The Elephant Rock is a basalt rock found on the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) in Iceland. Call us crazy, but we believe it to be a petrified mythical sea elephant. Though, scientists say that the rock is a result of a volcanic eruption. Board a boat and discover the truth for yourself!

Iceland’s Elephant Rock is an incredible rock formation found in the remote Westman Islands or Vestmannaeyjar. It is not one of those things that you need to ‘look just hard enough’ to see it but one of those sights that will have you completely astounded in a split of a second. In front of you is a petrified elephant and there is no denying it!

Iceland's Elephant Rock close up picture

To believe that the enormous rock was formed naturally is quite difficult, especially once you have been face to face with the giant elephant. But nevertheless, there are no records of an elephant ever stepping foot in Iceland so we best believe it.

The Westman Islands were formed in a series of volcanic eruptions occurring under sea level. This is quite common in Iceland and its surrounding areas as the island is located right at the split between two continental plates. Subsequently, there is rather a lot of earthquakes and eruptions happening and for the locals, this is just daily life.

The biggest of the Westman Islands is called Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the cluster. Right at the center of Heimaey is a volcano. The volcano is called Eldfell and is quite active, often causing the locals troubles.

The last significant eruption occurred in 1973 when Eldfell went off, almost without warning, causing lava to flow over larger parts of Heimaey island. The islands had to be evacuated and the home island was left deserted until the eruption has stopped. This is one of the most memorable events in the late 19th century and was life-altering for many of the Islanders.

Vestmannaeyjar islands view from above

Many believe that the Elephant Rock was formed in this very eruption which enlarged the island by substantially.

If the elephant did in fact form in the eruption in 1973 that would make it relatively young but even so it has become somewhat of a token for the Westman Islands community. This basalt rock giant that hides its trunk in the cold Atlantic Sea is something you are not going to want to miss!

How to get to the Elephant Rock?

To get to the Elephant Rock you will first need to make your way to the Westman Islands.  This can be done either by boat or by flying.

man swimming by boat in Iceland

If you choose the boat option   you will need to find out from which port Herjólfur (the boat) is leaving on this particular date. During summer Herjólfur is most likely to depart from Landeyjarhöfn which is located close to Seljalandsfoss waterfall but if you are planning on visiting in winter or when the weather is rougher the boat might depart from Þorlákshöfn. If it departs from Þorlákshöfn the boat ride will take 3 hours but leaving from Landeyjarhöfn only about 30.

Flying to Westman Islands  is a quicker option where you catch a flight from Reykjavík and land in the Westman Islands in only about 25 minutes!

Whichever way you choose, once you have arrived in the Westman Islands you will need to book a Rib Safari tour or a boat ride around the island. There is no way of seeing the Elephant Rock walking around the island. You must go by boat. Or you can catch a glimpse of Elephant Rock during our Vestmannaeyjar Island, Volcanoes and Puffins Tour including many more amazing sights and puffin watching!

What to do around the Elephant Rock

  • Visit the Eldheimar Volcano Museum and learn about the eruption of Eldfell Volcano

Elephant rock.

' Elephant   Rock ' is a natural rock formation in  Heimaey , part of the   Westman Islands  or  Vestmannaeyjar . The islands are a visitor attraction in their own right, but Elephant Rock is the main draw. The  basalt rock structure  is completely natural, but remarkably, largely resembles that of an elephant! T he rock looks identical to an elephant drinking from the water , with some of its trunk submerged in the seawater. Even the texture of the rock adds to the wrinkled appearance of elephant skin! Fans have also spotted the resemblance to H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic entity,  Cthulhu , a sea monster with the face of an octopus, of American pulp magazine Weird Tales.

There is a picture that went viral on the internet a while ago about Elephant Rock. Elephant Rock, Iceland, is the close-up elephant face, but the aerial picture is from Asia.

How to See Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock is best viewed from the sea!  RIB boat tours  and ferries  run 5-6 times a day from  Landeyjahöfn, on the mainland, four nautical miles from the rock, and offer the closest views of the rock. Alternatively, from Heimaey, Elephant Rock can be seen from the golf course, at the edge of Halldórsskora’s sea cliffs. To get there you follow the signs to either the campsite, golf course or sports area.

Elephant Rock from Mainland Iceland

To get to Elephant Rock from  Reykjavik , you will need to drive along the  South Coast  for around 2 hours, around 140 kilometers, following Route One to the ferry port at Landeyjahöfn. From Vik, Landeyjahöfn is roughly 1 hour away, around a 75km drive. From here you can simply take a boat tour around the islands!

Attractions near Elephant Rock

  • The vast majority on the small island of  Heimaey   is open to visitors! Nevertheless, because of the remote, island nature, to get around  you will need an off-road, 4 wheel drive vehicle to get almost anywhere out of the main town.
  • Skansinn Church  is located next to the harbor on Heimaey Island, as a duplicate of the first ever original wooden Viking church in Iceland. The church was donated by the Government of Norway in 2000 to mark a thousand years of Christianity in Iceland. The church is located next to the harbor.
  • Stórhöfði   is a rocky headland on the southern edge of Heimaey, unofficially  the windiest place in Europe!  The peninsula has a modest weather station and some bird colonies and is a peaceful and relaxing area for some tranquility.
  • Heimaey   is at a natural advantage point to see the  aurora borealis lights . On cold dark nights, the Northern Lights are seen clearly above the island.
  • During the summer months, tourists also come to the island to see the  wildlife . You may see thousands or even millions of  puffins   on the cliffs! Whilst orcas, dolphins, and other  whales  roam in the waters around the islands. Keiko, the orca who starred in the popular 1990s film franchise Free Willy, was released in the waters around Heimaey for a short time.

  • Hiking Eldfell Volcano  is a popular summertime pastime. As the summit is just over 600 feet above sea level, the mountain is suitable for even to amateur hikers to climb. The island has well-marked paths, and you can see the lava field that covered houses in a drastic 1973 volcanic eruption. Remarkably, the residents were able to escape!

