Essential Vietnam: Hanoi, Halong Bay and Beyond 5-Day Tour

Essential Vietnam: Hanoi, Halong Bay and Beyond 5-Day

The tour has run smoothly from the beginning till the end. Danny, our tour coordinator was very helpful and friendly. He went the extra mile to make sure we were all satisfied with our holiday such as one late night when we came back to the hotel late at night, we didn’t have anything to eat while we were out, we were hungry, he offered to get some vietnamese baguettes and brought them back to us. The hotel we stayed for 3 nights was decent, room was big, breakfast was ok, staff was helpful. The Halong Bay cruise was a 5 star cruise, also upgraded by Danny. The cruise was spotless and elegant, especially the room. There were only 10 rooms on a boat, but we were lucky to join only another 12 extra guests on the boat, feeling like a VIP. It reminds us the oriental express train in the movie. Members of staff there were also wonderful and very friendly. Definitely recommend this tour.

The staff is so friendly. The tour is well organized so you know when and where you need to be. The cruise ship is beautiful. It was a relaxing cruise with beautiful views of Halong Bay and the food was amazing. I highly recommend 3 day /2 night cruise over a 2 day/1 night cruise.

3-Day Hanoi - Ninh Binh - Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay 5 Star Cruise

Overall really nice experience, everything was very well organized. Transportation was on time and comfortable. Good communication from tour operator. We had two activities on the cruise, one Kajak excursion (45min) and one tour with the tender boat (45min). Food on the cruise was mix of local and western cuisine. For the rowing boat experience in Ninh Binh we recommend staying close together, we got separated and had the tour on two different boats which was a bit unfortunate.

The service and amenities on this cruise were truly top notch. The staff and crew really went above and beyond what I expected. My only note is that there was basically no wifi on the boat at all. None of the networks let me so much as get a message out, let alone a picture or a video chat. Guests should be warned ahead, since those that had SIM cards or Wi-Fi pucks were able to access some services theoughout the cruise.

Very highly recommended! The best way to see Vietnam. The scenery, the smells, the chaotic traffic, the smiling children in the villages waving madly as you ride past, the amazing food you eat along the way, the people that you meet, all makes the journey one you will not forget.

Well organized tour! Stayed at TK123 hotel where the staff were really friendly, the rooms themselves were clean and the hotel itself was s well located for those on a budget. The itinerary moves a bit fast paced but that can be expected considering the time frame I purchased and how much is included / the relative distances to everything. I had requested the vegetarian/vegan meal and found that at all times my dietary requirements were met. A big thanks to Danny who organized the tour, and gave helpful tips upon my arrival! He was always available to make sure things were running smoothly before each day started.

1.  private hanoi city tour – full day.

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time: 8:00 am
  • Includes: Private transportation, free pick up and drop off at your hotel in Hanoi, expert English-speaking local guide, 0.5l bottle water per person/day, set menu lunch, fees and taxes

The Private Hanoi City Tour – Full Day consistently ranks as one of the top tours in the entire country. If you’re looking to jump right into the deep end of the proverbial Hanoi pool, then you’ll love this tour. By night time, you’ll have seen and learned so much, it’ll be hard to wrap your head around!

The tour starts off with you being picked up at 8:00 am at your hotel or other accommodations. The guides are very friendly, and as they are local to the area, know all about what you’re about to see. However, should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them.

Your first stop of the day is the Temple of Literature & National University, which is the oldest university in the city. Even before going inside you’re sure to be impressed by the elaborate architecture and details built in homage to Confucius and Confucianism. Step inside and learn all about this magnificent structure’s history.

Next up is the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, which is a somber yet intriguing place. You’ll learn all about how Vietnam had to fight for their independence under French colonial rule.

Expand To See More See Less

Ho Chi Minh passed in 1969, where his body is preserved and currently on display in a glass case inside the structure.

Located right on the side of West Lake, Tran Quoc Pagoda is an ancient structure dating back over 1,500 years! It’s serious yet absolutely gorgeous, with the tranquil lake offering an environment to help you clear your mind or organize your thoughts. Now, it’s time to enjoy the view, kick back, and enjoy a delicious lunch provided by the tour.

After, head to the Old Quarter where you’ll take a cyclo ride through its narrow, labyrinthine streets before seeing Ngoc Son Temple. Hanging out on a small island in the Hoan Kiem Lake, you’ll learn all about the legend of an emperor, sword, and enormous turtle. Then, watch a traditional water puppet show!

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. private hanoi city tour.

  • Duration: 6 to 8 hours
  • Departure Time: 8:30 am
  • Includes: Vehicle with A/C., lunch as Vietnamese set menu, entrance fee as mentioned in itinerary, English speaking tour guide,  bottle of water

Perhaps you’re looking for an experience more directed towards you and your specific group of people. If you want a more customized tour, check out the Private Hanoi City Tour . Put on by an experienced, English-speaking guide, it’s one of the best ways to explore the city and learn about the history of Vietnam.

Your day starts off by being picked up in the morning by your guide. The vehicle does come with A/C so you don’t have to worry about that muggy heat getting to you. Your first stop of the day is the oldest pagoda in Hanoi at Chua Tran Quoc.

Constructed in the 6 th -century by King Ly Nam De, Tran Quoc Pagoda is surrounded by lush vegetation and the lake, creating a picturesque scene.

Next, you’ll see the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, which is Ho Chi Minh’s final resting place inside the French-style palace. If you’d like, you can also see the One Pillar pagoda nearby, which was erected by King Ly Thai Tong all the way back in 1049!

Grow that brain by visiting the Temple of Literature and National University and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. Between the two, you’ll have quite the understanding of the country’s history, modern-day culture, and the ethnic people in Vietnam.

Follow all that learning up with a visit to Dong Xuan Market designed by the French colonists during the war. This is the largest indoor market in the city, offering everything from fresh produce and clothing to souvenirs and accessories between the 2,000-plus stalls!

