How to Complete the Gold Hoarders Voyages in Sea of Thieves

Everything you need to know about completing the Gold Hoarders' voyages.

Sam Chandler

Completing voyages in Sea of Thieves is what every pirate will need to do to make gold, and the Gold Hoarders offer the perfect opportunity to make you rich. This gold-mad company will sell you treasure maps, and if you bring them back a treasure chest or two, they'll pay plenty of gold for your troubles.

How to Complete Gold Hoarders Voyages

The Gold Hoarders are one of three companies you can find in Sea of Thieves that will pay you gold to complete voyages, the other two are Merchant Alliance and Order of Souls. If you want to make enough gold to customize your ship , you’re going to need to do a lot of quests, or “voyages” as they’re known in-game.

  • Speak with the Gold Hoarders vendor in his tent
  • Purchase one (or more) voyages
  • Propose and vote for a Gold Hoarders voyage on your ship
  • Check your inventory for the maps
  • Locate the islands on your ship’s map
  • Sail to the island
  • Dig up the treasure with your shovel
  • Take the treasure chest back to any Gold Hoarders tent on an outpost
  • Sell the treasure chest for gold

When you first load into Sea of Thieves, you’ll find yourself in a tavern on one of the many outposts scattered across the world. To find your nearest Gold Hoarders representative, head out of the tavern and look for a little green tent – they can usually be found around the other buildings.

Speak with the Gold Hoarder to see the three available voyages they have for sale. At the start of Sea of Thieves, you’ll have zero gold, so all the voyages will cost nothing, but as you increase your rank with the various companies, you will need to pay for each voyage. Pick up one or all of the voyages and then find your ship by the pier.

Once on the ship (either a sloop or galleon), go into the captain’s quarters (or just down the stairs on a sloop) and interact with the table. Sea of Thieves will let you select a voyage and propose it for the group to vote on. With the quest proposed, you will need to vote on the voyage to begin the next step.

golden voyage sot

After the voyage has been accepted, a map will appear in your inventory. To find the map, hold RB on Xbox One or the E key on PC to open up the radial menu where the maps are located. Either a riddle or a map of an island will be in the inventory, and it’s up to you to find them on the ship’s map and set sail.

When you reach the island, you will need to disembark and begin looking for the chest as represented by a red X on the map (or wherever the riddle tells you to dig). Use the maps in your inventory as a reference for where the chest is located on the island. When following riddles, the next section of the riddle will uncover once you’re standing on the island.

golden voyage sot

Finding the chest could be difficult and might require digging in a few spots on the island. Once you manage to find the chest and dig it up with your shovel, take it back to your ship. At this point, you can either return to any outpost to deliver it or continue looking for more chests if you have multiple maps or if the voyage has not be completed.

Take the treasure chest back to any outpost you want, it doesn’t have to be the one where you purchased the Gold Hoarders voyage. Bring the chest to the Gold Hoarders tent and while holding it, choose the sell option when facing the vendor. You will receive a portion of gold depending on the rarity of the chest. Now that the voyage is complete, you can propose another, perhaps even an Order of Souls voyage.

This is just the beginning of your adventure through Sea of Thieves. As you play, you’ll be able to  earn more gold and perhaps even take on the challenging skeleton fort raid . Take a look at Shacknews’  Sea of Thieves guide if you’re looking for more pirate-related tips.

Hello, Meet Lola

All Interactive Maps and Locations

golden voyage sot

In Sea of Thieves, your main quests that you can choose from take the form of Voyages.

Voyages are undertaken from each of the three Trading Companies , and are how you progress in the world, earn gold, and gain reputation with either the Gold Hoarders , Order of Souls , or the Merchant Alliance .

golden voyage sot

These Voyages are procedural, meaning the target, location, and details of the mission will change every time you pick up a new Voyage - but the general task will be familiar after awhile.

Starting a Voyage

golden voyage sot

Early on, you can purchase a Voyage from the three Trading Companies for free to begin your service to their cause. Later, as your reputation increases, you will be able to buy promotions to take on harder missions - which may also incur more fees for better rewards.

You can tell at a glance how difficult the Voyages are by the terminology used. A task that has you dealing with a "pitiful" skeleton, customer, or person's buried treasure will be easy.

