Did you attend the one-off special live concert of I Am Kloot and an Orchestra playing our Mercury nominated album Sky At Night?

On Monday 13th of June at the Royal Festival Hall we played our album Sky At Night live at Guy Garvey’s Meltdown Festival. We played the album in order and had an orchestral ensemble arranged by our friend Chris Worsey. The ensemble played all the string, brass and harp parts on the album. The players are called The Millennia Ensemble / Orchestra. A lot of the players at the gig were the same people that recorded on the album. We rehearsed all together the day before the gig for the first time. Maybe it was something to do with the fact we’d never played with an orchestra before, maybe it was the relaxed nature of everyone involved, maybe it was because we had not seen each other in months, maybe it was the quality of the players and the songs, maybe it was the room and the fact all our friends and loved ones were there, it was certainly something to do with the good will and enthusiasm of the audience. Whatever it was I think we played the best gig we have ever played.

So not wanting to jinx anything we didn’t arrange for the gig to be recorded in a high fidelity format. We wanted to just to enjoy the show. But at the last minute I gave Richard Knowles our FOH engineer / Tour Manager and Keeper my edirol recorder and Rich captured the gig. I set my recorder to MP3 so as to have enough disk space to record the whole show. Anyway the bottom end rolls a little and the top end sizzles a little but this is I think you’ll agree when applied to many activities is not such a bad thing.

So here is the recording of maybe the best gig we have ever played.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did X

have a good summer X

see you soon x

About I Am Kloot

i am kloot tour

As the singer-songwriter in I Am Kloot from 1999 to 2014, John Bramwell achieved a Mercury Prize nomination for 2010’s The Sky At Night, a Top 10 chart position for 2013’s Let It All In, numerous UK and European tours and a triumphant farewell at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with an orchestra in 2014.

Now, as a solo artist, he’s travelling a very different path, his stunning new album The Light Fantastic is almost a complete U-turn from his Kloot-days. Darker clouds have been banished, there are now strings and four-part harmonies and a dozen gloriously exhilarating, beautifully crafted observed songs about life, humanity, the universe and everything else.

I Am Kloot’s John Bramwell announces new album The Light Fantastic out 23rd February plus tour dates!

John Bramwell

Over the last decade we’ve had a plethora of solo singer songwriters come and go and it’s turning into an individual art form which is a hard nut to crack. John Bramwell just keeps on going like the trooper he’s always been, still coming up with amazing songs that have been lauded by other songwriting greats across Britain. He’s very welcome back with a new album and an intimate tour which is already starting to sell out for the right reasons. Read on…

John Bramwell Announces  The Light Fantastic New Album Released February 23rd 2024 Announces 5 Intimate Shows Including Three Shows At London’s St Pancras Old Church

One of the country’s most underrated singer-songwriters, John Bramwell, returns to the fray with a remarkable new album The Light Fantastic, out February 23rd via Townsend Music.

Anyone who has heard John’s work with seminal Manchester band I Am Kloot, will be cheered by the news of this impending release. Nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2010 for their acclaimed Sky At Night album, I Am Kloot never quite received the widespread success their music deserved.

This new album is a masterclass in emotionally charged and melodically driven tunes for the adventurous. All 12 tracks were written by John except for ‘Nobody Left But You’ which he co-wrote with album producer Dave Fidler.

“After both my Mum and Dad died, I started writing these songs to cheer myself up,” John admits with typical candour. “The themes are taken from my dreams at the time. Wake up and take whatever impression I had from what I could remember of my dream and write that.”

Despite the sentiment, the songs are surprisingly uplifting. And will no doubt sound great live.

Kicking off with three dates at London’s St Pancras Old Church in February, John Bramwell will play the following shows next year. Tickets are on sale now.

Taking inspiration from Alan Pakula’s film “Klute”, rock trio I Am Kloot hailing from Manchester, UK formed in 1999 with John Bramwell on vocals and guitar, Peter Jobson on bass and Andy Hargreaves on drums.

Rising from the ashes of Bramwell’s former band The Mouth, the band made their debut with the double A side single “Titantic/To You” in late 1999 via Ugly Man Records. A stark approach to promoting the single saw the band paste lyrics to the tracks in blood red ink all over Manchester city centre, a tactic which caught the attention of local press.

In 2001, the band got friend and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey on board to produce their debut album “Natural History” recorded in a church on the Isle of Mull. Labelled by NME as being the cornerstones of the New Acoustic Movement, the album received favourable reviews from critics. Part way through promoting the record, their label went bust which then ceased manufacture on the album leaving the band in a state of limbo.

Two years later after dealing with contractual issues, I Am Kloot signed with The Echo Label to release their self-titled album with Chris Potter. Initially the band had planned to release the single “Proof” along with a promo video featuring British actor Christopher Eccleston, but soon the idea was thwarted as the single didn’t receive a commercial release and instead the video featured on the band’s website.

