You will work on real-life tourism industry cases, linked to basic subjects such as: online and offline marketing, e-business, financial management and consumer behaviour. Several city and company visits will be part of these course modules and you will go on a study trip. In addition to these courses, you will attend language classes. You will take English and one other modern language course. The options are French, German, Spanish, Italian and Chinese.

The second year is also constructed of 12 course modules: 6 general modules and 6 course modules which relate specifically to the specialization area (track) you have chose to explore.

The general modules are: Online Consumer Behaviour 2- Change Management - Smart Organization Experience Design 2- Online Marketing & Communication 2- Finance & Feasibility

You can choose one of the four specializations:

“Travel Industry”

The international travel industry is continually ‘on the move’ because of online developments, changing consumer behaviour and increasing competition. Therefore, it is important to spot trends and developments in the travel industry and keep innovating. You will be taught how you can develop innovative services and travel products by being creative and using new media and technology to deliver an optimal travel experience to modern consumers.

“Recreation & Hospitality”

Present-day guests are looking for original and authentic experiences, appreciate comfort, and take top service for granted. You will learn how to accomplish all this, acting as an enterprising and innovative manager.

“Tourism Destinations”

Tourism is an important source of income for more and more destinations, both in Greece and around the world.  The international growth of tourism requires new investments, smart plans and creative entrepreneurs and organizations that design the tourism of the future. This track focuses on conceiving, developing and managing tourism activities at destinations at home and abroad.

“Attractions & Theme Parks Management”

The Attraction & Theme Park industry is rapidly growing and changing. Museums and science centers no longer focus exclusively on education, but are adding entertainment and experiential elements to their offerings in the form of themed exhibitions, interaction and attractions. At the same time, existing large attraction parks are evolving into holiday resorts featuring various hotels, entertainment centers and water parks. In this track, you will learn how you can add value to visitor experiences by developing new products and services. This track will be offered in conjunction with Hotel Management and Leisure Management.

Three-year track

The fast track may also be open to Greek students, depending on their previous education.

If you choose to register for the three-year track, you have to determine two choices in advance: as you enroll on the regular programme in year 2, you have to choose one of the four above specialization tracks and choose one foreign language

All international applications will be decided on a case by case basis, to ensure the standard of the diploma will be appropriate for the fast track.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

As an international applicant, you will also be required to demonstrate sufficient results of one of these tests:

CAE (Cambridge Advanced Certificate), or CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

IELTS test (minimum overall band score of 6.0, and minimum subscore of 6.0 for speaking)

Greek high school diploma (Apolytirio Genikou Lykeio), with a general grade of at least 10. Financial calculation is an essential part of the study programme. A grade of at least 15 in one or more of the following subjects is preferable for successfully following this course: mathematics, or economics.

Breda has a growing number of students, which is why accommodation in Breda can be scarce. Unfortunately, Breda University of Applied Sciences has no campus or student rooms of its own and, therefore, it will be your own responsibility to find accommodation in Breda. Rental prices for a student room in Breda vary from €300 to €500 per calendar month. However, you will most commonly find rooms to rent for around € 400. Make sure you book a room in time (preferably in the early spring), so you have the best chances to book the room that suits your wishes. Unfurnished rooms can be cheaper to rent than furnished ones and since most rooms in the Breda are unfurnished, you may need to furnish your room yourself. This doesn’t have to be expensive as there are many DIY stores, second hand stores and second hand websites and Facebook pages.

If you want to find a good place to live in time, Breda University of Applied Sciences encourages you to subscribe to Klik voor Kamers (Click for rooms). This is a joint initiative of the three housing corporations in Breda: Laurentius, Singelveste Alleewonen and WonenBreburg.

Growth in international tourism is so enormous, that tourism itself has evolved into an engine of the world’s economy. Tourism as a worldwide phenomenon is closely connected and intertwined with major global changes in culture, politics, technology, economics and the environment. You can start to work, for instance, as an advisor, policy officer, manager, or marketeer.

