George Strait Leans Heavy on the Legends During Night No. 1 in Nashville [Review]

You know you're in for something special when the reigning Entertainer of the Year is opening the concert you've just sat down for. George Strait in Nashville was special.

With remarkable — almost fascinating — professionalism and a working man's approach to music-making, Strait powered through the heat and 33 song titles in just over two hours. When he finished, his long-sleeved, plaid button-up was soaked in sweat, but he looked as if he could have gone another hour. If you worried that at age 71 he may melt in these conditions, you've forgotten he's from Texas.

A dense breeze did little to tame the temperature (about 88 degrees to start) as Strait quickly deviated from previous sets to open with "Write This Down." The night's first tribute came next: It was subtle, but as he closed "I Got a Car," he tapped his heart and pointed up to remember songwriter Keith Gattis, who died after a tractor accident in April. Strait's not really one to bring big emotions to the stage, as shown later in the show when Chris Stapleton joined for three songs. The men gave each other a hardy handshake instead of the kind of bro-hug popular between younger contemporaries.

The night was unique in that it was filled with covers and tributes. Early stops on this small stadium tour have repeated a very similar setlist, but during Strait's first night in Nashville, the legend included songs like "Blue Clear Sky," which Setlist.fm says he hasn't played since 2019. The fan-generated setlist archive is hardly definitive, but this No. 1 from 1996 is rare.

Just before that, he reached back for "That's My Kind of Woman," a deep cut from Just Comes Natural . Setlist.fm will tell you he's never played that song before. Who knows what's on tap for Night No. 2 on Saturday (July 29)?

Calling Strait a stand-and-sing act diminishes the simple power of melodic songs like "Give It Away," "Here for a Good Time," "Amarillo by Morning" and so many more. The music connects, so he doesn't have to work too hard to force it. That was particularly evident during a pair of Bob Wills covers late in the show. Fans weren't as familiar with "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and "Milk Cow Blues," two songs that acted more as a band feature — or bridge to a trio of closing songs — than highlights.

Other legends Strait hat-tipped included Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues" during the encore), Waylon Jennings (Waymore's Blues") and Merle Haggard . In fact, he played three different songs from the Hag's catalog: "Misery and Gin," "Pancho and Lefty" and "The Fightin' Side of Me." Add it up and more than 20 percent of his show was cover songs.

Little Big Town and Stapleton — the 2023 ACM Entertainer of the Year — played before Strait, but the crowd was there for the King, who displayed the kind of steady hand and confidence he describes in songs like "Fireman," "I Got a Car" and "The Weight of the Badge." It was a no frills show, because no frills were needed.

George strait, little big town, the starting line reacts to taylor swift's 'the black dog' lyric about the band's song being…, trending on billboard.

“What a great audience you are tonight,” the three-time CMA entertainer of the year said. “Been looking forward to this for months… It’s good to be back in Nashville,” he said, leading into “How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls.”

Strait brought the Texas heat with him in more ways than one, as temperatures lingered near the nineties well after sunset, and he held court before the packed crowd, rarely straying far from the center stage microphone and letting hit song after hit song waft over the crowd and into the warm Tennessee night.

Though he primarily sailed from one hit into another, he took a moment to set up “The Weight of the Badge,” dedicating the song to “all you men and women out there wearing the badge.” He added, “I want to thank you for being there when we need you… sometimes laying your own lives down for ours,” drawing the applause of the crowd. “I held one of those badges one time and I was surprised how light it was. I thought, ‘it’s light until you put it on, and then it becomes really heavy.”

With a set list this packed with hits, Strait did what he does best — offer an no-frills run of songs with no need for pyrotechnics, dazzling lights or frenetic dance moves. Strait, his signature cowboy hat, starched jeans and pearl snap shirt, trusty acoustic guitar and tight-knit Ace in the Hole band were all that was required to keep the capacity crowd on its feet, singing and swaying along until the last note. They sang faithfully to “Give It Away,” and swayed along with the fiddle-drenched western swing of the Bob Wills classic “Take Me Back to Tulsa,” and the mournful “Milk Cow Blues.”

Whether the audience members had followed Strait’s career since its early days, or if they hadn’t even been born when Strait had his first hits, it didn’t matter: they had absorbed the songs, the lyrics, the legend.

“I’ve been asked what my favorite song is that I’ve ever recorded,” Strait said at one point. “I have to say this one,” he said, launching into 1983’s “Amarillo By Morning.”

Stapleton joined Strait for a trio of songs including a cover of the 1983 Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson classic “Pancho and Lefty,” with Stapleton’s gravelly voice offering a perfect foil for Strait’s smooth, pure twang.

“It’s hot. I’d rather be hot than cold,” Strait, his own pearl snap soaked in sweat, told the crowd with a grin, before offering up a story about his longtime friend and fellow musician Stapleton. “Chris and I have been friends for a while. Back in the day, I recorded a couple of his songs. You might know one of them,” he said, referring to his 2011 hit “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,” “But you might not know this one,” he added, before he and Stapleton traded lines on “You Don’t Know What You’re Missing,” a song from Strait’s 2013 album Love Is Everything . They followed with Strait’s aforementioned 2011 hit.

Another special moment during the evening came as Strait welcomed U.S. military sergeant Derrell Kingsberry to the stage, to honor him by teaming with the Military Warriors Support Foundation Home for Wounded Heroes to make Kingsberry the recipient of a new home.

“Thank you so much for your service,” Strait said. This marks the 108th home Strait has been part of helping to give away a home to deserving military personnel. From there, Strait launched into Haggard’s “The Fightin’ Side of Me.”

Elsewhere in the evening, Strait’s easygoing camaraderie with the audience also brought a few lighthearted moments, as at one point he heard a fan yell out in adoration and he responded, “I love you, too.”

He ended his set with that 1981 debut, “Unwound,” before walking the edges of the stage, waving to the crowd with his signature smile, bowing several times and pointing to the audience.

“I wasn’t ready to go either,” he said. He gave a musical shoutout to his own tequila brand Codigo with a song of the same name, before offering up “All My Exes Live in Texas,” a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” and later wrapping his set with his 1985 hit “The Cowboy Rides Away,” giving another nod to his Ace in the Hole band and thanking the crowd.

“The Cowboy Rides Away”‘s opening line states, “I knew the stakes were high right from the start,” a notion that’s true in love and in the music business. But over the past four decades, Strait has not only beat the odds of a fickle industry, but became a standard-bearer, by keeping a laser focus on what matters most: the music, and artistry, and the fans.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fans of George Strait will have six major opportunities to see the King of Country live in 2023, alongside one of the country’s most respected and beloved musicians, Chris Stapleton , for one-off stadium dates in Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Milwaukee, Nashville and Tampa. Joining 89x Platinum music icon Strait and eight-time GRAMMY-winner Stapleton for all dates are special guests, Little Big Town .

Tickets to all shows go on sale next Friday, Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. local time at GeorgeStrait.com . American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday, Nov. 3 at 10 p.m. local time.

“When I walk through those curtains and see those smiling faces, my feet don’t touch the ground again ‘til I walk back out and get on that bus that got me there. That’s from a song I wrote called ‘I’ll Always Remember You.’ It’s a true statement,” Strait shared exclusively with Billboard of the announcement. “When we talked about doing these six shows next year with Chris, it was a no brainer for me. I was all in.”

“I love doing these shows with George about as much as I like doing anything. There’s nothing to compare it to,” adds Stapleton. “So many of his songs are in the ethos of what country music is. Playing these shows together is a great experience all the way around.”
