The 25 Best Moments From Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour

By Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone

From the moment it broke Ticketmaster, the world knew Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour would become the biggest of the year. Now, it’s on track to become the biggest pop music event of the next two years thanks to multiple international legs that wrap up back in North America next fall. Swift has not only been performing to sold out crowds in each stadium, but also to more thousands of ticketless fans hovering outside of venues or watching on social media from home.

She’s not even close to halfway through the tour, but she has already gone above and beyond her fans’ expectations thanks to multiple surprises, major announcements and special guest appearances that have made the tour’s first leg across the United States a major success. In honor of that historic run — and in chronological order — here are the best moments of Swift’s Eras Tour so far. Baby, let the games begin.

We Find Out The Show Is 3 Hours Long

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - MARCH 17: Editorial use only and no commercial use at any time. No use on publication covers is permitted after August 9, 2023. Taylor Swift performs onstage for the opening night of "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at State Farm Stadium on March 17, 2023 in Swift City, ERAzona (Glendale, Arizona). Along with the thousands of fans packed into Glendale’s State Farm Stadium for the first night of Eras Tour, there were even more watching the show from grainy Instagram and TikTok Lives. Swifties around the globe had no idea what to expect from the pop star’s new live show; she had released four albums of original music since her last tour in 2018, as well as re-recorded versions of two previous albums. Would she focus on 2022’s Midnights ? Would Folklore and Evermore even work in a stadium setting? Everyone was in for a treat as the night unfolded into 3.5 hours of Swift running through sets for all but her debut album (which did get some love during the surprise song portion that night). It felt like a fever dream for fans, making the Ticketmaster debacle even more worth the anxiety than anyone could have anticipated. –B.S.

Her ‘First Bridge of the Evening’ Speech

Every night this summer, just to seal our fate, Taylor has made a celebration out of the “Cruel Summer” bridge. As she declares, just a few minutes into the show: “We have arrived at the very first bridge of the evening! Now I would prefer that we cross it together!” A perfect invitation from a songwriter who has always made a specialty of her middle-eights. Later in the show, another highlight is when she does the “Illicit Affairs” bridge—not the rest of the song, just the “Don’t call me kid! Don’t call me baby!” chant in the middle. Who else could get away with that? We can’t wait for Taylor’s “Bridges Tour”—just four hours of her bridges. –R.S.

‘Cruel Summer’ Becomes a Top 10 Hit

taylor swift eras tour metlife

Hey, any artist can score a hit in the middle of a tour. But the trick is crashing the Top Ten with a fan-fave deep cut that’s four years old. Fans always wondered why “Cruel Summer” wasn’t a single—it sounded like the great lost hit from  Lover , the would’ve-could’ve-should’ve summer jam of 2019. But a year later, the world was in  Folklore  Mode and “Cruel Summer” got left behind—that hit that slipped away like a bottle of wine. Until now. Just in time for Eras Tour, she finally dropped it as a single. “Cruel Summer” blew up into her 41st Top Ten hit in July, reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Pop Airplay chart. A very Swiftian redemption arc for this perfect pop banger—ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard? –R.S.

Taylor’s Speech Defending Her Love For ‘Evermore’

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - MARCH 17: Editorial use only and no commercial use at any time. No use on publication covers is permitted after August 9, 2023. Taylor Swift performs onstage for the opening night of "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at State Farm Stadium on March 17, 2023 in Swift City, ERAzona (Glendale, Arizona). Evermore is to Folklore as Radiohead’s Amnesiac is to Kid A ; it’s the sister album that will always be pitted against its elder sibling. And there’s no Swiftie like an Evermore Swiftie. The album’s true fans will defend it to the grave, champagne problems and all. Fans were absolutely convinced Swift didn’t like Evermore when she didn’t commemorate its one-year anniversary on social media. But Taylor is always listening, and she wasted no time debunking this rumor, addressing it on night one of the Eras tour in Glendale, Arizona. “We’re currently in the middle of the Evermore album,” she told the crowd after “Marjorie.” “Which is an album I absolutely love, despite what some of you say on TikTok.” How’s that for some closure? –A.M.

The Lengthy Ovations After ‘Champagne Problems’

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 09: EDITORIAL USE ONLY. Taylor Swift performs onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at SoFi Stadium on August 09, 2023 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)

It happens every night. Taylor sits alone at the piano for “Champagne Problems,” her first solo performance of the night—and it always brings out the beast in the crowd. It’s a moment where the audience literally stops the show to scream, for minutes on end, leaving poor Taylor with no way to move on. In L.A. last week the ovation kept going for 8 minutes. (Never change, L.A.—you are the Dorothea of cities.) Since she doesn’t do a standard encore break, this is the crowd’s chance to grab the mic and go full blast—an unorthodox but totally organic moment. Like so many details of the Swiftian live experience, it’s a fan-created phenomenon that takes on a life of its own. It’s also proof that as far as the Eras Tour is concerned, sorry, but Evermore is more Era than any other Era. –R.S.

Marcus Mumford Sings ‘Cowboy Like Me’ In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 25: (EDITORIAL ONLY, NO COVERS) Marcus Mumford (R) performs with Taylor Swift during night two of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour on March 25, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by TAS Rights Management via Getty Images)

Taylor knew “Cowboy Like Me” was special the minute she wrote it — who else could get away with a line like “Some tent-like thing” and make it sound magical? She knew she was sitting on a 21st century “Desperado,” beloved by everyone from Maya Hawke to Maggie Rogers . The Western lullaby was recorded at Marcus Mumford’s Scarlet Pimpernel Studios, and he even provided backing vocals. So it was only right that he join her on the Evermore track’s live debut, early into the tour in Las Vegas on March 25. “Would you sing ‘Cowboy Like Me’ with me?” she asked. Mumford, who’d already performed it more than 50 times on his own tour , happily obliged .–A.M.

Taylor Replaces ‘Invisible String’ with ‘The 1’

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - MARCH 31: EDITORIAL USE ONLY Taylor Swift performs onstage during the "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at AT&T Stadium on March 31, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Omar Vega/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management )

In Swiftworld, few things happen without a reason, hidden or not. So when the fate-brought-us-together ballad “Invisible String” vanished from the Eras Tour setlist, replaced by the perfectly wistful masterpiece “The 1,” from the same album, it probably should’ve raised more eyebrows in the moment. Instead, it took certain headlines about Swift’s personal life, a week later, to make full sense of the very welcome swap.- -B.H.

The ‘And Take Her Home’ Note In ‘The 1’

CINCINNATI, OHIO - JUNE 30: EDITORIAL USE ONLY Taylor Swift performs onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour " at Paycor Stadium on June 30, 2023 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by Taylor Hill/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management )

Nobody, absolutely nobody, was complaining that “The 1” wasn’t heartbreaking enough. But for the live version, Taylor throws in The Note, for the kill. As she sings “The 1” on the mossy roof of her Folklore Cottage of Solitude, she adds that extra spice to the line, “You meet some woman on the internet and taaake her home.” As far as we’re concerned, this note is now “The 1” canon. The original Folklore version already sounds weird without it. –R.S.

Aaron Dessner’s Surprise Song Appearances

TAMPA, FLORIDA - APRIL 14: EDITORIAL USE ONLY Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner perform onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Raymond James Stadium on April 14, 2023 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Octavio Jones/TAS23/Getty Images for for TAS Rights Management)

When Aaron Dessner from the National came out in Tampa to bless the Eras Tour stage for the first time, Swifties in the stands and watching on live streams at home knew they were all in for a devastating set of Dessner-produced tracks. From an acoustic version of “The Great War,” to the poignant piano ballad “Mad Woman,” Dessner and Swift shined together on these stripped down versions of beloved songs. But the real kicker was “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve,” with Dessner jamming along on guitar and the entire Nissan Stadium screaming with Swift as she sang, “give me back my girlhood/ it was mine first!.” It was truly a moment for the history books. –M.G.

Taylor announces ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ in Nashville

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - MAY 05: EDITORIAL USE ONLY Taylor Swift performs onstage during night one of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour at Nissan Stadium on May 05, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by John Shearer/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)

Nashville turned purple when Swift decided to announce the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) during her Eras tour stop in her hometown on May 5. In typical Swiftian fashion, the singer used a play on words to reveal the album would be in July in the midst of her performance. “I think rather than me speaking about it, I thought I would show you, so if you would direct your attention,” she told an audience of screaming fans , while directing their attention to Nissan Stadium’s screens which featured the album cover and its release date. But Swift wasn’t done: She surprised fans by launching into a performance of “Sparks Fly.” And, oh, did they fly. –I.K.

Nashville Also Gets The First Rain Show of The Eras Tour

FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 20: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY, NO COVERS) Taylor Swift performs during The Eras Tour at Gillette Stadium on May 20, 2023 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by TAS Rights Management/Getty Images)

There is arguably nothing more Swiftian than rain; it’s a signature element to her lyrics. Swift used to play “Should’ve Said No” in a makeshift downpour on stage, and her first headlining rain show at Gillette Stadium is a thing of Swiftie folklore (it apparently inspired the fan-ode “Long Live”). Everyone was eagerly refreshing their weather apps to see if they’d be the Eras Tour stop to witness Taylor come in with the rain. Nashville night 3 got especially lucky. After lightning delayed the start of the show for several hours, Swift weathered the storm along with her hometown crowd. She was so drenched she compared herself to a “river otter” — and still put on one hell of a show that didn’t end until nearly 2 a.m. –M.G.

Tour Opener Phoebe Bridgers Sings Vault Duet ‘Nothing New’

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - MAY 06: EDITORIAL USE ONLY Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift perform onstage during night two of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour at Nissan Stadium on May 06, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by John Shearer/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)

On the first night in Nashville , Swift invited Phoebe Bridgers (“one of my favorite artists”) to perform their Red (Taylor’s Version) collaboration “Nothing New,” and emotions were running high. They were clearly both psyched to be sharing the stage: right before the song’s prophetic bridge, Swift laughed and mouthed “oh my god” while Bridgers shook her head in disbelief at the fact she was singing with one of her idols. At that moment, more than a few concertgoers had their inner child healed. It was so powerful that Swift snuck their performance into the set during every tour stop that Boygenius opened. –M.G.

