Relax and enjoy in the Hotel Bar

Our beloved bar is one of the few bars open in the Amsterdam Red Light District area that is open 24 hours a day. Does this mean we will get all the unwanted visitors from the neighborhood? Not really, only hotel guests enjoy the privilege drinking in our bar.

We serve Heineken on draft, various bottled beers, spirits and soft drinks. Play a game of pool with your buddy and if you feel for a bite, have a ham/cheese toasty for a very reasonable price.

The bar atmosphere resembles an Irish pub. We serve beers on draft and on bottles, also many local and international alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. We have an excellent collection of special empty beer bottles. You are welcome to add your beer bottle to the shelf. You may find a beer bottle that maybe unknown to you. There is a corner dedicate to book crossing. Two computers are available with free internet connection

The Best Hotels in Amsterdam

Amsterdam , with its spider’s web of canals, charming quarters, and quirky corners, is the place to eschew purpose-built hotels and go for buildings with a past: converted canalside mansions, old schools, former almshouses, and more. When it comes to our pick of the best hotels in Amsterdam, expect rooms of all shapes and sizes, interiors from the hip to the headily luxurious, and all manner of decor, from starkly minimalist to antique-store clutter and the summits of contemporary design. Their restaurants are often among the most adventurous in town, and the bars are way out front on the best bars in Amsterdam scene.

Which part of Amsterdam is best to stay?

For the quintessential Amsterdam experience, a hotel in the historic central Canal District, happening De Pijp, museum-filled Zuid or über-charming Jordaan is a must, but there are also great places to be found in quarters west and east of the center and across the water behind Amsterdam Centraal Station.

What are the best cheap hotels in Amsterdam?

One of our favorite affordable places to stay in Amsterdam is The Weavery , a cozy two-room B&B within walking distance of the Van Gogh Museum , Stedelijk Museum for modern art, and Rijksmuseum .

Hotel de L'Europe

Hotel de L'Europe Arrow

In a city more known for its scene-y or slick design hotels, De L’Europe resides like a distinguished matriarch on the banks of the Amstel, overlooking the rippling waves—and tourist barges—of the river and higgledy-piggledy mustard-hued merchants’ houses. Once a 17th-century Renaissance-style inn on the site of former defense walls, the hotel has gradually gone upmarket under the ownership of the Heineken family since 1950. A Dutch-focused art collection peers from the walls and a lobby draped in floor-to-ceiling bronze silks and tarragon velvets envelops guests with mirror-walled nooks that become gossipy corners at night, soft-lit by antique crystal chandeliers and fueled by cocktails that mix cumin seeds with coriander-infused mezcal. Rooms are bathed in light and provide a televisual view of the moving city. Warm-floored marble bathrooms come stocked with Diptyque products, and super-king-sized beds are framed by geometric headboards. As a result of the hotel acquiring the buildings next door over the years, the show-stopper rooms are now the new ‘t Huys suites, overseen by creatives from the art and design world, such as Salle Privée and jeweler Bibi van der Velden, with more in the pipeline. One of the hotel’s biggest draws is Marie, the Côte d’Azur-inspired bistro, with perfect steak tartare and tarte tatin. For a blowout, the two-Michelin-starred Flore’s “conscious fine dining” offers such treats as North Sea crab with sour quince gel, chanterelle mushroom, and walnut leaf. — Jemima Sissons

Exterior of Pillow Maurits at the Park in Amsterdam

Pillows Maurits at the Park

Maurits at the Park is a sophisticated boutique hotel next to the leafy Oosterpark, a lesser-known, yet just as enticing,  Amsterdam neighborhood. Housed in a historic university building the Pillows’ team put a momentous effort into preserving every historical detail of, there are stained glass windows and colourful glazed bricks. Rooms are peppered across the old building and meander into the new as the architecture effortlessly transitions. The decor is inviting yet elegant, and the stone-colored tones and textures create a serene environment, while the floor-to-ceiling windows seamlessly connect the hotel and the park.

The hotel has two restaurants—the Spring Brasserie and Van Oost, their fine dining experience. The more casual Spring Brasserie offers fresh and delicious meals from breakfast to supper, while Van Oost, the brainchild of chef Floris van Straalen, celebrates worldly flavors via Dutch ingredients . And let us not forget Fitz’s bar, a plush, speakeasy-inspired bar perfect for enjoying a cocktail (or two!).

The Dylan Hotel Amsterdam The Netherlands

The Dylan Arrow

This place is intimate, exclusive, and quietly detached from the city’s hurly-burly, yet in the heart of the historic hotel district, with club-like armchairs and a fireplace in the lounge, and a sleeker dark-marble bar. Rooms—some large with canal views, others cozier under attic beams or facing onto a courtyard—are interspersed throughout two august canalside buildings and individually decorated: lush red and copper, perhaps, or cooler white, gray, and peppermint green. In Vinkeles restaurant (well-spaced tables in a brick-lined 18th-century bakery), chef Dennis Kuipers serves Michelin-starred new Dutch cuisine, with affordable options from the same kitchen in the bar/brasserie alongside.