3. Half-Day Hanoi City Tour by Scooter

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off available / Hoàn Kiếm, Hanoi
  • Departure Time: Variety available
  • Includes:  Motorbike with helmet, professional guide, guided group tour of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, morning tea

Perhaps you’d like to explore and learn more about Hanoi, but you have a relatively full day ahead. That’s no problem, as you can sign up for the Half-Day Hanoi City Tour by Scooter ! Using this convenient mode of transportation, you’ll be able to maximize your sightseeing and gain a unique perspective on this fun city.

You’ll start off by being picked up at your hotel or other accommodations, and be given a safety briefing by your professional guide.

They’ll tell you all about what to expect, how to stay safe, what it’s like scootering around, and more. At this point, they’ll also show you how to operate the scooter and provide you with a motorbike and helmet.

Your first stop of the day is the Hanoi Opera House, which was constructed from 1901 to 1911. Yes, it took a whopping 10 years to construct! It’s actually a smaller version of the Opera House in Paris, so it’s interesting to see if you’ve already visited the French capital.

Next, see the impressive Temple of Literature & National University, which is always one of the top tourist destinations.

Originally constructed as a university all the way back in 1070, it’s dedicated to honor Confucius and his teachings. Not to mention, it’s one of the most well-preserved temples in the country and is a wonderful example of traditional architecture from this era.

Visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum next, which played a very important piece in the immigration of many Vietnamese. You’ll have plenty of time to learn about the history here, stroll around the botanical gardens, and learn from the monuments and memorials built on location.

Evidently French, St. Joseph’s Cathedral is quite the surprise if you don’t know about the Vietnamese history. Constructed in 1882 after the French conquered Hanoi, it is a beautiful yet somber reminder of the past.

4. Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Includes: Private tour, professional guide, transport by private vehicle, air-conditioned vehicle

Next, we bring you yet another private tour which is ideal if you really want to immerse yourself quickly in Vietnamese culture. The Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour is fantastic for those who have a packed schedule and don’t have the entire day free to take off and explore.

Lasting just 3.5 hours, it’s easy to fit into your day and you have various start times to choose from. Not to mention, they do offer hotel pickup so you don’t have to plan ahead and plan transportation. Just meet them down in your hotel lobby, hop on and you’re ready to get started!

The guides are incredibly friendly, down-to-earth, and are happy to answer any questions you may have or provide recommendations. First stop of the day is at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where you’ll learn about the immigration history of the country and even see the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh.

The One Pillar Pagoda is nearby, and it’s not only beautiful but has a very interesting history as a Buddhist temple.

Then, head over to the Quan Thanh Temple, which is one of the four Sacred Temples of the capital. Dating back to the 11 th century, it is dedicated to Tran Vu, a principal Taoist deity.

Then, get your learning cap on and arrive to the Temple of Literature & National University also constructed around this time! Made of carved blue stone turtles and intricate motifs, it honors talent and encourages study.

Then, feel the energy as you head into the Old Quarter which is great for people watching!

5. Hanoi City Motorbike Tour By Locals

  • Includes:  Lunch, 500ml bottle of water, coffee and/or tea, rain poncho, face mask, helmet, English speaking guide, private transportation

We wouldn’t be able to do a guide on the best Hanoi city tours without including this next excursion! If you’re on a tight budget or simply want to see as much of Hanoi in a short period as possible, you have to give it a go.

The Hanoi City Motorbike Tour by Locals is a pretty straightforward name for this tour as locals will be taking your around to see their magnificent home.

Lasting 4 hours long, you’re going to be traveling by motorbike in order to make the most of your time. Motorbikes are fun, fast, and move quickly in places you may otherwise get stuck in traffic. Your tour guides are locals who know how to navigate expertly while keeping you safe and having a good time.

The first stop of the day after you’re picked up from your hotel will be the St. Joseph’s Cathedral constructed by the French in the late 19 th -century. The architecture is absolutely gorgeous, and is an interesting memento left behind after the war.

Next up, see the oldest and most well-known market in the city called Dong Xuan Market. This place is an absolute gold mine and you can very likely find just about anything you’re looking for here.

All kinds of trinkets, useful tools, food, clothing, and everything in-between is sold here. See the oldest steel bridge build by the French across the Red River which was bombed and damaged many times during the Vietnam War.

Located right next to Long Bien Bridge is the serene Red River Tea Room, where many farmers call home and show you how they live their lives.

Stop at the Chua Tran Quoc, which is a Buddhist temple clocking in at almost 1.5 thousand years old! Head over and see the B52 wreckage that was shot down and landed in West Lake during the war.

Your guides won’t forget to take you to the other top tourist spots like the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and will take you for a delicious lunch and coffee afterwards to fuel up.

Hanoi Travel Guide

Getting there.

While there are flights that head straight to Hanoi, many visitors opt for an indirect flight routed through Bankok, Singapore, or Hong Kong. This is because the flights are typically much cheaper this way. If you would like to add on a day or two at one of these locations, it’s a great way to see another city/country while saving some money.

There are many airlines that service both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and offer an open-jaw ticket, so you can fly into one and leave from the other. This is perfect if you’re going to stay in other parts of Vietnam aside from Hanoi and Halong Bay.

Prices do vary quite a bit, with July and August, Christmas, and New Year’s typically being the highest.

Getting Around

Hanoi is relatively easy to get around, but the method in which you use depends on your priorities.

Taxis – These are probably the most convenient for most travelers, however, it’s going to cost you. Not only that, but it’s not uncommon for taxi drivers to rip you off if they think you’re a tourist. Of course, Hanoi is a more affordable city but if you’re looking to save then you may want to opt for another method of transport.

Bikes – Bikes are very affordable (around a dollar per day) and easy to rent, but it’s not exactly recommended. Why? Because Hanoi’s drivers don’t exactly follow any kind of law. You’re better off using a motor vehicle yourself.

