safari is another great way to explore this metropolis.

Desert Safari Dubai is one of the most popular activities in the UAE. There are several companies that offer tours for travelers visiting Dubai city and desert safari in Dubai. This activity includes watching sunset or sunrise, dune bashing, barbecue dinner or lunch, belly dance and live music and camel ride, and other unique entertainment programs.

In this article, we will explain what to wear in Dubai Desert safari for a safe and comfortable tour.

It doesn’t matter if it’s hot outside because there is always a cold breeze coming from climate control air conditions of the desert safari 4X4 jeep. But don’t forget to bring sunscreen lotion because you will be under the sun for sure during sunset or sunrise which are popular times for taking pictures while visiting the Dubai desert.

Also, it’s appropriate to dress up casually because what kind of clothing people wear in African countries can be seen in Hollywood movies or documentaries? What are they wearing? You know better than me! Think about it and what you’re going to wear when watching a desert safari in Dubai.

And lastly, Arab men wear ‘thobes’ (white long gowns with long sleeves) but I recommend tourists not to wear this clothing because it is suitable attire only for Arab men.

If you are not sure what to wear in desert safari Dubai, ask your tour guide or someone around you who has already done this kind of activity before. We suggest you wear a modest, comfortable, and casual dress for the desert safari. Anyway, if it’s your first time I’m sure you will have a lot of fun!

To include, desert safari Dubai is the best choice for tourists looking for fun and entertainment with friends, family, or loved ones. There are so many things to do besides sightseeing if you want to explore the beauty of this metropolis which is situated on the Arabian Peninsula.

Dubai Dress Code Explained: What to Wear in Dubai as a Tourist

Deciphering the Dubai dress code and what’s appropriate to pack for your trip to Dubai

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country but not as conservative as other parts of the Middle East and Central Asia when it comes to dress code expected of tourists.

That said, there are still minimum standards expected of tourists, and the dress code can vary depending on what situation you are in. Public places like the shopping mall , souks , government buildings, or a museum are treated quite differently from a resort or water park .

Whilst it’s important to dress for the warm desert climate, always bear your setting and what is culturally respectable in mind.

Dubai dress code: dressing for religion and the heat in dubai.

Although daytime temperatures throughout the year range from warm to very hot to scorching, you must remember at all times, you are in a Muslim country. It is possible to dress in a conservative manner that deals with the weather but remains respectful of local culture.

There are a few basic rules tourists should look to observe:

  • Aim to cover shoulders and knees
  • Avoid showing midriffs and cleavage
  • Avoid anything transparent or overly clingy
  • If someone does ask you to cover up – do so without protest

Yes, you will also hear conflicting advice in travel forums telling you to wear whatever you want, Dubai is so liberal etc, etc. Please don’t be that tourist!

Things such as the acceptance of western clothing have definitely evolved over the last 20 years as the city has considerably opened up to tourism. However, Islamic cultural roots in the city still run deep.

Just because you see someone else wearings something skimpier than you doesn’t make it OK! Show some respect to your hosts.

You will see that most local Emiratis and a large proportion of the expats in Dubai hailing from other GCC countries dress in a traditional regional outfit.

For men in Dubai, this is:

  • A long white kandora or dishdasha (you can see all the regional variations explained here !)
  • Ghutrah (headpiece) secured by a black igal (agal/egal as you please!)

dubai desert safari what to wear

For women in Dubai, this is:

  • A long black abaya
  • Black Shayla (head covering)
  • Very occasionally, you will still see some women with a metal burqa, but this is uncommon. Full niqabs or burkhas are extremely uncommon
  • Other colours are, of course, permitted, but local women will almost always be seen in public only in black

Dubai Dress Code For Women: What to Wear in Dubai as a Woman

Non-Muslim female visitors are by no means expected to dress in the same manner as local women nor have their heads covered at all, with some limited exceptions:

  • For women, carrying a shawl or pashmina with you is always a good idea to cover up if you feel awkward – and for a bit of sun and dust protection!
  • If you are entering the Grand Mosque  or any religious or government building, you will need to buy or hire a full-length abaya and cover your head.
  • Linen trousers, long shorts/cargos, and clothing made from natural fibers will be your best choices in the high temperatures of Dubai.
  • Women can wear leggings under a dress , a great solution if your dress is a little short, but avoid tight, revealing bottoms and showing too much cleavage.
  • Cut-off shorts, midriff tops, and spaghetti straps or strappy tops should be considered wardrobe no-gos for Dubai.
  • Maxi dresses or a maxi skirt are a great choice for ladies – day and night – (but we’d warn ladies to be aware of sweating and chaffing if wearing skirts/dresses! Try some anti-chaffing biker shorts underneath).
  • Sleeveless tops are acceptable in most situations where only your arms are shown.
  • Shorts that completely cover the bottom are acceptable now in most situations.

Dubai Dress Code for Men: What Should Men Wear Visiting Dubai?

