“We are so grateful that we had the opportunity to make music with such a talented and generous artist for two decades”: Incubus announce formal departure of bassist Ben Kenney – and unveil his official replacement

The band will play Morning View in its entirety across 10 dates in August and September, and will do so with the support of a new bass player

Ben Kenney

Incubus have announced that Ben Kenney will be stepping down as the band’s bassist, and that he will be officially replaced by current live player, Nicole Row.

Row – who has performed with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa and Panic! at the Disco – has been promoted to the official bass player post after first joining the band for a string of dates last year .

Kenney, who joined in 2003 and spent 20 years in the alt-rock outfit, stepped down from the band early last year to recover from brain surgery . Accomplished bass player Tal Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck, Prince, Steve Lukather) had stepped in on a short-term basis , before Row took her spot.

The announcement of Row's appointment comes with news of a forthcoming nine-State, 10-date tour, for which Incubus has also tapped progressive rock adventurers Coheed and Cambria. During the run, Incubus will be performing their career-defining fourth record, Morning View , across all dates.

Row spent much of 2023 on tour with the band and, as vocalist Brandon Boyd enthused, quickly proved herself “indispensable”. He’s also confirmed she is contributing bass to Morning View XXII , a re-recording of the classic album.

Said Boyd in a statement posted to social media: “Our friend and bass player of over 20 years, Ben Kenney, has decided to step away from Incubus. We are saddened at his departure but honor his decision and we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to make music with such a talented and generous artist for two decades.”

As for Row's promotion, Boyd went on, “What started as a suggestion from Ben Kenney himself for someone to step in during his absence has become a fast friendship and creative kinship. She spent most of 2023 on tour with us and has quickly proven herself indispensable.

“We love her and her delightful presence, and it’s a real dollop of icing on the proverbial cake that she is a monster of a musician. We are thrilled for you to hear her contributions to Morning View XXII and witness her energy on stage.”

Announcing the tour on her Instagram account, Row called the run of shows, “My childhood reimagined and come to life," adding: “Can’t wait to bring you all this nostalgic heavyweight! Cheers to Alex [Katunich, Morning View bassist] and Ben, I’ll be channeling you both.”

Speaking on the Elmo Lovano podcast , Row opened up on how she had missed Boyd's first Instagram message regarding the bass-playing spot in the band.

“This is all happening as I'm walking out of my final show with Panic, hopping onto a plane, and going home,” she said. “I hadn't slept, I'm changing time zones and I was very confused like 'Can we chat about this tomorrow?'”

The tour announcement follows the news the band was re-recording the album, to be released as Morning View XXII, on May 10. Double Platinum selling Morning View was released in October 2001 and spent 60 weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at the second to top spot.

“Roughly 23 years ago we rented a house at the sea to do an art experiment,” Boyd expanded in a press statement. “The novel and expansive environment combined with a healthy dose of momentum helped us find that ever sought-after flow state and the songs that became known as Morning View have since become indelible and deeply important parts of our lives.”

“This album helped propel our little art experiment called Incubus into a way of life and here we are today, some 23 years later, about to introduce the next phase of its existence,” he continued. “ Morning View XXII is a re-recording/re-think of the 2001 album and is the result of our desire to honor this burgeoning legacy, but also reimagine it as musicians who have been lovingly performing these songs night after night for the last 23 years.”

Tickets for the upcoming tour will be available via Citi pre-sale, on February 6. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on-sale beginning February 9 at 10 am local time.

Nicole Row Fills in For Ben Kenney on Incubus 2023 Tour

As Kenney recovers from a brain tumor, Row is filling in for their upcoming concert dates

incubus tour bassist

Longtime Incubus bassist Ben Kenney has announced that he is recovering from surgery that successfully removed a brain tumor following the band’s last tour. As he takes time off to heal, it was revealed that Nicole Row (Panic! At The Disco) will be filling in for him for the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Incubus will return to the road this summer for a 29-date US tour. It kicks off on July 21st in Eugene, Oregon. Joining Incubus on the road will be Badflower and Paris Jackson. Following the summer jaunt, Incubus will play an October 6th headlining gig at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with Action Bronson and Paris Jackson.

On the band’s previous tour they welcomed Tal Wilkenfeld to take on the bass duties for a series of shows in the US. Row has just completed the final tour with Panic! At The Disco, which concluded in early 2023.

Incubus moving forward with new bassist nicole row: “she’s definitely part of the band now”.