Motorcycle Taxi Cabs – These are quick and affordable, especially if you aren’t traveling very far. Unlike regular cabs, they don’t come with meters, so make sure to settle on a firm price before hopping on. Oh, and make sure to wear a helmet! If you’re unsure of how much to pay for your journey, it’s best to ask your hotel concierge their opinion and write it down or put it in your phone’s notes.

Cyclo – These fit 1-2 passengers, and are perfect for navigating through the Old Quarter’s narrow streets. It’s more about the experience rather than the transport itself, though.

Bus – Coming in red, white, and yellow, these cover all the famous attractions around the city, along with the Hanoi Train Station. The ticket prices do vary depending on where you’re going, but are more affordable than moto cabs usually.

Walking – This is probably the best way to see the city, if you don’t mind putting in some footwork. There are so many hidden gems around Hanoi – especially in the Old Quarter. This is also the area most pedestrian-friendly, fusing the old and new generations.

Where to Stay

The Old Quarter/Hoan Kiem – If this is your first time in Hanoi, this is where you’re staying. It’s located right in the heart of it all, with accommodations meant to suit any type of budget. Not only that, but some of the biggest attractions and best restaurants are found here.

For a luxury option, check out the Hanoi La Siesta Central Hotel & Spa . For a nice mid-range option, the Hanoi Marvellous Hotel and Spa is a nice choice.

If you’re on a budget, the Hanoi Esplendor Hotel & Spa is a fantastic option.

West Lake/Tay Ho – If nightlife or top-notch gastronomy are a vital part of your travels, we recommend staying in Tay Ho. Luxe hotels, fine dining, and upscale everything is found here. However, don’t be fooled – there are plenty of affordable places to eat and lay your head, too.

We recommend the InterContinental Hanoi West Lake for beautiful views and upscale service. For the best bang for your buck, the Elegant Suites Westlake is fantastic.

Ba Dinh – Are you bringing along the whole family? If so, you’ll appreciate the laidback vibes of Ba Dinh. It’s very walkable, with beautiful botanical gardens, the Truc Bach lake, and gorgeous architecture. While there aren’t quite as many food or nightlife options, it’s easy to access from here.

Our top choice is the Le Jardin Hanoi which is dripping in luxury, has fast internet, delicious breakfasts, car hire, and much more. Located in the peaceful French Quarter, the Anise Hotel is very affordable yet still offers wonderful views and service.

Hai Ba Trung – Are you the type of person who loves an authentic experience, and throws yourself right in the middle of the action? Then check this place out! Located right next to the Old Quarter, you have everything available to you.

We like La Casa Hotel Hanoi for great views, an enclosed plunge pool on the roof, and comfortable rooms.  Save some money with the beautiful Emerald Hotel Hanoi .

Restaurants and Eating Out

  • Bánh Mì 25 – If you look up the best banh mi in the city, this is probably going to be at the top of your results. Despite this, it’s still filled with mostly locals, due to its deliciously-authentic flavors and competitive prices.
  • Bami Bread – These are “Hoi-An-Style” banh mi, which are thinner, crispier, and overall lighter. It’s not as heavy and are perfect for snacking on while venturing around.
  • Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan – This legendary pho location has been serving up this savory soup since the 60s, with tender meat, delicate flavors, and consistency that makes it a local favorite. No matter what time you go, you’re probably going to encounter a line, but it’s worth the wait.
  • Bun Cha Dac Kim – This is one of the best restaurants for bun cha: a traditional regional dish of grilled fatty pork in a soupy bowl and pickled vegetables with rice. Their crab spring rolls are the perfect side!
  • Bánh Cuon Bà Xuân – Located close to Truc Bach Lake, mostly locals come here and it gets packed. These rice rolls are soft and chewy, and are an excellent snack.
  • La Terrasse Du Metropole – Located in the plush Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, expect delicacies like oysters, French cheeses and cold cuts, streak-frites, coq-au-vin, or even just a coffee. It’s fancy and delicious.
  • Sen 60 Ly Thai – Yet another sophisticated spot, this is a buffet housed in a beautiful neocolonial building. Inside, you’ll find supreme seafood selections like sashimi, crab, escargot, and more.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Hanoi has a vibrant nightlife with varied selections sure to satisfy just about anyone. While it may be known as “conservative’, it’s absolutely not! You just have to know where to go and who to go with.

Dragonfly – This club may not look all that lively on the outside, but once you step inside you’ll realize that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover! With gorgeous lighting and a lively dancefloor, it’s a fun place to smoke shisha, sip a cocktail, or just hang out with friends!

Craft Beer Pub – The name is straightforward enough, as it’s literally a pub that offers craft beer. You’ll find a nice offering of both locally-brewed and imported beer from Europe. If you want to find a place to grab a refreshing beer and watch the big game, this is it.

1900 Le Theatre – This club is housed in a very interesting spot standing on the remains of a burnt-down theater. If you’re looking to dance the night away with mainstream music complete with a DJ, this is it. It gets pretty crowded, so we do recommend coming with at least one other person.

Hair of the Dog – Perhaps you want something less noisy and more casual. The Hair of the Dog is very relaxed and ideal for nice conversation and meeting others. The first floor is for locals while the second is for foreigners.

Standing Bar – Yet another ultra-creative name, here you’ll drink your beer while standing up. Enjoy gorgeous lake views while sipping on one of their 16 types of craft beer, or enjoy some comedy shows on Saturday nights!

88 Lounge – Are you looking for a prime location for date night? 88 Lounge is sophisticated, with garden and sofa lounge environments to sit and chat in all night long.

Savage – This is one of our favorite places, with a great sound system, underground electronic music, and friendly locals.

Oh boy, can Hanoi’s weather get intense. The wet season is muggy, hot, and overcast so air conditioning in vehicles and hotels is a must. However, the dry season is pretty comfortable and clear – albeit a bit humid. Temperatures range from around 50 to 90 degrees throughout the year. You’ll probably want to bring a jacket just in case, no matter what season you visit.