Rooms of all shapes and sizes range up and down the stairs and along the passageways of 25 houses stretching between two canals. Designer Jacu Strauss makes delightful use of period features yet gives the hotel a smart-contemporary feel. There’s plenty of cheekiness, too: an archway built of books with a bicycle on top; a Delft porcelain rooster or some other souvenir-shop weirdness placed in a lamp; a wall of 18 brass trumpets (well, one is purple—a delivery error that somehow works). Jansz. restaurant serves assertive dishes—strong on flavor, with subtle twists.

Perfectly positioned between Amsterdam’s Big Three museums and the city’s chicest shopping street, the Conservatorium (once a music conservatory) combines original fin-de-siècle splendour (decorative tiles and brickwork) and witty references to its past life (a chandelier made of violins) with sleek, clean-lined contemporary design by Italian interior architect Piero Lissoni. Many of the rooms are duplexes under original high ceilings, mostly tightly minimalistic but comfortable and warmed by colourful touches. A vast, bright atrium lounge includes an excellent brasserie, while the smart Taiko restaurant upstairs offers superb Japanese–influenced cuisine. The Akasha spa ranks among the best in town, in or out of a hotel.

The Hoxton Amsterdam

The Hoxton Amsterdam Arrow

A magisterial canalside façade masks a welcoming, cozily stylish hotel: soft sofas, scuffed leather armchairs, mounds of cushions, and colorful scatter rugs fill a lobby lounge bar that is constantly teeming with locals as well as visitors. Vintage furniture rubs against modern design; dotted about are decorative biscuit tins, old prints and bric-à-brac sufficient to fill a hundred grannies’ attics. Rooms come in all shapes and sizes, with the same trendy but homely air, and the big, jolly Lotti’s restaurant (with retractable glass roof) serves plates of flavorful food—juicy burgers, veal with polenta—all day.

Hotel Arena

A former orphanage beside a park, this is now a haven of minimalism, enlivened by the odd piece of ’60s retro furniture and original 19th-century period design. It’s just east of the city center, but most sights are a mere 15 minutes away by tram. Rooms are comfortable and in the same white idiom, often with jet-black bathrooms; some are duplexes with high ceilings and large windows. A few look out over the park, as does a glass-walled cafe and restaurant with a large terrace that leans deliciously toward vegetarian.

Hotel V Nesplein

A Dutch design makeover has given funky new life to a former office building in a narrow city-center lane. Inside, old variety posters reference the street’s theater-district heritage, and a mix of retro furniture (butterfly chairs, ’60s sofas) jostles among mustard-colored walls, parquet floors, and designer cheekiness, such as an open hearth suspended from its own chimney. Rooms vary in shape and design, but most have good-sized bathrooms. Other pluses are the central location and highly popular restaurant and bar, crowded with creative types and spilling out onto a large terrace in good weather.

Grand Hotel Amrâth Arrow

The five-story, turreted Grand Hotel Amrâth occupies the former joint headquarters of a number of Dutch shipping companies and is the first example of the Amsterdam School architecture style, a zany Dutch take on Art Nouveau. It bristles with original features: stone-carved marine creatures, ornate ironmongery, a marble staircase topped by a high stained-glass ceiling. The rooms come with fabrics in carefully researched period designs and are spacious, with large bathrooms. There’s a good spa with a pool (equipped with a jet stream), an Amsterdam School-style cafe and a reasonably priced restaurant.

The College Hotel Arrow

The College is a 10-minute walk from the Concertgebouw and Big Three museums in one direction, and the cafes and restaurants of De Pijp in the other. Its name refers to both its 19th-century incarnation as a school and its current function as training hotel for hospitality-industry students. This means the occasional learner’s blip in service, but also that room rates are good value. Sometimes-gloomy school rooms and corridors are enlivened by large arrangements of flowers, contemporary Dutch art , and soothing colors. Rooms are comfortable, and the restaurant serves tasty standards by learner-chefs.

Hotel Okura Amsterdam

Hotel Okura Amsterdam Arrow

In hip foodie quarter De Pijp, not far from the main museums, the 23-floor Okura towers over low-rise central Amsterdam. Many rooms, as well as the chic Twenty Third Bar and Ciel Bleu restaurant on the top floor, have formidable views. Inside, soft colors, beautiful woods, and filtered light create an air of tranquillity. Staff match it with effortless politeness, and rooms and bathrooms are eminently luxurious. The restaurants share three Michelin stars between them: Ciel Bleu (adventurous new Dutch cuisine) has two and Yamazato (classical Japanese kaiseki) has one, and Serre brasserie a Bib Gourmand. There’s also a top-class gym and spa with a 60-foot pool.

Seven One Seven Hotel Amsterdam The Netherlands

Hotel Seven One Seven Arrow

Seven One Seven is a grand mansion in the heart of the Canal District, within easy walking distance of the main museums. Grand it may be, but inside it’s relaxed and domestic—rather like visiting the home of some very fortunate friends who happen to have a passion for antiques and curiosities. Expect honeymoon couples galore. There are nine sumptuously decorated suites named after artists, writers and composers, plus the more prosaically titled Room at the Top. There’s no bar or restaurant: you simply ring and order drinks or high tea in the library or drawing room from the charming staff.

Sweets Hotel

Bridge houses once used by operators to open and close drawbridges all over town (it’s now done electronically) have been converted with finesse and an exhilaratingly imaginative use of space into standalone hotel suites. Most of them are dinky, except for one or two that are relatively grand, and date from 1673 to 2009. Interiors in each pick up on the period—a touch of 18th-century opulence, perhaps, or Art Deco curves and angles – and mix in prime contemporary Dutch design. Views, by definition, are of the canals, and lodging in the suites provides an entrée into neighborhoods you might not otherwise reach.