  • For men, you will find that despite the heat, nearly all gents in Dubai wear full-length trousers.
  • Bringing some light chinos is a good idea for public places, or if wearing shorts, try and make them knee-length.
  • Avoid tank tops (other than at the beach/water parks) and be careful with the wording on any slogan t-shirts; wear nothing that could be construed as offensive.
The best thing to bear in mind is, “am I dressed with modesty?” If in doubt, a helpful hotel concierge may be able to guide you.

Dubai Dress Code: What Should I Wear to the Beach in Dubai?

You will see huge variations in what is considered appropriate at the beach and resort wear. For men, longer shorts are much preferred to skimpy brief-style Speedos – though I bet you’ll see plenty of budgie smugglers these days.

For ladies, where do we start?! It can be a minefield, and these days, there are very differing views on just how liberal attitudes are in Dubai in the 2020s. How much skin is too much skin? And on what parts of the body?!

You will see many Muslim women prefer to wear a full-length burkini by the water. Whilst at the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s not unusual at all to see extremely skimpy two-piece bikinis at exclusive beach clubs . Being topless is still a strict no-no.

dubai desert safari what to wear

For modesty, we would suggest something in between that you feel comfortable in. Anything scanty, and yes, you will get stared at. But also be respectful of your setting; If there are lots of families about, it’s not appropriate to have everything on display. Whereas in an adults-only beach bar, you may find almost anything, except being outright naked, might be acceptable.

It is very important to note when NOT at the beach or pool areas, cover up! This includes the public areas of your hotel or resort or if you are going into a restaurant. No full abaya is necessary, but it’s recommended ladies have an overshirt or dress pulled on top . For men, wearing any sort of top covering your bare chest is appropriate.

Public beaches will each have their own rules. At Jumeirah Beach, for example, they ask that women be fully covered, ie, you must have a sun top or rashguard on over your bathers. Not a bad idea in the sun anyway, but this may come as a surprise if you are used to how liberal the rules are in resorts. In other places like The Beach, JBR the rules are more relaxed.

If you are asked by security to cover up a little, do so without argument. Security officers are well within their right to call the police if you do not cooperate or become abusive – remember this is a big no-no in Dubai .

Dubai Dress Code: What Do I Wear in the Desert in Dubai?

A desert safari is one of the most popular excursions to undertake in Dubai . It does, however, raise questions about how to dress appropriately. You have not only heat and sand to contend with but desert activities which may involve bouncing about, riding camels, or taking on the dunes.

We would suggest wearing breathable natural materials to cope with the heat and sweat, but long shorts or long trousers are more appropriate for ladies than a long flowing dress, as pretty as it may look in photos.

  • We have a complete guide over here on how to dress appropriately for a Dubai Desert Safari .

Dubai Dress Code: What are children expected to wear in Dubai?

Prepubescent children should feel free to dress as they please, but teenagers have the same dress requirements as adults outlined above; this should be judged on their maturity rather than age alone.

You will notice that local children are dressed pretty much from head to toe, whatever the weather. The traditional local dress is normally reserved for religious occasions and special events for kids. However, even in the summer, Emirati children tend to be dressed in long clothing.

Visiting children are by no means obliged to do so and should dress for the weather. Dresses, shorts, or skirts on girls is absolutely fine (though if they are doing adventurous activities, as in any situation, leggings or tights underneath a dress or skirt might be a good idea).

Some more frequently asked clothing questions for Dubai

Non-Muslim women are not expected to have their hair covered. You will only want a head covering if going into a religious building and some Government buildings.

Yes, it is acceptable in a beach or resort setting to wear a bikini. See our advice above though about appropriate settings for wearing a bikini in Dubai.

Yes, there’s a time and a place for your short shorts (within a resort/beach club or private setting), and times when you should wear full trousers or a long skirt/leg covering. On most occasions, you should dress for the heat, and shorts are acceptable. Try to keep them at least mid-thigh length or longer out of respect in public places.

Yes, in most situations, it is OK to wear figure-hugging leggings in Dubai. We would suggest it’s appropriate to wear a long top to cover your bottom in some public settings, though not essential. Many ladies wearing shorter dresses or skirts like to wear leggings underneath. Leggings may also be appropriate winter wear if you are heading out to the mountains or desert and taking on strenuous outdoor activities.

Yes, in most situations, skinny jeans, like leggings, are absolutely fine. The only place this may not be appropriate is a religious building. We would suggest ladies place an abaya on top of their outfits. These are inexpensive to pick up at one of the souks and will make a great souvenir from your Middle East vacation.