The ‘Karma’ Video Premiere During the First New York Show

Fans attending Swift’s three night stint at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (which technically also counts as her New York tour dates, for surprise-song purposes) knew they were in for some unexpected highlights even before the first show kicked off. Leading up to that night, Swift announced the release of Midnights (Til Dawn) , an expanded version of her 2022 album that included a remix of “Karma,” featuring buzzy new rapper Ice Spice. In the middle of the show, Swift did more than shout out the new release: she decided to debut the “Karma” video in the middle of her set. Swift and her dancers sat on the stage to watch the video, which premiered on YouTube soon after. –B.S.

Jack Antonoff Appears For A Surprise ‘Getaway Car’

After Aaron Dessner made appearances earlier in the tour to perform with Swift during her surprise song sets, it was only a matter of time before Jack Antonoff did the same. Fittingly, it occurred on the first night of her New York shows, which were in Antonoff’s home state of New Jersey. Even better, his appearance ticked “Getaway Car” off the surprise song list, with Antonoff playing guitar on the Reputation cut and fan favorite. –B.S.

Ice Spice Appears Onstage For ‘Karma’ Remix

A “Karma” video premiere wasn’t enough for Swift as she celebrated Midnights (Til Dawn) over the course of her weekend in New York. She added an extra dose of excitement to show closer “Karma” when she invited Ice Spice out to perform the remix with her three nights in a row. The pair were a match made in pop heaven on stage together, with the 23-year-old rapper commanding the crowd perfectly next to the headliner. It didn’t take a lot for the two stars to make “Karma” a massive success, so it came as no surprise that the song shot up the charts a week later. –B.S.

Two Lucky Audiences Get to Hear ‘Clean’

Back in February, Gracie Abrams told Rolling Stone that her favorite 1989 track was “Clean.” Fast forward to April 1st: Taylor Swift made good on a request from Abrams to play the track after her first night opening shows on Swift’s stadium run. “I will remember this feeling in my bones for the rest of my life,” Abrams wrote on Instagram. And if “Clean” stans weren’t satisfied enough, Swift played the song again on the second night of her New Jersey stop, claiming with a smirk that she “could have played it in a higher key” as a way to avoid violating her rule about not repeating surprise songs. A worthy rare repeat for a classic 1989   track. –W.A.

The First Performance of ‘Dear John’ In 11 Years

With the surprise songs section of the Eras Tour, fans were anxiously awaiting the night when Swift would break out “Dear John,” her scathing anthem allegedly written about her ex John Mayer. With the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , Swiftie anticipation hit a fever pitch. Then, on June 24 in Minneapolis, they got their wish— hearing it live for the first time in 11 years . But with the performance of the song, Swift also had a disclaimer for her fans: She reminded them to consider “kindness and gentleness” when interacting online. “I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote,” Swift added. “So what I’m trying to tell you is that I’m not putting this album out so you should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.” In short, there’s no reason to be “mean.” –I.K.

Opener Gracie Abrams Gets Invited To Sing ‘I Miss You I’m Sorry’ With Taylor

What’s better than two surprise songs at an Eras Tour show? Three! At her July 1 date in Cincinnati, Swift not only debuted Evermore track “Ivy” and Reputation cut “Call It What You Want” for the first time in five years, but she shared the stage with Gracie Abrams and Aaron Dessner for a performance of her tour opener’s track “I Miss You, I’m Sorry.” While Abrams’ ballad is stunning on its own, Swift stole the show by alternating verses with the Good Riddance singer. –I.K.

That Taylor Lautner Cartwheel

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 07: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY) (L-R) Taylor Swift, Joey King and Taylor Lautner speak onstage for night one of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on July 07, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by John Shearer/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)

Even though he is one of Swift’s better exes, Lautner’s inserting himself into the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) conversation on social media (remember #prayingforjohn?) wasn’t a perfectly smooth process. But that didn’t stop Swift from bringing him out in Kansas City for a very cool and very full circle moment punctuated by a cartwheel that would have turned a less-athletic person’s bones to dust. Lautner told The Today Show that the cartwheel wasn’t planned, making it all that more impressive. Despite the seeming spontaneity of his on-stage acrobatics, the move did have some resemblance to the flip Lautner did in the 2010 flick Valentine’s Day , in which he co-starred with Swift. A reach? Maybe, but it’s very cool to see Lautner and Swift still in touch (Swift called Lautner and his wife “close friends”). Just maybe cool it on the #prayingfor TikToks.- -W.A.

‘I Can See You’ Video Premiere In Kansas City

During her tour stop in Kansas City on July 7 — the release date of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) — Swift surprised fans by premiering the heist-themed music video for “I Can See You,” which featured Taylor Lautner, Joey King and Presley Cash trying to steal her third album. It was one of the meta reunions for the “I Can See You” stars — King and Cash co-starred in the music video for “Mean,” while “Back to December” was allegedly about Swift’s breakup with Lautner. Of course, fans went wild when Swift sang Lautner’s praises to the Kansas City audience: “He was a very positive force in my life when I was making the ‘Speak Now’ album, and I want to say he did every single stunt that you saw in that music video. He and his wife have become some of my closest friends, and it’s very convenient because we all share the same first name.” –I.K.

‘Long Live’ Is Added To The Setlist

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 07: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Taylor Swift performs onstage for night one of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on July 07, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by John Shearer/TAS23/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)

The Eras Tour is as grandiose and impactful as any victory lap we’ve seen an artist put on in recent memory. The tour pulls on the nostalgia heartstrings — yes, there’s a percentage of fans who who tapped in when Folklore dropped, but there’s a great many more diehards who’ve been through middle school, high school, and college with Ms. Swift. That’s why hearing the “tell them how the crowds went wild/tell them how I hope they shine” in “Long Live” hits so hard. Even cooler: Swift is using the koi fish guitar from the Speak Now era . It’s funny to think about Swift writing such an anthemic ode to her career…in 2010. If only she knew there were thousands of sold out shows, a handful of Grammys, and hundreds of broken records to come. “Tell ’em how the crowds went wild” — they still are. –W.A.

‘Last Kiss,’ July 8th

When “Last Kiss” finally had its moment as a surprise song on July 8, you could hear the cries of Speak Now girlies heard round the world. Officially named “the saddest song [she’s] ever written” by Ms. Fountain Pen herself, Swift performed the somber track on her famous koi fish guitar and was so excited she forgot the lyrics and had to start over several times. Swift finally sang “that July 9th/The beat of your heart” with a small smirk because it was, in fact, July 8th that night — a sweet nod to the heart-wrenching moment in the song. –M.G.

Haim Appears Onstage For ‘No Body, No Crime’ In Seattle

On July 22, Swift’s murder ballad “No Body, No Crime” got its shining moment in Seattle when the singer brought out Haim to perform on their collaboration. Even better, their Evermore highlight wasn’t even one of the surprise songs of the evening: It was just a setlist swap for “Tis the Damn Season.” While it might be a coincidence—though with Swift it rarely is—they joined forces at Lumen Field exactly one year and a day after Swift shocked London fans by teaming up with the sisters for a “Gasoline”-”Love Story” mash-up. –I.K.

Taylor Gives ’22’ Hat to Kobe Bryant’s Daughter

Swift’s grace and generosity are now legendary . During her So-Fi Stadium show in Los Angeles on Aug. 3, the pop star gifted her Red -era bowler hat to Kobe and Vanessa Bryant’s daughter, Bianka during a performance of “22.” The sweet moment, which featured Swift hugging her and placing the hat on the six-year-old girl’s head, went viral, of course. It was one of those memories that we’ll be holding onto for a long time. –I.K.

The Dramatic Unveiling of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) On 8/9

Long before Eras Tour began, fans were racking their Easter egg-ridden brains to figure out which of Swift’s first six albums would be the next re-record to drop. Rightfully, many had been going back-and-forth on Speak Now and 1989 , and those who guessed the former were proven correct early in the tour. But Swift seemed to be dropping a suspicious number of hints at the possibility of more music, including several studio sightings on her off days. Ending the first US leg of Eras on 8/9 in Los Angeles also felt a little too on the nose. Thankfully, this time, everyone had decoded correctly. Swift unveiled 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in the most Taylor way possible, wearing blue versions of each Eras costume, a nod to the adopted color for 1989 . She finally revealed the new cover and release date after singing fan-favorite bonus track “New Romantics” during the surprise-song set, a perfect end to the first leg of this lengthy, massive trek .–B.S.

era tour quotes

A Swiftie does a fan chant for Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour.'

Don’t forget this new one for Travis Kelce.

Since 2018, Taylor Swift has released four new albums (not including the re-recorded ones), and is set to release a fifth: The Tortured Poets Department on April 19. The fandom has grown significantly with each album drop, which means there are plenty of baby Swifties attending The Eras Tour. To help educate the new members, OG fans are sharing what to bring to the Eras concert , cute concert ‘fit ideas , and all of the fan chants to know.

Fan chants are specific phrases typically shouted out during a live performance, and they exist for almost every single fandom. BTS ARMY has a fan chant that lists the names of each of the members, which is said before a song begins or during dance breaks. Sometimes, a fan chant can just be a popular lyric that fans like to scream-sing extra loud during a concert, like the bridge in “Keep Driving” for Harry Styles fans .

The fan chants for Taylor Swift include a few of those fave lyrics that are emphasized, but also some inside jokes mixed with clapping. Swifties have even added in some new ones for the Midnights era and Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce that many fans haven’t had the chance to say just yet in a concert.

Whether you’re new or just feeling a little rusty, here are all of the Taylor Swift fan chants to practice before you head to the stadium this year.

One of the Taylor Swift 'Eras Tour' fan chants is in "You Below With Me."

This is not necessarily a chant, but there is a double clap in “You Belong With Me” that has become a must-do for Swifties. This one you might have to practice at home with your friends, like TikToker @concertcrazedcaroline , to really get the timing down. It happens during the bridge.