The best hotels in Amsterdam for 2024

Amsterdam , with its spider’s web of canals, charming quarters and quirky corners, is the place to eschew purpose-built hotels and go for buildings with a past: converted canalside mansions, old schools, former almshouses and more. What are the best cheap hotels in Amsterdam?

Some of our favourite affordable places to stay in Amsterdam include Conscious Hotel Westerpark , where rooms start from £90 per night, and the rock-n'-roll-themed hotel Sir Adam Hotel , which is a short ferry ride away from Central Station. The Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam Arrow

The Hoxton group’s first Amsterdam hotel opened in 2015 across four townhouses on a city-centre canal; this 2023 sequel is a world apart, occupying a 1920s shipping-line HQ in the revived Eastern Docklands, a district that’s been gathering pace since the millennium. But the two share a similar interior-design palette, with two-tone painted walls, angular mid-century ceramics and furniture, and a flurry of geometric fabrics and rugs. The art on the walls is curated by local gallery Bisou, and includes a huge, Fifties-style tile mural above the raw seafood bar in the conservatory-style restaurant, an all-day hub for comfort food such as picahana steak, potato latkes and mussels in vermouth cream. The standalone Barbue bar, set in the original wood-lined booking hall, is one of the Hoxton’s finest – riffing on Argentinian serves such as the Cha Cha (gin, apricot brandy, fizz). Upstairs, waterfront rooms are the best, with several family options including bunk beds; for special occasions, book the Tower Room, with its spiral staircase leading up to a crow’s nest viewpoint. It's a hotel for a fresh perspective on the city, in an untouristy neighbourhood that’s just a short tram or cycle ride from the centre. Rick Jordan

Other pluses are the central location and highly popular restaurant and bar, crowded with creative types and spilling out onto a large terrace in good weather.

The Grand Hotel Amrath

Grand Hotel Amrâth

The five-storey, turreted Grand Hotel Amrâth occupies the former joint headquarters of a number of Dutch shipping companies and is the first example of the Amsterdam School architecture style, a zany Dutch take on Art Nouveau. It bristles with original features: stone-carved marine creatures, ornate ironmongery, a marble staircase topped by a high stained-glass ceiling. The rooms come with fabrics in carefully researched period designs and are spacious, with large bathrooms. There’s a good spa with a pool (equipped with a jet stream), an Amsterdam School-style café and a reasonably priced restaurant.

Sweets Hotel

Sweets Hotel

Bridge houses once used by operators to open and close drawbridges all over town (it’s now done electronically) have been converted with finesse and an exhilaratingly imaginative use of space into standalone hotel suites. Most of them are dinky, except for one or two that are relatively grand, and date from 1673 to 2009. Interiors in each pick up on the period – a touch of 18th-century opulence, perhaps, or Art Deco curves and angles – and mix in prime contemporary Dutch design. Views, by definition, are of the canals, and lodging in the suites provides an entrée into neighbourhoods you might not otherwise reach.

Bedroom at The College Hotel

The College Hotel

The College is 10 minutes’ walk from the Concertgebouw and Big Three museums in one direction, and the cafés and restaurants of De Pijp in the other, and its name refers to both its 19th-century incarnation as a school and its current function as training hotel for hospitality-industry students. This means the occasional learner’s blip in service, but also that room rates are good value. Sometimes-gloomy school rooms and corridors are enlivened by large arrangements of flowers, contemporary Dutch art and soothing colours. Rooms are comfortable, and the restaurant serves tasty standards by learner-chefs.

Superior City View Room at Hotel Okura

In hip foodie quarter De Pijp, not far from the main museums, the 23-floor Okura towers over low-rise central Amsterdam. Many rooms, as well as the chic Twenty Third Bar and Ciel Bleu restaurant on the top floor have formidable views. Inside, soft colours, beautiful woods and filtered light create an air of tranquillity. There’s also a top-class gym and spa with a 60ft pool.

Junior suite at Seven One Seven

Seven One Seven

Seven One Seven is a grand mansion in the heart of the Canal District, within easy walking distance of the main museums. Grand it may be, but inside it’s relaxed and domestic – rather like visiting the home of some very fortunate friends who happen to have a passion for antiques and curiosities. Expect honeymoon couples galore. There are nine sumptuously decorated suites named after artists, writers and composers, plus the more prosaically titled Room at the Top. There’s no bar or restaurant: you simply ring and order drinks or high tea in the library or drawing room from the charming staff.

Best Hotels in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Neighborhood

If you’re looking for a luxury city break, Amsterdam should be on your mind. The city is iconic (for many a reason, naughty and nice) and filled with budget escapes and luxury hotels that will exceed your expectations.

The hustle and bustle is a phenomenal experience. But having a safe, calm place to return to will turn your Dam trip into beautiful memories.

When I first went to this city as a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed travelling noob, I fucked up. I spent so much time commuting between my hotel and the city that I missed a lot of what makes Amsterdam so special. Booking a hotel that is a hub of relaxation nearby the famous Amsterdam canals will provide you with a peaceful oasis to escape to .

