Walleye fishing.

Eagle Lake, Ontario boasts immense numbers of perfect eating-size walleye and is recognized as a world-class destination for trophy walleye over 30 inches. Experience the Walleye Fishing Trip of a Lifetime

Walleye use their excellent vision in dim light to prey on minnows. With its dense forage base and complex structure, Eagle Lake provides all the habitat and food walleye need to grow fast and big, with several 14 pounders landed recently. This is the place to seek a trophy walleye!

Walleye are even more sensitive to changes in temperature than most fish, so catching them is a matter of knowing what depth they find comfortable at any point in the season. This is where the famous guides at Andy Myers Lodge are so important to the success of your walleye fishing trip to Canada. These experienced pros freely share tips about which weedbeds or mid-lake humps are holding schools of walleye and will mark your maps for you. This can easily mean the difference between frustration and hundred fish days. If you choose to be guided, they will find the fish, manage the boat, and cook a memorable shore lunch from your catch.

Walleye Fishing Season

Walleye spawn around the season opener on the third Saturday in May, so look for them in warming bays with emerging grass, shallow rocks, and downed timber. Be aware that the biggest fish may leave the spawning grounds immediately after mating, heading for deeper water with baitfish where they can replenish their bodies after the winter and the spawn.

With the warming temperatures of summer, walleye movements are fairly predictable. Some remain in the shade of weeds while others find comfortable temperatures and food along deeper main-lake reefs, humps, and points. The pros at Andy Myers Lodge will tell you which types of structures and which depths the fish are using. Although many types of baits will catch them, a simple live bait rig is usually your best bet, and the lodge has the finest bait suppliers in the region. Armed with a carefully marked map and a bucketful of big dace, you are well on the way to a dream day of walleye fishing. Check out our Muskie and Walleye Special Week with guide, tournament champion, and TV personality Rob Manthei on hand to share his secrets.

As fall approaches and the thermocline drops, some walleye move deeper toward the mud line and hard bottom areas. The first class depth finders on the camp boats at Andy Myers Lodge will help you stay over the right kind of structure. Walleye also follow migrating schools of baitfish into far-flung current areas and channels. This is a beautiful time of year to experience the remote wilderness areas of the lake. These lodges are located in Ontario and offer a range of accommodations, from wilderness cabins to fully-equipped main lodges. When planning your walleye fishing trip, consider what features you value most, such as proximity to fishing hotspots, trophy walleye catches, or a mix of other fish species like northern pike and smallmouth bass.

Tips and Techniques for Successful Walleye Fishing

To increase your chances of catching walleye, follow these tips:

  • Fish during prime times. Walleye are most active during low light conditions, such as early morning and late evening. Some anglers also find success by fishing at night.
  • Use the right gear. Walleye are known for their sensitive mouths, so using a medium-action rod with a sensitive tip can help detect bites. Popular walleye lures include crankbaits, jigheads with soft plastics, and live minnows.
  • Focus on drop-offs and structure. Walleye often prefer deeper water near drop-offs or underwater structures. Use a fish finder to locate these areas and fish around them.

Other Important Considerations When Planning a Walleye Fishing Trip

When planning your walleye fishing trip, take the following factors into account:

  • Seasonality: Some fishing lodges are open year-round, while others are only open during peak fishing seasons. Be sure to research the best time of year for walleye fishing in your chosen region.
  • Licenses and regulations: Fishing in Canada requires a valid fishing license. Be sure to check local regulations regarding catch limits and size requirements for walleye.
  • Budget: Fishing lodges vary in price, so consider your budget when selecting a lodge. Some wilderness lodges offer all-inclusive packages, while others charge separately for accommodations, meals, and guiding services.
  • Travel logistics: Plan your transportation to and from the lodge, as well as any additional travel arrangements you may need to make.

Follow these steps, and you’re likely to have a fantastic walleye fishing trip in Canada.

CATCHING WALLEYE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

We do the work, so you can catch fish.

If you love to catch walleye, you’re in the right place. Charter fishing for walleye on Lake of the Woods has many advantages. The biggest one is that you don’t need a boat or gear. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned angler, just show up, hop on a boat, and catch fish. Charters are also perfect for a group or family trip. And our boats are big and comfortable. We’ll even clean the fish and have it cooked for you back at the lodge if you like!