Lyrics: “ Oh, I remember you driving to my house / In the middle of the night / I'm the one who makes you laugh / When you know you're 'bout to cry”

Fan Chant: *clap clap*

A fan chant that started to pop up because of Swift’s choreography on The Eras Tour is “summon the demons, b*tch.” It happens during Swift’s dance break right after the bridge in “Willow” during her evermore set. TikToker @allisonnicholez did it at her show, along with all the other chants.

Lyrics: “ But I come back stronger than a '90s trend”

Fan Chant: “Summon the demons, b*tch”

One of the most popular fan chants that comes from the reputation era is during Swift’s song “Delicate.” The inside joke actually originated from Swiftie Emily Valencia , who screamed out “one, two, three, let’s go b*tch” at the beginning of the song during a concert. The video of her screaming really took off, and now, even Swift expects to hear it from her fans.

Lyrics: “This ain't for the best / My reputation's never been worse, so / You must like me for me / We can't make any promises / Now can we, babe? / But you can make me a drink”

Fan Chant: “One, two, three, let’s go b*tch!”

There is a Taylor Swift fan chant for 'The Eras Tour' in "Don't Blame Me."

For many Swifties, going to The Eras Tour feels like a religious experience. That may be why this next fan chant has become so popular with this tour. It happens before the breakdown in “Don’t Blame Me,” right before there’s a heavenly glow of lights on the stage.

Lyrics: “Every time you're, every time you're lovin' me”

Fan Chant: “Take us to church, Taylor!”

If you’d like to partake in scream-singing a fan-favorite lyrics, there is one line in Swift’s 10-minute version of “All Too Well” that is beloved. It’s when she says, “F*ck the patriarchy” — obviously.

Lyrics: “And you were tossing me the car keys...”

Fan Chant: "F*ck the patriarchy!"

In a 10-minute-long song, of course, there is a second fan chant. This time, during “All Too Well,” you want to ask Swift, “How’d that make you feel,” before she says, “That made me want to die.”

Lyrics: “ You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine”

Fan Chant: “How’d that make you feel?”

There is a fan chant in "Style" for Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour.'

Some fan chants are like a call and response, like this one from “Style.” While it’s not as popular as some of the others, it is hilarious. Before Swift starts singing her 1989 hit, just yell out, “ What time is it? ”

Fan Chant: “What time is it?”

Lyrics: “ Midnight / You come and pick me up, no headlights”

Back in 2015, on the 1989 World Tour and during “Blank Space,” Swift did something special at the bridge of the song. Before going straight into “boys only want love if it's torture,” she would add some beats on loop along with chanting the name of the city she was in. Since Swift filmed her show in Sydney for the Taylor Swift: The 1989 World Tour Live film, it’s become an inside joke within the fandom to fan chant “Sydney” during any performance of “Blank Space.”

While that inside joke has kind of fizzled out over the years, it was brought back when Swift performed “Blank Space” in Sydney during the Eras Tour. The “Sydney” chant during the bridge was so loud that you could hear it crystal clear outside the stadium . This fan chant will likely continue for the rest of the 2024 Eras Tour shows, and you can either chant “Sydney” or add in your own city’s name.

Lyrics: “Boys only want love if it’s torture.”

Fan Chant: “Sydney!”

Swift sings the OG version of “Bad Blood” on The Eras Tour, but Swifties have been providing one of Kendrick Lamar’s lines from the remixed music video version as a fan chant. It’s when Lamar says, “You forgive, you forget, but you never let it go.” Since Swift released the remix with Lamar for 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , you know she loves it, too.

Lyrics: “Band-Aids don't fix bullet holes / You say sorry just for show / If you live like that, you live with ghosts”

Fan Chant: “You forgive, you forget, but you never let it go.”

A recent addition to the Eras Tour fan chant list is from when Swift yelled at a security guard at one of her concerts, while defending a fan. While the entire sound from the night went viral on TikTok, the “hey, stop” is specifically a fan fave and is something some Swifties yell out during “Bad Blood.”

Lyrics: “'Cause baby, now we've got bad blood”

Fan Chant: “Hey, stop!”

There is a new Taylor Swift fan chant during "Anti-Hero" for 'The Eras Tour.'

This fan chant originates from Bleachers’ remixed version of “Anti-Hero.” In this version, Swift’s bestie and collaborator Jack Antonoff says, “Taylor, you’ll be fine,” in the background. It happens during the second verse, so don’t get ahead of yourself. Just remember it goes after “congressman,” and replaces “tale as old as time.”

Lyrics: “ Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism / Like some kind of congressman?”

Fan Chant: “Taylor, you’ll be fine.”

Swift added this last fan chant when she replaced “guy on the screen” with “guy on the Chiefs” while singing “Karma” in Argentina. Kelce attended Swift’s Nov. 11 show in Buenos Aires, and the Midnights singer gave a nod to her boyfriend with the lyrical swap.

The OG line “karma is the guy on the screen” was a reference to Swift’s ex and actor Joe Alwyn , so it only seems fitting she’s switched it up with “guy on the Chiefs” to match her current partner. Swifties are loving so much that they’re now saying it during the concert , too.

Lyrics: “ Sweet like justice, karma is a queen / Karma takes all my friends to the summit.”

Fan Chant: “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs.”

Taylor Swift’s debut album made her America’s sweetheart of country music! She was just 16 years old when she made her debut, and at any given time, you could find her with curly hair and cowgirl boots.

1. Asking God if He can play it again

If you love “Our Song,” this is the perfect caption for you!

2. And when you think Taylor Swift, I hope you think of me

Taylor’s first-ever single was “Tim McGraw,” so this caption is super fitting. It’s definitely a throwback and a tribute to how far she has come!

3. I’m only me when I’m with you @taylorswift (or @ your girls!)

“I’m Only Me When I’m With You” is a lesser-known song on the debut album, so this one’s for the true Swifties!

Fearless continued Taylor’s reign as the queen of country music, but in this album, she expanded in her songwriting and solidified herself as the queen of breakup songs, too.

1. I don’t know how it gets better than this

The  perfect caption inspired by the song “Fearless” if you ask me!!

2. I had the best day with you today @taylorswift

“The Best Day” was a song that Taylor wrote for her mom, and it is the sweetest thing in the world.

3. Today was a fairytale

This song was from the  Valentine’s Day soundtrack, but Taylor includes it in her Fearless Era! Another perfect way to capture the feeling of the evening.

This era was all about saying what you mean and meaning what you say. In my opinion, the best part about the Speak Now album was the ballads that came from it — “Dear John,” “Haunted,” “Enchanted,” “Back to December,” I could go on and on!

1. I was enchanted to meet you

This one is  especially perfect if you are lucky enough to actually meet Taylor!!!

2. This night was sparkling, don’t you let it go

Another great line from “Enchanted” that makes the perfect caption.

3. I had the time of my life with you

One song I don’t think gets the justice it deserves is “Long Live.” Taylor wrote this song as a tribute to her fans, so this caption just feels right!

4. I said “remember this moment” in the back of my mind

Yet another line from “Long Live.” Perfection.

5. The crowds in stands went wild

Can’t stop won’t stop with the “Long Live” inspired captions!!!

6. Long live all the magic we made

Okay, this is the last one… I promise! The song is just too perfect since Taylor is singing about performing for her fans!

7. I’m captivated by you baby like a firework show

“Sparks Fly” is an elite track on  Speak Now , and I absolutely love this line!

When Taylor put out the  Red album, people started noticing some of the pop elements in her music. It wasn’t quite her transition album (that comes later with 1989), but it definitely has a different feel than her past albums! This is also when her red lipstick phase began, which is iconic.

1. It feels like the perfect night to dress up like hipsters and make fun of our exes

I love this caption if you get a group shot of you and your girlfriends!

2. I don’t know about you, but I’m feelin’ 22!

Perfect if you are actually 22, but also great no matter how old (or young) you are! Especially if “22” is your favorite Swiftie song.

3. It was the best night, never would forget how we moved

This is a lesser-known line from “Starlight,” but I think it’s ideal for a Taylor Swift concert because, trust me, you’ll be moving and grooving all night long!

4. I’m gonna remember it All Too Well

Oh. My. God. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) was my favorite thing to come from Taylor’s album remakes!!! It’s simply iconic. And the short film?! Don’t even get me started!!

5. We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time

Another fab line from “22!”

1989 was the album where Taylor officially transitioned genres from country to pop. This was a risky move, but the queen made it effortlessly!

1. We’ll never go out of style

Love this caption for a group shot! Flex those outfits, ladies!!

2. Living my wildest dreams with @taylorswift

Snap a pic of you with the stage in the background for this one!

3. Darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream

Another great caption to show off your look!

4. The lights are so bright, but they never blind me

This is a line from “Welcome to New York!”

5. I could dance to this beat forevermore

And another one from “Welcome to New York” – this one would be soooooo cute if you got a pic of you dancing!

6. We’re too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet

Or this one!! This is a line from “New Romantics,” which is on the deluxe version of  1989 .

Biiiiiig reputation.  Reputation was Taylor’s most risque album. It came out at a time when no one had physically seen Taylor for  over a year because she had gotten into such a public feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian causing her to receive a lot of insane backlash online. It was definitely a tough time for Taylor, but in my humble opinion, she rose from the ashes like a phoenix and created her best album yet. I’m definitely a Reputation girly!!

1. Are you ready for it?

This is a line from “…Ready For It?” and how Taylor began her Reputation tour!

2. I was, in fact, not ready for it

And if you were not ready for it because it was just that good, here you go.

3. Baby let the games begin

Another one from “…Ready For It?”!! Loooooove.

4. Only bought this dress so you could take it off

If you’re wearing a dress and want to be a little risque with your caption, use this one!

5. Look what you made me do

One of my personal favorite songs. Ugh, she’s just so cool!

6. 1, 2, 3 — let’s go b*tch

Okay, only my truuuue Swifties will understand this one. When Taylor sings “Delicate” in concert, fans yell out “1, 2, 3 — let’s go b*tch!” right before the first verse. You can also say “1, 2, 3 — let’s go @taylorswift” or tag one of your friends if you want to keep it G-rated!

7. Hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you

Such a sweet line from “New Year’s Day.”

Lover was a much softer album in contrast to Reputation . As a fan, I remember listening to Lover for the first time and feeling so happy for Taylor because it seemed as though she had really healed from the trauma she experienced. If you are going all-out with pastels and heart-shaped jewelry, these captions are for you!

1. It’s been a long time coming

In case you haven’t heard, Taylor opens the Eras Tour with “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince,” which is where this line comes from! Plus, we have been waiting foreverrrrr (okay, three years) for Taylor to tour again!

2. Call me Miss Americana

Another “Miss Americana” caption!

3. I promise that you’ll never find another like @taylorswift

You can also use the original line from “ME!” which is “I promise that you’ll never find another like me.”

4. We need to calm down

Perfect for the girlies who are just too dang excited for the concert to begin!!!

5. Eras Tour with my Lover

If you go to the Eras Tour with your significant other, this is such a cute caption!

era tour quotes

During the pandemic, Taylor came out with not one, but TWO albums, one of which was Folklore! This is more of a poetic, ethereal vibe.

1. You’ll find me on my tallest tiptoes

Looove this line from “Mirrorball.” Bonus points if you take a photo on your tiptoes!

2. Isn’t it just so pretty to think all along there was some invisible string tying you to me?

A line from “Invisible String” that I love! You can post a pic with your honey, your girls, or Taylor!

era tour quotes

The sister album to  Folklore was  Evermore , and on it were more of those lyrical, poetic songs that so many fans came to love!

1. ’tis the damn season (for a Taylor Swift concert)

“’tis the damn season” is a song on the  Evermore album, and let’s be honest – it’s always the damn season for a Taylor Swift concert!!!

2. @taylorswift wherever you stray, I follow

This line is from “willow!”

era tour quotes

Taylor’s newest album is Midnights, which is a total masterpiece! These songs are all about Taylor’s deepest fears, her innermost thoughts, and what keeps her up at night (hence the name of the album).

1. Meet me at midnight

I mean, come on!!!! This is the perfect caption for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

2. Best believe I’m still bejeweled

Where are my “Bejeweled” girlies?!

3. I can still make the whole place shimmer

Another great line from “Bejeweled” – perfect if you are wearing a sparkly outfit!

4. All of me changed like midnight rain

This concert is going to be life-changing, so this is a great caption to memorialize it.

5. Once upon a time the planets and the fates and all the stars aligned. @taylorswift and I ended up in the same room at the same time

Okay, this caption is a liiiiiittle long, but so cute! This line is from “Mastermind.”

6. That’s a real f*cking (or lasting) legacy

Totally up to you if you want to keep it PG or if you want to go full-on with the actual lyric, but either way, Taylor really does have an incredible legacy!! Btw, this is a line from “Maroon,” and in the original version, she does use the f-word, but she also has another radio version that replaces it with the f-word with “lasting!”

7. Survived the Great Wear (aka the worst failure in @ticketmaster history)

R.I.P. to the hours I spent in the Ticketmaster queue.

8. I just wanna stay in that lavender haze

If you get a photo with purple smoke or confetti, you HAVE to caption it with this!!!

9. Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it

ICYMI, friendship bracelets are a thing amongst Swifties at concerts! If you choose to, you can make friendship bracelets to trade with people you meet at the concert. But either way, this is a line from “You’re on Your Own Kid,” so it works!

10. And by the way, I’m going out tonight

Love love love this one for mamas who are getting a night out on the town!

11. Lately I’ve been dressing for revenge

Such a killer line from “Vigilante Shit!”

There are a few captions I love that don’t necessarily fit within a certain album, so if you haven’t found a caption you’re obsessed with yet, here are some more ideas!!

1. (Taylor’s Version)

Simple and to the point – so cute!

2. In my Swiftie era

Personally, I am  always  in my Swiftie era, but I think this is a great caption for anyone!

3. In my Eras era

Another good one highlighting the Eras Tour!

4. (Christina’s Version)

Just plug in your name here!!!

5. Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour (Christina’s Version)

Or use this one!

35 Thoughts I Had About Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Movie

By Emma Specter

35 Thoughts I Had About Taylor Swift's ‘Eras Tour Movie

When I heard that no less a Taylor Swift stan than Beyoncé had turned up to celebrate the release of the Eras Tour film at Los Angeles fixture The Grove this week, I resolved not to be long behind her. Sure, I couldn’t get myself into the celebrity-studded shenanigans at The Grove, but I could certainly pick a different movie-theater-in-a-mall (the Americana, specifically) and have myself some thoughts, all while enjoying the pleasures of a near-empty daytime showing.

Without further ado, here are the 35 thoughts I had at my 12:30 p.m. screening of The Eras Tour:

  • God, I should have anticipated this, but the other people seeing this movie at noon on a Friday are very clearly high schoolers cutting class.
  • Mega-charmed, despite myself, by Taylor kicking off the show with “Oh, hi!”
  • Okay, it’s been five minutes and I’ve already been transported to another world, and am regretting the fact that I didn’t have the money or moral fortitude required to nab Eras tickets.
  • Hey, Taylor said “Los Angeles”! That’s me, specifically!
  • So much of this woman’s job must involve the exhausting work of being nice to other people’s children.
  • Wait, this took place at the SoFi stadium? I guess that’s the only place in LA that can accommodate Peak Taylor.
  • I want a sequined silver blazer.
  • It would work for Taylor and Beyoncé concerts!
  • Okay, enough rationalizing.
  • Aw, heart hands!
  • “LA, are you ready to go back to high school with me?” NO!!!!!
  • Okay, “You Belong With Me” does go pretty hard, especially when Taylor acknowledges that many of its fans are 30 now. (Including me.)
  • All these women in the audience look so much happier than me :/
  • Then again, that’s probably how I looked at the MUNA concert on Wednesday :)
  • Evermore era just hit!
  • I need someone on TikTok to educate me at length about Taylor’s moss piano.
  • Okay, this mustard corset dress is major (not a sentence I ever expected to write).
  • Do Taylor’s bangs change once per era, or am I seeing things?
  • Should I get a one-legged sequin catsuit like Taylor’s for Halloween that I gradually just phase into everyday wear?
  • “LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO”!
  • I’m humiliatingly dancing in my seat.
  • Thank God I’m alone in the back row.
  • Oh no, I’m identifying way more with the moms than the daughters in the audience.
  • Is this how aging comes for you? Slowly, then all at once, at the Eras Tour movie?
  • Oh, thank God, “22” is on to distract me from my mortality.
  • Another sparkly little jumpsuit I want!
  • Would a tiny sequined cape look good on me?
  • Sorry, okay, no more fashion reverie.
  • This slide-slash-roof Taylor is perching on looks terrifying, but then again, I’m a known coward about heights.
  • Folklore cabin :)
  • When Taylor said “August slipped away like a bottle of wine,” she meant it. (Literally how is it mid-October?)
  • Sequin Watch: Now Taylor’s backup dancers are wearing long, glittery black coats I covet.
  • Aw, I can see multiple people crying in the audience.
  • OMG, “Shake It Off”!
  • Okay, now I’m one of the crying people.

9 Things To Chant At Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Shows

If you don’t know when to scream “Taylor, you’ll be fine,” then you shouldn’t be going to the Eras Tour.

Taylor Swift performs during opening night of the Chicago Eras Tour at Soldier Field on June 2, 2023...

Going to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour takes months of preparation, patience, and endurance training. First, you must have survived “The Great War” with Ticketmaster and actually nabbed tickets, then you need to wait in hours-long merch lines , even if you’re buying that coveted blue crewneck days before the show. And lastly, you need to study all of the Eras Tour chants and lyrics to scream, especially if you’re not a natural-born Swiftie. If not, your Swiftie concert buddy might be disappointed in you if you don’t come prepared.

Aside from singing along to the entire 44-song setlist , Swift’s fans have also been shouting slogans and screaming some lyrics extra loudly at the Eras Tour which may sound more foreign to the more casual attendee. But in reality, it’s a testament to the strength and bond of the Swiftie community, and one of the many things connecting Swift to her audience every night. Some of these chants are long-standing traditions from previous Swift tours, while others have been inspired by viral moments and performances from the Eras Tour itself, like when Swift scolded a security guard for bothering a fan.

If you don’t spend your weekends watching Instagram live streams of the Eras Tour to prepare for your show (or relive the memories), here are all of the most important lyrics and chants to memorize for your own show.

The Bridge Of “Cruel Summer”

When : “Cruel Summer”

Why : Because Swift tells you to.

How it started : Fans have been waiting to scream the epic, cinematic bridge of “Cruel Summer” for nearly four years, and Swift didn’t want to make fans wait for a second longer, making the Lover deep cut the second song of the show and asking fans to sing the “first bridge of the night” with her.

The Double-Clap

When : “You Belong With Me,” after Swift sings “When you know you’re ‘bout to cry” in the bridge.

Why : Because it’s been a long-standing Swiftie tradition.

How it started : Swift’s band started clapping twice during “You Belong With Me” way back in 2009 during the Fearless Tour, matching the random drumbeat in the bridge. She hasn’t brought out the song on every tour since, but when she does, the clap is a must for every Swiftie in the audience.

“1, 2, 3, Let’s Go B*tch!”

When : “Delicate,” after the vocoder-ed intro.

Why : Because Swift put “Delicate” on the setlist specifically so you could scream this.

How it started : Swiftie Emily Valencia randomly screamed this at Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour show at the famous Rose Bowl in May 2018 and posted the video on Twitter. The rest is history. Now, Swift and her dancers often mark the countdown with their fingers. “It’s the weirdest thing, but that’s what happened,” Valencia told BuzzFeed in March.

“F*ck The Patriarchy!”

When : “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” when Swift also sings the lyric.

Why : Does this one require an explanation?

How it started : This classic expression was one of the more surprising new lyrics on the 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” and always made for emotional concert screaming.

Your City Name

View on TikTok

When : “Blank Space,” after every line in the bridge.

Why : Because it’s so oddly satisfying.