Not only do the hotels impress, but so do the culture and world-class museums. The Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum leave you with a fresh perspective of what life was like in this city all those years ago.

You could even have the best of BOTH worlds and find a hotel with a spa. A relaxing massage or rejuvenating facial to leave you feeling as good as you look. 😉 Spend time in the private sauna whilst looking at scenic city views.

We’ll discuss hotels in locations: city center, Amsterdam Oost, Amsterdam Zuid, and more. This Dam hotel guide also goes into depth over the amenities offered in the hotel, the quality of the rooms, and the surrounding attractions.

With cheeky boutique hotels and five-star hotels littered throughout the city, let’s get into the best hotels in Amsterdam!

Amsterdam

Selection Criteria

City center, amsterdam oost, de wallen – the red light district, amsterdam zuid, museum quarter / voldelpark, tips for booking a hotel in amsterdam, tips for booking a hotel in amsterdam on a budget, faqs about amsterdam’s hotels, discover amsterdam with the broke backpacker.

It is important to decipher the key factors when booking a hotel in Amsterdam. Here’s what you should consider:

  • Location  – Your location when visiting Amsterdam is arguably, the most important factor when booking a hotel. Whilst in the city centre, the prices will usually be higher, you will save money on transport costs. Whereas locations outside of the centre often are cheaper and have more charm.
  • Customer reviews and ratings –  As most people should agree, the reviews and ratings of hotels matter. Your experience at a hotel can make or break a trip. The best hotels in Amsterdam have many positive reviews – so look out for them!
  • Amenities and services  – Amenities and services are an important factor, especially when travelling with children. From spas, 24-hour reception, and pools, having hotels with modern amenities can elevate your trip.
  • Price range  – Budgets vary for each trip. This list caters to budget-friendly travellers and those looking for a more expensive getaway.
  • Unique features or experiences  – I have chosen hotels with unique features to make sure that your trip is filled with excitement. Each hotel has its own authentic experience to ensure you have a trip of a lifetime.

Amsterdam Canal Bridge Hotel

With all those factors considered, how you use this selection criteria will be determined by your circumstances. For example, if you want to be in the heart of the city, you may be happy to sacrifice the charm of the smaller neighborhoods to be closer to attractions. Think about what you like most when you’re on a city break, and let’s go from here…

Amsterdam City Center is the historical heart of Amsterdam. It’s the most popular area to stay in Amsterdam amongst tourists as you are directly encapsulated in the bustling streets, sleek canals, and the craziest of crazy attractions.

Despite hotel prices being slightly more pricey, you will likely find that by staying here, you will save money on transport costs. You’ll find Dam Square, The Royal Palace, The Sex Museum, Madame Tussauds, and endless canal-boat tours.

Here are the best hotels in the City Center.

Hotel 717

For a “home away from home” type of experience, I recommend you stay at Hotel 717. This private guest house is situated in a 19th-century building, but inside has every modern amenity you could need. This includes bathrobes, complimentary Wi-Fi, concierge services, and a bar and lounge.

The atmosphere here is relaxed, and you really get to soak in the ever-present, bright Amsterdam atmosphere. Before heading out, grab a plate of continental breakfast, where you can find a delicious full English breakfast with all the trimmings.

Hotel 717 is 14 km from the Schiphol Airport, one of Amsterdam’s most popular airports. You can also find the Anne Frank House and the Heineken experience just a short walk away.

Waldorf Astoria

Waldorf Astoria

For an experience of utter luxury, book your stay at Waldorf Astoria. This hotel is the perfect romantic getaway for a night of indulgence and high class.

Waldorf Astoria consists of six phenomenal 17th-century canal palaces that ooze elegance. The authentic Dutch-inspired design compliments the historic charm that makes this city.

While here, you’ll have views of the canal and courtyard garden, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and treatment rooms for relaxing massages. After you have wound-down in the spa, head to the Spectrum restaurant or Vault Bar for a glass of wine and rich, flavor-filled food.

Once you leave the hotel, you will be surrounded by things to do in Amsterdam , including visiting the vibrant Rembrandtplein and the Museum Quarter, which is home to three of the most famous (you’ve guessed it) museums in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Oost has charming streets with 19th century buildings and a more local feel. There are also a multitude of lush green areas to enjoy.

Take a stroll in this area and be greeted with vibrant markets, museums, and adorable cafes. There are also evening activities just as visiting the trendy brewery bars, wine hot spots, and some great coffeeshops if you want to enjoy the green stuff. These attributes alone make it a great area for a couples’ getaway.

Here are the best hotels in Amsterdam Oost.

Pillows Maurits at the Park

Pillows Maurits at the Park

Pillow Maurits at the Park is one of the best boutique hotels in Amsterdam and a foodie’s dream.

If you’re hoping to experience the food that Amsterdam has to offer, there simply isn’t a better place to stay. Begin your culinary journey with a mouth-watering lunch at the vibrant Spring Cafe/Brasserie. In the evening, have a rich dinner at the VanOost Restaurant before dancing the night away at Fitz’s Bar.

Continuing to exceed expectations, this hotel is also surrounded by popular tourist attractions, including the Royal Theater Carre, The Dutch National Opera and ballet house, and a gorgeous flower market. If you’re heading to Amsterdam in the summer , you can experience the hotel’s rooftop bar, which has the best views of Oosterpark.

