99+ Free Ireland Self Drive Tours (All Done For You)

By Author Keith O'Hara

Posted on Last updated: August 21, 2023

99+ Free Ireland Self Drive Tours (All Done For You)

We spent 8 months and €16,000 creating the world’s largest collection of free Ireland self drive tours.

Why? Well, planning an Ireland itinerary can be stressful – especially if you don’t know the lay of the land.

So, we’ve done  all the hard work for you ! Each of our self driving tours of Ireland:

  • Can be filtered by length, how fast you like to travel + more
  • Have been meticulously planned
  • Have hour-by-hour itineraries
  • Follow logical and scenic routes

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows about our Ireland self drive tours

driving tours of ireland

WAIT – please take 10 seconds to read the points below before you scroll. It’ll help when it comes to browsing our Ireland self drive tours:

1. They cover every possible angle

We’ve tried to cover every possible want or need with our itineraries. Below, you’ll be able to pick a free driving tour of Ireland based on:

  • Trip length : From 2 to 28 days
  • Start point : All major ferry terminals and airports in Ireland
  • How fast you like to travel : Fast or slow
  • Your fitness level:  High fitness or medium-to-low fitness

2. Our free self drive tours vs what other companies charge for

There are countless companies that charge for creating self guided tours of Ireland. You’ll generally pay them a hefty fee and they’ll customise a trip based on your likes and dislikes. Some also help you book hotels along with renting a car in Ireland .

We  don’t do any of this . We’ve simply created an extensive library of  detailed  road trip itineraries that we  definitely could charge for – but we don’t.

3. Jump to the tour length you want

Right – time to get stuck in! The easiest way to browse our self drive Ireland tours is to select how much time you have and work from there. Select a trip length below:

3 day driving tours of Ireland

3 day ireland self drive tours

3 days in Ireland is a  tiny  chunk of time so you need to be careful – it’s easy to end up trying to do way too much.

With this trip length, the danger is that you’ll end up with a packed schedule, and most of your time will be spent in the car.

The best Ireland self drive tours for 3 days is one that uses a central base and that sees you explore around you on day trips.

4 day Ireland self drive itineraries

4 day self drive tours of ireland

Those of you with 4 days in Ireland have the ability to explore a corner of Ireland in depth.

However, a word of caution – if you have the ability to choose  when to visit Ireland , try and visit during spring or summer.

These seasons have the advantage of long and mostly bright days, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore.

These shorter road trips can be tricky to map out at times so, when it comes to planning a trip to Ireland with only 4 days to work with, take your time.

The best Ireland self drive tours for 4 days is one that uses 1 – 2 ‘bases’ max and that explores a specific corner of Ireland, e.g. Kerry and West Cork.

5 day self driving tours of Ireland

ireland itinerary 5 days

5 days in Ireland is arguably the ideal length of time to explore a specific corner of Ireland, e.g. Galway and Mayo.

These 5 day trips our most popular self guided tours of Ireland. The reason for this is people  often  panic trying to squeeze in too much.

Chill! Each of our 5 day self guided tours of Ireland follow clear and logical routes.

6 day self guided Ireland tours

6 day Ireland itinerary

6 days in Ireland is a lovely amount of time that provides you with  endless  opportunities.

The best Ireland self drive tours for 6 days, in my opinion, is one that doesn’t stretch itself too thin.

If you’re starting in Belfast, for example, tackle the Causeway Coastal Route and then explore the many places to visit in Donegal .

7 day self guided tours of Ireland

7 day driving tours of ireland

If you’re spending 7 days in Ireland you’re in for a treat. A week gives you lots of options and a good whack of time to play with.

Longer Irish road trips like these give you loads of flexibility in terms of what you can do (even if it means the cost of a trip to Ireland increases).

If you’re visiting for 7 days, try and visit during summer or spring as the weather in Ireland tends to be better then and you’ll get more bang-for-your-buck.

8 day self drive tours of Ireland

8 day ireland self drive tours

Those with 8 days in Ireland have options, which is a luxury.

You’re not overly constrained by time, and 8 long days guarantee that you won’t need to hurry at any point (unless you want to, that is!).

With 8 days, you have the chance to explore multiple counties in depth. Or, if you like, you can go all-out and pack in as much as is physically possible.

The best driving tours of Ireland for 8 days, for me, would be starting in Dublin and then working down through Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford and then around through Cork and Kerry.