How it started : While performing “Blank Space” on The 1989 World Tour, Swift showed off her looping device by shouting the name of the city she was performing in, which then repeated on the speakers during the bridge. Somehow, it’s very catchy and doesn’t at all disturb the flow of the song.

“Hey, Stop!”

When : “Bad Blood,” during the second chorus.

Why : Because Swift yelled this at a security guard during an Eras Tour show, and it’s fun to replicate.

How it started : At her May 13 show in Philadelphia, Swift noticed fans being bothered and pushed back by a security guard for simply dancing, and she didn’t let him get away with it. “She wasn’t doing anything,” she yelled at the guard mid-song, along with multiple requests to “stop!” The demands caught on as a hilarious new chant, complete with fan-made merch on Etsy .

“You Forgive, You Forget, But You Never Let It Go”

When : “Bad Blood,” after the first time Swift sings, “If you live like that, you live with ghosts” during the bridge.

Why : Kendrick Lamar chants this during Swift’s bridge on the “Bad Blood” remix.

How it started : Swift performed the normal version of “Bad Blood” on her 1989 and Reputation Tours in 2015 and 2018, but fans have kept the spirit of her remix with Lamar alive by singing his line during the bridge back to Swift, a tradition that has continued on the Eras Tour.

“Taylor, You’ll Be Fine!”

When : “Anti-Hero,” after Swift sings “like some kind of Congressman” in the second pre-chorus.

Why : Because even Swift needs some support from time to time.

How it started : Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff sings this as a response to Swift’s lyrics on his remix of “Anti-Hero,” in place of Swift singing “Tale as Old as Time.” Some fans adopted this as a show of support as Swift sings her 40th song of the night (yes, 40th).

When : “Karma,” after Swift sings “Karma takes all my friends to the summit” in the bridge.

Why : Because Mama Swift (meaning Swift’s literal mother) does this.

How it started : On her remix of “Karma,” Ice Spice provides a new verse filled with quotable lines and some background ad-libs on Swift’s part. However, nothing made Swifties laugh more than when she simply stated “facts” during the bridge, which Swift’s mom has turned into the latest Eras Tour chant. If it’s good enough for her, it should become a tradition for us all.

All the References in Taylor Swift’s Title Track ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Night One Of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Los Angeles, CA

A re you ready for it? Taylor Swift ’s 11th studio record, The Tortured Poets Department , is finally here, and it’s clear she has a lot to say about her recent bouts of heartbreak. On the (surprise!) double album ’s title track, she’s specifically focused on a breakup with someone who isn’t her longtime love Joe Alwyn . The references on “The Tortured Poets Department” seem to point to a different London boy : The 1975’s Matty Healy , who, if he knows what’s good for him, will stay off the internet for a few days because people definitely have feelings about Swift going long on their two-month situationship which ended last June.

But Healy’s not the only one who gets a shout out on track 2, a melodramatic ode to a guy who, for better or worse, is cut from the same cloth as her. And just like that one of the greatest Welsh poets of all time, an iconic punk rocker, and Charlie Puth have all earned themselves a spot in Swiftian lore.

Below, an explanation of all the references you need to make sense of “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Matty Healy

Who uses typewriters anyway? Well, Tom Hanks , for starters, but let’s assume Swift isn’t writing love songs about the nicest guy in Hollywood leaving one at her apartment. All signs point to Healy, who told GQ five years ago that a typewriter is one of the things he can’t live without. (Interestingly enough, in that same interview, he talked about his notebook, another thing he cherishes, being mostly full of “stories that I write about my dreams of being in love with other pop stars.”) The fact that the man in this song left one of his favorite things at Swift’s home feels like a sign pointing to just how head over heels he was for her. Too bad she’s more of a quill pen kind of girl .

For another clue that Healy is the object of this song’s affection, look no further than Swift’s later reference to her man being “a tattooed golden retriever.” Healy, who is covered in tattoos , certainly fits the bill. Not to mention, he has ink inspired by one of the original Beat poets William S. Burroughs, who could certainly be described as tortured . But it’s a rather interesting analogy to make being that, in dating parlance, golden retrievers are known to be wholly loyal, supportive, goofy, and laidback, which doesn’t quite fit with The 1975 singer’s chaotic public persona . It does, on the other hand, sound more than a bit like someone else Swift knows . (This song is not about her current beau, though fans sure think “The Alchemy” is.)

Dylan Thomas

Swift may be hopelessly devoted to her new guy, but what she makes clear on the title track’s rather scathing chorus is that Dylan Thomas he is definitely not , going so far as to laugh in his face for being delusional enough to ever think such a thing. (It’s worth noting that Healy has been known to dabble in poetry .) The wildly popular Welsh poet, who got his start in the 1930s, was known for his hyper emotional style of lyrical poetry that was full of clever wordplay and visual imagery. He was considered a New Romantic for the way in which used the Romantic era of the late 18th century and early 19th century as inspiration to create a literary style all his own. One of his most famous works is 1931’s Do not go gentle into that good night , which urges readers to fight bravely against death no matter when it comes.

Perhaps, after reading his poetry, you won’t be surprised to learn that Thomas had a reputation for being quite the tormented artist. As he got older, he struggled with alcoholism , which led him to act erratically. His friends would say his drinking was his way of coping with his shyness, depression, and financial instability. In her 1982 memoir, Thomas’ wife, Caitlin Thomas, said that her marriage to the poet “was not a love story proper; it was more of a drink story.” When she died 12 years later, the New York Times would describe her as Thomas’ “drinking and brawling partner.”

Thomas died in 1953 at the age of 39 after collapsing at Manhattan’s Chelsea Hotel where he had an apartment. The legend goes that he drank 18 whiskies in a row and went into a coma, dying of acute alcohol poisoning. (Fun fact: Swift’s friend and Eras Tour opener Phoebe Bridgers released a song called “Dylan Thomas” in 2019 with her band Better Oblivion Community Center that nods to his much mythologized demise. Spoiler: this isn’t the track’s only connection to Bridgers.) However, it is now believed that Thomas died of pneumonia that had gone undiagnosed by his physician.

Patti Smith

Swift is undoubtedly one of music’s best modern songwriters, but on this track she makes it clear she has nothing on Patti Smith , who’s been called a “ punk poet laureate ” thanks to her 1975 debut, Horses, a clever blend of free form poetry and punk rock. But Smith is more than a charismatic musician , she is the author of several poetry collections and books including two bestselling memoirs, 2010’s Just Kids, which focused on her early life and friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe , and 2012’s M Train , which looked at her life and career after Horses.

Smith has never topped the music charts, but she has won countless awards for her work, including the National Book Award in 2010 and, the following year, the prestigious Polar Music Prize , often called “the Nobel Prize of Music.” (Like Dylan Thomas, she also spent some time at the Chelsea Hotel, but we’ll save that for a little later.) Clearly, there is no shame in feeling a little inadequate compared to her. It’s just a wee bit surprising to hear that a newly minted billionaire pop star who has basically broken every musical record feels that way. Smith seems to be in Swift’s camp as well. In 2019, she came to Swift’s defense after the latter was criticized for not being more politically outspoken. “She’s a pop star who’s under tremendous scrutiny all the time,” Smith told the New York Times . “And one can’t imagine what that’s like.”

The Chelsea Hotel

It’s safe to say, the infamous residence hotel located in, as its name suggests, the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan would be a fitting headquarters for the Tortured Poets Department. Built between 1863 and 1865, the newly renovated 12-story hotel has long been a respite for promising artists like Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, and Thomas Wolfe who were looking for cheap rent and few frills as they pursued the bohemian lifestyle.

Playwright Arthur Miller, who stayed there for six years following his 1961 divorce from Marilyn Monroe , called it “the high spot of the surreal.” He meant this quite literally; more than a few times he had gotten high off the marijuana smoke that often wafted through the halls. “There are no vacuum cleaners, no rules and shame,” Miller said of the place where he would end up writing the play After the Fall .

The Chelsea Hotel is also where Bob Dylan wrote Blonde on Blonde , Andy Warhol shot parts of his experimental film Chelsea Girls , and Sid Vicious allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen to death. As previously mentioned, Dylan Thomas and Patti Smith both lived there, but they never crossed paths. Sixteen years after Thomas’ death, Smith moved into room 1017, the smallest in the hotel, with Mapplethorpe for a rate of $55 per week. “The Chelsea was like a dollhouse in the Twilight Zone, ” Smith wrote in Just Kids. “With a hundred rooms, each a small universe.”

Shortly after Swift’s new album dropped, the Chelsea Hotel excitedly posted on their Instagram Story that they were “screaming” over the song, which they were turning way up, and “ready to welcome Swifites.”  Those who are looking to book a room for a night will pay at least five times what Smith did 55 years ago.

Jack Antonoff

On “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift’s closest confidante is “Jack,” which is undoubtedly a reference to her friend and longtime producer Jack Antonoff , who has worked on all four of the re-recordings of her old albums (aka the “Taylor’s Versions” ), as well as seven records of all original material, including her latest. (He is a co-writer on the title track.) He also produced The 1975’s 2022 album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, making him someone who knew both parties intimately.

If Entertainment Tonight ’s sources are to be believed , Antonoff was the matchmaker who brought the musical duo together. And there are clues that he was there from the very beginning of this short-term relationship. Antonoff was hanging out with Swift and Healy at members-only Casa Cipriani in New York, where they were first spotted holding hands . Days later, the two were again photographed together, this time leaving Electric Lady Studios where Swift was recording with Antonoff.

Thanks to Swift’s shoutout on the title track, it’s safe to assume things might have been a little awkward for Antonoff after the two split up. Being that Healy did not attend Antonoff’s wedding this past summer but Swift did, one could venture to guess that she got custody of Jack in the breakup.

All the proof Taylor Swift is making first major change to Eras Tour

Welcome to "The Tortured Poets Department" (Eras Tour Version).

era tour quotes

It looks like Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour is getting a brand new era, straight from the Tortured Poets Department .