Sick New World Music Festival

Incubus will be moving forward with new member Nicole Row on bass.

Row, who previously played with Panic! at the Disco , joined the “Drive” rockers in 2023 in place of longtime bassist Ben Kenney , who’s been absent from the band since undergoing surgery for a brain tumor diagnosed in 2022.

“She’s definitely part of the band now,” frontman Brandon Boyd tells  Rolling Stone of Row. “Her very first project with us was obviously going on tour, and she swooped in and was this delightful breath of fresh air, which we’re so thankful for [for] so many reasons.”

“It’s always sad when somebody from a creative family decides to step away, but she brought a whole new universe into our band, which has been amazing,” Boyd adds. “Part of that momentum we’re feeling in writing a new record is partly her fault.”

As for Kenney, Boyd shares that he’s “recovered” while adding that the situation is “complicated.”

“It’s complicated from an interpersonal point of view, but he himself decided to step away,” Boyd says. “I think that the situation — as it would probably for anyone — gave rise to a bunch of questions about what he was doing in his life and the direction he was heading.”

“From what I’m able to discern, [Kenney] decided it was time for him to step away and do other things,” Boyd continues. “So god bless. We were sad at the revelation, but we love him deeply and we respect him and honor his contribution to our band for over 20 years.”

Incubus will launch a U.S. arena tour in the summer, during which they’ll be playing their 2001 album,  Morning View, in full. They’re also releasing a rerecorded version of Morning View on May 10.

Incubus announce Nicole Row as their full-time bassist

Incubus  have officially announced bassist Nicole Row as a full-time band member. Row was first brought to the fold as a sub after their previous bassist Ben Kenney got time off band duties due to a surgery for a brain tumor. Kenney has now recovered from that illness, but will not be returning to the band.

Frontman Brandon Boyd has recently spoken about Row in an interview with  Rolling Stone , saying:

She’s definitely part of the band now. Her very first project with us was obviously going on tour, and she swooped in and was this delightful breath of fresh air, which we’re so thankful for so many reasons. It’s always sad when somebody from a creative family decides to step away, but she brought a whole new universe into our band, which has been amazing. Part of that momentum we’re feeling in writing a new record is partly her fault.

He then spoke of Kenney:

He has recovered. It’s complicated. I’ll just preface what I’m about to say with that. It’s complicated from an interpersonal point of view, but he himself decided to step away. I think that the situation — as it would probably for anyone — gave rise to a bunch of questions about what he was doing in his life and the direction he was heading. And from what I’m able to discern, he decided it was time for him to step away and do other things. So god bless. We were sad at the revelation, but we love him deeply and we respect him and honor his contribution to our band for over 20 years. I want Ben to have the chance to answer these questions in his own timeframe and in his own voice, because I don’t really think it’s for me to say what his reasoning was. window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22488574520/Chaoszine_Desktop_Article_Within_3', [[980, 120], [728, 90], [980, 400]], 'gpt-desktop-inside-article-3').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display('gpt-desktop-inside-article-3'); });

Boyd also addressed the re-recording of their fourth studio album, “Morning View“, a process for which Row contributed. When asked if  Taylor Swift ‘s move to re-record her own music so she can own the rights to the new recordings weighed into the situation, he said:

It was definitely part of the discussion. Through time, we won our re-record rights back, and it’s not unimportant to the process. To me, it’s sort of a less interesting part of the process, but still a part of it. When you’re involved in the making of music, especially when it’s exotic recording contracts from the Nineties, you pour your soul out and give everything you have into these recordings, and then ultimately you don’t own them. And there’s something not unusual about that, but it’s also sad. So we’ve been around long enough now. We got to that point after all the decades where we’ve started to get our re-record rights back. We’ll never own the masters to the original recordings, but in the contracts it basically says that should we choose to re-record the album, we then own those master recordings. So it just gives a little bit more license and ownership to these tracks. But like I said, it’s not the most important thing.

Incubus ’s re-recorded version of “Morning View“, “Morning View XXIII“, will be out on May 10. They’ll also be performing the album in its entirety live on the road this summer on tour with  Coheed And Cambria .

Incubus Revisit Their Past With ‘Morning View XXIII’ — and the Future Looks Bright

By Angie Martoccio

Angie Martoccio

When Brandon Boyd thinks back on the spring of 2001, he’s amazed he wasn’t more stressed out. His band, Incubus , had just broken through with 1999’s Make Yourself , and their hit “Drive” was climbing the charts. “In retrospect, we probably should have felt more pressure to make a great follow-up record because we have this hit single right now,” Boyd, 47, tells Rolling Stone . “That didn’t even enter our minds. We were just like, ‘This is crazy! A lot of people are listening to our songs right now. Let’s make another one!’ So we decided to rent this house and get out of a traditional studio setting.”

