Remove recent Safari web search and browsing history from iOS

Safari for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch allows users to clear all caches, website data, and history together in one fell swoop, but sometimes you may want to be more discerning than that.

The modern versions of Safari for iPhone and iPad allow users to delete Safari website data, searches, cookies, cache, and Safari activity from the past hour, today only, or today and yesterday, as well as for all time . This is a great solution if you want to wipe Safari browser data over a recent period of time, rather than everything for all time, though you can continue to do that from iOS Safari too if you wish.

This is great for when you forget to use Private Browsing mode in Safari for iOS, since it allows you to remove website history, searches, and browsing data after the fact, at whatever time interval is appropriate.

How to Remove Recent Safari Search, History, & Website Data on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Keep in mind this removes not only Safari data from the local device, but also from iCloud connected Safari devices as well. Because of how iCloud works, if you didn’t do it this way, the Safari caches, search history, and browser data would remain on other iOS devices.

Open Safari if you haven’t already done so and tap on the bookmark icon, it looks like an open book
Choose the bookmark tab, again this looks like an open book, then tap on “History” near the top of the screen

In the corner of the History view, tap the “Clear” button, then choose one of the following options:

Delete recent Safari history browsing data and cache

The last hour – removes all history of web activity in Safari from the past hour
Today – removes any and all web history from Safari in the current day
Today and yesterday – same as before, plus removes website data from the prior day as well
All Time – this removes all Safari data from all time, like going through Settings in iOS to delete all website data

When finished, tap on “Done” in the corner of the History section of Safari to return to Safari as usual

The effect is immediate and the removal of all website data in Safari occurs on the local iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch as well as carrying over to other iCloud connected devices using the same Apple ID.

For those wondering, the reason data is removed from iCloud devices as well is because otherwise someone could simply pick up a related device using the same iCloud account and find the same browser data and history that was just deleted, which kind of defeats the purpose for multi-device users and situations.

Of course, if you don’t want to delete everything from a given time period, another option is to delete individual specific pages from Safari history in iOS if you only have a page or two that you want removed from your Safari activity on a device. And ultimately, if you’re finding yourself removing website data and history often, you may want to just get in the habit of using Private Browsing mode in Safari on iOS , which prevents any of it from being kept in the first place.

By the way, Mac users will find a similar recent history removal option in Safari for Mac OS X too , which offers the same time interval options for removing data from the Safari web browser.

Whenever I try this it always shows the clear button as grey🤔

My problem is about the fact that iPhone 6s has used up my storage but iCloud storage that I have been paying for sits there with a full belly of storage!

The clear history, website data and cookies suck and does not work on my iPhone. I’ve went to safari n deleted history from there n still show 2.3gb of history on storage. I’ve also went to setting and cleared it from the safari tab and it still shows 2.3gb of storage being used under history. What’s the point of having 2 ways to clear the data if it isn’t going to free up the space under storage. My sisters iPhone has no issues clearing history and it also clearing her storage for safari.

The problem with this is that starting with the release of iOS 9, this option not only removes History entries but blows away all of your cookies as well. This is particularly troublesome as many banking sites will, at not finding your cookie, require re-authentication via text message or other alternate authentication method.

In iOS 8 you could erase history but not delete cookies as well, but you couldn’t do it easily in Safari for OS X Yosemite.

In El Capitan, the ability to delete just history returned to Safari (hold down option and you’ll see History -> Clear History… change to History -> Clear History and Keep Website Data…) but in iOS 9 Apple removed it from Safari for iOS.

So if you aren’t near a Mac to erase just history (not cookies) from Safari in El Capitan, you have to manually erase each individual history entry in iOS 9 to not lose your cookies. (Sigh.)

Command line >>> You can delete Safari’s cache file. First, check its size using the disk usage (du) command:

du -h /Users/$HOME/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Note: Replace “$HOME” with the name of your home folder. You can use the user identity (id) command to find it:

Next, delete Safari’s cache file:

rm /Users/$HOME/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Safari will create a new Cache.db file automatically when you open a new webpage. Open a new webpage or restart Safari and recheck disk usage:

Warning: when you use the remove (rm) command files are essentially unrecoverable. A more prudent approach is to use the move (mv) command:

mv /Users/$HOME/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db ~/.Trash/

This will move the file to your user’s ($HOME) trash. From there it is still recoverable until you empty the trash.

Yea I don’t think you’ll be accessing the command line in iOS but this is a good tip for Mac users in OS X.

On my iPad2 OS 9.1, only bookmarks, Reading List and Subscriptions appear, so no Clear button ever shows itself, the button below right only ever r ads Edit.