If sailing alone, you'll only need to place the Voyage scroll on your table opposite the main map on your ship and vote on it.

If playing with others and sailing on the same ship, each member of the crew must place their proposed Voyage scroll on the table and then the crew must all vote for which quest to undertake. Any Voyage not voted on will return to your inventory.

Note that if you leave the game, or are otherwise kicked for inactivity - any Voyages undertaken but not fulfilled will be abandoned, and you'll have to start again.

Voyage Types

Depending on which of the Trading Companies you are working for, your Voyage will take on different aspects, and range in difficulty and complexity the higher your reputation.

  • The Gold Hoarders will task you to find buried treasures.
  • The Order of Souls seek the skulls of corrupted skeleton captains.
  • The Merchant Alliance needs goods delivered to other islands before a deadline.

See more information and tips on each type of Voyage and what to expect in the sections below:

Gold Hoarder Voyages

golden voyage sot

Gold Hoarders will usually always begin with a map - or several maps. These maps mark the location of buried treasure, but there will be some legwork on your part.

golden voyage sot

Maps start out by only showing you the shape of the island but not the name - and an X marks the spot. You'll have to match the shape of the island with the name on the Main Map in your ship to chart a course. Once on the island, you'll want to use the compass to orient yourself and head to the area with the X and use the topography to find the location.

Once you believe you are at the right spot, ready your shovel and start digging. If you were correct, you'll hear a 'thunk' and start pulling a chest up from the sands. With the chest in your hands, the voyage will technically be complete - you can sell it to any Gold Hoarder at any of the Outposts for a reward - but so can other players if they steal it!

Other times, instead of a map you'll recieve a riddle - often in several parts. In order to uncover more of the riddle, you'll need to unravel its clues. The first will give you the name of the island. Once on the island, take out the map to see the next clue appear.

The next set of clues will have you traversing the island in search of landmarks - they might be a certain set of trees, non-living skeletons, or other standout landmarks.

As you reach the last step, you'll usually be asked to walk in a certain direction - using your compass - and start digging!

As your treasure hunts become more complex, you may have harder times finding treasure. Maps may indicate landmarks you will need to find, or precise steps taken from a spot. Be sure to use your compass and hold it up to your face, and you'll get a better indication and vibration of every step you take.

Order of Souls Voyages

The Order of Souls will start with a wanted poster of sorts - requesting you sail to a specified island in search of a Skeleton Captain or Crew to defeat.

golden voyage sot

You usually won't get a map of the island, so you'll have to match the name against the main map to find your target. Once on the island, you'll need to find the location of the skeleton crew.

Quest-related skeletons will always appear wearing blue apparel, unlike random skeletons you can find on any island. These skeletons will alternate using cutlass or pistols or even swiping at you unarmed - but still dangerous.

Be sure to stock up on ammo for your firearms on the ship - or locate an ammo chest on the island if you need one. You can also block skeleton attacks with your cutlass - but you can still be knocked back. After defeating most of the crew, the Skeleton Captain will appear to charge you. These guys are often faster and more ferocious than the others, and may charge up a strike that will cut through your defenses.

If you have friends, try and distract it and change the focus of the captain to give allies a chance to heal using bananas. Once defeated, the eerie skull of the skeleton will remain. Once in hand, the voyage is technically completed - as any representative will take the skull for payment, but it can also be stolen as well!

As your skeleton hunts become more difficult, extra steps may be necessary to unleash the evil of the skeleton crew, and clues will be given with the wanted poster.

Merchant Alliance Voyages

golden voyage sot

The Merchant Alliance will start with a bill of goods that needs to be delivered to a specific Outpost before a specific time. Sometimes this includes animals that you will need to find on your own - but remember that you will need to collect as many animal crates as needed from the Merchant Alliance rep before you set sail.

You'll be on a time limit for these missions - but thankfully you should have a few days head start. You can check the time against the bill of goods by looking at your pocketwatch - the number in the middle denotes the day.

They also won't tell you where your cargo can be found sometimes - it's up to you to make use of that head start to explore different islands to find the cargo you need. Also note that Animals may not always appear on islands that you've seen them on before - use your telescope to get a look at the island's inhabitants before making the decision to drop anchor.

  • See our list of known Animal Locations

Once you arrive on islands that contain animals you need, you'll have to inspect each one to make sure you get the right types specified in the bill of sale.