For the most part, yes. However, the jury is still out on when and where this is appropriate. You will find for men, the rules are quite strict; you should pretty much only be wearing sleeveless tops at the beach. It’s not appropriate for men to wear a tank top at the mall, souks, museums, or religious buildings. Likewise, it will be against most restaurants and bars’ dress policies for men not to have shirt sleeves. For women, there’s a little more leniency in sleeveless tops. You will see it’s against the rules published on most shopping mall doors, but it’s rarely enforced. Same with going out to a restaurant; only if a strict dress code is published or in religious buildings would you strictly be prohibited entry if your clothing is seen as too skimpy on your shoulders. As a precautionary measure, it never hurts to bring a cardigan or pashmina/wrap with you if you feel uncomfortable or are asked to cover up.

In the right place, yes. We’d keep anything that reveals your midriff only for the beach. In shopping malls, such as Dubai Mall , and many other public buildings, this is against the published rules and may draw unwanted attention. It would be a strict no in museums and religious buildings. On a desert safari, you’re pushing your luck too!

We’d urge you to think about the situation before wearing a very short dress in Dubai. At a nightclub , fancy weekend brunch, or night out with the ladies, yes, a short dress would be acceptable. A short dress is not appropriate in a shopping mall (though you’ll see them!), mosque, or souk. Your underwear should not be visible if you bend in any way. And even in appropriate settings, think about how you’re getting to and from the venue when making your wardrobe choices.

Of course! Open footwear is the norm and acceptable pretty much everywhere. You may want something a little more dressy for dining out; all but the finest of establishments will let you in with flip-flops of any quality and variety!

If you’re visiting over the coolest months, December to February, you are likely going to want some warmer clothing for the early mornings and evenings – though visiting from any cooler country, you may not think the winters are too cold! Overnight in the desert or mountains though, you will definitely notice it.

If you’re heading to Abu Dhabi on your trip to the UAE, a very similar dress code applies to Dubai. As your trip is likely to involve stops at places such as the Grand Mosque, the Louvre, and Qasr al Watan , the presidential palace, a more conservative dress standard will be expected. There are very specific dress code standards for the Grand Mosque that should be followed, whilst other buildings ask for a respectful standard – this means knees and shoulders covered as a rule of thumb. Alternatively, if you’re taking a trip to the Yas Island theme parks , bathers are appropriate for Yas Waterworld, but you’ll want to be covered up for your journey. Ferrari World and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, you’ll need to be out of your swimwear and wearing something appropriate for high-speed rides. We thoroughly explain the Abu Dhabi dress code over here .

Dubai Mall, and any mall in Dubai, is considered a public place, so a respectful level of dress is required – we explain this in a lot more detail for Dubai Mall over here .

Desert Safari Dubai

Heading out on a thrilling desert safari adventure in Dubai? If so, the first question that probably comes to mind is, What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari ? You’ll want to dress appropriately for this exciting excursion into the Arabian Desert. The desert climate can get extremely hot during the day and surprisingly chilly at night. Dressing in lightweight, breathable fabrics that cover your skin from the blazing sun yet provide warmth after dark is key. Are you ready to find out what to wear in a Dubai desert safari for a memorable safari adventure? Read on for tips on putting together the perfect desert-ready ensemble.

The Most Important Factor: Cover Up and Block the Sun

what to wear in dubai desert safari

The Arabian Desert receives intense sunshine with UV indexes frequently off the charts. It’s important to protect your skin. Loose lightweight pants, a lightweight long-sleeve shirt or jacket, and closed-toe shoes are musts. Favor light cotton, linens, and moisture-wicking performance fabrics over heavy materials that could become stifling. Neutral tans, khakis, and lightweight denim are ideal choices.

Avoid flimsy synthetic fabrics that could tear on rugged terrain. Sturdy fabrics that won’t snag on truck seats are best. Ditch the short shorts, tank tops, flimsy dresses, and open-toe flimsy sandals. The desert is no place for flimsy fashion statements. Desert-worthy styles fully cover and protect. If you’ll be riding ATVs, dune bashing, or camel riding, wear clothes you don’t mind getting dusty or dirty.

Choosing the Right Fabrics

how to book desert safari dubai

Focus on natural fibers and fabrics when selecting attire for the desert. Materials like cotton, linen, wool, and silk will be the most comfortable in the hot, arid climate. They breathe well and soak up perspiration. Synthetics tend to get hot, clingy, and uncomfortable when you sweat.

Lightweight cottons in pops of color are fun yet practical for desert safaris . Try a breezy cotton maxi dress or loose cotton pants paired with a bright cotton tee. Linen pants and shirts keep you cool while providing durability and protection.

For extra warmth, merino wool is an excellent natural choice. It regulates body temperature in both hot and cold conditions. A lightweight merino cardigan, sweater, or shawl adds warmth after sunset without overheating you during the day. Fabric weight matters too. Heavier fabrics get bogged down in heat while sheer flimsy ones won’t hold up to the desert terrain. Lightweight to medium-weight natural fabrics around 4-9 oz offer the best blend of protection and comfort.