The hotel offers safe, underground parking, which has charging points for electric vehicles – great if you are renting a car while you stay.

Wittenberg by Cove

This Amsterdam hotel is one of my favorites in the city for getting the best of both worlds. As well as being within walking distance to Dam Square and central station, you get some extra touches that most hotels don’t offer.

You’ll get your own stunning apartment in a monumental building for that true Dutch style stay. The rooms are beautifully light and homey. All accommodations also offer their own kitchen which helps those watching to save some money on food will love.

It’s perfect for digital nomads who like a quiet space to balance work and life. This is also one of the best hotels for families in Amsterdam so your brood can have all the space they need.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

De Wallen, also known as the red light district, is one of the city’s oldest parts. There is a huge juxtaposition within this area; with charming churches and scenic canal walks, that debauchery is something particularly unique that you should see with your own eyes.

You should be cautious of petty crimes such as pickpocketing in this area, especially at night. However, don’t let that put you off visiting, as this area is generally safe and is home to many popular things to do in Amsterdam.

Here are the best hotels in De Wallen.

Anantara Grand Hotel

Anantara Grand Hotel

Looking to stay in the heart of Amsterdam? Well then, you need to book a stay at the Anantara Grand Hotel.

The five-star hotel is in a prime location, opposite the Royal Palace and on the edge of the famous Dam Square. The attractions also encompass the high-class atmosphere with famous museums, high-end shopping and extravagant restaurants.

This unique hotel offers apartment-style accommodation with the added benefits of a luxury hotel. Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel

Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel

Kicking off this list with a bang is Pestana Amsterdam Riverside, a luxury five-star hotel, which is surprisingly one of the great value hotels in Amsterdam. This absolutely monumental building that was formerly a town hall has been converted into a luxurious place to stay.

The hotel has 154 bedrooms and suites, each with its own unique identity. The rooms are equipped with modern amenities and home comforts such as free toiletries, coffee and tea-making facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms. Some suites have panoramic river-side views that simply cannot be missed.

Before heading out to the nearby attractions such as Albert Cuypmarkt street market, The Heineken Experience, and Stedelijk Museum, you can dine at the private buffet breakfast.

hotel travel amsterdam

Wellness is a priority at the Van der Valk Hotel. Visit the wellness center to unwind after a long day of sightseeing before turning in for the night. The wellness center has different types of saunas, including a heated outdoor pool, foot baths, and steam baths.

This hotel also offers an extensive breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet, so you can always return to the hotel for a bite to eat. You can even stop by for their live cooking dinner buffet with delectable slices of pizza. If you fancy a midnight snack, you can visit Bar Mokum for coffee, cocktails, and pastries – one of my favorite bars in the city!

The Museumkwartier area was developed after the construction of the Rijksmuseum. Subsequently, this area is better known as the Museum Quarter with several famous museums in the neighborhood.

It’s important to keep in mind that this area is often filled with tourists and can get extremely busy during the day. If you want to avoid crowds, visit attractions as early as possible.

Here are the best hotels in Museumkwartier.

Conservatorium Hotel

Conservatorium Hotel

Slightly more pricey than other hotels mentioned, the Conservatorium is in the middle of Amsterdam’s hotspots.

The hotel combines historical architecture and modem design to create tasteful rooms. Bask in rainfall showers, spacious bathrooms, marble tubs, and LCD mirrors inside the rooms.

The hotel also has a brasserie in a gorgeous glass courtyard where you can have a graceful afternoon tea. But that is not all: guests have complimentary access to the Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre, which has a large swimming pool, a sauna, a whirlpool, and more.

You can cut travel costs by choosing this location as you are next to the Van Gogh Museum, the Royal Concert Hall, and the Rijksmuseum.

College Hotel

College Hotel

An oasis of peace and quiet is how the College Hotel is best described. This 19th-century historical building boasts classic charm with a modern twist. Each room has complimentary Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, bathrobes, and fluffy slippers to make your stay simply divine. Walk through this Amsterdam boutique hotel and be welcomed by a delicious summer lunch on the terrace.

Park Plaza Vondelpark

Park Plaza Vondelpark

You can also find Museum Square here for a day of exploring Amsterdam’s history .

This location offers direct access to popular attractions such as the Van Gogh Museum, Dam Square, and Leidse Square, making this a hotel not to miss.

Hard Rock Hotel

Hard Rock Hotel

Faultless customer service in a hotel filled with historical stories. Could you get any better than that? The Hard Rock Hotel is a staple when it comes to the question of where to stay in Amsterdam.

The rooms are very comfortable, with air conditioning, a fridge, a kettle, and a shower. They also host a continental or buffet breakfast serving all your morning favorites.

If you only have a short weekend in Amsterdam , this hotel is perfect as it is perfectly located to access several attractions quickly.

Hotel Park 6

Hotel Park 6

This 19th-century building is located on one of the most elegant streets in Amsterdam. Hotel Park 6 was recently renovated and now has thirty refreshing rooms with walk-in showers, queen-size beds, and wireless sound systems. Depending on the room you book, you may even be spoiled with a terrace or French balcony.

Hotel Park 6 is the perfect relaxing retreat just far enough outside the busy city center. If you’re an early riser, cross the road to Vondelpark to watch the sunrise before returning to the hotel for a simple yet filling breakfast.