Our guides are Professional Coast Guard Licensed Captains with the experience and knowledge to put you on fish. We offer charter trips on our fleet of 27′ Sportcraft boats, allowing up to 6 people per boat. Our standard trip is 9 hours long from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All charter fishing adventures include rods and reels, tackle, bait and fish cleaning and packaging. Guests on our meal plan can enjoy a bag lunch with a large deli sandwich and snacks. We also offer shorelunch at certain times of the season.

If you don’t own a boat, or have never caught a walleye, this is the perfect adventure for you. Come up and fish with us this season!

WALLEYE CHARTER TRIPS

May – october.

Our Walleye charter trips are available from the May Walleye opener through the end of October. You can expect to travel anywhere from 1 mile to 30 miles on a charter. We’ll go where we need to go to put you on fish! Where you fish will also depend on the time of year and the wind direction/weather. Being located on the end of the Rainy River allows us to take guests fishing on the river even when the weather/wind makes the lake nearly unfishable. Our guides are always on the water, ensuring they can put you on a big school of Lake of the Woods Walleye.

GUIDED STURGEON TRIPS

When most all other fishing is closed, the Sturgeon are on the move in the Rainy River. If you have never caught a sturgeon, then put this on your list this year! Nothing compares to catching a giant sturgeon that bends the rod in half and puts up an incredible fight. The spring keep season is from April 24th through May 7th, but catch and release is allowed before and after the season.

There are over 100,000 sturgeon over 40 inches roaming our waters, according to Minnesota DNR. So your chances of tying into one of these giants is pretty good. Our guides have all the gear and know where the fish are.

* Guest will need to purchase a Minnesota fishing license prior to fishing, and a Sturgeon tag is just $5.

Canoeing, back-lakes fishing and wildlife photography opportunities abound. Remote and unspoiled, Kesagami is unquestionably Ontario’s premier fly-in fishing lodge.

Our remote fly-in fishing lodge” provides awesome pike and walleye fishing trips that will be remembered forever. Our remote fishery is highly protected with a selective harvest for walleye (for a sumptuous shore lunch) and a total catch and release policy for pike. Add to that a single barbless hook policy and that is why our fishing is so good! Give us a call or you can email us for a complete information package. You deserve to treat yourself to a truly unforgettable, fantastic Canadian fishing experience.

Kesagami Wilderness Lodge is owned by the Moose Cree First Nation as part of the Moose Cree Group of Companies. The fly in lodge is located Northeast of Cochrane Ontario in the Traditional Territory of the Moose Cree First Nation people. Going back in Kesagami Lake Lodge history, in 1960 a man named Sinclair Cheechoo founded the lodge in 1960 and named it Kewatin Kinashao Sportfishing Camp. Sinclair built the original log cabins and lodge upon starting the camp. After years of dedication to the lake, Sinclair sold the lodge property to Jerry and Verena Krahenbuhl in 1983. They built the lodge and motel building between the years 1983 to 1985 and these are the same buildings that stand on property ground today. Jerry and Verena also changed the name to Kesagami Lake Lodge. After 10 years, Jerry and Verena sold the lodge to Bob Mattson and Marsha Gibbs who were from Naples Florida. They owned a successful restaurant chain called Michelbob’s and implemented many service strategies from their restaurants that the lodge still uses today. Bob and Marsha also started the Kesagami Fishing Policy. This policy forbids the use of treble hooks, taking fish from the lake for harvest, live bait and lifting trophy fish out of the water in order to conserve the precious resources the lake has to offer. After many years, the lodge was officially sold to the Moose Cree Group of Companies in 2011. The group of companies also owns Cochrane Air Service, 3 Nations Logging, CS Enterprises, DCS Services , Moswa Fuel Services and Super 8 Motel in Moosonee.

Welcome to Walleye Heaven

What is the average size walleye in ontario, when do ontario walleyes spawn and where.