Once captured, you'll have to store the animals on your ship - and take care to make sure they don't drown or get stolen by rival pirates!

golden voyage sot

You'll have to make it to the specified Outpost before the chosen date and hour if you want the full payment. You can also offload animals - stolen or otherwise - at other Outposts, but for much less of a reward.

Voyage Tips and Tricks

  • Chickens may be easy to run up and catch, but pigs and snakes take a little more finesse. Snakes will bite you with poison damage unless you play a soothing tune first.
  • Pigs can run very fast and be hard to catch - but they can be lured by yummy bananas.
  • Skeletons will eventually start showing up in more variants: Shadow Skeletons are tough, but hate the light - whether natural or by your lantern.
  • Gold Skeletons can be slowed down by a well-aimed toss from a water-filled bucket.
  • Plant Skeletons regenerate while in the sun, and are invulnerable to bullets - so you'll need to get in with the cutlass to chop them down.

Golden Wayfinder

Golden Wayfinder Icon.png

The Golden Wayfinder (or the Wayfinder Compass ) is a magical Compass received during a Gold Hoarders Wayfinder Voyage in Sea of Thieves . The Golden Wayfinder always points towards Torn Map Parchments hidden on Islands in The Sea of Thieves that make up a Torn Map , which points to the location of a Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault Key , which in turn can open a Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault filled with various Gold Hoarders Treasure .

  • 4 Patch history

The Golden Wayfinder is obtained by voting for a Gold Hoarders Wayfinder Voyage at the Ship ’s Voyage Table . Once a Wayfinder Voyage is active, every member of the Crew will receive access to the Compass in their Quest Radial Menu . The Compass is available until the duration of the Voyage . When the Voyage is cancelled or completed, the Compass will disappear.

All Player Pirates within a Crew receive a Golden Wayfinder Compass in their Quest Radial Menu when a Wayfinder Voyage is activated. As is a Voyage Item, The Golden Wayfinder does not replace the player’s Compass in the Equipment Radial Menu. The Wayfinder Compass always takes the first spot in the Quest Radial Menu.

Keyboard White Mouse Left.png

The Golden Wayfinder always points towards the general direction of a Torn Map Parchment . The further away the Player is from the location of a parchment, the broader the sway of the Compass needle. When a Player gets closer to the Parchment’s location, the needle’s sway will get narrower and narrower and start to move faster. Once the Player is above the location of the Parchment, the Compass needle will start to spin around in circles. Players will then have to dig above that spot with their Shovel to uncover a Map Parchment. Once a Parchment is dug up, picked up and used, one shard of a Torn Map will be revealed in their Quest Radial Menu and the Compass will start pointing towards the next Parchment piece. When all Parchments are found, the Voyage is considered complete and the Compass will disappear.

Sea of Thieves Legend of the Veil Voyage Guide

A guide on how to do the Legend of the Veil Voyage in Sea of Thieves.

' src=

Legend of the Veil Voyage is the newest voyage added in to the latest update of Sea of Thieves . This voyage will put players into different kinds of puzzles, explorations, and challenges in order to find the missing Veil Stones to complete the Veil of the Ancients, an artifact known to open a doorway to the Sea of the Damned. There will also be loads of treasure and reputation to be gained from this voyage which a lot of players will surely be interested to get.

In this guide, we will talk about how to complete the Legend of the Veil Voyage, more importantly, show how to do the different quests that you can encounter within the voyage.

How to Get the Legend of the Veil Voyage

The Legend of the Veil Voyage can be purchased from the Pirate Lord in the Athena’s Fortune Hideout. Athena’s Fortune is only accessible to players who have reached the title of Pirate Legend. The voyage costs 250 gold.

If you are not a Pirate Lord yet, you can still experience the Legend of the Veil voyage by joining someone who is a Pirate Lord as their crew as they go through the voyage.

How long does the Legend of the Voyage take?

The Legend of the Voyage can take between 30 to 45 minutes depending on how thorough you and your crew will be at getting all the treasures you come across, and how fast you will clear the final Haunted Sea Fort chapter.