The result was Morning View , released on Oct. 23, 2001. Named after the street of the Malibu home where they recorded it, it’s perhaps one of the most delightfully chill rock albums of the early 2000s, featuring beloved gems like “Wish You Were Here,” “Are You In?” and “Just a Phase.” The album went double-platinum, landing at Number Two on the Billboard 200.

In addition to the tour, Incubus will release Morning View XXIII , a re-recording of the album out May 24. Boyd talked to us about the album, the upcoming tour, their new bassist, Nicole Row, and bringing Lizzo onstage at the Hollywood Bowl.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Sometimes re-recording an album means relearning old songs that haven’t been touched in a long time. But you guys have been actively playing these songs live for years — except for maybe, like, “Blood on the Ground.” Honestly, it was both amazingly enjoyable and surprisingly challenging. It is one thing to perform a song live amongst 20 other songs in a set or perform a handful of songs from a record. Say you hit a bad note here and there, you have a dozen more chances throughout the night to get it right. Our philosophy in playing live [is that] we’re not trying to be perfect, we’re trying to capture an energy.

Lizzo Clarifies She's Not Quitting Music, Just 'Negative Energy'

Lizzo says she's tired of 'being dragged' by everyone: 'i quit', lizzo claims 'nobody asked' her to be in jennifer lopez's film.

I’m sure it was easier to re-record “Mexico” now than, like, “Are You In?” Yeah. 20-plus years of touring definitely has a tendency to chip away at the instrument. When it’s working well, I’ve noticed that my instrument is wider and more broad than it was when I was younger. I also had a procedure done in December 2019 where I had my septum repaired.

Let me start over: I broke my nose twice. Once on stage at the Whisky a Go Go when I was 17. Our former bass player, Alex [Katunich], his bass sort of collided with my face. I didn’t do anything, I just let it heal randomly. And before that, when I was in seventh grade, I caught an egg in the face on Halloween. I basically learned to sing on one nostril, and I’ve been breathing through one nostril for most of my life. But it started to get progressively worse as I’m aging. And I went to see an ear, nose, and throat doctor, and he looked in there and goes, “Your face is fucked up. Will you please let me fix your septum?” And I only bring that up because I’ve noticed that since it healed, I have my range from my twenties and thirties back again.

I’m glad you can breathe through both nostrils now. Lovely. I recommend it.

That being said, we did our very best to honor the songs in as many ways possible, but we did embellish here and there, and the embellishments that we made were things that have evolved out of live performances of the songs. So the versions that are on Morning View XXIII are very true to the originals, but it’s almost as if we did real recordings of the versions that we’ve been playing live of them.

Taylor Swift has really popularized re-recording so she can own her music. How much of that was a factor in this decision?

When you feel like the wind is at your back, it’s a feeling that is palpable. I’m speaking now as a person who’s in his late forties, and once you have a taste of that, it’s a lovely, lovely thing. And we’re taking this kind of psychic momentum into our songwriting process now, where we’re writing a new record. We go into the studio and there’s a new song idea every single day. It’s a fun, infectious feeling.

Were there any challenges that you faced during the re-recording? Did you look at any of the songs and say, “This hasn’t aged well?” [ Laughs. ] I have to say that there definitely weren’t problems in that regard. Beyond that, the challenges were kind of beautiful. We were working with Nicole Row, who’s playing bass with us now.

I was going to say, Morning View was the last Incubus album with Alex. How did Nicole approach his parts? It was so much fun watching her perform them, honor the original recordings, but also put her own stamp on them. She’s an incredible musician. She’s just effortless on a guitar. Watching her take on this challenge was really wonderful. I think people are really going to like her on this album, but also witnessing her become part of this band family.

I know Nicole took over Ben Kenney’s parts on tour after he got sick . But is she an official member of the band? Yeah, she’s definitely part of the band now.