Shield Your Eyes, Head and Neck

Sunglasses are a necessity in the desert, ideally with UV protection and polarization to cut glare. Visors, hats with wide brims, or head scarves like traditional shemagh provide relief from the harsh rays. Drapey lightweight cotton scarves around the neck give protection without added warmth.

For Women: Pick Flowing Fabrics

arabian desert safari dubai

Lightweight maxi dresses and skirts in breezy fabrics are perfect for desert safaris . Pair with a long-sleeved lightweight top for coverage and warmth when the sun goes down. Long flowy pants made of lightweight fabrics like rayon or linen paired with a cotton tee shirt on top work well too. For a more conservative dress, harem pants with a matching long tunic top are ideal. Leave short shorts and mini skirts behind and opt for ankle-length maxis.

For coverage when riding ATVs or dune bashing, wear leggings or yoga pants under your dress or long skirt. You’ll want your legs protected from flying sand. Bring a large cotton scarf or pashmina to use as an impromptu head covering if you need more protection from sand, wind, and sun.

For Men: Go Lightweight Too

Lightweight, light-colored linen or cotton pants are perfect for men, paired with long-sleeved cotton or moisture-wicking shirts. Neutral shirts that won’t show dirt will stay looking fresher longer. A versatile cotton utility jacket works for cooler evenings. Sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking shoes stand up to desert terrain better than flimsy footwear.

Leave the heavy jeans behind and opt for lighter harem pants if you prefer a loose fit. Shorts don’t provide adequate coverage or protection for a desert safari. Long lightweight pants are called for. Pack a cotton scarf that can be wet and worn around the neck for portable evaporative cooling when the temperatures soar.

Sun Protection Essentials

sahara tour dubai

Don’t forget the sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats when prepping for a desert safari ! The desert sun is intense, with UV indexes frequently at their maximum levels. Sunburns and sun damage can occur quickly without proper protection.

Slather on a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen. Reapply often, especially if swimming or sweating. Wear wide-brimmed hats and caps to shield the face, ears, and neck. Baseball caps only protect the front so opt for all-around coverage.

Invest in good polarized sunglasses to cut glare without distorting colors. Look for UV protection too. Choose strapbacks or opt for a neck cord so your shades don’t blow away in desert winds.

The desert air is extremely dry. You’ll need to drink far more water than you normally would to avoid dehydration. Make sure to bring a large water bottle and refill it frequently during your safari. Drinks with electrolytes replace salts lost through sweating.

Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks which have dehydrating effects. Water, electrolyte drinks, and diluted juices are best. You want to replenish fluids, not lose more through the diuretic effects of alcohol, caffeine, or sugar.

As Evening Approaches, Add Layers

safari camp dubai

Desert temperatures drop dramatically after sunset, sometimes plummeting as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. What felt hot during the day will become chilly at night. Packing extra layers is key for comfort and warmth.

For women, bring a wool pashmina shawl, sweater, or lightweight jacket. A versatile cotton hoodie layers well over dresses. For men, a lightweight fleece or sweatshirt layers nicely over a tee. Wool blend travel blazers add warmth without weight. A lightweight down vest provides cozy insulation without bulk.

The desert air can feel quite brisk after sundown so an extra layer is crucial. Having to wrap up in just a flimsy cotton scarf would quickly get uncomfortable. A proper lightweight jacket, sweater, or hoodie ensures you’ll stay nice and cozy by the campfire under the starry desert skies.

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari: Don’t Forget the Accessories

  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes – flimsy flip flops spell disaster in the desert. Low-profile hiking shoes, riding boots, or athletic shoes work well.
  • Socks – protect feet and ankles from irritation in shoes. Breathable moisture-wicking varieties keep feet comfortable in the heat.
  • Bandana or shemagh – can be soaked in water and worn around the neck or head for natural cooling relief.
  • Waterproof sunscreen and lip balm – Sunscreen is essential to protect against harmful UV rays. Use a lip balm with SPF to prevent sunburn and dryness.
  • Extra hair ties – windswept tangles happen in the desert.
  • Water bottle – stay hydrated in the dry desert conditions.
  • Portable battery charger – keep devices powered up for photos out in the desert.
  • Plastic bags – keeps valuables like phones protected from sand and moisture.
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes – clean hands after activities before eating.

With the proper information about what to wear in Dubai desert safari , you’ll be ready to take on any desert activity in comfort. Avoid flimsy fashion choices prone to rips, tears, or exposure to the harsh desert elements. Stick to durable, protective fabrics and closed toe footwear and your Dubai desert safari experience will be that much more enjoyable. Don’t let worries about your clothes distract you from soaking up the magnificent desert scenery. Follow these tips so your attire enhances rather than detracts from desert adventuring.

