As an avid cyclist, bike tours are a must when we visit any city. Rome is filled with people on scooters, e-bikes, and buses...we wanted something different. I found Simone's company and sent an email to book a tour for my wife and I. Simone is the best. He's super knowledgable, friendly, and authentic. We started in downtown Rome and safely made our way to the edges of the city walls. We continued through the outskirts of town along the aqueducts eventually stopping for lunch...by this time it felt like we were hanging out with a friend more than paying for a tour. Lunch was at (what seemed like) a local spot before heading down the Appian way back towards town. All in all the tour took around 6 hours. We both highly recommend and would send friends Simone's way in the future.

My husband and I took The Appian Way Bike Tour, guided by the exceptional Simone. Simone was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable about Roman history and architecture. He took us through beautiful parks, we rode along the actual Appian Way and we saw the remnants of stunning aqueducts and Roman tombs. We learned more about the ancient Romans than we previously knew and were enthralled by Simone's stories that brought history to life for us. If you want to see more than just the Colosseum in Rome this trip is a must. Hidden gems and a taste of what Ancient Rome was really like. This tour exceeded my expectations. Thank you Simone for an absolutely amazing adventure!!!

After a standard morning tour of the Forum, Colosseum, Pantheon and Trevi our 10 and 12 year old children were ready to call it a day. After refueling with lunch, we saw the Forum and the Pantheon again plus biked up to the Capitoline Museum with beautiful views during the sunset, the Mouth of Truth, and the Spanish Steps at night. It was not boring through the jovial guide Simone. He's not only kid friendly but a kid at heart. The children were excited, energized, learned and retained more through his stories! We saw the same sights from angles you can reach only by bike or foot. Everything felt so up close and personal. I thought it would be scary - weaving through the streets of Rome. But Simone watched my beginner 10 year old biker like a hawk and made sure the rest of us followed suit. He turned onto quiet picturesque streets whenever he could. And to top it off - he's a great photographer! And gladly took family photos of us. I think we have our family holiday card photo!

Biking the Appian Way is a must when in Rome. I ended up booking this last minute and as life turns out, it is a HIGHLIGHT of my trip. My guide, the wonderful Simone, has a passion for his city, it's history, and people. He was thoughtful and patient as a guide and caters to your skillset. If you want to enjoy a more authentic experience outside of the usual touristy things in Rome, this is an amazing thing to do: it's adventurous, yet there's plenty of time to take photos, relax a little, and soak in the environment. If you book the afternoon, you get the setting sun and it is truly spectacular. We returned to Rome as night was falling, and cycled through the streets and past the Colosseum which was all lit up in its majestic glory. I highly, highly, highly recommend this activity--and Simone as you're guide, he is truly the best, I promise!

Our bike tour with Simone was the perfect start to our Roman trip last week! I had never been to Rome but my partner had and this tour was an amazing way for me to get a lay of the land while also providing new information and sights for my partner. You do not just go to the typical tourist spots but get a feel for the true life of the city, even in a brief amount of time. Simone's passion for the culture and history of Rome cannot be under-stated. Highly recommend!

Simone made this bike experience excellent! The tour was about 4 hours long and we enjoyed every second of it. We are so glad we decided to do the tour with Free Bike Tours Rome on our first day in the city. Simone really helped us learn the layout of Rome. He is incredibly knowledgeable about his city. Best part about this bike tour was that we weren't seeing the big touristy sites. This was exactly what we were looking for. Simone took us to places we probably never would have visited in Rome. He also was able to give us the history of Rome and all the back stories to every place we stopped. This was one of our highlights of our trip to Rome. Simone will adjust the tour to whatever you want to see or learn. I strongly suggest booking a tour with him. You will not be disappointed!!! We did a number of tours while in Rome (at the Vatican and the Colosseum), and Simone's bike tour was by far the best. We learned the most with him and had the most fun! He is worth every penny and more! Plus, you're supporting a small local entrepreneur!!

Incredible experience. It rained on us in the first quarter of the trip but we ended up all grabbing coffee and waiting out the rain. The sun peaked through and the rest of the excursion was breathtaking. Our guide Simone was amazing. Our group was huge and he kept us all together and kept us aware of each space we entered into.