How to Get the Legend of the Veil Voyage

How to Complete the Sea of Thieves Legend of the Veil Voyage

The main objective of the Legend of the Veil Voyage is to collect Veil Stones that are needed to complete the artifact known as the Veil of the Ancients. Three Veil Stones are needed to complete the artifact, each of which can be found by completing the three chapters of the voyage.

The Legend of the Veil Voyage is divided into three chapters where the first two chapters will be randomly selected from a list of smaller challenges. The third and final chapter will always be a naval combat challenge.

At the end of the voyage, players can collect plenty of loot and treasure that can be sold for hefty sums of gold, as well as tons of Emissary Value that will sure to boost you up to the top of the Leaderboards.

Not only that, but if the ship is raising the Athena’s Fortune Emissary, simply picking up the treasures related to Athena’s Fortune Voyage during the Legend of the Veil Voyage will increase the Emissary Grade to Grade 5. This will give a 150% bonus to any rewards, reputation, and emissary value that the crew will get moving forward.

Players can expect to reach Grade 5 right around the second chapter of this voyage, and since the voyage is repeatable, the next Legend of the Veil run will yield higher rewards thanks to this bonus.

Start the Legend of the Veil Voyage

Talk to the Pirate Lord in Athena’s Hideout and purchase the Legend of the Veil Voyage from him for 250 Gold.

Once you and your crew have voted on doing the voyage, the Pirate Lord will appear and give you the Quest Book which contains the chapters or challenges that you will need to accomplish. The first two chapters of the voyage will be chosen at random among one of the challenges below:

Zoom Maps Puzzle

Pictorial Maps Puzzle

Lying Maps Puzzle

  • Belle’s Haunted Island Challenge
  • Shipwreck Graveyards Challenge

How it works is on the first chapter of your voyage, you will either have to do one of Sudds’ Island Puzzles, Belle’s Haunted Island Challenge, or the Shipwreck Graveyards Challenge.

For example: your first chapter requires you to get the Veil Stone from the Shipwreck Graveyards. Your second chapter will either be an Island Puzzle given by Sudds, or the Haunted Island Challenge given by Belle. The third and final chapter will always be the Haunted Sea Fort Challenge.

Obtain the First Veil Stone

As mentioned above, the challenge for the first chapter will be chosen at random and will be different on every Legend of the Veil Run. The person or location that you will have to locate will be hinted at in your Quest Book.

Below are the mechanics of every puzzle or challenge that you will encounter for the first and second chapters.

This is one of the Island Puzzles that you will get from Sudds. This challenge follows the traditional treasure hunting activity where you are given a zoomed-in map with a spot marked with an X. This will test your knowledge and familiarity of the several different islands in the game in trying to match which island has that particular part shown on the map.

You can take clues from the layout of the land, the rock formations, as well as the foliage and greeneries, if there’s any. Also, the map will always be oriented with the North at the top part to make the navigation less complicated.

Once you reach the spot marked with the X, all you need to do is to dig the spot and you will eventually find a treasure chest containing some loot and a Veil Stone.

This is one of the Island Puzzles that you will get from Sudds. Unlike in the Zoom Maps challenge, you will be given with only two pages containing several sketches of locations. The page on the left shows landmarks serving as hints as to which island the treasure lies, while the page on the right shows a sketch of exactly which spot the treasure can be found.

Once you find the island based from the sketches from the left page, locate the exact spot marked on the sketch on the right page, dig down, and you’ll find a treasure chest containing the Veil Stone.

This is one of the Island Puzzles that you will get from Sudds. In this challenge, you are given a map of an island which is marked with several different symbols. Your objective is to visit the island and go to the spots marked by the symbols to personally see and inspect if the symbols showing on the map match the symbols drawn as rock paintings on the island.

If you find the rock painting that does not match the one showing on the map, simply dig in front of the rock painting to find the treasure chest that holds a Veil Stone.

Haunted Islands Challenge - How to Complete the Sea of Thieves Legend of the Veil Voyage

Haunted Islands Challenge

In this challenge, you will visit and island and talk to Belle who requests your help in locating a Veil Stone. In order to find it, she will give you a lantern that lets you see special braziers scattered across the island. With the lantern, you must also light up all the braziers in the island to reveal the Phantom that holds the Veil Stone.