9 day Ireland self drive tours

9 days in Ireland

So, you’re spending 9 days in Ireland . Wonderful! However, you want to see all of the ‘main’ attractions during this time and you’re worried it’s too much.

It’s likely (and I’m basing this on getting emails from endless visitors) that you’re trying to pack in too much to the point that you’ll spend all your time moving accommodation and travelling.

9 days is a lovely chunk of time. But don’t get carried away. You can see and do  a lot  during this time frame. You just need to decide how much travelling about is ‘too much’.

10 day driving tours of Ireland

10 days in Ireland

Our 10 days in Ireland guides are the second most popular trip length and we first published them several years back.

Since then, they’ve been edited based on endless feedback and they have now been refined into tours that we’re proud of!

This is a mighty amount of time for an Irish road trip and it gives you a huge amount of flexibility.

For this trip length, you could easily pick 3-4 bases and fit a huge amount in while still taking it nice and handy. Or, you could go full whack and try and see as much of the island as possible!

11 day Ireland self drive itineraries

11 day self drive tours of ireland

Those spending 11 days in Ireland are the envy of many. This is a lovely chunk of time and it allows you to really explore until your heart’s content.

Thankfully, it was! Those of you planning a 2-week Ireland trip itinerary are on the cusp of a bucket list road trip that you’ll remember for a life time.

Although I’d argue that there’s no best Ireland itinerary for a trip this length, we’ve created 56 different options for you to choose from at the link below.

We spent a huge amount of time mapping out our 17-day Ireland self drive tours and, based on initial feedback, they’re going down very well already!

16 day self guided Irish road trip

A 19 day Irish road trip is hard to bate, however, and I know I’m like a broken record at this stage, it comes with pros and cons.

Planning self guided tours of Ireland of this length often lead people to think, ‘Ah, we’ve plenty of time – we can just head to Ireland and take it as it comes’ .

Don’t be that person as you’ll regret it when you get here. A trip of this length requires careful consideration and a  lot  of planning.

Luckily, we’ve 50+ 19-day driving tours of Ireland for you to browse at the link below.

20 days self driving tours of Ireland

20 day driving tours of ireland

Very few people, aside from those of us who live here, have the chance to spend 20 days in Ireland . This is bucket list territory.

This trip length provides you with two options:

  • Explore a specific region of Ireland in depth
  • Cram in as much as possible

For example, you could explore Kerry (the Ring of Kerry , Dingle Peninsula , etc.) and then progress through West Cork, Waterford, Wexford, and more.

The best self guided tours of Ireland for 20 days is one picks an adequate number of bases near key areas of interest and that avoids falling into the trap of trying to ‘fit everything in’.

21 days in Ireland self guided

21 day self drive tours of ireland

If you have the luxury of spending 21 days in Ireland , you’re in for a treat. An unforgettable experience awaits.

This was one of the hardest of our Ireland self drive tours to map out as there’s a danger of doing either too much or too little with a trip of this length.

It took us 8 days to research these 21-day itineraries and twice that to write and edit them. Enjoy!

FAQs about the best Ireland self drive tours

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from Ireland vacation ideas to detailed train itineraries.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

Can I tour Ireland on my own?

Yes. Although many people tackle driving tours of Ireland with friends or family, many people go it alone. Ireland is relatively small which means that you can see a lot, even on day trips.

How many days do you need to drive around Ireland?

Although we have free self drive Ireland tours ranging from 2 to 28 days, the minimum we’d recommend for driving around Ireland is 7 days. Just keep in mind that you’ll be very limited in what you can see and do.

How do I plan a driving tour of Ireland?

Start with how long you have to play with and work from there. Once you have your trip length, move to when you can visit and then proceed to what part of Ireland you can arrive into.

The Ultimate Self-Drive 10-Day Tour of Ireland

Itinerary — Your Ultimate 10-Day Self-drive Tour of Ireland

The-Ultimate-Tour-of-Ireland-Unique-Experiences-Off-the-Beaten-Path

Day 1: Dublin - Belfast

Total driving distance & time: 180 km – 2 hours 10 minutes, excluding stops

Turn on your Paddy the Pocket Pilot App and get on the road! Your ultimate self-drive tour of Ireland starts with an adventure to Newgrange, a magical Stone Age passage tomb decorated in megalithic art.

After exploring this incredible Neolithic structure, you will travel north to Belfast. Here, you can immerse yourself in the Titanic Experience at the interactive visitor centre of Titanic Belfast.