Elephant Rock Iceland: Heimaey Island's Volcanic Natural Wonder

In the Land of Fire and Ice with its incredibly interesting terrain, you can find plenty of intriguing and funny-looking rock formations (many of which have equally interesting backstories).

One of these must-visit spots is Elephant Rock in Iceland . And whilst there still are those who believe that Elephant Rock in Iceland is fake, we can promise that Elephant Rock in Iceland is 100% real.

The whole Elephant Rock in Iceland myth was merely started by a viral post that

Seemed too good to be true (it’s extraordinarily lifelike, we can assure you), and

Got mixed up with the Elephant Rock in Asia (but more on this later).

In this article, we tell you all there is to know about Elephant Rock, reveal its most interesting facts, tell you how to get there, and what else you can expect from the surroundings. So, without further ado, let’s rock on to Elephant Rock!

elephant rock iceland

The Elephant-Shaped Rock in Westman Islands

At first glance, you’ll be forgiven to think that Elephant Rock has been purposefully carved out of the cliff face, but this basalt rock formation is 100% natural . Elephant Rock is, just as the name suggests, a rock that looks like an elephant that seemingly has its trunk in the ocean water.

Whether it’s coming for a dip or a drink is unclear, but it sure makes for an impressive sight.

How Did the Elephant Rock Form?

As we already mentioned, Elephant Rock consists of basalt rock. For those who were unaware, basalt rock is essentially lava that has cooled down . The culprit in the case of Elephant Rock is Eldfell Volcano , which has had numerous eruptions in the past, but its 1973 eruption is believed to have been responsible for this animalistic creation.

Eldfell Volcano

Fun Facts About Elephant Rock in Iceland

The following are just some fun facts about Elephant Rock to use as casual dinner conversation or to win that pub quiz trophy:

Ours is not the only elephant-shaped island. Strangely enough, there is another Elephant Rock in Asia that often gets confused with the one in Iceland . Where our Elephant Rock mostly consists of the face of an animal, the one in Asia looks like an Elephant lying down in the water if you take an aerial photo of it from above. When you look at Elephant Rock in Iceland from above, it just looks like a mountain rising out of the sea.

Iceland having an Elephant Rock is extremely ironic, since there has never been any record of an elephant ever setting foot on the island .

The above-mentioned is also why the name ‘elephant’ is not native to Iceland . In fact, it was merely adopted by the Icelandic language after the Vikings were taught the word by a Turkish Man (who obviously had seen an elephant before).

Where is Elephant Rock in Iceland?

Elephant Rock can be found on the island of Heimaey, which is part of the Westman Islands , roughly 7.4 kilometers into the ocean off the south coast of Iceland . As one of the more remote regions in Iceland, it’s filled with natural wonders, breathtaking views, and beautiful landscapes.

There are essentially 2 ways to get to Elephant Rock in Iceland:

There are numerous flights from Reykjavík to Vestmannaeyjar Airport every day and will last a mere 25 minutes. Once you’ve arrived on the Westman Islands, you’ll need to arrange for transport and book a spot on one of the Elephant Rock in Iceland boat tours.

Via Self-drive

We are firm believers that a road trip is the best way to explore the country, especially when it comes to the more remote regions such as the Westman Islands. To get to Elephant Rock, all you need to do is to get on Route 1 and drive along the south coast of Iceland for about 2 hours till you reach the ferry at Landeyjahöfn where you will go across to the Westman Islands.

How to See Elephant Rock in Iceland

Most will recommend that you book a spot on a boat tour to view Elephant Rock. It’s important to note, though, that the Elephant Rock in Iceland boat tours around Heimaey are limited to the warmer months of the year here on the island (May to September) . But the boats are not the only way to see Elephant Rock.

You can go on a guided walking trail (also reserved for the warmer months with more daylight hours between May and August). If you’re a golfer, you can always take on the Westman Islands Golf Course , which is considered one of the top 200 golf courses in the world where you can get a nice view of Elephant Rock whilst playing 18 holes.

Where to Eat Near Elephant Rock

If you need to grab a bite on your Elephant Rock outing, you’ll find plenty of places to satisfy any craving. If you’ve gone to play a round of golf, you can actually get something at the clubhouse restaurant. Alternatively, there are plenty of restaurants and cafés offering all sorts of food in the town of Heimaey Island.

Where to Stay Around Elephant Rock

There are many different accommodation options to choose from in town that will suit every preference and every budget . Places such as Puffin Nest Capsule Hostel or Guesthouse Holl . But our personal recommendation would be to go camping at Vestmannaeyjar .

And don’t worry, if you don’t have any camping gear with you, or don’t think of yourself as the next winner of Survivor and enjoy your comforts, you can simply opt for one of their glamping tent options.

You’ll find all the amenities and facilities you need – all within viewing distance of the gentle, rocky, giant in the ocean. This is, of course, also the best way to save on those accommodation costs.

What to Do After Visiting Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock is not the only attraction in the area and is also the reason we recommend staying over at Heimaey for at least a night or two to properly take in everything the area has to offer. If you’re thinking of exploring the area a bit, the following attractions and activities should definitely make it onto your trip itinerary:

Check out the Puffins at Saeheimar Aquarium (this makes it possible to spot these lovable clowns of the sea even when visiting out of Puffin season).

Visit Brothers Brewery and taste some of our delicious craft beers.

Try your hand at Sprangan . This is a local activity where you swing around the cliffs with a rope.

Go to the Eldheimar Volcano Museum where you can learn about the volcano and find out first-hand how one of its eruptions created Elephant Rock.

Elephant Rock in Heimaey, Iceland; a Must On Any Iceland Trip Itinerary

Both locals and past visitors to the island will tell you that you’ll be missing out by skipping the Westman Islands during your trip to Iceland.