Our family of four (two adults and a 14 and an 11 year old) did the morning bike tour on July 11, 2019 with Lorenzo the day after arriving to Italy and it was our favorite part of our whole 2 -week trip! We started off early to avoid the heat and the worst of the crowds. Lorenzo asked us our preferences regarding what we wanted to see, helped us select equipment, observed our riding abilities, and then we were off! The tour ended up being five hours as Lorenzo never rushed us and we got to see so many things. We capped the tour with gelato place that ended up being our favorite in Rome. I can't speak highly enough of Lorenzo. He was very knowledgeable about Roman history, which he shared in an interesting and not overwhelming way. He is intimately familiar with the city and was able to show us vistas and perspectives that we would not have seen otherwise doing the usual tours (which we did do in later days). For example, we were able to look down on the Roman Forum and Colosseum from up on a nearby hill. We were able to get an overview of part of the city which then informed our later sightseeing. Lorenzo is also a very skilled bicyclist. The whole time, we felt safe and comfortable, which allowed us to enjoy the sights around us. He helped guide my 11 year old daughter at the end when she was getting really tired. He was easy going and fun. In short, this tour was AMAZING and you should definitely make it a priority if you can.

Amazing bike ride with Simone to see the Appian Way and the Ancient Roman aquaduct.. there were three of us on this 6 hours private tour. My sister got an electric bike, but we thought we rise to the challenge using regular bike..what a great experience! Simone was ÂMAZING!! He loves the city and its rich history. He is so passionate about preserving the culture.. Simone is very knowledgeable and took us to places we would have never seen. He told us the history of the Appian Way and the aquaduct. We would definitely take another tour with him again when we come back to Rome.

Had a great ride with Lorenzo today. The weather wasn't the best, with a bit of drizzle but Lorenzo took us on a 4 hour ride with many interesting stops and provided comprehensive narrative throughout the ride. Highly recommend!

The Best Rome Bike Tours

free bike tours rome

This post covers the top-rated Bike Tour companies in Rome, Italy, including a review analysis, types of tours offered, and prices.

There are so many types of bike tours offered, you will surely find one that is perfect for you!

  • Sightseeing Bike Tours
  • Night Bike Tours
  • E-Bike Tours
  • Things to Do in Rome
  • Free Walking Tours

Rome is the kind of city that isn't really built for cars, but it's pretty good for other forms of transportation such as the humble bicycle.

As such, it shouldn't be surprising that there are a lot of companies offering a variety of bike tours in this eternal city.

These outings typically cover the most notable and historic attractions in the city.

Here are a few of the most notable landmarks you can expect to see on a Rome bike tour:

  • Vatican City
  • St. Peter's Basilica
  • Circus Maximus
  • Trevi Fountain
  • Roman Forum

The most common type of service is a simple sightseeing tour which typically lasts for approximately 3 hours and takes place during the morning or afternoon hours.

In addition to this option, many companies also offer a night bike tour , and these excursions usually cover the same ground that would otherwise be covered on a standard sightseeing tour.

If you're concerned about whether or not you'll have enough energy for a 3-hour (or longer) bike ride adventure, you might want to consider an e-bike tour instead.

E-bikes are designed to make riding a lot easier so that you don't have to push yourself to climb hills or steep inclines, making the trip much more enjoyable.

No matter what type of bike tour you want to take, there are a lot of ways to save money on this service. For more details, make sure to read our discounts section .

Is Rome good for biking?

Rome can be challenging for biking due to heavy traffic and narrow roads.

However, there are designated bike lanes and paths in some areas. The city's historic sites and parks can offer enjoyable cycling experiences.

If you’re looking to save some money on your best bike tours, there are a few different services you may want to consider before purchasing tickets, including both tourist passes and discount sites.

  • Tourist Attraction Discount Passes

Although most of the discount passes in Rome do not offer any deals on bike tours, the Rome Tourist Card could save you quite a bit of money off general admission prices.

This service includes a skip-the-line entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica, a ticket for the Colosseum, audio guides for both, an airport transfer, and a hop on hop off bus tour.

In addition to those activities and attractions, the pass also provides an extra 10% discount on tickets for several museums, cruises, and even Rome bike tours!

Considering that some bike tours can cost over €50, it’s easy to see how even at 10% off you could save a decent amount on these services.

Here are a few more activities that are discounted with this pass:

  • Hop on Hop off Cruise
  • Borghese Gallery
  • Baths of Caracalla
  • Castel Sant’Angelo
  • Venice Day Trip
  • Florence Day Trip
  • Rome Dinner Cruise
  • Underground Catacombs Tour

In addition to this pass, the Go City Rome Pass includes a free bike rental that you can use to take your own self-guided tour.

Depending on how you use these passes, you could easily save at least 20% - 50% off general admission for many popular attractions and activities.

For more details, please read our post covering Rome tourist attraction discount passes.

Discount Sites

If you’re not interested in paying for a tourist attraction pass just to save some money on a Rome bike tour, you may want to check sites such as Groupon to see if they are offering any deals.