Nearby attractions include many of the best museums in Amsterdam like the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

Amsterdam is a surprisingly small city and has great transport options. With that in mind, you should think twice about where you choose to stay.

Whilst the city center is often popular amongst tourists, staying here is only ideal for those that have a short trip. If you are staying in Amsterdam for a couple of days, being right by the attractions is convenient. However, if your stay is longer, these areas can get very crowded and noisy.

making money and busking

If your trip is longer, opt for hotels in neighborhoods out of the center. You’ll find hidden gems and way more green spaces.

Also keep in mind that Amsterdam is popular all year round. The nicest hotels in Amsterdam seem to get booked quickly. You should book your hotel as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.

Amsterdam experiences its peak tourism in May and August. This is when hotel prices are at their highest.

To avoid expensive hotel prices, try and book your trip outside of these months. September and October are great times to visit as the weather starts to cool and the fall foilage starts to bloom. The hotel prices also tend to decrease during this time.

If you’re on a tighter budget, Amsterdam’s bed and breakfasts are a great combo. Although arguably not as sleek, they offer a unique stay to set you up for your trip.

Let’s do a quick-fire round! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Dam’s hotels.

Which are the best hotels in Amsterdam City Center?

These are 3 of my favorite hotels in the beating heart of Dam: Hotel 717 Waldorf Astoria Hotel Estherea

Are there any good cheap hotels in Amsterdam?

Yes! Though for the better quality, it’s best to stay a little further out as the cheap options in the city center are cheap for a (bad) reason. Motel One is great budget hotel in Amsterdam with great connections to the city and the airport.

Can I stay in a boutique hotel in Amsterdam?

You bet your ass you can. Amsterdam has some of the best boutique hotels in the world. I highly recommend Ecomama (although they offer dorm accommodation too). Check out the list to find that perfect unique stay for you.

What are hotels in Amsterdam like for couples?

Oh damn, they fine. I tell you what, there’s something about the sex capital of the world that makes for some red hot nights in hotels. Check out the hotels in the Museum Quarter / Vondelpark area!

It goes without saying that Amsterdam delivers when it comes to a city vacation destination. With available transport options ready to take you to every famous destination and connecting trains and trams that will take you across the city, you will never be short of things to do in Amsterdam.

So much history, charm, and character is just waiting to be uncovered here. Explore museums, visit historic sites, and take in the incredible architecture.

In my opinion, this article has some of the best hotels in Amsterdam. And although you may be spoiled for choice, I am sure that the one you choose will make your stay sublime.

Whether it is a budget-friendly hotel or a luxurious hotel with a spa, it’s important to find the hotel that matches your needs. With all that being said, your trip to Amsterdam will undoubtedly be a trip of a lifetime.

More About Amsterdam

Brightly painted bicycles, fields of boldly-hued tulips, vibrant images captured on canvas, and glowing lanterns reflected off the waterways at night - this is a city full of history and color. Home of world-class art museums dedicated to Dutch painters such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt, the beauty found inside is also reflected in the architecture and nature found outside. Day trips in the city can easily be filled with sampling Dutch cheeses and pastries while strolling picturesque bridges, comparable with those in Venice or Bruges. Or take a short drive to see the iconic windmills and flower gardens of the Netherlands. Culture, nature, and adventure are awaiting in Amsterdam.

Summer is the most popular tourist season for Amsterdam, though there are great reasons to visit throughout the year. April and May, though a bit chilly, is a great time to see the fields of tulips. In the summer months, the weather warms but doesn't get hot, which makes it ideal for food, music, dance, and theater festivals outdoors - though the chance of rain does increase. Fall encourages indoor activities, such as museums, covered botanical gardens, and Dutch apple pie in cozy cafes; if the rain lets up, though, enjoy the fierce fall colors of the De Jordaan canal trees or those in Vondelpark. Daylight may be short in winter, but the temperature stays relatively mild, which makes the Christmas markets, light festivals, ice skating, and other winter events inviting.

Top Experiences

Rijksmuseum : Centrally located, this is a national art museum with paintings, sketches and other mediums from artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.

De Jordaan : One of Amsterdam's most famous neighborhoods, which is lined with 17th century houses, cafes, and boutiques, but also the home of diarist Anne Frank. The canal is lined with trees and picturesque buildings.

Keukenhof : This garden is a showcase for bulb flowers, which the Dutch have been cultivating for centuries. Spring is probably the best season to visit, to see the tulips in blossom.

Zaanse Schans : This area, a quick drive or train ride from Amsterdam, could be called an outdoor museum. Full of transplanted barns, windmills and other buildings, it serves as a living monument to Dutch ingenuity and culture.

Alongside the ban, the city is hoping to limit hotel stays by tourists to fewer than 20 million a year, The New York Times noted. Prior to the pandemic, Amsterdam experienced 25.2 million hotel stays in 2019, according to city data cited by the newspaper. Last year, that number was even higher—not even including stays in Airbnbs or on cruise ships.

“The effect won’t be very big,” Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism in Rotterdam, told the Times . But “without such a stop, Amsterdam’s center would become one big hotel. . .You don’t want that either.”