Attractions

Old Town Quarter – We’ve talked quite a bit about this area of the city, but only because it has so much to offer! A maze of alleyways located in the heart of the city, its history spans over 1,000 years. Mixed with medieval architecture and more traditional Vietnamese design, it’s a great way to get to know the local culture.

Here, you can find St. Joseph’s Cathedral constructed in 1886 and is a memento left behind from the French colonial era.

Hoan Kiem Lake – A beautiful, tranquil spot located right on the edge of the Old Town Quarter, it’s a place to stroll around and clear the mind. Head down the red bridge and you’ll see Ngoc Son Temple, which was made in honor of 3 important figures: La To, Van Xuong, and Train Hung Dao.

Temple of Literature – This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, unique places. Originally constructed as a university in the 11 th -century, Confucianism and literature was taught here at one time.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – This was once a location of pilgrimage for many Vietnamese. Consisting of many museums and monuments, the mausoleum is a gorgeous marble structure where Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body sits in a glass display. Whether that’s something interesting or weird is up for debate, but it’s certainly a place where you’ll learn a lot about the country’s history and people.

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology – This museum holds a fantastically large national collection dating back thousands of years in some cases. These meticulously-curated collections consist of countless artifacts and art pieces including intricate carvings, traditional clothing, and more.

Hoa Lo Prison – Yet another construction from the 19 th -century French colonialists, this building was used to keep Vietnamese revolutionaries and essentially anyone else who thought to go against their ruling. Not only that, but many American POWs were kept here during the Vietnam War, including John McCain.

Imperial Citadel – Once the seat of military power in Vietnam, it currently holds the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only is the architecture impressive, but there’s a bunker dating from the Vietnam War where interesting artifacts are displayed.

Thailand – While you are over in Vietnam you should take a trip an explore Thailand as well. There are some spectacular places to visit. Be sure to take a tour of the Phi Phi Islands and the famous James Bond Island from the movie, “The Man With The Golden Gun”.

  • Don’t show off expensive gear. This includes cameras (unless you’re taking photos), jewelry, watches, and make sure your wallet is secure and close to you.
  • Keep on top of your visa situation. Many nationalities require a visa in advance to stay for a maximum of 30 days. You can use an online visa agent as well, which could be the easiest way.
  • Plan for traffic. Known for its large quantity of bikers, there’s a lot of traffic and a lot of honking. When on the road, it’s complete lawlessness and chaos, so be prepared. When crossing the road you do need to be assertive but watch out for oncoming traffic.
  • The exchange rate is confusing. Most times, when dealing with money it’s going to be in 6 figures. For example, 100 USD currently equals around 2,340,000 Vietnamese Dong. When you’re paying, it’s easy for someone to rip you off as making mistakes/purposeful errors with notes is also simple when dealing with so many.
  • Don’t drink the tap water. Better yet, don’t drink any water at all unless it’s a sealed bottle of water.

Chung was a fantastic guide and very friendly. He took us to various different places that specialised in 1 particular dish that they did really well. Some were in locations that we essentially would not have ventured to confidently by ourselves such as Pho Suong which was down a tiny backstreet and serves the best Pho. We were absolutely stuffed by the end of the tour and would wholeheartedly recommend this as an introduction to Vietnamese Street food to anyone visiting Hanoi for the first time for the food, friendliness of the guide and the tips on how to eat each dish as well (invaluable 😀). 16 unique things to do in Hanoi

Marco Ferrarese

JANUARY 21, 2018: People eating at a street café in the old quarter of Hanoi.

From street food to the respite of Hoan Kiem Lake, here are the best things to do in Hanoi © Daniel William / Shutterstock

Visiting Hanoi is like hopping through a time tunnel: beyond congested roads flanked by modern skyscrapers, ancient temples and multi-storey pagodas rub elbows with French colonial mansions in the labyrinthine Old Quarter.

Both stubbornly traditional and forward-looking, bustling Hanoi largely resisted the light-speed advancements that are sweeping across the rest of the nation, and the city often confounds first-time visitors. This list of the top things to do in Hanoi can help you hit the ground running and make perfect sense of the best that Vietnam 's most historical city has to offer.

Explore Hoan Kiem Lake

uc Bridge over the Hoan Kiem Lake .The wooden red-painted bridge connects the shore and the Jade Island on which Ngoc Son Temple

Opening like a tear to the east of the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake offers some freshwater and green respite to Hanoi's hustle. On its northern edge, the Ngoc Son Temple sits on a small island connected to the shore via the scarlet Cau The Huc bridge. Early in the morning, the lakeside fills with residents practicing tai chi, and on weekends, the 7pm to midnight traffic ban gives the area a funfair vibe.

Dive into the Old Quarter

A street scene with many customers sat at stools outside a restaurant on the edge of the road. Vietnamese flags (red with a yellow star) hang along the street.

Explore Old Quarter effortlessly with GetYourGuide.  Book your tour today .

Located in Ba Dinh district near the business area, Hanoi's Old Quarter is the city's busiest attraction, and it’s an unmissable attack to the senses. Buzzing motorbikes maneuver around people in large conical straw hats pushing carts laden with goods along streets lined with French colonial buildings. Come right after sunrise when the light casts ethereal hues over the century-old facades, and find only the most industrious locals busy setting up shop for the day. Signing up for a walking food tour with a local is another good way to explore the quarter’s 36 streets and the best dishes that represent them.

Hunt for the best bun cha

If the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain chose to treat Barack Obama to a taste of this quintessential bowl of grilled pork, herbs and noodles, Hanoi’s bun cha must really be quite special. Bún Chả Hương Liên , the hole-in-the-wall restaurant where the duo dined in 2016, has become legendary, but the fun is going around town scouring for worthy competitors. Two good places to start are Lotte Center Hanoi in Ba Dinh and Bún Chả Ba Duc in Quan Ba Dinh.