In addition to providing discounts on a variety of bike tours, they also frequently offer additional coupon codes you can use to save an extra 10% - 20% off or more!

Before you purchase tickets using a discount site, make sure to check both the top and bottom of the page for any banners that may contain coupons you can use to save more money.

After the hordes of day trippers have filed back onto their coaches and trundled away from central Rome, set out on an e-bike tour in the settling dusk. The city beings to glow as ancient structures are gradually lit against the darkening sky. You’ll spy Rome’s favorites in a way that most visitors don’t. Choose a tour that includes dinner and you have absolute perfection.

There are many reasons why we recommend this tour with confidence. The strongest among them are amazing service, the variety of languages available for tours and a mouthwatering meal on the 4-hour tour.

8 – Appian Way Sunset E-Bike Tour w/ Catacombs & Aperitif

Rome, Appian Way Sunset E-Bike Tour w_ Catacombs & Aperitif

Rating: ⭐️ 4.7/5 ( 398 reviews )

“The landscapes (two amazing parks) were wonderful and the visit or the catacombs was really moving. And the aperitivo a nice way to end the day. I recommend!” Guillaume, Getyourguide

Rome would not exist without the Appian Way. This influential road that spans the southern half of Italy made travel, communication and trade possible between Rome and other outposts of the Empire within modern Italy.

Along this celebrated route are relics that remain from the Roman Empire while relishing some relief from the throngs in the city. An Appian Way sunset e-bike tour with catacombs and aperitif will introduce you to an area not often seen by travelers.

With affable and well-read guides, your outing will be filled with off-the-radar glimpses of antiquities, peaceful open spaces and history aplenty. You may just be booking the your favorite memory of your trip to Rome.

10 – Villa Borghese Bike Tour

Villa Borghese Bike Tour in Rome

Rating: ⭐️ 4.5/5 ( 20 reviews )

“Worth every penny! Our guide was knowledgeable, helpful, and very charming. A great way to see the Borghese property. A must!” Cynthia, Viator

Welcome to Villa Borghese, Rome’s largest public park! However, calling it simply a public park is simplifying the space to a point of unfairness. Villa Borghese’s grounds encompass a lake, woods, theaters, ruins, a zoo and ornate mansions.

The collected art works of Cardinal Scipione Borghese are on display at the dazzling Borghese Gallery . Also within the park is the Bioparco di Roma, a zoo sheltering several hundred animal species. A tour through Villa Borghese is an introduction to an enriching slice of Rome.

The vast knowledge of the guides paired with the multiple allures of Villa Borghese makes this an extremely popular tour. If you’re looking for a chance to use your legs to explore a special corner of Rome teeming with attractions, we confidently suggest taking this tour.

11 – Sunrise E-Bike Experience with Coffee Tasting

Rome, Sunrise E-Bike Experience with Coffee Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 70 reviews )

“This was probably one of the best tours I’ve done! The bikes were easy to ride, the stops were well planned out and the guides kept us safe and were so knowledgeable about the whole area.” Sarah, Getyourguide

Visitors to Rome don’t often witness the ancient city at dawn. All the more reason to rise early for an e-bike adventure fueled by some of Italy’s first-rate espresso. Well-educated guides will make spots like Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona come alive with stories, facts and surprises.

This tour earns our highest praise thanks to amazing guides and a chance to see Rome’s attractions before most of the visitors arrive.

12 – Small Group E-Bike Tour

Rome, 3.5-Hour Small Group E-Bike Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 72 reviews )

“Very nice guide with a lot of knowledge. would we do it again Highly Recommended.” Svenja, Getyourguide

Imagine cruising along Rome’s cobbled lanes with a private guide and only company you choose. Coast to a stop in front of the Trevi Fountain and St Peter’s Basilica as your guide retells the story of these eminent locales. Small-group private e-bike tours get you to premier spots in Rome easily and in a short period of time.

This is hands-down one of the most highly-rated bike tours in Rome. The combination of stellar guides, comfortable bikes and affordability for a private tour garners abundant five-star reviews.

Rome Highlights by E-Bicycle

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 308 reviews )

“Awesome experience with friendly and knowledgeable guide. Definitely one of the best tours that we have done in Europe, great value and a lot of fun.” James, Viator

If you want the luxuries of a private tour but don’t want to part with too many Euros, a Rome highlights by e-bicycle tour can be an ideal choice for you. In groups no larger than eight people, your guides will whisk you to Rome’s main draws like the Pantheon and the Roman Forum as well as hidden surprises.

This is a choice tour for people wanting to see corners of Rome not often seen by holidaymakers. Guides speak excellent English and make travelers’ safety their highest priority.