Not surprising that if you don’t follow the instructions you won’t get the intended result. It’s a FEATURE, to say it “doesn’t work” suggests that Apple is making up features that don’t exist? LOL, don’t think so. Apple pulls a lot of junk and iOS is cruddier than ever, but the feature exists it’s a feature in Safari.

When I go to settings and try to clear it, I go back to safari and it’s still there someone help me!!!! Just so you know this is update iOS 9.2 I’m talking about. I searched up something I don’t want ANYONE TO SEE AND I CANT CLEAR IT PLZ HELP MEEE!

Mine doesn’t look a thing like this. El Capitan disables my keyboard as I try to type this. El Capitan must be more f**ked up than even you realize.

How to Delete Frequently Visited Sites From Safari's Start Page in iOS

Your Frequently Visited sites appear immediately below your Favorite sites. If there's a site showing up in Frequently Visited that you'd like to delete, no problem. Simply touch and hold the site in question to reveal the start page's preview mode and contextual menu.

If you don't want any Frequently Visited sites to appear on Safari's start page at all, you can turn them off completely. Here's how.

Launch the Settings app on your iOS device.
Scroll down and tap Safari .
Under the General section, tap the switch next to Frequently Visited Sites to turn it off.

How to Delete Cookies and Stored Website Data in Safari

Websites and advertisers use cookies to identify you and follow you around the internet, and they might also save other website data to remember you by. In Safari, you can delete these cookies and other data. Let's head to Safari's privacy settings.

Stored content can include a history of your site visits or information you provided the site, such as your name and email address. You can delete all of the website data at once or for individual sites.

Delete Cookies and Saved Data on the Mac

1. Select Preferences from the Safari menu or hold down the Command key and the comma key at the same time (Command+,).

2. Go to the Privacy tab.

3. Click the Remove All Website Data button to remove all stored website data, or skip to step 5 to remove data on a site-by-site basis.

4. Click Remove Now to confirm. Note, as Safari warns you, this could log you out of sites and perhaps also change how they function. For example, instead of getting tailored ads on the site, you'll be served generic ones.

5. To remove stored data by site, click the Details button.

6. Select the sites with stored data you want to remov e. Hold down the Command key to select multiple sites.

7. Click Remove.

8. Click Done.

Alternatively, you can click the Remove All button to delete all of the sites' cookies and stored data. Safari will ask you to confirm your choice:

Clear your history, cookies, and browsing data from Safari on your iPad or iPhone .

1. Open the Settings app and tap Safari.

2. Tap Clear History and Website Data. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, the menu is slightly different: Tap "Clear History" and "Clear Cookies and Data".

3. Tap Clear to confirm.

4. Tap Advanced back in the Safari Settings window to clear other stored website data.

5. Tap Website Data.

6. Tap Remove All Website Data . Alternatively, you can click the Edit link at the top right and then delete individual sites' data by tapping the minus sign next to the site names.

Doing this will not only help protect your privacy. It can also clear out precious space on your device.

How To Manage Web Site Usernames & Passwords In Safari (iOS and macOS)

This article explains how you can view, add, and edit your web site usernames and passwords in iOS and macOS Safari. Safari has a built-in password manager.

Safari will remember website and app passwords so you do not have to. Safari can also fill out passwords for different websites and apps when you’re asked to log in.

macOS Safari Passwords

1 . Open Safari

2 . Click Safari and Preferences

3 . Click the passwords tab

4 . You will be asked to enter your password, enter our password and hit enter. You can view all of your saved passwords.

You will see a list of websites and passwords. The list is sorted alphabetically by website name. If you see exclamation points next to passwords, that means that those passwords are reused on more than one site or easy to guess. This means you may want to change them.

If you want to turn off AutoFill, simply uncheck the ‘AutoFill usernames and passwords’ box.

You can use the search field to search and find websites, usernames and passwords, if you have a lot of saved passwords.

You can add a new password and username by clicking the add button. Then fill the required fields (website, username, and password) and click the Add Password button.

To reveal a password, simply click a website from the list, and you will see the password. You can also click the Details button to see more info.

To remove a password, first select it by clicking and then click the Remove button. If you remove a password, and if you are using iCloud Keychain, selected password will be removed from iCloud Keychain on all your devices.

To edit a password or website, select the website first by clicking it and then click the Details button. Edit or change the fields (password, username etc) and tap Done.

You can also use AirDop to send or receive passwords. This will let you share your passwords with AirDrop. To do that on Mac, select a website or password and click Details and then click the Share button. If you want to use this feature, however, you must use iCloud Keychain. Also, please ensure that the person that you are sharing your password with has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

iOS Safari passwords

On your iPhone or iPad:

1 . Tap Settings

2 . Tap Passwords & Accounts

3 . Tap Website & App Passwords (you will have to enter your passcode or use Face ID or Touch ID)

Here you can view, edit and add passwords. Again the list is listed alphabetically. You can also use the Search field.

