A Tourist Visa is granted to a foreigner whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing, causal visit to meet friends or relatives. Tourist visa is non-extendable and non-convertible. Change of purpose is not allowed.

• Previously issued 10 year Tourist paper visa are currently not valid for travel to India. As and when the 10 year Tourist paper visas previously issued get reinstated the same will be notified. 
• Currently Regular Tourist visas are also not being issued from the Consulate. As and when the service is started the same will be notified. However, e-tourist visa can be applied for at  https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/  

Processing Time : 3-5 business days after receipt of application in the Consulate.

If you already have a  valid Canadian visitor visa , you don’t need to apply for an eTA. You can travel with your visa until it expires.

If you transit through Canada to or from the United States

You  may  be able to  transit through Canada without a visa or eTA if you meet certain eligibility requirements.

You need an official proof of status as a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., such as one of the following:

• valid permanent resident card (Form I-551)
• foreign passport with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (also known as an Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication [ADIT] stamp)
• foreign passport with a temporary I-551 printed notation (“Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year”) on a machine-readable immigrant visa upon endorsement with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection admission stamp
• expired permanent resident card (Form I-551) with Form I-797 (Notice of Action) for pending Form I-751 (Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence) or Form I-829 (Petition by Investor to Remove Conditions on Permanent Resident Status)
• expired permanent resident card (Form I-551) with Form I-797 (Notice of Action) for pending Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card [Green Card])
• valid re-entry permit (Form I-327)
• Form I-94 with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (ADIT stamp) and a passport-style photo

Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. How long does it take for Canada to process visa applications from India?

Canada has maintained processing of visa applications from India, including temporary resident visas for students and workers; and permanent resident and family-class sponsorship applications.

Below are the average wait times for Indian applicants across five different permit/visa processing streams as of September 26, 2023. Note that these processing times are subject to change and can vary depending on the specific conditions of one’s application. Please check the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to get the latest info.

Work permits and visas

Work permits allow foreign individuals to work and reside in Canada for the term of their work permit.

Note the difference between a visa and a permit for immigration purposes—a permit allows someone to legally reside and work and/or study in Canada. A visa grants foreign citizens entry into Canada through its borders. Usually permits take up the bulk of processing times. After a permit is issued to a foreign national, they must subsequently submit their passport at an IRCC office for visa stamping if they wish to travel outside of Canada and subsequently return.

Work permit processing can vary based on whether one is applying within Canada, or from outside the country. The processing times are:

Study permits and visas

Study permits allow foreign nationals to study and reside in Canada. Some study permits also allow provisions for students to work either full-time or part-time during their studies.

The same distinction between work permits and visas applies to study permits—once an applicant has their study permit approved, they must subsequently give their passport for visa stamping if they wish to travel outside of Canada and subsequently return.

Study permit processing varies based on whether one applies for their study permit inside or outside of Canada. In addition, processing times can vary based on whether the application is for an initial study permit, or an extension. Finally study permit processing times can be expedited when applying through the Student Direct Stream —a specialised study permit stream that Indian students are eligible for.

Below are current processing times for study permits:

Visitor visas

Indian citizens who wish to visit Canada will need a visitor visa . These visas do not have associated permits, as visitor visas do not allow holders to work or study in Canada (though visitors are free to pursue study and/or work permits if they wish). In addition, visitors can apply for an extension of their visitor visa, known as a visitor record . This is not a visa but rather a document that allows visitors to stay in Canada longer.

Visitor visa processing is impacted by whether one applies inside or outside of Canada.

Below are current processing times for visitor visas:

Economic class immigration

Economic class immigration spans a number of immigration programs. These include the Express Entry managed programs—the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC)—as well as the immigration pathways within the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which can vary from province to province.

This line of business also includes the Atlantic Immigration Program , the Self-Employed persons Program (federal), Start-up Visa , Quebec immigration streams (including the Quebec Business Class , and the Quebec Regular Skilled Worker Program ), and pathways for caregivers .

Candidates who are approved for these programs are granted Canadian permanent residence (PR) upon arrival.

Below are current processing times for economic immigration applications:

Family sponsorship immigration

Canadian permanent residents and citizens of Indian origin who wish to sponsor Indian spouses, dependent children, or other family members to come to Canada can do so. The main pathways to accomplish this are Spousal sponsorships , Dependent child sponsorships or for other family members, the Super-Visa and Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

Processing times for spousal sponsorships are dependent on whether the spouse being sponsored is currently in Canada or not; and if the couple will be residing in or outside of Quebec (as due to legal provisions both the federal government and the provincial government must process immigration applications to Quebec ).

Who can apply?

• Entry Visa is granted to Persons of Indian Origin and to those who are dependents family members of Employment Visa
• Govt. of India has started issuing 5-10 years duration for Tourist and Entry visas for Canadians starting from the 4th of Dec 2017.
• Biometrics is compulsory for all Visa applicants. Applicants between the age of 12-70 must be present personally at the BLS Center to apply for the same. Biometrics are exempted for the applicant applying visa for the duration of 1 year or less. (By Post/Mail only)

The visa can be extended by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer in India. Validity is at the discretion of the FRRO officer

Note: 5-10 years visas will not be accepted by Post/Mail.

The validity of the visa/ number of entry to India decision is at the sole discretion of the CGI/HCI. BLS International Services has no role in it and only accepts complete application as per the checklist.

Eyeglasses, contact lenses, jewellery (earring, necklace), heavy make-up should be removed before photo capturing. It is also advisable for applicants having sore eyes, eye sty or any redness in the eyes to come for e-passport renewal when their eye condition improves

Note : The timeline mentioned is tentative and for standard scenario. Due to special circumstances like Covid-19, high volume of applications, etc., it may take longer time in processing the applications. The processing of the application is also depending upon the scrutiny and related verification of the case. Thus there is no fixed timeline for processing of the applications and rendering service.