Due to its remote location and various activities, we recommend that you plan your trip for the summer months when you not only get to go Puffin spotting but also take one of the boat tours to Elephant Rock. So, rent a car in Iceland upon your arrival, head south on Route 1, and take the ferry to a lifetime of memories.

Elephant Rock In Iceland – Discover the Elephant Rock

The Elephant Rock in Iceland is in the Westman Islands archipelago (Vestmannaeyjar) south of Iceland. More specifically on the brim of Heimaey*, the biggest island of the archipelago and the only one inhabited. This unique basalt geological rock formation is thought to have been formed in one of the many volcanic eruptions of Mt. Eldfell in the last 15.000 years. Its most recent eruption was in 1973 which resulted in a complete evacuation of the islands population (don’t worry, we came back).

There are many elephant rocks around the world. Sri Lanka, Australia, Nevada, China, Italy and Saudi Arabia***but not until recently did the world find out about the one in Iceland. Our Elephant Rock became a social media sensation a few years ago (we just thought: what took you guys so long?). Some people even claimed it wasn’t real, and some still think it’s a hoax. Nope. It’s real. And it’s amazing! In our humble opinion of course.

But one does not have to ponder long why people thought it was a photoshop prank. The basalt adds to the look of an elephant skin and it’s hard not to see the elephant dipping its trunk in the water.

How can I see the Elephant rock in Iceland?

How can I see the Elephant rock in Iceland?

This natural wonder is best viewed by boat. From May to September, you can take a boat tour around Heimaey, experiencing more of the archipelago and of course our Elephant. But don’t worry if you visit us in the winter months. By land you can enjoy it from our renowned golf course (which happens to be ranked as one of the #200 golf courses of the world. There are also guided walking trips from May to August with safety lines (which we recommend). Please see here for further information. There is even a campground nearby, so you can literally stay with our beautiful giant.

So what are you waiting for? Come on over. You could even start a new bucket-list adventure. Visit the Elephant Rocks around the world? It could (and should) become a popular trend, it’s at least easier than visiting the peaks of our planet! Can you imagine the instagram-food posts that would result as well? Speaking of good food – did you know that our restaurants, in our cute little island, are top ranked in Iceland?

What more do you want?

What more do you want? Elephent rock in Iceland

*Many visitors ask us why we always refer to the plural of Vestmannaeyjar (e. Westman Islands) when there is only one inhabited island, (which also has a beautiful name by itself, Heimaey, literally means Home island, the main homestead). The simple answer? We don’t know. We just do. And if there is one thing you need to understand about the Westman Islanders is that we often dance to our own tune. We’re quirky that way. We’d like to think that we’re adorably weird. We also pride ourselves of our hospitality (there is a festival once a year where we literally try to be the most-ess host-ess, called Þjóðhátíð), so our guests tend to simply love visiting our Westman Islands (plural)  on our Heimaey (singular). Now, isn’t that just adorable?

But you have to visit us to find out and make up your own mind.

Because it looks like an elephant dipping its trunk in the ocean. It even has that look that elephants skin has, leathery and grey. That is due to the basalt.

History of Elephant Rock

How was Elephant Rock formed? Seeing its resemblance to an actual elephant, there are a lot of questions about its origins. The most common theory about the formation of Elephant Rock is that a volcanic eruption caused it. The reason for this weird and surprising shape is that the lava was cooling off so rapidly that it created such a shape.

Volcanic eruptions are or used to be a common phenomenon. The most infamous volcanic eruption that occurred in Heimaey was the eruption of the Eldfell volcano in 1973. After this incident, the island was significantly damaged, serving as a reminder of what harsh consequences this wonder might have.

Interesting facts about Elephant Rock

  • Elephant Rock is around 15,000 years old.
  • There are a few myths that surround Elephant Rock and the origin of its shape. A few examples include a theory stating that it’s actually a real elephant that turned into a stone and another one revealing that people carved this formation. None of these theories are true.
  • Some people believe the rock resembles Cthulhu – a fictional creature that reminds them of an octopus.

What is Sprangan? All sports enthusiasts should sit up as Sprangan is quite an exciting sport where you… swing off a cliff. Similar to cliff rappelling, Sprangan is a common sport in Iceland. How do you participate in Sprangan? While standing on one side of the cliff with a rope in your hand, you jump and swing to the other side of the cliff, using your legs to push yourself off it and reach the rock on the other side. You do this all the way down, gradually lowering yourself until you reach the bottom of the cliff. No matter how fun and easy it might look, it takes time and training to swing properly without injuring yourself.

Puffin watching

Puffins are cute little birds, often a must-see matter by bird watchers because of their distinctive looks. Iceland is known to be the breeding ground for puffins who spend most of their time at sea. You don’t have to turn your head around on how to find and observe these birds, as there are plenty of puffin-watching tours that will ensure you get the best experience.

Hiking in Heimaklettur

elephant rock iceland tour

The highest mountain in Vestmannaeyjar is Heimaklettur. Situated 283 meters above sea level, Heimaklettur is quite a challenging hike because of its occasional steepness. The hardest and most dangerous place in the area is eased up by putting up a ladder. However, this isn’t too much of a help if you’re afraid of heights. It’s recommended to go on a hike in Heimaklettur with someone who is an experienced hiker or a person who has already been to this mountain before. What’s important to consider before starting your adventure is checking the weather conditions as well as making sure to always follow the hiking path.

Elephant Rock Iceland | Westman Islands

elephant rock iceland tour

Updated April 2022

Iceland is most definitely not a tropical island and is, therefore, not known for its elephants. Or, so you would think. However just on the western coast of Iceland’s largest island, you will actually find an enormous petrified rock elephant jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean.

Elephant rock in Westman Islands

You often hear of these rock phenomena, and when you visit you squint your eyes and try all different angles but still you barely manage to see it. Well, with the Elephant Rock it’s pretty easy to see. It is as someone went out and carved an elephant into the gigantic rock. Some even like to think a troll-like elephant simply caught too much sun and turned into stone, which is a common belief of rock formations in Iceland.

elephant rock iceland tour

However, neither of these explanations are actually true. So, in this post, we’ll go over how the rock actually formed, how you can visit it, what other attractions are close to it and other fun facts about the island it rests on.

