How to turn on predictive text on your iPhone, so it can finish your words or sentences while typing

  • You can turn on predictive text on your iPhone in the Keyboard section of the Settings app, or from the keyboard itself.
  • When you turn on predictive text on your iPhone , it will make typing suggestions above the keyboard as you enter text.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

With predictive text, your iPhone can make guesses about the words you are typing and suggest how to complete sentences.

In addition, it can suggest the next word you might want to type as well, based on your past typing and websites you've visited in Safari. Using predictive text, it's possible to write short messages with minimal typing  — or even no typing at all.

When predictive text is on, you'll see three suggested words above the keyboard. As you type, if you see the word you intended, just tap to enter it into your message or document.

Predictive text is on by default, but easy to disable if you find it annoying or distracting. And you can turn it back on with just a couple of taps.

Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Iphone 11 (from $699.99 at best buy), how turn on predictive text on an iphone.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Keyboard."

3. On the Keyboards page, turn "Predictive" on or off by swiping the button. It's on when the button is swiped to the right and off when it's to the left.

You can also turn predictive text on or off from the keyboard itself.

When the keyboard is on screen, tap and hold the keyboard shortcut in the lower left corner (it's either an emoji or a globe icon). Then tap "Keyboard Settings…" and turn "Predictive" on or off.

Predictive text in Safari appearing above the keyboard with "Predictive" toggled "off" for "Keyboards" settings. "Safari Suggestions" settings are "off," and all Siri settings toggled "off" including "Search & Siri Suggestions" for Safari. Steps to Reproduce: Open Safari, navigate to a web page with considerable text content ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States ). Click the address bar. Predictive text, likely "Annuit coeptis" and "United States" will appear in this example. For other sites, it may be necessary to click "cancel" and then the address bar a couple times to generate predictive text above the keyboard. Expected Results: No predictive processing/overhead should take place, and no predictive options should be provided above the keyboard when the setting is otherwise appropriately toggled "off." Actual Results: Predictive processing occurs ignoring appropriately toggled setting and text appears above the keyboard. Appears to be limited strictly to Safari.

Yes. Its really annoying and completely random if it pops up or not.

I thought I was the only one with the issue due to a lack of initial response. I have the phone completely locked down. Predictive setting is toggled OFF in keyboard setting. Siri is OFF. I have everything OFF purposefully, yet, predictive text populates in Safari as shown above in Helmsley's post. This has me concerned that these privacy minded settings may not be respected within the iOS framework and should not be trusted. If anyone at apple is listening, OFF means OFF. This should include WiFi and Bluetooth settings in Control Center. OFF means OFF. OFF meaning DISCONNECT, or MAYBE OFF is *NOT* a feature! I am awaiting a 11.0.1 update to see if this is fixed.

Anyone else with this issue? I have also noticed that some of the predictive suggested text is NOT found within the individual web pages within Safari, which means that predictive processing is taking place (l ikely off the device and on Apple's servers ). So much for respecting Privacy.

For me it seems to pop up when there is a "me" specific answer. So if someone texts me "where do you want to go for dinner" no suggestions pop up. But if someone texts me "what is your address" my address will pop us a suggested response.

C DM said: While I see the glitch on some pages, it seems like it's a stretch to imply something about privacy or something happening remotely just based on that. Click to expand...
Nope1239 said: I guess this depends on where the predictive processing and from where the suggested text is coming. I do not believe it is processed on the phone but instead on Apple's servers, specifically because the suggested text is not found anywhere else on the visited pages, was not previously typed into the keyboard (not in the phone's generative dictionary), and it is only tangentially related to what was keyed in the first place. If data from the keyboard is being sent to Apple for predictive processing/suggestions, this would be a privacy concern for those that do not want to send this data to Apple and have disabled/toggled off those settings. Apple's privacy policies and safeguarding of information aren't really in question. They do a good job, and better than most companies. The data is leaking and iOS 11.0.1 is not respecting the settings. That the data leaks to Apple makes it no less a privacy concern to businesses, government, etc. Click to expand...

QuickType in iOS 10 used "Siri Intelligence" https://www.apple.com/privacy/approach-to-privacy/ View attachment 723444 I understand the leak goes to Apple, and the exposure is minimal and likely protected, but there is a trend with settings not being respected or operating as a user would expect (control center wifi/bluetooth, for example). Does this predictive bug betray that the data is otherwise being siphoned up to Apple but just not displayed on screen for those with the setting toggled, or is the failure in respecting the setting? For some, that answer matters. Click to expand...
C DM said: All of that is good and fine, it doesn't show that that's what's happening here though. According to Dave Berry, “The internet is the most important single development in the history of human communication since the invention of call waiting.” That is why we now have about 1.2 billion websites on the internet, even though only around 200 million sites are active at the time of writing.

Now, being able to control the website or web page you are searching for on the internet is essential. As an Apple product owner, your default browser is often Safari. The app comes preinstalled for iPhones, iPods, Apple Watches, and so on. But it seems that users are experiencing some discomforts while using the popular web browser.

One of the irregularities commonly reported by users of the web browser is called Safari suggestion. The safari suggestion feature displays recent web pages under the search bar. Like the first one, another anomaly is the word suggestion made based on the webpage you are viewing.

These random words are often shown above the keyboard, and they are usually chosen at random. Similar to the word suggestion is the webpage suggestion. While Apple may consider this very helpful for giving its users a better experience, many Apple device owners consider it very disturbing.

This post shows how to prevent getting suggested search items above your keyboard when trying to type in the address bar.

How to Search for Text in Safari With iPhone Find on Page

iphone safari predictive search

  • Ithaca College

What to Know

  • On a web page, tap Share (the box with the arrow coming out of it). Then tap Find on Page and enter your search term.
  • Older iOS versions: Tap Share , swipe and tap Find on Page , and then tap Find on Page again.