The original video for “Wish You Were Here” featured the band running from screaming fans and jumping off a bridge à la the Monkees in Head. MTV banned it because of the September 11th attacks, but hardcore fans were able to see it on the Morning View Sessions DVD. Will you release it alongside the re-recording? It didn’t occur to me, but I think that’s a fantastic idea. The only problem is we probably don’t own the rights to it. It’s owned by Sony. It’s so funny that it got banned. It’s just so stupid. It’s like, what’s wrong with this? It was just us jumping off the bridge. I think it came out overseas, so it’s out there, but it’s hard to find. Which is sort of fun, especially in the age of the internet.

We spent all our money on it. But I remember when we got the message from our record label that MTV wasn’t going to play it because of September 11th and they perceived it as being insensitive. We were gutted. Then they were like, “You have about 24 hours to call it something else.” I think it was either 24 or 36 hours, but for the sake of drama, let’s call it 24.

We fortunately had done a day of performance footage, which is all that slo-mo footage of us in that white room with the fans and blowing our hair and all that shit. Then I had a camcorder on me all the time at the Morning View house, so we had all this footage. I was like, “I’m going to make a home movie music video mixed with this performance footage.” And I actually edited the video. Forget that I had never edited a video before. It didn’t matter. So we turned a potential disaster into something usable.

With the early-2000s rock revival, Incubus has gained a lot of younger fans. Is that something you’ve noticed? I don’t think about it very often, but it does occur to me that there are new generations of people discovering our music. From what I am able to observe at our shows, looking out at the audience, it’s a confusing swath of humanity. It’s not one particular age group or demographic. It feels like it’s a little bit of everybody. I love that people of all sorts, ages, skin colors, creeds, planets, whatever, come to our concerts. I think it’s so cool. But I have been noticing younger people over the past two years in particular since we started touring again after Covid, and I am getting the sense that it’s parents who grew up coming to our shows. Now they’re bringing their kids.

I remember I got really into Led Zeppelin when I was between 13 and 15, and that would’ve been in the late Eighties, early Nineties. Those records had only come out 10 or 15 years before that, but it seemed so old and vintage and rad to me in this way I can’t really describe. So these people coming to the shows with their kids, our albums are older than those Zeppelin records were [when I was] growing up. That throws things into perspective, in a really wild way.

Additionally, Incubus bassist Ben Kenney has exited the band after two decades. He will be replaced by Nicole Row , who now steps into the role permanently after spending most of 2023 filling in on bass for the band's live appearances.

Vocalist Brandon Boyd share the following speaking of the recent member change:

We are saddened at his departure but honor his decision and we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to make music with such a talented and generous artist for two decades. I'm sure it's inevitable that everyone will have questions as to the details surrounding his departure and that is fair, but in honoring our long friendship with Ben, it feels appropriate to allow for him to answer those queries in a time frame he himself feels comfortable with. We wish him only the best of fortunes and we tip our hat to Ben, one of the greats.

ABOUT INCUBUS

As a sonic and spiritual enigma, Incubus continue to stretch, shape, and shake the foundation of alternative music, embracing endless possibilities and eclipsing any and all boundaries in the process. The multiplatinum Los Angeles band—Brandon Boyd [vocals], Mike Einziger [guitar, piano, backing vocals], José Pasillas II [drums], Chris Kilmore [turntables, keyboards], and Nicole Row [bass]—tune into the creative exchange between them and beam it back to audiences as loudly (and lovingly) as possible. To date, the quintet have notably sold over 23 million albums, scored dozens of multi-platinum and platinum certifications around the globe, gathered billions of streams, and notched six consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard 200. At the same time, they have graced the bills of festivals such as BottleRock, Ohana, Lollapalooza, and Rock In Rio in addition to headlining arenas and amphitheaters worldwide. During 2021, the musicians celebrated the 20th anniversary of their seminal double-platinum third full-length offering, Morning View, with a worldwide livestream. Incubus returned to the house where they famously recorded the album and performed the entire tracklisting from front-to-back for the first time. It incited a rapturous fan response, and the band decided to do it again in October 2023. The group sold out the legendary Hollywood Bowl and performed Morning View in front of a hometown audience, unassumingly kickstarting another era. Between launching a massive US Morning View arena tour in 2024, they ignite the next phase of Incubus with Morning View XXIII and more new music on the horizon. So, are you in?

Tal Wilkenfeld joins Incubus while bassist Ben Kenney recovers after brain op

The former Jeff Beck bassist joins Brandon Boyd and co for her first shows this coming weekend, with Kenney promising he’ll be “there in spirit”

Tal Wilkenfeld and Ben Kenney

Aussie bass guitar phenom Tal Wilkenfeld has joined Incubus while long-serving bassist Ben Kenney takes some time out to recuperate following brain surgery.