The wonderful and tragic stories told about the most famous ship in the world, and its doomed fate, is a moving experience.

Finish the day with a fantastic black cab tour of Belfast. Your cab will even pick you up from your hotel! (Optional)

The evening is yours to explore Belfast’s thriving pubs, restaurants, and shops. Get a great night’s sleep at your carefully handpicked accommodation.

Day 2: Giant’s Causeway - Derry

Total driving distance & time: 165 km – 2 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

The second day features one of this tour’s most-anticipated stops — Giant’s Causeway.

But the entire Causeway Coastal Route is just as breathtaking and a joy to drive.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is another highlight. Feel everything from fear to exhilaration as you cross the open ocean with air beneath your feet!

The Paddy App will also guide you to some secret locations off the beaten track.

Your next stop on day two is Derry. Northern Ireland’s second-largest city is steeped in rich and fascinating history.

Enjoy exploring the city at night because you will take a tour of the walled city on day three.

We recommend treating yourself to a gourmet and craft beer experience at the Walled City Brewery.

Day 3: Derry - The Hills of Donegal

Total driving distance & time: 110 km – 1 hour 50 minutes, excluding stops

Start the day with a walking tour of Derry led by a local guide. This experience will help you understand our past struggles and the long road to peaceful times in the North.

It’s time to leave Derry and head into the wild northwest. The Hills of Donegal are waiting!

Embark on a memorable drive that takes in the Glengesh Pass and the Assaranca Waterfall.

Paddy the Pocket Pilot will direct you to Grianan of Aileach, a 5th-century stone fort, where you can take in some truly stunning views.

Head to your accommodation in the picturesque village of Ardara, County Donegal, and treat yourself to a night of seafood and “craic” (fun) with the locals.

Day 4: Donegal - Connemara

Total driving distance & time: 260 km – 4 hours, excluding stops

Today’s road trip has the double joy of passing through Sligo – William Butler Yeats’ County – and making a short trip to Westport – Ireland’s favourite town!

Your time in Westport starts with a charming walking tour of the town followed by a fabulous lunch.

This will fuel you for a delightful journey through Connemara National Park and along part of the famous Famine Trail.

You will then visit Kylemore Abbey, a stunning 1,000-acre estate overlooking Kylemore Lake. Enjoy strolling around the abbey and soaking up the beauty of the Victorian Walled Garden.

Your journey continues to Clifden where you will find great bars, restaurants, and nightly music. Don’t be afraid of striking up a conversation with the locals over a tasty pint of the Black Stuff!

If you’ve ever had dreams of becoming a Prince(ss), now’s your chance! We have added the option of staying in Abbeyglen Castle!

Day 5: The Aran Islands

Total driving distance & time: 100 km – 1 hour 40 minutes, excluding stops

The morning starts with the short drive to Rossaveal Pier overlooking Galway Bay. Feel the excitement build as you board the ferry to the Aran Islands.

When you land on rugged Inishmore, the largest of the three Aran Islands, it’s time to explore! If you’d like, you can either cycle or make a special request for a jaunting cart (horse and carriage) against an additional charge.

Your route will take you toward Dún Aonghasa, an ancient, clifftop stone fort standing 100m over the ocean.

It’s then time to circle back toward the ferry and the mainland. On your way, you may pick up a word or two in “Gaelic” from the locals. And why not treat yourself to an authentic Aran Sweater?

When you arrive back at Rossaveal, your Galway adventure begins. Hug the coastline all the way into this bustling, bohemian city.

This much-celebrated place is home to entertaining street performers, an infectious atmosphere, and plenty of craic.

You won’t need your Paddy App to find entertainment this evening! It’s Friday night every night in Galway!

Day 6: Galway - Cliffs of Moher

Total driving distance & time: 90 km – 1 hour 45 minutes, excluding stops

Medieval history is at the very heart of Galway. Discover more about this side of the city on a tour led by our local guide.

Head down the narrow streets where you can duck in and out of brightly coloured shops. This is the perfect time to try on Galway Shawls and Claddagh Rings!

Pass under the famous Spanish Arch and enjoy the ambience of Claddagh, a delightful fishing village.

Sadly, you’ll have to leave Galway, but the day has more treats in store!

Travelling southwest, it’s time to visit the otherworldly Burren National Park and the jaw-dropping Cliffs of Moher.

On this adventure, you will visit Corcomroe Abbey, a 13th-century Cistercian Monastery as well as the 16th-century Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara.

