Guide to the New Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Port

Posted on Published: 03/26/2024

If you want to take a Caribbean or Bahamian cruise, Florida is one of the best states to cruise from. There are several different cruise ports throughout the state, with many options for cruise ships and cruise lines.

Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale Florida, is one of these popular cruise ports. The Fort Lauderdale cruise port is home to a new Disney Cruise Line terminal. This port can be the perfect starting point for your cruise family vacation.

This post contains affiliate links and we may receive a commission from one of these links. We paid full price for our cruise but have been on media cruises in the past at no or lower cost. All opinions are my own.

Why Cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida?

If you are flying in for your family cruise, you may wonder which cruise port to leave from. In general, I recommend looking at the specific cruise first, then the cruise port second (especially for the Florida cruise ports, since there are several options).

However, Fort Lauderdale is an excellent option to consider. It’s easy to fly to, with flight options through either Fort Lauderdale Airport or the Miami International Airport.

While the Fort Lauderdale airport is generally easier, you may find more options through Miami. Both are short drives from the airport, unlike Port Canaveral which is a longer distance from the Orlando Airport.

Regardless of which airport you fly through, I’d recommend staying overnight at least the night before. Flight delays are always a risk, and if you fly in a day earlier, you’ll have some extra time.

As someone who lives in the Northeast, I also enjoy flying in a day or two earlier so that I can enjoy the Florida weather before my cruise vacation from Fort Lauderdale.

While the Fort Lauderdale cruise port (Port Everglades) is not new, Disney Cruise Line has just opened a brand-new cruise terminal. I had the opportunity to sail out of this terminal for my recent cruise on the Disney Dream . In addition to Port Canaveral, this is one of the more popular Disney Cruise departure ports.

Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Port

Arriving at the fort lauderdale disney cruise line port.

Whether you are coming from the airport or hotel, or driving, it’s easy to access the Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale port. You will need to show ID to get through port security, but you’ll be able to take a cab or ride share if you aren’t driving.

It’s a large port, so it’s important to know that the Disney Cruise Line terminal at Port Everglades is Terminal 4. There are likely to be quite a few ships in port.

Parking is available in a port parking garage, which opens up at 10:45 AM. If you have a lot of luggage, you can pull up to the port first to drop off luggage with porters, before being directed to the parking garage.

Arriving via ride share or being dropped off? They’ll be able to pull up along Terminal 4 to drop you off at the terminal.

Once you arrive, you can leave any luggage with the porters to be delivered to your stateroom later in the afternoon/early evening. You’ll need to carry anything you don’t check, and keep in mind that your stateroom may not be ready when you arrive on the ship.

Disney Cruise Line mails your luggage tags in advance to your home, so be sure to have them on your bag. If you happen to forget them, the porters can write you out a tag.

These porters are not employed by Disney and do accept tips. Make sure to have some cash available to tip. Make sure no essentials (especially your Passport and other documents, as well as medication) are in your day bag and not in this checked luggage.

Checking In For Your Cruise

Once you check your luggage in with a porter (if you choose to), you’ll be directed to go into the terminal. We saw overhead fans in this outdoor queue area, meaning some people may need to wait outside. But we walked right into the terminal.

We checked in with a terminal employee, although most of our actual check-in was completed online. There are separate lines for Castaway Club members and first-time cruisers. If you have a DisneyBand+ (which is completely optional), they can assist in activating it.

Once we completed our check-in, we went through security. This is very similar to an airline security process, but you won’t need to remove your shoes or any liquids in your bag. You also don’t have to follow the TSA liquids rule .

When you check in online, you’ll receive a confirmation with a QR code. You’ll need this QR code until you get your Key to the World key on your stateroom door, so be sure to keep it handy.

There’s plenty of seating, restrooms, and vending machines in this main terminal. Our boarding group had already been called at this point, so we walked right up to enter the ship. Before walking through the Mickey Ear entrance, you can choose to take a group photo.

Like other cruise ports, staterooms are generally not ready until about 1:30-2 pm. Most people go right to lunch in Cabanas and then go to their rooms. Luggage is delivered throughout the afternoon into early evening.

Disembarking Through the Disney Cruise Line Port Everglades Flight

If you choose to have Disney Cruise Line handle your bags, you’ll need to put them out the night before. Make sure you haven’t packed anything you’ll need in the morning (like your toothbrush or clothing), in this bag.