As you light the first brazier, all the other braziers in the island will shoot up a beam of light up towards the sky for a few moments. You can then use these beams to locate where to find these braziers. Unlit braziers will also emit pulses on the ground which you can simply follow by locating where they are coming from.

In order to see the braziers, you must always have the lantern equipped and on hand. Also, if you find a beam of light, but you do not see a brazier, it is possible that the brazier is located underneath the ground within a cave.

Once you light up six braziers, a seventh brazier will show up in the middle of the island surrounded by Ancients. Light up this brazier and a bunch of phantoms will appear around it. With the Ancients’ help, defeat the phantoms and then the Soulflame Captain will appear. Defeat the Soulflame Captain and pick up the loot that it drops to receive the Veil Stone.

Shipwreck Graveyards - How to Complete the Sea of Thieves Legend of the Veil Voyage

Shipwreck Graveyards

In this challenge, you will have to sail to a shipwreck graveyard in a certain part of the sea. You’ll know that you are in the graveyard once you see a flock of seagulls flying over it.

Dive down towards the first shipwreck, the Grim Fortune, to find a locked door leading to the captain’s chambers with a treasure chest in it. You must then find the key that opens this door within the other shipwrecks in the area.

While searching within one of the shipwrecks, you will find a journal that has logs that will help you locate which shipwreck has the key in it.

Once you find the right shipwreck, search for the key by interacting with every possible interactable object in every level of the shipwreck, may it be opening drawer doors or even looking underneath tankards. After finally finding the key, go back to the locked door and open the treasure chests inside. One of them will contain the Veil Stone.

Obtain the Second Veil Stone

After you obtain the first Veil Stone, check your Quest Book and you will find the clue to your next challenge. If you’ve done either Sudds’, Belle’s, or the Shipwreck Graveyard Challenge for the first chapter, then you can expect that the second chapter will be one of the two remaining ones.

Obtain the Third Veil Stone from the Haunted Sea Fort

The final chapter will always be a sea battle involving a haunted fort in the middle of the sea. The haunted sea fort’s location can be seen as a huge swirling tornado which will make it visible to anyone looking at the horizon.

As you approach the tornado, three smaller forts or emplacements will appear around it. These smaller forts will continuously spawn aggressive ghost ships until they are destroyed. These small forts can be destroyed by firing cannons at them five times, after which you can search on their ruins for treasure or something that you can use against the main fort.

Once all of the three small forts have been destroyed, the tornado will dissipate, revealing the main fort. You must then fire three cannons on each of its towers to completely destroy the main fort. Once it’s done, you can go up the island where the fort was once standing and you will find a bunch of treasure chests, one of which contains the final Veil Stone.

Be careful about other players who might also join the fray as the massive tornado can be seen from far away and other players can easily join in as an ally or an enemy.

On the other hand, you can also raid someone else’s Haunted Sea Fort and take the final Veil Stone from there. Putting this Veil Stone on your Veil of the Ancients will still complete your Legend of the Veil voyage, regardless if one of the stones were stolen from other players.

Place all the Veil Stones on the Veil of the Ancients - How to Complete the Sea of Thieves Legend of the Veil Voyage

Place all the Veil Stones on the Veil of the Ancients

Placing all Veil Stones on the Veil of the Ancients will complete the voyage and the Pirate Lord will appear to congratulate you for completing it.

About the Veil Stones

Once you get a Veil Stone, you must immediately put it on the Veil of the Ancients to prevent the possibility of losing it in the case that you die. All stones that have been placed on the artifact will remain since the artifact will be tied to your ship throughout the voyage.

How much Gold can be gained from the Legend of the Veil Voyage?

The amount of gold that you can get from doing a Legend of the Voyage run can run upwards from 80,000 to 120,000 Gold depending on how much of the treasure you get and bring back with you. On top of that, you will also gain around 60,000 Emissary Value.

During the voyage, you can expect to see the regular kinds of treasures and treasures that are exclusive to the Legend of the Veil Voyage:

  • Offering of Legendary Goods
  • Jar of Athena’s Incense
  • Legendary Fortune Keeper
  • Athena’s Relic
  • Artifact of Legendary Hunger
  • Skull of Athena’s Blessing

The repeatable nature of this voyage and the amount of gold and emissary value that you get for a short amount of time makes the Legend of the Veil Voyage as a decent rewarding activity that players can spend their time on for farming.