In the lake the Walleyes start to spawn as soon as the ice along the shore starts to melt. Generally they like to spawn on a sandy bottom like a beach but the prime spot is off sandy points where eggs do not get washed up on shore like they would on a beach. By the time Walleye season opens in Ontario the Walleyes have been finished spawning for a couple of weeks. The reason the season stays closed for so ling is because the males will hang around the spawning beds for a week and sometimes two weeks after spawning. Since Walleyes spawn in schools if someone was to find one of these schools; catching fish would be just too easy and create the temptation of keeping more of their limit.

What are the fishing regulations & catch limits in Ontario?

#1) Four fish with an Ontario sports fishing license and only one can be over 18.1 inches.

#2) Four fish with an Ontario sport fishing license and you can only keep Walleyes between 15.75 and 19.75 inches (40 to 50 mm). Anything smaller or larger needs to be let go.

I think right now the regulations are an experiment. I guide on Crotch Lake, which is about 80 miles north of Kingston. They have regulation #2 on that lake and in the last 5 years I have seen the Walleye fishing get better and better. Not only am I seeing more Walleye my guests and I am are catching bigger Walleye. A link to my guiding page is on the Sharbot Lake page from the menu above.

What kind of accommodations are available in the far north of Ontario?

Lodges: Most lodges in Ontario offer multiple levels of accommodations, which is usually a main lodge with lakeside cabins or cottages. American Plan means the lodge prepares your meals. Housekeeping Plan means the cabin has a kitchen and you make your own meals. In Ontario modified American Plan, also known as European Plan, means you get a housekeeping cabin with a kitchen but the lodge make you dinner. Google defines European Plan as being the same as housekeeping but that is not correct when describing Ontario's lodges.

Outpost Camps: If you really want to experience the northern wilderness and don't mind roughing it a bit an outpost camp is a great choice. Outpost camps are usually fly-in but many outfitters also have remote boat-to outpost camps. Outpost camps are almost always housekeeping.

Walleye Fishing in Ontario's Lakes

In my website I have written fishing tips based on fishing different lakes across Ontario. I would like you to read them and consider some different options and tactics that you have not tried before. One technique that is great for one lake may not work in another. The depth of the lake, water clarity, water temperature, oxygen levels, the type of weeds, the structure, other species of fish in the lake and the lake's distance north all affect how they feed and behave. Ontario is a big place with many different regions and habitats. First, it is best to ask the lodge owner what works. Also keep in mind that lodge owners are way too busy to go fishing most of the times so if you are not satisfied with the fishing try different things. You should also try the techniques you are used to because they may prove to be better than what other people are doing on that lake. I want you to come to Ontario and have the best Walleye fishing trip of your life. My email is below if you have questions.

Gary's Quick Walleye Lures & Baits List

• Jigs with salted or unscented twistertails (white usually works best) • An assortment of Rapalas, Thundersticks, Cotton Cordell Big O's or similar style of lures • Spinners and worm harnesses • Live worms and/or salt-cured minnows • Spinner jigs, Lindy Rigs, deep diving Husky Jerks and Erie Dearie style lures for the deeper Walleye

Double your Walleye Catch by Washing your Worms & Fishing Deeper:

Wash your Worms: I live out in the wilderness near Sharbot Lake in Northeastern Ontario. The company that used to distribute worms to all the stores in my area gave its territory to a company in Quebec. Now all the worms we are buying in local stores are packed in dry dirt and half dead. First I tried washing all the dirt off the worms and putting them in a container with damp moss. The worms came back to life and became plump and juicy but no fish would not touch them; not even Perch. I assumed the species of moss I have on my land has a smell the fish don't like. So I turned to what my dad used to do. You wash your worms in spring water, lake water or well water. You can't use city water because it's chlorinated. After washing the worms you put them in a container full of shredded damp newspaper. You need to get the paper wet and then squeeze the excess water out and then shred and crumple into loose balls. This way the worms can move around, stay damp but not drown.

Next you put the worms in the fridge for a few days before you go fishing. I guess it takes a few days to get any bad scent off the worms. After doing this I double or even triple the amount of Walleyes I catch. I did an experiment. Down the lane lives Vernon Scott. We went Walleye fishing on Crotch Lake. Vernon used worms from the store and I used my clean newspaper worms. I caught the first eight Walleyes. Vernon did not get a bite. Vernon got fed up and put one of my clean worms on and about three minutes later caught a nice 24-incher.