At the Cliffs of Moher, you will walk over this awe-inspiring natural feature as the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash into it below.

The cliffs are one of the most iconic sights, and most spectacular natural features, in Ireland. We’re almost certain you’ll be lost for words.

Our itinerary will also send you off the beaten path, so you can enjoy some of the area’s hidden gems.

You’ll spend the evening in Doolin – the hometown of traditional Irish music.

Day 7: Doolin - Dingle

Total driving distance & time: 240 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

A trip to Ireland is not complete without seeing its incredible ancient structures. Today, you drive to the most famous Dolmen (AKA portal tombs) at Poulnabrone.

Dolmen are Neolithic monuments scattered throughout the country marking burial sites and passageways dating back to 3000BC.

After being awed by the Dolmen, it’s time to make the short trip to the farmers at Caherconnell who will treat you to a spectacular sheep-dog trial.

Prepare to be mesmerised by the farmer and his furry friend as they work in tandem to gather up their flock of sheep.

It’s then time to leave the west behind as you cross the border into County Kerry by ferry. Your next destination is the celebrated harbour town of Dingle.

The evening is yours to soak up the atmosphere in Dingle’s fantastic restaurants and famous quirky pubs.

Why not sit in Foxy John’s hardware store, order yourself a drink, and strike up a conversation with a friendly local?

Day 8: The Dingle Peninsula

Total driving distance & time: 50 km – 2 hours 30 minutes, at a leisurely pace!

Your morning starts on the water exploring caves and inlets on Dingle Bay by kayak. You may even meet County Kerry’s biggest celebrity – Fungie the Dolphin.

If kayaking isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You can take a moderate-paced hike up Mount Brandon instead. This walk offers the reward of 360-degree panoramic views of Dingle Bay and Castlegregory.

Or perhaps you just want to stroll around this colourful town teeming with charming cafes and original local craft shops? Take it at your own pace. It’s your holiday – Do it your way.

In the afternoon, jump in your car and take a delightful trip along one of Ireland’s most scenic roads – The Slea Head Drive.

You spend a second night in the buzzing town of Dingle – relax and enjoy.

Day 9: The Ring of Kerry - Kinsale

Total driving distance & time: 200 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

After saying a fond farewell to Dingle, you will journey towards the Ring of Kerry – one of Ireland’s most famous driving routes.

The first stop takes you to Killarney, considered by many as the Ring of Kerry’s starting point.

The Ring of Kerry is the very definition of the word “scenic”. You will discover famous sights and hidden gems along the way, including Moll’s Gap, Torc Waterfall, and Ross Castle.

We will arrange a guided tour of Ross Castle for you. Here, you will learn what life was really like behind those imposing stone walls.

The beautiful heritage town of Kenmare is the perfect place to stop for lunch and some shopping.

This is your last night on tour, so we’re sending you to the coastal town of Kinsale. This picturesque place is famed for its culinary culture, delivered by many award-winning restaurants.

Kinsale also has a great tradition of poetry, silver, gold, and glassware manufacturing. You can see this in the local shops and galleries which proudly have work by talented local artists.

Day 10: Cork - Kiss the Blarney Stone

Total driving distance & time: 320 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

Wake up refreshed and ready for a guided walking tour through Kinsale’s narrow streets. Your tour is led by one of our favourite guides – Barry!

Paddy the Pocket Pilot will then direct you towards Blarney because you MUST NOT leave Cork without visiting Blarney Castle and Gardens.

This is the home of the Blarney Stone. If you want the gift of the gab, you need to give it a big fat kiss!

Your final stop before driving back to Dublin is the Rock of Cashel. This historically significant site is over 1000 years old!

Marvel at its medieval round tower, cathedral, chapel, and castle. This is a truly fantastic way to end your trip.

It is now time to turn off your engine and dry your tears. Sit back and soak up everything you have experienced over the last 10 days.

If you have any time left before leaving the Emerald Isle, we will give you plenty of amazing tips and recommendations for things to do, eat, and entertain you in Dublin’s fair city.

My husband, three teenage grandchildren and i had a lovely vacation in Ireland this summer. Tina was very helpful with her suggestions and bookings for us, and Goirish provided a driver and van for us. Dennis was our driver, and I doubt you could find a sweeter and more accommodating man in all of Ireland.

My husband and I just returned from a 10 night trip. We flew into Dublin and did a self driving tour staying in many places. This trip was planned in 2019 prior to Covid. We were so excited to finally go and it did not disappoint. Every accommodation was fabulous and the scenery on the drives was amazing.