Gold Hoarders Voyages

  • View history

Gold Hoarder Voyages are a collection of Gold Hoarder Quests in Sea of Thieves that Player Crews can purchase from the Hoarders. Every Gold Hoarders Trading Company Representative on Outposts sells Gold Hoarder Voyages. The cost, difficulty and rewards of the Voyages are dependent on the Player's Reputation acquired Promotions with the Company.

All purchased Voyages need to be voted on by the whole Crew at the Voyage Table . Active Voyages can be cancelled by voting to cancel the voyage at the table. Only one Voyage can be active at one time.

  • 1.1.1 Ashen Voyages
  • 1.2 Wayfinder Voyages
  • 2 Gold Hoarders Emissary Quests

Types of Gold Hoarder Voyages [ ]

There are two types of Gold Hoarder Voyages: Treasure Map Voyages and Wayfinder Voyages .

Treasure Map Voyages [ ]

Treasure Map Voyages are the basic Voyages of Gold Hoarders , giving Player Crews one or more X Marks the Spot Map and/or Riddle Map Quests that lead to Gold Hoarders Treasure items that can then be sold back to the Hoarders for Gold , Reputation and Emissary Value . The Treasure Maps lead players to Islands with X's, which uncover the burial spots of Treasure Chests . Riddle Maps lead players to a Large Island with a 2-4 line riddle. The Riddles take players to specific landmarks on the island and require them to perform an action with the Map, their Lantern or Instruments . The final riddle will denote the exact location of a Collector's Chest a certain number of steps away from a landmark. The Collector's Chest will have Gold and Artefacts inside. These Voyages are counted complete when all the Map Quests have been used up and all the Treasure dug up.

Ashen Voyages [ ]

Players can purchase Devil's Roar region specific Ashen Gold Hoarders Voyages at Morrow's Peak Outpost that lead players to Ashen versions of Gold Hoarders Treasure throughout the Islands in the Roar.

Wayfinder Voyages [ ]

Wayfinder Voyages are unlocked for Pirates who have acquired the level 25 Promotion with the Hoarders and lead players on the hunt for a Treasure Vault Key . These Voyages give players a Wayfinder Compass that leads them towards buried Torn Map Parchments . These Parchments are pieces of a Torn Treasure Map that hides the burial location of the Vault Key. The Parchments are guarded by Gold Hoarder Skeletons who have a chance to drop Artefacts upon defeat. The Treasure Vault Key can be taken back to the Hoarders and sold for Gold , Reputation and Emissary Value , or it can be used to locate a matching Gold Hoarders Treasure Vault . The Treasure Vault has numerous piles of Gold , Treasure Chests and Artefacts inside, but is open for a limited time. The Vault contains a Pillar Puzzle, which unlocks the door to a valuable Chest of Ancient Tributes .

Gold Hoarders Emissary Quests [ ]

A Gold Hoarders Emissary Quest can be claimed from any Gold Hoarders NPC after a Crew has reached the maximum Emissary Grade Rank as Gold Hoarders Emissaries . These Quests are similar to a Treasure Map Voyage, offering Crews 4 X Marks the Spot Maps with 5 Captain’s Chest buried on each Island. Only one Emissary Quest can be claimed per Crew per Emissary session.

For a century and a half, the Golden Spike has symbolized one of the most audacious and significant undertakings in American history – completion of the world's first transcontinental railroad. Schoolchildren learn about the famous spike, but few know about its companions at Promontory Summit or this tale's unexpected twist.

Completing construction of what was known as the "Pacific Railway" by driving home a golden spike appealed to the romantic spirit embraced by many 19th-century Americans. David Hewes, a well-known San Francisco contractor, was no exception. In spring 1869, he ordered a spike be created and delivered to former California Gov. Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific Railroad, who would join Union Pacific Vice President Thomas C. Durant at Promontory Summit.

Cast at the William T. Garrett Foundry of 17.6-carat gold alloyed with copper, the spike measures 5 9/16 inches in length and weighs 14.13 troy ounces.