Koens added that the limited supply may make hotels in the city more expensive in the future, which could in turn deter visitors. Right now, the city has 42,000 hotel rooms that can hold 92,000 people, according to Statistics Netherlands data cited by the newspaper. Twenty-six more hotels have already been approved to open, which will add to that total. But beyond that, new hotels will only be able to open if another property closes, and the newer hotel can’t have more rooms than were previously available.

That deals a blow to property developers who were hoping to cash in on Amsterdam’s tourism boom. But it’s not clear whether it will actually tamp down on the tourism itself.

Amsterdam blocks construction of new hotels to fight overtourism

Dutch officials are trying to limit the number of tourists flooding amsterdam.

In another attempt to crack down on overtourism, officials in Amsterdam are banning the construction of new hotels in the Dutch capital.

The policy, announced Wednesday, only permits new hotels in a one-in, one-out system; a new hotel can be built only if another closes. New hotels may not exceed the bed count of the previous hotels and must be “better,” per the city’s release, with more modern and sustainable features.

“Amsterdam says ‘no’ to new hotels,” reads a translated statement from city officials. “We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors.”

The effort follows initiatives in Amsterdam to limit the influx of tourists into the city, a destination known for its tolerant drug policies, sex industry and liberated party scene.

In Amsterdam, people are not prosecuted for buying up to 5 grams of cannabis, which can be purchased in coffee shops. For years, city officials have been trying to rein in hordes of “nuisance” tourists, or those who are attracted to the city by the promise of a night of debauchery.

In June 2023, the city council passed the “ tourism balance in Amsterdam ” policy, which set a maximum number of overnight stays and day visits in the city, capping the annual visitor count at 20 million people per year. Wednesday’s guidance re-ups that regulation; the number of hotel nights in 2023 was 20,665,000, according to the city.

“We are now taking more measures to ensure that the number of hotel nights does not increase even further,” the city’s statement read.

That same year, seeking to curb the rowdy crowds of the Red Light District and offer residents a better night’s sleep, the city cracked down on public pot smoking in the streets and limited the hours of operation for certain restaurants and sex establishments.

Amsterdam also launched a “ Stay Away ” campaign, directly targeting British men between the ages of 18 to 35. The demographic group frequents the city for “stag” or bachelor parties, which residents say are disruptive .

Also in 2023, city officials adopted a proposal to relocate a cruise ship terminal . In addition to addressing pollution concerns, the move sought to prevent crowds of tourists from flooding the city’s center upon docking.

It’s unclear how the city plans to enforce the new hotel construction policy; according to the release, new hotels already under construction may continue. That includes 26 hotels with existing permits.

Amsterdam’s Latest Effort to Fight Excessive Tourism: No New Hotels

The city wants no more than 20 million hotel stays annually. The measure is one of multiple efforts to control the flow of visitors.

A brick hotel with a neon sign and people on the sidewalk in front of it in Amsterdam.

By Claire Moses

Amsterdam has been searching for any way to rein in the number of tourists that visit the city every year.

In March of last year, the city launched an ad campaign specifically targeted at British men between 18 and 35, urging them to “stay away.”

In July, the Dutch capital announced it would bar cruise ships from docking in the city center .

The city has also long tried to control the crowds in its red-light district, where rowdy groups of tourists often cause disruptions to local residents. It has added stricter rules about smoking marijuana . It has banned new tourist shops. And still, the people keep coming.

Now, the city — which is as well known for its canals and 17th century art as for its legal sex industry and easy access to marijuana — has taken one more step to further restrict the explosive growth of tourists: It is banning hotels from being built.

“Amsterdam is saying ‘no’ to new hotels,” the City Council said in a statement. “We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors,” it added.

Amsterdam, which added that it was seeking to keep hotel stays by tourists to under 20 million per year, saw its highest number of visitors before the pandemic in 2019, when there were 25.2 million hotel stays, according to the city’s data.

Last year, that number was exceeded by tourists staying over in Amsterdam, not including stays in short-term rentals like Airbnbs and cruise ships. And the measure also does not take into account daily visitors who do not stay the night.

The ban on new hotels, while sending a clear message about the city’s aim to reduce the number of visitors, is also largely symbolic. The city’s policy on hotel construction was already strict, and there had been only three proposals since 2017 that met Amsterdam’s requirements, according to the city. New hotels that had been approved or were in development — 26 in total — would be allowed to proceed for now.

Under the new rules, a new hotel can only open if another one closes. It also isn’t allowed to add more rooms than were available, according to the city.

“The effect won’t be very big,” said Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism at Inholland University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He also said that in the long run, the capping of hotels could make them more expensive to stay at.

While this ban alone would not make a huge dent in the number of visitors to the city, Mr. Koens said, taken together with other initiatives it could make Amsterdam a less appealing place to visit. But, he said, “For now, visitors don’t seem to mind.”

In total, Amsterdam has nearly 42,000 hotel rooms that can accommodate more than 92,000 people, according to Statistics Netherlands, a governmental institution that compiles data about the country. (In total, the Netherlands has more than 150,000 hotel rooms.)

Amsterdam’s initiatives to rein in tourism have been largely focused on its crowded city center. But as long as Amsterdam’s airport, Schiphol, continues to be a major European hub, it won’t be easy to keep visitors away from the city.

“There are no simple solutions,” Mr. Koens said. “It’s super complex.”