Fishing Deeper: I have full-page Walleye fishing tips for deep water with details about various rigs. On a quick note I would like to share something. I get a lot of business guiding in the heat of the summer because people have a hard time catching Walleyes this time of year. In July and August troll very slowly with a 3/8 oz. spinner-jig and a big fat worm. The spinner should be silver or brass and you need to troll 18 to 25 feet deep. Follow the contour of the shore staying in that depth range. Fishing deeper is your winning ticket. Please check out my deep water Walleye tactics from the menu above.

On big lakes many of the walleyes will be suspended out in open water feeding on schools of Lake Herring and Fall Fish (Giant Lake Chub). On the depth finding I find the Walleyes are usually down around 30 feet when actively feeding. You can troll with deep diving Husky Jerks and Cotton Cordell Big O's and Cotton Cordell Wally Divers. In the summer I find white and perch color are the best. You can also use a 3-way swivel rig with a 1 oz. weight and a spinner / worm harness and a big fat worm.

Ontario has thousands of the best lakes and Walleye fishing is more popular and in more demand than all other sportsfish put together. Because of their poplarity in the USA American fisherpersons bring 2 $billion into the northern economy every year and we dearly thank you for that. You could say mining, forestry and Walleye drive the northern economy.

Walleye Biology & Research Information:

The scientific name for Walleye is Sander Vitreus. Most people in Ontario used to call them Pickerel but back in the 60s somebody started calling them Walleye down south and that name slowly made it's way north into Canada and by the mid-90s most people in Ontario accepted the new name. A few of us old timers still slip once in a while and call them Pickerel.

Biomagnification & Eating Walleye:

Biomagnification is when toxins get absorbed out of the environment by microorganisms and as you move up the food chain the toxins become more concentrated with game fish being at the top and having the highest concentrations of toxins. You can drink glass after glass of water right out of Lake Ontario for 100 years and not consume as much toxins as eating one pound of game fish out of Lake Ontario. I bet you would not even think about drinking one glass of water out of Lake Ontario. Many people still have the attitude that what they can't see can't hurt them. The Ontario Guide to Eating Fish is only accurate when describing lakes and rivers that are not close to government owned casinos or resorts. For example: If you fish the Niagara River you can actually see chemicals boiling up from under rocks forming oily slicks on the surface of the water yet the government lists the Niagara River as one of the top 5 fishing destinations. They also fail to tell people that the Niagara River is an extremely dangerous river to fish.

Here is the Truth About Eating Walleye:

Walleyes that come from Lake St. Clair, Detroit River, Lake Erie, Niagara River, Lake Ontario, (including Hay Bay and the Bay of Quinte) and the St. Lawrence River have dangerous levels of Dioxin, PCBs, Lead and Mercury. Many of these chemical-filled Walleyes can be caught while migrating up the Ottawa River and into tributaries like the Petawawa River. If you don't want cancer don't eat any fish out of the above waters. Choose a smaller inland lake farther north where the Walleyes are perfect and clean.

Ontario has thousands of the best lakes and Walleye fishing is more popular and in more demand than all other sportsfish put together. Because of their poplarity in the USA American fisherpersons bring 2 $billion into the northern economy every year and we dearly thank you for that.

Northern Pike

The best Canadian Northern Pike fishing—these are the big beasts

Northern pike common catch and release: 20-30+ pounds..

Imagine catching a 33-year-old Pike. Because Northern Manitoba is in the upper latitude of North America, fish grow slowly here. For example, a 49-½ inch, 32-lb. Northern Pike is estimated to be 33 years old. One thing they don’t lose with age is their attitude: always aggressive, always fighting.

Northern Pike aren’t tough to find in Canada; what’s unusual (and exceptional) about Big Sand Lake Lodge is our monstrous fish . Our sustainability efforts over the past two decades have allowed these fish to grow … and grow … into the biggest Pike in Canada.

Each year, numerous guests catch Northern that qualify for a Manitoba Master Angler award, the most reputable and oldest master angler program in North America. Get your achievement recognized, receive a Master Angler Catch-and-Released badge, and have your name entered into the official master angler registry.