Skincare Tips for Post-Dubai Desert Safari

As we already know about what to wear in Dubai desert safari , now it’s the time to dive into this mesmerizing safari adventure. But after this adventurous trip, all you need to know a post-safari skincare tips for your lovely skin. Follow these post-safari skincare tips to regain your flawless beauty:

  • Remove Sand and Dirt – Once back from the desert, wash your face and body to remove all traces of sand, dirt and grime. Take a warm shower or use cleansing wipes. Be gentle when scrubbing caked-on dirt as harsh rubbing can irritate skin.
  • Apply a Soothing Face Mask – The desert climate can leave skin feeling dry and parched. Replenish moisture with a hydrating face mask after cleaning skin. Look for soothing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil or shea butter. Leave on for 10-15 minutes then rinse.
  • Moisturize from Head to Toe – Smooth on body lotion and facial moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp after cleansing. The desert air strips moisture; replenishing it is key. Hydrating body lotions containing shea butter, vitamin E or plant oils are ideal.
  • Use a Lip Scrub and Balm – Dry, chapped lips are common post-safari. Gently exfoliate with a lip scrub to rid flakes and soothe irritation. Follow with a rich lip balm or mask to deeply moisturize. Reapply liberally and often.
  • Don’t Forget Eye Cream – The sensitive skin around the eyes prone to dryness. Gently tap in a nourishing eye cream morning and night. Look for hydrating ingredients like vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and ceramides.
  • Treat Sunburns – If you’ve got a burn, take a cool bath and apply aloe vera gel liberally. Anti-inflammatory oils like lavender and chamomile also soothe. Ibuprofen reduces swelling and discomfort. Seek medical treatment for severe burns.
  • Stay Hydrated – Keep drinking extra water post-safari. Hydration combats irritation and helps restore supple skin. Infuse water with berry, citrus or cucumber slices for moisture-boosting flavor and nutrients.
  • Get More Rest – Your body works hard to combat desert dehydration. Recharge with extra sleep after an active safari day. Skin repairs itself at night so rest is a beauty essential.

With tender loving care, you’ll have your skin glowing again in no time after a fun but harsh desert escape. Follow these tips to undo damage and irritation so you can look and feel refreshed until your next Arabian adventure!

So you’re getting ready for a desert tour and not sure what to wear on the desert safari tour? Though Dubai is significantly tolerant about female outfits, in spite it’s a part of Muslim country and also have some restrictions when it comes to outside.   Regarding temperature, during the day time in the hot season (May-October), temperature in Dubai desert fluctuates between 35 C to 50 C while in summer it keeps rolling around 25 C. On the other hand, at night the climate in the desert becomes a bit chilly. Apart from that, desert safari tours are offered in three different versions, morning, an evening desert safari tour and overnight desert safari. Most likely you’ve booked an evening desert tour. So, the major part of this post is about the evening safari tour. Before going on a trip, go through my detailed post to figure out desert safari outfits.

Table of Contents

Dubai Desert Outfit During Winter

Considering it as a desert city, most people think Dubai is ALWAYS hot. Frankly, it isn’t accurate. During the winter season, the temperature in Dubai is usually pleasant. In fact in recent years, during winter rain has happened in Dubai. Therefore, you’ve to keep an eye out for weather if you go to the Dubai desert in winter.  Occasionally, when you are travelling to the Dubai desert in the evening during winter months, you should definitely wear an extended pants/long skirt and also it’s advisable to carry a light jacket since the desert temperature in the evening after sunset goes down.

Female Desert Safari Outfit for winter

Dubai Desert Outfit During Summer

Despite sweltering weather conditions, a great number of tourists are visiting Dubai. When choosing a dress for desert safari in summer, Don’t forget that summer months in Dubai are scorching. To guide you, I’d suggest wearing a simple cotton shirt combined with breathable cargo pants etc. Even though dark colorful dresses seem to be a good choice for the pictures, to beat the heat, light-colored clothing is most appropriate to wear.If you want to miss spectacular desert photos, wearing outfits with a vibrant pattern or shade to contrast against the sandy background could help you in capturing great photos. On top of that, To protect your face against sun rays, you can carry a baseball cap with you.

If you’re going to overnight desert safari, bear in mind temperature can dramatically change from evening to late night. So ensure to carry a light jacket or fleece.

If a man accompanies you, he should wear shorts or light and comfortable trousers or jeans with a t-shirt or cotton shirt.

Dressing for Cultural

First, I want to point out that Dubai is known as a multicultural city because it’s population is composed of over 85% expats including the Pakistani, Indian subcontinent, African, Southeast region, West and Middle East. However, When selecting what to wear on a desert trip, aside from your ease and comfort zone, you need to respect the local UAE culture as well. Considering other Middle Eastern cities, Dubai is extremely generous when it comes to female dress code, yet, it’s advisable to dress conservatively, covering your shoulders and knees at least. Casual pencil dress with a belt would be an ideal dress to wear in Dubai.

What Shoes Should You Wear?

Putting on walking sandals may not be a great idea when going on a desert trip in Dubai. Better you carry close-toed shoes with you for walking in the desert sand. In winter, Light joggers and sneakers are also great options for desert adventure activities.