Since the announcement of her new 11th studio album ( which dropped April 19 ), fans have been anxiously waiting to see if her worldwide, career-spanning tour would get a shakeup to accommodate the new music. While Swift is remaining mum, and a rep for the singer didn't respond to an EW request for comment, a new YouTube Short posted to Swift's account seems to provide all the clarity Swifties needed that a change is imminent.

In the video, which is part of Swift's #ForAFortnightChallenge tied to the album's first single, "Fortnight," the 14-time Grammy winner can be seen rehearsing for tour with her backup dancers. While some shots are obviously from the Folklore , Lover , and other existing "eras" of the show, several blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments have never been seen before.

In one, Swift, clad in workout gear, appears to be wearing the same boots seen in her "Fortnight" video . She's holding on to a banister that looks like it has the Tortured Poets Department emblem on it — the "P" and the "D" can just be made out.

taylor swift/youtube

Although the video is in grayscale, and therefore exact colors are impossible to identify for sure, several shots feature what looks like a new white-ish mic, which has never been seen before. The new era's color, of course, is also an off-white hue.

Perhaps the most interesting moment of the new clip, though, is one that features what looks like new choreography and costumes. Swift's backup dancers can be seen in top hats and dancing with canes, while she sings in the front middle of the group — choreography and props which have so far not been featured in the concert.

This is all speculative until the tour resumes in Paris, France, on May 9, of course, but if Swift is adding a whole new era, it would mark the first major change to the setlist since Swift began performing it last March.

Throughout the tour, she's made little swaps here or there: She added performances with some of the artists who opened for her like HAIM or Phoebe Bridgers, and she added "Long Live" to the Speak Now section when that re-recorded album released during tour. She also swapped out "Invisible String" for the "The 1" in the Folklore section after news of her split with Joe Alwyn broke.

But, nothing has majorly been added or subtracted from the show, which is already a whopping three-and-a-half hours long. Now, if anyone could pull off adding more runtime to Eras, it's the "Mastermind" herself, but it's more likely that some songs will be getting cut to make room for new material. Fans have theorized that the tracks that didn't make it into the VOD rental of the Eras Tour concert film — "The Archer," "Wildest Dreams," "Cardigan," and "Long Live" — could be first on the chopping block, but we'll just have to wait and see what Ms. Swift has up her cryptic and Machiavellian sleeve.

era tour quotes

Taylor Swift opened the Eras Tour at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona — which rebranded itself as "Swift Cit y" for the March 17 and 18 concerts — with a triumphant return to live performance as the first act in the history of that venue to sell out two nights on the same tour.

By that point, she'd already broken the all-time record for most concert tickets sold by an artist in a single day and passed Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour as the highest-grossing tour in history by a female artist.

And Swift rose to the occasion , leading her band through a marathon 44-song set that lasted more than three hours while delivering on her promise of "a journey through all of my musical eras."

So what does she do for an encore? Here's where the Eras Tour is headed next, adding two surprise songs to the set at each show. Here's a look at what she's played so far .

Musicians Are in Their Eras Era

From Taylor Swift to Madonna to Missy Elliott, stars are increasingly blurring the lines between past and present.

There was a time, not so long ago, when the term “era” brought to mind strictly academic concepts: a scale to measure the Earth’s geological time; a system for classifying sweeping events of human history; a theoretical timeline of our known universe.

a woman wearing a beaded headdress and bra

If this trend has a progenitor, it’s Taylor Swift : The musician’s career-spanning Eras Tour is reportedly the highest-grossing tour of all time. “Branding it as the Eras Tour and doing a greatest-hits run pulled in so many people, because you go to a show and it’s so clear how many fans came from the country years, and how some didn’t become Swifties until Reputation ,” says Elana Fishman, Page Six style editor and bona fide Swiftie. And Swift didn’t just revisit those eras musically; she also paid homage to the aesthetics of each album cycle, whether through a Reputation -era snake slithering across a Roberto Cavalli catsuit or a sequined matching set that called back to her 1989 persona.

Of course, Swift didn’t invent the idea of tying fashion to different album cycles—that would be Madge, the Queen of Pop herself. Madonna committed to changing everything—from hairstyle to makeup to wardrobe—for each new record cycle, as if creating characters, in a way that few have achieved before or since. “Other artists have also had eras, but they may have had the same hair color throughout all of them. It doesn’t really count,” says creative director and stylist Shannon Stokes, who’s worked with Beyoncé , Rihanna , and SZA . “To me, those are great, and those can still be considered eras, but as a true textbook, you always have to go to Madonna.”

For Stokes, creating and revisiting these visually disparate eras isn’t just useful in distinguishing album cycles, it also creates a fuller picture of the artists themselves. Fans feel more connected to a multifaceted musician. “When you’re doing everything properly, people get to see who you are in all different [areas] of your life: your sexual sides, your fun sides, your vulnerable sides, your introspective sides,” he explains. “It creates a stronger bond, because that fan base feels like they know you more, seeing all sides of your personality.”

It’s notable that there are very few male artists playing with visual identity in quite the same way. While there are some, like Harry Styles or Lil Nas X, dabbling in tying fashion to album cycles, Paul McCartney isn’t exactly hauling out a Sgt. Pepper jacket on his tours. Maybe female stars feel more pressure to constantly reinvent themselves. Or maybe they’re embarking on a high-stakes version of what we all do when embarking on a makeover. Whether it’s a post-breakup closet cleanse or a big-ticket luxury purchase to celebrate a milestone, our clothes reflect who we are at different moments in time—and revisiting those pieces can be liberating, not to mention a fun way of remembering our former selves.

“We, as regular people, have had eras too,” Stokes says. “It’s an evolution, but you still can differentiate the time periods when you were living a certain way and therefore dressing a certain way and doing certain things.” While she may not have invented the wheel, Swift has discovered how to put her own spin on it, keeping fans engaged in the process. She’s taught followers to hunt for clues about upcoming album cycles in her clothes, fueling speculation that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) would be her next re-release with a pair of Jimmy Choo x Jean Paul Gaultier boots—or announcing her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department , with a white Schiaparelli gown at the Grammys.

a woman wearing a sheer bodysuit performs in front of a projected target

“A few months before the album rollout really starts, she’ll solidify what her aesthetic is going to be for that era,” Fishman says. “It keeps people hooked, because they’re decoding these clues and zooming in on Getty Images of her paparazzi walks and saying, ‘Is that a snake on her ring, or is it just a vine twisting?’ It becomes a real game.”

And while reinvention may still be all the rage among younger artists, one thing is for sure: There’s no longer a reason to fear history repeating itself. This article appears in the May 2024 issue of ELLE.

Will Taylor Swift add 'Tortured Poets' to international Eras Tour? Our picks.

era tour quotes

A double album. Thirty one songs. Two hours and two minutes. In the spaces between the international, record- breaking Eras Tour, Taylor Swift released her 11th era: "The Tortured Poets Department." But will the behemoth tour make room for the newest addition to Swift's vast catalog and how?

"The Tortured Poets Department" showcases the singer's mastery to connect words like puzzle pieces seamlessly depicting the human experience and complex themes of false wedding promises, relationship imprisonment, break-ups and drug escapism, religion versus rebellion, childhood retrospection and the duality of internally suffering while externally performing. It would be a surprise for her not to push this body of art into the spotlight.

But how it fits into the 44-song three hour and 15-minute Eras tour is anyone's guess. And we won't find out until she resumes the tour on May 9 in Paris. I'll be there.

Read Melissa Ruggieri's review Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' is hauntingly brilliant, even the 15 surprise songs

Whether or not she's incorporating the era has already been decided. Swift is 13 steps ahead . She plans her moves years in advance. There is a two-month break from the tour and she has been spending time in Los Angeles. Her team of dancers have not been as active on social media possibly because they're rehearsing a new set. Or maybe it's a coincidence?

The simplest path would be to absorb some of the the 31 songs into the acoustic set that comes after "Bad Blood" during the "1989" era. Swift has used the 2024 surprise songs to play mash-ups on the guitar and the piano. It's when she makes announcements and it's a custom gift to concertgoers and fans watch in envy on livestreams from around the world.

'Tortured Poets' release live updates What to know as Taylor Swift's new album debuts

More likely, she will add a "Tortured Poets" set. The show is segmented, allowing a new era to squeeze in. She could open the show with the new era, although "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince's" opening line is a perfect opening for an artist who has released seven albums and hasn't seen fans: "It's been a long time coming." She could end the show with the set, but "Karma" is a good show closer.

Cue the confetti. If she ends the tour with "Tortured Poets," I'm guessing "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" is the closer.

The writing shines bright like Swift's glittering sequin stars which is reminiscent of and relative to "Folklore" and "Evermore." For the flow of the concert, it makes more sense to not place "Tortured Poets" next to these albums. The show flows with a narrative that spans almost two decades with highs and lows of energy. Two areas that could be good: after "Reputation" and before "Speak Now" or after the secret songs and before "Midnights." Maybe she dives into the stage to swim to the an asylum of typewriters and tormented thoughts.

The four eras with the most amount of songs are the latest records she owned that aren't re-records: "Lover" (six songs), "Folklore" (seven songs), "Evermore" (five songs) and "Midnights" (seven songs). Will she follow that flow? Will she cut songs from these eras?

I could see her performing the lead single "Fortnight," title track "The Tortured Poets Department," Eras Tour song "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," "Down Bad," "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me," "thanK you aIMee" and "So High School."

Swift holds the answer key. Sixty-nine shows are left on the recording shattering magnum opus for 2024.

7 the tortured poets department songs that must be added to taylor swift: the eras tour.

Certain songs on Taylor Swift's new double album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, were made to be performed live on The Eras Tour.

  • Taylor Swift accompanied the release of her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, with a surprise second installment containing 15 extra songs.
  • Assuming Taylor Swift incorporates the new album into The Eras Tour set list, some songs from The Tortured Poets Department are better suited to be performed live than others.
  • Songs like "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me?" would make for thrilling, captivating performances on The Eras Tour.

If Taylor Swift decides to incorporate her new double album, The Tortured Poets Department, into her shows on The Eras Tour , there are certain songs she must add to the set list. Two hours after Swift's highly anticipated eleventh studio album was released at midnight on April 19, 2024, the songstress dropped a surprise second instalment containing 15 brand-new songs. Combined with the 16 original tracks, there are 31 songs on The Tortured Poets Department : The Anthology double album.