After graduation, students can find interesting positions at: National and regional tourism boards, Existing and new business ventures, Management and business development advisory firms, Government organizations and departments, National and regional parks, Research firms (including marketing research firms), International policy-making bodies, Airlines and Airports.

With a bachelors diploma from Breda University of Applied Sciences, you can continue with a Master’s programme, for example, the “Master in Tourism Destination Management”. If you want to do a Master abroad, you can usually start straight away. If you wish to do a Master’s degree at a research university in the Netherlands, you may be required to follow a pre-Master’s programme.

Study at 4 locations in the world

Have you completed a professional or academic bachelor's degree programme and do you want to take a radically new approach to tourist destinations? Then Master Tourism Destination Management is for you!

Tourism means opportunities for businesses and residents of a tourist destination, but there are also threats. It is important to match supply and demand. Can you make a difference? A difference between profit and loss, between chaos and structure, a difference that works out well for both tourists and locals? In the professional Master Tourism Destination Management, you work on this in four locations.

Tourism remains a dynamic and fast-growing sector, creating an interdisciplinary field of study and research. The tourism industry offers economic benefits, growth, and opportunities for people and businesses in destination areas. At the same time, matching demand - from tourists in the areas of origin - and supply - at the tourism destinations - continues to be a challenge for many organizations.

Knowledge of the tourism destination

The tourism industry and tourism destinations frequently experience rapid changes in markets and business models, often in response to social and economic processes occurring in the wider world. Effective management of this type of change and building resilient businesses and destinations requires knowledge and expertise, which is closely interwoven with the destination areas themselves. The Master in Tourism Destination Management is designed to contribute to this, focusing on practice, perspectives, and tourism management policies at destinations.

Study at four locations in the world

This programme offers you the opportunity to study at four different locations in the world so that you will obtain wide-ranging intercultural experience and develop in-depth knowledge of tourism destinations. Each destination finds itself in a different stage of development. You will carry out research at three different destinations. In previous years destinations were: Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, France and Malta.

Course details

The program is structured into three phases. The first phase in Breda, with a clear emphasis on theory, is considered to be the preparation for the second and third phases. The second phase takes place at three different types of tourism destinations. It has a focus on the tourism practice under different circumstances and you will work in international student research teams. In the final phase, you will write your final thesis in which practice and theory should be brought together, striving towards new insights, theories, or generalizations.

The program covers 12 months and it comprises three phases:

Phase 1 - Theory in Breda

During the first phase, you will gain theoretical knowledge and develop your professional skills. This enables you to effectively analyze the current situation and available potential for development strategies at various tourism destinations. Destination theories, models, developments, and practical cases will be studied. Courses are given by lecturers, along with an interesting team of visiting lecturers from international organizations and universities. You will interact on a daily basis with this specialized team of academics and tourism professionals.

The first phase covers the following subjects:

  • Contemporary Marketing, Context, and Trends (6 ECTS)
  • Destination Stakeholders & Policy (6 ECTS)
  • Context-Related Research (4 ECTS)
  • Cross Cultural Studies (3 ECTS)
  • Research Process & Methods (3 ECTS)
  • Destination Development, Finance, and Organisation (6 ECTS)
  • Team Performance and Creative Leadership (2 ECTS)

Phase 2 - Field research

In the second phase you will carry out assignments at three different locations. These assignments are created by lecturers in cooperation with stakeholders involved in developments of tourist destinations in the region. We try to select destinations:

  • with which our staff are very familiar;
  • that have many contacts with businesses, government institutions and universities of applied sciences;
  • that are familiar with developments and dynamics;
  • have a lot of variety in culture.

Phase 3 - Final thesis

By writing a final thesis during the last phase of the program, you will apply your research skills and demonstrate a true understanding of tourism destination management from a professional and academic point of view. You are required to demonstrate critical analysis and evaluation. The final thesis uses concepts, insights, and practical abilities to develop a better understanding of the subject under investigation. A final thesis is an individual assignment, carefully supervised by one of our lecturers.