Where is the Westman Island’s Elephant Rock?

The elephant rock is located at the brim of Heimaey, the largest and only inhabited island of the Westman Islands . The island rises 200 meters (656 ft) from the sea. It is only 13.4 square kilometers (5.2 sq mi) of which 2,2 square kilometers (0.85 sq mi) were added in a voluminous volcanic eruption in 1973.  The Elephant Rock is located at the western part of Heimaey sticking out from the Mountain Dalfjall.

How did the Elephant Rock form?

The Elephant Rock is believed to have formed in one of the island’s many volcanic eruptions but it considered especially active for such a popular living location. However, the last significant eruption was in 1973 and due to a full evacuation, the population has still not reached those numbers again.

elephant rock iceland tour

The elephant is a basalt rock structure and its texture adds even more authenticity as it resembles the skin of an elephant. Basalt is very common in Iceland. Some of the more famous ones are found in Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach , Svartifoss Waterfall and Gerðuberg on Snaefellsnes .

How to visit the Westman Island’s Elephant Rock?

First, let’s start with how to get to Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). The best way to get there if having a car is to take the ferry, Herjolfur. The ferry allows for cars and then it’s simple to drive around once on the island. It’s also possible to leave the car behind and either walk or bike around the island. In summer the ferry leaves from Landeyjarhofn (35 minutes sail) near Seljalandsfoss waterfall and thus makes a brilliant detour off the Ring Road.

Road in Iceland

In winter the ferry often leaves from from Thorlakshofn (3 hours sail) which does delay the trip a bit but still makes for a great day, or even days if time allows.

Another option is to fly as there are regular domestic flights from Reykjavik airport to Vestmannaeyjar airport.

Westman Islands

Once landed in Vestmannaeyjar, it’s time to see the Elephant Rock. In order to get a good visual, you need to access it by boat and then view it from the sea. There are regular scenic boat tours from the harbor or enjoy a thrilling RIB safari cruise in small inflatable boats. Most tours range from 1-2 hours, but it’s also possible to book longer and more luxurious tours.

Fun Facts About the Iceland’s Elephant Rock

  • Elephant Rock sticks out from Dalfjall Mountain. Which is the second highest summit of Vestmannaeyjar islands.
  • Mistaken Identity : Three pictures thought to be of Iceland’s elephant rock went viral. And, can still be seen circulating around the internet. They show two headshots and one aerial photo claiming to be of the elephant rock in Iceland. Although the close-up headshots are real and located in Iceland the aerial shot is of another island, located in Asia.
  • Every year during the first weekend in August, a huge festival is held in Vestmannaeyjar, called Þjodhatid. Then, thousands of locals join to party and enjoy the musical acts bringing the population of the island up by about 10,000. This is an incredible opportunity to explore the islands! FYI: if you plan on joining this weekend it is better to make all your reservations way in advance!
  • Herjolfur , the ferry that takes you to the Islands is named after the first settler in Vestmannaeyjar. But Herjolfur, along with his brother, found Iceland!
  • H.P. Lovecraft’s mythical creature: Some superfans have thought the Elephant Rock to resemble Cthulhu. One of Lovecraft’s mythical creatures, a sea monster with the face of an octopus

What is there to see and do near the Westman Island’s Elephant Rock?

  • Eldheimar Volcano Museum tells an incredible tale of life on a volcanically active island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. The exhibition focuses on one of Iceland’s best known natural disasters. When Mt. Eldfell started erupting in the middle of the night and the 5,300 inhabitants had to be evacuated from the island as quickly as possible. The eruption kept going for five months destroying over 400 houses. Inside the museum, you’ll find the ruins of one of these houses preserved perfectly under the thick ash. The sight speaks louder than words!
  • Skansinn Church is a small black turf church in the original Viking style. You can explore it inside out! The church was a gift from the Norwegian governments. Given to Iceland to celebrate 1000 years of Christianity in Iceland. It is located right by the harbor, within walking distance from where the ferry comes in.
  • Slippurinn restaurant is my ultimate favorite stop to make in Vestmannaeyjar. It is where quality Icelandic local cuisine appears in its purest form. The chefs use natural ingredients from the islands, going out to pick sheep’s sorrel, rhubarb and other things that grow wildly in the islands and mix it together with fresh lamb or fish from the harbor. Treat yourself to their food and don’t miss out on their cocktails. That’s an order!
  • Beer Tasting at the Brothers Brewery. What started as a side-project/hobby for some local beer lovers has now grown into a full-blown business. And, thankfully so, if I may add. I just love this place! Also, the tend to name each beer after a lively character so ask about the ones you try.
  • A hike up Heimaklettur . Not recommended for those afraid of heights but for the rest, this trail is absolutely gorgeous. Prepare for a lot of “oh my gads” followed by a few long “woooows!

Elephant Rock Iceland: A Westman Islands Star Attraction

elephant rock iceland tour

As you drive along the South Coast of Iceland toward Seljalandsfoss waterfall , you’ll pass the Westman islands or Vestmannaeyjar. Southern Iceland is known for volcanic eruptions and this unspoiled archipelago is the result of volcanic activity. You’ll want to stop by Heimaey island (Home island), the only inhabited island of the cluster. Heimaey is the largest island and home to Elephant Rock Iceland.

Elephant Rock Iceland on Heimaey in the Westman Islands

Elephant Rock Iceland: What is it Exactly?

Elephant Rock is a natural rock formation on the sea cliffs that looks just like a giant elephant. We get the name Elephant Rock from the appearance of the giant pachyderm dipping its trunk into the ocean grab some refreshing water. The resemblance is uncanny, especially because the basalt rock that makes up the natural wonder is dark gray. Combine this with the wrinkly skin appearance of the rock’s texture and you can see how Iceland’s Elephant Rock couldn’t be called anything else.