This article explains how to use the Find on Page function in Safari on the iPhone to search for the text you're looking for on a mobile web page. We include instructions for iOS 14 through iOS 4 .

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 14 and 13

If you have an iPhone or other iOS device with iOS 14 or 13, follow these steps to use Safari Find on Page:

Begin by opening Safari and browsing to a website.

Tap the action box at the bottom center of the screen (the box with the arrow coming out of it).

Swipe up on the pop-up sheet.

Tap Find on Page .

In the search bar, type the text you want to find.

  • If the text you entered is on the page, the first use of it is highlighted.
  • Use the arrow keys above the keyboard to move forward and backward through every instance of your search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to search for a new word or phrase.

Tap Done when you're finished.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 9 - iOS 12

For an iPhone or other iOS device running iOS 9 through iOS 12, follow these steps:

Open Safari and browse to a website.

Swipe through the second row of icons. Tap  Find on Page .

Type the text you want to find in the search bar.

If the text you searched for is found, its first use is highlighted.

Use the arrow keys next to the search box to move through every use of the search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to enter a new word or phrase.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 7 and 8

The following steps work are the only way to use Safari's Find on Page feature on iOS 7 and 8 :

Begin by opening the Safari app and browsing to a website

Once the site is loaded in Safari, tap the address bar at the top of the Safari window.

In that address bar, type the text you want to search for on the page.

When you do that, a number of things happen:

  • In the address bar, URLs may be suggested based on your browsing history .
  • Beneath that, the Top Hits section offers additional suggestions.
  • The Suggested Website is delivered by Apple based on your Safari settings (you can tweak these in Settings > Safari > Search ).
  • After that are a set of suggested searches from Google (or your default search engine), followed by matching sites from your bookmarks and search history.

But where's Find on Page? In most cases, it's hidden off the bottom of the screen, either by the onscreen keyboard or by the list of suggested results and searches. Swipe all the way to the end of the screen and you'll see a section titled On This Page . The number next to the header indicates how many times the text you searched for appears on this page.

Tap Find to see all uses of your search word on the page.

The arrow keys move you through the uses of the word on the page. The X icon lets you clear the current search and perform a new one.

Tap Done when you're finished searching.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 4-6

In these earlier versions of the iOS, the process is a bit different:

Use Safari to browse to a website.

Tap the search bar in the top right-hand corner of the Safari window (if Google is your default search engine, the window will read Google  until you tap it).

Type in the text you're trying to find on the page.

In the list of search results, you'll first see suggested search terms from Google. In a grouping below that, you'll see On This Page . Tap that to find the text you want on the page.

You'll see the text you searched for highlighted on the page. Move between instances of the text you searched for with the Previous and Next buttons.

When visiting a web page in the Safari app, select the Share button (it looks like a square with an upward-facing arrow in it). Scroll through the Share menu and select Find on Page, then type in the word or phrase you want to search for and select Search .

Navigate to the web page in the Chrome app and select More ... > Find in Page . Enter your search word or phrase in the text field in the top-left, and Chrome will highlight matching words or phrases in yellow on the web page.

How to change the default search engine in safari on iphone or ipad.

Prefer DuckDuckGo or Bing to Google? Here's how to change your iPhone or iPad's default search engine.

Quick Links

Changing the default search engine in safari on iphone and ipad.

Safari uses Google as its default search engine out of the box, but it's not the only option. You can choose other search engines like Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo if you prefer them.

While most modern search engines can find the websites you're looking for, there are often ramifications to consider when making your selection. Google is the big player here, but you might want to select something else depending on your privacy stance. For example, DuckDuckGo pushes itself as a more private search engine, while Bing is integrated with Microsoft Rewards . Making the change in Safari on your iPhone or iPad is super simple, so long as you know where to look.

To get started, open the Settings app and tap "Safari."

Next, under the "Search" heading, tap "Search Engine."

Finally, select the search engine that you would like to use as your default when inside Safari. To select a search engine, tap it. You can choose either Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ecosia , or DuckDuckGo .

Sorry---those are the only options. Apple won't let you choose other search engines as your default. You can still navigate to those search engines in Safari and search them from their website, but that's it. The only way you'll get more options here is if Apple adds them in a future version of the iOS operating system.

There is, however, a caveat to consider here. This setting will only change the default search engine that is used when searching from within Safari. If you use Siri or Spotlight to search, they'll still use Google. It's not ideal, but Google pays a considerable amount of money to Apple every year to make this the situation we have to live with, unfortunately.

Safari predictive search has stopped working in ios8

Hi everyone. When using ios7 on my iPhone 5S (and previous versions on other handsets), Safari offered 'predictive' search through Google - i.e. possible search terms would begin to populate as I typed in the search box. Same principle as Google Instant. Since upgrading to ios8 (yes I am fully up-to-date) this function has seemingly vanished - now I have to type my search term in full, press search, and be taken to the Google results. Anyone got any tips / insight?

What troubleshooting have you tried? I just checked on my 5S and it is working for me. Go into Settings>Safari and see if the switches under Search are turned on. I have everything on in that section. It could be that during the update something got turned off. If they are still on then continue with the next steps.

First step in troubleshooting is powering the phone off and back on. You might also want to try and force close Safari. Double-tap on the home button and then after locating Safar swipe upwards on the thumbnail of the program to close it. Check and see if it works. If not, the next step is a reset. This is performed by holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. This should be the last step you need to take.

This has happened on my phone too. It's because I have private browsing active in Safari. When it's turned off everything works as before. Don't know why Apple made this change (didn't happen in any previous iOS)