Writing a final thesis is a major commitment in terms of time and energy. The subject, as a consequence, often personally motivates and interests the student and (new) ideas of students can be openly discussed with our staff. In principle the thesis subject should be a topic or an issue in an international tourism context. Students have to ensure, however, that the research idea is both appropriate and feasible. The final thesis should be written in English, unless another language is really more appropriate. Some examples of recent theses:

  • Belgium, one country, three visions: comparative study of the websites of the three regional tourism promotion agencies
  • Strengthening bridges - How a Dutch tour operator can improve its collaboration with their Indonesian partners
  • 360-degree videos as a promotion tool to encourage tourists to choose nature conservation travels
  • Ski touring on groomed slopes - Integration strategies considering influences on critical success factors of Austrian ski destinations and their management
  • Potentials of wine tourism in Rhodes
  • Key motivational influencers to choose a destination for a tropical island wedding
  • Experiences and motives behind tourists' choice of destinations with paranormal activity - a case study of Hoia Baciu Forest, Romania

Cooperation with an external commissioner

You can opt for writing your thesis in close cooperation with an external commissioner. This enables you to closely cooperate with an international tourism organization and therefore adds an additional and professional dimension to the research project. However, many students write independent research theses and travel to a tourism destination to study their subject in-depth.

Research location

Conducting research and writing a final thesis in this third phase can be done anywhere in the world. The final (oral) exam takes place in the Netherlands.

Study load and coaching

The Master in Tourism Destination Management is a one-year, full-time program. The total study load is 60 ECTS credits. To give you an idea: 1 ECTS credit = approximately 28 hours of study a week.

We offer you a small-scale study environment. The number of students involved in this master's program differs every year between 30 and 45 up to 50 students. Whenever possible the class will be split up into workshops, consultancy sessions, and other group work. For questions on the content of the program, lecturers can be easily reached. In addition, the program coordinator is available to help with day-to-day issues. If you wish to discuss personal problems that may be affecting your life as a student, you can turn to the student counselor.

Graduates of the Master Tourism Destination Management qualify for:

International policy and advisory positions

  • international advisory functions related to feasibility analysis of investment projects, business strategy, and market penetration or development
  • public strategic functions in the field of development and management of (tourism) destination areas
  • advisory and management functions in the field of visitor management in urban areas, theme parks, and nature reserves
  • strategic advisory functions

  • research functions with branch organizations such as WTO, PATA, Tourism
  • external advisory functions in the area of international corporate, financial and organizational development for small and medium-sized companies
  • Three months of field research at three different destinations in the world

Course Content

Course characteristics.

Since the International Tourism Management programme prepares you for an international career, you will have plenty opportunities to gain international experience. You will participate in field trips and in a field research project, you will do a six-month placement abroad and you will have the possibility to participate in an exchange programme at one of the partner universities of NHTV all over the world.

The regular track of this programme takes four years, but fast tracks are possible for Dutch students with a vwo diploma or relevant mbo diploma (level 4). This may also be available to foreign students, depending on their previous education.

There is also a Dutch taught International Tourism Management programme called Management toerisme.

Course planning

Year 1, combined introduction year

If you follow the regular track you will start with a combined introduction year into tourism & leisure. Focus is on people, hospitality and experience, but it also concerns business insight, creativity and organisational talent. The first year is organised by means of four projects:

  • Project Management
  • Imagineering

After the first joint year you make a final choice for tourism or leisure. Alongside these elements, language, presentation and communication skills will complete the first year.

After this first year, you can specialise in:

  • International Tourism Management and Consultancy (ITMC)
  • International Tourism and Travel Industry (ITTI)

Depending on which study programme you choose (ITMC or ITTI) you will find different specific courses and focuses. But in all cases you will deepen your knowledge of international tourism by means of course material that matches international standards and is a unique combination of (business) planning, tourism and travel developments, cross cultural studies and marketing, focused on your chosen specialisation. To test your knowledge and understanding of the subject, individual exams, group assignments and/or group presentations are used.