You can choose to do a walk-off if you don’t check your bags. In that case, you’ll be one of the first off the ship.

Otherwise, you’ll need to remember the character that was on the bag tag of your checked bags. When that bag tag is called, you can disembark the ship. You’ll find your luggage on or near a table labeled with that character.

Once you have all of your luggage, you can go through customs with your passport. Then, you’ll be directed out of the terminal based on where you are going and what type of transportation you are taking there. Our disembarkation (we did a walk-off) was very quick and easy for this latest cruise.

Staying Overnight Before Your Flight

We highly recommend staying at a nearby hotel the night before your cruise, if you need to fly in. With flight delays and lost luggage always a risk, it’s a good idea to have some extra time.

This map (with affiliate links) will show some nearby lodging options. There are some wonderful hotels right on the beach, or you can choose a more reasonably priced chain with fewer amenities. While some hotels offer paid shuttle service to the airport, a ride share may be less expensive.

Whether you're short on vacation days or you only have a long weekend to spare, three-night cruises offer a fun and affordable way to get a change of scenery. If you're looking for short cruises that pack a lot of good times into a weekend vacation, you should know that many cruise lines offer these trips, including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Read on to find out which short cruises we recommend, where they depart from, and everything you can see and do over the span of three incredible nights.

What to do before or after your cruise from fort lauderdale’s port everglades.

By Janet K. Keeler

Nearly 4 million cruisers come to Port Everglades cruise port in Fort Lauderdale every year to see the world. There’s not a continent untouched by at least one of the 40 ships that homeport in Port Everglades.

Cruise itineraries range from three-day Bahamas jaunts to 100-plus-night cruises around the world. In between there is a multitude of Caribbean, European and South American itineraries plus ships that traverse the Panama Canal bound for Seattle, sojourns to Africa and expeditions to the Antarctic.

Besides the broad range of cruise itineraries out of Port Everglades, South Florida is busting with things to do for travelers who arrive a few days early or want to stay a bit after the cruise ends. Extending a cruise vacation is never a bad idea.

And what a place to do that. The 22 miles of Broward County beaches are beautiful, there are plenty of accommodations and the weather is cooperative year-round. There’s a two-mile paved promenade adjacent to the sand in Hollywood Beach for walkers, bicyclists and runners. Deerfield Beach is the spot to build sand castles and the iconic fishing pier that juts 975 feet into the Atlantic lures visitors for fishing, views and people watching. Pompano Beach is a prime snorkeling and scuba site.

If you’ve arrived at Port Everglades by car, then you can easily get to all the things-to-do places on your list. If not, car rentals (at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just four miles from Port Everglades), taxis and rideshare transportation are available.

The Fort Lauderdale Water Tax i makes 10 stops through the city along the Intracoastal Waterway. Riders can hop-on-and-off to explore, get food and drink or stay on board for the ride. It’s a convenient way to see some of the glittering hotels and high-rises. Port Everglades has eight terminals and Nos. 2 and 4 are walkable to the Convention Center Water Taxi stop (No. 4) but a taxi ride is probably in order for most cruisers. The cruise port is that big. The free Fort Lauderdale Community Shuttle is another way to get around though there is no stop at the cruise port.

Here are five more things to do before or after a cruise from Port Everglades.

an aerial view of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Make a Bet on a Good Time

Sometimes you’ve just got to roll the dice and you can actually do that at Harrah’s Pompano Beach and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. Harrah’s, which is north of Everglades cruise port, has 1,200 slot machines and other digital games plus more than 40 tables for poker. Try your luck with other hopefuls playing three-card stud and Texas hold ’em, among other poker games. Need a break from the tables? Check out the fine dining at Farraddays Steakhouse or grab something more casual at Myron’s Delicatessen . Myron’s specializes in New York deli fare such as mile-high pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. Seminole Hard Rock has slots and poker tables but also offers live blackjack, craps, roulette and “ mini-baccarat .” Because it’s part of the global Hard Rock family, the Hollywood facility has a robust entertainment schedule . There is live music in bars, lounges, nightclubs plus a concert venue, which books top-name acts such as Heart, Diana Ross, Blake Shelton and Ed Sheeran. There are plenty of bars and restaurants offering sports bar fare to fine dining. Consider booking a couple of nights at the Hard Rock before or after your cruise, especially if a favorite act is on the schedule.