In 2005 the band released their third album “Gods and Monsters” featuring the singles “Over My Shoulder” and “I Believe”. Never one for luck with labels, I Am Kloot found themselves in a pickle as financial trouble struck The Echo Label as they began dropping artists off their roster. Jumping ship before they fell victim, I Am Kloot later that year released the single “Maybe I Should” through their own label Skinny Dog Records before embarking on a full UK tour which culminated in the band playing the renowned Astoria in London, their biggest headline show.

Without a label behind them, the band began working on their fourth album. Wanting to capture the essence of a live performance, I Am Kloot recorded live at Moolah Rouge Studios and went on to commercially release the album “I Am Kloot Play Moolah Rouge” in 2008. The track “Avenue of Hope” featured on the soundtrack of Danny Boyle’s 2008 film “Sunshine”.

In 2010, I am Kloot released their fifth eponymous album “Sky At Night” with Guy Garvey on board with production. Reaching number 24 in the UK album charts, the band were also recognised by being nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize Award. Granting The Guardian exclusivity on streaming on their sixth album “Let It All In” in 2013, saw the band diversify their sound while anchoring their signature morose themes presented in a way only I Am Kloot can.

Live reviews

While "I Am Kloot" may have a rather different name, their sound is at once familiar, accessible, and infectious.

Fronted by John Bramwell's unique, warbling vocals, I Am Kloot is a wonderful band to experience live. On stage, under the haze of fog and the bright, colorful stage lights, John is a sight to behold with his wavy long hair glowing under the lights and his guitar sparkling.

I Am Kloot's performance of "Hold Back the Night" is full of soul and raw emotion in its simple approach to musicianship and accompaniment. The audience is holding their breath in between phrases of the lyrics John passionately spits out to the accompaniment of bandmates Peter Jobsen and Andy Hargreaves. Bathed in blue, they sway and bend in time with the music, and at the end of I Am Kloot's performance of "Hold Back The Night," the audience erupts with furious applause.

The simple, calm nature of I Am Kloot is at first a little odd to see on the big stage. However, once one realizes that this calm is in fact the focus of each member's talent and passion into their instrument or microphone, the band immediately becomes more mesmerizing as they perform perfectly in sync.

Fantastic, wonderful mix of old and current tracks played as always by such underrated talented musicians! I am kloot are such a special band and you always feel so blessed to be part of their intimate London shows. I have been to all of IAK's main London shows since 2001 and they never give anything other than a fantastic show!

Great gig, on election night.

They were really tight and played quite a few less known tracks.

Really wonderful live band with great songs and good banter. A bit of Manchester vs London joking too.

Reinventing Himself On The Road: John Bramwell Live @ Union Chapel

After many years as frontman of Manchester-based band I Am Kloot , in 2013 John Bramwell took a change of direction and set out on a “Never-ending” solo tour that charted a course that has criss-crossed this country and into the continent. It’s a journey that has wended its way though clubs and pubs, churches and village halls giving plenty of time for musing on life and love, hope and heartbreak, desire and despair en route. Returning to Union Chapel in London tonight, John is promoting his first full solo album Leave Alone The Empty Spaces , self-released in November 2017, with this latest series of intimate gigs.

 (Edyta K)

The opening set for the evening is from Dave Fidler . Country and blues influences from Bob Dylan to an homage to Tommy Emmanuel run through his music. Often drawing upon personal stories, Dave ‘s excellent and highly relatable song-writing skills shine out. Easy Gone, Easy Come penned for the birth of his son  – “will we live / to see your children” – is particularly poignant. Taking Over is a self-assured display of intricate finger style and slide guitar playing.

Younger brother Andy adds cajon and vocal harmonies for parts of the set and Dave also performs one of Andy’s songs. It’s not hard to see why John picked out Dave to become his stalwart companion for the majority of this never-ending tour. So to many here Dave Fidler needs no introduction and the rest are quickly won over by his easy charm and the sheer quality of his musicianship.

 (Edyta K)

During the break between sets a friendly hubbub rises up among those who’ve made the pilgrimage to Union Chapel on a chilly November evening in anticipation of the appearance of the main man of the night. John Bramwell has long been recognised as a lyrical genius. In 1989 under the pseudonym Johnny Dangerously he released You, Me and the Alarm Clock , an acoustic mini-LP that was championed by John Peel and featured in The Guardian ‘s 2006 list of “the greatest albums you’ve never heard”.

Ten years later he was the driving force behind the three-piece band I Am Kloot , who became renowned for their slightly twisted love songs and thrilling live performances.  I Am Kloot  were hampered by some unsuccessful label pairings, but their highest acclaim was reached with a Mercury Prize nomination in 2010. The trio was quietly shelved in 2016 so that John could focus on his solo output.

 (Edyta K)

The lights dim as four musicians, including Dave and Andy Fidler, strike up an instrumental theme before John enters the stage, pint glass raised in salutation. Together they launch into a beautifully nuanced Leave Alone The Empty Spaces , the title song from the new solo album. Then, left alone on stage, John continues with a clever blend of older Kloot classics, reworked for an acoustic setting, alongside his new songs.