Essential information

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this self-drive tour in Ireland. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Ireland Travel Guide .

On a self-drive tour, Nordic Visitor supplies you with a quality rental car and a detailed personal itinerary. You act as your own tour guide and driver, and you get to pick the road trip music!

All your services will be pre-booked by your personal travel consultant at Nordic Visitor. This includes your rental car and accommodation in Ireland, along with planned activities, as specified in the itinerary.

As this is a self-guided tour, you’re welcome to stop whenever and wherever you wish along the way. Except for accommodation and booked activities, other highlights we’ve listed in the itinerary are suggestions based on Nordic Visitor favourites.

And rest assured that we’re with you every step of the way. Upon your arrival, you’ll receive personalised information, including an itinerary, hand-annotated map and our very own Ireland Travel Guide. Plus, you’ll have access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip should you need to contact us.

The minimum age to hire a car in Ireland is 21. Please note that you will need to have held a valid driver’s licence for at least 5 years to rent a car. A small fee will also apply to any drivers under 25.

If you are under 25, you may also be restricted in the size of vehicle you are able to rent. Please contact your personal Travel Consultant if you are unsure about which car to choose.

There is no maximum age, but our car rental partner has some requests for those 75 and older.

If you are between 75 and 79, you should be driving regularly. You will also need to provide 2 letters:

  • One from your doctor to state that you have been in good health for at least the last 12 months.
  • One from your insurance provider stating that you have not had an accident in 5 years. It should also confirm that you hold a car insurance policy and are currently driving.

If you are 80 or older, please contact us directly. We’ll look at alternatives for you.

This applies to all those who want to drive on your self-drive trip.

During your Ireland tour, you’ll stay in accommodation hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

In Ireland, you can choose from single or double rooms. Twin, triple and family rooms are not commonly available. Please also note that in Ireland room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double room often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

Due to the historic nature of the properties we usually select, most of the rooms are only accessible by stairs. Lifts are not common in Irish hotels. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are not able to walk up stairs.

Travelling with your kids? No problem! Just let your travel consultant know during the booking process. We’ll arrange any cots needed at your accommodation.

If you need multiple rooms, please note that we can't guarantee family rooms or interconnecting rooms at all accommodation. You may even have rooms on different floors.

If you'd like us to arrange for a car seat to be provided for your trip, please let us know ahead of time. This will incur a small extra cost.

The roads in Ireland are usually in good condition all year long and are renowned for their road trip worthiness.

Please be aware that in Ireland motorists drive on the left side of the road (and on the right side of the car). If you are not used to driving on the left, we highly recommend choosing a vehicle with automatic transmission for your self-drive tour.

If you want a manual transmission vehicle, keep in mind that you will need to shift gears with your left hand (floor pedals are the same).

Drivers will need to get used to the narrower roads of Ireland as well as the rural single-track roads. If you meet another driver on one of these single-track roads, one of you needs to tuck into a passing place, which might be behind you. In these areas, you should also be careful of animals on the road.

It’s also a good idea to plan how you will navigate around Ireland ahead of time. Your travel consultant will prepare a detailed hand-annotated map of your route to help you stay on track.

We also recommend using navigation apps on your phone, such as Google Maps. Make sure to download the route ahead of time, in case you don’t have signal in the more rural areas.

For inexperienced drivers who still want to explore and discover Ireland, we recommend one of our guided small group tours or privately guided tours . On these tours you’ll have a local, experienced driver at the wheel.

While Ireland isn’t known for its heat, summers on the Emerald Isle usually feature plenty of warm days. It’s also the driest time of year to visit.

Between May and September, you can expect temperatures of around 13°C–18°C (55°F–65°F). Due to humidity, this can feel a lot warmer, especially in cities like Dublin.

That said, the weather is also very changeable, so you’ll want to come prepared for anything. Rain is always a possibility, and when the sun sets you might need a warm jumper or jacket. We’ve prepared a useful packing guide to help you decide what to bring with you.

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit. If something unexpected occurs, you can call our 24/7 helpline to speak directly with a Nordic Visitor staff member.

Whatever time of year you’re in Ireland, you’re likely to see lots of different types of weather. As you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors it’s a good idea to come prepared for a combination of weather conditions.

Here is a recommended packing list for a summer trip:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Good walking shoes or boots (especially if you intend to hike and go on nature walks)
  • Light scarf or thin sweater
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a sunhat

For more information, check this packing list suggestion .