Additional Desert Safari Packing

  • Getting sunburned in the Dubai desert is not fun in any way. So ensure to carry a good sunscreen lotion and glasses as well.
  • If you’re staying overnight in the desert, make sure you carry your mobile phone chargers. Aside if you’re kind of allergic, carry your own towels and travel soap as well. You can also bring your own night dress. Remember, at night the temperature drops down in the desert. So, carry a warm dress

Evening Desert Safari Activities

Evening Dubai desert safari trip comes with a diverse variety of activities for its visitors. If you have no idea what those activities are, stick with me.

  • Dune Bashing

When it comes to dune bashing in desert safari, there is no way you miss it unless you’re pregnant or have backbone issues. Dune bashing is actually the zaniest and the most daring activity in desert safari where a vehicle is driven over a sand dune with escalating and reducing speeds. To do so, you need special driving skills along with a special vehicle. Normally a sports utility vehicle (SUV) used to carry out dune bashing. It’s not a necessity, but if you’re a female, consider being dressed in a  well supported shirt since you’ll get thrown around in the car.

  • Camel Riding

Riding on a camel in the desert is a dream for many of us. It’s evidently an exciting activity for many tourists. If you’ve no idea what to wear when going for the camel ride, In my opinion, loose, long sleeves clothes and non-slip loose trousers/pants would be good outfitted for camel rides. If you’re taking the came riding trip in Dubai during the summer, light-weight and light-coloured clothing would be the right ones.

  • Sand boarding

It might be a completely new term in case you have never been on a desert safari trip before. Similar to snowboarding, Sandboarding is an activity that involves slipping down the slopes of a desert dune with exclusively designed boards fastened to your feet. Again, for this you are also suggested to wear loose trousers.

  • BBQ Dinner & Entertainment

Aside from previously mentioned activities, you’ll also enjoy barbecue dinners under the stars, watch live entertainment shows like tanoura show, belly dance and fireshow etc during evening and overnight desert safari trips.

  •  Photography

No matter which desert safari trip you’re going with, you’ll have an opportunity to get some amazing photoshoots with falcons. Most desert safari tour operators offer UAE national dress for photoshoot. If it attracts you, you can give it a try.

  • Quad Biking

Most of the time, quad biking isn’t included in desert safari  basic trips. It’s an optional activity. Quad bike riding in the Dubai desert is truly an activity packed with adventure and excitement. If you wish to experience a full scale desert safari trip with full scale,  I encourage you to book quad biking with your desert safari Dubai tour.

Where to Book Desert Safari?

Since desert safari is considered to be a must to do activity in Dubai, there are countless tour operators that offer desert safari tours. However, I personally went with this tour operator . You can read my detailed  desert safari trip review over here .

  • A Liwa Desert Safari: What To Know Before You Go

I f you are headed to United Arab Emirates, you absolutely cannot miss the opportunity to join a Liwa Desert safari. It is a bucket list experience that you can’t miss! After countless visits to the Liwa Oasis, I’m passing on some firsthand knowledge on what to know before you go. Here is how to plan for a desert safari in Liwa!

If you are planning a trip to the United Arab Emirates , then you have likely heard of the popular sunset and dinner safaris offered in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

These tours are offered year-round throughout the country, and they are quite easy to book . Hotels offer them, airlines offer them – heck, just about every tour operator in UAE will offer them.

While these local safaris are nice, and give a small taste of the desert atmosphere along with dinner and a show, they don’t hold a candle to Liwa.

A Liwa desert safari will take you deep into the true Arabian Desert, many miles away from civilization. Near the Saudi border, you will get a true sense of just how vast this landscape is.

The thing is, Liwa is not easy to get to. It is a full day commitment and requires an expert driver. And, in some cases, it can be tricky to book.

Below I will dive into what is so special about a Liwa desert safari, as well as when to go and how to book.

I’ll also be passing on secrets like what to wear and where to stay if you choose to extend your time in Liwa.

Let’s get into it!

Where Is Liwa?

Liwa is an area that sits on the Saudi Border, on the southernmost end of the UAE. It sits within the emirate of Abu Dhabi and is a great place to visit from the capital city.

What Is the Liwa Oasis?

The Liwa Oasis is a large area far removed from Abu Dhabi and Dubai , reachable via desert roads and dunes.

It lies at the northern edge of the Rub’ Al Khali Desert (also known as the Empty Quarter) which is the world’s largest uninterrupted desert.

In this area, past the endless swaths of sand, you will find inhabited villages, camel farms and date farms, and even small shops and stores. There are also a few hotels, which we will go into below.

Liwa Oasis truly is an oasis in the desert, and was the ancestral home of the Bani Yas Tribe. They were the largest and most significant tribe in the UAE.