While the advancing lava has long since cooled, what we are left with is Elephant Rock in Iceland. The mossy rocks that cover the head and ears add to the beauty of this dramatic spot.

Some have pointed out the surface of the rock also bears a resemblance to HP Lovecraft’s terrifying sea demon Cthulhu. His horror-genre comics from 1928 featured a cosmic daemon with the face of an octopus.  If you’re not sure what I’m referring to, picture Bill Nighy as Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies instead. The rocky sea cliff has holes in the rock which give the eerie impression of eyes and realistic appearance of a face.

Elephant Rock in Heimaey Iceland

You may sometimes hear Heimaey referred to as Elephant island Iceland because they are so closely associated with one another. In fact, many visitors come to see Elephant Rock in Heimaey Iceland as part of a day trip or stopover. To get to the island, you’ll need to catch the ferry. It’s a very straightforward and enjoyable ride.

The Westman Islands are home to Elephant Rock Iceland

Elephant Rock island is located 7.4 km (4.6 miles) nautical miles off the coast of Iceland. Spread among the 13 square kilometers (5 square miles) of the entire area, you’ll find 15 islands and 30 natural reefs. To get to the Elephant Rock in Iceland is easy to get to via ferry. Book your ferry tickets on the Herjólfur passenger ferry that leaves from Landeyjahöfn.

It holds 500 ferry passengers and 60 cars, which sounds like a high capacity. But remember that during the summer high season, everyone is going to want to take a trip. Tickets might sell out, so the sooner you can book, the better.

Don’t worry if you’re not able to bring your car or camper on the ferry. Landeyjahöfn has free parking and everything on the island is within walking distance. You’ll be able to get around easily and have a nice active day out.

The ride itself is short; around 35 minutes each way. Then, get ready to explore all of the wonderful natural beauty and make your way to Elephant Rock. There are around seven departures and returns every day, so just plan your schedule and give yourself plenty of time. Ticket prices  are quite reasonable. Adults pay 1600 ISK ($13.25 or 11.90€) and there are discounts for children, teenagers, senior citizens, disabled travelers, and students.

Directions to Arrive

So where is Elephant Rock?   Once you’ve landed in Heimaey and gotten your bearings, start heading toward the western side of the island. There are some protected nesting areas, so depending on the season, you might need to take a small detour. If you’re wondering where is Elephant Rock, keep going towards the Westman Islands Golf Club. The rock itself is located on the northwestern tip of the island.

Elephant Rock Iceland is on Heimaey island

Once you’ve passed the Latter Day Saints Church Monument and Mormon pond, you’ll see it off in the distance. Walk up the shore to get a closer look from the rocky coast to the south of our elephant-like friend.

The best angle for viewing the rock is actually from the sea, and you can access this by private boat or on a boat tour. In addition to Elephant Rock, the island is famous for its rock formations, coves, inlets, and bird cliffs. Take a Westman islands boat tour for a relaxing few hours enjoying the amazing view. If you plan on going this route, please remember that the tours leave from Heimaey (the main island) and not from the mainland.

Elephant Rock Heimaey Iceland

A visit to Elephant Rock in Heimaey Iceland is one you won’t soon forget. Our country boasts thousands and natural wonders and this is a very special one indeed. What to know about Elephant Rock: A guide to Iceland’s volcanic wonder

View of the Elephant Rock in Iceland

Iceland is home to magnificent geological formations, but one of its most unusual natural sights is the Elephant Rock . Also known as Halldórsskora, this rocky cliff face in the Westman Islands archipelago bears an uncanny resemblance to a gigantic elephant taking a dip in the ocean.

Many people assumed that Elephant Rock was fake because it just seemed impossible for a rock to look like an elephant naturally. You may have seen the viral pictures of Elephant Rock circulating online–while the aerial shot of a group of islands that look like a swimming elephant is from Asia, those close-up shots of the elephant face are really what Iceland’s Elephant Rock looks like in reality.

Where is Elephant Rock located in Iceland?

Elephant Rock is located on the western coast of the island of Heimaey , the largest and only inhabited island in the Westman Islands archipelago or Vestmannaeyjar, which consists of 15 islands. These islands are a part of Iceland’s southern volcanic zone.

How was Elephant Rock formed?

The Elephant Rock with red ashfall in Iceland

Elephant Rock was the result of volcanic activity from Heimaey’s main volcano Eldfell . Translating to “hill of fire”, Eldfell made the headlines in 1973 when a major eruption forced the island’s entire population of approximately 5,000 residents to evacuate. The volcano erupted for over six months, with ashfall and lava destroying many homes, but most residents returned the following year after the volcanic activity calmed down.

Elephant Rock predates this eruption and is found at the base of Blátindur, which juts out into the sea on the western coast of Heimaey, not far from the island’s scenic golf club . The cliff face is formed from basalt rock, giving the Elephant Rock a realistic look of the wrinkly gray skin of a grizzled elephant.

Of note is the shadowy “eye” of the elephant, an indentation in the rock which has some people comparing this mysterious pachyderm to the fictional Lovecraftian god Cthulhu.

How to get to Elephant Rock

Taking a ferry to the Elephant Rock in Iceland

The fastest way to get to Heimaey for international travelers is to transfer to Reykjavik ’s domestic airport and take a 20-minute flight to Vestmannaeyjar Airport.

Alternatively, a cheaper option is to take the Herjólfur ferry that departs from two ports depending on the weather. The ferries usually sail from Landeyjahöfn, a 2-hour drive from Reykjavik and a short 40-minute ferry ride away from Heimaey. But when weather conditions are poor, the ferries sail from Þorlákshöfn instead, which is a shorter 45-minute drive from Reykjavik but a longer boat journey that takes just under 3 hours. Check the Herjólfur website for the latest updates.