There are limited laundry facilities in Ireland’s countryside, but you will find some laundrettes in Dublin. Some hotels do offer dry cleaning for an additional cost.

On your Ireland road trip, you should budget for petrol costs of around €1.60–€2 per litre.

As for meals, your breakfast is included at all your accommodation in Ireland. For the rest of your food, your spending money will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

Budget between €15–€20 per person for each day’s lunch. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between €20–€25. Meanwhile at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay €40–€50 or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

If you’re arriving from the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia or the European Union, you won’t need a visa to visit Ireland.

Visiting from another country? You can find the complete list of countries whose nationals require a visa to enter Ireland on the website of Ireland’s Citizens Information Board .

If you are not an EU citizen, your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months after the date of your departure from Ireland. It’s a good idea to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be an Edinburgh-based travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

Yes, you can customise this tour online. During the booking process, you can easily add extra nights to your itinerary as well as optional day trips, excursions and upgrades.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

Nordic Visitor offers 10–20% deposits so you can reserve your trip as early as it’s convenient for you. The remaining balance is due 30 days before you travel.

Many tours are also open for the following year if you like to plan well ahead. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

At that time, they’ll confirm the availability of your tour. Then the booking process starts, which may take a few weeks. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip. You will also receive more information about what to expect during your trip.

You can get in touch with our Ireland travel experts ahead of your trip if you have any questions. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Ireland Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which credit cards are widely accepted in Ireland
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • The native languages of Ireland that you might hear alongside English
  • As well as tipping, local news sources and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything. Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents.

Upon your arrival in Ireland, you’ll receive a welcome bag with hard copies of your itinerary, attraction and tour vouchers, the Nordic Visitor Ireland Travel Guide and more.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Ireland?

After picking up your luggage, make your way to your accommodation in the Dublin city centre. We recommend one of the airport buses or to hop in a taxi directly to your hotel.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2–4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel if you have to wait. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will need to check out from your room, but will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before catching public transport or a taxi to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euros (EUR), the local currency in Ireland.

Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

These should tide you over until you’re in Ireland to take your own pictures.

Definitely recommend Nordic Visitor

This is our second self-driving tour and we would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor for a personalised adventure.

Julia, United States

Complete ireland, july 2023, well-organised tour.

The tour was very well-organised and structured to maximise the time on the road and the sites worth seeing along the way. The self-driving allowed me to spend time as I saw fit. Ireland is truly a beautiful country with friendly people.

David, United States

Complete ireland, may 2023, we had a wonderful time.

We had a wonderful time in Ireland. Jana was great to work with and the accommodation was very comfortable.

Elizabeth, United States

Very responsive.

My agent was very responsive to my emails and concerns from the beginning. She answered my questions, advised on a concern about the itinerary, etc.

Carol, United States

Exceeded our expectations.

The tour that was planned for us exceeded our expectations. The airport transfer from the airport was great.

Kevin, United States

Flawless experience.

Our travel consultant Rebecca was fabulous. She accommodated us in modifying our schedule at no charge after my wife's mother's death. She cheerfully changed our Dublin hotel to a more central location and always responded quickly to any questions or concerns. We are planning a Scotland trip in 2023 again using Nordic Visitor and hope to have Rebecca again. In 2021 we used Nordic Visitor for a 2-week driving Iceland trip that was also flawless.

Martin, United States

Complete ireland, october 2022, accommodation.

Sleep soundly, in the accommodation type of your choice, and wake up ready to enjoy another day of exploration.

More about ireland.

To the west of Great Britain, the enchanting emerald green landscapes, meandering rivers, and rugged cliffs create the serene beauty that is Ireland, known as the Emerald Isle. On the east coast, Irish folklore and legends come to life in cozy pubs where warm hospitality and traditional music combine to create an authentic Irish experience in the vibrant capital, Dublin. In the harbor city of Galway on the west coast, the Salthill promenade leads to popular beaches, and in town, you'll find eateries, nightclubs, and theaters as you wander through the cobblestone streets. Situated on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, Killarney is a popular gateway to The Ring of Kerry, a scenic southwest drive that makes its way around the Iveragh Peninsula through coastal landscapes and rural seaside villages. With a history steeped in Celtic traditions, and marked by sites such as abbeys, castles, and monuments, from the East to the West, Ireland invites visitors to immerse themselves in the warmth of its culture and explore its magical landscapes.