Field research projects

You will visit a tourism destination for about three weeks to gain in-depth knowledge of the real-life operations and dynamics within a tourism destination. The ITTI students for example might travel to Brazil to conduct market research linked to courses that are important to their curriculum, such as Tour Operating and Aviation Management. While the ITMC students on the other hand will travel to a destination in South East Asia, like Koh Samui in Thailand or Bali in Indonesia, to conduct a Destination Analysis. This is also linked to relevant courses from their curriculum, such as Analysing Tourism Markets, Tourism Network Dynamics and Cross-Cultural Studies. The field research projects by themselves, and the courses connected to them will offer you a real understanding of the tourism industry and the tourism destination

Specialisations

The International Tourism Management programme offers two specialisations:

International Tourism Management and Consultancy

This specialisation focuses on the international tourism destination. Special attention is given to applied research, connections between theory and (real-life) practice, and the context for rapid change in the international tourism setting. The analysis of destination dynamics prepares you for a global career in the public or private sector. The emphasis is on the dynamics of tourism development at destinations, emerging economies, local community involvement and business feasibility.

International Tourism and Travel Industry

As a manager in the Tourism and Travel Industry you are in charge of fine tuning holiday tours and business trips to the wishes and needs of your clients. This specialisation pays close attention to planning, buying, organising, publicising and distributing trips and tours on demand (tourists) and supply (tourism destinations) and extensively deals with developments and operations in the airline and airport industry. Special attention is also given to upcoming travel markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. You will be trained for commercial positions which require knowledge of aviation, leisure and business tourism, hospitality, economics, marketing and management.

Fast tracks

The International Tourism Management programme offers you the opportunity to finish your study in three years if you already have a pre-university education (vwo or Hochschulereifezeugnis) or a vocational education (mtro tourism level 4). If you choose to register for the three-year track, you have to determine two choices in advance:

  • choose one of the two specialisations, information can be found below
  • information for Dutch students
  • information for foreign students

Three-year track International Tourism Management and Consultancy

To facilitate your integration in the second year of the regular programme, you follow two courses in Marketing and Tourism during the first six weeks of the year. These courses are taught parallel to the regular programme. You attend a semester focusing on Tourism and Development and a semester which revolves around The Destination. Both semesters are constructed of various courses, languages and training sessions which can be found in the curriculum of the programme. In the second semester you will participate in a fieldwork project abroad, where you will not only be introduced to research and consultancy work in tourist destination areas, but you will also actually set to work on this subject yourself, under expert supervision.

The third semester titled Business Planning contains courses such as Financial Accounting, Feasibility Study and Project Management. During this semester you prepare for your full-time work placement abroad which is scheduled in the fourth semester (January to June).

In the final year - in semester 5, you can shape your study plan to meet your individual needs by choosing from the extensive courses and seminars. For your specialisation, you choose four courses and three seminars; participation in international tourism projects is compulsory in this semester. In semester 6 you will conclude your study mme by writing an internationally oriented thesis.

Three-year track International Tourism and Travel Industry

The subject matter of this (first) ITTI year focuses on the introduction of tour operating and aviation management. Besides this, courses in marketing, operational management, research, concept and product development will be offered in a tourism context. The teaching method consists of projects and courses. In addition, you will be given a number of skill workshops and language courses.

In the first half of the second year you will be involved in a program that focuses on deepening your knowledge of tour operating, aviation, marketing and management. Cross cultural issues will be part of the program as well, because it will help you to perform in international environments. In the second half you will do a work placement. Students from abroad may choose for a placement in the Netherlands. Dutch students need to go abroad.

In this graduation year you will write your thesis in the second semester. Before that you will have the opportunity to specialise (minor/individual specialisation) in a particular work field. The first semester program emphasizes also on globalisation issues related to the travel and tourism industry.