A popular time to visit Heimaey is during the first weekend of August when the annual Þjóðhátíð outdoor festival takes place—it’s a very busy time, attracting over 16,000 people. Expect bonfires, fireworks and the traditional hillside singalong session over three days.

The best way to see Elephant Rock

Rigid Inflatable Boat tour to see Elephant Rock in Iceland

Elephant Rock is a part of the cliffs found on the western side of Heimaey and the face of the elephant is best seen from the water. The Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) tour is a quick one-hour boat ride that will take you to see Elephant Rock, other geological formations and even spot some whales and puffins around Heimaey’s coastline.

If you want a more in depth study of Iceland’s Southern Volcanic Zone, you can start your 3-day private volcano tour from Reykjavik with highlights that include Westman Islands , Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach .

Things to do near Elephant Rock

Besides seeing Elephant Rock, take the time to walk up to Eldfell crater, a 650-foot tall volcanic cone formed in the wake of the 1973 eruption. Another popular but challenging hike takes you up Heimaklettur (Home Rock) for some panoramic views of Heimaey and the mainland.

Eldheimar in Iceland

For some history, Eldheimar is a museum that documents the momentous eruption and how innovative Icelanders managed to stop the lava flow and save the island from total destruction. Sagnheimar Folk Museum takes you further back to another historic incident in Westman Island history, where over 230 locals were abducted by Barbary pirates from Algiers and forced into slavery in 1627.

A group of Atlantic puffins in Iceland

From April to September, Heimaey is the favorite nesting ground of Atlantic puffins. The southern cape of Stórhöfði is best for puffin spotting, though be warned that this area routinely records some of the fiercest winds in Iceland, so dress warmly. You may even spot some puffins lost in the town center, confused by the artificial lights.

Another popular activity is to take boat tours to spot other critters around the Westman Islands like orcas, dolphins, and fin whales.

Fantastic day! I'm so happy this one-day tour of the Westman Islands fit into our schedule or we would have missed not only the stunningly beautiful cove where the puffins nest but also the harbor town with its fascinating history. Our wonderful Icelandic guide told us this may become a two-day tour in the future as there's so much to see, but for us on the last full day of our vacation, it was perfect. Highly recommend!

What a fun way to explore the waters around the Westman Islands. Dressed in the thick seafaring suit to stay warm, I felt like a true adventurer on the yellow boat. The fast speeds were a thrill, and the music added a fun touch! Great guides and great sights. Caves, unique rock formations, puffins, dare-devil sheep, some orcas if you're lucky! Don't forget some binoculars if you got some!

Elephant Rock in Iceland: A Cool Place to Visit

elephant rock iceland tour

I celand is a magnetizing country with various unique geographical features and many cool places to visit. With a name like Elephant Rock, Iceland reveals yet another mysterious geological wonder that has become a major tourist attraction.

Elephant Rock is a natural rock formation that is part of a group of islands called Westman Islands or Vestmannaeyjar. It is only about 7.5 kilometers or 4.6 miles from the coast of Southern Iceland . This interesting rock formation is aptly coined Elephant Rock because it literally looks like a giant elephant. Let’s learn more about this amazing structure in Iceland and how you can best see it in person.

elephant rock in Iceland close up picture

Elephant Rock in Heimaey Iceland

The structure shows an elephant drinking water from the ocean and the rock texture looks like actual elephant skin. The accuracy of the likeness is uncanny. Many people say it also has a resemblance to HP Lovecraft’s horrifying sea monster called Cthulhu, which has the face of an octopus.

This natural phenomenon is located in the South Coast of Iceland and it’s at the western section of the island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands. Heimaey is the largest island from the island of the cluster that comprises the Westman Islands. Westman Islands are a group of 15 islands and reefs that were formed from strong volcanic eruptions and turbulent underground sea activity.

The rumored story is that Elephant Rock formed during one of Mount Eldfell’s many powerful volcanic explosions. After these eruptions, this famous basalt rock structure formed naturally from the slow cooling of advancing lava. It’s definitely a wonderful site to visit for anyone interested in geology and unique rock formations.

Heimaey Iceland

Heimaey is the largest of the 15 islands that make up the Westman Islands. It has a total area of roughly 13 square kilometers, which is about 5 square miles. Heimaey is also the only inhabited island from the large island cluster and literally means Home Island.

Best Way to View Elephant Rock

The best way to see Elephant Rock is from a RIB boat tour or ferry ride. They happen at least five to six times throughout the day. If you are arriving from Reykjavík you can rent a car and drive on the Ring Road. The drive takes almost two hours to reach the harbor of Landeyjahöfn. Then you can be picked up and go as close as four nautical miles from the rock formation. This distance is close but far enough away to provide the best view of the whole structure. When you are in range, get your camera ready to capture amazing photos.

Hiking Trail in the area

After you have viewed Elephant Rock from the ocean on a boat tour you can go on a guided hiking tour. It is a wonderful opportunity to exercise, connect with nature, and take great scenic photos from the Elephant Head. Make sure you wear weather appropriate clothing and shoes and bring along refreshments like water for the long hike.

The tours typically start at a stunning valley called Herjólfsdalur, which looks like an impressive rock wall amphitheater. Then you will walk to the top of Dalfihall Mountain and eventually reach Blátindur, the Blue Peak. This peak is the second highest on the island of Heimaey. Next is the careful trek down to the sea cliffs of Halldórsskora and the final hike to reach the Elephants Head.

The best season to go on this hike and see Elephant Rock is during the summer from June through August. You will experience great weather and have an opportunity to see many bird species since they nest close to the Elephant’s Head. In fact, the Westmann Islands have the largest population of the famous Atlantic Puffins in the world. You can see many of them freely walking around during their summer breeding season.

The adorable puffins are known for their bright beaks, funny walk, and friendliness. However, please practice safe tourism by not touching them and keeping a safe distance from the cliff edges. This will allow you to bird watch responsibly while you enjoy observing the puffins toddle in their natural habitat.