Again if you see the exclamation point icons, that means that those same passwords are used across different websites or they are not strong enough.

To view a password, simply tap the password or website to view it.

To remove a password, tap the Edit button (top-right), then select the password you want to remove and then tap Delete. Alternatively, you can swipe left and tap the Delete button.

To add a new password, tap the plus (+) sign and enter the details (website, username, and password) and then tap Done.

If you want to turn off AutoFill, go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts and turn off AutoFill Passwords.

To edit a password, select the password, and then tap Edit. When you are done, tap Done.

To AirDrop a password, tap a password and then tap and hold on the password to reveal the AirDrop option and then tap AirDrop and select the device to send.

Again, if you want to share your passwords with AirDrop, iCloud Keychain must be set up and enabled. Also, ensure that the person you are AirDropping the password has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.

How to Enable Safari to Save Passwords for Websites

Step #1. Open Settings app on your iOS device.

Step #2. Now, scroll down and tap on Passwords & Accounts.

Step #3. Ensure that the switch next to AutoFill Passwords is turned ON , if it’s not already.

Note: in iOS 11, you need to go to Settings → Safari → AutoFill → Turn on the switch next to Names and Passwords.

From now onwards, when you visit any site and log in, Safari will ask you to save the passwords. If you often visit that site, save the password and you are done!

How to Manage Saved Passwords on iPhone and iPad

iOS 12 lets you manage all of your saved app and website passwords with ease. For instance, you can delete them and even change passwords right from the settings app.

Step #1. Launch the Settings app on your iOS device → Passwords & Accounts.

Step #2. Now, tap on Website & App Passwords.

Delete the Saved Website and Its Associated Passwords

Tap on the Edit button at the top right and then select the website/s you want to delete. Then, hit Delete and confirm.

Tap on the respective website. Then, tap on Change Password on Website. Next, you can enter a wrong password and then tap on “Forgotten password.” Next up, follow the usual steps to change it.

iOS 17.5: New features, release date, and more details

Apple has officially started beta testing iOS 17.5 with developers and public beta users. The update brings a handful of new features and changes, and is expected to be released sometime next month. Head below for everything we know right now.

Based on previous years of iOS updates, I’d expect that iOS 17.5 will be released to everyone sometime in mid-May. Here’s a rundown of previous iOS x.5 update release dates:

iOS 13.5 : May 20

So far, two iOS 17.5 betas have been released as of April 17.

What’s new in iOS 17.5?

While iOS 17.5 isn’t quite as big of an update as other iOS 17 updates, it still includes its fair share of new features and updates.

Within the European Union, the latest iOS 17.5 update introduces the capability to install applications directly from a developer’s website. Apple unveiled this new “Web Distribution” feature last month, explaining that it allows developers to distribute their iOS apps straight from their own websites.

To utilize this functionality, developers must opt into the updated App Store business terms, which requires paying a Core Technology Fee of €0.50 for every first annual installation exceeding one million in the preceding 12 months.

Any application disseminated through the web will still need to adhere to Apple’s notarization guidelines. Apps can only be installed from a website domain that the developer has registered in App Store Connect. Apple will also provide a range of APIs for developers to integrate with system functionality.

Apple has confirmed that iOS 17.5 beta includes support for Web Distribution. However, there are currently no developers offering their apps via this new Web Distribution feature. We don’t anticipate this changing until the public release of iOS 17.5 in May.

In the Apple News app, Apple News+ subscribers in the United States and Canada will find a new “Quartiles” word game after updating to iOS 17.5. The game prompts players to select from a grid of tiles to form words.

Quartiles is the third game to come to Apple News+, following the addition of daily crossword and crossword mini games that were added last year.

iOS 17.5 also adds Game Center integration to all three of the Apple News+ games. With this feature, you can now see leaderboards for each of the three games for Daily Solve Time and Daily Score stats.

iOS 17.5 beta 1 also includes a few small design changes that are worth pointing out:

The Podcasts widget has been updated to have a new dynamic color that changes based on the artwork of the podcast you’re currently playing.

In the Apple Books app, Apple has redesigned the “Reading Goal” icon in top navigation bar.

In the Settings app, there is a new glyph for the “Passkeys Access for Web Browsers” menu under “Privacy & Security.”

Based on code discovered by 9to5Mac , iOS 17.5 seems to incorporate a new system centered around anti-stalking capabilities for accessories like AirTags. This development follows Apple’s announcement last year of a partnership with Google to collaborate on a new “industry specification to combat unwanted tracking.”

Strings added to the Find My app reveal that iOS will be able to identify tracking accessories, even those that are not Apple or Find My certified, and assist users in disabling them.