 (Edyta K)

It’s a splendid way to showcase these latest works, drawn from his reflections and experiences on the road. Travel and transience are prominent themes. Trains may run late and tax demands loom within the departures and arrivals of the melancholy Meet Me At The Station .

Pausing to ponder on keeping hold of treasured memories Time’s Arrow asks “Does it matter that a daydream’s broken from its tethers while you sleep?” . Although the songs appear outwardly simple and sparse, wonderful imagery such as this elevates John ‘s words above the everyday into the magical. Along with his distinctive vocals and superb guitar playing it’s a combination that has the audience entranced.

 (Edyta K)

Following this selection of slow, intense numbers the tempo gears up a notch as John covers some more lively I Am Kloot tracks. In Fingerprints he reveals a heart-felt songwriter’s lament “I guess that I’ve been singing all my life, well that’s right, and that is fine”. A tender rendition of No Fear of Falling sounds stunning within the warm acoustics of the chapel walls and the reverb enhances the darkly dramatic romp of Bullets .

Having contributed keyboards on a number of these songs Alan Lowles plays the lilting accordion lines for To The Brink , where John says audience participation in a drunken and out-of-tune fashion would be highly appropriate. Then The Moon Is A Blind Eye brings an atmospheric close to this section with John’s plaintive voice rising over delicate piano notes.

 (Edyta K)

At various points through the evening John declares that he’s pleased to be back at this special location and he’s “going to enjoy every minute of it” and it’s clear that he is. As are the crowd even, or especially, when they’re being playfully teased or cajoled by John for which he receives some good-natured heckling and laughter in return. Moments of slight chaos over fumbled guitar changes and set list blunders are also played on.

Acting at times as a joker and lovable rascal, his wry quips and self-deprecating asides have become a traditional part of the entertainment. With it comes a sense of the genuine affection that extends between the audience and the artist which is a testament to John’s ability to connect with people.

 (Edyta K)

The last third of the set concentrates on the most current of John ‘s songs. The initial four musicians are back on stage with John – Alan Lowles (keyboard), Dave Fidler (guitar & bass, vocals), Andy Fidler (cajon, vocals), Adrian Gautrey (pedal steel & synth) – signalling another change of pace. The strongly rhythmic Who Is Anybody? is a great introduction to the more upbeat tunes. John comments that “These songs are in a major key and, frankly, it’s doing things with my mind!” producing another round of laughter.

Further questions about identity arise in the unreleased Working My Mind Off – “I’m gonna fake it until the people don’t appear at my door. What am I for?” . These songs have been road-tested in various formats over the past year or so, but tonight’s tight ensemble really hits the mark. It helps that all of them contributed to tracks on John’s new album.

 (Edyta K)

There’s a brief reversion as John and Alan perform the hauntingly pensive ballad Sat Beneath The Lightning Tree before the others rejoin to deliver the finale of two more as yet unreleased numbers, Get Away From This and World Full Of Flowers , full of fine harmonies and enchanting melodies. From slow-burning start through to uplifting finish this concert has been a journey underlining John’s undeniable talent and the appreciation from the audience is obvious.

 (Edyta K)

John Bramwell has reinvented himself from the headier days of “drinking and disaster” with I Am Kloot to a more contemplative, but still powerful, solo sound. It’s a treat to experience the Kloot tracks in a stripped back form that allows the lyrics to stand out. And the new songs display an added maturity, but retain an edge that proves that John has still got it when it comes to translating even the most elusive feelings into words. The deep romanticism and poetry of his lyrics are ever present in his work.

 (Edyta K)

It seems that this new phase for John has reawoken his creativity and fuelled his desire to take to the road to share his brilliant music and delight audiences far and wide. But who is John Bramwell ? Catch him on tour to find out more.

I Am Kloot's John Bramwell releases new single 'A World Full Of Flowers'

Kip Wright

One of the country's most underrated singer-songwriters, John Bramwell, announces the first single, 'A World Full Of Flowers', from his remarkable new album. The fantastic light available February 23rd via Townsend Music.

'A World Full Of Flowers' moves away from the darker sound it is synonymous with, I Am Kloot. With its upbeat feel and almost Beatles-esque feel, the track is filled with lush melodic vocal harmonies over a Beck-sounding syncopated drum loop, atmospheric Fleet Foxes soundscapes, and handclaps. It's a welcome return and one that offers a glimpse of John's new material, which, as he says, “They are the most uplifting songs of my career.”

Anyone who has heard John’s work with seminal Manchester band I Am Kloot will be cheered by the news of this impending release. Nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2010 for their acclaimed Sky At Night album, I Am Kloot never quite received the widespread success their music deserved.

This new album is a masterclass in emotionally charged and melodically driven tunes for the adventurous. John wrote all 12 tracks except for ‘Nobody Left But You’, which he co-wrote with album producer Dave Fidler.