Watch a water puppet show

Musician playing traditional instrument at a water puppet theatre

Vietnamese water puppetry originated in the 11th century from the flooded paddy fields of the Red River Delta, and visitors shouldn't miss this unique local form of art when in Hanoi. Expert puppeteers maneuver wooden figurines tied to long poles over pools that serve as liquid stages, using water splashes to choreographic three-dimensional effect. Hanoi’s most famous Water Puppet theater is Thang Long in the city center, hosting up to five multi-lingual shows per day.

Marvel at St. Joseph Cathedral

Standing guard between the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, St. Joseph Cathedral is one of Hanoi's most iconic architectural landmarks. Built in 1886, its neo-Gothic style is modeled after Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral. It's the oldest church in Vietnam's capital and serves the city’s small catholic population. Visitors can enter the church’s hall only during mass, which takes place at 6:15pm daily on weekdays and seven times per day on Sundays.

Learn to cross the road

A red flag with a yellow star in the center hangs low over a street packed with motorcyclists

Crossing through street traffic in Hanoi is a real cultural adventure and a way to get in tune with the city’s rhythms. To the untrained eye, Hanoi’s constant flow of cars and endless lines of motorbikes may look like an impenetrable wall of deadly chaos, but the trick is to be slow, steady, and predictable. Drivers are very much used to dodging pedestrians as they approach, and honking is just a polite way to signal when someone is near. The hardest part is grasping the courage to step off the sidewalk and start walking... especially for the first time.

Drink the world’s cheapest beer

Hanoi is home to bia hoi , touted as "the world's cheapest beer" because it’s sold for between 5000 and 7000VND per glass (US$0.22 to 0.31). Made from fermented maize, bia hoi  is served and consumed by the roadside while patrons sit and chat casually on low plastic stools. Hanoi’s busiest drinking spot is the Beer Corner — the intersection between Tha Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen in the Old Quarter — a whole road crammed with red plastic chairs, locals, tourists and the echo of their bragging rights.

Try as much banh mi as you can

Vietnamese woman preparing street food in a baguette

Born in Saigon as a simple working-class sandwich stuffed with pickled vegetables, cilantro, French ham and home-made pork liver pate, bahn mi is sold from street carts as a hearty breakfast or midday meal. From humble beginnings, it has risen to become a proper foodie obsession, particularly among foreign tourists and overseas Vietnamese, who even started reproducing the heavenly bread at home. The whole of Hanoi is a fair bahn mi playground, with stalls and shops dishing it up at every corner. One of the best is Bahn Mi 25 in Hoan Kiem District, which also offers vegan and vegetarian options.

Try ostrich meat in Son Tay

Believe it or not, ostrich farming has become one of North Vietnam's most profitable enterprises. The Ba Vi mountains near Son Tay, a favorite weekend getaway for Hanoi locals, are a popular spot to try the meat of the African bird while in Asia. It's usually served fried, as a meatloaf, or boiled with vegetables in a hot pot. If exotic meat doesn't appeal, Ba Vi's homegrown hill chickens, fried with fresh peppers, are the best alternative.

Check out the music and art scene

From DJ nights to jazz and alternative rock bands, Hanoi’s nightlife has a few well-established venues basking in music and arts. Since 2010, Hanoi Rock City has hosted live bands, electronic and experimental music, art events and a regular open mic night on Wednesdays. Savage in Tay Ho District opened in 2016 to quickly rise as the city's electronic music club of choice, where both resident and international DJs come to spin the best house and techno beats.

For real strings and shiny brasses head to Binh Minh Jazz Club in the Old Quarter, where a selection of good whiskey pairs to live local jazz ensembles on most nights. The Hanoi Social Club in Hoan Kiem also regularly hosts arts events, besides being a favorite all-day meeting spot to socialize over coffee and beers.

Find calm at the Temple of Literature

Hidden by a walled compound sheltering five separate courtyards, the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu) was built in 1070 under the Ly Thanh Tong dynasty to honor Confucius. The complex also served as Vietnam's first national university. Today, the temple is not just one of Hanoi's most striking, but also a perfectly quiet place to take a break from the city's constant activity. Whether strolling in one of its five perfectly-manicured gardens, or paying homage to Confucius' philosophy at his dedicated altars, the Temple of Literature is an oasis of quiet introspection.

Visit Vietnam’s Museum of Ethnology

Completed in 1997, this museum pays respect to Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups. It’s particularly handy for those short on time and interested in anthropology: the staggering collection of 15,000 artifacts and 42,000 photographs on display give a quick and comprehensive ethnographic tour of this highly diverse nation. The gardens host a life-sized outdoor collection of traditional houses from Vietnam’s most prominent ethnic groups.

Have an egg coffee in the Old Quarter

Egg yolk coffee, or ca phe trung , is a mixture of espresso with sugar, condensed milk and egg yolk. Invented in 1946 while trying to make cappuccino, the whisked egg yolks were used as a surrogate of the then scarce milk. That trick established this frothy, savory and uniquely Vietnamese brew as a real national success.

Ca Phe Trung can be found in a number of cities across Vietnam, but Cafe Giang in Hanoi’s Old Quarter is where it all started, and where the inventor's son still dishes up the original recipe today. The Note Cafe is also worth a visit, not just for its coffee, but for its very photogenic walls plastered with thousands of hand-written messages left by customers from all over the world.

Learn about Do Paper at Zó Project

Tucked to the south of Hanoi’s West Lake , Zó Project ’s tiny boutique focuses on unique handmade products realized with Vietnamese Dó paper ( giấy Dó ). Produced manually following ancient techniques from the bark of the endemic Rhamnoneuron balansae tree, this heavy-duty, fibrous paper is believed to be able to last up to 800 years. Established in 2013 by Tran Hong Nhung, the social enterprise Zó Project aims at preserving the art of Dó paper-making by working closely with the only two families of traditional artisans left in the village of Bac Ninh, 25 miles (40km) northeast of Hanoi.