Enjoy Nature in the Big City

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a natural oasis amid the high-rises and busy streets of Fort Lauderdale and for that reason it gets the nickname “Central Park.” It’s nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway and a paddle along the mangrove canal will kick off your relaxation journey. Or maybe be a respite after a busy cruise itinerary. Kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards can be rented from the park concessionaire , The Grove is adjacent to the A1A highway, the state’s main East Coast thoroughfare—you can often see the waves as you cruise AIA. A paddle through the canal is a good way to spy some of Florida’s showy birds and even 4-foot iguanas! The Grove also offers guided full-moon and sunset tours. Other activities include biking, fishing, camping and hiking. Want a less active visit? Pack a lunch and have a picnic, the perfect activity if you just have a few hours to spare.

1355098841_sawgrass-mills-05.jpg.1028.640.imagerendition

Retail Therapy on the Boulevard

Las Olas Boulevard is the main east-east drag through Fort Lauderdale. It’s a 2.3-mile stretch that runs from high-rise condos and businesses through a pedestrian-friendly shopping-dining-entertainment district to the white sand of Fort Lauderdale Beach. If you’ve got an afternoon available and shopping is on your mind, walk the shopping district and stop in one of the many boutiques, including Lily Pulitzer, and eat at one of the many restaurants serving breakfast through dinner, many of them with pet-friendly sidewalk dining. In addition, there are art galleries and lots of clubs with tropical drinks and live entertainment. If outlet malls are your thing, the sprawling Sawgrass Mills on the edge of the actual Everglades boasts 350 stores and 16 full-service restaurants. Arrived for your cruise still in search of trendy cruise wear? You’ll find it at Sawgrass. Do some in your party want to shop and some don’t? The non-shoppers can check out the latest movies at the Regal Sawgrass IMAX 3D theater.

Wilton Manors, Rainbow Bridge

Have an Inclusive Experience

Wilton Manors is one of the most progressive cities in Florida and has welcomed and celebrated the LGBTQ community for decades. It’s often called Florida’s gay capital and there are many reasons to make the 10-mile trek north of Port Everglades. There are Pride events throughout the year and the Stonewall National Museum & Archives and the World AIDS Museum are here. Wilton Manors likes to have a good time and there are plenty of shops, restaurants and clubs along Wilton Drive to do just that. It’s just a mile long but it will feel like so much more as you browse art galleries and clothing shops. There’s tongue-in-cheek fun with some of the business names including Thai Me Up and What the Pho . Order a watermelon basil martini before tucking into the very popular Sunday brunch at Rosie’s Bar and Grill . Humming nightlife, dancing included, along Wilton Drive, too.

Browse a Bookstore for the Ages

Just three miles south of Port Everglades is a place booklovers get giddy over. William Chrisant & Sons’ Old Florida Book Shop in Dania Beach has more than 50,000 antiquarian books on shelves from floor to vaulted ceiling. The shop sells old and rare maps, plus vintage magazines. It’s one of those book shops that makes it to bibliophiles’ must-see lists. Southern Living magazine put it on its list of best Florida indie bookstores . It’s in a typical Florida shopping strip mall but feels more like something you’d find on a hidden lane in London or maybe in the pages of a Harry Potter tome. After you work up an appetite scouring the stacks and other ephemera, like vintage photographs from the Miami Beach Rod & Reel Club ($600), grab a bite to eat at the kosher Ariel’s Delicious Pizza or sample authentic Cuban fare at Juana La Cubana Cafe , both in the same strip mall.

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024

T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Date: Departs March 24, 2024

Departure port: Miami

Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 21 nights

Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024

Departure port: Southampton, England

Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 16 nights

The MSC Virtuosa from MSC Cruises is repositioning from Europe to the Caribbean in November 2024, which gives travelers the chance to enjoy a lengthy transatlantic crossing with plenty of unique ports. This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

The MSC Virtuosa is a larger cruise vessel that boasts an impressive grand promenade with a LED dome ceiling, dedicated clubs for children and teens, an onboard spa, a lavish casino and the luxurious MSC Yacht Club section of the ship. This vessel holds a maximum of 6,334 passengers at once.