Venezuelan passport holders

You may need to complete extra steps when you fill out your application .

If the printed expiry date on your Venezuelan passport has passed

If the printed expiry date has passed and you’re applying for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit or to extend your stay as a temporary resident in Canada, follow these steps:

• Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
• Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.

Faster visitor visa processing for spousal applicants

If you’re being sponsored for permanent residence (PR) by your spouse or partner, you could benefit from faster processing for a visitor visa.

You may be eligible if you

• submitted an application to be sponsored for permanent residence
• received an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) that confirms the application is in progress

Applications that need more information, for example custody documents for a child, will take longer to process.

When your sponsor receives the AOR for your permanent residence application, you can apply for a visitor visa. If you’re eligible, your visitor visa application will automatically receive faster processing. You don’t need to request it.

You must still meet all of the requirements to be eligible for a visitor visa .

To qualify, you must show that:

If you need a visitor visa to travel to Canada, you must apply online for one. Only online applications will be accepted and processed. However, you can apply on paper if:

• you can’t apply online because of a disability or
• you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen

General Information on Obtaining Indian e-Visa

Canadian citizens and other eligible nationals can avail e-Visa. e-Visa has following five sub-categories i.e.,

e-Tourist visa,

e-Business visa,

e-Medical visa,

e-Medical Attendant visa and

e-Conference visa.

Foreigners applying for e-Conference visa will be permitted to club with e-Tourist visa only. Only TWO e-Medical Attendant visas will be granted against ONE e-Medical visa

Applicants of the eligible countries/territories may apply online minimum 4 days in advance of the date of arrival with a window of 120 days. Example: If you are applying on 1st Sept then applicant can select arrival date from 5th Sept to 2nd Jan.

The validity of e-Tourist Visa and e-Business Visa will be one year from the date of grant of ETA. Multiple entries will be permitted on e-Tourist Visa and e-Business visa . In case of e-Conference visa , validity will be 30 days from the date of arrival in India.Only single entry is permitted on e-Conference visa. In case of e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant visas, validity will be 60 days from the date of first arrival in India. Triple entry will be permitted on e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant visas

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

Why some student visa hopefuls are attempting to go to Canada on visitor visas

Canada capped the number of international students it would take in earlier this year and announced certain conditions for immigrants. should student visa hopefuls consider visitor visas not necessarily. here is why..

Many Indian students are planning to travel to Canada on visitor or tourist visas instead of study visas and eventually apply for study visas upon entry.

It likely stems from the difficulties some have faced of late in obtaining a study visa for undergraduate courses after Canada capped the number of international students earlier this year. What route are some students planning to take, and is it advisable? We explain.

Why students are finding it difficult to obtain Canadian student visas

Several educational consultants in Punjab have observed a rise in students applying for visitor visas this year, following Canada’s imposition of several requirements in January 2024.

As The Indian Express earlier reported , the intake cap on international student permit applications will be enforced for two years amid high levels of immigration that have reportedly put a strain on local resources. For 2024, the cap is expected to result in approximately 3,60,000 approved study permits, a decrease of 35 per cent from 2023.

Students hoping to get student visas now require mandatory attestation letters issued by the provinces/territories where their college or university is located. A fixed number of attestation letters are allocated to various provinces by the government. This requirement, however, does not apply to master’s courses.

Some students have reported delays in approval for their student visas, due to attestation letters not being issued in time.

Further, the cap may lead to further competition. Students with higher band scores in English proficiency tests, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the PTE (Pearson Test of English), are more likely to get accepted.

“Some agents in remote areas are misleading students. Claiming that getting student visas is quite difficult for Canada and student visas are not being issued now, they are advising them to enter the country on visitor visas and then convert them to study visas,” said a consultant based in Jalandhar . Similar misinformation on the difficulties of securing student visas is being spread by consultants in larger cities across Punjab.

Is this legal?

Several consultants say that individuals entering Canada on visitor visas can later apply for study permits. While the processing time for visitor visas from India is around three weeks, study permit applications take 12 to 13 weeks to get approved. Thus, it would allow a student to get to Canada more quickly.

“My brother has completed his studies in Canada and his Permanent Residency case is under processing. He has asked me to join him on a visitor visa, intending to help me convert it to a study permit upon arrival,” said Rajdeep Singh, a student from Jalandhar.

Gurpreet Singh, a Punjab-based consultant running an IELTS centre and study abroad consultancy, said several students are approaching them to apply for visitor visas instead of study visas, citing faster processing times and better success rates in getting them approved.

Is going to Canada on a visitor visa advisable for student visa hopefuls?

Some consultants argue that since the process is legal and allows students to enter Canada sooner they could consider this route.

However, others advise against it, saying that students should apply for study visas directly as the success rate is still high, and the process is becoming more streamlined since all provinces have gradually started issuing attestation letters in line with the new rules. Therefore, the processing time for student visas may soon decrease.

Sumit Jain, a consultant at Jalandhar’s Jain Overseas, an IELTS centre and study abroad consultancy, said that students opting for visitor visas to Canada and then applying for study permits there must undergo a similar application process as they do in India. It involves obtaining proof of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI). According to the Canadian government’s immigration website, a DLI is an educational institute that a provincial or territorial government has approved to host international students.

Students must also then demonstrate financial support and enrol in a DLI, all while potentially extending the visitor visa as they await the outcome of the study permit application. Usually, most visitor visas allow for a stay of up to six months.

Jain added that applying for a visitor visa is a complex and costly route and the capping of numbers will also apply to those international students who are applying from within Canada. Applying for a student visa is advisable, he said.