The front of a train engine on the rails that run along a narrow street lined with shop fronts

Have a glass of rice liquor by Train Street’s narrow tracks

Since 2018, sitting with a drink on either side of the narrow railway passage on Tran Phu road in the Old Quarter has become some kind of tourist rite of passage in Hanoi. Known as “Train Street” , the homes along this 300m (984ft) stretch of city rail line turned into feel-good cafes and started spilling tables and serving drinks way too close to the passing trains. The street’s constant surge in popularity forced authorities to try to close the shops down in October 2019 to avoid accidents, but Train Street's cafes have kept operating discreetly. The best time to visit is probably when no trains are approaching: without the crowds, one is freer to observe how real local life unfolds on both sides of this narrow city rail track.

Escape to Tam Coc’s rice terraces

One of the most popular day trips from Hanoi is to the Unesco-inscribed Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh province , about three hours from the capital. Think jade-green valleys backed by limestone karsts flanked by the meandering channels of the Red River Delta.

The village of Tam Coc and its viewpoints that dominate ever-changing shades of paddy fields are as popular as taking a slow boat ride along the Ngo Dong River. Spending at least a night here makes it easier to enjoy the scenery without the crowds. Don't forget the Mua Cave viewpoint, a sweaty 486-step climb to the top of an imposing limestone mountain, where an altar to Goddess of Mercy Quan Am dominates the valley and the snaking river below.

Act Now or Miss Out: The 10 U.S. Cities Where Homes Are Selling Faster Than Anywhere Else

The spring housing market may be off to a rocky start , but that doesn’t mean buyers can take it easy if they hope to succeed in purchasing a home.

While homes nationwide spent a median of 50 days on the market in March, they’re selling in less than half of that time in certain places, according to the most recent Realtor.com® data for median days on the market in the 200 largest metropolitan areas.

These fast-moving markets are spread out across the country, excluding the South. Some of these places are affordable, such as Rochester, NY , which tied for No. 2 on our list and on our most recent hottest markets ranking , where buyers can score a home for a median of $279,900 in March. Others are among the most expensive in the country, such as Silicon Valley’s San Jose, CA , which also tied for the No. 2 spot, where the median home costs $1.48 million.

These places tend to have lower unemployment rates, says Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale . Several have strong tech industries as well.

“Many of them are fairly expensive markets,” says Hale. “When prices are high, it’s expensive to just let [properties] sit when you’re trying to sell.”

Four of these brisk real estate markets are in the Boston area. These metropolitan areas include Manchester, NH , the No. 1 metro on our list, which was named America’s hottest housing market 22 times over the past three years. The other Boston-area markets are Worcester, MA , at No. 4; Boston , at No. 5; and Springfield, MA , at No. 7.

“You’ve [also] got markets that are close to popular, large markets,” says Hale.

Manchester, about an hour northwest of Boston, “is a very competitive market,” says local real estate broker Pamela Young , of eXp Realty. “An agent will delay showings until the open house. People go to the open house, and there’s 70 people there. Typically, an offer will come in from the open house.”

About 70.1% of those looking for homes in the Manchester area are from other states, according to Realtor.com data . Roughly 20% were from Boston and its suburbs, while 10.6% were from Manhattan.

That’s because buying a home in the Manchester metro area, with a median list price of $549,000, is about 37% cheaper than in the Boston area, where the median home price was $879,950 in March.

Young has seen homes sell within four days of being listed. These properties are typically in good condition and priced below what they’re worth to create competitive bidding.

As the stock market has soared, more people have jumped into the San Francisco Bay Area housing market, competing for a very limited number of homes for sale, says Patrick Carlisle , chief market analyst for the Bay Area for Compass.

The Bay Area includes the priciest markets on our list, San Jose and San Francisco , which tied for sixth place.

“It’s the hottest the market has been since the pre-pandemic housing boom. It’s the home of Nvidia, Google, Apple,” says Carlisle. “When people feel a lot wealthier, they feel better about buying a new home.”

So where do buyers need to pick up the pace? Here are the top 10 metros where homes are selling the fastest, plus how long it takes.

Miles Russell, 15, earns another Korn Ferry Tour start with top-25 finish

Cards final-round 66 at lecom suncoast classic, youngest to top-25 on record.

Change Text Size

After a historic made cut at the LECOM Suncoast Classic, high school freshman Miles Russell could’ve been forgiven for cruising through the weekend, relishing his accomplishment before returning to Earth science, geometry and the standard cadence of life as a high school freshman.

Russell, 15, had other ideas.

Russell shook off a slow start Saturday – 4 over through three holes – to grind out a third-round, 1-under 70 at Lakewood National Golf Club’s Commander course, and he turned on the jets with a final-round, 5-under 66 that included seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch (Nos. 4-13). That was good for a T20 finish at 14-under 270, becoming the youngest player on record (since 1983) to notch a top-25 finish on the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour.

With the top-25 finish, Russell also qualifies for next week's Veritex Bank Championship in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. (Prior to turning 18, players are not eligible for non-member Korn Ferry Tour Points toward Special Temporary Membership.)

"It was an awesome week. It was a blast," Russell said afterward. "Especially for my first one, you may get a couple weird looks, like, 'Who's the little kid on the range?' But, you know, everybody was so nice and so helpful with everything.

"I just try to kind of go with flow and take it as it comes to me, and I'm trying to just stay cool. I was able to hit some good shots in the right moments."

The Jacksonville Beach, Florida, resident authored history this week as the youngest player to make a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at 15 years, 5 months, 18 days (surpassing Gipper Finau at the 2006 Utah Championship) and captivated the greater golf world with his combination of youthful firepower (17 birdies, three eagles) and veteran poise. He arrived at Lakewood National with belief in his abilities to compete at this level, a humble confidence that he backed up with four consecutive under-par rounds in competition. Russell shot 31 on his first nine Thursday and kept the pedal down through the weekend, unfazed by the moment as the buzz continued to build.