More Elephant Rock Attractions

The Aurora Borealis also called the Northern Lights can be seen perfectly from Heimaey Island. It is crystal clear at night during the right seasons such as the very end of summer through spring. The Northern Lights in Iceland are more vivid than any other place in the world.

In addition, Iceland recently opened the world’s first open water sanctuary for beluga whales. Now you can go whale watching and see many sea animals such as beluga whales, orcas, and dolphins. You are sure to enjoy your trip to Elephant Rock in Iceland because it is teeming with breathing taking views and marvels.

Elephant Rock, Iceland – Discover this Volcanic Wonder in Iceland

The Elephant Rock is a basalt rock found in Heimaey((which means “Home Island”) , part of the Westman Islands also known as Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland. Scientists found the rock as a result of an eruption but there are beliefs around the place that these rocks are petrified mythical elephant seals. This is often because some of the volcano-formed look almost exactly just like the head of an enormous elephant sticking its trunk within the water.

Where is Elephant rock located ?

The Elephant Rock lies off the south coast of Iceland ( approximately 7.5 kilometers ), near Heimaey in the Westman Islands. The Westman Islands are formed by volcanic eruptions and are a collection of 15 islands and reefs formed by volcanic eruptions. The Elephant rock is around 135 -140 kilometers from Reykjavik. Talking about Heimaey,it is the largest of the 15 islands present in the Westman Islands and also the only populated island. Elephant Rock is found in the western part of Heimaey, Westman Islands.

How to get to Elephant Rock?

To get to the Elephant rock you’ll either pass a ship or fly. The elephant rock can also be visited by a rental car followed by a ferry from Landeyjahöfn or Þórlakshöfn to the Westland Islands. Comparatively flying may be a quicker option in comparison to the boat or self-drive where you catch a flight from Reykjavík and land within the Westman Islands in just about 20-25 minutes. you’ll get to book a Rib Safari tour or a ship ride round the island after landing there and there’s no way of seeing the Elephant Rock walking around the island you want to go only by boat. Still, the sight is  well worth the  effort!

There Is A Real Elephant Rock In Iceland (& Here's How To Visit)

Elephant Rock is one of the most Instagrammable attractions in Iceland and can be paired with whale watching and bird watching.

Quick Links

What to know about iceland's picture-perfect elephant rock, what to know about visiting elephant rock in iceland, replicate the experience the other side of the world in new zealand.

There are a number of "elephant rocks" around the world including in New Zealand, Italy's Sardinia, and Iceland. The Elephant Rock of Iceland is one of the famous eye-catching natural formations of the other-worldly volcanic island. Elephant Rock is without a doubt one of the best places to visit while visiting Iceland .

Elephant Rock in Iceland is just one of the many unforgettable geological formations in Iceland. Iceland is a country with endless out-of-this-world attractions no one will ever forget. Iceland is perfect for an epic road trip and for extraordinary hiking and camping opportunities and is a country most visitors name as one of their favorite destinations.

Elephant Rock is found on the coast off of mainland of Iceland. Elephant Rock is located on the island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands. Another attraction in the Westman Islands is the Thridrangar Lighthouse which might just be the most impossibly perched lighthouse in the world .

Iceland's Elephant Rock is made up of basalt that was formed during an eruption of the volcano Eldfell (Iceland is possibly the only place in the world where it is also possible to tour inside a volcano ). The last time Eldfell erupted was in 1973 - although Elephant Rock is much older. The eruption resulted in the evacuation of the island (although the inhabitants are back in their homes now).

Elephant Rock is called "Fíllinn" in Icelandic. Viewed at the right angle, Elephant Rock appears as the head of an elephant with its trunk in the water. It almost looks as if the elephant is quenching its thirst by drinking from the sea. As the rock formation is composed of basalt, the 'skin' of the Elephant even appears to be wrinkled.

The Westman Islands are a group of 15 islands driven out of the sea by volcanoes (like the rest of Iceland) and are part of the Southern Iceland Volcanic Zone. The largest of the Westman Islands is Heimaey (which is also the only one that is inhabited). Elephant Rock is just one of the many eye-catching volcanic formations in the Westman Island group.

Perhaps the best way to explore Iceland is by hiring a car and exploring the island. Those who are self-touring in Iceland should drive and take the ferry from Landeyjahofn (Þórlakshöfn) to the Westman Islands. It is about a one-hour boat ride to see Elephant Rock. There are also plenty of Westman Islands tours to choose from, which include tours to Elephant Rock.

While there, take the time to also see the Eldfell Crater and the Eldheimar Museum. Other attractions and activities in the Westman Islands are birdwatching (including seeing the largest population of nesting Atlantic Puffins in the world during summer) and whale watching. Many of the puffin and whale watching boat trips are paired with visiting Elephant Rock.

To see the Atlantic Puffins in the Westman Islands, consider visiting during the months of August and September (so consider this window of time to visit Elephant Rock). This is when visitors get to see the young puffins at the stage where the adults have ceased to bring the fledglings food. That forces them to talk flight from their holes in the cliffs, driven by hunger. During the night, the lights of the town attract the fledglings in the hundreds, and the locals help guide the birds into the wild and away from the village cats.

The Elephant Rock is best seen by boat, and the best season is from May to September, when it is possible to take a boat tour around Heimaey Island. It is also possible to see it during the winter from a remarkable nearby golf course.

Elephant Rock Hiking Tour:

  • Season: May to August
  • Duration: 4 Hours

There are also guided walking trips offered around Heimaey Island between May and August (plus, there is even a campground nearby Elephant Rock).

New Zealand is another place to see elephant rocks, exotic seabirds, and great whale-watching opportunities.

On the North Island of New Zealand, visitors can explore the Three Sisters and the Elephant Rock. The Three Sisters (now two) are 25-meter rocks. The Elephant Rock has the appearance of a full body of an elephant - although the formations are being weathered, and in 2016, the New Zealand Elephant Rock lost its trunk.