Hewes had the spike polished and engraved by a local jeweler. The top reads, "THE LAST SPIKE." Two sides list Central Pacific directors and officers. A third side says, "The Pacific Railroad ground broken Jany 8th 1863 and completed May 8th 1869." (Inclement weather and a labor dispute delayed Union Pacific officials' arrival at the site, postponing the ceremony two days.) The fourth side states, "May God continue the unity of our country as this railroad unites the two great Oceans of the world." Attached to its tip was a rough gold nugget or "sprue" that was later broken off, and commemorative watch fobs and rings were reportedly made.

Following the ceremony, Stanford returned the spike to Hewes, who held it until 1892 when he donated it to the newly formed Leland Stanford Junior University in Palo Alto, California. Today, it is on display in Stanford's Cantor Center for Visual Arts.

News of the Golden Spike quickly spread, and others scrambled to get a piece of the action in time for the Promontory Summit ceremony. The spike was joined by five other donated items, each competing for a place in history:

  • A silver spike, presented by the newly formed state of Nevada. This spike, weighing 25 troy ounces, was rushed to the site and later inscribed, "To Leland Stanford President of the Central Pacific Railroad. To the iron of the East and the gold of the West Nevada adds her link of silver to span the continent and wed the oceans." It also is on display at Stanford's Cantor Center for Visual Arts.
  • A blended spike of iron, gold and silver, provided by the territory of Arizona. It was inscribed, "Ribbed with iron, clad in silver and crowned with gold, Arizona presents her offering to the enterprise that has banded a continent, dictated a pathway to commerce. Presented by Governor Safford." The spike was given to Union Pacific executive Sidney Dillon, and eventually was acquired by the Museum of the City of New York from Dillon's granddaughter. It's currently on loan to the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs.
  • A second, lower-quality golden spike, presented by Frederick Marriott, proprietor of a San Francisco newspaper. It was engraved, "With this spike, the San Francisco ‘News Letter' offers its homage to the great work which has joined the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans." It was never as prominent as the Hewes spike, and it faded into obscurity. It allegedly was handed to Grenville Dodge, Union Pacific's chief engineer. What Dodge did with it – if he actually received it – is unknown. Other accounts place the spike with Durant or Union Pacific board member John Duff. Yet another tale states it was returned to the News Letter and made its way back to San Francisco, where it was lost during the 1906 earthquake and fire.
  • A silver-plated maul, or hammer, wielded at the ceremony by Stanford and Durant. The maul joined the Hewes Golden Spike and the silver spike at Stanford University.
  • A 7.5-foot tie made of polished California laurel, donated by West Evens, tie contractor for Central Pacific, to receive the ceremonial spikes. Pre-drilled with four holes and placed in the ground under the last rail, it had a silver plate engraved, "The last tie laid on completion of the Pacific Railroad, May, 1869." It was taken back to Sacramento and kept in a railroad shop until 1890, when it was moved to Southern Pacific's San Francisco main office. It burned in the 1906 earthquake and fire.

As an artifact, the spike is historical, but stories about what became of it approached mythical status, largely because many of the estimated 500 to 3,000 people standing amid the sagebrush probably could not get a clear view of the ceremony or hear what was said on a windy day. Immediately following the ceremony, the spikes were replaced with standard-issue material.

In 1937, California writer and historian Robin Lampson researched the Golden Spike's history. Acting on a tip by someone who'd heard him on the radio, Lampson found the original invoice for the spike in a private Bay Area home, but another discovery he made the same day stirred up even more interest. Lampson found a private Hewes family genealogical book with a photo of a golden spike with a slightly different inscription than the one in the Stanford art museum. An erroneous caption under that photo convinced Lampson the historic artifact had been lost or stolen. In 1970, as the centennial year of the ceremony at Promontory Summit neared its end, Lampson doubled down on his claim, asserting that "a historical symbol second only to the Liberty Bell" had been lost to posterity.

Lampson's claim was revealed as an honest mistake in 2005 when two Hewes descendants revealed a second golden spike, hidden for generations as an heirloom. It was cast at the same time as the famous spike, but engraved later with the corrected ceremony date. The family sold the heirloom spike to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, where it is currently on display.

Of course, gold being a relatively soft, malleable metal, it was never practicable to "drive home" that spike. Neither the Hewes Golden Spike nor the silver-plated maul shows any evidence of high-speed impact. What has been driven home is the importance of the "Pacific Railway" in U.S. history, and the symbolism of the Golden Spike in American culture.