The Californian rockers confirmed the move on Instagram yesterday (26 January), and wished Kenney a speedy recovery.

“To our beloved fans in Costa Rica, Texas and Louisiana: Our Incubus brother and bandmate, Ben Kenney, is currently recovering from a recent medical procedure and will be unable to perform with us on our upcoming run at the end of the month,” wrote the band in a statement. “In his absence, our good friend, Tal Wilkenfeld, will be filling in for him on bass and we look forward to performing with her on these shows!  We wish Ben a speedy recovery and cant wait for him to rejoin us onstage soon! Much love <3.”

A post shared by Tal Wilkenfeld (@talmeastory) A photo posted by on

Ben Kenney was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and underwent successful surgery to have it removed. He posted a picture of the scar on Instagram, and said he was taking some time away from the stage and social media to recover.

“I won’t physically be at the shows but I will be there in spirit,” he wrote. “I miss you all and I hope you and your loved ones are safe and in good health.”

Wilkenfeld has played with a who’s who of musical talent that includes Prince , Herbie Hancock , the Allman Brothers Band, and most famously with the late Jeff Beck .

Some players might be intimidated about being drafted in for a tour at relatively short notice, with shows coming hot on the heels of the announcement at The Picnic Festival in Costa Rica on Saturday 28 January, followed by a string of dates in Texas and New Orleans from 31 January. But Wilkenfeld’s the sort of player you just throw an instrument to and call the tune.

Speaking to MusicRadar in 2020 , she said she never bothered with a metronome to keep time with; she just played along to records, and with other people, and advises us to do the same.

“If the aim is to have your own sense of time and feel, if you’re relying on a metronome it could become a crutch,” Wilkenfeld said. “It’s always better to practice with humans – either on a record or other humans you actually know!”

But speaking of preparation, or the lack of it, Wilkenfeld’s audition for Jeff Beck ’s band was legendary. Having made the crucial mistake of having barbecued chicken pizza before flying out with his band for the audition, Wilkenfeld started feeling something off during the flight.

As she told MusicRadar , drummer Vinnie Colaiuta was fulminating about something as she was turning green.

Tal Wilkenfeld

“I remember saying to him, ‘Hey, Vinnie, I’m feeling a little sick,’ or something, and I remember him saying, ‘Oh, really? That’s a shame...’ and he went back into his political rant,” Wilkenfeld recalled. “About two minutes later I held up a filled-up bag and I said, ‘There it is.’ I’d thrown up into this bag without him even noticing because he was raving on about politics.

“The 10-hour journey was me, sick, to the point that when we landed I almost fell down the stairs of the aeroplane onto my hands and knees. Then got straight into an ambulance, went to the hospital, got put on a drip and they ended up leaving me in the hospital overnight.”

The next morning was little better but Beck’s manager called her and asked if she was ready. A car picked her up. After a four-hour drive she arrived at the house, half-dead, but with Beck raring to go. That’s when she knew the collaboration was going to work.

“When I arrived I thought we were going to hang out, relax, chill,” she said. “But as soon as we got there Jeff’s like, ‘You ready to play?’ So we went upstairs and rattled off his entire set in probably an hour and the chemistry between us was so amazing. But it was so funny that I was barely walking.”

Tal Wilkenfeld to Fill in For Upcoming Incubus Tour Dates

Kevin Johnson

Incubus has announced that their next few shows will have a different bass player, although many fans of the low end will recognize them. In a post on their Twitter account, the band wrote that Tal Wilkenfeld will be filling in for the mighty Ben Kenney in Costa Rica, Texas, and Louisiana.

“Our Incubus brother and bandmate, Ben Kenney, is currently recovering from a recent medical procedure and will be unable to perform with us on our upcoming run at the end of the month,” they wrote. “In his absence, our good friend, Tal Wilkenfeld, will be filling in for him on bass, and we look forward to performing with her on these shows! We wish Ben a speedy recovery and can’t wait for him to rejoin us onstage soon!”

Wilkenfeld, who has called herself an Incubus super fan, will be with the band on January 28th in Costa Rica for the Picnic Festival, January 31st and February 2nd in Texas, and February 4th in New Orleans. If you’re unfamiliar with her work, her resumé is like a who’s who of rock, blues and jazz: Jeff Beck, Prince, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, and many more.

We’re also wishing a speedy recovery to Ben Kenney!