Russell, the AJGA's top-ranked junior, cannot join the Korn Ferry Tour this year, or next year, or the year after. But he’s welcome to stay around for a while if the results correspond. Seventy-two holes in west Florida have proven that he’s got the requisite game, here and now.

Miles Russell, 15, becomes youngest to make cut on Korn Ferry Tour

Russell advanced to the weekend with ease, opening the LECOM in rounds of 68-66 to finish three strokes inside the 36-hole cut line. His first three holes Saturday represented a test of adversity – a double bogey at No. 1, followed by bogeys at 2 and 3. But the reigning winner of the Junior PLAYERS and Junior PGA Championship remained poised, going bogey-free the rest of the day while adding an eagle and three birdies. It meant that rather than holding a spot near the bottom of the board, he stood T48 into Sunday, three strokes off the pace for a top-25 finish.

He was within striking distance and he took advantage. It means another week on the Korn Ferry Tour and the valuable experience that accompanies it.

"When I play well, I think I can compete with some of the better pros, but this week I played well and I think it kind of showed it a little bit," Russell said. "But good play is always good, and definitely confidence-boosting to finish where we're going to finish today."

Russell was safely inside the top 25 at the time, but plenty of competitors remained on the course who could have bumped him out. His number held up, though, for the first top-25 on record by a player under age 16. Another historical marker for a player too young for a driver's license but whose game is on the road to the Lone Star State.

Scottie Scheffler reacts after a putt on the ninth hole during the final round of the RBC Heritage ... [+] golf tournament, Sunday, April 21, 2024, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

The world’s top-ranked golfer is dominating the PGA Tour. Scottie Scheffler won the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Monday morning following a weather delay and restart late Sunday—his fourth win in his last five starts. He added a tartan plaid jacket to his second green jacket at The Masters , which followed wins at The Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational .

Scheffler carded an 8 under par 63 on Saturday to take a 1-stroke lead over Sepp Straka and 2 strokes ahead of his final round playing partner at The Masters, Collin Morikwa. Both those players shot a 1 over par 72 in the final round to fall back.

Scheffler entered Sunday’s final round as the -165 favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook to win the tournament with Straka and Morikawa both +650 and Masters runner-up Ludvig Aberg +1100 sitting 3 shots behind. Scottie was +450 to win at the start of the RBC Heritage .

Golf’s 27-year-old superstar was 3 under par through 11 holes Sunday and 19 under par with a 4-shot lead over six players when play was suspended before resuming 2 1/2 hours later at 7 p.m. ET. Scheffler played three more holes and took a 5-stroke lead into Sunday evening as play was suspended for darkness.

Early Monday he finished off the $20 million signature event with a 3-shot victory at 19 under par to earn another $3.6 million and take his season total to over $18 million. His bogey on the 18th hole ended a streak of 68 consecutive holes at par or better. Sahith Theegala finished second while Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark T3 and Justin Thomas part of a 4-way tie for fifth.

Huawei s Pura 70 Ultra Beats iPhone With Pioneering New Feature

Sh gun episode 10 review a powerful finale but not what i was expecting, the trump media stock price djt is about to adjust down by 22 7.

Justin Ray, golf Lead Data Analyst, added a number of posts on X to show Scheffler’s run of dominance. Beyond Scottie being the last player since Tiger Woods in 2008 to win four times in a five-start stretch on the PGA Tour, this post about Scheffler holding the lead following a round 31 times on Tour the past three seasons speaks to Scottie’s spectacular play and dominance. The next closest player to have led or co-led following a round is 16 times.

Scheffler ramains the No. 1 ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings for the 49th consecutive week. His win at Harbour Town was also the 10th of his career on Tour. It took him 51 tournaments to win his 10th PGA Tour title following his first win. Tiger Woods did it in 59 events with David Duval the fastest from wins 1 to 10 at 33 starts.

Scheffler’s strokes gained stats are simply staggering. Scheffler ranks No. 1 in SG: Total, Tee to Green, Approach, No. 2 Off the Tee and top-10 Around the Green. He’s continued to win despite ranking outside the top 150 in SG: Putting. Scheffler gained more than a stroke both off the tee and on approach shots in his first three rounds at Harbour Town. He has done this in 27.2% of his rounds over the last three seasons. The rest of the PGA Tour has done it 4.7% of the time.

Scheffler then finished off another victory with a strong performance on Sunday at Harbour Town that included this chip-in for eagle from 53 feet off the front right short rough on the Par 5 at hole No. 2.

He’s now played 40 rounds in 2024 and has yet to shoot a round over par. It’s 44 in a row dating back to last year’s Tour Championship in August. Tiger Woods currently holds the Tour record at 52 rounds shooting par or better, which he set during the 2000-01 season.

Scheffler’s desire to win and determination to be the best is shining through despite any pressure that may mount. He’s nearly locked up 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year honors before the end of April, and commented on his play and performances following rounds 3 and 4 while dealing with any added pressure.

Internally, do you feel less pressure compared to a few months ago when you're out there playing?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: It's tough to answer. I mean, I talked about it a bit at the end of last week. I really love winning, and I don't really like losing at all. It's one of those things where I try to manage the expectations of myself, kind of get that stuff out of the way and then go out there and compete.

Scheffler also added 700 FedEx Cup Playoffs Points to his total by winning the Signature Event at the RBC Heritage. He tops the points list with 3,915 - more than double Wyndham Clark (1,892) with Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg and Sahith Theegala next at more than 1,500 points.

Scheffler is scheduled to compete in the Wells Fargo Championship May 9-12 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC - another $20 million Signature Event. He should be a first-time father by then with wife Meredith expecting their child very soon.

“I definitely will enjoy the birth of my first child, and my priorities will change very soon, so golf will be fourth in line, but I still love competing,” he said last Sunday in the Butler Cabin at The Masters .