Liwa Oasis covers a large area of natural, underground freshwater supplies. This water is what makes large date farms in the desert possible. Because of this water source, Liwa is one of the top date producers in all of UAE.

Liwa Oasis is the main economic zone of Liwa. But to anyone used to the bigger cities in the UAE, it will feel small and quaint.

Most tourists will never make it out to beautiful Liwa, and that is a shame. There is nothing quite like sleeping in the middle of the Rub Al Khali Desert.

Do people live in Liwa Oasis?

Today, people do still live in Liwa Oasis. What once would have been tribal land is now home to more than 20,000 inhabitants.

Most of these inhabitants are date farmers or tend to the camel farms in the area. Others run small shops, restaurants, or work in the hotels.

A Liwa Desert Safari: What to Know Before You Go

A Liwa Desert safari is a truly unforgettable experience – especially if you are able to book an overnight camping trip. The sky is so dark here, I’ve seen multiple shooting stars in the same night.

So let’s talk about how to book a Liwa Desert safari, what you will see and do, when to go to Liwa, and more.

What Is So Different About a Desert Safari in Liwa?

Firstly, Liwa will take you into the true heart of the Arabian Desert.

While the local dinner safaris can be a short 30 minutes drive into small patches of desert near Abu Dhabi or Dubai, Liwa is far .

Liwa sits approximately 4 hours from Dubai and 3 hours from Abu Dhabi. This can of course vary depending on exactly where you start and how deep into the desert you drive.

When you are driving within the dunes of Liwa, you can go for many miles without seeing another human. But in the deserts near the cities, you always have a sense that civilization is nearby.

What is Included on a Liwa Desert Safari?

This can vary slightly depending on the company you book through, and possibly the time of year. Additionally, you can book a Liwa Safari as a day trip, or as an overnight camping trip.

The general itinerary is as follows.

  • Morning pick up from your hotel in Abu Dhabi in a 4×4 vehicle.
  • A visit to The Emirates National Auto Museum, if the guests are interested. The museum showcases unusual cars and cars from the Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan.
  • Dune bashing across the giant sand dunes. Dune bashing is when your expert driver zooms up and down the sand dunes like a rollercoaster. It is a thrilling experience!
  • Photo stops along the way.
  • A picnic lunch at green Oasis.
  • Camel farm visits, if you are lucky.
  • A visit to Tal Moreeb Dune – a dune that towers more than 980 feet high.
  • A visit to the grand Qasr Al Sarab Hotel for sightseeing.
  • Drop off in Abu Dhabi before dinner.

Should you book an overnight safari in Liwa, it also includes camping in the desert.

More details on the places you’ll visit:

  • The Emirates National Auto Museum – While I could generally take or leave a car museum, this one is memorable! From the very start, you will see gargantuan vehicles with wheels taller than a human. The museum also holds Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan’s seven rainbow colored Mercedes inside.
  • The Camel Farms – The camel farms are so interesting to visit because they are not there to be “just” a tourist stop. These are working farms in the middle of nowhere, built for camel breeding or camel milk. You’ll get to meet these cool creatures face to face and learn more about their nature.
  • Tal Moreeb – Moreeb Dune is a special place for me. It is the tallest sand dune in the UAE at 5,250 feet long and 984 feet high. The incredible 50 degree slope makes it difficult to climb, and extremely so in the summer heat. But if you make it to the top you will be rewarded with wonderful views!
  • Qasr al Sarab – Though it may sound strange to stop at a hotel on your desert safari, this hotel is worth the visit. It is considered the height of luxury in Liwa, and it even showcases interesting artifacts as you roam the halls. Not to mention, a nice break to stretch your legs can’t be beat.

Visiting Liwa as a solo female.

“Rub al Khali” or The Empty Quarter is the entire reason I first visited the UAE. I had read about it growing up, and I always wanted to see it for myself.

Most people come here for the glitz of Dubai, but not me. I planned a visit primarily to go to the Liwa Desert.

I was visiting the UAE as a solo female , and you should know that this made getting to Liwa admittedly more difficult.

Though outsiders picture Dubai as super modern and forward-thinking, it’s wise to note that traditional and conservative morals guide the way of life here. It is a beautiful aspect, but also a limiting one in my case.

Meaning, a solo male and a solo female should not be together if they’re not related or not married. In the case of Liwa, as all of the desert drivers are male, it took a lot of calls, emails, and persistence for weeks before the trip.

In the end, I did find a company that would take me into the desert solo. But, I can’t guarantee that will always be the case.

Can you self drive to Liwa?

For anyone familiar with my travels, you may be wondering why I didn’t try to rent a car and make this trip solo.

The answer is simple – my goal was to camp deep inside of the desert, near the Saudi border, after hours of driving on the actual sand dunes.

Driving on dunes rather than the roads requires a bit of special know-how. For example, deflating and inflating the tires to acceptable air levels is a must. Knowing exactly where you are when all of the dunes look the same to the untrained eye is a special skill.