Now that she's embarked on this new musical era, The Tortured Poets Department will have to be incorporated into the live show somehow when Swift goes back on The Eras Tour on May 9, 2024. It's unlikely that she will add a whole extra set considering The Eras Tour concert is already three-and-a-half hours long , but she may adjust the existing set list to make room for TTPD. At the very least, Swift is guaranteed to perform some selections from TTPD as surprise songs during her acoustic sets on tour.

If Swift does incorporate The Tortured Poets Department into the permanent set list, though, the Folklore and Midnights sets are the most at risk of receiving cuts since they're tied for the longest eras with seven songs each. As the maximum for any set on The Eras Tour right now, seven is the most songs Swift can reasonably be expected to add from TTPD to the set list. For her selections, these seven songs from The Tortured Poets Department would translate best to a live performance on The Eras Tour.

The Eras Tour Movie Creates 1 Huge Challenge For Taylor Swift's Next Era

7 but daddy i love him, written by taylor swift & aaron dessner.

On "But Daddy I Love Him," Swift seems to be responding to the general public's unsolicited disapproval of her dating certain men using the trope of a stubborn teenager rebelling against her disapproving parents. The song gives off Fearless vibes, particularly the Romeo & Juliet -centered "Love Story" due to their shared forbidden love narrative, and resembles "august" from Folklore in terms of the production, both of which make for great performances on The Eras Tour.

Many fans have speculated that this song might be about Swift's short-lived public relationship with The 1975 frontman, Matty Healey, in the spring of 2023.

Of every song on The Tortured Poets Department, "But Daddy I Love Him" feels the most fit to be performed live . While listening to the theatrical track, it's easy to visualize what a live performance would look and sound like. The lively, melodramatic chorus and post-chorus were made to be sung in a stadium in front of thousands and the end of the bridge conjures images of Swift frolicking around onstage à la "august" if the instrumental was extended.

Since she borrowed the title from Ariel in The Little Mermaid, a version of which Allie quotes in The Notebook, Swift could include an intro of these characters reciting the titular line before performing "But Daddy I Love Him."

This song also presents so many opportunities for Swift to create a memorable concert experience. Since she borrowed the title from Ariel in The Little Mermaid , a version of which Allie quotes in The Notebook , Swift could include an intro of these characters reciting the titular line before performing "But Daddy I Love Him" or even reference them in her costume. Swift teasing the audience with " you should see your faces " after the fake out about " having his baby " is also poised to become an instantly iconic moment if she performed this song on The Eras Tour.

10 Taylor Swift Songs I Really Wish Were In The Eras Tour Movie

6 florida (featuring florence + the machine), written by taylor swift & florence welch.

Of the two tracks with featured artists on The Tortured Poets Department, "Florida!!!" featuring Florence + The Machine blows the album opener "Fortnight" featuring Post Malone out of the water. This ode to the Sunshine State is already an intoxicating song to listen to on the album, and it would be ten times more exhilarating to experience live on The Eras Tour.

Even if she doesn't add it to the set list, Swift is guaranteed to perform "Florida!!!" as a surprise song during the acoustic set at one of her Miami shows, though.

If Swift added "Florida!!!" to the set list, the crowd stomping their feet along with the heavy drums on the chorus before belting out the titular lyric in unison, exclamation points and all, would be an unforgettable moment every night on The Eras Tour. The line " f**k me up, Florida " that repeats on the bridge and serves as the final lyric of the song would also feel liberating to shout out loud in a crowd setting, especially for the attendees at Swift's three stops in Miami, Florida, between October 18 to 20, 2024.

Sadly, Swift is unlikely to add "Florida!!!" to the permanent set list since Florence + The Machine will not be joining her on The Eras Tour. She could still perform the song solo and sing Florence's parts herself, but this is a long shot since there are no songs on the set list that originally have featured artists. Even if she doesn't add it to the set list, Swift is guaranteed to perform "Florida!!!" as a surprise song during the acoustic set at one of her Miami shows, though.

Swift has brought out opening acts like Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM to perform their duets with her ("Nothing New" and "no body, no crime," respectively) during the main show on The Eras Tour, but these were not permanently added to the set list.

Taylor Swift's Next Album Sets Up A New Eras Tour Movie Cameo That Would Make Up For Cutting HAIM

5 who's afraid of little old me, written by taylor swift.

While most of the songs on The Tortured Poets Department most fit for a live performance are more on the upbeat and lighthearted side, "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is the polar opposite. On this haunting track, Swift ruminates on her experience in the spotlight and the treatment she's received as a public figure, calling out the hypocrisy of those who villainize her.

The whole song would make for a chilling, powerful live performance, but hearing Swift scream the titular lyric on the chorus of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" would be on another level.

"Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is delivered with the same exasperated rage underneath a devilish grin as most of the songs from Swift's Reputation era , especially the pre-chorus, " If you wanted me dead, you should've just said/Nothing makes me feel more alive ." The whole song would make for a chilling, powerful live performance, but hearing Swift scream the titular lyric on the chorus of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" would be on another level.

The song is both sonically and thematically similar to "mad woman" from Folklore, as well. Though Swift does not perform "mad woman" on The Eras Tour, a good basis for comparison for how "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" would feel live is Swift's harrowing performance of "my tears ricochet" from the Folklore set, which the TTPD track also resembles. All of these songs that bear similar themes, subject matter, and overall vibe as " Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" show how the TTPD track would translate perfectly to a live performance.

4 Imgonnagetyouback

Written by taylor swift & jack antonoff.

On "imgonnagetyouback" from the second installment of The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, Swift schemes to get her ex back, though she's uncertain of her intentions for doing so. "Imgonnagetyouback" isn't necessarily a stand-out track on the album, but the playful song lends itself well to a live performance that's fun and entertaining for Swift and the audience alike. If executed properly, the lyrics on the bridge, " even if it's handcuffed, I'm leavin' here with you " and " pick your poison, babe, I'm poison either way, " and the lead into the final chorus could all be huge moments during the live performance.

By amping up the production and accompanying the song with some fun choreography, "imgonnagetyouback" has the potential to deliver a performance in line with the 1989 era. In fact, the line on the chorus about smashing up the subject's bike is reminiscent of Swift smashing her boyfriend's fancy car in the "Blank Space" music video, which she referenced via Easter egg on the Eras Tour by wielding a neon golf club during her performance.

9 Taylor Swift Songs That Are Even Better In The Eras Tour Movie Than On The Album

3 so high school.

On the joyous and nostalgic "So High School," Swift gushes about how her adult relationship makes her feel like a lovestruck teenager in the best way. She references teen-centric media like American Pie and Grand Theft Auto and games like "Kiss, Marry, Kill," Spin the Bottle, and Truth or Dare. These details and the premise of the song as a whole provide endless possibilities for different high school-themed costumes, props, set pieces, and even choreography in a live performance of "So High School" on The Eras Tour.

It's also widely speculated that "So High School" is about Swift's relationship with her current boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, mostly because of the lyric, " you know how to ball, I know Aristotle ." She already shouts him out on The Eras Tour by changing the lyric on "Karma" from " guy on the screen " to " guy on the Chiefs, " but it would be a sweet gesture to include a song that's (supposedly) about Kelce on the set list, especially for the shows where he's in attendance.

Is Travis Kelce In Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie?

2 thank you aimee.

On "thanK you aIMee," Swift reflects on how she was ruthlessly tormented by the titular Aimee and realizes that the hell Aimee put her through pushed her to prove herself and succeed. The song is seemingly directed at a mean girl who bullied Swift in school but the deliberately capitalized letters in the title suggest that "thanK you aIMee" is actually a subtle jab at Kim Kardashian and their famous feud. Given this additional context, it might be controversial to include this song on The Eras Tour set list.

Hearing Swift call out bullies and sing about finding her strength would be such a significant experience for all the young children attending The Eras Tour who might be going through the same thing.

As a standalone song separate from any (unconfirmed) lore, "thanK you aIMee" is an empowering anthem about perseverance and overcoming bullying. Hearing Swift call out bullies and sing about finding her strength would be such a significant experience for all the young children attending The Eras Tour who might be going through the same thing.

The production on "thanK you aIMee" is quite understated on the album, but the instrumentals can be bulked up to create more of an atmosphere during the live performance. Given the deeply personal subject matter (whether it's about Kardashian or a real childhood bully, or both), performing "thanK you aIMee" onstage every night would probably be a cathartic experience for Swift , especially the lyric, "I built a legacy that you can't undo ."

1 The Bolter

A bit of a deep cut on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, "The Bolter" tells the tale of a woman who bolts (hence the title) at the first sign of trouble in a relationship. The third-person, unraveling narrative is reminiscent of the detached, fictionalized approach Swift took on Folklore , which has proved fruitful in delivering compelling performances on The Eras Tour.

The vast melodic diversity of "The Bolter" also creates sonic distinctions between the verses, chorus, post-chorus, and bridge, which would naturally translate to an engaging live performance.

Though it comes toward the end of the lengthy double album, "The Bolter" stands out due to Swift's vivid storytelling and the varying pitches she sings in throughout the song. The vast melodic diversity of "The Bolter" also creates sonic distinctions between the verses, chorus, post-chorus, and bridge, which would naturally translate to an engaging live performance. Performing "The Bolter" would also provide Taylor Swift with the opportunity to whip out her acoustic guitar during The Tortured Poets Department set on The Eras Tour.

The Seattle Sounders jumped out to their first road lead of the season, but were undone shortly thereafter when Stefan Frei was red-carded while giving up a penalty. Christian Benteke converted from the spot then added a towering header to give D.C. United the lead that they’d maintain for a 2-1 win on Saturday. Despite being down a man for well over half the game, the Sounders had plenty of chances to grab an equalizer only to be undone by some good saves, the post and some regrettable misses to continue their worst-ever start to a season at 1-5-3.