He competed at the highest level again without a letdown to win the RBC Heritage. Scheffler will enter the next major as the +450 favorite at the PGA Championship May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY. FanDuel Sportsbook also has Scheffler at +6500 odds to win the Grand Slam and all four majors this year.

Scottie Scheffler is showing no signs of letdown and fans and bettors continue to support him despite ultra-low odds to win not seen since Tiger Wood’s dominance.

You can bet on it.

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour. Just ask  this week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler .

Scottie Scheffler enters Tiger territory with fourth win in five starts

hanoi top tour

Scottie Scheffler looked human as recently as Thursday, when his shank out of a bunker on Harbour Town’s third hole led to a double bogey in the first round of the Heritage. The flub was understandable: Scheffler was only four days removed from his second Masters win , and he spoke openly about his fatigue and lack of preparation entering the Heritage, an elevated event on the PGA Tour schedule that featured a strong, invitation-only field.

After a pedestrian 2-under-par 69 amid favorable scoring conditions in the tournament’s first round, Scheffler sat in a tie for 26th place, six shots behind leader J.T. Poston. At the end of Monday’s weather-delayed final round in Hilton Head Island, S.C., Scheffler stood atop the leader board by three strokes, winning his fourth tournament in five starts to continue his Tiger Woods-esque run of dominance.

Woods was the last male golfer to win four times in five starts, in 2007 and 2008. Scheffler’s lone miss in this absurd run? A tie for second at the Houston Open, where he missed a short putt that would have forced a playoff with eventual champion Stephan Jäger.

In his past 50 starts, Scheffler has nine wins, 22 finishes in the top three and 34 finishes in the top 10.

Believe this is the definition of "floodgates." pic.twitter.com/T24EVfmZxs — Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) April 22, 2024

“Coming into this week, I didn’t have my usual prep work,” Scheffler, who became the first golfer since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to follow up a Masters win with a victory the next week at the Heritage, told CBS Sports after clinching the victory. “Got off to a slow start on Thursday, but I played some real nice golf in the middle of the tournament.

“Yeah, it’s nice to be done.”

Scheffler’s wife, Meredith, is due to give birth to the couple’s first child in the next few weeks, and the world No. 1 has said he would have exited mid-tournament had she gone into labor. But the baby has yet to arrive, which gave Scheffler time to complete the Masters-Heritage double. Scheffler probably will not play again until next month’s PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, where he will attempt to become only the eighth golfer to win the first two major championships of the year (the last was Jordan Spieth in 2015).

That double bogey at the third hole Thursday would be Scheffler’s last above-par hole until an inconsequential bogey at No. 18 on Monday, when his win was well in hand. He went a combined 14 under in the second and third rounds to take the lead entering Sunday, and his 3-under 68 in the final round cinched the deal.

Sahith Theegala also shot a 68 in the final round to finish alone in second place. Wyndham Clark and Patrick Cantlay were another stroke back in a tie for third.

Sunday’s final round was halted by darkness with a few players left on the course after heavy rain rolled through Hilton Head Island, causing a long delay. The tournament resumed at 8 a.m. Eastern on Monday, and Scheffler finished with two pars and the bogey at 18.

If we are to assume that Ted Scott, Scheffler’s caddie, gets paid on the usual 5-7-10 scale (5 percent of a player’s winnings for making the cut, 7 percent for a top-10 finish, 10 percent for a victory), he has made somewhere in the vicinity of $1.78 million already this year. If Scott were a golfer, that would rank in the top 50 on the money list .

How to buy madonna tickets for 2024 tour.

Madonna is wrapping up her current concert tour over the next few days with a trilogy of shows in Mexico City. Prices have been climbing over recent days, so you'll have to be sharp if you want to buy Madonna tickets for these dates while you can for the The Celebration Tour.

Before she takes her final bow of the Celebration Tour concert series in April 2024, Madonna will have performed 52 shows across 27 cities in the US, Canada, and Mexico. While many dates earlier in the tour were available for under $100, these final dates will cost you at least $245 at the time of writing. Still, it's a few grand cheaper than the Swifties have been paying this year.

  • More events: Olivia Rodrigo tickets | Taylor Swift tickets | Adele tickets | Rolling Stones tickets

With the concert series being a retrospective celebration of her iconic career, The Celebration Tour's setlist unsurprisingly includes plenty of Madonna's timeless hits. Songs like "Like a Prayer," "Vogue," "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," and "Like a Virgin" have been performed across various dates on her tour.

We've got you covered if you're still looking for tickets to Madonna's Celebration Tour. Here's our breakdown of Madonna's remaining 2024 tour schedule, purchasing details, and original and resale ticket prices. You can also browse the available tickets for sale on StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

How to buy tickets for Madonna's 2024 concert tour

Madonna tickets have been on sale for a while now, so all original ones via Ticketmaster are long gone.

However, Madonna tickets are still available through verified resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

How much do Madonna tickets cost?

The price for standard original tickets to Madonna's 2024 tour varies depending on date, location, and demand. For example, concert dates in major cities like New York City tend to be more expensive.

Standard original tickets still available on Ticketmaster a few weeks ago  were comparable to prices on verified resale platforms. However, the remaining original tickets have all been snapped up though, so resale vendors are your only hope now.

The Celebration Tour originally had VIP tickets available for premium prices. Madonna's 2024 concert series had The Immaculate VIP Package, Iconic VIP Package), You Can Dance Premium Ticket Package, and Where's The Party Premium Ticket Package. The prices for original tickets for each package on Ticketmaster started at $1,750, $895, $545, and $475, respectively.

Who is opening for Madonna's tour?

Madonna has not announced any additional opening acts for her 2024 concert dates. However, the artist is joined by Bob the Drag Queen, a special guest in each of her shows, who helps introduce the concert and interacts with Madonna as the emcee.

Madonna's 2024 tour began with the international leg in Europe, so the only remaining concerts in The Celebration Tour outside the United States are in Mexico.

In April, she'll have five performances in Mexico City, where she'll take her final bow of The Celebration Tour on April 26.