People die in the Arabian Desert every year and getting lost is a real possibility. So it is not something to take lightly unless or until you really know what you are doing.

Nowadays, since befriending a local, I’ve had the wonderful luck to have camped in Liwa many times over now – and it never loses it’s charm.

What to Wear on a Liwa Desert Safari?

Ladies, the key here is to balance conservative dress with comfortability. No matter the season, I recommend wearing layers in Liwa.

It might surprise you, but even in the hot summer months, I usually wear long sleeves over a lightweight shirt and flowy pants.

This is both due to the conservative nature of the country as well as the added protection from the sun. Long sleeves and pants will actually keep you cooler by keeping those rays off of your skin.

While I have a full post on what to wear in Dubai , I will list out the specifics for a desert safari below.

A Long Flowy Dress

This is a gorgeous option for those Instagram-worthy desert pics. A long flowy dress on the dunes is nothing short of magical when the wind blows in. Get yours here!

A Loose Kimono

My number one go-to for the desert, a loose flowy kimono is ideal. It instantly makes any type of dress more modest as it covers you in flowing fabric. It also covers your waist and hips if you prefer fitted leggings, like me. Get yours here!

A Breathable Tank Top

I love that I can sneak a tank top under a kimono. It keeps me very cool but covered, at the same time. Moisture wicking or athletic tanks are best. Get yours here!

Comfortable Leggings

As I mentioned, tight leggings are okay when under a tunic or kimono. You can probably get away with them if your shirt if flowy enough, too. Opaque is a must. Get yours here!

Loose Palazzo Pants

Loose airy pants are absolutely wonderful for the desert! They keep you cool in the sun and comfy on the drive. Get yours here.

A Lightweight Scarf or Shawl

In the desert, a lightweight scarf is key. Thick fabrics feel heavy but lightweight fabrics don’t weigh you down. I own this one in multiple colors. Get yours here!

Strappy Sandals

These strappy sandals are my current fave as they can be dressed up or down. And they slip on and off easily if you want to walk barefoot in the sand. Get yours here!

A Wide Brim Hat

This exact wide brim hat has been across the world with me. It will keep you protected from the sun and it is fully adjustable in size. It is also packable and crushable. Get yours here!

Liwa at Night

If you are able to book an overnight camping safari, absolutely do it. Your night under the stars will be unforgettable, and the sunset and sunrise are indescribable.

I personally recommend spending more on an overnight safari and booking more budget-friendly hotels if you have to choose one splurge only.

Do’s and Dont’s of a Liwa Desert Safari

  • DO bring a high quality camera because the landscape is breathtaking. Bring a good case to cover the camera with when the wind picks up so the sand doesn’t scratch your lens.
  • DON’T be afraid of the camels in the desert! They are fascinating and will generally leave you alone while they live their camel-lives. They are also very fun to interact with on the farms.
  • DO let your driver know if you are feeling motion sickness from the dune bashing. You’d be surprised how commonly guests need to get out and throw up from the crazy driving, I’ve been told.
  • DON’T forget your sunny weather necessities – wide brim hat , sunglasses , scarf , and long sleeves .
  • DO find a quiet place to sit and take it all in. Be in the moment, soak it up. Liwa is an amazing place.
  • DON’T forget to tip. The drivers have to deposit the money you pay them to the company they are driving for. Tips are greatly appreciated after a full day of hard work across the desert.

Where To Stay In Liwa

I have stayed in just about every Liwa Hotel that has existed in the past decade and I am going to list the top three below.

1. Qasr Al Sarab

Qasr al Sarab is known as the best of the best in the desert. The grounds are luxurious, the staff is professional, and the rooms are to die for.

You can even book rooms with private pools overlooking the vast desert. Qasr al Sarab also offers desert excursions and meals on site.

2. Tilal Liwa

Tilal Liwa is a solid choice. Located on the other side from Qasr al Sarab, Tilal Liwa is continuously offering special packages and rates for holidays and such.

The pool is divine, and the breakfast spread is impressive. While certain details are beginning to need slight updating, this hotel holds a special place in my heart.

3. The Liwa Hotel

After a brief hiatus, Liwa Hotel is back! They appear to have upgraded during the 2020/2021 closures, and things are looking good here. It was a good option pre-remodel and I have a feeling it is even better now.

Of course you have a pool, comfy beds, and endless desert outside.

Final Thoughts on Liwa Desert

Liwa Desert is without a doubt one of my favorite places on the planet.

The solitude and peace I felt here is indescribable.

It also holds a special meaning for me since it was a place I’d dreamed of visiting ever since reading that book in my childhood. I guess I was always meant to be an explorer, even before I knew it myself.

If you ever get the chance to go to the United Arab Emirates, do not pass up the chance to visit Rub al Khali, my lovely Empty Quarter, and absolutely book your Liwa Desert Safari, NOW!