Amsterdam also announced this week it would start cutting the number of river cruises allowed to dock in its waters. In 2023, that number was 2,125. In 2028, the city wants it to be halved, with no more than 1,150. The city predicts that effort could reduce the number of visitors that come into town by 271,000. This proposal, the city said, is to improve the quality of life for residents and to reduce emissions and crowds.

“The balance in the city needs to improve,” Hester van Buren, a deputy mayor who focuses on the city’s port, said in a statement.

Amsterdam isn’t the only major European destination that has been struggling to get a grip on the growing number of tourists. Venice announced it would charge day-tripping visitors 5 euros ($5.33) to enter the iconic streets of its city center on weekends and some holidays from April 25 through mid-July, its busiest season.

Amsterdam, currently in a busy touristic time because of its famous blooming tulips, has not announced a similar measure, but it is likely there will be more efforts and experiments designed to limit visitors — like the hotel ban.

“Without such a stop, Amsterdam’s center would become one big hotel,” Mr. Koens said. “You don’t want that either.”

Amsterdam Just Banned Nearly All New Hotels — What to Know

You may want to reserve your next hotel in Amsterdam early.

hotel travel amsterdam

Andrey Danilovich/Getty Images

The city of Amsterdam will ban nearly all new hotels and restrict the number of tourists who can stay overnight each year in its latest effort to combat overtourism.

Amsterdam will now prevent all new hotels from being built unless another closes elsewhere, according to an announcement by the city's government . The new hotel must also be more modern or sustainable, and the city is encouraging developers to choose locations outside the city.

The new rule will not apply to hotel projects that have already received permits.

In addition, Amsterdam will limit properties to 20 million overnight stays, which is 665,000 fewer overnight stays than the total number of hotel nights in 2023 (not including holiday rentals, bed and breakfasts, or cruises), according to the city's announcement.

"We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors," Amsterdam's local authority wrote. "This means: no overtourism, no new hotels, and no more than 20 million hotel nights by tourists per year."

This year, Amsterdam also increased its tourist tax to 12.5% . The tax applies to travelers staying both overnight or visiting on cruise ships.

Amsterdam is far from alone in trying to reduce the burden of overtourism. The city of Venice, Italy, is implementing a fee for day trippers and wants to limit the number of travelers allowed on tour groups . Similarly, Iceland plans to implement a tourist tax to support climate and sustainability goals, and Athens, Greece, tested a pilot program last summer limiting daily visitors to the famous Acropolis to 20,000 people. Outside of Europe, the Japanese city of Kyoto banned non-residents from some private alleys in its geisha district in an effort to combat overcrowding and misbehaving tourists. And in the United States, the governor of Hawaii recently proposed charging tourists a $25 fee when they arrive and check in to a hotel or short-term rental, with the revenue going toward beach preservation, fire breaks, and other prevention measures.

Tens of thousands of people watched as dozens of colorfully decorated boats toured the Dutch capital's historic canals Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, in the most popular event of a six-day Pride Amsterdam festival that attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the city.

Amsterdam's local government is cracking down on local over-tourism by putting a ban on new hotels, it said Wednesday .

New hotels can only be built if another closes down, and the city is urging developers to choose a site outside of the city center.

If a new hotel is built in place of an old one, it must be more modern or more sustainable. Twenty-six hotels that have already been issued permits will not be affected by the ban, the city said.

In Amsterdam, Even The Tourists Say There Are Too Many Tourists

In Amsterdam, even the tourists say there are too many tourists

The move was triggered by Amsterdam's "Tourism in balance" policy, which was created in 2021 after a public initiative in which 30,000 residents called for more control of the tourism industry.

Under "tourism in balance," aims to limit overnight stays in hotels by tourists to 20 million a year. In 2023 tourists spent about 20.7 million nights in Amsterdam, a number that doesn't include vacation rentals, bed and breakfast stays or cruise trips. That means "the municipal executive is obliged to take action," the city says.

Amsterdam also has been attempting to curb other behaviors by tourists, including banning cannabis smoking in certain parts of the city , closing some clubs and bars earlier, placing new limits on canal cruises and converting some hotels into homes or offices.

Episode Notes

Amsterdam is banning hotel developments as part of its strategy to fight mass tourism, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.

Amsterdam’s municipal government announced the Dutch capital will no longer issue permits for new hotels. The only exception would be if another hotel in the city closes and the number of beds doesn’t increase. Habtemariam notes Amsterdam officials are looking to limit annual overnight stays in the city to 20 million.

The new hotel restriction is Amsterdam’s latest attempt to discourage mass tourism. The city raised its tourist tax 5 percentage points earlier this year.

Next, Hyatt is ramping up its efforts to attract Indian leisure travelers , writes India Reporter Bulbul Dhawan.

Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian said India’s leisure travel market is mainly driven by domestic travelers, and that the company is looking to open 50 more hotels across 28 markets in India. The company currently operates 50 hotels in 17 Indian markets. Hoplamazian added he’s seen more interest in investments in India’s hospitality industry.

Finally, Apple is putting wireless streaming technology in hotel rooms for the first time as part of its partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes.

Apple’s Airplay technology is now available in rooms at more than 60 IHG properties throughout North America. Airplay enables guests to stream content from their iPhone or iPad to the LG television in their hotel rooms. An IHG executive said the company is looking to create a “home-away-from-home” experience that many guests crave.