One of the best places in the world to go Sperm Whale watching is in New Zealand's Kaikoura. Also, on the South Island, visitors can see the only albatross nesting colony on the mainland .

The Story Behind Iceland's Volcanic Elephant

  • Metropolitan State University
  • Sustainable Fashion
  • Art & Media

Iceland is a land of volcanoes. Nowhere is this more evident than on the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), an archipelago off the southern coast of Iceland. Here, centuries of volcanic eruptions formed sea cliffs that appear almost fairy-tale-like. Among these eye-catching formations, one stands out: A portion of the volcano-formed coast on Heimaey (which means "Home Island") looks almost exactly like the head of a large elephant sticking its trunk in the water.

The rock is elephantine enough that some people think that it must have been shaped with human intervention. That is not the case, however. The elephant's realistic appearance is, at least partially, due to the fact that the cliff consists of basalt rock. The rock gives the figure "skin" that looks wrinkled and grayish, just like a real elephant.

A volcanic past

The most common hypothesis is that the elephant and other rock formations on Heimaey came from the Eldfell Volcano, which has erupted many times and continues to be active in the modern era. In 1973, an eruption caused significant damage to the island, and the harbor area was only saved by a dramatic cooling operation that solidified the advancing lava with ocean water before it reached the coast.

Heimaey is the largest land mass in Vestmannaeyjar, and it's the only island in the chain with a permanent human population. It has an airport and one of Iceland's most celebrated golf courses. The dramatic landscapes and easy access (the island is only four nautical miles from the mainland and is easy to reach via ferry) make it a popular destination for tourists.

4,000 people, lots of whales and millions of puffins

Despite the strong resemblance to an elephant, some people actually see something different when they look at the rock formation. They see the mythical character Cthulhu, a sea monster with tentacles on his face like a squid or octopus. Fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft featured this beast in short stories for pulp magazines in the 1920s. Whether you see an pachyderm or a fictional monster, the realistic appearance of this rock formation makes it stand out even among the other examples of Mother Nature's brilliance on the Westman Islands.

Though the rock does draw curious sightseers, it is only one of many attractions on Heimaey. You may see orcas in the water. Keiko, the orca who starred in the popular 1990s film franchise Free Willy, was actually released in the waters around Heimaey, but sadly failed to adapt and eventually had to be relocated. Tours that pass Elephant Rock cruise the coastal waters looking for marine mammals such as dolphins, orcas and other whale species.

Heimaey's biggest claim to fame is actually neither the whales nor the elephant. The island is home to 4,000 people and the world's largest population of puffins . These birds with their colorful, cartoon-like heads are the subject of an annual festival. During the summer, visitors shift their focus to the flocks of birds.

Some islanders still practice puffin hunting on the coastal cliffs, while others rescue the birds after they land in the island's main town. The puffins get confused by the lights of the village and land thinking it is some sort of reflection in the ocean. Instead of adding them to the menu, young locals catch the lost birds and release them back into the sea (some enterprising townsfolk even charge tourists to do the releasing). Children's author Bruce McMillan wrote a book called " Nights of the Pufflings " that celebrates the "catch and release" of the birds. (Pufflings are baby puffins).

Another popular pastime for tourists involves hiking up the Eldfell Volcano. The summit is just over 600 feet above sea level, so the mountain is accessible even to casual hikers. The island has well-marked trails, and you can even cross a lava field that covered houses in 1973 (the residents escaped, however). Locals have put markers so that visitors know when they are walking on top of a former settlement.

This rock in Iceland looks just like an elephant

Do you see the resemblance?

Places To Visit - Iceland

  • Caroline Shannon-Karasik
  • October 9, 2018

Nature produces everyday wonders that could cause most people to do a double take — a butterfly perched on a flower, a rainbow following a storm, a fiery orange sunset. But it’s not every day that you’re out and about and notice a rock shaped like a giant mammal.

But that’s the case in Iceland, where a volcanic sea cliff was formed by an eruption, carved by erosion and turned out looking a lot like an elephant. Yes, an elephant! And as visitor  @GoddessBibiche noted, “how cool is this?”

https://twitter.com/GoddessBibiche/status/1048066726162620416

The natural rock formation is located on Iceland’s Westman Islands, which are  approximately 4.6 miles  off of Iceland’s southern coast. The Westman Islands are comprised of 15 islands and about 30 reefs that were created by undersea volcanic activity. The largest of them, Heimaey, is also the only inhabited island of the bunch; Elephant Rock is at its southern tip.

“Elephant Rock fascinates visitors because it resembles the head of a giant elephant which has submerged half its trunk underwater in an attempt to quench its thirst with the Atlantic Ocean,” noted @earth.with.me via Instagram, adding that the rock’s likeness to an elephant is enhanced by the rock itself: The basalt makes the “skin” of the creature look tough and wrinkled, like a real elephant.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BkfQ3umBtQN/

And it’s not just the elephant’s face that bears the resemblance. The overhead view, captured here by  @SrBachchan , gives an even better view of the elephant’s body, tail and trunk.

T 2855 – Naturally Erupted Elephant Rock in Heimaey in Iceland .. pic.twitter.com/OeAH3cKZ5U — Amitabh Bachchan (@SrBachchan) July 2, 2018

Pretty amazing, right? The best way to see the elephant is on a boat tour of the Westman Islands, and several companies offer excursions  in the area. Of course, you’ll have to get to Iceland first; one popular way to get a taste of the country is  Icelandair’s stopover option , which lets ticketholders make a stop for a few days in Reykjavik on their way to another destination in Europe at no extra charge.

But if you can’t make it to Iceland to see the natural sculpture, then you should know the land of fire and ice isn’t the only place to boast an elephant-like rock. The Valley of Fire State Park in Clark County, Nevada, has a red sandstone formation that also looks a lot like an elephant, captured here by  @nozippbags .

Nature is incredible! Do you plan on adding Elephant Rock — either one — to your travel wish list?