Bon Jovi on the Band’s New Doc, If They’ll Ever Tour Again & Driving Around New Jersey With Bruce Springsteen

Jon Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi: The Billboard Cover Story

Trending on billboard.

“When I can do two-and-a-half hours a night, four nights a week and not think about it — the way that I did for the first 30 years of our career — then I’ll say, ‘Sure, I’d love the opportunity,'” says the group’s frontman, still a dreamboat at 62.

The opportunity in question is touring. On the precipice of releasing its 16th studio album, Forever , Bon Jovi isn’t sure they’ll hit the road behind the album, out June 7. The wildcard element is JBJ’s voice, the same one that implored us to live for the fight when that’s all that we’ve got on “Livin’ on a Prayer,” and melted a billion hearts on “Bed of Roses” — and which has been under heavy repair since the vocal difficulties Bon Jovi has experienced for years necessitated a major vocal cord surgery in the summer of 2022. The procedure left him unsure if he’d ever be able to sing about going down in a blaze of glory, or living while he’s alive, or anything at all, ever again.

This issue isn’t what the band’s new documentary , Thank You, Goodnight was intended to be about. The stakes, however, became quickly apparent to director Gotham Chopra when he started filming a few years back.

“The more time I spent with Jon, I was like, ‘So wait, what’s going on with your voice?'” Chopra says over Zoom. “Jon said he’d been struggling with it for a couple of years, and didn’t know what was going to happen — because the shows we were filming might be the end of the line — but that that wasn’t for the documentary.”

This narrative thus became the through line of the four-part documentary, premiering tomorrow (April 26) on Hulu. Helmed by Chopra, whose previous work includes the 2021 Tom Brady docuseries Man in the Arena , the Bon Jovi project was one, Chopra says, “where nothing was off limits.” It unpacks the Bon Jovi story from its earliest days in Bon Jovi’s native Sayreville, New Jersey to the arena-rock juggernaut of the Slippery When Wet era to the band’s lineup changes — to Jon Bon Jovi scanning his neck with specialized lasers in an attempt to shore up his voice. Interview subjects include the band (Jon Bon Jovi, keyboardist David Brian, drummer Tico Torres and newer members Hugh McDonald, Phil X and Everett Bradley), along with former manager Doc McGhee, songwriter Desmond Child, good pal Bruce Springsteen and Richie Sambora, the guitar-wielding yin to Jon Bon Jovi’s yang, who left the group in 2013.

“Obviously early on, I was like, ‘Hey, I’ve got to get Richie Sambora. We can’t do this without Richie’,” Chopra recalls, “Jon was like, ‘Oh, yeah, you gotta get Richie Sambora. You can’t do this without him.'”

With Sambora’s departure serving as one of the documentary’s central tensions, Chopra — who interviewed each person involved in the film separately — eventually even captured an onscreen apology from the guitarist.

“In the film he says, ‘I don’t regret doing it. I regret the way I did do it; I apologize to the guys for that,'” recalls Chopra. “I think the guys and Jon were pretty affected by that… All of these things become an act of therapy in some ways.”

“What he was going through wasn’t easy,” says Chopra. “There were times on that tour when he was struggling, and he was in his dressing room, and he’d be like, ‘get the f–k out of my room’ and I’d get the f–k out of his room — then gradually find my way back in after five or 10 minutes.”

This level of intimacy, along with frank, often funny and frequently poignant interviews (in the last episode Bon Jovi gets choked up about his love of songwriting) and a barrage of archival footage, combines to offer a film that even hardcore Bon Jovi fans will likely learn something from. Here, Jon Bon Jovi and Torres discuss the documentary, as well as the future of the band.

Jon, the film’s director Gotham Chopra mentioned that there were times where he was filming and you didn’t necessarily want him in the room. How vulnerable was the documentary experience?

Jon: We had to trust him as the director in order to get what we wanted, which was the truth. One thing we all agreed upon, on day one, was we didn’t want a vanity piece. [We wanted] to tell the honest-to-God ups and downs of life behind the curtain. Nobody anticipated the health issues with me, and so that was the wild card in this. But I trusted him.

Tico: Gotham is a very spiritual person, and after a while you forget he’s there. But his questions are very spiritual in nature, and somehow he opens you up to be honest with yourself. You don’t find that in regular interviews.

Jon, so much of documentary focuses on this narrative about your voice. What was it like during this uncertain time, to also be bearing it to the camera?

The surgery was nearly two years ago, and obviously you’ve recorded an album since undergoing it. How are you feeling now?

Jon: There is still uncertainty about the outcome 22 months after the surgery, although I’m optimistic. And for the record, I can say — because now I’m speaking to press and need to clarify — I’m very capable of singing again. It’s just that the bar for us is two-and-a-half hours a night, four nights a week. I have to get to that level again before we’ll tour. So being vulnerable I was never afraid of. Sharing it now with the public, it’s out of my control, because that’s what we all signed up for. And like T said, Gotham has a kind of spiritual approach to things, so it was never combative. I trusted him.

Tico: It was difficult for the band. To see one of your brothers suffering and going through something, and he’s the hardest working guy there is. Every day he works hard to get back. Right after the operation, speaking to him, once he could speak, he sounded way lower [in register] than me. And we’re a band, so we worry about each other. I think the fact that the documentary was capturing that as well is important. Because we’re in it together. We’re gonna back him up no matter what.

Gotham took the approach of interviewing everyone separately. What was it like to finally see Richie’s footage?

What was it like getting an apology from him?

Jon: I don’t need an apology… I don’t need an apology. It’s not about that.

Tico: Remember, you’re a band. We grew up together. And like I said before, when somebody’s hurting, you care about him… Alec as well, our beloved bass player, when he left, it’s a void. And you know he passed away just a couple of years ago. It’s family. It does affect you. As a whole, it affects us. There’s a comeback from that. I think the writing process and the recording process as a band helps you get that out, because it’s emotion.

Jon, in the doc you say that in the Slippery When Wet era, the band had found another rung of the ladder to climb, and obviously there was much more to go after that. Given everything you’ve done, do you see more rungs for Bon Jovi? Where is there left to go?

Jon: It’s not about numbers at all. I would love the opportunity to be whole, so that when we would go out on that stage, we could do those 18 albums and pick any song I want throughout that catalog on a nightly basis, the way I used to be able to do. That’s where I have left to go. When we’ve done those kind of shows… when we opened the O2 Arena in London and we did 12 or 15 nights, and we did 90 different songs over the course of the nights — that’s the bar that I need to get back to.

What are your current daily practices for getting yourself back to that place?

There’s some great unheard music in the documentary — I’m specifically thinking of a song called “Cadillac Man” that you wrote for the 1990 Robin Williams movie of the same name. Is there a chance that any of this archival music gets released?

Jon: Yes. One thing that we have always known, and our deep fan base knows as well, is that we always write 30 songs to get 10. And so there’s always been a backlog of material that’s been unreleased. There’s no shortage of it. So I think that we stumbled on 30 or 40 songs that no one’s heard, and they’ll all come out, yeah.

So we get new music from the Slippery When Wet heyday era Bon Jovi?

Jon: Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Keep the Faith . All the records.

Is there a timeline for that?

Jon: No. No one’s actually even addressed it with me yet. The archiving was still going on simultaneously to the mastering and the album cover and the video and all that kind of stuff… But we know what we’ve got. It’ll happen during the course of the release of the album.

That’s incredibly exciting.

Jon: Yeah, there’s some really good songs that I can’t believe didn’t make those records.

Jon, there’s this great moment in the documentary when you share about going for long car rides with Bruce Springsteen, and you both leaving your phones at home and just driving around New Jersey and talking. What can you tell us about the last drive?

Yeah, not too many.

So yeah, we often do it, and it’s some of my most treasured memories. People have seen us along the way. The first five, six, seven times, nobody would have known. But then this time we went for an ice cream cone, or this time we went for a drink, or this time we were stopped at a light. So the sightings of Sasquatch have happened. [ Laughs. ]

I was also struck by the part of the doc where you were all talking about what your success could afford you in terms of spending one-upmanship. Like, “You bought me a car? I’m going to buy you two cars” or “We need 16 pinball machines on this tour.” Is there one extravagance from those days that sticks out to you?

Jon: There was silliness. There were absolutely cars and art and toys — because you could, and we took full advantage of it.

Through documentary you all got to review 40 years of your own personal style. Was there one look from each of yourselves that made you think, “Oh my God, I looked amazing”?

Jon: No, I take the opposite. My baby pictures were public, yours were not. We still have to suffer some of those looks. It could have been worse, but you know, some of those baby pictures were tough to look at.

Tico: I mean, if you take the clothes away, we definitely were better looking and younger. But the clothing was much to be desired. Even the haircuts were a little like, “I wish we didn’t do that.”

Some of that style has come back around though.

Jon: Oh, yes. You sit around now your kids and you go, “Those torn jeans? Let me tell you where all this stuff comes from that you’re doing.” When I see parachute pants and Capezios come back though, I’m running for the hills. [ Laughs. ]

Tico: I think we’re living the joy now. Jon’s been through a lot, and of course everybody goes through that pain with him. The joy is the revival. Doing a record together is cleansing. Jon’s lyrics — and I’m not a lyricist; I don’t listen to lyrics — but this is one of the few records where I listen to every one of them, because they just grabbed me. There was a lot of joy in making this record. I think we’re enjoying it. Jon, what do you think?

Jon: Well, we are. I’ll give you a great example: when we’re at these rehearsals and we’re just marking the progress that I’m making on a monthly basis. There’s no miracles, but when I look around the room and not once does the band sit there and go, “I don’t want to be here.” Or “I don’t want to play that song again.” That to me is love on a whole other level.

We know we’re not going out on the road tomorrow. We know we’re not being paid to sit in this rehearsal space. But the guys are like, “Of course I’ll be there. Let’s go. Let’s do it again.” Or if I crash and burn, they go, “Okay, I traveled all this way and we played an hour before I’ve gotta cool it.” Nobody has cursed me for it. They’re like, “We’re with you.” That’s the love of family and band and brotherhood that no presents, no cars, no art, no silly kids’ stuff could ever, ever replace.