360 Kiosk Email : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.

Princess Cruises welcomes its biggest ship ever with help from a star

Gene Sloan

It took a star to welcome the sun.

The Sun Princess , that is.

Princess Cruises on Tuesday officially hailed the arrival of its newest megavessel — at 177,882 tons, its biggest ever —with the help of "Ted Lasso" star Hannah Waddingham.

The Emmy Award-winning actress and singer presided over a star-studded 19-minute christening ceremony in the ship's Princess Arena theater that included a traditional bottle breaking, with a twist.

Serving as the ship's godmother, Waddingham placed a triangular "sun ray" representing Sun Princess into a sun sculpture on stage to trigger the smashing of a huge bottle of Veuve Cliquot Champagne — a nebuchadnezzar that holds the equivalent of 20 traditional bottles — against the ship's hull.

"As much as theater ripples through my bloodstream, I have the strongest history of maritime in my family," a clearly proud Waddingham said moments before triggering the bottle smash.

She noted that her still-living, 107-year-old grandfather served on convoy ships crossing the Atlantic during World War II. She also grew up boating.

"It's in my blood and in my bones," she added.

Built at the giant Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, Sun Princess is the most notable new Princess ship to debut in more than a decade. Capable of holding up to 5,189 passengers (a record for a Princess ship), it's not only significantly bigger than previous Princess ships but packed with more onboard venues.

The naming celebration came two months after Sun Princess began sailing for the first time with paying passengers, a debut that was unexpectedly delayed by 20 days due to construction issues.

"Sun Princess is incredible. It's the largest, most luxurious love boat ever," John Padgett, Princess president, said at the event, harking back to the line's long-standing tie to the hit television show "The Love Boat" that ran in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Three stars from the show — Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell and Jill Whelan, who played bartender Isaac Washington, ship's doctor Adam Bricker and captain's daughter Vicki Stubing, respectively — were in attendance at the event.

The "Love Boat" stars were seated just a couple rows behind Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison and CEO Josh Weinstein.

Carnival Corporation is the parent company of Princess Cruises.

Makoto Okuwa, a James Beard Foundation honoree who designed a sushi eatery for Sun Princess, and Dario Cecchini, a celebrity Italian butcher who created a meat-focused restaurant for the ship, were also in attendance. So was the Brazilian artist Romero Britto, who sat to the right of Arison. Britto's colorful, upbeat art is the theme for the ship's high-end restaurant, Love by Britto.

Other celebrities at the event included model and television personality Tyra Banks, wildlife show host Jeff Corwin, fashion designer and television host Randy Fenoli and mixologist Rob Floyd. British singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield performed her smash hit "Pocketful of Sunshine" among other hit songs on the top deck of the ship after the ceremony.

The biggest Princess ship ever

Under development for more than six years, Sun Princess is the first of the new Sphere Class of Princess vessels. The ships have been designed to be significantly bigger than previous Princess vessels and offer several new-for-the-line features.

First look: Inside Sun Princess, the giant new ship from Princess Cruises

Sun Princess is the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — part of an effort to draw more upscale customers to the brand.

Additionally, Sun Princess offers an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" on the ship's extra-wide 10th deck that features exclusive access to a private deck area. The top deck of the ship also received some unusual-for-Princess sizzle. Passengers will find a glass-dome-topped pool area that transforms into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Other differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. But don't worry, buffet lovers: There still is a buffetlike venue on the ship. Called The Eatery, it's eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off its outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, the Princess Arena, also has a new look. Its new-for-Princess, in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess features a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles.

Princess also has revamped its main dining room program with the debut of Sun Princess. It now offers three distinct options for cruisers in its main dining rooms, ranging from a traditional fixed seating experience to a casual, come-when-you-want option that includes quick-served meals and even breakfast for dinner .

The arrival of Sun Princess marks the first time Princess has launched a new class of ship in nearly 11 years. With its debut, Princess now has 16 vessels in its fleet that collectively have room for about 50,000 passengers. That makes Princess the world's fifth-biggest cruise line, behind Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

Sun Princess is initially sailing in Europe through the fall. It'll then reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $577 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

A second ship in the new Sphere Class series, to be called Star Princess, is on order from the Fincantieri shipyard for delivery in 2025. Its first voyage is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2025, and will take place in the Mediterranean.
